The RX1 specs, price and preorders are available at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, Wex UK ,Wex Germany.
Amateur Photographer published an interview with Fuji and they strongly talk about the Full Frame mirrorless camera future. For Fuji it’s clear that there is a demand for full-frame mirrorless cameras. And when asked about the Sony RX1 Fuji’s X-series designer, Masazumi Imai, told AP: ‘I think many customers want a bigger sensor with first rate design. Sony’s answer is the RX1. Of course, I like that kind of camera but it is completely different to our series because the design is too modern.‘
In short, Fuji says there is a market for Full Frame compact cameras although it looks like they want to have such a camera with interchangeable mount. Sony really should hurry to deliver us the NEX-9 FF as soon as possible otherwise Fuji may will steal us the show. P.S.: I consider the new Leica M (Click here to see specs) and Leica ME camera too expensive and feature wise not on top of the market. They are playing in another league.
P.S.: Dearsusans wrote a nice article writing the PRO and CONS of the RX1. Check it out!

I think it’s good for Fuji to pursue a FF ILC. Competition could help push Sony to produce a fuller FF NEX solution and not run away too far with price.
I will be the first to buy one!
We need a mirrorless A mount full frame camera.
Why do you want a FF A-Mount mirrorless? That doesn’t make sense. Explain yourself.
Because it can have in-camera stabilization, for now. Eventually there will be no-need for SLT (when focussing improves), so there could be multiple reasons THEN.
also, the form-factor of a full sized dslr is inevitable especially for professionals like wedding photogs. a beefy hand grip and a body that can withstand long tele lenses like the 70-200. not to mention bigger batteries and an additional vgrip.
It makes perfect sense. If they master the focus without the use of the SLT it would be an ideal camera. The concern of lens size that covers FF is gone with the alpha mount. It is already being done. IBIS and so far better navigating with the DSLT v nex.
Why should him explain himself? Btw, A-mount prime lenses are not big and be easily used in a mirroless body. Only the zooms are bigger
Why should they make a complete e-mount ff lineup from scratch when they’ve got tons of users and a-mount full frame lenses out there?
You can just rip out the mirror in the a99.
Or you can wait for a FF NEX and put on an adapter. No matter what, you need the a longer flange focal distance for A-mount lenses.
I’d buy it before rx1. Fujifilm is a real photography equipment company – they get it unlike Sony. They get that lenses are equally if not more important than bodies. Good glass comes first and they showed an appreciation for this approach with their latest x 1 pro.
Yeah, you would think Fuji “get’s it” but the reality is they don’t. They put out great hardware that appeals to those of us with a photographic background but the firmware is so riddled with bugs and quirks that it feels more like an electronic gadget than the NEX.
And then, when they put out a firmware update that improves 3 of the 30 outstanding items, their user base praises them for being supportive.
Um, why not just put out an interface that works in the first place. After the train wreck of X100 v1.0 and the subsequent year of slow improvements you would think Fuji would have a released a polished product with the XPro-1, nope.
The XE is their last chance with me to prove they can put together a camera that just works as it should, right out of the box – something I think the NEX excels at.
Whoever says that the current Fuji lenses are good certainly hasn’t used good glass before. They are certainly good in the center, but the corners are rubbish even stopping down to f/8. Now, all those “good” glass are ruined by the foliage problem…
i have and i say that fuji glass is good – open for conversation – keep in mind price range in which fuji’s lenses are
RX-1 is very special with no competition whatsoever. No other manufacturer will dare to tread this space. RX-1 will be SOLD OUT everywhere for a long time. Good luck finding one. Good job SONY!
The only way I see a Sony NEX with FF sensor in the market is with high intruction price between 2500 and 3000, bigger camera size overall, and if people want FF lenses as small as current APS-C designs is by paying premium price just like people pays for Leica lenses.
If people complained about the a99 price, they will complain about NEX-9 price too for sure.
