Hot things to know:
Sony claims the A6000 has the “world’s fastest autofocus”!
The A6000 hybrid AF covers 92% of the imaging area!
The major letdown: EVF is smaller and of lower resolution compared to the NEX-6. But IR writes: “However, comparing the two side-by-side, the A6000’s EVF is the clear winner as it produces much more accurate colors and easy to discern details.”
There is also a Silver A6000 but it’s not coming in US yet.
AmateurPhotographer: “Looking at 100% crops of a garden scene containing a mix of stone and plant detail, the A6000, utilizing diffraction reduction technology, managed to resolve sharper edge detail and reduced haloing compared to the 24.2-million-pixel Nikon D5300, particularly at f/11. Colour and contrast also appeared slightly more accurate on the images printed from the camera.”
A6000 has selective focus speed for smooth video transitions and steady shot for video.

Disappointed to see the AVCHD badge. Excited at the price point, though! $800! Wonder what sort of sacrifices they will have made relative to the competition (E-M5/10 and the higher end Fujis).
Well it’s got a pretty poor native lens outlay compared to Fuji (unless you’re a fan of slow, poorly performing lenses), and then there is that awful Sony-esque interface.
But, overall, the pricing is probably lower mainly due to Sony’s superior resources and experience with industrial design versus the competition and it is likely priced based more on the market than the cost anyway.
Which is to say, there probably isn’t much actual compromise here. Just resource advantage.
Ah, geez, poorly performing lenses…
I’m disappointed it’s not an a-mount. No a-mount has best sensor or AF claim now. Nothing?????? WTF?
This “best AF” claim is total BS.
It doesn’t have the best AF. Complete nonsense for them to claim so.
LOL at the paranoid A-mounters in denial mode. Worried, much?
In fact, new A-mount cameras should have an extra Denial mode. PASMD.
No it’s just that some people here know photography tools and this mirrorless certainly isn’t going to be the fastest AF camera as they claim.
Under less than perfect light it is going to be rubbish.
You hope.
I’m disappointed to see a Sony employee doing reviews on these cameras when he only took up photography when he got the A7. Sony needs to send itsdank on a course if he is representing them. He makes loads of basic mistakes in his videos. He has a classic newby problem of always centering his subjects.
That’s a bit harsh. You seemed to have done your google research. I guess if you put yourself out there you should be able to know what you are talking about.
Yes. They need to at least get away from the AVCHD specs top limit of 28Mbit/s and give us something closer to what the cameras are actually capable of, which is probably higher.
Put this in perspective though, the GH4 is just the GH3 with 4k, and the GH3 is just the GH2 with a nicer case and more stable firmware at higher bitrate.
If you’re Sony mount and want better video, get a GH2 from fleabay as they’re dirt cheap and work well with Sony lenses so you’re not going to need anything other than the camera body (hacked GH2 with Sony mount Tokina 11-16mm is a cheap video powerhouse: never overheats, real pixel downsampling rather than no binning and then strong anti-moire blur filter, 100Mbit stable easily, and capable of 150Mbit/s, no 30m video length limit). Hell, even my LX7 beats Sony A-mount for video quality.
Which is sad because Sony A-mount trounces Panasonic in video for everything *except* bitrate!
Sorry ‘everything except bitrate and pixel binning’.
CONSUMERS BEWARE..TO UTILIZE THE NEW SUPER FAST AF YOU NEED TO REPLACE ALL YOUR AMOUNT, NEX, AND OTHER LENSES WITH NEW PROOPRIETARY SONY LENSES ………AGAIN!!!
Right. Nevermind that it use same lens as the NEX-6.
Why are Sony users so goddamn paranoid?
I am revisin my statement after consulting with Sony represntatives.
Dual autofocus will work with all native E mountlenses ONLY. It will not work with any other lens that uses an adapter.
As to why sony users are so paranoid we have good reason.
Sony has screwed. A mount users and is screwing anyone that wants to use anther lens on E mount cameras by making them only partly functional.
Although basic features will work more advanced features like high speed autofocus and IBIS will not
E mount users can say so what Sony has not screwd us yet..but dont worry.. your NEXt.
So you were wrong Barry.
Are you going to apologise for posting garbage?
I corrected my error and mycomment is now accurate.
If everyone…including yourself…apologized every time they posted garbage we would be spending a lot of time reading apologies.
Such arrogance.
Post like this always make me wonder what kind of photographer the person behind it. Don’t tell me you are actually a teenage boy Barry. Are you?
The viewfinder is a very important aspect and is taken a backwards step, that is all there is to say.
Plus, in silver it looks … .
“area-specific noise reduction” – is there hope for good jpgs?
There is no video quality progres 🙁
0.06s AF?!?!
Yes, and imagine what would those m43 people will have to say about this.
thats easy: ISO 3200 looks like crap. Entry level m43s look better at 6400.
You wont notice the difference between 0.6 and 0.7 seconds, but all that noise…
“Smaller sensors have better noise than bigger sensors”… sounds exactly like what a mFT user might say 😀
Please have a visit at DXOmark for noise performance betweem m43 vs nex6 or Nex5N, them tell who’s the ISO winner…
Good day (or night?) Andrea, what a hard work there. Thank you!
Its has “24.3 MEGAPICKLES!!” emblazoned very prominently on the back. This is so tacky and bespeaks of consumer trash marketing. Thats it, Im done. Sony really showed its might back when the NEX 7 came out. But this as a 6/7 ‘upgrade’ is embarrassing and shows me that Sony has no interest in keeping a strong NEX 7 user as a customer. Fuji X-T1 with a Fujinon 14/2.8, 35/1.4 and 56/1.2…here I come.
I think it really is two steps forward with the new processor + updated sensor and one step back with the RX10 EVF.
It’s good that the core product is still advancing, but the packaging could be more appealing.
2 steps better?? have you not seen the ISO tests?
I think Sony wants to close its APS-C camera branch like PC and TV ones…moreover Nex7 is still in store in France so I wonder if a real true not fake Nex-7 will appear this year
Yeah, have fun with that X-Trans sensor. You will be back.
I thought that’s what would happen with me, after years of Sony cameras and being especially happy with the NEX-7’s lovely 24mp sensor. But frankly, there are far too many more important aspects than a minor differences in pure image resolution where Fuji simply trounces Sony. The lens lineup is a huge part of it. Sony produces garbage lenses (and then people get really excited when a lens isn’t total crap like the 50/1.8 OSS) and overcharges for them while offering mediocre apertures and such. It’s really refreshing to shoot in a system that knows APS-C sensors demand larger apertures to compete with serious cameras and produces high quality lenses with those apertures at fair prices.
If Sony didn’t not have such disappointing lens options with incredibly slow progress expanding the range, I’d probably come back. Where is Sony’s 56mm f/1.2? And even if they had one it would probably be practically blurry wide open like the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 is (which I loved but you just can’t shoot that lens wide open on a NEX-7). The 23/1.4? Beautiful. That 2/3rds stop makes a HUGE difference, and it’s really effectively a whole stop since the 24/1.8 on NEX is so poor at f/1.8 that you need to consider it to be an f/2 lens. Then the XF 14mm f/2.8 is just damned near perfection. Sony doesn’t even approach this lens class at all. 21mm is an extremely popular focal length for many applications, but, especially landscape. It’s about as wide as you can go without the image looking obviously extreme. Zeiss has a wonderful 21mm lens. There’s nothing in the NEX line except a mid quality zoom.
You can see more examples like this if you continue to compare.
I really like NEX cameras, but, I just can’t keep ignoring Sony’s terrible lens history.
I’ve also shot both platforms heavily. Started with the NEX line (3,5 and 7) and then moved to the Fuji (X100, X100s, X-Pro and X-E1) I was/am an official Fuji X photographer and still love their products however the A7 brought me back to Sony as a perfect compliment to my A900 and the files simply trounce (to borrow your word) anything on Fuji. Sorry, that’s a cold hard truth.
I agree with you on the lenses and if I was staying on APS-C that would be a major consideration. Fuji simply has too many great optics for fair prices. No argument there. With Sony, you really have to look to the Zeiss options but the pricing is not competitive and the lenses not as fast. Now the new FE lenses are a different story. Still not super fast but God the quality is a whole new level and the 55 1.8 renders a more shallow DOF than the Fuji 35/1.4 anyway.
On to X-Trans. Yes, it is sharper than comparable NEX APS-C files but marginally (no trouncing) and you need to pixel peep. On top of that, the files just aren’t as malleable or organic as the Sony files are. Color certainly pops with Fuji blue-greens but they are not as accurate. I always felt like I was wrestling with X-Trans files and I hope this improves with time.
Each platform has its merits and I think it comes down to the comfort level and requirements of the individual. And of course, if you want the latest in high resolution lenses and Full Frame capability, Sony is the only game in town at the moment. Fuji appears unwilling to upset the apple cart and jeopardize the momentum they have with APS-C which is probably a great idea but I’m not sure how it will play out in the long game.
+1
what i dont understand why so much people here bluffing on move on fuji for lenses?
then go get your apsc FUJI
when A8R arrived with A6000 AF speed and newest 10 FE lenses, i bet you’ll be back to SONY again.
I agree that fuji has better lenses but maybe something was wrong with your copy of the 24mm 1.8. I returned mine and sold my nex-7 for a nex-6 but my copy was sharp I just did not understand why it was not that much better than the 30mm 2.8 sigma I paid 100.00 for compared to about 1,200 for the 24mm 1.8.I will probably rent a x-t1 and test it out.I did not like the x-e1 compared to my nex-6. Fuji is a special company because I hate zooms but I could leave the 18-55 on a fuji camera and never complain.
if your 24 1.8 is blurry wide open on the NEX7 I think you got a bad copy. All reviews of this lens rave about it and I shot thousands of pictures with it wide open and none of them is blurry due to the optics.
