A77II does Football World Cup. And also does kill the Nikon D7100 and Canon EOS 7D in terms of speed :)

How Fast Is the Sony Alpha A77 II? from Photo-John on Vimeo.

For current (or future) A77II camera owners. Here is soemthing for you:

Imaging Resource posted that video comparing the speed of the new Sony A77II vs the Nikon D7100 and Canon EOS 7D. And it’s impressive to see what the A77II can do! Watch it!

And Pro Photographer Brian Smith used the A77II to shoot some World Cup games in Brazil. Check out his pics at Briansmith.com.

  1. Shouldn’t this new body be compared with Canon’s latest and greatest tech. in the 70D instead of the 7D?

      1. The 70D will be a great camera when Canon fixes the focusing issues, until then I would stay away from it. The A77II beats it handily in image quality, FPS and focusing speed and accuracy. ;D

        1. DxoMark: S/N similar, Dynamic range Sony a little better at low ISOs. So not handily but slightly. Autofocus is another thing, here of course Sony is better, but it’s also newer.

          1. Dude 8fps vs 12fps. The AF system smashes the Canon’s. So he’s right the Canon’s have been outclassed/owned. When a dude compares your camera to one worth 5x more that’s just awesome.

          2. I’m not a sports shooter, so 6fps are already enough for me. So if it’s 8 or 10 or 11 fps I don’t care. But I have friends who are and they usually shoot at ISO 3200 and above. Here the new A77 doesn’t excel and could therefore be only of limited use for most sports shooters.
However, the autofocus system is great and Sony could use this to generate a FF camera (16MP, for example) having the ability to use higher ISO. Then Sony would have something to really compete if all the lenses comparable to Canikons were available.

          3. The A77II high ISO performance was improved over the A77, image samples look very good for APS-C. The A77II is a stellar performer. And what focal length Canon lens do you have that’s not available for the Sony. Remember the entire Minolta A-Mount lens collection fits the A77.

          4. Yes, was improved, but still can’t overtake the D7100 which is much older (due to translucent mirror) and is only slightly better than Canon’s 70D (which has focusing issues, however). For most casual shooters it’s good enough of course. I just wonder whether it’s too for professionals. For professional sports shooters professional service is of great importance. Does Sony offer to replace lenses fast before events? Are there 300/2.8,400/2.8,500/4,600/4 lenses? Don’t understand me wrong, I don’t want to talk bad about Sony. I’m looking closely on what happens with the A7 line-up as I can imagine a switch or buying into it as a supplementary system.

          5. As I said, I’m not a sports shooter so I don’t own them. Do I have to, to recognise that these options are available for Canikon and widely used (see this years world cup, for example)?

          6. Exactly my point. But putting this tech into a professional FF body comparable to a 1dx, 4d would be something and increase Sony’s reputation, imo.

          7. Putting the a77 ii’s center clutter of 15 cross type AF points on a FF will turn heads of 1D X users who have a 41 cross type AF points spread across the frame?

          8. Only 15 would of course not be enough, you are absolutely right in that. I specifically mean the technology. One thing I would like to have improved in my FF DSLR is the spread of autofocus points. With Sony’s tech in the A77 it should be possible to cover almost the full VF area. That would be cool.

          9. Couldn’t find anything special they’ve done other than cramming more points to the same space. For most lenses it’s impossible to have PD AF points go across the whole frame on FF…

          10. You don’t know about lenses much do you? Canon also has 8-15/4L, 14/2.8L II, TSE 17/4L, 24/1.4L II, 35/1.4L (yes the Sony G is dead to everyone), 40/2.8 pancake, TSE 45/2.8, 50/1.2L, MPE 65/2.8 1-5X, 85/1.2L II, TSE 90/2.8, 100/2.8L IS, 180/3.5L and 200/2L IS.

            Read?

          11. I have HX400V, it’s 1200mm (!!!) and Zeiss, the BEST! And with a BEST Sony sensor! Nikon D4s + 600mm f/4.0 is 35 times more expensive and only half (!!!) as good lens and less megapixies! Sony rules and is stellar performer and with flash!

