First image samples taken with the huge Tamron 150-600mm lens.

At Blog Naver (Click here) you can see the very first image samples taken with the new Tamron lens (link found via Dicahub). The A-mount lens is now listed at BHphoto (Click here). But there is no info on price and availability yet.

Specs at Tamron.

  1. Images look good. I’d like to see some more shots of the bokeh at the long end though. That’s were these super tele zooms tend to get funky.

    1. really? i don’t have much experience with anything longer than 300mm, but that bizon shot has lots of noise (check the fur), is that considered “acceptable” for such a lens?

      1. @waldomarek:
Note that noise is NOT a function of the lens… noise is 100% based on the sensor (at a given ISO — higher ISO’s = more noise).

At most, a “slow” lens (i.e. with narrow aperture) can force the sensor to use a higher ISO in compensation; and of course ultra-telephoto’s often need a cranked-up shutterspeed (using the 1/FL rule), which in turn may call for a higher ISO. This tends to be a double-whammy on ultra-telephoto’s, which have that long FL *and* don’t have ultra-fast apertures, so the ISO can get doubly-raised in all but the brightest of scenes…

But the lens itself — the glass elements — does not create a “more noisy” or “less noisy” image.

        1. @Mike:

Probably NOT shot with the a77… Tamron makes lenses for several mounts, and will almost-certainly make CaNikon mounts available first, just because of the market-shares of those mounts.

*IF* these are genuinely taken with a sample or pre-production copy of this lens, bet on a Canon or Nikon mount.

          1. OK, so I’ve gotta recant my earlier remarks that I thought these sample images might have been taken with another lens; I’ve just seen the info from Tamron, and this is the same set of images.

For the record, the shooter is “Ian Plant.” He shoots Canon, but isn’t a gearhead or a fanboi (he bought the Nikon 12-24 & uses it via adapter, and describes it as “hands-down” better than any Canon offering). As @Vlad says, likely a 5Diii shot (but still, likely a pre-production lens).

    1. Since I would be using this with a NEX-6 or NEX-7, I would like to see VC on the Sony version, possibly with an option to turn it off.

      1. It’s a “VC” lens. To date, Alpha-mount either doesn’t have the VC mechanism, or it’s not connected, because of in-body SSS. Other mounts without IBIS (e.g. Canon, Nikon for their SLR lines) *do* have the VC.

I’m not sure if Tamron has ever made the “identical” lens for E-mount or m4/3 that they make for SLR/SLT… it would, at least, need a bit of empty tube/lensbarrel, to adjust for the very-different flange-focal distance. BUT, if they did make this with native E-mount, there is every reason to believe that it WOULD have Tamron’s VC mechanism turned on. Of course, that wouldn’t help a-mount versions of the lens used with adapters… :-/

    2. Yellowstone is almost in my back yard, so that is where I will take most of my wildlife shots. The bison portrait is very sharp – sharper than images I have seen posted for the Sigma 150-500. The alpha mount Sigma has optical stabilization, but it looks like the Tamron does not. If I get the Tamron, I guess I will need a heavy duty tripod.

      1. Checkout dotline dl-v9 camera sopport.
This will allow you to handhold this lens…especially if you lean your back against a tree.

  2. Are there original size images or 100% crops somewhere? What I’ve seen so far looks somewhat downscaled to me, even where there are links to larger versions of the image.

    1. More stuff and tests will eventuall show up but based on the specifications and tanron details i expect this lens to be.vry good at 600 mm and less then excellent at the 150 end.
That is exactly what i would want for a lens like this …no compromise on tje long end.

  3. I seriously have to wonder if these are genuine… Just “announced,” but NO availability-date for ANY mount… And the “sample” photo’s aren’t hosted at Tamron’s own website???

Who but Tamron has this lens? Who is “Blog Naver” / “Sun-Photo” and where did they get this lens to take these sample photos?

Maybe this is just Tamron’s way of “keeping it real” — by faking a leak?

    1. naver is like google of korea.
and naver blog is frequently used blog method just like wordpress and google blogs.