The 50 1.8 is an excellent lens and the only stabilised 50. The kit-zoom is one of the best kit zooms on the market. The 16-50 is optically corrected but for jpeg shooters a very decent lens for it’s size. The Zeiss 16-70 F4 is a very good lens. The Zeiss touits are stunning lenses. The 3 Sigmas (19,30,60) are very nice and cheap. The 20 2.8 is a solid performer. The 18-200 is one of the best travel zooms on the market. The 35 1.8 is a very good lens. The FE lenses are also very good and usable on all NEX cameras. The 10-18 wide angle zoom is one of the best on the market.
The ONLY lens I could think of one could call crap (wide open) was the old 16mm 2.8 pancake! The rest must be a typical Anti-Sony myth you picked up on several forums all over the internet, please share some facts.
By the way: Lenses faster than F1.8 don’t make much sense on a digital camera as there is no additional light gathering compared to the effort.
If you like Fuji more, go ahead, it’s a nice system with some good lenses. But don’t expect your pictures getting dramatically better.
…”But frankly, there are far too many more important aspects than a minor differences in pure image resolution where Fuji simply trounces Sony.”
The NEX 7 walks all over the Fuji offerings in terms of output resolution, even with most of the existing lenses. That’s based on controlled side by side tests, rather than gut feelings.
Well, it clearly shows that you either haven’t used a Sony or are entirely biased. Sony’s lenses are hardly “garbage” and Sony is certainly not “overcharging” compared to Fuji.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonynex7/images/frontpage.jpg
maybe you should look at the 24mp pasted on the front of the nex 7 also.
Have fun at fuji…
I dont need a picture of the NEX 7. I see 24MP on the front of MY nex 7 everytime I pick it up. Well, I did until I put on a Gariz half case. Which I used to ‘fix’ the grip coming off of my 1200 dollar camera. I thinks listing the MP’s is tacky on my camera and I think its simply worse on the NEX 6000. Yep, Im going to continue to call these cameras NEX until the end of freaking time just to spite Sony. Somewhere Sony has failed to understand that photographers are Artists and visual artists at that. Design and branding are also visual arts and frankly this camera just does nothing for me and seems consumer tacky.
And i intend to have a ton of fun ‘at’ Fuji. The camera is simply a tool, an extension of my vision as a photographer. The NEX 7 has been a good tool for me and remains a good tool now. But looking back at Sonys progression over the last 2 years I see absolutely NO GUIDING DRIVE to create a coherent system. Especially not one that I have faith in. Relying on third party manufacturers to fill in gaping holes in your lens line is just fail. The ONLY reason I have stayed with the NEX line is that I shoot old manual focus lenses almost exclusively. But Fuji has created some absolutely wonderful, modern lenses that handle and feel like my legacy lenses. With modern optical formulas and coatings to boot. I mean, seriously….look at the Fujinons…
14/2.8
18/2
23/1.4
27/2.8
35/1.4
56/1.2 <—-Holy Crap Batman!
60/2.4 macro
All of these are made in Japan, and either all metal or mostly metal while having a metal lens mount. Thats just classy. Add to this the 18-55mm f/2.8-4 "kit" zoom that is constantly rated as the best in the biz AND the new weather sealed fast zooms coming out along with the 10-24/4 wide zoom and its a no comparison, hands down Fuji whoop fest. And they brought this to market in less time then Sony took bringing its weak, all over the place lens lineup to bear. Sony has WAY to many E mount bodies out in relation to its lens lineup.
That Fujinon lens selection has restored my faith in modern lenses being able to be quality made with high quality optics AND have aperture rings while not obtaining gargantuan status like Canon L glass.
Simply put, the Fuji X system is a well thought out and perfectly executed solution for a photographer looking for a high quality and portable camera system.
Again, this is coming from a Sony user of over two years who is simply disappointed that THIS camera above is what Sony has managed to come up with. The A7 gave me hopes, but they have not been followed thru on. And again, here is my flickr photostream that shows what I have done with my NEX 7 in that time.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8539414@N07/sets/72157629936411965/
But also look at the first 6 images in my favorites….they were all shot on the Fujinon 35/1.4. Simply gorgeous.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8539414@N07/favorites
Ive had a good run with Sony, made some great images using a sweet little camera. But I have no faith in them as a company who understands the market they are competing in.
“I thinks listing the MP’s is tacky on my camera (…) Im going to continue to call these cameras NEX until the end of freaking time just to spite”
> Well, that says a lot.
Same here… want to upgrade from my 5N, but with the weak/large/expensive FE lenses available for the A7, a (formerly) NEX 5/6/7 line that has been downgraded across the board, and the stellar offerings from Fuji… I think I’m jumping ship from SONY as soon as I can feel an X-T1 with my own hands.
Yes, if you are price conscious, Fuji has the best bang for the buck in their lens offerings.
If you can stretch a little, the new FE lenses are at a higher level. The 55/1.8 on the A7 is in my view, significantly better than the Fujinon 35/1.4 on the X cameras. DxO confirms with their measurements what I see on my screen (I have an archive of files taken with the Fujinon and an X-Pro) and rate it the highest performing AF lens they have ever tested.
Yes, the 55 is a bit longer but the overall system weight and size are not significantly different. In the end, it comes down to price and sometimes you do get what you pay for. That said, the Fujinon is truly excellent and is probably the best value out there.
And disagree about your downgrade statement. Sony is claiming this is a NEX 6 replacement and on that merit it is a much improved camera. I would even say it is much improved over the 7, depending on your criteria.
How negitive are you ……… This thing Kicks arse .I bet its as specs are better than the cannon 7D MK2 .Thats when the 7d ieventualy ends its half a decade reign .
Wait, please don’t go to Fuji (note the sarcasm). Hope you find your greener grass but I suspect you will just find a different patch in a different shade of green.
Black PVC tape is your friend.
no microphone or headphone ports 🙁 come on sony … 🙁 🙁 🙁
You know what, I was just about to say the camera looks fine but then I saw your comment and noticed there was no mic input. To me that was the only problem I had with my nex-6. They really should have added a mic input to really call this a 6/7 replacement. To me this is a nex-6 upgrade. I like it and all but wish it had a mic input. This and a 35mm 1.8 24mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 and I may not get the fuji x-t1 but I will wait for reviews before I decide.
Mic input is reserved for the A7000.
I wish it had
XAVC S video
Mic and headphone jack
A7 OLED EVF
And white magic rear touchscreen
But for the price it’s a great bargain
I’d rather pay more $$$ and get what I we want.
I’d rather buy a 50% more expensive a7r that looses the hump, and adds IBIS and EFC with a decent burst speed and a larger battery (or uses 2 NEX batteries), but that’s not happening.
You obviously don’t care about size and weight. Why don’t you just buy an a99? Or do you think physics can simply be ignored for the sake of your ridiculously consumer demands? heh Seriously, you can have all you want from an a99 with a battery grip. Ignore the size and it’s clearly the camera you want.
There’d still be a big difference in size even if those features are added. I don’t really care about weight though, I’d rather premium E-mount lenses had brass focusing helical and mecanically coupled aperture ring/focus ring. I don’t like the current toyish lenses on E-mount. I do like the a99’s design, but I need E-mount as most of my lenses are legacy.
You actually support Sony for using the same battery on half-frame bodies as on FFs? I really don’t see the need whatsoever. These aren’t the same line of products and there’s no need for cross-compatible batteries. It sacrifices longivity and interrupts your shooting, not to mention bringing in the risk that you may forget to bring/charge your spare(s).
Sigma’s even used a new battery in its new dp Quattro for better battery life, which is technically down the same line of products as the dp Merrill.
I was comparing the size of my A7 to a minolta maxxum 7000 and I really wish they made the a7 big enough to use the A99,a900 battery.
No second dial, no mic, no real improvements, and no release of some good e-mount lenses???? Goodbye Sony…Hello Fuji.
The Fuji astroturf army has is really working overtime today.
+1, lol. They are all out today.
I don’t understand why ppl think it’s the “Fuji army” coming. I wanted to pull the trigger on the NEX7, but hesitated because of the horrible choices of lenses. But the lens selection, Sony firmware and it’s unknown future kept me from buying into the line up. Fuji just seems to know where it’s going.
I’ll be very clear…I wanted Sony to succeed, but they’ve taken a step back instead.
Have you read the comments? Apparently, Sony is making “garbage lenses” and is “overcharging” for them, while doing “consumer trash marketing” by writing the number of MP on the body.
And now you are talking about Sony’s “unknown future”, but what about Fuji’s future? They are the one who made cameras before and stopped. And what is wrong with Sony’s firmware, comparatively speaking?
Hello second division camera manufacturer 😛
the spec seems very confusing, if there wont be a a7000 with “adult” spec, than it is very pity. SONY has confused me a bit, or there is a new strategy and we will see the quality in other products?
Well, just an updated NEX 6.
No mic or headphone ports (thus no audio monitoring), no touch screen, worse EVF, no TriNavi, no GPS. Just another P&S in my book.
For those looking for a mic, the ECM-XYST1M should work with this. There’s probably other options I’m not aware of, too.
Yes, that should work, but it’s just an ok mic.
ECM-XYST1M is bulky solution. There is no way to film stealthy.
Bulky? For an external mic? No way.
If stealth is the priority, I’d think that you’d just use the built-in mics…
I wonder what 100 or even 200 more could have added to this camera? 1,000 for a 6/7 replacement would still be a good price with more features.
Seems like a nice camera for the price, but lack of mic and headphones jacks is a disappointment. As is the viewfinder. Those two things will keep me from purchasing.
just wow ….. but still sticking with my nex5n and waiting for the a7000(nex7)..^^ OR until the a7 drops price ^^
Same lcd as on my old 5n? EVF not competitive with XT1? Aside from AF improvements, has the image quality of the sensor been improved over that in NEX 7???? Pretty darn cheap, no rush to preorder for sure. Await tests of sensor with wide angles. Fuji maybe even Sigmas new Quattro…
I’m waiting for a better balanced E-mount FF but dp1 Quattro is higher up on my list!
I think, a6000 is (nex-5 + nex-6) replacement. Nex-7 looks much more better and more elegant than a6000. Also a6000 thicker and uglier than Nex-7. I hope they will introduce a7000 as a upgrade for Nex-7, if not – I will keep my Nex-7.
why its cheaper than nex7? What make the nex7 worth more than a6000?
because it’s not successor next,
A6000 release to changed nex 5. i don’t get it why everyone still complaining with this nice camera. just try it and get yourself go out there to take a photograph
Why can’t A-mount get some of these Fastest AF features?