          12. Still this focusing issue for the 70D is a show stopper, if a camera can’t focus accurately the images will look soft. This is unacceptable in a camera in this price range. Canons first generation of the dual pixel sensor is not ready for prime time. And Cannon is being coy about this problem, so don’t expect a fix anytime soon. Perhaps they will follow Nikon’s process of introducing a new model as in the D600/D610 correcting this manufacturing/design flaw. Not a good thing for current owners who shelled out a lot of money expecting a finished competent product.

          13. Lol DxO also says the a7s is crap in DR compared to the a7r. So are they right or wrong? Or do you just pick whatever that favours your argument?

          14. ? DXO doesn’t say A7s is crap. But regarding this issue read the two articles on luminous-landscape. I think they know what they are talking about. I am not a Canon shooter, but I try to look at measurements if possible and DXO provides those (not the overall score). But I have no problem to be convinced otherwise.

          15. No… DxOMark is far more credible than the jokers at LL. When was the last time Reichmann did a valid test? Problem with DxO is they’re hiding things.

          16. You certainly have a problem to be convinced, as you keep switching the goal posts. First you say how IQ is a little better, when comparing the A77 to the Canons, but it has two stops more of both DR and colour depth at lower ISO and is as good for everything else. When this is pointed out to you, somehow you find a significant high ISO advantage for the D7100, when it is actually negligible and then switch to pro service issues. Then you discard the fps, because you don’t use them, although you are not a sports hooter, but explain how a friend of yours shoots at ISO 3200, so it is important. You are throwing some very flexible standards at the a77II. And finally you explain how it would be better to be FF. What is your point with all of this?
The simple truth is that the camera is as good or better than Canikon alternatives, whether you call them professional or not.

          17. I think you take my statements out of perspective, as I just answer to comments here I am not d’accord with, irrespective of whether I like the camera or not. I just look at the statement made in the comment. The commenter said the A77 beats it handily in IQ. So I look at measurements (they show simliar S/N ratio, tonal range, at the same measurement position (around ISO 100) there is 1.5ev advantage for Sony, later from ISO 400 on its practically the same) for the same print size. So not bad for an older gen. sensor and the claim of handily beats it is not valid imo, better yes but not leaps and bounds better. Autofocus is another thing, Sony is very good in that.. The comparison above is wrt the D7100, too, and although faster the Sony can’t reach the DR and tonality over the whole ISO range of the D7100 although being new. Just an observation, which is supported by many reviews I read. For many people it seems to be important to have high fps, Sony delivers. But I disagree it to be immediately hailed to be a pro sports camera by fan boys, as you often have to shoot at high ISOs indoor and here the A77 is probably not the camera to choose. And I disagree it to be better than a 1dx of Canon (look at the measurements, the only thing to be better is DR below ISO300.). That’s why a FF with 16MP and the autofocus system of the A77II would make sense, as you get subject separation and high ISO and fast autofocus and Sony would be able to compete with CANIKON in a sensible area for them. But you need the lenses and service to do so, in my opinion. If Sony has the lenses and provides pro service, I’m happy to change my opinion.
So as you see I just give answers to the comments and agree/disagree, without trying to be overly enthusiastic. Doesn’t mean I dislike the A77ii. For me, however, it isn’t important to have 12fps, for others it may and I know people who care. In case you are interested, I don’t shoot Sony, I have D610, XT1 and EM1 and almost went with the A7r, when I heard about the vibration issue. But an A8r could be very intersting if Sony provided a) 85/1.8 or 135/2 b) 100mm macro lens. As I don’t know what happens to the A-mount in the future this is not an option to me. I apologise if some of my comments are experienced as rude, as I don’t intend it to be.

          18. Handily means easily. Given that it is as good or better overall (and 1.5 stops is hardly ‘slightly’), I’d say I agree with the original commenter. It is the comparison with the D7100 that deserves the “slightly”. Anyway, it looked like you are comparing a bit all over the place.
Given the current offerings, which are considered to be pro (D7100 and 7D), the a77II is certainly on that level. As a system, agreed, there’s something to be said about specialist lenses and pro support, but in the end, pro means simply making money with the camera. The a77II certainly is capable of that.

          19. Up to 2 stops difference in DR (shadow noise) at low ISO, not even accounting for visibly intrusive patterns, isn’t what I would call a little. YMOV.

        1. That’s not Dual Pixel AF. Plus this is a poorly conducted test… accurate or otherwise.

People who’ve never used a slr shouldn’t be taken seriously. Give a 70D to a 5D or a 1D user and they’ll not have any issues.

