It’s now summertime and we can take a deep breath before the next Sony announcement storm. If you wonder what we could expect to get from Sony in late 2015 here is a possible roadmap:
Cameras:
What’s pretty much sure to come is the A7sII. Also likely is a new A-mount camera also because Sony really HAS to bring it to show the A-mount system is well alive. The A7000 rumor was my heartbreaker and I do hope Sony will not miss the shot once again.
Lenses:
There will be a new Sony FE fast prime lens, new FE 24-70mm GM lens, new updated A-mount lenses and the Loxia wide angle lens.
(Im-)Possible surprises:
RX2 camera, A9 high end camera, medium format RX.
So what it’s high on your priority wish list?

There should probably be a new e-mount to A-mount adapter with no glass inside. Maybe Sony will delay its release to see how dismal the A99mkII will be.
I wouldn’t mind a new flash system for Sony.
LA-EA3 is already that. What would you expect in a new one?
one able to operate screw drive lenses
This! ^^^
That would be handy but would make the adapter even larger. I doubt it will happen as it would also encourage the purchase of older used lenses instead of shiny new lenses 🙂 But I would like to see it as one of my all time favorite lenses is the Minolta 200mm f/2.8 G HS.
I’ve heard of the new that the LA-EA3 is not a perfect companion to the A7rII. I expect a small device, built for the new Sony features such as 5-axis stabilization.
Don’t you rather mean LA-EA3 works the best on A7RII ? However it’s true LA-EA4 is far from the perfect companion to any E-mount camera unless you take pictures with your subject in or near the centre of your image (if it’s moving)… I sold mine because i don’t want to keep an 300$ adapter, i mainly use in manual mode 😉
Waiting for A7000… and finally for E-mount lens, would like to see 16/1.8 and 85/2.4 primes
I will just keep waiting for the unicorn, also known as the RX1 II or RX2 or whatever with curved FF sensor. Whatever the case, I loved the RX1 and am strongly craving an updated version. Hoping for brighter lens, faster AF, and a pop-up EVF like the RX100 IV.
Obviously there aren’t at least any rumors on a RX1 successor…? 🙁
+1 although I’d be happy if they just updated the sensor, autofocus and added EVF and left that glorious lens as is.
@admin: is an RX2 really so impossible now? Some months ago I recall seeing at least a weekly indication of such camera coming (ie. 35/1.8 curved patents). Is it (im)possible for 2015 or do you think in general even for 2016 and beyond that it will be unlikely? Thanks.
The 85 FE Sony/Zeiss would be something I am waiting for. It will most likely be f/1.4 with high price tag though.
That’s OK. Can we please get some confirmation of the rumor admin? I’ve got a Batis on order, but would go for this lens first.
Admin, are these rumors based on info from sources, or are these purely your speculations?
Just wondering where this is coming from Thanks
Based on rumors!
Exciting!
I can’t wait for the A7Sii!
Can you give any info on A99II rumors since you do post SR 1 rumors for E-mount! A new Ring Flash for macro work would be nice too!
This means no indication for a RX1 successor?
So why haven’t you rated any rumours? A lot of your post does sound like pure speculation and gives the impression you are getting very little information through, certainly compared to yesteryear.
You say, “Also likely is a new A-mount camera also because Sony really HAS to bring it to show the A-mount system is well alive”. Is this based on any solid information or are you simply wishing out loud? What makes you think Sony genuinely wants to show that A-mount is alive and well?
I can’t recall any A-mount rumors in the past few months. Besides the product cycle indicating a refresh by the end of the year, what leads the admin to believe there will be a new A mount camera??
Have you dropped your SR rating system? I haven’t seen SR ratings for a while.
SOny had a RX2 prototype but I heard they are evaluating if there is still a market for this camera. Apparently the A7 camera series success made the RX FF camera less “attractive” on the market. So maybe they will introduce it only if it has some compelling and unique features that differentiates it from the A7 series.
Like medium format for example , since Sony doesn’t have any medium format lens, then it would be great addition to add a medium format fixed lens camera
MF RX camera with around 55mm lens could be amazing, depending on how small a body they can fit around their 50mp MF sensor.
@SAR_Admin:disqus thank you for your detailed reply. I understand the reasoning of Sony, but with the Leica Q being released and the fact that a curved sensor can only be adopted for a non-system mount (as of today) I would have assumed that they’d still have enough of a financial reason to release it…let’s hope!
A7000 with 4K, a great BSI sensor still with 24MP for better noise characteristics, IBIS and pro level ergonomics.
And some new APS-C E-mount fast primes/70-200 equivalent.
I totally agree but i think we may light a giant candle and pray to expect such a camera ;)… I think Sony want to focus on FE market and deliver only APS-C mid-market camera. However i still wish your A7000 will be released from sept …2015
Agreed. I don’t really need a FF camera, and the best video quality comes from the APS-C crop of those for a reason. You also get a faster readout and possibly less heat generated.
I hope Loxia has a new 21mm F2 lens or wider. Not another 24mm F2.8 pls…
With the price and feature set of the A7rii, it’s hard to imagine an A9 around the corner. It would have to cost like $5000, and would either be broken into the s and r versions, or would just be a monster sports, landscape, video mashup. All of which seem unlikely.
I believe the A9 will be released only once Sony decides that the time of the A-mount is gone for good.
