    1. After examining the ARW-file header I would say v1.02.
The A77 sensor does not seem to better than A55 or NEX-5N when it comes to noise. But the A77 have other strengths, so I will almost certainly buy it.

  1. Maybe it’s Lucky? About one week ago Hong Kong’s Sony showroom has already place a A77 kit set and open for the public to have a test, it’s a quite nice model and able to have a match with EOS 7D & D300S/D7000. success or not? time will tell. (But my heart has fall into the NEX-7 already..)

I’ve ask some of my vendor friend about A77 long time ago… they said will avaliable at 23-SEPT instead…. but anyway , it’s just a 1 day margin , 22-SEPT is official available date for sure!

  2. Then you can get one on ebay.uk from those HK sellers. Just about 4 days’ shipment. But without warranty LOL.
BTW: How do you like your 5N?

  3. Please, I am going to be in HK on the first week of OCT. Just don’t spread the word about it availability yet until I have decided to buy it or wait till FF camera. If not, I am afraid they will run out of a77 bodies when I arrive there 😀

      1. Yes but it will be bad if I decide to buy it then but the shop say sorry no stock due to pre-orders. I definitely visit a sony store and will try my STF lens with it. Looking forward to it.

        1. you could buy it at the showroom instead , i remember you’ll get something more instead of buying at the vendor outside.

the price of new camera should be the same at that time, so if the A77 could Poisoning you , please at the antidote at the showroom , hohoho

          1. I wonder if they make you buy it with some kind of package like they do with Playstations when supply is tight.

Actually that’s more likely with NEX-7, since that will probably sell in larger volumes – it’s the kind of camera every loves – pros wanting a compact (second) body, advanced amateurs, rich hipsters, Leica lovers etc…

  4. Firmware 1.02, I cant’ process the files to JPEG (trouble with the RawTherapee) but first impressions are: lots of noise. Still.
There seemes to be lots od detail though so maybe it will be better with Lightroom…
Second impression: lots of purple (actually green 😀 ) fringing (look at the ends of the pettel), and even ISO 100 looks kind of blurry.

    1. Yep, I think JPEG engine from pre=production firmware can do better than this. Not sure it is Raw Theraphy fault or the photographer.

      1. RAW converters treat noise dependend on the camera model and there are no profiles for the Alpha 77 yet. So the programs don’t have the right algorithms to deal with the noise characteristics of it. Wait until Adobe releases CR an LR updaete with profiles for the A77.

By looking on the RAWs without any Noisereduction i would say scaled down to the 16.2 Megapixels its better than A55 an you have the possibility to use the 24 MP if you need it.

  5. Just a hint: Capture One (newest version 6.3) also has preliminary support for A77 and NEX-7 (color profiles are not final, but files open!). You can download a 30-days test version on website of Phase One 🙂

  6. I live in Hong Kong and I’ve tried it out. It’s ISO performance did not improve significantly compare to A55…maybe it’s really a bit over-killing in pixels.

  7. people are cruing over poor high iso performance. The camera isn’t even out yet so no comment can be made legitimately.
plus what is the use of iso 10000+ anyway? Hardly anyone will use this, ever!
from previous iso comparison we saw that iso 6400 was more than fine! This is a useful iso.

    1. >plus what is the use of iso 10000+ anyway? Hardly anyone will use this, ever!

I never understand comments like this. People will use what looks good. Make 128,000 look good & I’ll use it all the time! :o)

  8. you can open files with Picasa – press the “i feel lucky” button, then “save” the file on jpg. (which gives you a 12-13mp file). open those files in LR3 and edit as much as you can. colors & WB are a bit off but you can see already in Picasa and after LR3 edit noise is really acceptable to very good even at 12800. i’ll say noise at 3200 is very very low – and when a proper raw software will be out there i think 6400-12800 will be also very low noise after right process. i’ll upload later on for you to see

  9. Firmware shows v 1.02 in FastStone so I assume it’s production firmware.
Not very good subject matter to judge noise/resolution by.
Shot with Sony 50mm 1.4 @F2 so very thin DOF.
Probably all hand held because perspective changes an tilts between pictures so focus point not the same.
Shot in A priority with 1/60 @ ISO 100 all the way up to 1/8000 @12800
Mono tone picture picture of white flowers on beige background in dim light.
Very little detail to be seen @ ISO 100 due to shallow DOF and slow 1/60 SS

Now this picture I am impressed with:

    http://digineff.cz/obrdg2011/fotaky/sony_a65/sony_a65_06.jpg
    ISO 80 85mm @1/250 F13 v1.00
Detail in fabric is very good.
Beautiful girl/gorrilla that is in serious need of some electrolysis.

    1. I think there’s no need of being rude toward this lady. She’s a nice woman. And not all women are made of plastics (luckily).

      1. I wasn’t trying to be rude just humorous.

Sorry if my remark was too politically incorrect for you or this board.
I did say she was beautiful and in real life no one would ever take notice of facial hair but we live in an age of Hi Def as the resolution of that A77 shot points out.

        1. No problem. At least we all agree that she’s beautiful. So she doesn’t have to worry if she reads this board.. (not that I bet!) ^^

        2. 🙂 All the girls I know hate to see their own photos when blown up to pixels level. Doesn’t matter if it’s 4 megapixels or 24. They all will say EWWW! delete that! or you better photoshop and make my skin smooth xD hahaha

        1. Without waxed hands? Hardly. Probably GF of reviewers or just friend.

Though it does have a really good ammount of details..

          1. It has good amount (typo at first post) of details, but compared to A900 studio shot it looks like crap. 😀

    2. John,
The photo in the link you’ve provided is was actually taken with the A77.
If you take a look at the EXIF, you’ll see.