          1. The auto-focus sucks, whichever one it is. Stop defending this POS, Canon owners are getting screwed. The A 77II beats it in every category, admit it. Toby has every current Canon body, so that excuse is BS.

          2. ROFL Anyone can buy. This test itself indicates the guy is ignorant and doesn’t know how these things work.

Anyway the original point was Dual Pixel AF has the potential to put an end to SLRs for good. Unfortunately Canon will be the last to do it.

  2. Like the man said, “The A77II kicks ass”. Both the 70D, and 7D are obsolete, and poor choices for anyone looking for a modern APS-C set-up for “Sports Photography”, especially teamed up with the fantastic 70-400g2.

  3. It’s good to see real world examples (the world cup shots, not the burst video which is pointless). There is some noticeable noise on the players skin, which is a bit disappointing given how small the shots downsized for web. The a77-2 may be a good budget option for high speed shooting, but it may not be ideal for nighttime events at a high shutter speed.

    1. I’t outperforms everything in i’ts price class, but if your will to spend 4-6 times as much you will get a slight improvement. The night sample shot samples I’ve seen look great so I don’t know what your talking about. Do you have a link to samples to back this up or are you just blowing smoke up our as*e’s?

      1. I’m commenting specifically on the photos via the Brian Smith link (from the above SAR post) with the nighttime World Cup shots from US vs Ghana. Also, you should re-read my original statement.

    2. Brian Smith’s samples are too small to draw conclusions from. The first pic does indeed show something which looks like noise, I agree on that.

      1. The photos at original resolution presumably are much noisier given how much the smaller the photos have been made for the web (shrinking the noise).

Anyway, the a77 still shows significant improvement at high ISO.

      1. The 70D should be compared to the Sony A6x line. It’s not a flagship.

        Sony A3x vs Canon 1x00D
        Sony A5x vs Canon xx0D
        Sony A6x vs Canon x0D
        Sony A7x vs Canon 7D mark X

          1. I was only joking about the class part, you know enough to troll but not much more. A professional Troll Gynotypewriter.

          2. They don’t make sense if the receiver is stupid enough not to understand them.

The 70D is a lower category camera than the A77M2. The latter is Sony’s best offering (=flagship) while Canon’s best offering is the 7D, which will be replaced by the 7DM2 in September. The A77M2 will be competing with the 7DM2. Comparing it to the 70D or 7D is stupid.

          3. The A77 and 70D are in the same price class, neither is the company flagship. Do some research.

          4. 1. The 70D is 900 euros, the A77M2 is 1200
            2. The Sony A77II is Sony’s best camera in the APS-C format.
            3. Do some research.

          5. You, same as many others here, are switching the goal posts. How come the price difference between the 70D and a77II is an issue, but not the the price difference between the 70D and the a6000?

People are comparing the a77II to the 70D, because there hasn’t been a replacement to the 7D. End of story. You don’t invent some comparison, just because Canon hasn’t made an update.

          6. There are no stupid students, only stupid teachers.
            — 2000 year old saying.

  4. Sony’s newest, top of the line APS-C SLT camera is faster than Canon’s 5 years old SLR. By the way the SLR will always have higher shutter which is kinda important for sport shooting.

      1. People say SLT’s have worse ISO performance. However the sensor has the same performance. The degradation comes from the fact that 20% of the light does not hit the sensor. The SLR must compensate the loss of light with higher gain (i.e. higher sensitivity which degrades IQ) or slower shutter time. Worse ISO performance or lower ISO with slower shutter time. They pretty much mean the same. It’s a matter a preference imao. Just let’s say SLT’s have worse low light performance and everyone will understand 🙂

        1. SLTs have worse high ISO when comparing the _same_ sensor to a camera without the “translucent” mirror. However, it seems the A77 II sensor is better than what’s in the 7D or even 70D, as the low light performance is almost equal, but dynamic range and color sensitivity at low ISO is way better in the Sony: http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-SLT-Alpha-77-II-versus-Canon-EOS-70D-versus-Canon-EOS-7D___953_895_619
          See the measurement charts.

Nikon D7100 is better though, but not that much better as when compared to the old A77.
At this point, A77 II plays on a level ground with the others so the difference in high iso is not relevant anymore and anyone choosing a system can focus on other features instead.