It maybe fast, but for tracking dedicated PDAF sensor is better.
Why do you say that? You haven’t tried one, and the video shows astonishingly good tracking.
Good luck tracking with a mirrorless in anything other than excellent light.
Just saw the release video if the A6000. That autofocus looks insane!! Sony is killing it!!! Who ever says Sony is not committed to its shooters is nuts…Looking forward to seeing what improvements in autofocus is up Sony’s sleeve for the A mount..
Totally agree! Very excited to see what Sony does with A-Mount. I think they are about to drop a a-mounted game-changer on the industry and make these e-mounts look like toys.
+1
Sony’s really attacking its competition head on this year. I’ve never seen them this aggressive. I am quite impressed.
This camera is a winner.
+1 Very impressed and optimistic about the next coming FF A-mount. I’m glad I’ve chosen Sony over Canon and Nikon.
The main question now is:
Is this the top end of Sony’s APS-C mirrorless line up?
Is there really no high-end NEX 7 successor on the horizon?
I suspect that this is indeed the new top-end for APS-C mirrorless. I think higher up will be handled by FF. Which makes me doubt that there will be much in the way of new, high-quality E-mount lenses that aren’t FF (and thus bigger than needed for these small cameras).
I thought this was 800.00 but it is 650.00 for the body. I could live with this. I think I may get one to go with my A7. They must be holding out for something better though. For the price this is a nice camera. I can’t wait to see how this matches up with the new fuji that cost just over twice as much as this camera.
Yeah, on paper it looks pretty impressive. The Sony dethrones Fuji’s claim of fastest AF – that didn’t take long. No stupid locked ISO dial that actually slows you down. EVF is an unknown – Imaging Resource says it is way better than the NEX 6’s but the Fuji’s is reported to be tops and certainly has a greater magnification.
But for almost half the cost and with a sensor I prefer over X-Trans, the A6000 seems like a certain bet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6N2KQ26fd4
Have a look
the AF performance is incredible!
Before anyone notices, I forgot to turn a sound channel off at the end but other than that, enjoy the video 🙂
Thanks Dan! Cool bird you have there 🙂
She hasn’t murdered me in my sleep yet so it’s all good 🙂
lol 🙂
The downgraded EVF and lack of touchscreen are serious bummers. TriNavi would’ve been nice, too.
Even with that, though, it’s still a lot of camera for what it costs!
Is the NEX-7 form and tri-nav controls gone and extinct? I do not think so and I suspect that Sony has reserved this for a full-frame NEX that will be priced lower than the A7 and A7R. I think a full-frame rangefinder style NEX-7 type camera priced $300-$500 lower than the $1,700 A7 will be Sony’s next camera release and will certainly present CaNikon with a more formidable challenge … so long as Sony along with Zeiss will provide the lenses.
I prefer the NEX-7 form to that on the A7/A7R for several reasons. First off is my preference for the EVF to be on the left most side of the camera so I do not needlessly smear the rear LCD screen with my nose. The second reason is the NEX-7 shutter release is better positioned forward on the big hand grip rather than having have to reach back to the camera. This makes for a comfortable hold even for extended use. Third, I find the Tri-Nav controls as to be very quick and convenient as I can change the settings on the twin rear controls using my thumb while keeping my right index finger perched on the shutter release and always ready and available to instantly shoot. I do wish that the rear screen was a touch screen with a quick on and off button to activate touch screen. I also wish that there was a quick way to directly designate the AF focus point like one can do using a dSLR. An easily reached AF-on button would quickly round up the package. Finally, a tilting EVF like that on the Panasonic GX-7 would make this irresistible.
I’m with you! I’m just worried that if this is the new high-end for mirrorless APS-C, Sony won’t have much reason to improve the weak lens lineup – all the good new stuff will be bulky FF lenses, which I don’t need or want.
Basically an updated nex6. I don’t understand exclusion of external mic jack and lower res evf unless Sony is leaving room for an a7000.
Pretty sure about that. Can’t think any other reason.
It seems quite nice but it is thicker than both NEX 6 and NEX 7. Don’t know why. I’m now wondering whether I should stay with my 5R for a little longer and wait for NEX 7 replacement (if there is any) or just upgrade to a6000
I would just wait a little longer and see what happens.
why wait for the A600000 , THE a6000 is a game changer for you 5R .
Does it support external live view?
Love the price and at least the initial reports of super fast AF. I’ll want to see some more real world tests to back it up, but factoring in the price, I’m fairly impressed.
No external live view – see: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-a6000/3
“One new feature on the a6000 is the ability to control the camera from your Mac or PC. You can adjust the majority of camera functions from your computer, though the one thing that’s not available is a live view of whatever you’re about to photograph.”
That’s a bummer. Hopefully it gets added in a firmware update.
Noooo. Downgraded EVF, no GPS, no external mic input. Why? Why the EVF? NOOO.
I was angry too, but than I read the EVF has much better color rendition and detail sharpness.
How can detail sharpness be better with about half the resolution?
I actuallay had difficulties to tell sharp from unsharp with the EVF in the NEX 7, wishing for even higher res.
I guess better quality over quantity. We will have to wait for the the review but in life sometimes more can be done with less.
EVF also have optics inside, it is much sharper due to new lens design in the EVF, better than first generation EVF used on the NEX-7
On the Fuji platform, I far preferred manual focusing on the X-Pro with its lower res EVF compared to the X-E1. Edge detail was much more apparent. Refresh may not have been good but resolution was not a problem.
It’s about 40% less. If the brightness and color rendition are really improved, it could still be decent. We’ll see…
my Sony a500 has just 230k dots LCD screen, while my A7 has 921k dots.
While the a500 has 4 times less resolution, it has better sharpness and I can focus better with the LCD screen. More doesnt mean better, and Im sad I cant focus properly with this screen 🙁
Well, DPreview claims the EVF is noticably worse.
DPReview doesn’t seem to like Sony lately… their review of the A7 was one of the few “good, not great” ones.
No they didn’t. They haven’t published their initial impressions yet, just a description of the features and specs.
Their comment: “The only way in which the a6000 falls short compared to that camera is with regard to the EVF, which is smaller and lower resolution.”
Is based on specs, not on a hands on comparison, which is what Imaging Resource did.
Well, doesnt’t sound like specs only:
“One thing we were disappointed on the a6000 is its lower quality OLED electronic viewfinder (when compared to its predecessor). It’s smaller and, more importantly, lower resolution (1.44M dots instead of 2.36M). If you’ve never used Sony’s XGA OLED viewfinder then you probably won’t notice, but if you have, it’s a noticeable step down.”
from: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sony-alpha-a6000/3
They state in the comments sections that they will have their hands on writeup posted tomorrow. All you are reading tonight are spec comparisons. I would be disappointed too unless I did a side by side comparison with the NEX 6 and found the A6000 to be the better – as Imaging Resource claims to have done.
I don’t care too much about EVFs anyway. As I wear glasses, viewfinders are a pain no matter what. But if it should be even worse than the one in the NEX 7, they could have left it out completely.
But: all theory is fine, but testing it personally will tell much more…
Because the sensor is better – faster at reading out the live view frames at higher resolution.
I had a 5N with EVF and later bought an Olympus E-M5, which has lower EVF resolution but looks way better because the live view is fed to the EVF at sufficient resolution and with low noise. 5N’s live view has lines skipped and is noisier.
1.4MP EVF vs 2.4 MP EVF
In the case of EVF strangely the number of subpixels are counted (3 basic colors red, green and blue). The 1.44 Megapixel equate to a 800×600 pixel resolution (=3x800x600) and the 2.4 Megapixel to 1024×768 resolution.
That means the REAL RESOLUTION in dpi is only decreased by around 20%! That’s probably noticeable if you only care for resolution and your eyes are good enough to see single pixels, but first reports say that color, dynamic range, noise as well as response time are all better on the new EVF.
Andrea, this is pathetic BS. Colors are only depends on the profile, they easily could do them look better with NEX-5n(r,t) and external EVF, as well as with NEX-6 and NEX-7. But, since they don’t care about their customers, no firmware updates fixing that.
And perception of higher sharpness is rather a consequence of even more tiny EVF.
OK, but this is not the camera I ever could to recommend: no touchscreen, inferior EVF. And, whatever mad zealots who wants fast AF are saying: it is not that valuable, especially for customer base this camera pointed to. Yet another Sony blind attempt to do something. I hope Sony will fail with sales. Heck! I hope Sony will be a bankrupt soon 🙂 It is more than probable: they obviously don’t know what they are doing and for what.
Emacs, chief whinger on SAR. Do you like anything? I bet you hate fluffy bunnies and puppies.
Obviously, he likes his keyboard. He’s forced to write code all day and in his breaks he spits out frustration. Consider kicking your boss, E, would give some physical exercise too!
I´m happy that sony, fuji, pentax, panasonic, olympus are pushing competition because that’s a win win situation for us the consumers, rather then the same canon rebel re labeling every year with no new features.
But I guess you are a fanboy.
Yes, I’m a fanboy of mindful approach. Unfortunately, Japanese stay being out of this criteria, and they have always been.
Yep, I a big fan of Russian camera manufacturers. They kick those pesky Japanese manufacturers into touch.
At US$650 for body-only and US$799 with SEL1650 kit lens, this is a rather attractive package. With an improved hybrid AF system and a higher-res 24MP sensor, I think the upgrades (from NEX-6) outweigh the minor downgrades (EVF res… which Imaging Resource actually says is actually overall better than the NEX-6 with better color).
While NEX-7 owners may still be waiting for a proper “upgrade”, I think most others should find this a worthy option. I know that if I had the cash… it’d be my choice to step up from my admittedly low-cost A3000. 😉
Agreed.
NEX 7 users need to be honest about what they want improved.
Faster AF? Check.
Better AF Tracking? Check
Better AF FPS? Check
Better High ISO performance? Check.
Better Menus? Check.
