I’m NEVER buying at launch again, all these deals so soon after………
I bought it at launch, now regretting it. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great camera, but damn you sony.
Why would you buy a Sony camera at launch? Once the hype is over after a few months Sony’s camera prices always fall fast.
Nex-6 was a great exception I think. Prices stayed up high until recently.
So soon? Well, it’s been almost half a year. That’s plenty of time in Sony’s world.
If you’re regretting buying it after you’ve had it for 5 months, the camera probably isn’t for you.
I regret spending more than it’s worth, not buying it. It’s still a great camera, there are few usability problems like auto-iso or lossy raws, but it’s an amazing piece of gear.
Well, I wouldn’t spend the full retail price for any camera.
Soon you will learn not to buy Sony…
i want discount on the lenses!!!
What about Europe ?
Various Amazons run a7 at 20% off (or more) periodically; ebay.co.uk sees deeper discounts than that on used a7 body & kits.
a7r seems to be holding up better. Lenses seeing little discounting.
I noticed these were very cheap in Japan also. Nearly bought one but glad I didn’t. With all these deals there must be something going on!
This is probably all from the Sony employee discount thing. Should be temporary
The rushed discounts are surprising. Especially considering how long Sony waited before discounting the Rx100, a99, etc.
It suggests a couple possibilities:
1. Sales have been very disappointing.
2. Sony is willing to take tiny margins to spread as much adoption as fast as possible in order to:
2a– dominate the mirrorless ff market before any rivals can introduce competitive products.
2b– make the profit by selling high margin lenses.
3– Sony is making room for a new premium product.
I’m guessing the truth is a combo of 1 & 2.
That what I was thinking – #2b
2b – Sony lenses may be high margin but are not high volume because (if any lens is as good as it should be) it will survive many generations of body development.
Sony camera division only exists by keeping you interested in staying on top of the latest tech (not saying that it’s not good tech!) – and paying for it biannually (or better).
Why the A7/r cameras have lost their value so quickly? A7 slightly used can be found at $1300.
$1300 because you can get a brand new one for $1400 after the $300 trade-in credit.
Sony seems to have been commandeered by U.S. “Managers”.
They are behaving ungratefully to their employees at the U.S. Sony stores.
Sony is making disastrous decisions about product lines without regard to the losses it causes Sony’s customers.
Sony has not sufficiently re-assured their customers concerning the Light Leak issue.
They “forked” the A7 from the start by dumbing down the A7 model for “chumps” while puffing the A7r for the more “upscale” camera buyer.
The exterior design of the A7 is hideous from a cosmetic perspective.
Actually, very few people who are using a crop sensor or MFT sensor camera want to move to FF – if so they would rightfully choose Canon or Nikon.
Where do you want to start?
Yes and no … Why do so many continue to construe Sony as a camera maker rather than a consumer electronics giant (for the moment, at least)?
A7? – for me, coming from Nikon FF (and, yes, mft before that!) is the superior “A” currently, all things considered – and I don’t give a shit about the Light Leak “issue” (because I’ve seen it before and I am prepared to deal with it.)
The Fuji xt1 have light leaks, the canon 5dMIII have light leaks, some nikon have light leaks, just a few people have this problem, and sony replaces the camera if you have this problem. your just a troll..
Exactly, many of us have NO REASON TO MOVE TO FULL FRAME.
Unfortunately our NEX7´s are already used up, year after year shooting photos tens of thousands of photos.
There is no replacement for NEX7 and no reason to move to A7/r.
A6000? Yea right.
You have not reason to move to full frame. And Sony has no reason to believe many want to replace their Nex 7 with some better APS-C cam.
But maybe after the A77 successor had time to sell with a new sensor the A7000 will still be introduced with the same sensor later on.. but meanwhile looks like to stock up on Nex-7s..
It’s probably because of the light leak issue that has people selling them off for so cheap. OR they could be worried that Sony will just release another camera to fix the issue so better sell stock quick before new stuff comes in.