Admin, please take this post down. We have no room here for rasist comments. Calling a nation “monkeys”…we don’t need it on SAR
Agreed. This man is around here to delivery denigrating and racist comments. He should be banned and this post deleted. This way he can find someone else’s testicles to scratch because clearly he has none.
Don’t worry about him.
The best part of him ran down his uncle-brothers leg.
agree!
I thought racism ended back in the 60s.. Guess some people still lived in the past.
Have you seen the difference between qualities of electronics produced in America, Europe, Japan, and China?
Do you realize that America and Europe is swamped with economic issues?
Stop clinging to dreams and face reality.. Just because another company do well, doesn’t mean you have to insult the country..
Nyahaha… Steal ideas… Hypocrites..
…. What does a blind person do on a photo-site …. ?

Racism no more ended in the 1960’s did than the threat of war. As inane as it is, it is built into education, politics, the workplace, etc. Come to Asia and see just how ugly it can be and here, we are in a much better place than some nations are.
If you are in Japan and not Japanese, but from another Asian nation, you will be forced into remedial jobs, talked down to, laughed at, ridiculed, and in extreme cases, run out of the country (during protests). Koreans who are born here don’t get citizenship. Neither do their kids, nor their kids’ kids.
Racism isn’t going anywhere, it’s just being pasted over.
Saying it ‘ended’ in the 1960’s shows a narrow world view unfortunately. The USA didn’t radically become non-racist in the 1960’s. Unfortunately, it is rife with racism. There are many many evidences of this: Katrina, the law vs. visible minorities, ostracism at school, workplace, etc.
Ideally, racism has been curtailed through changes in education, but its direct implementation has merely taken different shapes.
I wasn’t expecting an educated answer to my comment..
Kudos to the serious and educated answer. I guess there’s a number out there that has taken off their blindfolds..
We need someone with an assortment of M mount lenses (Voigtlander, Zeiss or Leica) taking some shots with the VG900 and then we’ll know how a FF NEX will fare with glass that E mount doesn’t have. Without the help of the A mount adapter there is no native solution so its all left to adapters and, to follow up on mirrorless advantages in design, M mount lenses are where its at.
Pointless. M-mount wides won’t work well anyway. And I don’t think japanese are able to catch this small belgian company in 5 years.
Facts only, you stupid 😉
Japanese cannot develop even APS-C sized sensor that works well with these wides 😉
The RX1 is innovative. I think that’s fairly well established. It’ll be interesting to see the responses of other manufacturers.
Being able to handle high incidence, is just as much advantage to native lens design, and small form factor, as it is for adapting m-mount.
Experimenting with the vg900 will show where Sony currently stands, and is more useful than wild speculation. Sony already make the 5n, Ricoh GXR, xpro( different Cfa) sensors successfully for apsc. They know the engineering issues involved.
You missed something. Because I have noticeable smearing with my 5n and SE 18/3.8 ASPH, Ricoh GXR uses old tech with aligned microlenses, what prevents it from performing well with telephoto and xpro + their sh1tty CFA just works BAD with RF WA: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12196364/17.jpg
That image has some very awful corners. But I really wonder if there isn’t something else involved. Field curvature with the lens explaining the oof corners.
Mr. Imai talks refreshingly no-nonsense and open about these things.
Nice move Fuji!! I’ll be watching, and don’t go using that Sony sensor now 😉
Jay
The RX1 is incredibly small! I saw it at photokina today. But Sony just shows it inside a box, you couldn’t try it…
CMOSIS is the only manufacturer that will do production runs of less than 10 thousand
LMAO
You don’t get it. Even APS-C sensor from 5N has more problems with old RF optics than this new from leica.
Thanks for the news flash.
;-)~
“the covering circle of Fuji’s current X-series lenses is large enough to accommodate full frame. The problem is that current wide angle lenses would not cover the full FF area.”
