An image sample taken with the A3000 and Zeiss 16-70mm lens (Source: Gustav from Dyxum)
–
The first and only website showing image samples with the new A3000 and Zeiss lens is Gustav from Dyxum (Click here). Gustav writes:
conlusion for me , A3000 is a very nice camera for his price (350 euro)
ofcourse it has also his negatives , but for this price you get a very nice camera with a very very good sensor , and for me personal is that the most important.
ZEIS 16-70 F4 OSS , not to big , not to small very good build , perfect combination at the A3000 and all NEX-camera`s , very good with the lens wide open (F4) , only negative is the price (1000 euro)but it is a “must have lens”
Some of you may wished the lens to be a stop faster. But these would have come to a high cost (more weight and greater size). I prefer the compact size (it’s only a tiny bit bigger than the 24mm Zeiss) and I bet it will become the main kit lens for many NEX owners. And one more thing: Stay tuned on SAR, because more great Zeiss lens are coming soon 🙂

Name in Sweden: ILCE-3000 …
could barely have been worse
Yes, same name here in Holland. Specs don’t make sense either: Tru-finder EVF?? Swiveling screen?? Instead of noise reduction, this new Bionz processor is now capable of sound reduction according the Dutch description. May come in handy when shooting concerts to reduce shutter sound 😉
And a staggering 0,5cm 0.2″ EVF LOL
Full of errors, made on monday I guess
Is it just me or is nobody commenting in how cheap 18-105 turned out to be?
Weren’t people expecting it to be over $1k?
yes the price is impressive I was expecting above 800, but then again we should hold judgement until we see some decent reviews first
The price is really nice, although I was hoping it would be lower than 600€ (now that we know it is $600 in the US).
Nope, it’s US$399.00 with kit lens! Amazingly cheap.
I would not say cheap…
But more rightly priced… Which looks like cheap for Emount.
I honestly don’t expect how people could expect it to be cheaper than $600. The closest is probably the 18-105mm Nikon VR lens which sells for $400 on amazon. Now in addition to being an all plastic lens (including the lens mount) that lens is a whole stop slower at the long end. So not a valid comparison.
So a much better built lens that is faster and has a power zoom option as well sells for just $200 more than an old lens whose price has reduced over the years is a stellar feat for Sony.
I agree with the wait on the real tests and comparisons to come around before passing judgement on the price.
However, Sony has yet to release any MTF yet like it did for the RX1 Sonnar. By that as experience, the MTF released by Sony was actually quite accurate when it came to the real life performance of the lens even when the MTF was calculated and not measured (which a lot of people took as marketing babble at the time)
So, Sony…any MTF to give us an idea so we can pre-order?
Sony has the MTF charts up on the product pages:
18-105: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666594703
16-70: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666594707
Especially impressed with the 18-105 chart, can’t wait to image samples…
The Zeiss one looks OK. The Sony one is great in the centre but then it quickly depreciates. When the sangital and tangential (spell check?) lines are so far apart, the actual resolution is not good. True for the RX1 Sonnar MTF, too, where there is a slight mid zone dip in resolution that looks like astigmatism.
I have come to the conclusion that I do not understand these charts. I took the 16-70 chart and compared it to the SEL18200LE one and to me the latter actually seems to score better. That cannot be right can it?

At 16 or 18mm (Zeiss and Sony) both seem to perform about the same.
However, at the other end of the zoom range, Zeiss is clearly better.
Sure I am going to spend a grand on a Zeiss and stick it on a camera with no manual controls and no way of checking the focus. This toy gives a new dimension to the problems of mirrorless.
Now some nerd will “measure” it in a “lab” and say the pictures look great. Look here, that has nothing to do with photography. Understood?
On the other hand, this toy might sell well (with the kit lens) to the point-and-shooters. You know, the sort who take cheap cruises or sing on coach trips.
You are clearly misunderstanding something. All NEX cameras have manual controls and ways of checking focus.
Really? Where do you see the dedicate dials for aperture and shutter speed here? And how are you going to check the focus with that viewfinder?
Some hints:
I like to check the focus while I shoot, not after; for this, I need a big, bright and detailed viewfinder, this is 240×320.
I also like to change the exposure with a fingertip, and I hate taking my eye off the seeker and delving into menus.
