Zeiss product release event by end of this week (Diglloyd). Wide angle Otus and Loxia coming?

loxia-35mm

On Friday (9am Berlin time) Sony will announce their new (FF?) E-mount camcorder. But there will be another announcement from Zeiss too: Diglloyd confirmed that Zeiss will have a product announcement by end of this week. And we can really hope this is where we will also see the announcement of the new wide angle Loxia FE lens! Knowing Zeiss the lens will have one of the specs “Borrowed” from the ZM series:

There are rumors “saying” there will be also a new Otus wide angle lens. There will be no new Batis and no new Touit lens this year.

  1. My guess would be the 21mm Biogon or the 15mm Distagon. I think the 18mm Distagon would be perfect but the market seems to prefer speed over size even for ultra-wide angles.

      1. It wouldn’t be a smart move since all they wont is to sell, but a 15 2.8 would be a lot more pretty and I could star saving now in oder to buy it next year.

      1. For Nikon and Canon. I’m sure this WA is going to be huge. Sony FE users already have wide angle lenses (loxia, Batis, and Sony zeiss) that are much smaller

        1. Otus is maual lenses, adapts perfectly to E-mount, the size is so enormous an adapter does not make much difference.Otus for E-mount would be same size as Otus and adaptor anyway. But hey, we got Batis and Loxia, not bad at all …

  2. I’ll be happy if and when Zeiss ever gets the Batis lenses out to those of us who have been waiting ( not so patiently any longer). On the other hand, who does’t like the excitement of a new product announcement, particularly concerning a wide angle. Not so sure about an Otus price tag though….although given the Batis experience, I’ll probably have more than several months to save up for any new Zeiss product I might be interested in.

    1. The ZM 2.8/25 has excellent resolution, an equally excellent Loxia 2.0/25 would make me nervous… 🙂 might be bigger than the existing loxias.

  3. Yeah, they should come out with another Batis so they can leave all the major online sites backordered. . . . . Because we all love when someone can’t even provide the goods to take my money.

  4. As regards Zeiss, if your rumour is accurate, I don’t see either having much appeal.

I’m sure they may well be a welcome addition for a few and I’ll be happy for them, but the Otus will be far too expensive for most and the Loxia will lack AF.

    1. Agreed. But Batis must wait :/ and based on the trend with loxia, we might have to wait for another year before we see the next Batis

    2. With the wide angle Batis we already have an AF standard wide angle lens.

If the Loxia will become my desired 18mm, I actually don’t care about AF.

    3. I never understood why AF is needed at wide angles beyond 24mm … Loxia 18 or 21 mm will be verry welcome, I just hope they keep the relative compact design, even if the consequences is limited speed.

  5. Zeiss on the move to generate more singularities in our pockets! Now, if only Sony will announce the promised 6 lenses by end of this year hmm..

  6. I will only buy native lens now so I hope they bring a lens thats not already on the line up like something wider than 20mm. I’ve used 3rd party lens and I just don’t like it. I just feel like I’m not getting the most out of it because I’m missing a lot of camera features like focus magnification, AF stuff like eye focus among other things.

      1. I tried it with the Minoltas I have, I don’t think it worked. I’m going to try it again! Also, sometimes when you connect lens onto the sony LAEA4 adapter, it doesnt properly connect and you don’t get no AF functionality. Also, my 70-210 goes kind of wonkers and the AF when connected, just keeps searching for focus without me ever having to turn on continuous focus or holding the focus button.

        1. Don’t know which camera you have but it sounds like you have Full Time AF set to ON. It is probably doing the same thing with other lenses as well, but you don’t notice because they focus internally and are silent. Go through the menus and look at every Focus setting. Full time AF is set to ON by default and needs to be switched OFF. It saves a lot of power as well, extending your battery life.
The peaking needs to be set to one of the Custom Buttons. The Focus Magnification can also be set to a custom button and helps you to nail focus perfectly.

    1. There’s a 35 and 50, and although I’d like to see something 15-18’ish, would rather have the important 21-28 range covered first. I bought into the Loxia because of the ability to automatically engage focus assist with manipulation of the focus ring, but found that it was distracting and now just use C1 to engage when needed.

