Debunking rumors: No Otus A-mount prototype is around yet :)

PDNonline wrote that they tested the A7/A7r with “the so-new-it’s-still-a-prototype Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 (via the LA-EA3 adapter)“. If true this would mean they had an A-mount Otus Prototype in their hands! But guess what…this isn’t true. They just confused the Metabones EOS adapter with the LA-EA3 adapter 🙂

    1. Why would anybody care about the name if this is the best normal lens ever build?
I personally like the fact that Zeiss gives their lenses (or the series) names rather than just naming it “Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Distagon T* Lens for Canon EF Mount”. Everybody will know what you’re talking about when you say Otus or Touit. And owls have one of the best and sharpest eyes of all animals, so for me this all makes sense. Maybe it’s because I’m German though 😛

  1. This lens would achieve greatness if released for Sony a-mount bodies. The IBIS and focus peaking would make it the best option for using this lens (particularly handheld).

  2. After the lens is released and demand for the Nikon and Canon mounts are met, realistically it shouldn’t be an issue to release an a-mount version given the close ties that Sony and Zeiss have with one another. Sony is probably Zeiss’s best client and Sony need not worry about this lens competing with any of their current lens offerings. Even though it is a specialty lens at this price, it would engender a lot of good will from a-mount users to see the Otus lens series being released for their mount.

      1. Not going to happen unless Sony Zeiss makes it, Zeiss would just give you this answer “we build this lens with only one purpose in mind, to have the best image quality wide open and thoroughout the aperture range, an autofocus system will require moving elements which is against this product philosophy in providing the best image quality”

      1. This. But is it really an issue?

These lenses are manual anyways, so you could just use a dumb adapter from Nikon F to A. It seems kind of pointless to me to buy an all manual non-weather sealed lens for A mount even if it was available, esp. given that there is a lot of uncertainty in the future of A-mount.
You would have to buy a high-quality adapter but in turn you get a lens that you can probably use on most SLRs that will ever be released during the rest of your life (EF and F mount will most probably be longer around than A-mount).

        1. Agreed, not that much of an issue. This is why I am interested to see what this new family of manual lenses by Zeiss would be. I hope they will be small.

    1. Unlikely to be cheaper, most likely it’ll be the same price and if anything, it’ll be more expensive for A mount due to the volume of A mount users compared to Nikon or Canon is way less.

  3. What I don’t understand is, why Zeiss didn’t build the Otus with interchangeable mount, ala the Zeiss Compact Prime series. Makes sense to me, since the sales volume of these lens would probably be very low and to pay that much only to be entrenched in a specific vendor mount?

  4. Zeiss put a lot into E mount AF Touit APS-C lenses (well. a lot for Zeiss), only to be met with Sony moving to FF for the mount. I would suspect Zeiss would need to clearly see where A mount is going before even considering devoting resources to this mount as well.

    1. Perhaps Zeiss will have insider insight regarding Sony lens plans cause they are partners after all.

They were quick to announce that they’ll be making manual FE lenses with long focus throw and more information will be provided next year. So I guess they know about Sony plans to a certain extent?

  5. Just more proof that A77 users have been forgotten. look at the Sony lens map for first 3year of A7/r it gets 8-15 official lenses plus Zeiss. First 3 years of A77 ? Well I relay like my 16-50 but that’s all we got.

  6. I hear this lens is so sharp that your actually able to crop in and see peoples souls. It’s better than punching dead people. It’s that amazing- it’s like going from a wheelchair to having fairy dust sprinkled on you and flying. Get ready to beg dazzled.