Sure it’s cheap, and as usual with electronic toys, you get what you pay for – not a penny more, maybe quite a bit less. Be sure to have it with you on your next cheap cruise, 199 GBP for 5 days.
Gee, then simply buy another one of the available models.
That would be too easy…..
money can’t buy class. and you’re my prime example.
i bet your own photography is terrible, whatever gear you own.
You are a sad boy jj, now go and do your homework.
Anotherpoor canon fan boy. What does an canon eos m gve u? Check focus in view finder? Whops eos m even dun have a crap view finder?no built-in flash? How do u change apeture on eos m? And how much does the eos m cost u? It wad US799!! Double the price of a3000. Great CANON!
I see them on the top of my NEX 7 and and the dial on the back of my old c3. JUST LIKE CANON only tri wheel is better.
Nope. Nex 7 is just like Nex 7, and that is really not great shakes. Those menus are childish to say the least.
You are right in general terms, but this camera is aimed at the Walmart consumers, and I think it’s a smart move. The Zeiss lens on top is only for marketing, like check out the BMW 7, see how hip? Now you can buy the 1 without feeling too bad, poor sod.
I think this is really where Sony should have been from the beginning, they just never cut it with the higher market segments – it may be due to their poor UIs, their poor service, their short lifetime, whatever, but they never made a convincing serious cam. The RX1? That’s just more marketing, I’d rather take the Ricoh GR anytime.
CDAF doesn’t need microfocus adjust, and using peaking with zoom is how most people manually confirm focus. In fact it’s superior to a pentaprism and Katz eye.
Hey, Grumpy Pantz… maybe you should go on more walks to freshly oxygenate that brain of yours. Don’t get me wrong… we love your banal rant… but would appreciate it more if you got your facts right first.
Oh look, someone who doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Who took a shit in your muesli? Wake up and look around, there are other people on this planet and surprise, some may have different wants and needs from yours.
Shut up prat.
Poor “Jason”…
Just want to say that you are doing a great job here at SAR. Always some new rumors, and always what i want to read. Keep up the good work!
Images look really, really good, and it is to be expected from a top-notch lens that costs 3 times as much as the camera. Now let’s see some samples taken with the c*rap kit lens.
We have all seen zillions of photos taken with both of the NEX kit lenses. They are not the equal of top price Zeiss lenses but they are perfectly OK.
The extra 4 Megapixels in the new sensor compared to the NEXs will not make the image quality worse.
So does a3000 comes with WIFI and NFC?
sony website said yes but didn’t see anyone mention them?
The 16-70 is a good kit lens for the upcoming Nex-7n ! But a little pricey ..
Andrea, may be some news for the Zeiss (Touit) standard zoom lens ?
Zeiss (not Sony licence with Zeiss) told they will come with a zoom too !!
These shots show off this lens really well but I can’t wait to see the brick walls and stamp shots now. I have also upgraded the firmware on my NEX 7 to 1.03 and the only noticeable difference was the camera seemed quicker when switching between shoot mode and viewing the pictures, and when navigating through the menu.
This is shaping up to be a nice camera! I wish the screen was at least 480k dots but hey, it’s cheap!
Well it’s confirmed, the A3000 takes pictures and the Zeiss bends light.
@Jan: I’m shocked at how cheap the 18-105 is. It could be the sleeper hit. I mean there are SOME dogs in the G line but most are excellent. Sure, the lens is big and I’m sure with the same number of elements, speed, and less zoom range, the Zeiss is much better corrected, but for the price difference I think I’m more likely to pick up the 18-105mm.
Since I do do some video this lens could be a bout perfect.
I agree with everything you said completely.
For me this 18-105 G lens is much more attractive lens than 16-70 zeiss, agree it’s bigger and heavier but it’s perfect all around lens. Besides it’ll probably be perfect video lens with lever zooming, but for stills you could still use standard rings (although this time they’re not mechanical, at least in case of zoom ring) but without markings on the lens barrel.
Hopefully it offers picture quality worthy of G branding, if so I’ll surely buy this lens.
Comparing the price between this and zeiss I’m shocked how much cheaper it is compared to it.
I know a four times World Press Photo winner who uses a Canon 24-105 f4 for his work. He uses no other lens that I am aware so if he can do what he does with f4, I am sure most of us can.
OSS helps a lot!
24-105L even not close. If sombody can make gold using shit this is not a prove that shit is not shit, this is a prove that hands of those users are like elixir-stone.