My concern is the coverage of the lenses. X series is designed with APS-C coverage in mind so I would assume that the edge performance will be compromised. Is it possible for Fuji to come up with FF lenses in X mount?
Another issue I have with FF mirrorless is size. Current technology does not allow compact FF lenses (angle of light detection issue with photovoltaic sensors). The end-result is a very unbalanced camera+lens combo. Wouldn’t it be better to try to design a more compact/ergonomic body than attaching bazookas to thin pieces of metal? The NEX and XPro cameras just don’t feel right in hand when a large lens is attached to them. I know it will look ridiculous if they choose to enlarge the grip on for example NEX bodies if the same thin metal box design concept remains unchanged. Well, now is the time to make that change if FF mirrorless is where they are headed next.
With a symmetrical lens design, image circle is a function of focal length. Retrofocus and telephoto lenses are a bit different, mind you.
Take the Sony 85/2.8, I get the impression that lens was never intended to cover full frame as an easy choice lens, yet because of its focal length it does so with aplomb.
I don’t think Fuji need to have a full set of lenses that cover FF as Sony won’t have one either. Fuji have shown themselves to be much more dexterous than Sony when it comes to producing lenses, so if they have two or three good ones that work from day zero, and add a couple more specialty FF wides (which will probably sell to APS users, too, as their current wide lenses don’t match the performance of their longer lenses) they’d have a good enough system for many of us. If the 23/1.4, 35/1.4 and 56/1.4 all happen to cover full frame, then that’s a good enough setup for street photography right there.
I agree, it is the WA lenses that have the most concern. If they can come up with a couple WA and UWA FF solutions, it should be sufficient.
However, the size of these lenses will still be a matching problem for any of the mirrorless FF body in the future.
No racism or insulting here, please.
Anyway, I think Fuji is on the right track with their lenses, but I don’t care for their retro 20th century style camera’s. I really enjoy the Tri Navi on the NEX 7. Much more modern indeed.

Agreed. I’d chose the more minimal, function over form approach of Sony, if I had a choice.
Agreed, admin please have this jew banned from this forum. We don’t need or want racist comments on this forum.
Charles nice language yourself. I can see you are a very smart man.
@ Charles — “jew”
Really?
WTF???????
You are NOT funny
They have no plans for a full frame interchangeable mount…
‘I have no idea if it would be good or bad for our Fujifilm business and customers – the X-Pro user would be opposed to a full-frame body because their lenses may not be [compatible],’ added Kawahara.”
What you might see is…
Fuji will take the same route as Sony and release a full frame version of the X100. It’ll cost 4k while being lower spec than the RX-1. The only company that is in a position to release a full frame mirrorless is Sony.
Fuji should’ve gone FF from the start with the X-Pro1 and really set themselves apart. They promised FF quality from their sensor, but now they’re always compared to Sony NEX and mFT cams and can barely beat those out when you factor in the issues with AF and early RAW support.
Now they’re worried about what their X-Pro1 customers would think if they brought out a FF model? It’s a 1 year old system, if you’re going to act, now’s the time!
In fact it loses to NEX in good light due to lower chrominance resolution.
Looking forward to Fuji’s answer to RX-1, which should heat up the competition. Ignore Leica, they are not in another league. They are in another planet.
Where did Leica buy this 24 Mp FF sensor? Ideas, anyone? It can’t be a Kodak, I presume.
Belgian company CMOSIS. Assembled in France.
One Full Frame NEX is not enough. Sony has two excellent Full Frame Sensors at the moment. The 24MP and 36MP.
Here’s what I’d like to see:
An NEX-5 type with the 24MP FF Sensor and no EVF.
An NEX-6 type with the 24MP FF Sensor and EVF.
A top of the line NEX-7 type with Tri-Navi, EVF and 36MP FF Sensor.
Make it happen Sony, just offering one Full Frame NEX will not be enough!
a full frame mirrorless with control similar to slr like Nex7 made by anybody has the potential to steal customers from any of the brands provided they launch some reasonably compact lenses to go with it.