Before releasing a “pro” A9, I suspect Sony are trying to improve AF performance (both speed and low light) to a level where it can genuinely compete with a high-end DSLR.
They already have decided about A-mount. What’s still lacking is the on-sensor AF performance, especially low light and with long telephotos.
Once that is solved (maybe via multi-layer phase detect sensels, like in the recently published patent), there will be A9 and there will be lights out for A-mount.
Yeah, but they are pretty close now, just a matter of reaching -4ev(or darker) and +12fps with AF.
Global shutter-like full electronic shutter like the RX series would be groundbreaking too, maybe they can eliminate completely the mechanical shutter.
It’s pretty obvious now that Sony marketing need several month between every camera launch… So my bet is a7000 + lenses at photokina and a7sII in early 2016
If a a9 exist, it has to be launched before olympics games
Photokina is every 2 years, so with the last one occurring in 2014, the next one isn’t until 2016. But with the way the a7000 ‘rumors” are going, you might not be off by saying it’s not coming until the next Photokina.
A7SII + 24-70 f2.8 is great. What i also wish is: 120-300 f2.8 (like the Sigma <3) and a wider wideangel, like the sigma or canon 11/12-24. I would be happy 🙂
“It’s now summertime and we can take a deep breath before the next Sony announcement storm.”
When was it posted because i would rather say “Now summertime is almost over and we can take…..”
Loxia 18mm f/2.8 and 24-70mm f/2.8 would be most delicious, thank you very much 🙂
I am hoping for a Loxia 18mm too, but would prefer ƒ4 or 3.5 to keep it smaller and lighter.
Loxia <=18mm and I'm in
I’m hoping for Loxia 25mm f/2, so matches same speed as other two offerings. There’s no 25/2 in the ZM lineup, but there is one that exists in the cine CP.2 range, and an adapted version of that would be fantastic. Eventually it would be nice to see a super wide like 15/2.8, but would rather see the line mature with the “regulars” first. Eventually hoping for an 85/2 and 135/2 to make the line fleshed out.
Hurry up and release the A99 mkII so I can pick up an A99 mkI for peanuts!
FIRST MARKETING ROOLE :: DONT BLAME THE SUMMER
No camera in hollydays ( fine!!!!) and now i will go for real pricevallue
real 4k Camera for normal 8 bit Consumers:. PANASONIC G7……
sold my old horse a57…. fine but it was time…. SONY will not get me
a 2cnd. time…
Hmm, wide angle loxia. Let’s see if it’d be better/cheaper/smaller than some M-lenses.
yeh, a7sII for $4k for those several hundreds that can afford it :). come on, 1k, well 2k i can somehow understand for a camera, but 3-4.. it’s not a car :).
RX2 with OVF or EVF please! With Fuji saying they will not go FF and Leica being obscene expensive of course there will be a market for RX2 – an ultimate street & travel camera.
I personally would be surprised if Sony don’t update the A99 with the new BSI 42Mp full frame sensor in the next few months.
This will also play very well strategically. After market-testing the sensor in the A7rII and fixing the problems highlighted in the detailed reviews coming out all over the place at the moment, they can fix them and come out with a reliable “pro” level A99II body.
Sony has no credible long lenses of interest to wildlife shooters, and fo A mount none are even available by 3rd parties.
The absolutely essential wildlife lens is!!!!!!!
300-600mm f 4.8, 5.0, or 5.6…prefferably 4.8
The important features of this lens to make it stand out from yhe crowd….
150mm barrel extender for close focus/macro mode,
And dedicated drop in 1.8x teleconverter.
A click stop on the barrel extender would be used with the 1.8x, and an ocptics case can clip onto the lens for easy use and dust protection.
Best color for wildlife lens is olive green..please not white.
Price mid $3000 range.
Also possible might be drop in .6x focal extender.
The absolutely essential wildlife lens is one that doesn’t exist at all for any system??
Absolutely..!!
Because if Sony does not stand out from the crowd they will fail.
This lens will offer unique features and versatility to achieve that goal.
Also it will fit between all the 600mm f4, and 150-600mm f 6.3 lenses currently availble.
The Canon 200-400mm with built-in extender seems like the most kick@ss wildlife lens (except for the price). It gets a user nearly the 300-600mm range witch extension engaged. The new 100-400 is well reviewed.
The lens I am proposing would be usable at over 1000mm focal length and as a supertele close up/ macro.
The ultimate wildlife/bird combination.
Most importantly these are the most important features and can all be quickly accessed without changing lenses.
The lens you propose is a dream by a non-marketing / non-engineering person, the lenses I mentioned exist and can be rented/bought this very moment.
The three available 150-600s are more popular, better suited to more people and also available…but the point is that this would be a much better choice.
You look at what has not yet been done and ask why
I look at what can be done and ask why not?
I am trying to encourage Sony to make this lens.
If you like the concept then join me in encouraging Sony to make this lens rather than arguing with me…you are still free to disagree and be against me on other things, but at least be with me on this…if they make this lens at this price we will all benefit.
The JFK quote is silly in this context. An extended 1000mm macro is technically absurd, has little practical use, would probably have poor optical quality and the market for it is nill (so your fanciful dreams of a dirt cheap price is equally silly).