Who is it? Just curious.
I assume it’s an F4 on a Full Frame lens/camera (which would give more isolation than an F4 on a crop sensor).
No a 105mm f4 gives the same isolation regardless of format. It is when you start dealing with effective FL that this differs.
At the same focal length the “isolation” on an 24-105 F/4 lens will be the same on APS-C or full frame. The field of view will be smaller on APS-C
Fernando Moleres
I was just reading in a photography magazine that F4 is the new thing for cameras now a days. The lenses are not too expensive and with new sensor tech its a nice balance and I agree some what.
By the way. Although not 100% crops, the photos look like the Zeiss is really sharp. Maybe as sharp as the 24 E but probably more homogenous throughout the frame.
It does look very good from the samples. We need to see some more, but I believe I will be purchasing it. Decent price and great dimensions. Might even sell my 35 and 50, if it is really sharp.
I was thinking of the same. I want to see samples at ~35-40mm setting wide open because if the bokeh is sweeet, and sharp, this could compliment the RX1 for my 50ish and 70ish portrait lenses. I know the 50 1.8 is great but its too tele for my taste. Can’t really work with it so much. Was thinking of trading it for a 35mm.
Yep, the 50 is outstanding, but a strange focal length for me too. The 35 is also great, but not as good. Still though, it makes for a quite small package. How do you find the RX1? I’ve tried it when it as released and there was one single thing I didn’t like – the fixed LCD. Otherwise, it seems like a nice styrdy brick with great controls.
I was wondering whether the 35 could really be the ‘go to’ for the 50ish focal length. The best 50’s I have owned have been the 50mm Makro Planar ZE and the 45mm Contax G. Nothing has yet come to match any of those. I was wondering whether the Touit would do the job but it still feels a bit short of remarkable. I only have my 5n as well to match the Touit so maybe in the future I can re-get a NEX 7 and get the Touit. I don’t know.
RX1 is great. I also thought that loosing the articulating LCD of the 7 would do more harm than good but so far I haven’t really found that to be much of a hindrance. I just need to go back to the old school crouch or lift-arms-up-and-imagine-the-coverage technique. Becuase 35mm FOV is what I use 95% of the time, I can guesstimate really well.
AF is good. Manual and peaking do the think really well in MF. Fly by wire feels a bit more dampened than the 24mm E. You get used to it.
The only negative, and positive, I have for it is the weight. A bit too light to properly hold at slow shutter speeds. EVF helps a lot in this regard. Receiving an RRS grip and L plate soon to help me get a hold of the camera better.
I would say the RX1 is the best thing that has come close enough to give me what my Contax G2 did. Similar feeling. Awesome IQ (seriously man, really good)
I know the MP 50 and the 35mm won’t come close to it, unfortunately.
And from the samples I’ve seen I am not impressed by the Touits. But maybe I should actually try them.
Yep, the RX1 seems like an amazing camera, I hope they make a 24mm version. That’d be a definite buy. For the current one, I’ll simply wait a year and buy it for a bit cheaper. It will eliminate my need for a 35mm lens entirely. When you think of the price of the 24mm Zeiss.
I was able to afford an RX1 when I went to Japan. I paid the equivalent of $2400 in Yen for it. After selling the NEX 7, 24mm Zeiss, 35mm Nokton 1.2 II and 15mm 4.5 with adapter I was able to afford the RX1+EVF+charger+UN lens hood+Gariz half case.
I thought I was crazy selling a body and 3 lenses for the RX1. Now I look at the photos and never regretted it. Because the Nokton seldom saw active duty, I didn’t feel bad selling it. I thought ‘in the future I would just get the Sony with OSS and call it quits’. Now I think, ‘If the RX2 with a 50mm comes and the lens is as good as the 35, I can call it quits then’. It would be a massive boom if it has macro like the 50ZE.
I can only dream.
For now I am just thinking of getting another RX1 for back up…
Japan is great for shopping! I love their camera stores.
I believe you made the right choice with the RX1. If you use it more and you have better results, what else is there? If it had a 24mm lens I wouldn’t have a NEX-7 right now, guaranteed. I am very happy with the camera, though.
Where are you from, btw?
Yeah, because I have to work with the RX1 now, I really need to get down hammering it. Same thing I did with the NEX7 and the G2. The G2 especially since its AF system was very selective so you had to learn the things it liked.