  7. If it’s a 18 or 21mm loxia coming, I’ll hit the preorder button so quick my wallet won’t stand a chance to protest … and I might add a 35mm loxia too, before my brain tells me to start thinking again …

    1. Loxia 21 mm is to close to Batis 25mm. But if it is a Loxia 18mm. Then i just may skip my planned 15mm Samyang buy

  8. Using A7s sensor in the camcorder would be the easiest and most profitable way to get it up to 4k with great iso capabilities. However, given Sony’s recent trend in upgrading sensor tech, you have to wonder if there’ll be something new in this model.

      1. No, not the wrong topic. The first sentence says: On Friday (9am Berlin time) Sony will announce their new (FF?) E-mount camcorder.

  9. I doubt Zeiss will reuse wideangle design as that involves very big tradeoff in Image Quality on most A7 cameras – lack of detail, false color to name a couple….

    1. Not true, they just have to incorporate the sensor glass thickness in the lens calculations. Same as with the other Loxias.

      1. Cover glass seems to be responsible for corner smearing but not false color nor vignetting. Some more intelligent redesign is needed for wide-angle Loxia to work with the 7 line.

    1. “We are expanding the ZEISS Otus (F and EF Mount Full Frame) and ZEISS Loxia (E-Mount Full Frame) lens families and will introduce a new lens family this autumn.”
In the interview he says that Zeiss is introduce a new lens family… This autumn… Could be a quite interesting autumn indeed …

      1. And to think that it wasn’t long ago people were lamenting “Sony FE has more bodies than lenses” Now we have Sony, Zeiss and soon third parties designing FE lenses. It’s getting interesting to say the least.

        1. well, they did not say the new lens family is Emount … So there will still be more bodies than lenses for another year or so … Not so important really, as long as Zeiss and Sony (Zony?) gives us the right lenses.

      2. One can only speculate what focus this new family of lenses will have. I doubt it will be long tele zooms for sports or nature, this is traditionally not something Zeiss do. And if they did, they would be ridiculously pricey (and good). Maybe a series of small E-mount cine primes in the area between Loxia and CP.2? There are some E-mount camcorders (VG and FS series) that would benefit from such a lens type. And the A7x too of course.

    1. I agree. Dedicated mirrorless FF cine primes, (primarily E-mount) is my guess too. Think Veydra, but for FF in Zeiss flavour. $1500-$2000 each.

      1. Interesting idea. CP.2 but optimized for FE… CP.2 has 114mm diameter, great for natively fitting to “compact” matte boxes, but throwback to large PL lenses, maybe an overall diameter of 80mm (77mm thread) common diameters and lengths. Geared focus and aperture rings with long throw focus, no need for non-clickless aperture, T1.5 or 2.1 throughout range would also be nice. T* coatings to match CP.2 range for color accuracy. Electronic contacts to report focal length and iris. I love my Loxias, but biggest issue is the changing length through the focus throw and the rather severe focus breathing. Everything else is near perfect (other than the limited lineup).

        1. Hmmmm… I’m listening 🙂
The really bad focus breathing is what kept me from getting the Loxias. If the size could somehow be kept down to the Veydra-ish housing these will spell out a new era for the mirrorless video! Run-n-gun dream machine with a7xx.

    1. I want a suprise…something to get really excited about. How’s a loxia 11mm F4 sound. Sounds good to me!

  10. If love to see a 21mm Loxia but concede that a more mainstream 28mm will likely precede it by a few years. 🙂

  11. Did Barry get the notice?……

“For those who didn’t get it: Canon will release a 120MP full-frame DSRL.” – Canon rumors.

  12. How come Zeiss can pump out lenses but Sony cannot ? i wish Sony produced more E and Fe Sony branded lenses – at least few that where under $1000

  13. Why do they wanna produce a manuel 25mm f.2,0, when they already have the lovely Batis 25 mm f.2,0

    1. if you give me the chance to choose between those two, Ill get the loxia right away. There are manual shooters too…
