New A7rII tests
Alin Popescu sent me that image (posted on top) and the following text:
I just updated to last version of LR and I am now able to see my RAW files from the Sony A7R II. What came to my surprise was to see the interpretation of the RAW files by the LR engine. Until now, you could see for a fraction of a second the embedded jpeg in the RAW file and then, the LR engine interpreted the file in a more washed-out, uglier version. You had to use Camera Calibration profiles to get closer to the JPEG look.
With this last version it interprets almost perfectly the RAW file, less the DRO shadow boosting on the Jpeg file.Is it just my brained fooled or is there a real RAW engine shared by Sony to the Adobe team ?!
AustroWiki on SonyAlphaForum noticed that Legacy lenses appear to perform better on A7rII:
I have tried two legacy lenses briefly on my new Sony A7rII. I haven’t done any proper testing. With those points made I have observed that the legacy lenses are performing much better. CA seems to be markedly less. This was particularly noticeable on the Minolta MD 135mm F2. At F2 on the first A7r purple fringing was always present now it is much reduced. I had a similar problem, though not so great with the Minolta AF 500mm reflex lens.. there are still hints of CA… but that lens now produces phenomenal pictures. What has Sony done? Tomorrow I am trying the beer can and the MD 24mm VFC I will see if the same occurs.

Hope to see a review from Phillip Reeve about legacy lenses performance.
On “JPEG OOC” side, sand is bluish and half of the sky, overcast relatively low contrast sky, is blown. Really, Sony?
Put it in “vivid” mode? I always use vivid when I have to use jpeg.
I think it’s ok for a straight from the camera image w/ no presets, etc… Nobody except of Alin Popescu and the “king of tupperware” Gary Fong doesn’t shoot JPEG anyway.
I shoot JPEG on Olympus very often. It rules, except in the hardest of conditions (where I shoot RAW). In sports/continuous shooting the buffer is much longer, clearing time is faster, and savings in processing time for hundreds/thousands of pictures are huge – it is worth it even in very bad gym lighting.
Shooting all kinds of beaches in all kinds of weather all the time, never seen blue sand in my pics. 🙂
I’m not sure I see the problem. If Olympus is wonderful stick with them.
Isn’t it that simple?
Then how come I have the RAW too, dear Oleg? When I test a new camera I shoot both RAW and JPEG because many times there is no software to read the new RAWs 😉
That was a joke, I’m sorry Alin… 🙂 I just can’t imagine people shooting JPEG on such a great sensor.
Yes, I remember when I got the A7m2 last year, neither OS X nor Adobe Camera RAW supported it, but the native Sony Image Data Converter had no problems reading the RAWs, and I doubt Sony would release a camera without making sure the files can be read by the IDC. So I ended up converting the RAWs to 16-bit/channel TIFFs and then post-processing the TIFFs in LR. The early Adobe Camera RAW versions also didn’t support the A7r files as good as the IDC for some reason, and I remember lots of folks did the same (RAW -> IDC (TIFF) -> LR / PS) in order to get the “best” quality, plus the IDC provides a better control over the ARW’s “bells and whistles”: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/52809094. I can’t disagree with peevee JPEG could be necessary for shooting long bursts, but IMHO for everything else it would mean limiting yourself to 8-bit/channel compressed files, and all discussions about the incredible DR would have zero sense 🙂
OK, I totally agree with you. I’m on the RAW side of shooters, doesn’t matter the case. But when people waits for first impression when reviewing a hot camera, JPGs comes in handy. As I said, I shoot in this case RAW+Jpeg. In case I need advanced processing I go for the raw, otherwise, just to quickly post (maybe on site with my phone and Playmemories app) I use the jpeg :).
PS: I really hate the IDC (as you may already know, in the Box of the A7R II there is a flyer to use Capture One for Sony (so I suppose even Sony will quit IDC soon).
Just looked at Imaging Resources gallery. Seems Sony does blue really well. Everything looks blueish to me. Maybe I need to adjust my monitor…or my eyes. Waiting for my A7RII delivery tomorrow. But kind of missing the Fuji Velvia pop and color.
I may need a second A7r2 body, so I can take your camera in exchange for a few rolls of Fuji Velvia and you’ll get your pop and color back!
I’ll keep that in mind, Oleg. But first I think I will give the A7RII a try, maybe on vivid mode for JPEGs, and anything I want from RAWs. 🙂
It just looks like bad White balance to me…
The blue sand part is, but the blown sky?…
IDK, I haven’t tried, but fixing the white out of blue should make it look somewhat less blown.
The fact that the detail is there in the RAW side by definition means that the highlights aren’t blown.
Blown where? Check the histogram, it doesn’t even touch the right side.
http://oi62.tinypic.com/2dvndq8.jpg
The fact is even an iPhone could do better.
aaaand there he is. well played
The fact is, you’re talking proven nonsense again.
Is it RAW histogram or JPEG histogram?
Maybe you watch you JPEGs on non-existing 14EV monitors and print on non-existing 14EV paper, the rest of us have to deal with 7EV viewing media.
The image is fine. I’ve got 2 non-pro monitors here at work, that have been burning for a long time, and I can see detail in highlights and deep shadows just fine.
Fix your monitor. Turning down contrast from 100% to a lower value, would be a good starting point.
You were talking about parts being blown out and blue sand in the OOC jpeg, so of course this is about jpegs for which the 14 EV comment has no relevance. The left part of that image is relevant in that context and it’s not blown out, as shown in the histogram which covers both sides.