    1. If you mean “higher shutter Speed” the contrary is the case. An SLT can be much faster than a SLR, because it saves the time of the mirror flip-up and down.

    2. I need a camera with a higher shutter because I’m only 5’7 and when I shoot tall models in heels I end up looking up their nose…

  5. To the OP: What language! Just because a camera has more speed does NOT mean the other cameras should be trashed. I only see this attitude on Sony forums (here and elsewhere). This goes to show the level of insecurity and photo incompetence that Sony attracts. You have to put everyone else and every other product down, as to build yourself up, and your decision to buy Sony up!

Get real! It is only a camera and lens. If you like your purchase, enjoy it, if you do not dump it. You should not need to keep putting down others to reassure yourself about your Sony choice! Do you see any other product generate this type of animosity? You Sony fan boys and girls stand alone in the consumer world trying to prove to everyone that your decisions (to buy Sony) is correct.

If you Sony fan boys / girls want to ever be taken seriously remember the camera is only a tool, the photographer takes the picture / video. A little more respect for others goes a long way.

    1. While you are right in that this is not a good thing, I am absolutely not with you with “only see this attitude on Sony Forums”. On the contrary, the C and N fanboys are much more aggressive, that *their* System is the only good and serious system. I don’t know which C or N or General Forums you know, but I know only of many snobbish C/N users.

      1. There you said it… “snobbish”. This is your perception. I’m on both sides (and around 10 more) and I haven’t seen anyone being snobby but people perceive snobbery more. It’s all caused by your issues.

Canon/Nikon people don’t sit around talking about how Sony isn’t good. They’re busy forming their wishlists on which lens to buy next because there are too many good ones to get. If they need a pro camera they get a 1D X or a D4(s)… Sony has never competed in that segment for anyone to even consider before bashing.

        1. Ouch, that snob remark really hits close to home Gynotypewriter. Professional Snob/Troll Gynotypewriter, you should get business cards made to that effect.

        2. Read my posting once again. Yes they do… On nearly every photography-related forum I know.
(Yes, I also see their whishlist.)

          1. Not all forums are the same… just like not all seats at the same game are the same. If you go to places like dpreview it’s your fault than theirs.

          2. Ok. So only genotypewriter-approved Forums are good and count for you for your dreamworld of “lovely C/N users and bad S users” 😀 ? Oh my god, that made my day 😀 …

        3. I would disagree. I have seen bashing on almost every not-really-moderated forum I have been at, irrelevant of brand. It’s about people in general, not brands, unless you really believe that Canon (or Nikon for that matter) shooters are somehow more intelligent than everyone else. Which would be ridiculous and snobbish.
I would also dare to be confident in saying that if there weren’t as much trolls explaining how Sony is crap on every corner of the internet, then maybe Sony users would have less of an attitude.

          1. The second paragraph strikes a chord particularly. I have seen a lot of whirlwind negativity against any of Sony’s innovation which expectedly causes celebration among Sony users and fans.

      2. I concede that to you. It has been a while since I have been on camera equipment forums. It is strange that camera loyalty is so weird. I have used many different cameras brands over the years and I never attributed success as a photographer with the brand of camera I was using at the time. If I am fighting with my gear I do not like it, and if the interface is smooth between my mind and getting the camera to do what I want, it makes me happy; and that’s it.

I trained in a working studio with multiple formats and brands, and I never, ever had a master that I was under even talk about gear as a factor in success as a photographer. Only that you use something you are comfortable with, and are able to produce results. Of all the years of apprenticing with top masters, all I ever heard was how I could do a better job on this or that, and they’d teach my what I needed to know. If I needed an additional piece of equipment, I was told (i.e.) to get a wider lens for the sports team group photos, that I was being sent out on. Which brand of gear never entered into it!

      3. I’m not all that tied to brand; have Sony as P&S, Sony Mirrorless which I love but use Nikon DSLR as I’ve owned one since the D100 and have built up an extensive system of bodies and lenses. It is very prohibitive in terms of money loss in switching completely to a rival but may add a body and couple of lens from Rival – if I see something I like in a body.

    2. I have to second that. Sony is very innovative and produces world-class sensors and cameras. But I mentioned before here that words like “kills”, “trashes”, “bashes” … are not necessary. Let the tech speak for itself.