Better EVF? Possibly. Rez is lower but reports are that it is excellent
Better JPEGs? Probably
NEX 6 users, this one is a no brainer.
Better High ISO performance? Check.
How did you conclude this? Is it better than D7100? Please let me know. That was my only gripe with the previous generation Sony 24MP Sensor.
Nex is alive and evolving , the A6000 is a mid budget mirrorless , the proof is the low evf , there will be for sure better nex with bigger and faster evf at $ 1100 plus. this camera as is better than the nex 6/7. good upgrade from the nex 3 or 5, the competition still has to fill that gap . sony should improve on video and apc-s lens.
For those complaining about this update, have some perspective. Sony just revealed the fastest AF system yet, and based on the video evidence, it looks like they did it – .06 compared to Fuji’s claim of .08 AND 11 FPS with AF tracking, compared to 8 FPS on the Fuji at almost twice the cost!
And those complaining about the EVF as a downgrade from the NEX 6, check out Imaging Resources comment “However, comparing the two side-by-side, the A6000’s EVF is the clear winner as it produces much more accurate colors and easy to discern details.”
This camera reminds me of the X-E2 – a slow burner that garnered yawns on announcement and then built excitement when users realized how good it was.
The complainers are ridiculous. If the AF performance actually meets the promise, then it eliminates the one advantage dslr’s still maintain over mirrorless. There seem to be a bunch of ergonomic improvements over the NEX 6 too, including the new alpha/A7/r menu system.
A6000 with no mic-input and no way to connect the earphones for monitoring. That’s certainly not the NEX6 upgrade I was hoping for!
Photographers don’t care about mic inputs. If you want great hybrid video, you should be using a GH3.
Why would you have bought a NEX6 to begin with?
I bought my NEX6 mainly because of the small zize and weight. And because I can use all my A-mount lenses with LA-EA2 adapter on it. It also shoots quite good quality video, although with not so good sound quality because of the missing external microphone connector.
You know, some of us are really shooting both the photos and videos with our cameras, so just adding these little features (mic input, earphones connector) Sony could have made these models really nice hybrid cameras. Not doing this is really stupid!
I never quite understand why NEX users are trying to use these cameras for cinema, thats what the VG line is for. Sony has an entire professional line of E-mount cameras for video/cinema that utterly SHIT on these NEX cams, I don’t understand why you guys even BOTHER LOOKING AT THIS AND COMPLAINING- You aren’t the target market, of COURSE its not going to have videocentric features!
Well, I just canceled my A7 order. Hopefully Sony will implement this insane auto focus speed in the A8/A9
Would love to see it, but I wouldn’t cancel an order over it. The A7 AF and tracking is plenty fast. That camera is a powerhouse and if you can’t create great images with it, don’t blame the camera.
I’ve been burned by being an “early” adopter before (Nikon d600). Something like that leaves a bitter taste. Plus, the silver A6000 is growing on me.
I have the A7. Its AF is sweet as…Plus Full frame verse APS-C. The A7 is a great camera.
I like the A7 too, just wondering if sony has such a great tech for af after all, why is it absent from the FF model? To be honest, af could be improved
If you are content with APS-C, the A6000 should be an excellent pick and a very mature piece of kit.
The A7 is my favorite camera ever but I shoot FF A-mount and the interchangeability of all those FF lenses and the quality of the new FE lenses (55mm especially) is a dream.
B. Allen, you realize in this game things are always changing, always improving. While everyone sits back not wanting to be an “early adopter” of the A99, I have shot over 100,000 frames and doubled my publications. Unlike other users however, when the next A-mount FF comes out, I’m not going to suddenly ditch my A99.
The A7/A7R is a completely different animal from this camera, and this really shouldn’t deter you. Unless you sincerely want to wait that long and NOT be taking any pictures with as good a system as the A7/A7R while you wait…
Thanks for the advice fellas. I’ll take a second look at the A7. I was convinced about purchasing one, especially with the current deals going on. I just wish that I could handle one before purchasing. They never any of the Sony cameras available in my area (Tucson, AZ).
If you buy a A7 now with the discounts and you don’t like it you can return it or even sell it and not loose any money so i would go for it.
Interesting comment from AmateurPhotographer.co.uk:
“Looking at 100% crops of a garden scene containing a mix of stone and plant detail, the A6000, utilizing diffraction reduction technology, managed to resolve sharper edge detail and reduced haloing compared to the 24.2-million-pixel Nikon D5300, particularly at f/11. Colour and contrast also appeared slightly more accurate on the images printed from the camera.”
If its quality can top a D5300 (probably the best quality under $1k), I’d consider that a win!
No doubt.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Sony is simply taking the latest proven technologies delivered by Bionz X and applying them to this upgrade.
At this price point, this camera is a champ. Would take it over an X-E2 any day. What a bang for the buck!
Well, this could be a great thing for this camera’s audience, since it is obviously soccer moms and they won’t mess with RAWs anyway (where there will be no improvement). But, unfortunately for Sony, the audience just won’t care about per pixel sharpness.
I’ll tell you what is important to moms – high speed AF and subject tracking in a compact camera body.
It doesn’t matter: they will use their smartphones anyway 😉
Says your mom, cause you returned the camera since it didn’t have touch screen. Lmao!!
If this had a mic jack it would be – for me – a perfect camera. Purchasing that clunky hotshoe thing just to add a mic is almost antideluvian, especially when they had the jack in the built into the nex 7. I’d have paid an extra C-note for the jack. And an extra $200 for the Jill. 😉
the AF is amazing!!!
AF 0.06s is meaningless to me if it is static AF.
What matters is the AF speed and accuracy for continuous AF and tracking AF.
In the video the reviewer shoots his parrot launching from tripod on continuous 11fps at F1.8 and every shot is in focus. But sure, complain away!
Did you watch the video Stephen? Accurate tracking AF @ f/1.8 with 11 FPS!
How many DSLRs do get consistent AF at f1.8? Certainly not the majority.
The real question is if this fast AF also works in low light.
No mic input is a turn off for me.
God you guys never get tired of complaining do you??? Looks like a great camera for $800. If you can’t make your images with this (or much less), YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PHOTOGRAPHER.
Looking forward to seeing the new AF system implemented (hopefully) in the next flagship A-mount or hybrid A-E mount body.
http://www.frankwithersphoto.com
Make that a $650 camera!
Great performance and the price is stupid cheap. I hope olympus drops the overpriced em5 and 1 so I can grab that. I wonder how this stacks up to the a77?
Don’t plan on any major price drops for the E-M5. The E-M10 is the new entry-level model for the OM-D range, with a price tag to match. Sounds like it’s pretty close to the E-M5’s performance, though.
Using the same processor with the same amount of pixels as the a6000, not lacking EFC, I’m baffled again by how slow the a7’s burst speed is! a7r’s should also be 2.5x the current speed.
How else will they market the flagship A9 with 11fps and world’s fastest AF?
Hahaha… very likely.
This just doesn’t have enough to entice me over a heavily-discounted NEX-6, which I’ll start hunting for… right about now (upgrading from an F3). Anybody have an idea on when retailers/ebay sellers should start lowering their prices?
Will it take until April when this actually appears on the shelves? Or will an Amazon start dropping prices to clear inventory earlier than that?
My $0.02.
This camera have:
1) Poor EVF no matter reviewers’ BS about colors and detail discerning: 2.4Mp will be even better if Sony would care about their customers and make FW updates.
2) Finally, drop of excellent Sony color separation under the sauce of the “improved RGB filter”. I have no doubt this done in order not to look too bad in high ISO department compared to Toshiba 24Mp sensor in conditions where they must block some light which is somehow related to phase detection pixels on the sensor.
4) I believe in even more severe sensor induced ghosting and flaring than on A7.
5) Still, no touchscreen: the thing that drove me to buy A7.
Drove to sell, of course
Items 1-4 (you skipped number 3) are all conjecture spoken as fact
Item 5 makes no sense. How did you get an A7 with a touchscreen?
“Items 1-4 (you skipped number 3) are all conjecture spoken as fact”.
Yeah, he’s good at that.
LOL
Nice trolling effort, but none of your “5 points” are reality, just assumptions. We all know you don’t like Sony, so what are you still doing here and why should be believe you bought and sold an A7 because you recognized just after using it that it doesn’t have a touchscreen. Hahaha try better next time!
Emacs reminds me of Ken Cockwell, always has some BS to draw people attention.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12196364/gallery/different/Sony-A7.jpg
Used when selling it.
Agree about your #3 point, hahaha. Kidding.
hahahah!
Haha you literally made me laugh out loud.
Poorly programmed bot you are. Can’t even count to 5.
Why so many guys at SAR are so negative.
When OM-D EM10 was launched Olympus fanboys were excited. When Fuji X-T1 was announced fans at Fujirumor were more than excited. With less that half the price of Fuji X-T1 the A6000 is a winner, especially considering the amazingly fast auto focus and 11fps continuous tracking.
I can understand why NEX-7 owners are bit disappointed. But everyone else this camera is worth every penny. Both Fuji X-T1 and OM-D EM1 are way over priced. If you are NEX7 owner and either get A7/A7R or wait for some more time. There is no point in getting lower spec camera like Fuji X-T1 for such high price unless who are love with retro designs.
or if you want better lenses. I am fine with the 24mm 35mm and 50mm I even like the sigma 19&30. Fuji does have better lenses but for this price I am not so sure I will be getting the x-t1 anymore since I was planning on just leaving the 18-55 on it anyway. I really wish sony had a zoom like the fuji 18-55 and I don’t even like zooms.
It’s simply the usual trolls. Just shows that the camera is indeed interesting, otherwise they wouldn’t be here.
hahah, ok I see now. You sold your A7 because it didn’t have a touchscreen. ooooooooo K!
Now that you have clearly established your bonafides I will listen closer to what you have to say.
+1
I’m interested to see how the A mount is going to differentiate itself now that the last theoretical advantage seems to be gone.
Ergonomics and IBIS can be brought to E mount just by increasing body size so that won’t be a problem. Maybe they’ll do something exciting with the space left when the mirror is gone. (stuff like inbuilt ND, toggleable IR would be useful)
check out this AF!!