I don’t think the current e-mount lenses are too big. I would however really like it if sony released an updated version of the HVL20AM so that you could swivel the flash head at least 180 in all directions.
Fuji Fuji Fuji, trying to pull a punch “Of course, I like that kind of camera but it is completely different to our series because the design is too modern.‘”
Agree with your comments Andrea.
And I’m not convinced Fuji would execute a FF ILC properly. They have rushed every enthusiast model camera to the market starting with the X10 and since. They simply do not interest me despite how lovely the cameras look. In hand, I find them frustrating to use and unintuitive. Lots of promise and little delivered in the “useability” factor.
Sony has always done better than Fuji in that regard, as most other makers have as well.
Carl Garrard
Perhaps these Japanese camera companies should get together and bring about a new era of digital photography. The interchangable sensors era. So they can focus more attention to ergonomics and UI.
Bring back some of the good from the film era into the digital age.
The camera makers can make the body/shell and mount, then the sensor/electronic makers can make the interchangable ‘digital backs’. Companies like Sony doesn’t have to worry about ergonomics, and Fuji doesn’t have to worry about firmwares.
Although it certainly would be ‘nice’ to have interchangeable sensors (easy upgrades when the sensors improve) it seems naive.
1) The vendors want to sell you another camera when they have improved the sensor
2) The on-camera processing is very-particular to the sensor hardware
… I guess, in an ideal world…
Is what Ricoh does with GXR. That said I think it’s better to just have the body house the sensor.
All manufacturers “talking about FF mirrorless”, should stop talking and make it happen ASAP.
Cause someone else will do it. And who makes first usable (reasonable priced) FF, will win next round.. and maybe war.
NEX already did it with VG900. Get in line to buy one, then. I think that lens adaptability, price and other things come into play, though.
If the RX1 is a hit, IMHO Fuji will drop a FF X100 to test the waters and then follow with a FF Xpro1.
Why are sony (and most other camera’s) always more expensive in Europe than in the US. I the US the RX-1 costs 2,798.00 dollar. Wex camera Germany sells it for Euro 3099,– which comes down to 4014,45 dollar. Wex UK sells it for 2799 pound sterling which comes down to 4531 dollar. It’s better to buy a plain ticket to the US buy the camera stay in a nice hotel and still spend less money than when i buy the camera in Europe.
(if it’s due to exchange rates, shouldn’t they consider that.
From what I’ve heard, people in most European countries need to pay a very high sales tax(VAT) for things.
You’d be surprised how many visitors to NYC do just that;) Go to the B&H, arguably the biggest photo store in the world and you’ll be welcomed by cacophony of languages from all over the world. Glad it is my “local” shop;)
Leica FF isn’t simply another league, it’s another concept of photography only, while Sony already announced their NEX-VG900, which is video first and photography second – that’s a market Leica could only sell rebranded Panasonic stuff. Therefore I’d expect the NEX-9 as focused on video & photography the same way they did with their A99.
But I also think for this sort of customers Sony should consider a longer Firmware Update Support instead of bothering every year to buy something completely new…
Even the a99 is VID first and STILLS second… Sony doesn’t make a camera that is primarily stills oriented any longer. In fact they’ve admitted the a99 isn’t 36mp because it would hamper the video capabilities.
You consider….?
I have bought LEICA M..because i get the real
for my money…. others are to expensive for
another experiment…
SONY you have lost me…by
Even hints from Panasonic going FF
http://www.43rumors.com/two-new-interviews-panasonic-ff-is-possible-olympus-we-will-have-new-evf-technology/
Sony leads and ever body follows.
😉
Why on Earth would anyone want an expensive FF camera which is too small to hold comfortably, looks rediculous with FF lenses (imagine a NEX with 70-200 f/2.8!:)) and doesn’t have proper autofocus?