Maybe the next RXx would be a 24mm and a 50mm. If Sony is smart enough and they do what Sigma does for their DP cameras, they would cater for the basic focal lengths. 28mm isnt much to differentiate between that and 35mm so that would not create as many sales as 24mm and 50mm. Keep fingers crossed. Even if the FF NEX comes and you are tempted to get that and a Voigtlander 24mm or Leica 24mm, I trust that the 24mm for the RX would deliver amazing edge and corner sharpness trumping those other lenses thanks to its dedicated design.
Let’s say I live in England. I can’t really divulge much info about myself.
Sorry to interrupt your convo you guys have for going on but i agree with 50mm on apsc being odd. I like 50mm with a FF FOV, it’s one of my favourites. I feel like I am always half a step the wrong way with 50mm on apsc. The contax G 45 I do not feel like that though on apsc and you get that great 3d effect.
Slingers, I find that particularly interesting: is it something inherent to the focal length or is that we simply need to use it for a couple of years and get used it? I have arguments for both.
“more great Zeiss lens are coming soon”
Is 2013 raining E mount lens year? it seems like Sony has slowly picked up the speed..
I love Gustav’s work and recommend a visit to http://www.gkiburg.nl
A nice guy and convinced me the 70400 was worth it and he was right!
There must be something wrong with my a77 because my photos they don’t look anywhere near as clear and crisp as his. 😛
My A77 is obviously broken too. 😀
I often point the CaNikon fanboys to his site, you know the type, the ones that go on about Sony being crap and all that stuff. It tends to shut them up!
I have A77 too and my photo look similar to the sample photo ONLY if I use my CZ 24-70 and ZA 135mm F1.8 🙂
Thanks for the link to Gustav’s web site. I enjoyed looking at his very good pictures. It makes me realize that I am not taking the time I need with my 70-400 G to get ideal shots. I probably use handheld too much. I can see why Sony worked with him.
I use a lightweight monopod.
Why Sony didn’t offer A mount f4 lenses?
Because E-mount sells better and compact lens designs are favored.
Yup, Canon and Nikon pros are throwing away their huge heavy DSLRs and getting a tiny NEX.
Oh yes and you have plenty of sales figures I suppose which show NEX outselling Alpha cameras. Oh wait ! You don’t !
At least it’s a good assumption.
But Sony has had how many years to produce them for the a-mount? Also, they had legacy F4s that could have been rebranded and would have sold very well. Especially considering how high ISO improvements have been made, constant F4 zooms are a great compromise for size and cost Vs 2.8s.
They’d not have OS and still cost more than the CaNikon equivalent that does.
Fixed aperture is important for video – allows zooming without exposure changes.
Precisely. PZ 16-50 had to be set at f/5.6 to have non changing apertures during zooming.
Sony has the 16-50 F2.8 lens for A mount, that is a very fast and sharp lens.
But it stops at 50mm. Now imagine how lovely a 70-200mm f4 SSM would be.
I think it’s because of how popular the beer can series was. There seems to be loads of 2nd hand copies available. It’s been all about E mount lately but I’m sure there is some A mount news coming soon.
wow the quality is alot better then i expected
Impressive results, especially for JPEG. New sensor + new Zeiss makes a great pair.
I don’t know if I want to spend more money on lenses for my NEX-7 or wait to see the FF NEX.
Now e-mount with APSC nex has a real nice line of lenses. This is the time to own the system. Time to do photography on nex.
Upgrade to nex7x is understandable. But I am not gonna go nex ff until I know lens line up is decent. That’s at least another year.
Putting resources into E mount with Zeiss glass when A mount badly needs f4 zooms.
You A-mount shooters always complain your F2.8 zooms are too fast.
I know you want F4, life is hard.
What’s with the out of focus area? Heavy post-process? What is the max aperture in 35mm terms? Is it because it’s close focussed?!?
It looks great. No. F4 in terms of light. Not sure what “it” is here, but the answer is probably “yes”.
**News flash** You CAN get out-of-focus areas with an F4 zoom on APS-C.
NO WAY!!!! REALLY?!?
My world’s just been turned upside down…!!
What will I do now? I always chased for 1.2 and 0.95 lenses only!
What have I become?
Nice one, mate, nice one.
I wouldn’t blame him, however, for not being able to imagine this.