I’d like a compact car that gets 500miles to the gallon, has awd for snow and off-roading, can seat 8 comfortably with plenty of trunk space, can do 0-60 in 3 seconds w/ top speed of 195 and costs 19k fully loaded. Come on Ferrari, I’m a dreamer and I’m encouraging you.
The lenses I mentioned are excellent choices for high optical quality and reach. These are lenses for people taking photos for the sake of photos, exhibition and printing not merely studies for research purposes.
How well the lens works depends on how well ot is desighned and built.
Sony will not build it unless they can build it well…..and I also noted in the description that some people will not want the tc so it shoild be available seperately.
If this lens is built and any quality issues are resolved, as I am sure they will be this would be the ultimate birding lens.
My specs and prices are doable…mayby a bit of a challenge, but doable..
I know you preffer to dissagree with me on everything…but this would really be a good issue to be on the same side about and we could go back to feuding later.
I will again mention this lens in future posts….I ask you, and anyone else that may be willing…to please support me in asking for this lens on the slight chance Sony might be listening to us.
I’m not feuding, Sony isn’t listening and such a lens (even if it were feasible so as to not render terrible images or be ridiculously priced since it would be so niche) makes no sense from a design standpoint or use case standpoint. Having to change lenses for different focal lengths at decent quality is a fact of life for glass lenses. Liquid lenses are still a ways off.
We did not agree on
IBIS for E mount
Full af compatability for dslr lenses on mirrorless
BSI ff sensor
Dual lens/body stabilzation
And in each case you also told me Sony was not listening.
Unfurtanitely it also appears we are not going to agree on on the merrits of this propposed lens either. I do trully believe this lens will be something special if built.
Too bad, I had hoped we could have been on the same side.
P.S.
I do agree with you that lquid lenses are at best a ways off as they currently do not seem to offer the image quality necessary…perhaps you want to change your opinion on that so we can dissagree on that too.
– I always agreed IBIS is a great feature. I purchased an a99 partly because of IBIS. I reported what a Sony rep at PhotoPlus 2013 and Mark Weir (not a mystery “manager”) said to me (to my face) when I asked them specifically about IBIS and e-mount. Both said it was not possible in full frame in e-mount particularly with the 36mp sensor (because of the micro lenses).
Now either Mark was honest and it was not possible at that time (and R&D was still working on it) or they intentionally held it back for planned obsolescence. Either way, Sony hedged their bets by incorporating OSS in e-mount lenses.
You in no no way, shape or form influenced Sony in any degree to incorporate IBIS starting with the a7II. This was a feature obviously in development for years. We all agreed that it is a great & worthwhile feature, but some users accept current equipment and work with it and others whine endlessly. I am in the former camp. In no way does current camera tech prevent anyone from producing fantastic photos that were not possible just 10 years ago. Anyone who is unable to capture great photos with current dslrs or mirrorless cameras has a problem with their abilities not their equipment.
Being happy with what you have, and “whining for something better” both have a place and function.
So I will continue to do both as I have for a long time.
I currently speak very highly of the new a7rii, fe 90mm macro, and the 3 new 150-600mm macro lenses by Tamron and Sigma.
In the meantime I will continue to whine for future products that can be even better….including the 300-600mm macro….which is what I will reffer to it as for brevity.
And saying what we want cannot hurt…whether it actually helps or not.
Christopher
You nade a false incorrect statement and represented it as absolute fact…ibis is not possible on ff …. and you justify this horrible crime you have committed simmply because you heard it from a source that you believed to be rliable, so you repeated what you were told and beilived as fact.
I actually understand and accept that reasoning, and believe you did nothing wrong.
In this same comment you make virtually the same accusation against me…several years ago I spoke to a source that I believed to be credible and rported as a near certainty what he told me…which actually contradicted some of my own earlier predictions which actually ended up being correct.
Years later you still condmn me ..as do others on SAR for this hrrible crime…in fact the same horrible crime you have just admited to.
This is a rummor site, and while I am very proud of the level of accuracy of my predictions they will not always be correct.
I am not a politician, so not everything I say will be said in a politically correct manner, or a manner that will satisfy my critics..such as yourself….so mayby you want to look at your own house before throwing the next brick (-8
I reported in the comment section: “Mark Weir says IBIS is not possible with the full frame e-mount” – he told me this at a press event at the end of PhotoPlus.
Meanwhile you demanded a SAR post about inaccurate information you received via a call from a mysterious Sony manager.
In 2013, to get out a full frame mirrorless camera body before the competition I believe that IBIS was not possible at that time.
I also reported that the information came from an anonymous Sony sourse and reported the information as coming from that source.
The only part of my information that turned out not to be correct was the resolution …I was told it would be 32mp and it was 24…and the release date of the a77ii…relatively minor innacuracies by todays stsndards.
You however reported a much more significant false claim…that IBIS was not possible with ff E mount.
Again I do not fault you for making a false claim that you believed at the time was true…but you continue to condemn me for making a much less significant false claim that I too believed was true.
You must make a choice here..either condemn both of us for the same offense….or condemn niether of us because incorrect rummors are unavoidable if rumors are to be listened to at all, and niether of us deliberately said things that we did not believe to be tje truth.
