  1. What if you own Sony but also Canon and Nikon? Will it see you are a Sony user but also process those or, only Sony? (Which would be useless.)
The purpose of a brand specific RAW/DAM software like this seems idiotic. Free or not.

    1. It probably only reads Sony RAW files. And why is it idiotic? Nikon NX-D only reads Nikon files, my guess is Sony wants to be perceived as a serious camera manufacturer hence partnering with Phase One

      1. I have been using C1 Express, then Pro 7 for my Nikon D300 files, just upgraded to C1 Ver 8.
A seriously good RAW conversion with excellent detail and colors. You Sony people are being given a GREAT deal. I had to pay for mine… 😉 Good for Sony. Nikon only issue NX-D with a horrid interface, getting rid of Capture NX2, much to users chagrin. The reason the Pro version is better is that is has local adjustment brushes and also allows more detailed color rendering adjustments. Worth the little bit extra (for you Sony people) a lot extra for others (though reduced somewhat from last years prices. Excellent software. I just hope that they DO NOT stop offering the perpetual license, even if they allow subscription.

        1. I don’t get your point… Do you nerd the complete one? You Buy it… Do nikon amd canon bundled software open other raws? No.
If you are a sony camera owner… They gift you this in replace of bundled software. Sony paid or made some sort of agreement for her customers (the pro uograde for sony costa Just 24 euro… So Why They should care of other brands? Phasr one will do her offers for her multipurpose clients. This is obviously an agreement between them.

    2. So I am not sure what Phase One and Sony were thinking. Let’s see. Maybe they thought all the images, scans and digital, we took before we switched to Sony are garbage unworthy of future management and editing? or; maybe they thought this free program would get us to sell all the other gear/brands we use to also use only Sony? No matter how this crippled freebie is viewed, it is a stupid idea.
They need to sell Sony camera owners the FULL Capture One 8 at a very good price, like 50% off (this has happened in past). That would make a hell of a lot more sense practically and profitably.
With all those formerly happy Aperture users (it was a lot better than you realize and yes I am mad) looking for an Adobe alternative, and many disgruntled Adobe users too, this is a big missed opportunity for Capture One to “capture” much of that business.

  2. Giving this a shot to compare to LR since it’s free. Seems insanely slow so far. 2 minutes to just generate previews on 100 RAWs. That’s done in LR in like 5-10 seconds

      1. An i5-2400 with 8GB of mem. Once I got by the slow previews I’m actually fairly impressed, especially for the cost. I can’t see switching from LR but if someone was starting out or didn’t have RAW software already this would work very well

        1. What GPU are you using and I guess you’re running it on Windows?

Most likely cause you’re not using OpenCL yet, cause once you do, it’ll smoke LR

  3. Anyone know if this is really free or just a time limited trial. The way Admin says ‘Free (!)’ above makes it seem as though it may not really be free…and totally free.

  4. I clicked on the link from this site and then got the download only after I had given my mail adress. How do they know I am a SONY customer ? I assume now anyone can download this SONY EXPRESS version for free right ?

  5. Wow…very impressive sharpening and color rendering. All I did was import a raw file from my A7R, applied some sharpening and exposure and violet…perfect…seriously crushed the OOC jpg.

  6. I’ve been a beta tester for the last 2 months and it’s been amazing. I also just got a 10% off code to share! Use this code: AMBJOE

  7. One of my favorite features on Capture One that you can’t get with Lightroom is Focus Mask, which is like Focus peaking, but on your computer. Great way to check which area is in focus, especially when you’re tethering and images are coming in.

    1. I tried Capture One a couple of years ago and, when converting from RAW to Jpeg, I found the sharpness great but I could not get over the slight darkening and the pinkish cast it applied to all my pics. The colours just were not neutral and I found myself backing away from it.

I have just loaded and tried the new Sony free version and find exactly the same. A too warm cast and slight darkening of the pictures when converting from RAW to Jpeg.

      Any comments ?

  8. Does it maintain the ooc jpg colour with better noise control? If yes, then great, with ACR I am always sad about destroying the great ooc colours of my A77…! Can’t test it right now…

  9. Camera Tethered Support
    • Phase One IQ150
    • Leaf Credo 50
    • Sony A7, A7R, and A7S
    • Sony A99 and A77 II
    • Sony a5000 and a6000
    • Nikon D810

    Finally

  10. I have purchased PRO version for Sony for $30.00 and I do consider it as a steal !!! Capture One is excellent edition to DxO / Lightroom.