Camera shops are a cancer when it comes to photographic reality. One dude was trying to sell me, a long time ago, a 24-70 2.8 L instead of the 24-105 f4 I could afford at the time. He was telling me how sweet my photography would get with 2.8 and how my pictures would glow in the dark thanks to it. He told me that would be the only lens I would ever need. That thanks to ISO performance advances 2.8 was the new 1.4 (his words, really)
I ended up buying neither because I thought he was a real twat. He obviously ‘knew better’.
Was the guy in the camera shop Jared Polin by any chance?
He could have been. Before the afro…
I like his video’s he was selling they are great for learners, I tell people to look them up. The site was better when Greg was around though.
Hey! Where are all those that tryed to put a huge amount of guck on new Sony lenses? A?
Where are you? Chicken shit!
wow! great pictures by Gustav. I like this lens.
This camera has WIFI AND NFC?? the image quality seems very good ..willing to see more samples
Wow, those image samples taken with the A3000/Zeiss 16-70 lens just blew me away in how sharp they are, and at F4, the bokeh looks good to me. I was a little disappointed after reading some reviews of the Zeiss Touit lenses such as the audible focusing motor and other minor quibbles, and so I was hoping another lens would come along with the same type of results I could get with my 24mm Zeiss prime as well as its build quality. I love its solid feel and smooth focus ring, and even the plastic lens hood feels noticeably premium. It looks like this new Zeiss zoom from Sony is just what I was hoping for.
crap crap CRAP
Sony A3000
Pros
+ EVF
+ 20.1 megapixel sensor
+ 1080p HD recording
+ clear image zoom
+ DRO and picture effects
+ NFC sharing
+ multi-interface hotshoe
+ deep grip, small form factor and weight matches well with E-mount lenses
+ price
Cons
– contrast detect only
– fixed non-touchscreen 3inch 230K LCD
– no eye sensor for EVF
– 3.5fps continuos shooting
– 470 shots battery
– USB 2.0
This seems like a camera that would appeal to (1) poseurs who are concerned with the the size and shape of the camera (2) those on a budget and developing markets with lower incomes (3) casual photographers who want a step up in image quality that they can quickly share online using NFC, automatic settings and basic user interface.
I do not think Canon Rebel line would be too worried at this point except for their own sales issues. The Canon SL1 is in a totally different price bracket, however it also seems like a less compromised camera. The Sony shows shades of the Canon 1100D, however with better features.
It seems Sony has designed a bridge/a38 successor/Canon 1100D competitor that will not canniblise sales from their other, more lucrative NEX and SLT lines except possibly the NEX-3N. If anything, it makes current and past SLTs such as the a37 more attractive.
Something to note when the Sony a35 was upgraded to the a37:
230k -> 921k LCD
Fixed -> Flippy LCD screen
5.5 -> 7 shots per second
420 -> 500 shots battery life
Summary
Judging by early sample photos this camera is capable of taking impressive photos with the sensor and the relatively small form factor will balance well with E-mount lenses.
HD video recording, less useful than it could be due to the low quality fixed LCD.
The EVF, although not the best, is still one of the better features due to the rear LCD and a selling points, is let down by the lack of an EVF eye sensor so users have to press a button every time to use this feature.
The inclusion of NFC is attractive (especially for today’s youth) to upload better quality images than a smartphone to compatible devices for quick online sharing, however the lack of touchscreen again makes this less appealing than it could be.
This camera, like the Canon 1100D, was built to a sharp price point and it shows. For the beginner target demographic it will sell however it makes you wonder what features could of been improved for the masses if Sony had raised the price a little more, especially since the E-mount lenses are not cheap.
In the meanwhile, unless you fall into one or more of the three categories mentioned earlier, are an enthusiast photographer, or already own the Sony SLT a35/a37, then the current NEX and SLT lines are more attractive. Things could change on the early September announcements or hopefully a year from now when a replacement for this, albeit yet to be released camera, is announced.
Anderton
I expect there is probably already a higher spec A5000 all ready for production in a few months time.
This looks GREAT. I’m surprised by the macro ability of this lens. That might be enough to push me over the edge.
Holy crap those are some really really nice images.
I love how this shows its better to spend money on glass and worry about a expensive camera that will eventually be dirt cheap later. I know so many people who make money from photography who keep getting newer models and wont upgrade the damn lenses.