starts at 1:20
the sony guy says it is a nex-6 successor and never says it replaces a Nex-7 so looks like the surprise the admin spoke of may be a A7000 which would explain why it is a bit crippled in some areas and the price. Maybe 36mp a7000 with mic jack better evf etc.. I would say maybe btwn 1000 & 1200 for the A7000?
Is there an option to disable the “pre-focusing” behavior of the autofocus (even in AF-S mode) that creates the illusion of faster autofocus?
according to sony press release, yes, it turns pre-af off
1. Amongst interchangeable-lens digital cameras equipped with an APS-C image sensor as of February 12, 2014. Determined with internal measurement method with E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens mounted, Pre-AF off and viewfinder in use.
Regarding the survey, I cannot fathom how people can make a decision so fast based on advertised specs and previews alone.
Hi,
just saw a couple of first looks. (Above)
Seems like a great travel camera.
You could buy this as a second camera to your A7, use the same lenses and away you go, travel the world with great image quality fast auto Focus and less weight than DSLRs.
I wonder if Sony will bing out the a7000, do you know?
Because with the A7 and the a7000 and FE lenses, what a great travel and pro kit.
System cameras that are light and quality, Nikon and canon would be scared of that.
Happy shooting,
Mark
Very Nice AF, well done sony.
nice tracking, video are nice focus too,
DID THEY LIMIT ON F3.5 AGAIN ON AUTO FOCUS VIDEO???????? NOOOOOOO…
Can we get it over LA-EA4? Noooooo, this will works only on e glass protocols
Here’s my problem living in both a&e alpha world:
1. i have to invest more e glass over again on “the same” range to get this beast AF
2. but, e glass doesnt have gorgeous 135/1.8
3. a and e should have to works together to fullfill complete range, infact they’r NOT fully compatible, they works in different protocols thats why they came in NEX brand.
4. and sure your GREAT 55/1.8 FE cannot used on a-mount, wait until hybrid mount arrived
THEY ARE ON DIFFERENT WORLD GUYS!!! EVEN IN ONE ALPHA BRAND..
im on a crossroad between A and E, you cant have both
Not sure I agree.
I use both on all my assignments and readily switch between my A900 and the A7. On the A7 I shoot FE lenses, manual focus legacy glass and A-mount on the LAEA-4. Usually keep the wider lenses like the Minolta 35/2 on the A7 and use Steady Shot on the A900 for the Zeiss 85mm and 135mm.
Dream Team!
sure Chad, im not talking about manual focus, and 15 AF point of la-ea4
i want this new a6000 af performance with 70-400+LA-EA4 it will be great for sport, but i CANT,
LA-EA4 works only supported a-mount glass protocols, coz theres no way a-mount glass will works with this fabulous tracking e-mount AF protocols
even they make LA-EA5 its not the adapters fault, its the A-glass that cant understood the way a6000 of doing AF.
Got yah!
How would the LAEA-3 work with A-mount lenses with SSM?
Exactly what I wonder… are the converters with built-in PD AF modules only yet another intermediate step?
We’ll see.. as there’s likely no single photographic subject one cannot catch with either A- or E-mount based bodies I’m very relaxed. What would /force/ me to invest in both systems at a time? And, if I would feel a need to invest in both systems, e.g. for convenience reasons, what makes A- vs. E-mount different from say Nikon vs. Fuji-X mount discussions? The only difference is the vendor of the mount. Otherwise it’s been my very own decision to buy into two distinct mounts.
Quite happy with the A6000 specs. Hope it can deliver in day to day use… if so, I might buy it and use it until it falls apart as specs cry ‘good enough, spent your money on something else in the years ahead’.
It can’t. The problem is that OSPDAF cannot work with A Mount Lens Electronics. Its something to do with the way the lenses focus. I assume that rechipped A Mount Lenses may (And a big MAY) focus like E Mount lenses. But Sony would rather just sell new E Mount glass.
+1
@Chad i never use le-ea3 sory
I don’t quite understand the argument. In computer science it is no rocket technology to translate protocol A to protocol B. It probably requires an Sony engineer with deep knowledge of either protocol to comment whether there are such incompatibilities that mapping from protocol A to protocol B is impossible. Without such a statement – I am not aware of any such – I see no pressing reason why the protocols cannot be mapped. Hence, a protocol mapping E-A converter should be possible.
As we know, such converters exist. Their AF performance is poor. From what I understood the reason of poor AF is not the protocol mapping itself. I recall an argument that lenses optimized for PD AF do not work well with contrast based AF. Whether true – I do not know.
However, protocol mapping as such is no rocket science. What caveats there are for E-A mapping nobody but Sony knows as only Sony knows the protocol.
From what I understand, it’s not the electronic signals, but rather the mechanical bits.
One of the biggest weaknesses of CDAF is that it can only identify that something is out of focus – it doesn’t know which way it needs to go to bring the subject into focus. That’s not the case with PDAF. Thus, CDAF-oriented lenses have to be built more for zipping back and forth, hunting for the correct focus, while PDAF lenses are built with the expectation that they will simply move straight to the position needed to focus.
AF performance looks very promising. Even if this camera is not the package we were hoping for, a higher end APS-C model would surely be a winner with this sensor and processor combination!
Imagine this: put the A6000’s sensor, complete with its 179 phase-detect AF points and 25 contrast-detect points in the A7 body, with the A7’s EVF and ports, and… Voila: A7000!
Andrea, any new info on the Pentax 645D II from the CP+ show. I’m interested to see how well this new Sony sensor is going to be and how cheap we can get into medium format!
After reading all these whines Jean-Jacques Annaud has decided to shoot “Whiners at the Gates”.
A story about people thinking that having an f1.4 lens makes them a better photographer.
I guess whiners will always be whiners, ever.
Sony just launched the professional grade mirrorless A7. And the a6000 got the fastest AF technology. Why they dont use it in A7..
this requires very fast full sensor read-outs, where larger and older sensor of A7 can’t do that fast
The A7 sensor is not old.its just been launched.. both camera has been around for at least 6 months for trial purposes by various photographer. I think they reserve the AF tech for the next upgrade for a7..pure marketing reason
It’s the D600/D800 sensor in A7/A7r. That’s also why A7r doesn’t have EFCS. And those sensors are not that new anymore by now.
I do not think D600 CMOS have build in PDAF sensor as A7 does.
No, but the A99 released around that time does have on sensor PDAF. That’s an older sensor than the new A6000 APS-C sensor and generally it’s easier to achieve fast read out with smaller sensors.
they’ll keep it for A9
How do Sony want to capture the users of low and mid-end DSLRs…when they will shy away due to poor OVF. Any photographer worth his salt would want a proper OVF/EVF.
By downgrading the EVF…Sony killed the low/mid DSLR users who could have adopted the A6000.
The high end DSLR users will not migrate to Sony as tele/portrait-lenses are not available and also the EVF is not close to the Pentaprism OVF’s.
……So long way to go Sony before they can expand their foothold amongst photgraphers and be a real player
so how many a6000 cameras have you tried out yet? none? oh okay.
Sony’s marketing strategy is flawed !!
Ideal way to introduce camera brand…is to launch a high end version first and then bring low end models…which will keep interest of budget minded people.
Here Sony actually upgraded the Nex 5 to A6000 (by giving slightly low end Nex 6 features and naming 6xxxx …but people feel they downgraded the Nex 6 or Nex 7)
Hence all the brick-bats to the marketing idiot at Sony.
Sony should be introducing the Nex 6/Nex 7 upgrade as A7000 🙂 🙂
News flash: there’s no brand being introduced, here. E-mount was introduced 4 years ago. ‘NEX’ was never intended to be a brand, it was just a model number. Alpha is – and was – the brand, as can be seen from the Alpha logo on all of these cameras, dating back to the original NEX-3 and NEX-5. Confusion over that is why they dropped the NEX from the model numbers.
wow, I just figured it have the ability to change focus speed on video mode, so the focus transitions are smooth like the canon 70d, that’s awesome.
agree that is a nice feature, I thought they would have demonstrated it in one of the first look videos.
Just added. Thanks Pew Pew!
With so many OSPDAF points, its a shame we can’t touch to focus in video mode.
Everywhere I hear, watch or read says it’s NEX-6’s successor, not NEX-7, which makes much more sense with the other rumor about another high-end E-mount camera, I wonder what can we really expect of a NEX-7 successor.
I hope it will be without touchscreen and will keep same design as Nex-7
Touchscreens can be disabled, but a notouchscreen can not be enabled. So touchscreen, please!
If price is taken into consideration I can’t find anything wrong with ths A6000.
Sony has another winner, that I do not doubt.
I am hoping an A7000 is around the corner that will include a better kit lens though.
It will be interesting to see the evf and focus. To see if its not not just marketing.
@admin add to the list, selective focus speed for smooth video transitions and steady shot for video.
This is the camera i’ve been waiting for to replace my nex 5n.
I can’t believe all the people complaining on here. This camera has enough features and tech to cater for 99.99% of the world.
The other 0.01% should buy an A7r or A6 😉
The A6000 has amazing technology for the price compared to Olympus and Fuji equivalents.
So what if the EVF has lower dots. I had the external EVF for the 5n and i’ve used it hardly ever because the LCD is good enough in sunny weather mode to use in the day. I also thought that the external 2.4m dot EVF had a poor refresh rate and colour so if the 1.4m dot one improves on that and the colour it will be an improvement. Even the Sony guy in the UTube thought it was an improvement.
Improving the AF and tracking was always the main issue with the Nex line. There is nothing worse than an out of focus shot of a once in a lifetime moment.
The only thing missing now from Sony is a decent lens roadmap as there are not any high quality zooms that are good enough for this sensor.
It’s great though that there are new FE lenses coming out that I could also use on the A6000, however the FF zooms are far too big and heavy.
… And they lived happily ever after.
Now bring us the a79 news 🙂
yeah, nice.
So, where are the a79 rumors andrea? 🙂
Does rear dial wheel still do nothing in A/S modes? Can I set one of the C buttons to one-click chang from MF to AF?