With mirrorless there’s a chance to have extremely high quality WA in compact package, like this: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12196364/18vsKit.jpg
Or extremely high quality 35/1.4 lens in compact package: http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/35luxreviewtitle.jpg
And so on.
I mean, with mirrorless technology we can build compact high quality WA and normal lenses without much additional size and weight. 70-200 is another matter, but personally I don’t care much, I much prefer wides and normal lenses.
Because not all full frame shooters do everything with a huge 70-200/2.8. I shoot prime lenses 90%+ of the time, and many of them are quite compact.
If this had an integrated Optical viewfinder it would be amazing for street photography, i cannot take pictures by looking at the screen. Guess i will either go for the nex6 or wait for something else 😐
How fast do you think the AF will be on the RX1? Faster than NEX7?
And when can we expect to see a real review of the camera?
I’m sososo excited, this is my dream camera, and sony is gonna sell SO many of these!
Magnus,
After early OCT I should know a lot more about the RX1 and can answer that question for you if it’s not already answered. I held off on almost all commentary on the new releases because they were very green pre-production cameras (firmware wise). A lot will change between the time I got a preview, and early OCT. Likely DPR or someone else will have more info up earlier but it depends on how fast they get production level units with finalized firmware (the only hold up now).
Carl Garrard
Hi Carl, thanks for your answer. I guess I just have to wait, I’m just so excited about this camera, and I really hope it will live up to my expectations. Now I’ve preordered it, and I guess I’ll see. Thanks.
No problem. I can’t wait to get my hands on it (and the other) Sony cameras again, but it won’t be long now for all. The question I have now is which camera do I review first… 😉 ?
Carl Garrard
The RX1 😉
I’m getting one for sure. With the optical 1.4 and 2.0 zoom + macro mode it can do pretty much all I need.
Agree, the main problem of FF MILC is not AF, it is the sensor. It may be MF but still not usable with some FF lenses. One shouldn’t be nazi to accept this. We should wait and hope that major sensor manufacturers wi’ll learn how to fix this.
Fuji mean expensive! If Fuji manage to be the 1st company release mirrorless FF, defintely Fuji will price this mirrorless FF greater than existing canoo, nikon and sony DSLR FF price due to the reason – 1st kind of camera! 😀
the cooked duck is flying to Fuji… ho ho ho…. (sony santa claus) 😀
How did the discussion turned from camera to justifiable-opinion-based on-impartial-observation?
How about a 28-50 “Tri-Elmar” style update to the RX1, rather than interchangeable lenses ? With good 2x digital zoom, you’d cover 99% of situations. I’m in. But then, I’m in for the RX1 as well, so … 😉
Andrea, thanks so much for the link.
I could afford to buy the RX-1, and was mildly tempted, but I will pass on it. If Sony could come up with an RX-2 with an 18-70 f/2.8 lens (or even a 24-70) and equip it with a viewfinder, I would be all over it. Even such a camera with an APS sensor similar to NEX-7 would make me get out the credit card. So if you are reading this, Sony, how about it?
All this full frame stuff is great for people who can shell out thousands for new camera bodies. The bottom line is the APS c versions are perfectly fine for the 98% of us not making money from photography, doing this as a hobby and recording memories. Very few of the people on the internet clamoring for more, better and bigger would become better photographers because they were able to spend the great sums of money this equipment will cost. How about continuing to improve the equipment that is out there now. Sony, I am still waiting for my NEX 7 firmware update, and no I am not going to buy the NEX 6 instead.
I thought about buying the RX-1, but have decided to pass on it. If Sony would make a similar camera with a 24-70 f/2.8 leaf shutter lens and an integrated viewfinder–and it does not have to be as small–I would be all over it, even if the price is higher than the RX-1. I might be wrong, but I’d bet that they could sell a lot of those.
Fuji announce 18MEGA pixel plus full frame mirrorless camera and i will pre order mine right now.