Sun Photo is the main distributor for tamron, zeiss (m mounts), and other photo gears in Korea. I don’t think they will fudge things by releasing something that Tamron doesn’t want them to since they are the number one korean store/site to go to get authentic tamron equipments.

  4. Interesting note about the specs of this lens.
Compared to sigma 50-500 the following specs are almost identical
    Lengh
    Diameter
    Wieght
    F #
    Filter thread diameter
And based on overseas prices i think even the price will be similar
Now consider…20% more reach…40% more lght gathering ability…and desighn optimized for best performance at the longest focal lengths.
This lens was clearly specifically desighned to compete against the sigma…with this lens tamron will kick sigmas butt!

    1. I have the Sigma 50-500 and I love it. If you don’t want to switch lens (which takes longer since this lens is big) the 50mm is sometimes useful. And it has 1:3 magnification at 200mm, which is also very useful.

BTW how do you know the Tamron has 40% more light gathering ability? Maybe it is also 6.3 at 500mm

      1. Basic math….the first element is 40% larger….thats 40% more light gathered
        Also f6.3 at 600mm is 40% more light than f6.3 at 500mm.

      2. If you only carry a single camera the extra zoom range is usefull.
I also agree about the magnification…but that magnification is not available at the 500mm end.
If yu carry 2 bodys then the normal range is not needed.
Sigma makes a 70-300 macro apo zoom with 1/2 magnificaton.
        Tamron makes a similar.
I always use more than one camera so this lens sounds great to me.

      1. My fingers are too fat for the tiny keys on my smartphone.
Also there is no speelchech here.
Lastly…….THERE IS NO WAY TO EDIT SAR COMMENTS.
I am more frustrared with my misspelled comments than you are.

  5. Tamron should offer thier tele-extenders in sony mount.
The are well matched to thier lenses and i would like to buy this lens and an extender.

    1. Better yet, ask Sony to make SLT camera with several 1″ BSI sensors. The quality could be much superior vs. one APSC + teleconverter

  6. Question for the experts here – if I buy an A7R would it be better to have either the LEA4 adapter with this lens in A-mount or same lens in Nikon or Cannon with a metabones adapter? If you get the Canon version with VC enabled does that feature actually work through the metabones adapter??

    1. Definitely go for the Sony A-mount adaptor. The metabones adapter has no communication with the lens, so no auto focus, no EXIF and no IS. If you went for the speedboster for 5x the price, that would give communication, but would only work in APS-C crop mode. They do make some AF-capable non-speedbooster adapters, but even on the metabones website, they say AF is slow and unreliable. Remember, it’s having to go from one camera system to another, through an adapter. Meanwhile, the dedicated Sony adapter is speaking the same language all around.

      1. It just seemed to me a 600mm lens with no Stabilization might be a bad thing… How do you get 500-600mm with some stabilization on a A7R?

        1. A magical new invention called a tripod made especially wonderful with a gimbal head. Not using this with a 600mm WITH stabilization is questionable. Most professional grade 600mm lenses offer tripod-specific stabilization, designed for use with gimbal heads in fact.

Actual 600mm lenses belong on a tripod.

          1. Thanks Zachary for giving me the benefit of the doubt that I might have some use that could preclude the ability to employ a tripod. Nice that you assume people are all idiots and you are a genius. You might try a ‘magical invention’ called being ‘friendly’ rather than getting your jollies with useless sarcastic responses.

        2. I have never heard of anyone ever handholding a 600mm lens. Even a monopod properly used at a decent shutter speed and its fine.

        3. Thats what we have all been complaining about for a long time noe..
Its the double scree job for sony a mount users.
Sony screws us by not putting ibis on thier e mount cameras.
Tamron screws us by not putting vr on thier sony lenses because sony users dont need it.
Then they screw us two more times by charging us the same…and not making thier tele adapters for sony mount

I will never buy an e mount camera without ibis no matter what sony puts on it.
I do not want to buy tamron lenses but would rather buy sigma because they include stabilization for sony.
That being said sometimes tamron makes a lens that is too good not to buy..this is one of them and i plan to buy one.
If you want the vr and you want to use it on e mount then iether get canon/nikon mount or wait for the new a mount cameras to come out…im sure one of them will be similar to the a7r.