But comdemning me while decaring yourself innocent is hypocritical
I photograph press events frequently. I posted information here, in the comments section, that I was told at a press event and I named my source (Mark Weir). This information, at the time may or not have been true, that is for readers to decide with all news outlets. I reported it as an independent news gatherer.
A year and a quarter later, as the march of technology inevitably advanced, what may have been not possible in October of 2013 was possible in January 2015. Did Mark Weir lie or was his statement regarding e-mount true at that point in time? Either are possibly. Only Sony r&d knows for sure. Either way, I am pleased that Sony’s hard work and investment resulted in the superior 5 axis system. That last sentence is my opinion not reportage (see the difference?).
Now let’s see your scenario. You have no credentials in journalism. You claimed that you had an anonymous source whose title was simply “manager” called you up to give you information (maybe you were pranked since you are so disliked on SAR and canon rumors). And then you demanded that the admin here publish your information which was all wrong because you were bloodthirsty for praise and to finally break your own ultimately erroneous rumor.
If you are unable to see the differences in these two scenarios, you will ned a lot more than a 42mp sensor to see hints clearly.
Your SAR rumor, Feb 2014:
(Source: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr2-rumors-posted-by-our-reader-animalsbary-a77-successor-foveon-z-shift-and-more/)
“A sony manager just actually called me to share this info so it is sr5″
“A79..will be 32mp”
– WRONG….WRONG
“Ff cameras will be 24 and 36mp a mount”
– WRONG
“Hybrid camera will have z shift”
– WRONG
“Stacked sensor will probably be early to mid 2015 not late 2015”
– WRONG (unless one comes out before September)
“Ospdaf in future cameras will work with most 3rd party lenses including tamron and sigma..so high speed af will be available ”
– You were referring to a-mount or a hybrid camera, WRONG at the time, PARTLY CORRECT today
This comes from a high level sony us manager and you can safely call this sr5
– WRONG
Big announcement in next couple of weeks..a lot of this info will be released then
– WRONG
Barry”
More like SR .5
By the way…I already have the Tamron 150-600 A mount and like it as well as the Bigma that I have not used since getting the Tammy. I do agree with you that the lenses you mentioned are good lenses.
But what does not currently exist is a supertele macro….I use the term loosely, knowing it is not a true macro…
And what also does not currently exist is a lens that is a compromise between the super good expensive heavy 600mm primes and the reasonably good light economical popular 150-600mm f5.6 lenses.
This lens would fall exactly in the middle between those classes of lenses, as well offer additional flexibility no lens currently has…I cannot see why anyone interrested in a supertele would not love this lens .
I am with you on this car thing. Come on everyone, let’s encourage automakers to build this car!
I’m hanging onto my trusty 5N until Sony releases their 3 layer sensor. If it’s not out by 2017 it might be time to buy a Bayer sensored A7 (III? IV?) but I’d really prefer it to be Foveon-like by then.
How about an A99 mk.2 ?
a99II in september – unposible!
Looks like every month has only 1 week :-/
When you get a bit older that sounds about right
True dat. And each year turns into a month or so.
Any details on the 24-70? If it’s 2.8 it’s VERY VERY interesting, it’s the lens I miss the most. If it’s another f4 it makes no sense as there’s already the 28-70 and the Zeiss 24-70 f4…
I am perfectly happy with my ZA 24-70/2.8 via LA-EA3 on A7rII. AF is pretty fast and very precise. Weight and balance is manageable. Second generation is probably even better. Plus the used prices are really low due to uncertain future of A-mount and availability of second generation of lens.
Does the focus assist light work with the adapter?
Frankly, I have not tried that, plus I do not have native flash anymore to test AF assist light on flash (sold my F56AM in favor of manual YN flashes).
On-camera AF assist is probably useless because big lenses block it, even the FE16-35/4 with hood does, so ZA 24-70/2.8+LA-EA3 is likely to block it too.
No, it doesn’t work on E-mount cameras, even if you put the HVL-F60M, it doesn’t work. No full compatibility.
I was hoping they fixed it in the new camera’s. It is one of my biggest annoyances with my a7
Would be nice not to have the adapter with its f3.5 limit for autofocus. And as I do mainly video the auto focus of native e mounts tend to be smoother for that if I get things correctly. And also hoping for OSS, although that’s probably optimistic for a 24-70 f2.8. But Tamron could do it, so why not sony?
Give me a RX2 with EVF, 50 mm f2.0, leaf shutter, 1/2000 sec flash sync and decent manual focusing:-)
This is what’s on my wish list for the A99ii (I’m sure many will be included but hoping for most if not all, fingers crossed!):
– 5 Axis IBIS
– Improved AF with large coverage area
– GPS (ship with it disabled for those that don’t want it and us that do can enable it)
– Auto ISO in Manual mode
– Wifi, Improved and faster tether options and support (eg, Wifi ac)
– Improved Tether options such as backup to local storage as well as push via USB (for extra Protection!)
– USB 3.1 (USB-C) – Would be great as it’s backwards compatible, reversible (and will allow for VERY fast tether support!)
