I am ready to order my A99 mk2 then
sony product announcement on 9/2 in berlin
I’m just not ready to dish for 3k for it. If they do make it, it’s going to be interesting to see if they will use the new 42mp sensor or use their 36mp and include that crap SLT. With this new sensor there really isn’t a need for that crappy SLT mirror if they can slightly improve the AF over the A7rii. I wish camera makers would consider making cameras that are geared towards photographers and not photographers/cinematographers. I can’t believe that there’s such a demand for people that use their cameras for serious video work. But I guess this is just me ranting about features that I’ll never use.
Are the photos sizes limited?
Or when you buy a NAS, like Synology DiskStation.
So let’s see … if I buy an A7rII for US $3200, Amazon will charge me $224 in tax. Couldn’t I get that same “free” service” for much less than $224?
Exactly.
Alternately, you can also get this with a Prime subscription.

I ran some test in June this year and found the software to upload is very slow. It would not upload folders, just pictures in one folder. So I would have to upload folder by folder. It is just not ready for prime time.
thislife.com gives you unlimited storage all the time for all of your photos including raw, without purchasing anything and the uploader is great in that it does smart deduplication, will monitor folders, and is fast.
I’m still not sure what it is exactly that you’re supposed to get with ‘cloud’ storage.
Basically you can put your pictures there for a year, which costs you nothing. Then, unless you pay, your pictures will no longer be stored there. So, after one year and one month it hasn’t cost you anything, but nor have you got anything to show for it. Can anyone please tell me the point of that?
This whole idea of cloud storage is a nonsense other than a very short term safety net. Even then there are limitations.
If you are someone, or some organisation, that needs file sharing then it could prove useful, but for anyone else it is an albatross around your neck.
Let me first say I’m not talking about Amazon because I’ve tried their service and it’s crap. But in terms of good cloud services:
It’s a reliable backup solution for those who need it and solves the issue and risk of traveling while working with media.
When your income becomes based around a bunch of spinning platters or chunks of metal that could be damaged you get squirrely about backups.
Also makes collaborating and delivering finished work easier.
Some points you make are correct, partly, but I don’t think they are enough to justify cloud storage in the way it is sold.
First, it’s not a reliable backup. Mechanically and electronically it may be a lot more resilient than a ‘home-based system’, but it is only as reliable as the funds to keep paying and that could be just as open to a disaster!
I grant that it is certainly reduces particular elements of risk while travelling, but that assumes you can always find a quick and secure means of uploading; the very nature of some trips means this will not be universal by a long way.
With regard to protecting your work, the majority will likely have achieved its full earning potential very quickly but, for longer term, simple multiple copies is an easy safeguard and doesn’t need ‘the cloud’. Nothing will protect from a complete disaster, but that applies to anything.
File sharing is a very handy tool, but there are already facilities for that and the more you have sharing the more the risk for something unpleasant.
I won’t deny that ‘the cloud’ has its place and its uses, but this idea that it is some super addition to our lives is a complete myth just to sell a service.
You are making this dramatically more complicated than it needs to be. It’s a useful service for people like me. Obviously not for you. Chill.
I am chilled and you’re right, it’s not complicated.
It’s completely useless for almost everyone and a huge con. Simple!