Had a peek into the VF of A7r and decided to get another camera or wait until they get a VF as good as the Fuji X-T1.
I think it is much the same EVF the only difference is that the Fuji has a margin more magnification, I would be very interested in the X-T1 if it only had better video. The video samples I have seen are amongst the worst if not the worst from any mirrorless camera.
The EVF synchronizes with sensor output faster than any other current mirrorless camera which gives a huge boost to the responsiveness in the X-T1’s EVF. Sizewize, it’s the biggest viewfinder in any digital camera, but, it’s not a HUGE amount bigger than the A7/A7R. It’s got a few other nice tricks that Sony could use, like the dual image mode for manual focus which lets you see an APS-C viewfinder sized view of the whole scene and a smaller view of the zoomed in selected focus area with whatever focus aid you have enabled. It works a treat. And of course, there’s the rotating info display when shooting in portrait mode which is kind of a “duh” feature, why doesn’t every EVF camera do this? Crazy.
Anyway, it’s great, but, it’s not really enough to decide between the cameras imho. FWIW, I owned both. I kept the X-T1. Far better shooting experience and far more lenses to select from. I’ll look at the A7 or successor in a year or so when Sony’s managed to slowly squeeze out a couple more lenses at their typically tortoise pace.
“a new higher end model?”
…or Sony’s strategy is to flood the market with these new bodies and then add more interesting things on top of them.
Think of A7/A7r as a platform on top of which a lot of other stuff can be sold. Something like PlayStation
A7 is best digital camera I’ve owned since 2001 (14 so far). It’s hilarious looking at all the clueless comments on here from gremlins who never have used one (and never will). Those of us who do own one are busy getting great image files especially with older manual focus lenses. It’s prints are better than my old medium-format 645 film camera, and a lot quicker from shot to print. After getting A7 I no longer miss my Mamiya. I may just buy another one and then sell it once the used prices go up, after everyone realizes how good it is.
The prices are dropping precipitously in some markets , by all means buy a second one if you need but expecting the SH market to go up when the new models are falling is downright optimistic. Pretty much all mirrorless cameras crash and burn on the used market long term, there is always something better coming along, that inevitably calls values to fall. I too love the results from my A7r but I can think of multiple features that could be improved.

Sony refurbished Rx1 Sale/Clearence
$2400 for an RX1 is a ‘clearance’ sale?
No way.
Well im waiting for Sony A99 prices to come down in Europe and they never come down. Deals with fl-60 are over too… Please Sony give us A99 at 1600€ like Canon 6D or Nikon D610.
Actually the [A7 + 35mm + flash] is best deal with an extra $105 off = $2293 (take off $300 from that) + $50 giftcard + lightroom

Admin, I think the SAR site has changed to a new font recently. Can you consider chaning it back? The new font is quite hard to read
Best guess at why Sony is discounting so hard: Their fiscal year probably ends soon and they want to be able to give the highest possible units sold count they possibly can for this new venture to convince shareholders it wasn’t a stupid idea. The revenue isn’t important, they know it will be a loss either way due to investment costs (R&D, ramp-up, etc.) so units sold is the key here.
So they give it away at a loss for a while. These sales will end as their fiscal year (or at least this quarter) ends, and then pricing will go back to normal for the most part. It doesn’t indicate a new model coming soon, it’s actually quite typical of the whole camera/electronics industry. Most Japanese companies have a fiscal year that ends around this time. You may notice that a bunch of other companies are pushing rebates right now too. Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Sigma, probably others.
A better reason why they are discounting: Nobody is buying because the prices are too high.
Will they go back to old prices? Unlikely. People have already been trained that prices only go down. Besides, if people weren’t buying at high prices before, why should they start buying at high prices now?
If that is the case, the chances for such price drops in Europe are little, since they didn’t happen already?
is all this price slashing in anticipation to the new FF e-mount camera coming out? To think the a7/r just came out like 5-6 months ago and already it’s being discounted so much…. sad