Your “blue sand” is busted too by the fact that the sand on the left still has higher average green than blue levels. Try a monitor calibration some time…
Are you saying that you don’t see the unnatural blue tint in the OOC as I do on my Dell UltraSharp? Sand is naturally yellow, meaning in RGB it is represented by mixture of red and green, it SHOULD have higher green component than blue. The question is not about that, it is about HOW MUCH (which is TOO MUCH) blue it has here. Use your eyes, not histograms. I do not believe you don’t see the blue tint there.
All I see is a hue as a result of a reflection from the boat’s paint.
I can’t see anything over the non blown out blown highlights
The only sand that is blue on my (calibrated) monitor is that immediately under the prow of the boat, and that’s presumably an effect of blue light reflected from the hull.
I think you meant to say: “isn’t blown out”.
I did mean to type “isn’t” not “is”. Apologies. My excuse is was that it followed a hard day putting up fence posts. Tiredness had set in.
You may be right that it’s only an effect of blue light reflected from the hull.
Of course it’s a mixture with blue, as it is in the LR output shown. How the balance should be, completely depends on:
A) the type of sand, there are many types of sand with just as many different colors. Which you would know if you have visited beaches in many different countries
B) the shooting conditions, since sand is partially reflective (crystals). You can even see this under the boat, where you’ll see more blue (reflected) in the sand, than behind the boat.
In short , you’d have be there to see which output matches reality better. Certainly, your comments are hard to take serious, after you’ve already proven that your monitor calibration is off (or your eyes) with the “blown” comments.
I have perfecly calibrated Eizo monitor and I see a blue tint on JPEGs part of image.
Because it is reflected from the ship’s blue hull, duh~
Must be the compressed raw leaving artifacts when downgraded to JPEG 🙂
Because you’re a green troll and everything looks bluish to you.
p.s.
m43 crowd is jealous that FF got BSI sensor before m43 (many, me included, have expected the smaller sensors to get BSI first).
LOL improved CA with a 135mm lens and even mirror lens! Truly this camera makes wonders.
🙂
Power of self-delusion. “I haven’t done any proper testing” should tell everything we need to know.
LOL the CA thing is such a BS. The A7r had CA problems with wide angle lens because of the micro-lens design, and no problems with the standard lens or telephotos. The A7r2 magically can cure CA, AIDS, etc… It probably can remove the mustache distortion from the Samyang 14mm lens, the new sensor just transforms into an anti-mustache and defeats the mustache!
BSI design actually would remove CA. That’s a a fact, not a fiction. It’s wiring on sensor that caused most of CA on digital cameras,
A7 was defective for me for two reasons: 1) Eye detection meant you could’t switch between Rear LCD and EVF effectively, the camera never got it right. 2) One touch MF zoom, like NEX 7 vs two touch MF zoom on A7. Since the Nex 7 is my primary camera, one cannot switch between A7 and NEX 7 because of the difference in MF glass handling… completely superior on NEX 7.
Since nobody has mentioned Sony fixing these things, I can only assume they are still broken.
It won’t exactly be a RAW engine that Sony will share with Adobe. What will be shared is the calibration data and how it relates to the meta-data that Sony passes over with the RAW file. (Incidentally, it’s this meta-data that passed over with effects which makes some people believe Sony cook the effects into RAW. They don’t, it’s all just the meta data that is passed over which is interpreted by the RAW converter).
Really? What about DXO writing Sony do NR B&R channels in A900? What about strange breaks in DXO DR/ISO curves (where, I suppose, NR kicks on)?
Read what I wrote. I was talking about effects and RAW files, not more general matters. Early Sony DSLRs did have some NR cooked in. But that was manifestly not what I was talking about.
I am offended by “this site uses cookies” line. If a person doesn’t like cookies, they can just use browser which doesn’t use them, or restrict cookies only to whitelisted sites. Someone should tell those politicians to bug off.
I agree. Or at least as a courtesy they could offer milk with those cookies.
I hope we get a 135mm soon. It’s really pissing me off. I will give all my A mount gear up for that lens and to a lesser extent a 70-200 2.8 (The F4 isn’t to bad). I need the AF. Nikon has a crap 135 and Canon’s is junk as well. I can’t believe the two big guns haven’t updated one of the most essential focal lengths for portraits PERIOD. So like, one of the few lenses that are still worth owning in A mount hasn’t been topped yet. I use it for everything- it’s my 50mm. Nikon does have that 200mm F2 but that’s like 3300.00 used.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SONY- WHERE THE HELLLL IS MY 135MM FE LENS WITH FAST AF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, if they manage to duplicate the ZA 135mm, but with fast AF, for the FE mount, I’ll be sold. I’ve been shooting more with that lens again lately, and man, it’s just so awesome.
I shoot weddings with two bodies. The 135mm on one and the 50mm zeiss on another- rotate between APSC and full frame. Seems to work- I keep getting gigs:)
Lol u shoot apsc… Hoolk come and smash wedding cake and your cmaera at next gig. Punish crop-crappers!
My arch nemesis! Hulk shoot crop- but don’t tell anybody.
Hoolk report you to FF police, you land in jail getting violated by m43 users.
Hopefully next year… I’ll be waiting for it more than I was waiting for the A7r2.
And man, real man dont shoot with puny Sony… Fegit
yeah, “Batis 135mm F1.8 with OSS” … I’m ready for that.
add me to the 135mm f1.8 or f2 list = High quality glass
You want focal length reflect your pathetic deek? Maybe look over at micro4turds forum. Pleas stop thinking about dicks… Feg
Meh, I’ll just stick to Capture One Pro. plus if you have a SONY camera, Express is free & Pro is $30
My Samsung phone can shoot a better photos, without any raws…