– 720P and 4K internal recording
– Faster response times and boot up of camera
– Better EVF especially in very bright and low light environments
– Much Improved low light ISO performance
– Keep the multi card slots for obvious reasons on this level of camera (Very important)
– Same or perhaps slightly smaller body size of the current A99 would be great for my personal taste
– Better and faster access to flash control with greater exposure consistency
– Switch between PAL or NTSC (single mode/firmware)
– Improved battery life when using rear LCD and better options to setup how you want to use it and when
– Ability to save camera serial number in EXIF
– Better F2.8 kit lens (SSM like the A77 the current SAM lens needs replacing/updating)
– 2 levels of preview zoom, eg, if default zoom is 100% a 50% zoom first would be good as I find you often need to zoom out.
– Zoom in/out/pan during preview needs to be allot more responsive and faster.
– Inbuilt flash is fine, although hardly ever used it can be handy at times rather than having to attach the HVL-F20M (eg, remote trigger)
– Improved buffer handling and faster flushing of cache to memory
– Full electronic shutter option
– Timelapse photo mode (eg, app support included)
– Keep the current screen design, LOVE the flexibility and convenience it offers at times (fantastic design)
Phew, that should be enough to work on for now I reckon 🙂
you missed one important item:
– E-mount
And Sony should have it all ready by next month 8*)
I was hoping for next week but sure next month will be fine 🙂 hahaha
Agreed! For me especially the sensor quality, AF performance (many more points and speed) and the flash system needs attention (I am now working with the A900).
Internal M.2 Sata 3.0 16gb storage would allow them to drive the buffer forever.
Only one A-mount camera? So again no 1DX/D4S competitor. Why is Sony so afraid of going head to head against 1DX/D4S if it has the resources and the best hardware for making it happen?
I assume the next A mount camera will be the “real” pro placed camera.
And I think it will not be called A99x.
Lenses have more or less be updated. I’m sure they will come up with SSM versions of the Planar 85 and the Sonnar 135.
If this was true, the Sony 90/2.8G(Macro) and especially Sony Zeiss 35/1.4 would have been developed in A-mount. Those lenses broke the weight and compromise pattern for E-mount. If they add high end F2.8 zooms as well, that’s it for A-mount.
You are right – an updated macro and an updated 35G would be the last in line to complete the pro line-up.
However I still do not think they will abandon the A mount on short term.
They probably will in a couple of years.
The 1DX & D4S are basically loss-leaders, the real money is made on what you find in places like Best Buy, plus there aren’t nearly enough Sony professions wanting a 1DX or D4S variant to justify even the R&D costs. Sony is a video-centric camera manufacturer, the A7 line is the future, as noted in the high demand and solid sales on the A7 line.
C’mon Sony…a99II !
I’ve just sold out E-mount stuff as rather useless for my type of work, now keep only A700/A900 cameras with excellent selection of A-mount glass. There must be definitely an agreement between Nikon and Sony connected with sensors (Sony has left A-mount DSLR pro market in favour to Nikon, Nikon decided not to compete in pro EVIL market). I hope that this agreement won’t last forever and Sony will be able to deliver DSLR to compete with Nikon once.
A99II, and it better compete against 1DX!
I would prefer it compete against the D810, 5DSr & A7rII, being a high mega pixel general purpose photographic tool. That would be more consistent with the original A99’s intent and appeal to a larger audience.
Sony already released that camera, and it’s called the A7RII. The last thing Sony should do now is duplicate cameras across mounts. Sony needs to continue down the path they started with A77II for A-mount and focus on speed & performance.
This ‘possible roadmap’ didn’t come from Sony or any reliable sources? Just an imagination or an educated guess from past rumors?
All. Plus a good way to generate clics in summer when rumor flood is dry
That’s why its a ‘possible roadmap’ rather than a ‘Sony published roadmap’ maybe? Though Sony HAS a roadmap and there were real leaks about a few of these things (A6000 replacement / sister model and 24-70mm at least).
I am happy with my gear for the time being.
Depending on the fl I would go for the promised loxia – and I hope they’ll come with an 18mm with filter threat (important for me).
21mm is not enough uwa for me as I own the Batis 25 and the Canon 24 TS-E already.
If the 2470/2.8 GM would become real I would consider buying it if it does meet appropriate IQ expectations.
85>55>35mm primes are some kind of standard meanwhile.
21mm would be the next appropriate step and
14mm would complete the line with
14>21>35>55>85mm … 50+% up in each step.
So 20/21mm Loxia would be highly welcome. Intermediate steps like 18 or 25mm are not needed from my side.
Well, that lineup is unlikely to happen as they already have a 50mm and a 55mm is too close to make much difference.
The 85mm is interesting to me, although much less so now that the Batis has arrived. I’m disappointed to see the three rumors I was MOST interested in have vanished. They are:
* The A9, “pro” targeted A7 step up, presumably faster AF, more rugged, better burst, non lossy raw
* The A5, FF “budget” step down from the A7 with the smaller, boxy (“rangefinder” style) form factor
* Non lossy RAW option/addition via firmware for all cameras
Where (marketing pov) to place an A9. With the A7RII I would assume the market chance maximal moderate.
The A7 is available at 999,- € new. I guess there would be little market chance for a cheaper A5.
“Real” 14 bit would be welcome.
Lossy raw rumor has not vanished, Sony itself said it’s in the pipeline. It’s just a question of time
You replied to the wrong guy. 🙂
Ooops. Sorry i’m on my phone
Off topic : this site is quite unusable with a phone browser.