I am now sure that Sony will bring in the near futur a real NEX7 successor which will have an amazing EVF like the fuji XT1 (but as a rangefinder) and a touchscreen, a maximum shutter of 8.000, a electronic silent shutter mode and IBIS. This camera will be absolutely amazing. Please Sony, bring now a 85 f1.4 lens and a 16-140 hight quality zoom and than, you will be the best!
Will the PDAF work with Touit lenses?
Of course. Why wouldn’t it?
Because Touit lenses haven’t so far taken advantage of current NEX PDAF. Firmware upgrades have been rummoured to fix this for some time.
Ah. I figured that as long as a lens had autofocus electrics/mechanics, that the AF method implemented in the camera was irrelevant. As in, the lens projects an image onto the sensor, the processor figures out how to bring this image into focus, and the body sends the appropriate signal to the lens to do so. I wonder why lens-specific firmware is required.
It seems that there has to be a driver for each lens in the firmware in order to enable PDAF. To date, there have not been drivers for the Touit lenses in the Sony firmware. In 2012 even some of the Sony lenses couldn’t use PDAF.
Use the same sensor in RX10v2 with a 16-50mm F2.8 lens and I might buy.
Looks great! I already have an A7, but that AF speed, tracking and fps are really impressive. The ergonomics also look superior to the NEX6 with the recessed top-dial and hotshoe, as well as consolidation around the new Alpha menu system. I hope Sony do really well with this camera.
It is very clear that Sony tries to get more money from their customers- adding some key features in one camera, some other (different from the first) in the other camera, some good glass in A mount, some in E mount. Currently A mount lacks ANY good body, all are a bit out of date, A99 was out of date on the release date already. Same with A7/A7R, old sensors, as we see now, AF performance is out of competition, after few month cameras looks old in terms of AF. And I guess, it will be same story with A79 or what ever it will be in the end. Looks more and more that this is the last time to sell all Sony equipment and switch to something else, more stable, Sony is like young buy, while Canon/Nikon are adults!
Yes I think you should switch…you seem to have a problem with rapid advances in camera technology…. So yes Canon is probably the perfect choice for you….Nice and safe..You’ll be able to buy the same camera off them year after year.
roftl, best reply ever.
and be using the same sensor for the next 5 years!
You must be smoking some really good weed: who’s your pusher, I want some as well! LOL
“…A99 was out of date on the release date already…”, do you know what are you talking about?
If you think CaNikon are innovating then good luck with them: Nikon is innovating so much that has the D4 sensor (still really good I admit) in the DF.
Or maybe you’re talking about the auto oiling function of the D600? That was pure innovation… 😀
Yeah, the a77 is so out of date that the 70D barely managed to catch up two years later in terms of technology (and actually didn’t). Btw, the a7/r cannot be out of “competition”, because there isn’t one.
The NEX6/5R (and A99) already have the on-sensor PDAF sensors. At least that’s what Sony says. Anyway the NEX6/5R AF was never really faster than the CDAF AF Nexes. I wonder if Sony is able to (and if they will) finally speed up the NEX6/5R AF with a new firmware using the new algorithm of the A6000.
I would think the faster autofocus also requires the faster processor, so no, a Firmware upgrade will not get you there.
Ok so im just throwing it out their
A77 Replacment will be A7000 and it will be a hybrid Taking E and Alpha glass .
The patent we seen of A78 with nothing in the miorror box was actualy the A3000 and the Z Axis patent is the A7000 ….
The auto-focus improvements sound interesting, but, otherwise, not enough to entice me away from my NEX-7 and/or D600. It will be very interesting to see what the first serious tests and reviews have to say.
For many people this camera could be a real winner.
Check out the LCD screen at 0:37 in the video. It’s shooting 11fps continuous (not burst) with fast tracking, not just in the center of the view, and there is absolutely no moment of black between shots. What ever else it is or isn’t, this camera has beaten the mirror (SLT or SLR). This camera seems to be a definitive statement for mirrorless.
Next up on the big list: IBIS, and global shutter.
That isn’t tracking.
AlphaGuy, do you mean in the sense that the focus motions were small not large? So we don’t know if the lens could keep up with large motions at 11fps?
Good catch ….
NO IBIS…NO BUY!
Sony just doesnt seem to get it!
SONY SAYS SCREW YOU A MOUNT USERS NO IBIS go replace everything you own with our new slightly improved camera which we will convince you is revolutionary…until the nexy sligbtly improved revelutionary camera.
Just another 24mp exmor sensor despite all the hype.
Furthermore this super fast hybrid focus system probably only works with propriatary sony lenses…and then only the new proprietary sony lense so yo need to replace your old ones.
The camera is specially desighned to deliberately not focus as fast with any other lenses.
SO AS I PREDICTED SONY IS ALREADY SAYING SCRSW YOU NEX USERS TOO.
Thats why they changed the name so they can make the new faster AF not work with nex lenses.
Proponnent will argue you dont need stabilization and you dont need the new super fast focus..my answer is you dont need to rplace everything you own with another sony soon to be obsolete camera.
I usually don’t post stuff like this, but…
Shut up Barry…
The camera is awesome & the price is awesome. I just need to know the high ISO & AF performance in Low Light & AF Tracking in good light. If its all good, this will be my first E Mount Camera.
Moving from one of the most frustrating AF systems to the worlds fastest is revolutionary in my book.
Set down the crackpipe, please.
The new dual focus faster focus system will only work with new proprietary sony lenses..all other lenses will focus slower..
Sony can only compete using unfair trade practices like these.
Sony proprietary Bluray only beat HD DVD because Sony Pictures put out Blueray movies only.
Sony has always used tactics like this.
The dual focu on A mount only works with a few new A mount sony and Ziess lenses..no old A mount lenses and no 3rd party lenses.
Sony can not make lenses that are competitive enough to sell on thier own so must use unfair trade tactics to make people buy them.
The first Sony cameras would only use prprietary Sony memory sticks!
If Sony were a US company they would not be able to do many of the things they are doing.
LOL at Toe.
Baz, Sony has never said IBIS will come, and you know what? It probably never will. Ranting about it in upper-case will not make it any more likely and simply makes you look like a ranting lunatic.
What sensor hype are you referring to? Were you seriously expecting anything more than 24mp Exmor at this stage? If you believed the Exmor R rumour then you’re more stupid than we all thought.
After consulting with sony I am revising part of my statment
Dual autofocus will work with all native E mount lenses ONLY
It will not work with any other lens that uses a converter.
Apparently Sony is not yet ready to screw E mount users just everyone else.
Dont worry though..your time will come NEXt.
please enlighten us and tell us what mirrorless apc-s cameras have ibis so we all can buy it. oh wait… there isn’t any.
Baz, are you mental?
Have you considered that A-mount lenses without the stepper motors that are installed in e-mount lenses are just not capable of functioning with the current technology?
NO A MOUNT LENSES WORK WITH THE NEW DUAL AL NOT EVEN THOSE WITH STEPPER MOTORS.
Aren’t the AF-d compatible A-mount lenses compatible with dual AF ?
“What ever else it is or isn’t, this camera has beaten the mirror (SLT or SLR)” – you are comparing 3-year old SLT technology to the latest mirrorless tech. Wait for the new Alpha to come out, I’m sure your statement won’t hold true.
Nice camera. The Autofocus looks encouraging. Hope they put it in an A8 style camera shortly.
Have to say though.. the Parrot stole the show…
Why do most people here compare A6000 against Fuji? Why not compare with m4/3 like E-M1 or E-M10?
Different sensor size.
Most here speaking about Fuji are trolls. You can see this by the fact that they are comparing this camera to the X-T1 for some reason, when it is priced much closer to the X-M1.
I wouldn’t call them trolls. For some strange reason a troll is having fun disturbing exchange of opinions.
I’d call this a united effort, probably set up by competitors.
FUD-alert! would be the answer to that.
Fair enough. Let’s go with that 🙂
I don’t think you need to be a troll to appreciate Fuji camera’s.
They are the best looking camera’s out there imo.
Also the X-T1 looks amazing, the only 3 things I can criticise about it are it’s APSC sized sensor (not 35mm), it’s lack of well spaced PDAF points (and fast way to select them), as well as no IBIS. Other than that it’s clearly awesome.
The tech in this A6000 looks interesting. The camera doesn’t tbh because entry or mid range gear doesn’t excite me. Share some of this tech (focusing) with an A7r type model and I’ll suddenly become very interested.
The biggest area that let’s Sony down is it’s (full frame E) lenses. As the Admin first commented, Sony should have released 35 F1.4 50 F1.5 85 F1.4 from the start. Because they haven’t, Fuji now offer a better/cheaper package. The Sony ‘system’ has all the potential, but it needs to add high performance focusing to it’s bodies, and fast lenses as already mentioned. The biggest let off for Sony imo, is Fuji stated they are not going FF anytime soon. The the X series was FF, Sony wouldn’t get a look in, similar to the DSLR market. Sony needs to understand, if it wants to earn money, it needs to be market leader producing the BEST equipment. If it doesn’t realise this, it won’t be long before the imaging devision is sold off along wit the TV & PC devision.
Samsung will easily be able to take on Sony’s sensor business, and it has both the technology, products and resources to crush Sony. Sony are seriously lucky Apple fell out with Samsung, or it could already be in trouble, as it would just be left with camera’s that have minuscule sales.
The biggest problem for Sony imo is they have said they will listen to their customers. Frankly though I think listening to Sony’s customers will cause them serious issues. You see the mass market has avoided Sony. It’s actually these people Sony should be asking what they want. For example: I’ve heard allot of people here say Sony’s DSLR’s look aesthetically pleasing. If Sony actually believe them, it will harm their business. Just about everyone I know thinks Sony DSLR’s are just the ugliest camera’s.
Sony had a few knockouts though with the RX1, RX100 and less so with the A7 (although it looked pretty good).
Actually, it makes a lot of sense to compare the a6000 to the Fuji X-T1.
