The video on top has been shot with the NEX-7! Be aware that the camera was using the firmware version 0.3! The video doesn’t really look good yet but I ma sure this is far away from what the final NEX-7 can deliver in terms of video quality. Firmware is in baby stage, the video was taken in full automatic mode and without knowing what kind of settings you should use to get the best out of the cam. And than there is also that youtube conversion. Try to analyze the original video: You can download the full original file by clicking on that Torrent-link: http://tinyurl.com/3txxcyu. Below you can read the full settings used to shot the video.

247Mb for 2 minutes?
ouch!!
And yeah cbf I’ll be waiting for proper vids to come out before I pass any judgement anyway
32GB / 247 MiB * 2m6s = 4h38m35s
Is my calculation correct?
Pretty much. I got ~4h32m.
Funny discussion in the background with a true capitalists verdict on all the new gadgets: “Wirtschaft muss laufen” (economy has to work)
hahahah, that’s sick that u understand what they’re saying
baby stages?? really?? there is around 1 month until release of this camera? should that not be sorted out already?? they should be getting these cameras packaged and ready to send to the distributors around the world no?? not still be working on image quality
Indeed, if seen from your point of view it looks scary!
NEX7 will leave factory at beginning of November. They are shipped by air. Firmware is the last to be finalized since you can only start truly optimizing it when the HW is finished. You are masking your ignorance by your arrogance.
2+ months for the Nex7. Not due until mid-November.
What jchristopher said. Don’t worry, it’ll come through. If not, we’ll troll on it =p
The NEX7 does NOT shoot RAW video. It shoots highly compressed low bit rate video, which is what this is. Please use teh correct terminology and stop confusing people!
“RAW” for non-youtube compressed video. RAW=original. RAW is not a standard!
No, RAW != original, RAW means unprocessed data directly from the sensor. This video has been processed by the camera just like it does with JPGs… Or are there RAW JPGs too?
Monday night is RAW 😀
Wow! What a great marketing term! “Highly compressed low bit rate” video. Sounds cool! And I am completely confused!
What is the ‘correct’ term?
‘”Highly compressed low bit rate” video’ returns less relevant google search results than ‘raw video format’
Doesn’t sound like teh internets agrees with you.
By RAW he means in it’s original recorded state in this instance. It isn’t incorrect. Meaning it hasn’t been changed or modified in post presumably?
This isn’t even recorded in the highest bitrate the camera supports, probably not worth much of a look.
RAW vs. raw? ;p
It seems like they will release the Nex7 prematurely. I am sure there will be a lot of complaints when consumers first get their hands on it!
From this video I will only comment on what I can see, and that is WB control is slightly off, and from the dancer/model the skin tones are quite yellow merged into highlight, doesn’t show refinement in video. There’s too much sensitivity in the auto exposure mode, and so a lot of jumping around in that!
Please Sony, don´t hurry and make the NEX-7 a proper camera. I can do without it under the Christmas tree but I am expecting it to arrive without teething problems (for the money it costs).
Well seen. Very well seen.
I have done videorecording and editing some 5-8 hours a day for the last 10 years – and I couldn’t even see that the problem was the NEX-7’s white balance.
Thought it could be some bad light :- ))
No jello effect when the camera panned quickly. At least I didn’t notice.
You’re going to confuse people with that title.
RAW is not a standard, it is a category.
That category is not synonymous with original, it means unprocessed, not merely not further processed. Here ‘processed’ means conversion to a standard. RAW is the full data stream, no codec. This is why reviews speak of. “true RAW” and “not really RAW” when comparing RAW outputs receiving various levels of processing above their pure RAW state.
It would be confusing and therefore a bad choice, but if you wanted to use the word in the sense of ‘original’ you should say ‘raw’ not ‘RAW’.
You could also call it a format, just not a standardized format.
Too bad it was interlaced (really PsF), I think native 24 or 25p would have given a better result. As it is the video looks worse than the 5n’s
This video has been shot with 1920×1080, 50fps Interlaced (1080i50).
Please do not judge the quality of this video, as I suggest that no one should use interlaced material any more.
I hate Interlaced!!
Why Sony is still offering INTERLACED on its cameras really baffles me.
I don’t care about NTSC or PAL or whatever – Interlaced should become history, and the sooner we forget about it, the better.