Couldn’t agree more. After looking at these images, I was blown away. Sure there are things that many people wish Sony included or didn’t skimp out on, but at the end of the day, they stuck in the most important bits to produce fantastic image quality, all out of a $400 with decent viewfinder! I have a feeling this camera will sell well indeed on those merits alone. This could be a great way for Sony to push their lenses as well since the point of entry using this model and the 3N is so low, any possible savings in cash could go towards buying the higher quality lenses.
I don’t know this Gustav, but this is the worst ilc Sony has ever made. Where are the dials? Where is a useful viewfinder? But hey, stick a Zeiss on it in an ad and the Walmart people will scoop it up.
The dial is in the back, in the control circle (just like other NEX’s, with the exception of the NEX7). I wish they had placed another dial by the mode switch (like the NEX6), but alas…
thanks everyone
gustav
Thank you, actually. When you have more great samples, please let SAR readers know, I believe they will be greatly appreciated.
No, thank you Gustav! Great pictures!
A ILC camera like the A77, could be great (ILC-7000) weather sealed, 5-axis IBIS, a very much improved video quality with clean HDMI uncompressed output, manual audio options with monitoring. faster shutter speed 1/8000, high ISO improvements.
How many camera lines do we think Sony is going to try and pull off? Could they really the NEX 3, 5, 7 and 9, as well as the A3000, A5000, A7000 and A9000? That would be 8 different lines and that doesn’t even include the misfits like the NEX 6.
Well look at Canon and Nikon in their DSLR line, there are a lotnof cameras too, nobody complains. Sony comes with one Mirrorless DSLR lookalike, and you invent 4 new cameras for Sony: as the ILCE-5000, ILCE-7000 and the ILCE-9000, or the Nex9 does not exist at this moment.
I feel strangebwhen people are complaining about the choice they may get in some distance future.
You must’ve misunderstood me, Im not complaining, I love it. The more choice, the better!
I thought this was a rumour site, so doesn’t that allow me to post wild speculation?
Cheer up matey!
One year ago I jumped into the mirrorless camera world and bought a Nex 6 and EM5 and some basic lens for each. I like each of them for different reasons. I would love to see that 5 axis ibis in Sony cameras. Now I am at a crossroads thinking about which mirrorless to go with by buying high end glass for only one of the lines. Looking at the output of Gustav’s shots with the new CZ 16-70 maybe what tips me more to Nex. But I am sure tempted by the Olympus 43 glass. I do not want to buy high end glass for E mount and 43. I already have the best A mount stuff. Any thoughts?
What do any of you think about whether an upgrade from the Sony 16-50 f 2.8 SSM with the Sigma 18-2.8 f1.8? I shot a lot of theatre, stage dancing and plays with the a77. Any advantages?
As you said, not much difference between NEX and m43 except IBIS and some lenses. If NEX has all the lenses you need, I’d say stick with it, as you can use whatever Alpha gear you have. Or you can do the same by going 43 and m43, but you won’t have an upgrade path to FF, which I believe will benefit your type of shooting.
It is hard to tell you what to do. Lok at it this way:
This picture is taken by a very good photographer who knows how to get the best out of a camera/lens combination. It shows what this combination is caoable of in the right hands. I think he could do the same wit m43 cameras and one of their better lenses.
For you, as you tell you own high quality A-mount lenses, you could go for an adapter for the A-mount lenses and you could go fo the high quality m43, so you can should high IQ on both systems…
this year is NEX-year….and the year is not over 🙂
2014 shall be alpha year , only we can do is wait ….but i think great time`s shall come

nex has the advantage of being compatible with your a-mount stuff. la ea2 works very well. no other brand has anything comparable (yet, but Canon is slowly catching up).
Recently I just abandon my Nex waiting for a true new generation, right now i’m using a GH3 for video and the OM-D for photos, the 5-axis IBIS is just fantastic for manual lenses.
Both your mirrorless cameras are good. It’s your choice between new Zeiss 16-70/4 and Zuiko 12-40/2.8.
The new CEO of Sony seems has a vision….will wait to see where he takes Sony…
So far, so good 🙂
looks like a great zoom for its size.
NEW FIRMWARE IS OUT for some NEX and the A99.
Just like we worried, the A77 will NOT get new firmware:
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/SLT-A99V/updates
Bad news for me and other a77 lovers!
Sony should treat it’s all customers equally!!
There really isnt much new with the update anyway…certainly no new JPG engine.