@admin: give me a rumor about sonyalpharumors.app
It is amazing that it would take any time at all, as all other companies provide it. It is absurd that they have released yet another camera without lossless RAW files. While it is better than 8-bit, the A7 series has been limited to a lossy file format similar to jpeg (just with more bits), which is not optimal.
I doubt there ever will be “budged” FF camera below A7x. With current Sony strategy of heavily discounted previous generation gear still being available, that camera would have to go way below 1000$. Unless they drop the whole APS-C range, that is not going to happen.
A9 will happen once they can deliver on AF performance. Given their statement of “short term focus on event and wedding photographers”, it is likely to happen very soon.
A7000, only if it has IBIS.
And weather sealing. On another site they talked all about 4k. I don’t care about 4k.
I don’t care that you don’t care. I want 4K.
I don’t care about 4k either. I want 2.5k raw
While I love all the great features that Sony packs into their camera’s I don’t like the thought of it being held up for 4k as it would seem it is. My phone will do 4k. I have never done it beyond just trying it out, 4k is far far from the norm even with the cheaper tv’s that are now available. IBIS and weather sealing are much much more important as they will help the entire device not just one specialized aspect of it.
What good is 4k if your camera is junk from too much sweat and humidity? That is my trouble right now, the control wheel is for all intents and purposes non functional. O it will change a setting on its own every once in awhile. Then you can’t change it back. I would trade the higher bit rate codec to have weather sealing on the A6000 in a heartbeat.
Is you phone weather sealed? If so just use that.
Interestingly, I’ve been shopping for a new TV and reading reviews and ‘buyer’s guide” articles. The consensus on 4K is: don’t bother, nobody really cares today, and it’s going to take years. You can’t actually see the difference on a TV at normal viewing distances.
When I bought my first flat panel TV back in 2002, they said “don’t worry about HD…it’ll take years before there is content for it”. The TV still works great, but everything is only DVD-quality on it now. Waiting for it to break before I buy a new one to replace it…
Motion and color rendering/DR are much important than the resolution.
4K needs sitll better motion rendering b/c the unevenness or smearing is best visible on small sharp details. At 30 fps it is hard to achieve at all, moreover the bandwidth is consumed by high resolution. Of course, if you are going to look at 4K stills :)…
After the less than popular reception of the 24-70 f4 I’m hopeful over the potential of this rumored 24-70 gm (f2.8 fingers crossed).
There’s a lot of good opinion on the performance of the a-mount 24-70 f2.8 using an la-ea4, hopefully they can repeat that same optical quality but on a native e-mount.
The tourists dream, a high quality travel lens for the A7rII.
I mentioned, that I would love to buy the rumored 2470/2.8 if it delivers “more” than just one stop light compared to the FE2470Z.
It is not the size that would bother me using the vario-sonnar from A mount – the weight matters. Incl. LA-EA4 it would be around 1.115g.
Ha-ha, I’m the opposite, weight doesn’t bother me so much as size 🙂
For travel A7rII with FE 16-35/4 + FE 55/1.8 is so much better than 24-70/2.8, at least from my experience. The combination allows you to go much wider (16mm vs 24mm is huge), gives more than full stop of low light and shallow DoF at very useful 55mm focal length, plus the whole package still weights less than single 24-70/2.8 lens.
Valid arguments. Except for necessity to change a lens.
That is a down-side. I would certainly prefer a light and compact 16-200/1.8 for travel. Sadly such lenses exist only for broadcast cameras and they are neither small nor light and cost more than average house 😉
You need to make a 16 to 500/1.8, otherwise Barry will not buy in 🙂
In the end it is a matter of individual preference. When I am travelling I more often need fl ahead of 50mm than below 24 for example.
Uwa is my first choice when I am out for landscape projects.
And you may not underestimate the dislike of many for changing lenses.
The sales of superzooms prove that.
With macro focus
I want a 15mm or wider loxia, I love the Voigtlander15mm III, but with two other Voigtlander lenses I use a lot, it’d be nice to have the exif data…
Disgraceful how Sony refuses best sensor in pro grade A Mount body. Pathetic. Insulting. Disingenuous. Reason for every professional to think twice about supporting Sony when they abandon their own.
Careful with your wanderlust CaNikon friends.
Sony doesn’t respond to the most robust pro needs.

Message to Sony Japan:
I DEMAND that Sony make at least ONE new APSC A-Mount Body yearly and ONE new FF A-mount body every 2 years. That is all I ask for. Keep the A-mount alive with one APSC and one FF. It should be very EASY for Sony to do so seeing how they keep producing e-mounts every half yearly. They don’t have to make new A-mount APSC lenses. A-mount APSC body can use the included kit lens, and we can buy from Tamron and Sigma for any additional APSC lenses (Which will keep Sigma, Tamron, & Tokina happy too); while A-mount FF will continue to use all the Zeisses & G’s Sony had been updating. Don’t tell me it is SO difficult just to come out with ONE A-mount APSC yearly. If SONY cannot even do that, they fail and will LOSE all their existing A-mount PROFESSIONAL users. Also Don’t forget about the middle range PRO-APSC users. They need A-mount APSC’s for 2nd bodies as well. Don’t forget who your original users are, because simple things like these is what they deserve! Sure! Any enthusiast can just switch to E-mount, but don’t forget that the PRO’s that love your products cannot, simply because e-mount is not suitable for work, and sure as well we do not want to re-invest from scratch.