      1. But the focus is off, this is the ..th picture I see with bad focus: the left cheek is sharp the eyes however are blurry (looking at a picture like this gives me headache as I try to keep focussing MY eyes to get it sharp, which is impossible). I hope it’s photographers error, but there are many out of focus/bad focussed examples around by now. By the way this is fw 1.00 and fw 1.02 is quite lot better from what I have seen.

          1. The link for the shots with firmware v 1.02 was given at this forum some time ago (I forgot the header but I downladed them 10 days ago so you could look around there).

Well, the shot is really out of focus you wouldn’t want to make one like that I’m sure.

    3. It is a normal pleasant girl which you can meet on the street. And yes there are plenty of details but you can’t see it on that street because you would put your nose directly to her skin!

  10. this is the 2nd. or 3rd. RAW batch which i see there is a faulty/strange defect on the right side of the pictures running from top to bottom – a vertical line 1mm wide – seems like from the sensor!!!

    1. While I’m sure that Raw Therapee’s A77 support isn’t finalized and up to where it should be, you do realize that the demoisaicing of raw programs like Raw Therapee and Raw Photo Processor are superior to the likes of ACR, don’t you? I use LR3 for quick processing and sorting, but I send anything important out to Raw Photo Processor. The difference is stunning.

  11. *URGENT HELP*

Have somebody from Canada bought something from Adorama? I wanted to know more about fees, customs, carriers, how long it takes, etc.

I didn’t really understand how it works when the package cross the board, if it stays in customs if the process takes long, etc.

I’m not from Canada, so I’ll ship it to a Hotel and time is not my friend.

If some good soul could help me, I appreciate.

    1. I live on the west coast (Canada) and I got a $125 teleconvertor delivered the next day. About $25 in HST and customs. The customs work is done ahead of the package arriving and you have to pay the customs/brokrage fees upon delivery.

  12. Photos were taken hand-held, with Sony 50mm 1.4@2.0 (maybe PF is from lens…), iso 100 @ 1/60 ! + stabilization … with a350 I got crispy and detailed shots… I’m not satisfied with IQ for now… but with LightRoom and new firmware… it will be good…

a77 is really great camera (I’ll be buying x2), but it needs some tweaks … and official Adobe support…

    1. Thank you for the upload Adam. Two a77s! Double wielding. Great idea. Always good to have a backup body. I planned on filming with mine, having two points of view of the scene with matching quality is preferred. I could have used my a33 for the second body but only if I had to. I ordered one for now from Sony USA. If i get it by first week Nov I’ll be thrilled.
I think I’ll schedual time off just to travel with mine.

  13. i live in europe, can we use the cams from hong kong here without any problems? i.e do they shoot 25p/50p overe there? i believe they have the same electrical system as us (50 hz) but i’m not sure..

    1. I’ve ordered from two HK stores before. Onestop digital were excellent. Very well packaged, arrived to the UK in two days (ordered Monday afternoon.. arrived Wednesday morning!)

Also ordered from digitalrev. Overall not a good experience the twice I’ve used them. Both times my items were ‘held by customs’ and I paid £50 release fee. The delivery company call and say its held and I paid over the phone. Yet when I checked, my card was billed to the delivery company, not HMRC. No customs sticker on the box. No receipt. No proof of any sort that it had been stopped or billed by customs.

I’ve had items stopped by customs before. They always stamp the box to say it was stopped. Another stamp when it is released. And you get a receipt to say that you’ve paid.

I think digitalrev and the company just add a little extra for themselves.

  14. I opened the ISO100 ARW file in RawTherapee (I don’t care about high ISO but I do care about clarity and resolution). Unfortunately, my expectations have been confirmed.

As the A55/A580 comparisons have shown, the SLT mirror reduces resolution and can cause some purple fringing. It was said earlier, that the mirror costs you some 3% resolution. But what’s 3% on a 24MP sensor, you have plenty of resolution anyway, right?

The problem is: these 3% will not result in a 23.3 MP image instead of a 24 MP image. Instead, you’ll get a blurry 24 MP image.

24 MP is a lot for APS-C anyway. You need excellent lenses, and obviously even the 50/1.4 isn’t up to that task.

    1. Mike, 50mm lens stopped down at 5.6 is sharp as a ninja sword. Plus, why is everybody making comments about pic quality of a77 not ready for store shelf ?

      1. A RAW file is a RAW file. This will not change in the final product because sensor development has long been finalized. We might see improvement in JPEGs due to firmware changes but the RAW quality will not change.

Yes, the 50mm might not be very sharp at F2. Let’s hope I was somewhat premature in my judgement…

  15. I’ve preordered the A77 + kit lens from my local Sonystore in Brisbane (Australia) which is also due in the same last-week-of-September timeframe. I have to say, though, they’re screwing us on price down here, though I’m sure it will drop readily enough.

I’m told the RRP here for the body+lens kit is AU$2799 – thankfully I’ve got a good relationship with their sales manager (been selling me kit for years) so they knocked $400 off that price straight away without me having to ask. Works out close to the same as buying one from B&H or HK at US$1999 with GST on import and freight with Fedex. The generous immediate discount suggests there’s a bit of profit margin in it if you’re buying in Australia.

As for those sample images, I think the lack of finesse displayed in the images themselves suggests the camera was in the hands of a techhead, not a photographer and possibly on full auto. I can get better quality images than that out of my first ever Sony DSLR (A350) in cruddier light without even trying and we’re all familiar with the limitations of that camera.

  16. So far it looks like chunks of the world (Aus, Korea, HK, UK) are getting the a65/a77 a good month earlier than the US/Canada…which is certainly odd.

  17. Hi there, You’ve done an excellent job. I will definitely digg it and personally recommend to my friends. I am confident they will be benefited from this website.