      1. Why not tell it like it is?!? Sony KILLS Nikon and Canon because they will not survive because of Sony competition! No word too strong for how far Sony is ahead of everybody else!

        1. If Sony “kills” Nikon, it is Harakiri. There be few big customers left to buy their sensors! Nikon are not a competitor but a customer.

Canon are the market leaders and everyone tries to get piece of their sales pie.

          1. No, because people buying outdated Nikon and Canon stuff now will buy Sony cameras instead and total sales will be the same or even more. I say more because pros will also replace their outdated lenses with Sony pro lenses.

          2. I hope your optimism is shown with the your money spent on Sony cams. There a few here who blindly keep shouting that Sony are the best without buying any of the hundred new cams they come out with every year. 🙂

Anyone from Japan, please open up your own Sony lens shop. Lots of cash to be made there. 🙂

          3. I have HX400V! 1200mm and Zeiss with flash and stellar performance and not priced like 3 cars!

          4. Yes, it’s the current Sony flagship of the new/future technology cameras. But for people who still have old lenses, the A77II is great. But the future is one lens for everything. I mean 24-1200mm Zeiss! What else would any pro need?

        2. Very hard for Sony to win switchers from and established camera makers Canon and Nikon – only new users, cost is very prohibitive to switch to a rival.

      1. By adding a symbol that says your happy at the end of the sentence only adds to my point. Happy – good! Put others down as part of that happiness – Bad!

    3. This is a Sony fansite. It is about making Sony fans feel good and buy Sony stuff. This is accomplished by hyping everything Sony. Nothing wrong with that, Canon and Nikon amateurs have fansites too!

    4. I can’t believe you wrote this and don’t realize the irony. While Admin might have overdone it with the “kill” word (and that’s just one word), you are so keen on defending a !product!, that you decided to call all Sony !users! ‘incompetent’ and ‘insecure’. You really shouldn’t be telling others how to behave on a forum. Try to fix your own attitude first.

  6. Hard to tell if the video is new or is from 2011 when a77 was launched. It shows nothing that couldn’t have been done in 2011.
    – But then noone really apreciated it 🙂

  7. Not reading through 66 other comments to see if this was mentioned or not… Don’t waste your time with the video, it’s simply a spec (FPS) comparison. I thought it was going to be a speed of AF video which would have actually been interesting and useful. Hearing what 8, 14, and 12 fps sounds like, while impressive, sounds exactly like what I’d think about it – 14 is fastest. *mind blown*

  8. I’d hate to be a Canon user still.
Like the man says, “The A77II kicks @$$”. Canon $7000.00 camera just got owned by an $1199.99 Sony. The A77II is a very agressive move by Sony. Its at least a generation ahead of Canon’s offerings. And the A77III is already indevelopment. It’ll take a miracle for them to catch-up.
And the A88, and A99II will extend that lead in terms of sheer performance.

    1. YES! 1DX and D4s are second-hand junk now and you will see them soon at Disneyland and on lame cruise ship; and A77II at SuperBowl and spacestation and cool stuff! Stellar performance and 3-5 generations ahead I say! And no miracle catchup!

    2. >Canon $7000.00 camera just got owned by an $1199.99 Sony

Why don’t you buy a Nikon V3 then? It has 20fps burst. 8 < 12 < 20. Sony and Canon just got owned by a Nikon. Right? No, not really. This whole "kills" and "owns" garbage is so childish. Choose a system, buy a body and the lenses your work requires and be happy.

My gear is better than yours muhahaha. Just grow up for God’s sake >.<

      1. Your gear is better?!? I have HX400V with Nexmore and 1200mm! So much better than Nikon V3 with stellar performance! And you grow up yourself, you look really young! Like a child!

          1. It’s not that hard:

            1. Take out a fertilized oocyte from it’s mother’s womb
            2. Take DNA sample
            3. Freeze the object
            4. Make an oocyte based on the sample
            5. Fertilize the oocyte
            6. Put the fertilized oocyte into its grandmother’s womb
            7. Wait 10 years
            8. Un-freeze the first oocyte
            9. Put it back into its mother’s womb
            10. Wait 9 months
            11. ???
            12. Profit

          2. 4. -> Not currently possible.
            6. -> Why not any surrogate mother / a younger woman?