In short:
Make me a new A-mount APSC with kit lens yearly & A-mount FF with updated Zeisses & G’s every 2 years. It’s simply, keep the A-mount alive with both formats.
Maybe the a9 would close the gap between a99 and mirrorless. It would probably come with an laea5 adapter to move over a mount lenses. Bigger body but not as big as the a99. But from a marketing standpoint I doubt they would want to draw attention away from the a7rii right away so most likely they will release an a99 successor or just wait till end of year.
Now price for sony a7rII is 2650,- euro
Where?
Stolen
Meth dealer’s trunk.
ask any dealer who doesn’t hold Sony price policy. Use google and you will find the price. Sony a7RII is overpriced at least in Europe
Clickbait.
I don’t understand why they seemingly abandoned the RX1 concept.
Considering it shares a sensor with (and was released alongside) the a99, it could be announced with the a99II and feature whatever new sensor goes into that camera (assuming no full frame curved sensor).
They didn’t. They added the E-mount and the rest is history.
That’s not to say they might return to the concept. If Leica gain traction with the Q we might just see a new model at some point.
Is this just musings of the admin? An 85? We already have the Zeiss Batis 85 and Sony G 90. Why not fill a gap somewhere? What about 70-200/2.8?
70-200/4 G is already available and great, but quite heavy lens. f2.8 tele zoom would be by far too heavy for me.
Zeiss pockets all of the money for their 85mm lens. Sony will want your money too !
Zeiss is a partner. Sure, the pocket the money for the Batis line, but work with them to fill out the line before competing with your partners. Releasing an 85 right now make no sense; there is already the amazing Batis 85 and G 90. Fill in the gaps! 70-200/2.8 for example. 135mm is another gap.
Don’t start competing with your partners until you have a solid full spectrum lineup.
You are entitled to an opinion, but the bottom line is they are separate companies with their own marketing strategies. You may not like it, but that’s just the way it is.
I may not like what?
Sony isn’t releasing another 85; that was the musings of the admin.
I realise you were commenting on the admin’s musings. I was referring to the last line of your comment.
Apologies if it seemed personal.
Don’t be surprised about a second 85mm.
People even want a fourth 35mm that’s f/2 with AF…lol
What about an 18/3.5?
??
Who cares about 24-70? What we need is 70-200 2.8.
Best lens combo ever: 16-35 + 55 + 70-200.
With these 3 lenses you cover from ultra wide landscapes of any kind to telephoto, including super low light, street photography, events, fashion, sport (with 1.6 crop mode on A7RII..).
And you don’t triple cover… Anyone who has 16-35 24-70 and 55 is covering 3 times the same focal…. waste of weight, time, money, …
Anyway. Give us 70-200mm 2.8 with Canon 70-200II quality please !
Best combo ever? Hmm, no. My 11-24mm destroys your 16-35!
Are you really comparing a $3000 lens that weighs twice as much to a $1000 lens? FYI, the 11-24 can be adapted with full AF on the A7rII.
Its an awesome lens, but given its size/weight/cost and filter compatibility, I’d take the 16-35 and stitch. YMMV.
I was being slightly facetious, but it is an awesome lens despite the heft.
Its always tough to tell with a bunch of text. It seemed over the top, but you never know with the endless bashing of everything on the interweb these days.
hahahahaha. Best joke ever.
Your 11-24mm costs double the price, does not get normal filters for long exposure landscape, weights more, does not have IS and does not cover the 35mm range.
So thanks, but no.
Double the price for double the quality!
Double the posts for double the stupidity! 😉
Anyone considering the Nikkor 14-24/2.8? I’ve always wanted this lens, but it’s big bucks. Then there’s the Hartblei HCAM Master T/S version of the Nik. That’s bonkers money!
16mm is not wide enough for me. So I got the 10-18mm Sony lens. Works FF from 12-16mm and it costs a fraction of the Canon 11-24mm and takes filters too. 🙂
Honestly, give the Samyang 14/2.8 a try. I love it.
Doesn’t take filters. 🙁
Does take filters. Also look at the new Fotodiox Viselex ND Throttle adapter.
I meant doesn’t take filters easily. The filters and adapters needed for the 14mm are almost 2 times the cost of just the lens.
http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/samyang-sfh14-filter-holder-14mm.html
http://www.ukdigital.co.uk/samyang-cokin-154-filter.html
So around 80 quid. Admittedly not B+W or Singh Ray, but . . .
Not bad. I had seen the Lee filter system and that was frighteningly expensive. 😛
This is actually reasonable but it is still a very cumbersome solution. My 12-16mm lens has OSS, is wider, has zoom and takes 62mm filters directly with no fuss.
Small is beautiful in this photog game. How about a CV 15 MKIII?
Well the Sony 10-18mm zoom isn’t much bigger than the CV 15 Mk 3, is much wider (12mm vs 15mm), vignettes much less and can take filters directly while also offer a very limited zoom. 🙂
And of course it has AF and direct compatibility.
Variable ND-2-1000 for long exposure you must be joking? poorest quality ever ..? Nope.
I agree though that the Samy 14mm is a very cool glass.
When you say works, how well?
Exactly! 16-35 + 55 + 70-200 is the perfect combo!
