Gariz launched an extremely gorgeous Alcantara version of their A7II case. You can already buy it here:
On eBay  in [shoplink 36899 ebay]Black (Click here)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 36900 ebay]Red (Click here)[/shoplink].
On Amazon US in Black (Click here) and Red (Click here).

Alcantara is not leather and has the following advantages:
– It feels like leather but it is not.
– Increased durability and stain resistance over leather
– It doesn’t make you sweat.
– It’s flame retardant in case your camera gets launched in an open fire 🙂

P:S.: Alcantara is composed of about 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane and is very much used in Sports cars because it feels good but you don’t sweat in it.

    1. Some protection. Some cameras like the RX1 also benefit from a bit more depth in the grip, since the camera is too small. For some people, half cases are also a fashion accessory.

Half cases have been in the industry for years, it’s just that today’s society seems to like accessories more than previous generations so there are more businesses making them

and Asian businesses also reach Western markets easier today so their proliferation is much higher.

  1. That’s why the A7 line is only a walk around camera . It’s to show how gorgous it fits with the new shoes. It’ s so trendy isn’t it! 😮

    1. it´s actually a sad joke…. i can only laugh when i see people that use such cases.

  2. Gariz is a solid manufacturer. Their leather may not be amazing, but it is good.
I’ve owned 3 of their cases for 3 different cameras and I can vouch for them and the fact that they were the first I’ve known to kick start the trend of the hole at the bottom of the case to access the battery and card doors. Fuji later copied this along with other minor manufacturers.

Now, for real choice of real leather, I’ve always wanted but could never afford a JnK case. Because they can use bridle (among others) leather, I can say I would expect those cases to be well fit for decades. Google bridle leather and you will understand. Sadly enough, their cases do not have an access hole for the battery and card door, so they are more accessory than utilitarian, but they are gorgeous.

All else is kind of…meh…especially some Italian guy that makes half cases for Leica. I’ve seen their cases in person. Their cut doesn’t seem to be as refined and the workmanship kind of felt like it was a step or two down from Gariz (which is cheaper) so I would advise against that if anyone thinks of getting a leather case for their cam.

There is also a Japanese manufacturer of leather half cases (they did one for the RX1 with a built in grip) but I haven’t seen them in person. From the pictures, though, they look like they know how to cut well. I can’t tell anything about the leather because I’ve only seen pictures.

  3. My Gariz case and sling strap are the ONLY things that make my a7II worth using.

No kidding. At least the camera gets a little size, close to a77, and doesn’t fall into my palm so deep. The bottom of case matches height of LA-EA3 tripod socket, so it’s all very level and formed nicely. The sling straps are amazing. But I use it on my a99 more than a7II with case.

That Gariz is some nice kit. Beware of imitations.

  4. Agree that Gariz cases are the best.
    however:
-It made more sense on A7 as grip became better (not needed asmuch on A7II)
-leather look seems nicer, this new one made from polymere’s =still plastic and same price!

  5. Yes, I would need some new bright red Italian shoes to go with this accessory. It would make me the dandiest photog on the block!

All I see is added bulk and another item to remove sometime. It would be super cool if Sony made this covering a feature of their very expensive cameras.

  6. Sony users got money to blow, deal with it. That been said these cases are ugly on cameras with grip. Adds nothing but bulk.

  7. Latest release of L-bracket fits like a glove, tripod mount ready, extra grip and provides better protection for 30 bucks.

  8. I want something like those lens wraps for large lenses. Make it extremely low profile as to not disrupted the ergonomics in any way. The idea is to leave it on the camera at all times without killng the user experience. This is close.