      2. I guess he’s touched on a nerve. Canon Trolls are only now realizing their betting for the wrong horse.

        1. So everyone who does not say Sony is the king and everything else s*cks is a Canon troll? Nice.
I bet the only thing you lift is your Sony camera.

        2. Thar guy IS tough. He is smoking a cigarette and drinking coffee. In fact the real tough guys in my hood do actually look like this

    3. Such a stupid and uninformed comment … do you even have any idea that the Canon 1DX is a full frame camera i.e. twice the sensor size of the 77II and the buffer rate totally kicks a$$ of any Sony camera ever mad, including this 77II … even the 7D has better buffer rate. I use 3 Sony cameras and I really like them very much, but I know their limitations and work around them, just like any other camera, weather it be Canon or Nikon. Let’s not get carried away into thinking that a $1200 can out perform a $6000 camera.

  9. What’s all the hype about burst speed ?
Better evaluate tracking AF first, because I would prefer to get 6 sharp frames a second rather than 11 blurred images.
Up to now the A77 Mark 1, which I owe, really sucks in anything else than AF-S..

    1. … and you are a Canikon fan boy coming to the Sony rumors site just to see how good Sony is and wish you can have something like this.

        1. Yeah those problems with spots on the sensor put me off for life! Sorry, was thinking of Nikon. I meant the unforgivable light leak on a pro dslr body. Or was that Canon…

    2. sonyalpharumor is like a hoax : “my sonuy playstation A3123 IIII will kill all your hasselblad with my 21312 fps at 2321312312 ASA!!”

    1. Sony is so awesome! Best camera in the world ever! Everybody at WorldCup is shooting Sony like I am!

  10. The AF performance is the main issue here, not the FPS. The original SLT cameras had problems with focusing on the background.

    1. I have shot some surfing contests at Trestles and Huntington Beach with my Nikon D7100 and D800 and I am typically surrounded by Canon 7D shooters. My cameras really sound lethargic. They could use an energy drink. Late last year I purchased the A77 (also 12 FPS) with Sony 70-400 and headed out to the Wedge. Pretty nice sound with the A77 kicking butt on the 7Ds. Several Canon users even came up to me and asked what was I using with the silver lens. Of course the real reason for speed is to capture every nuance of the wave and the surfer as he rides down the 20 foot face. Sure it’s spray and pray, but for surfing, it really works. With slower bodies, you just miss too much peak action.

    1. Just so incredible and stellar! Much better than D4s and 1DX! Better than any camera in the world except for Sony HX400V which I own and know that it has bestest AF!

          1. Yes, it’s future technology Sony flagship camera. (changing lens is technology from 1850!) HX400V is best camera in the world but expensive, but that’s to be expected for pro machine. H400 model (without super Zeiss) for semi-pro shooters is available.

        1. Yes! 24-1200mm Zeiss! Pro AF and low light 2 generations ahead! Even besterest: stabilization in lens, but lens is in body = both stabilized lens AND in body stabilization! (needid at awesome 1200mm!)

          1. But it’s 1440mm long. Better than 1200mm. It’s the same as pro IPS monitors. 1920x1200mm s*cks balls. You can’t even shoot videos on it, since movies are 16:9, thus the 16 MoviePixies. See? It’s for PRO cinematographers like me. We have the money for PRO glass, you can have your Chinese no-name plastic that you call Zeiss.

  11. Q. How fast does the A77M2 focus.
    A. Fast enough to let me take these out my window:

BTW, I have no idea why they appear twice or what to do about it.

PhotoShop Layers was not used to make these photos. These are as taken by the camera.

      1. The lens I used:
        http://www.amazon.com/Sony-SAL-300F28G-Series-Telephoto-Digital/dp/B000G27GKY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404498181&sr=8-1&keywords=Sony+300mm+f2.8
I have the older one, not the newer more expensive weather proofed one. If I take this lens outside a weather proof bag AND my weather proof backpack are coming with me. At the first sign of rain all photograph stops. The gear is stowed in water proof sealed bags and placed into my backpack.

These Shots where taken from within the house out an open window .

      1. I hear ya and know what you mean. This was particularly true when it using my A900. My yield has gone up considerably since I have been using the A77II.