I just looked at the “RAW” video and saw the horrible interlacing before reading you post….
totally agree, Die Interlace, DIE!
Urhmmmm… is it really necessary to post anything from anyone? I mean really… when Canon launched the 5DMKII, they put the first video in the hands of a highly respected professional Vincent Laforet to make a very nice promo with. It’s a bit cheap and embarrassing for Sony to allow such crappy use of this video be the first impression for a landmark product like the NEX-7. This video made me vomit in my mouth a little bit… choak!
Personally, I will avoid clicking these links until a working professional gets their hands on one and has a script to make an intelligent promo from.
Poor taste SonyAlphaRumors… show a little class and let somebody else be first with promoting the crap. You don’t have to show it first, just because it’s “first”. Exhibit some taste please.
I just put my SD card in the A77 and the NEX-7. The cameras were standing around there, indeed protected against theft. But with some fiddling you could put a card in there. I’ve tried to make a few photos and a video. In the final firmware, the camera can record at 24Mbit 50p (60p in the U.S.). The Sony employee also told me that in firmware 0.03 (!!) not even the user interface is finished.
0.03 ? … OMG… We’ve already seen 1.02 !
The A77 firmware at ifa was 1.02 but the NEX-7 firmware was 0.03
admin,
you have mentioned that you will buy nex7 due to its mirrorless might improve the IQ. but, just curious in the past, we do have A55(SLT) vs nex5(mirrorless), so far is there any different in term of IQ? if nex7 have better IQ i will also consider it..
btw, w/o the mirror, how the nex7 evf draw the light…?
The NEX-5n and a55 share a similar sensor, not the NEX-5. There has shown to not be a significant quality drop with the mirror, but the light gathering capabilities are reduced due to a 1/3 stop leas light on the sensor.
The image for the EVF come straight from the sensor, the 30% light is to drive the AF system not the EVF. As the NEX does AF on the sensor using CDAF it doesn’t need the mirror.
High ISO should be better on the NEX due to the extra light. Some have complained of ghosting on the a55 (at least).
does anyone know:
1. is there any remote control device accessory for start/stop in video recording?
2. what will happen when recording in video mode, and then remote control activate shutter to snap…?
admin,
can you enable right click function for the comment button, so we could open the comment page in tabs and can visit many pages at simultaneuosly
Honestly then, this is fairly pointless
A video from such a premature firmware tells us nothing at all
No wired remote… SONY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
Those IR units stink! They always delay and I’ve tried four different brands. The switch on them does not provide two stage button for AF then Shoot. Always a delay, never an immediate shot like wired remote.
PLEASE PLEASE put a USB wired remote on the market for this NEX or release a white paper so someone else can. And give us tethering for GAWDS sake! A photographer should not have any issues whatsoever with how to fire a camera.
No wired remote for video? OMG WHAT ARE YOU THINKING SONY?
Hey look Sony… Here’s a wired USB remote for Olympus Pen.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Remote-Shutter-Release-Olympus-PEN-EP-1-EP-2-E400-E410-E420-E510-E520-DC47-/330611977764?pt=AU_Cameras_Photographic_Accessories&hash=item4cfa026e24#ht_5922wt_882
Not so hard to do. The person who creates this for Sony NEX will sell millions of them. See, it has a two stage button for AF then Shoot, and a hold for Bulb. It can be used in any drive mode without having to go into IR mode and single frame only. It doesn’t use a battery and it doesn’t waist camera battery by keeping the LCD and IR sensor on. No delay when shooting either. And hey, it can be used from any angle outdoors without the possibility of some other Sony IR firing it. Please make one Sony. This is a basic necessity. How can I reliably fire IR remote from behind your camera when your sensor is on the front. Don’t be clumsy Sony. Be smart like Olympus Pen.
It is nice to see the first working anything from Nex 7.
Raw video file seems did not show much surprises
– autofocus seems to work well and extremely fast.
– video resolution as per my perception is about average 600-700 lines, seems lower then panasonic TM900 HD camcorders (1000 lines).
– noise suppression effective. But noise level from the matrix seems also be quite high. It could be seen at the places of the screen with a lot of small objectas (flowers etc) – the compression artifacts and noise pattern are noticeable.