The Fuji X-T1 ain’t cheap but Fuji generated excitement which makes it a hot preorder seller on Amazon’s sales charts. Sony needs to compete with it and the a6000 is allegedly slated as a NEX-7 replacement which is priced in the X-T1’s ballpark. One big selling point of the Fuji is really fast AF so Sony needed to respond to that in the a6000 if, indeed, it ends up the flagship cropped mirrorless body in their line-up.
I suspect Sony will have to respond to other features in the Fuji X-T1 that SAR users seem to want like quality weather sealing and we’ll see an a7000 (or whatever) eventually get released. Rumors of a FF NEX-7 replacement popped up on SAR after people complained which makes me doubt it really was planned that way but just a way for Sony to quiet complainers. If enough users demand a real NEX-7 replacement I’m sure Sony will eventually build it.
The A6000 is not the NEX 7 replacement. Sony has clearly stated that on several occasions.
Could you point to one, online, say via a “hyperlink”.
Looks really good for the price. A little bit concerned about the position of the rear dial so close to the corner. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s kitted with that aweful motorzoom 16-50… Too bad the 18-55 is not available in black outside of the NEX-7 kit. This might just be the replacement for my D7000 that I have been waiting for.
You can buy a brand-new SEL1855 in black from a number of different eBay sellers; it goes for about $130.
Cheers!
Almost perfect, but without plug for external mic :((
Why?
Why? did you see the price? It is just $800. The original Nex 6 was more expensive at launc, did not have mic in either. The A6000 is in many ways the (much) better camera then the Nex 6 I think (faster AF, more pixels on sensor, magnesium alloy body, PC connect.
And you can use the hotshoe to connect a external mic.
650$. 800$ with the kit lens.
a55 was also around 800 at launch and has microphone input.
not sure what did you mean with hot shoe – it will not let me write sound track.
I want to record video, but sound from build-in microton is crap compare to any fare good mic like ‘videomic’
Without mic input the video functionality gives no points, but pain.
You can use the multi interface shoe to plug in a microphone or the Sony Xlr adapter.
Yup, adapter, with same price as this camera. 😉
Well, there are at least two other mic options by Sony for the MIS and they are economical.
The XLR kit is expensive but it is also pretty great – it comes with a good microphone, has two XLR ports with auto or manual level/gain controls and it supplies phantom power to microphones feeding directly off the camera keeping the kit light.
What are the economical options?
I pass.
Continue with my nex until something with better video oriented capabilities arrive.
agree
If the af is good as they say, probably the new A mount cameras will loose the translucent mirror, and no more light lost, yay
+1
Not with A-mount lenses it won’t be.
Of course not. Mirrorless AF is ages away from DLSR AF.
When they say ‘world’s fastest AF’, they mean ‘fastest mirrorless AF’.
I think it’s nice that you try and explain what Sony means without being Sony. Here is what Sony wrote on their blog announcing the camera, so we don’t have to try and guess their thinking: “Even quicker than most professional DSLRs, the phenomenal autofocus speed of the α6000 camera is powered by Sony’s advanced Hybrid AF system.”
Statements like that are meaningless. Under what conditions? With what settings? With what lenses? etc.
It’s marketing nonsense.
Sure, but the statement I responded to was about what Sony meant and I posted their exact words. They aren’t claiming just mirrorless. I agree that it could just be marketing and all that jazz, but you’re moving the goalposts. ;~)
P.S. This video with the Sony Zeiss 24 and A6000 is encouraging: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2f9ue2FJB4
“Under what conditions? With what settings?”
ALL conditions, ALL settings. A-mount is DOOOOOMED!!! Muahhahahaha!!
Sony Poland make what they mean about fastest AF totally clear:
0.06s – Worlds fastest Auto focus*
* Amongst interchangeable-lens digital cameras equipped with an APS-C image sensor as of Feb 12 2014. Measured using CIPA internal measurement method with E PZ 16-50 f3.5-5.6 OSS les mounted. Pre-AF off and viewfinder in use.
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2f9ue2FJB4 (its at 0.17″).
I’m not sure why anyone cares if a-mounts have a mirror in them. The performance is what counts. If Sony can make a better performing a-mount body without a mirror I’m all for it.
I have no interest in e-mounts primarily because my experience with NEX bodies is their ergonomics suck. Lack of IBIS is a huge problem for me switching over, too. Sure, I can waste a lot of money rebuilding a new replacement lens system with OSS but my experience with Sony glass – and I own a bit of it – is it lacks the special color characteristics of old, classic Minolta glass which I prefer to use.
Sony needs to knuckle down and just make decent a-mount bodies. NEX fans might never get it but switching over really doesn’t work for many of us. I’ve tested them a bit but Sony ILCE bodes just don’t work for me. Given how few I see in the wild here (like almost zippo) compared to DSLRs I don’t think I’m alone.
I live in Paris and I see a lot of tourist with Nex Camera. Most of is the NEX 3 around the neck of young asian girl.
My Fuji X-E2 AF fails miserably in dim light. Hope this wont be a case on A6000
Really? that was the reason I sold my X-E1. The AF in low light sucked compared to my nex-6 and I was going to get the X-e2 instead but then got a deal on the A7 and sold them both. I like the X-t1. I think I will buy one at a store that takes returns and mess with it for a week or two.
Yes, just test it. I use it indor the af miss alot on my child or in dark area. But outdoor af performance is wheezy breezy.
Is the camera weather sealed???
Nope… Its not weather sealed.
Nice camera overall.
If the lower resolution EVF is actually better, then why did they go with the higher resolution in the first place?! Doesn’t Sony do any research? There are probably other factors that makes the lower resolution EVF perform better but that should be given with a new generation and they should have been able to improve the performance while keeping (or improving!) the resolution. That’s how technology usually works. Why Sony always does this? How much they saved in costs by downgrading the EVF? Is it worth getting it mentioned in every review about this camera?
Any word on pricing in Australia. I heard a nasty rumor that it will be selling for $1200.
So, this *can’t* be their top-end APS-C E-mount camera.
Why would they hold back on:
– The EVF
– No leading video credentials (60p is nice enough, but so last year. Where’s All-I? 4K?)
– No serious audio credentials (lacking mic and headphone sockets)
And yet we are told there will be no Nex7 replacement. So what does Sony have in store for high-end APS-C E-mounts?
I’m starting to wonder if they want to place a Camera priced above NEX-7. Marketing-wise that would be a reason to call a6000 a NEX6&7 successor. Otherwise I don’t understand which part of Nex-7 is in the a6000.
The 24.3 Mp Sensor
Yes, it looks like they are leaving some space for something above.
I’m hoping for an XT1 contender top APSC model in the shape of the A7 as I’ve grown to really like the looks over time and love the level of physcial controls. While I’m not particularly in the market for a FF model, I think a 16mp FF model slotted below the A7 would make an interesting proposition as a low light monster, should the A6000 remain as the top end APSC model.
this a rumour site, not everything quote here are real facts and Andrea’s statement that Alpha6000 will replace NEX6 AND 7 is obviously wrong, misleaded by a source.
In the Signal Sony video,Kenta the rep from Sony stated that the camera will replace the NEX6 and never mention the NEX7.
So the assumption of high an end APS-C camera in the price range of the NEX 7 is a good one.
Andrea already talk about a camera with a kind of Tri-navi system re-use, so…
Anyway, it’s nice to see that the NEX 6 replacment is way better than the NEX 7 for 650€, and for those waiting for the real new NEX 7 it give high hope for the unannouced one.
…the bird was interesting, not the camera.
And did Sony management mix NFC for GPS?
NFC is a joke but GPS would actually be useful.
If it’s about getting the price down to 650, then they could release another version called A6000G including GPS costing 655. Stupid Sony.
Those people complaining about the lack of touchscreen:
Many of us use a viewfinder with the correct eye rather than the right eye. will any touchscreen be able to differentiate between a finger and the end of a nose?
If your eye is on the viewfinder, the touchscreen will be disabled. You can even disable/lock the touchscreen using a dedicated button like on cell phones. Its not hard if you want to do it you know.
Just to add. Touchscreen is especially useful for Touch to Focus in Video mode. You are very unlikely to be using the view finder for video.
Infact, Touch to Focus in Video mode is the only reason I would want a touchscreen in the first place.
But what if my eyebrows are really bushy and I can’t get my eye close enough to make the eye sensor work??
Maybe I should stick with my mobile (we don’t call them cell phones on the civilised side of the atlantic 😉 ) instead?
🙂 🙂
Sony could simply add a menu setting > Touchscreen > ON/OFF.
Problem solved.
Most, if not all touchscreen cameras have the option to disable the touchscreen, but it is not possible to turn on touchscreen capabilities on cameras that do not have a touchscreen. Also proximity sensors have been used in cell phones and cameras for a long time to determine when the device should ignore touchscreen inputs. With app capable cameras and the ability to intuitively and quickly select your focus points why would this not be a good option to have? It just does not make sense to not offer a simple touch interface this day in age. I’m guessing if they are going to follow the same design philosophy as the NEX6 -> a6000 no touchscreen, then the same will apply for the NEX7 replacement sadly.
You don’t like touch screen, fine. No problem, the A6000 is just for you, as the Nex 7 and 6 was. Right now from Sony for APS-C there is the Nex 5T. Is it still sold? Looks like, but isn’t the A5000, without touchscreen, replacing it? So will the A7000 have both and EVF and a touchscreen? Dunno, but I am curious what role Sony sees for the touch screen in the future. Personally I upgraded my Nex 5 to the 5R for the touchscreen, instead to the 6. I would like both an EVF and a touch screen, but if I have to choose, I prefer the later one. Looks like soon there will not be any option. Tiltable screen is fine (actually a must), but touch screen is really great for manual focussing.
Put the cam in a smartphone and all is good… Especially the Autofocus!
Anyone recognize the brand/model tripod used in the a600 Review YouTube Video ?
Where is the AF/MF button?
And this is just me, but the NEX cameras are at the edge of comfort as they are. Placing the only functional wheel all the way in the corner (where my thumb naturally isn’t) means some long days and cramps.
I pray they replace the NEX 7 and just mend the problems it had.
Now that the joke is over, down to business, Alpha A-MOUNT camera, please.
Yes please!
This a6000 is a replacement of the NEX5 and NEX 6.