  12. Typical admin, still posting titles to rile up the fanboys even though you got burned with a previous headline about destroying canon. The only thing getting killed are the sony sales by Nikon and canon with their superior flash systems, service, and lens selection.

Can we some post about lighting techniques, or good composition?

Or is this way over the head of the sony techies?

      1. Truth cannot be killed: Sony rules and is best and pro! And you should not be out taking pictures in thunderstorm anyway. Trust me, I know!

        1. Sony rules for some things, is best for some things and works fine for some pros. And taking pictures in a thunderstorm might be not a great idea, but makes for some amazing shots!

    1. I guess you did not recognize that the hummingbird photos posted just under this are flash? These were taken using five slaved Sony flashes all under control of the pop-up flash built into the A77M2.

      1. The point Kill nikon is probably trying to make is Canon flashes do not overheat like Sony flashguns. It is a major issue on Sony flashguns.

          1. I used two F56 and three F58 flashes. I have experienced shut down of my 58s when I put lithium batteries in them. Don’t do that! I go through a lot of AA batteries…..

          2. I recommend the Panasonic Eneloop Pro in Sony’s flashes. They stay cool to touch even after popping off a hundred shots. Plus you’ll save hundreds of dollars using them.

If you want to ease the pain pickup a Phottix Odin. Its a pricey set-up but even Frank Doorhof is using them. (He’s a newly converted A99/A7r user)

I attached a review below to help you out. I picked up the Odin for my A850, 2x F58, and 2x F42 setup. The performance is good.

  13. So can the 12fps mode actually be used on the A77II or is it a useless headline grabber like on the A77?

    1. I purchased the a77ii after becoming fed up with my Nikon d7100 and its terrible buffer. I have shot Nikon for almost 5 years and I have never had a problem, but ever since I purchased the d7100 I’ve been running into a lot of trouble recently with almost all sporting events I have shot at. I am in no means a pro in this area but some will agree a good buffer is important, especially in raw! Enter the Sony: as soon as I got the camera set up I took it out to my local skate park to see if it was really worth my money, stuck it in the 12fps burst mode in raw and fired away. I think everyone at the park must have thought I was weird because I have never smiled so broadly over my gear since I first viewed my d90 pics on the computer! Man this was a joy to shoot with, not for anything else but just the pure number of sharp images a got without any buffer issues! Af was as good as the Nikon d7100 in tracking from what I could tell and held the subject nicely, but it was almost always sharp with the kit lens – something I didn’t actually expect. If only I could get my 70-200 VR on this! But one can only hope for so much…!

      1. That’s good to hear. I tried the A77 shortly after it came out and thought the tracking was good at 8 fps but pretty awful at 12 fps. Can you control aperture in 12 fps mode or is that still fixed?

        1. Still fixed unfortunately… Also image quality seems to be slightly worse than the Nikon at ISO 1600 and above. I have to say though the substantial number of quality images I got per burst far out weigh these small niggles. I would however like to see better implementation of the AF range control function, it was slow and laggy to use, which, whilst playing with I lost some key shots. Otherwise I think I may be keeping this camera and investing in some of those high quality Zeiss lenses in the near future.

  14. I think the sony could build the best cameras – they are only bullshit, if you cant get any great lenses 😉

  15. the higher framerate (as compared to the 7D) doesn’t really mean it’s faster, only that it does a higher framerate. The A77 did 12fps already. But I think sony improved the buffer capacity on the A77II, right? Still, this comparison could have been done with the A77 with the same comments and it would still be off because while the A77 has a so-so hitrate the 7D at 8fps has very good hitrate and the 1Dx has excellent hitrate. And both have hugely better buffer capacity (if memory serves me right the A77II was improved but not enough to catch the canons, do correct me if I’m wrong).
I was actually hoping to see the A77II outperform the 7D in other areas (like AF speed or time from startup to first registered picture) but hopefully those videos will come later.

It’s not that I don’t like the A77II (I do and I hope it becomes enough of a success to make sony keep A-mount alive and develop new camera models for at least another decade or so), it’s just that I really don’t like this kind of daft comparison

  16. Even in this sequence, you see one shot where the focus hit the ball, the camera’s still guessing a bit. Not to mention a ton of noise/grain on these shots. Though it didn’t intend to, it seems to show off where the A77II still needs to improve more than impress, imo.
