The super RX1 deal on [shoplink 18165 ebay]eBay US (only three left in Stock)[/shoplink].

Well known photographer Massimiliano Angeloni (Click here) tested the RX1. He wrote that the camera is only 1cm far from perfection: “That centimeter in which there should be space for the sophisticated Trufinder 2 OLED (the viewfinder), a more useful battery, a more rational dial layout with the shutter speed dial.” Max is a well known Fuji photographer that finally started to use Sony cameras thanks to the RX1. We can argue a lot about Sony’s NEX and Alpha strategy but on the RX line Sony did almost everything right with the RX100 and RX1!
UPDATE: Also EosHD (Click here) just published the full RX1 review: ” I’ve been looking for a stealthy street camera with that Henri Cartier Bresson magic for a long time and now I finally have it, without resorting to the expense of a Leica system.”
And if you argue about the RX1 price than check the tree Open Box RX1 for sale at Top Rated Seller [shoplink 18165 ebay]Beachcamera on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. And if you need a grip check out the new JB grip at Amazon US (Click here).

Probably the most interesting camera after the NEX-7 was introduced. I hope they make a 24mm version.
Commercially bad idea. The ones who wants it buyes it anyway. Nobody would buy two!
Sorry. I want 24 mm too.
I am not sure I understood how and what is a bad commercial idea?
Very few extra buyers but extra cost! 35 mm is good enough to buy one. Nobody would buy two!!!
Ah, you are speaking about buying the 24mm >and< the 35mm. Yes, of course, you are right.
It takes lots of money in R&D. Zeiss will not do it for free with another 24mm version. The sale will not double but it steals some of the sales from potential 35mm buyer.
better off putting that money on developing the FF NEX, it’ll satisfy more people esp those who want alternate focal lenths to 35mm…
personally i’d love a 40mm and a 21mm so i might wait for the FF NEX and use the voigtlander 40mm f1.4 and 21mm f1.8 😀 can’t wait!
Hope they release a cheaper and smaller aps-c version very soon, to complete the RX lineup.
Maybe they will. Then again, you can already use a Nex with the 24mm Zeiss to get as close to the RX-1 as APS-C gets. You won’t have the same nice design, but you still will have a relatively compact camera, with better battery and good IQ at a fraction of the cost. The price of the separate Zeiss lens is mitigated by the high resale value, while the price of the RX-1 will probably plummet once Sony makes one with EVF or a new sensor. No reason not to lust after one, of course…
20mm pancake is not bad idea either.
The way Andrew (EOSHD) describes the camera and its use, its quirks and shortcomings, pretty much summarises the camera to what I would think it is:
The most important parts, it gets it so right.
Again, before the bashers come, the RX1 is only attractive for the 35mm crowd. For anyone else, look somewhere else. This is the best 35mm lens-ed camera.
I am very interested in this camera, but I also wish they added that extra 1 cm. My fear is that I acquire one, and Sony fixes their mistake and releases one with a VF and larger battery. I think there was a small battle among the one photographer at Sony and the marketers over the VF, and the marketers won. An add-on VF is ok, but it’s annoyance when you’re putting it into your bag. You gotta take it off to pack it and put it back on when you take it out to use. For $2700, I expect perfection.
For $2700, I can’t expect perfection. I also can’t expect that from a $7000 Leica with $3200 35 f/2 lens. It just depends on your needs. I agree with you on the viewfinder. I should have been an even better camera with one built in. However, even with that omission, the RX1 is still one of the most interesting digital camera’s ever built. Some call it a bargain, at less than the cost of any similar full frame solution with compact size.
RX1 and RX100 are both missing 1cm in length as well for a more secure and comfortable grip.
RX1 is an unique camera in the market such as a compact body with a FF-sensor and Zeiss lens. Therefore, even though its high price, people support this product. Lots of people including me, RX1 is much more preferable choice than a99 (if I have money). If you need a DSLR with a FF-sensor, you can buy D600, D800E, 5DIII, 6D instead.
NEX cameras WERE also unique products (mirror-less cameras with a APS-C sensor). But currently, there are lots of APS-C mirror-less and compact cameras in the market.
According to Japanese news, CEOs at the Sony’s electric departments gave up their bonus (which consists of 20-50% of their annual salary; please ref to “asahi.com”) because they failed to turn around the electric departments to be profitable.
RX1 is a symbolic example that Sony’s best camera was designed by the Cyber-shot department but not the department making Alpha cameras. It has been proved that SLT is not good enough and APS-C mirror-less design no longer has an advantage over the competitors. Sony needs to introduce innovative cameras. I do not like Sony has been making very similar cameras under different names like NEX3, NEX3C, NEXF3, NEX3N. Sony was used to be very innovative company and people want to have Sony’s products.
I hope that RX1 is the beginning of a new approach. Sony will give us dreams!
Now when you say “gave up” – do you mean they refused it out of honour, or their contracts stipulated they wouldn’t receive it if they underperformed? There’s a big difference.
expensive! 35 mm for a leica price… bah!
im quite tempted to get a hack saw and chop out the flash on my RX1 and stick a viewfinder in that little square…. when it arrives in a few days of course 😛
Here you have the forerunner of the SLT replacement. Take the criticisms that you have here, solve them, and put them into a full-frame SLT type body. For example put in a battery with a longer life, ability to take interchangeable lenses, more buttons and controls, and a larger more ergonomic size. In that larger body, put in more electronics for a larger buffer, tethering, dual memory cards, GPS, WI-Fi, etc. and provide all kinds of apps. Think of all of that room you will have with that mirror gone.
1cm? I thought it is about 6cm.
That’s what she said.
cm or inch? hahaha
Really enjoyed reading the review on EOSHD. Very well done.
Sony should say ‘stuff the NEX-9’ and bring out a simple FF RX system camera. They should release it with 5 lenses – 17mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 90mm. They should say from the start that there will only EVER be these 5 lenses (so no bickering about the number of lenses) and leave it at that. Their RX line is quite revered among the photographic community, even if NEX isn’t. You would get more people investing in glass for at because a) it isn’t a full replacement system as such but b) it also has all of what most people will ever need in such a system and c) it isn’t trying to be all things to all people. People who buy Leica’s normally only buy 1-3 lenses, for this type of camera it is all people need.
Call it the RX.
Censored again? Why?
This camera is only for fans…! …actually useless! For this price this camera should have interchangeable lenses, dual memory card support, WI-FI, open source app api, EVF, fast AF, weather protected, a good kit lens, more control buttons, built-in sensor stabilization & less noise in high iso mode.
Eisenvater–
Not at all “useless”.
Interchangeable lenses? No. This system is sealed, preserving perfect alignment, not admitting any dust, and permits a unified lens/sensor design, all superior to any interchangeable lens system.
etc.
Although I don’t yet own one, your post has not convinced me not to buy one–which I very well might.
Seems like most people wants everything they need for $1 or maybe even free…
Come on people… look at 5DM3 just the body alone is $3,299.
I will not be surprised if the upcoming FF mirrorless a-mount would be the same price or more for just the body alone.
It would be a DSLR sized with RX1 image quality,
Interchangeable lenses (a-mount),
5 millon dot EVF,
weather sealed,
IBIS,
Dual bionz,
Dual AF,
AF-D,
Dual memory card,
Wifi,
GPS
Just this alone would find many buyers, RX1 has done many rights.
Imagine with all the extra space that they could use for if they used it on a dslr size body along with interchangeable lens.
