Ryan: “I picked up a Sony A7s on the first day it was available and shot this simple slow-motion test. I have more serious work in the pipe, but thought I’d share this early test. It was filmed with AWB at 120fps with the FE f/4 24-70. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMboCH_kDIs”

Nice stuff from 3dkraft. Lovely images and the first one to show the cable protector! 🙂
Waouh impressive !
price price only price… If a7s costs 1000$ i buy eye closed
Then it will not come with a charger, an extra battery and the cable protector!! Well, it will not come with a 4K recorder in any case!
How many people are sick and tired about hearing everybody talk about how large the photosites (8micron pixels) are on the A7s?
Not me!! 😉
impressive video camera…
Although I see no advantage with higher iso in this test. Both videos look great at 3200.
Is you see no advantage at higher iso between the two cameras you need to have your eyes checked.
The video footage looks great at iso 3200 on both cameras already. So tell my why I would need to go any higher???? What’s the advantage? There is none for that situation/shot. Only stupid people bash on others on internet. Would you do it to a person in real life? No. Sit down and STFU
Only five posts….is the hype finally over?
Don’t be fooled! It will go up one gear when the 4K recorder becomes available for purchase- not just preorder. 🙂
video, video, video… where’s comparison of stills? Sony should have called A7S a camcorder with photo functions.
In the few stills I’ve taken with the camera, I’m slightly amazed that while this camera is amazing in low light, stills taken at the same low light as video look much more noisy. I’ve only done it a few times, but I’d safely say a full stop more noise from what I’ve seen.
I love this camera, but I do wish it had the LCD of the GH4 which after using both for a full month together, I’ve found to be much more crisp. Both EVFs are great. I also wish that one could control white balance while recording video…presently you cannot which really stinks. Outside that I LOVE this camera…which is why I have three. 🙂
PhoBlographer continues to be the worst reviewer of the bunch. Love how he goes on about not using the A7s in daytime because of the loss of detail. Out of his mind.
I’m enjoying the 7s over my 7 in the daytime. On screen, images are perceived to be consistently sharper by these eyes. Loss of detail only becomes an issue when you are printing huge and even then, I would argue 12mp is fine for the majority of use cases.
These video comparisons are becoming completely redundant, especially since, from a technical standpoint, everyone knows the A7S will already outperform the other A7 cameras due to it’s larger sensor photo sites.
Agreed – and they ignore all the things that make this one of the best stills cameras on the market, such as incredible low light focus speed and accuracy, silent mode, great DR and excellent perceptual sharpness at normal viewing sizes (more so than the A7 and A7r)
Counting the day A7s $1799 😀
Mine was already $1899 inc taxes and LA-EA4.
Such a deal would not come often at this early stage… $2500 is still a decent price for this camera considering that it has improved upon the other 2 in term of usability.
Well they are $2299 at many retailers here. Sony are about to have a $300 cashback on all the A7 series, this brings it down to $1999. The promotion for free Metabones or LA-EA4 adapter is ongoing until the end of September. I got a slightly better deal than this.
wow! that is good deal! the cash back is that instantly deduct from body price or its for purchase with purchase? not sure if here sony make similar offer..
You must be in Australia. Here in the States, the price for the A7s is $2500 (well, 2499). There is no adapter promotion and the cash back deal only works if I send in a qualified mirrorless or DSLR. My qualified A99 would cost much more on the used market than what they’re paying so it’s a no go.
That is cheap! Here it is $3233 (2399 Euros). Absolutely ridiculous price.
Don’t let your A99 hold you back. I just went on ebay and bought a $10 Canon Rebel Ti and sent it in for the 15% deal plus $45 credit on the trade-in camera!
Nice tips! Thank you. Off to eBay…
Love the fact that he’s filming planes in airplane mode
Hi guys, I have a question. Is the Sony 11-18mm OSS wide lens for E-mount worth getting for A7 in crop mode? What is the difference between using a 24mp in a6000 and crop mode on the a7 with this type of lens?
I’m sorry I meant the Sony 10-18mm f/4 OSS e-mount wide angle
I think it is as it covers the full frame image circle at some focal lengths so you can get the full 24mp on the a7 but in crop mode you end up with a 10mp image. At the moment it’s the only native UWA lens that covers FF. With an A6000 you get 24mp at all focal lengths and will benefit from the faster af on the A6000.
I have the lens and the A7. The lens works really well, except for vignetting at both extreme ends. But I can live with that. When I upgraded from Nex 7 to A7, it’s the one lens I kept and I likely will keep it for a while. It’s worth buying, especially if you can get it at discount. It’s a great lens. I never use it in crop mode. Just crop out the dark corners manually.
Sorry for triple photo post. Accident.
A7s -perfect surveillance camera, no more crime in night time.
If there can be a new version of the A7s with 16mp, a6000’s fast 179 AF point AF system, plus full weather sealing and capacitive touchscreen, it would be the best mirrorless camera for me. When that happens, here’s my money, sony can take it anytime.
I can’t see a 16MP FF appearing. It’s a poor fit with video requirements due to the level of resolution mis-match, and it offers only a modest linear increase (about 14%). However, that increase in resolution would meant that silent shutter may not be feasible (as there are one-third more pixels to read), so it might simply take too long for it to be acceptable (as it is, the A7S silent shutter is only suited to some subjects).
It’s simply too close to the A7S specification for there to be sufficient space in the market for it, and I think the disadvantages outweigh the relatively modest increase in resolution.
Admin , why to post a Gary Fong link, if that will put me back $12.95 in case I want to see the video.
Here is a little test I made today with the brandnew A7s and an old Konica-Hexagon Macro 55mmF3,5. All were taken with tripod, manual and 4 different focuspoints and then stacked in ps. This is set at free iso f3,5 and 1/125 and the isos are 500, 400, 640, 320 on the four different slides. I added some water to see how it looked.
You can judge yourself. Personally I think the camera is a stunner, opening up some new ways of taking photos. Will be an interesting fall…
That is lovely image. Can’t you do the same stacking with any other camera available (A7 and the like)? Why is the A7s “opening up some new ways of taking photos.”?
Well looks like A7s is usable at ISO 3200 while A7R certainly isn’t. Higher ISOs are for fun only, not for movie.
i think that WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE and i don’t see why way people say it is unusable after 3200 iso WHAT!!`??
No doubt it pulls head after 6400 by a wide margin. In fact, to my eyes it seems most impressive high up. But, under 6400 a few times I had to look twice. I thought the A7R was looking better. For me, this is critical as I rarely shoot above 1600 ISO- ever. I wonder what users opinion will be of the A7R when they update the focusing and overall speed. I still think it’s the best of the lot.
Same opinion as yours : at 3200 the A7R looks nicer.
But of course, at higher ISO, there is no match…
A7S looks sharper than the A7R at 3200 ISO. It’s better.
A7S looks sharper than the A7R at 3200 ISO.