Here the e mount line up
A3000<A5000<A6000<A7000???<A7<A7R<A9???
This looks like a decent upgrade to the NEX6. Looking at the current product line, it looks like there is room for a high end APS-C AND a low end full frame E mount camera. Sony will probably shift the A7 and A7R down a notch and put a higher end full frame. My guess is that both the higher end APS-C and higher end full frame will support SAVCS-S recording (up to 4k).
The A6000, at its slated price, is a darn good camera (specwise). Let’s see how it performs.
I doubt you’ll see both a low-end FF and a higher-end APS-C. I think FF will become their next step up from the a6000.
There is too much of a price gap between the A6000 and A7. For my needs, an APS-C E mount with 4k video would be a great filler.
I meant that the camera that sits between the a6000 and the A7 will probably be a NEX-7-style FF, rather than another APS-C.
I hope soon we’ll see a whether sealed nex-7-like high end aps c. but I’m afraid they will make it FF.
Sony probably needs an even faster Processor (Bionz X2) to get 4K recordings out of the larger sensors. I don’t think they want to hobble a great camera with a slow processor (A99).
Looks like Sony came through in the end with the a6000. Despite the typical Sony ambiguous leak drama leading me to think it was going to fall short, they appear to have delivered. The price point makes a lot of sense in a lousy world economy. NEX fans here generally seem pleased with the new body (not my cup of tea at all but we all have our druthers). It should sell well.
Makes me wonder about the a7/a7R AF systems. They’re way too new for a refresh and the a6000 appears to leave its much more expensive big brother FFs in the dust in this respect.
Oh well, the good news for me is Sony has mostly gotten the e-mount releases out of their system. Lets see if they can do something smart with a-mounts. With the ambiguous, conflicting rumors anything can happen even though my latest sense for their plans of pushing the low volume expensive high-end isn’t encouraging at all.
OK, now that E-Mount users are happy, let’s see if Sony releases a badass pro-grade A-Mount camera like 1DX and D4, with real cool AF and stuff.
don’t know about a camera that can compete with the 1DX and D4, but the 4K prototype and the probably definitive product that will be show at NAB is aiming at the Canon 1DC.
So if they strip the 4K stuff and PZ mount They could probably derivated an A-mount pro body from it.
WESTING TIMES
NO STABILISER AT SENSOR OR BODY, I DONT NEED IT. WHAT THE DIFFRENT ? FAST AUTO FOCUS WHAT FOR?, FOR CAPTURE ALIEN ? WESTING TIMES
the preliminary videos of a6k AF in action seem pretty impressive:
– the AF seems to work well on a6k+16-50PZ – but… WHICH other E-mount lenses (SEL, but also FF for FF) support the OSPDAF this fast in practice?
– esp. in longer FLs range?
– as demonstrated, this order of AF speed makes both LA-EA1/3 as well as LA-EA2/4 obsolete (the latter together with all the rest of the SLT technology) – will there be LA-EAx adapters opening/enabling the use of suitably fast A-mount lenses on the a6k and alike bodies?
– this question is of course more interesting for SSM type of A-mount glass than for screw-driven ones. as they are inherently slower;
– how probable this might be, and if probable, then HOW SOON?
– what is the buffer depth on a6k for RAW files (the specs do not list this info)?
– how many such RAWs can be recorded at 11 fps before the buffer fills up, and there will be inevitable slow down??
– can a6k hold at least 2-3 seconds worth of RAWs at 11fps?
– are the a6k RAWs of approx. the same size as from N7 (which means with no lossy compression, like those from A7s cams)?
– as there is no AEL/AFL – AF/MF switch on the back of a6k;
– IS THERE any other way on N6 type bodies – to take-off AF from half-press of the shutter, and assign it to some other location at the back of a6k??
just some impromptu questions from a top of the head, but perhaps there are lots more of unknowns (easier to ask/answer by the current N6 owners, than for N7 ones = mine familiarity with N6 is rather limited at best)
qm
Those are great questions.
“Engineers from Sony also revealed to AP that they have begun using a new undisclosed material in their colour filter array, which they say has increased the signal response by 20%, the accuracy of the A6000’s colour reproduction appears to be improved as a result.”
This could be interesting, if true.
Maybe that undisclosed material is ground up pieces from all the new A mount stuff that people are complaining about not getting?
Yeah, that’s funny
We need more info on that, wider band? Narrower Band?
It’s blue filter.
Welcome to SAR, Sony Alpha Rants! 😀
To me, is a great camera for the price!
It would be much more meaningful to show the autofocus speed with birding, e.g. 55-210 or even A-mount lens xD
Good luck birding with 210 on the long end. I’m pondering upgrading my Tamron 200-500mm to a 150-600mm just for this use case. 😉
Yet another world’s fastest autofocus camera, following prior such recent claims as the Fuji X-E2 and Fuji Xt1 and Olympus EM-1, all quickly followed by disclaimers and explanations and excuses. And still none as fast as the elderly Nikon V1, which interestingly made know such grandiose claims.
But the big thing here is the price. Sony is clearly getting it. The future of interchangeable lens cameras is not on miniscule feature differences or merely cosmetic changes. It’s not on some silly corporate mission statement that we will pursue only high end premium (high-margin) cameras… as though every manufacturer is not already trying to do the exact same thing. And the market for such high end mass produced consumer luxury cameras is quite limited, and likely saturated.
Congrats to Sony for realizing this. This low price is a shot across the bows of the other mirrorless vendors. Look out below as the price wars heat up.
In my European country Sony cameras, in general, are cheaper than other brands already.
This A6000 can only make it better.
Fuji e.g. is hard to find and much more expensive.
The AF capabilities of the A6000 will close the gap with DSLRs.
If they put the A6000 tech in the A7000 and add a 4MP EVF, 1/8000 shutter etc. is may become the ultimate mirrorless and improve on many DSLR shortcomings too !
Way to go Sony.
The world’s fastest autofocus camera? What a novel slogan, this is something for Vlad and the other geeks.
Yup…Sony realizes now and make cheaper cameras to compete…But how about lenses??
all zeiss lenses only have descent image and build quality but very expensive…we want cheaper lenses but with comparable quality…like sel50 1.8, for us people in budget, we want more that kind of lenses…release3X!!! more lenses…
If every camera that claimed to have the world’s fastest auto-focus actually did, the cameras would anticipate what we want to focus on and have it all ready for us before we ever even put our eye to the viewfinder 😉
this how Nikon advertise their 1 series on TV in France. The camera that take picture before you think of it.
official announced, isn’t that the same as paper released.
Official Release Date: April 20, 2014.
Im guessing that A6000 be the Nex5 replacement…
looking forward to Nex6 and Nex7 — A7000 and A8000 :)=
The AF improvements are encouraging, hopefully Sony is taking AF seriously. The 92% coverage is great. This AF and speed in the a77 successor would make for a very nice sports / action camera.
Here’s my take on this…
Good:
– 24 MP is good
– based on samples I’ve seen, noise and detail look better by at least a stop
– body looks more metallic, nice
– AF looks amazing, a properly big jump
Bad:
– should be smaller and lighter, it’s just not right that it’s the same size as the A7/A7r without hump
– EVF has less resolution and size? WTF? Why does Sony sometimes take baffling steps backwards? (the resistive touchscreen of the NEX-5R vs 5N comes to mind)
– Should have two dials, like the NEX-7’s tri-navi
– The Fn button was fine on the NEX-6, why put a custom function button there?
– SD card slot should be where it is on the A7/A7r
Does anyone know if the circular selector button thing can be assigned a function like ISO? I remember being able to do this on the 5N, but can’t on my 6.
who said it is the same size as A7? It is the same as NEX-6 except slightly thicker, but smaller than A7.
Look at it yourself at the 2:00 mark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6N2KQ26fd4
And read, I said it’s the same size without hump.
650 is dirt cheap. Dirt cheap.
E-Mount Sony philososphy: Give em away.
A-Mount Sony philosophy: Charge them up the ass.
what about the lame auto focus on the recent a7 models? what is it now, a new camera for every fix ?
If you want me to compare to the next SLT to come out, then I think I must be comparing to, at worst, 1 year old SLR and SLT technology. But even if mirror less trades back and forth with SLT, that’s a new threshold that mirror less never reached before.

“the camera focuses slightly faster than the previous NEX 6 but it isn’t anything with blazing speed” mhhhhmmmmmmmmmm???? hope it´s more than advertisement, Sony!
As far as I can tell, Sony is phasing out the NEX designs that allow the use of an LCD hood. That’s a shame.
One of the websites said that the burst rate in raw setting is 21 images before buffering and 49 i think at the Fine jpeg setting. they also said its drops down to 1-2 frames per second after that.
So serious question here (i’m relatively new to photography, so if it’s obvious, be nice.) I haven’t really seen this addressed directly in these threads…
While everyone seem in agreement that this is an upgrade to the Nex 6, and NOT a Nex 7 successor, how is the a6000 necessarily crippled or worse than the 7? (Disclosure: i use the 7.) I haven’t read all reviews and/or specs yet, but from what i can tell, it’s pretty close in features, other than tri-navi (which i know is a big one.) Am i missing some key points and features that it lacks?
Does anyone know if this camera will have a way to use back button AF by either reassigning the AEL button or using one of the custom buttons? On the NEX-7, I use back button AF by setting the AF/MF button to “hold” and then putting the camera in MF and holding down the AF/MF button when I want focus. Besides the normal advantages of back button focus, this also means the camera is not trying to prefocus all the time and focus stays locked in.
Either way, while I will miss the tri-navi, I am very excited about the much improved AF speed.
Yep. It’s all there.
hehe. necro-posting is fun. 🙂
Could this be the ultimate sports camera? Yes! However, where is the 70-200 f2.8 compatible with this super AF for sports? There is none! Where is the 150-600 type compatible with this super AF for wildlife? There is none! Where is the 16-50 f2.8 compatible with this super AF for weddings? There is none! That’s a big problem. Sony wants you to buy this A6000 and play with the slow lenses now, then in 2015 they will release a6500/a7000 with even better AF and f2.8 zooms… for you to buy them at one time!