  7. Aside from the nice circular bokeh of the backlit bison, the pictures are not that impressive. To me, sharpness looks inferior to the Sony 70-400 G2, but I guess it’s a different category. The quality, though not stellar, might be good enough if the price is right though.

    1. The previous iteration of this lens cost about 60% the amount that the original iteration of the Sony 70-400 lens and had about the same weight profile. It wasn’t especially sharp either, but, put it on a full frame camera and make prints around the 18×12 size range and it will make you happy.

  8. The focus is reasonable sharp shooting with Canon 5D mark III at f9 but I believe I could get better image and cheaper with the Sony 500mm Mirror reflex f8 lens with Sony A7r. I have both Sony 500mm f4 and 500mm Mirror lens so I know what I am talking about.

      1. The test was using the A700 .I tested my with the A77 also corrected the focus with micro adjustment.Sony made the best auto focus mirror lens in the world. I have Sony 500mm f4, Sony 500mm f8 reflex and Sony 70-400mm G1&G2 . They are all good lenses .

      1. Nowadays if you correct the focus with micro adjustment on a 36 pixels camera . I believe you get get a very sharp image . I can’t wait to have a A mount 36pixels camera to test ally lenses .

        1. 36 pixels is very low resolution….the new a7r is 36 megapixels.
As for the quality of the 500mm f8 reflex you are talking about i find it EXTREMELY difficult to believe it would be a high quality lens but i have not actually seen one.
Mirror lenses are light, compact, inexpensive and have no chromatic abberation…those are thier only good qualities.
The center of the lens( the highest quality portion ) is blocked by the secondary mirror.
This means sloer speed, more distortion, less sharpness and less depth of field.
These lenses cannot be stopped down so can only be used wide open.
The out of focus areas form donought shaped images in the bacground.
Because these are catadipperic to make them smaller they also have glass elements…therefore the chromatic abberations that mirrors totally lack are introduced by the glass optics.
These desighn limitations are why I am so skeptical about your statement.
Reflex lenses are cheap enough that you can try one if you like and see if it is good enough for your needs.
I have not checked out any cat lenses because i expect it would be a waste of my time…
If you do get one and it actually does turn out to be a sharp high resolution lens let me know.

          1. The reflex lens has a bit high contrast but it is very light and compact . If you to spend almost $13000 like me that is the best way to go biit the reflexes less than $700 when I bought it . I also have the Minolta 600mm too. This is also as good as the Sony 50m f4 .

          2. Mirror lenses are toys from the 70’s, these days the way they render out of focus areas and highlights aren’t considered pretty anymore.

          3. There is a huge gap between a $700 mirror lens….though i think they are much cheaper than that…and a $13000 prime.
I think this 150-600mm zoom will go in the nieborhood of $1500 and fill that gap nicely.
Since this lens appears to be optimized to produce its higjest qiality images at the 600mm end i think it will fill that gap nicely an be a very good value.

  9. Saw the pictures taken with the Tamron 150-600, however all the 600mm shots were taken at f 9.0. It would interesting to see 600mm shots at 5.6.
I own a Sigma 150-500 and really only get good sharp images at f8.0.Lens needs to be stopped 2 stops down to get acceptable sharp images.

    1. The images look quite good IMHO but I would VERY interested in seeing images taken at 600mm f/6.3!!! If the tele end is reasonably sharp at full aperture, I might want one, depending on the price of course…

  10. Even 120-300 can’t achieve the clarity of a normal apochromatic 300/2.8 prime, I wouldn’t expect this 150-600 to be even on par with 300/4. Still waiting for anyone (sigma, are you there?) to release a modern 400mm/f4 with ~2.2kg weight!

      1. I know the rumours, but given the price of the comparatively subpar Sony 500mm f4 prime, I wouldn’t even count on it. Not mentioning the potential lack of built-in IS/OS.