“This utility updates the SLT-A99 firmware to version 1.02 , and provides the following benefits:
Addition of HDMI simultaneous output mode: during movie recording standby, the camera will be able to display smooth 50fps video simultaneously on both external monitor connected via HDMI and LCD screen of the camera.
Note: the camera needs to be in Movie mode with [HDMI Info. Display] set to [Off].”
Sony wouldnt give us much with updates – they want us to all buy the NEW cameras…there’s no money in updates. Bummer. Sony proved to me they dont care about us. I’m listing all my Alpha gear on Ebay right now. 2 x A900, 1 x A77, Mino 24-105, Mino 400 4.5, Sony 70-200, Sony 50 1.4, CZ 85, CZ 135 and accessories. I’ll post the link once its all up.
First I have to disagree with you:
I own a n A700, it got several FW updates, one improving high ISO IQ.
I own a Nex5 I got several FWupdates for that camera, one offering me focus peeking and some fun art filters. All this at the moment the successor with these features was allready in the shops. I did not expect these bonus, so I was very pleased.
You know that a FW update is there for 2 reasons:
1. to fix a bug in the FW. You can expect in that case a FW update from Sony.
2. to add some extra functionality. In this case you can’tbexpect Sony to give that in every camera. There should be a great new function, that can be performed by the cameras hardware, that can be put in.
So what bugs are there in the FW? What are the missing features.
To be honest, Sony is not a good example for f/w updates. I can understand upset people.
What I thought would come (that it should have had from Day 1)
Tethering Control
Faster Menu Access
Better control over noise reduction for JPG (NR Off option)
What I was hoping for (a courtesy from Sony)
Better JPG engine
By the way, I ended up trading all my gear for a used Nikon D800E and comparable lenses in really good condition. Should be here soon!
Sad to see it go but at the same time very glad!! Sony Blows.
The firmware for nex is not a good news too !!
They could do propose nothing it could had been the same !
This firmware is a shame for the Nex 7 !!!
We have long suspected that IF Sony released firmware for the A77 it would only be lens profiles anyway.
They can’t even be bothered to release a good update for the flagship SLT!
Yup…exactly my thoughts.
If you look at exif data of the images, you won’t miss there’s pretty much sharpening in almost all photos with PS CS5. The colors are boosted as well. Still, looks impressive for the price
I personally assume all sample photos taken with new cameras and lenses are processed at least to the degree of sharpening and minor levels/color adjustments. I think many others do as well since it really has become the norm when looking at any photos online these days and the ease of use to process your images using Photoshop, Lightroom, or whatever. That’s why sites explicitly say when their photos have been left untouched since it’s assumed that have been processed. With that in mind, I am still blown away with these images keeping in mind we’re talking about an entry level camera with a Zeiss lens attached. Proof people can take amazing photos without spending a small fortune on a camera body 🙂
….. 24-105 CANON L WITH METABONES will give you 2.8….
Plus it’s around 600-800 on ebay….
These days I am considering to sell my D800 and 5d mk3 and moving to nex7… BECAUSE of speed booster.
My 300 mm 2.8 lens became 2.0…. which refers to from 5500(USD) to 13000(USD).
I just don’t get it why people have so many things they can hang around, and just don;t use it…
I was waiting for the news, however I think I will go for 24-105 canon + metabones at the end….
-May be, because I am a video guy, who doesn’t need autofocus that much…
With images quality like we are seeing here, will someone please explain to me why we need a full frame NEX?
You don’t need FF NEX if you:
a) only take photos in bright lighting.
b) are ok with cropped focal lengths.
Much better low light performances, much better bokeh, wider lenses for landscape shooters.
Much better low light performance — yeah, by about one stop. Maybe one and a half.
Better bokeh — Nope. Just ‘more’ bokeh, not necessarily better, as that’s only a lens thing.
Wider lenses — The 10-18 (15mm eq) or 12mm 2.8 (18mm eq) are really not wide enough?
Much better, or marginally better?
Price/performance on this camera/lens combo seems unbeatable!
My guess it will be some thing like small D800E. Very big resolution on special lenses. Not everyone need it really, but sure there will be guys that need.
I mostly like the dynamic range of the full-frame sensors. It somehow cannot be achieved by smaller sensors. The full-frame pictures always seem more “full” and true to life to me, the APS-C images have a certain flatness to them.