I just had this conversation with a “professional” wedding photographer friend of mine who insists 24-70 should be the first and primary lens on all cameras. Why overlap I asked? He’s says overlap is important so you have fewer lens changes.
The 55/1.8 is my favorite lens, and I can use foot-zoom in between the 16-35 and 70-200.
Anyway… I’m with you… give us the 70-200/2.8!
The thing is: the 16-35mm gets increasingly softer towards the long end. I’d say it’s usable till about 28mm. So I always take the 35mm too, if I’m doing landscapes. For wedding photography when only doing A4/A3 max prints you might be fine though.
Uhhh I care.
24-70, 55, 70-200 is my setup.
The 24-70 f4 right now has ridiculous amount of pincushion distortion. Hopefully the 2.8 will address this issue. And we already have 70-200 f4 which does good.
I care for 24-70 f2.8. You do not speak for everybody.
Oh and pleas no Canon quality, but Zeiss qualiquaility ty. We dont need the handbrake 🙂 turned on
Over here with 3k you may get, perhaps, a 1980 Fiat 600 s xD
A7sII with IBIS, D4s focusing and burst/buffer rate, 16mp and 15 stop DR, psychotic ISO performance . . .
A native Noctilux too. FE 50/0.95 with AF.
Yummy!
I fully expect the a7sII to be amazing – faster, better AF, internal 4k without the overheating issues the a7rII contends and maybe even small IQ improvement.
The a99II is the bigger question. Will Sony incorporate their new 5-axis IBIS or cheap out and re-use the current a-mount steady shot? Will Sony integrate a proper full frame AF module or recycle an aps-c part again? Will Sony use a new full frame middle resolution sensor (possibly with BSI) for a balance of speed, quality & sensitivity? The answers to these questions will prove Sony’s longer commitment to a-mount native bodies.
if they cheap out on the a99ii then management should expect a ton of hate, i already feel angry on the cheapening of features on a77ii, no gps, focus assist light and limited wifi and apps stuff vs e mount.
its quite insulting to a mount users that 5 axis was introduced ages ago on e mount, rather than the line that has no stabilised lenses…
It’s also insulting that Sony used the A99 as a test bed for on-sensor focusing sensors but they then won’t update the camera or fix any of the problems with it like soft video Then they turn around and make another e-mount camera (A7Rm2) after the A7m2 was just produced and put the new sensor into.
The thing is… Is there a point with the A mount? I bet they will have more success with an A99 styled body with both E-mount and A7rII technology bundling an A adapter.
This potentially will integrate both systems together.
I don’t want adapters friend. More kinks in the connection chain. More rotational wobble points. More flex points for longer lenses.
I have LAEA1/3/4 and Metabones IV. None of them are as stable or secure as native six screw AMount. None of them are as fast or sure footed as a99 AF. None of them allow AFC with Cont High motor. Must use Cont Low motor for AFC… about 2fps.
You may use the adapters all you want. Please don’t insist that I do. It lacks the refinement earned from 30 years of native AMount evolution.
Clearly you haven’t used Sony teleconverters with G-series F2.8 lenses on E-mount cameras. You loose AF and Aperture control for some weird reason. Sony haven’t been able to solve that issue. Also, I haven’t seen the a7Rm2 with AF-D Range.
Also, A-mount lenses have mechanical coupling. Many people hate focus-by-wire. Specially people who use cameras for video work and need precise focus control.
Also if the A7sII would be designed to take the experia Z3 battery 3100mAh it would be great. It would make the body a bit thicker but it would have fantastic battery life!
It’s not that much different.
mAh is not the unit to compare if the VOLTAGE is not the same. Battery should be about the same size if it has same mWh (Voltage x mAh).
Sony Xperia Z3 (3100mAh at 3.6 volt) is just 11.16 Wh, 50% more than np-fw50 7.344 Wh (1020mAh x 7.2 volt).
So you’re asking for 50% improvement here. I’d ask for more, personally.
I’d like to see an A7Sii that is the logical hybrid of A7S + A7ii… but given heat issues a slightly thicker A7ii style body to incorporate proper heat sinks or silent active cooling. A detachable / modular viewfinder that allows “normal” placement or remote via cable to a rig mounting point would be fantastic. These two physical changes, slightly thicker, and removable VF, would explain the “Canon XC10-alike” rumor from before… just a bit squatter / thicker / boxier profile, but DNA really A7-like. 12 MP is great, but a slight MP bump to allow crop shooting in native 4K resolution without up sampling like A7S does. Fully articulating screen, internal 4K recording, global shutter (or at least rolling shutter performance somewhere between Alexa and GH4), IBIS, BSI (benefit not as great as high-rez sensor, but there would be small benefit regardless) etc.. Along with launch of A7Sii an XLR-K3M module. This would mount to the top of the A7Sii in place of the removable VF. In addition to microphone mount and XLR inputs like existing adapters, have an integrated top handle and an ENG/EFP style VF or VF mounting point for shoulder use.
I want a FF camera with wide AF coverage, EVF and a native 24-70 f/2.8 lens.
So far there isn’t one by any manufacturer… although this doesn’t look like unreasonable specs to me.
Just did another wedding. A7 gets sold this week….ALTHOUGH…it performed respectably. I ended up shooting it for about 90 percent. Few things though:
1) LAEA4 konked out on me a few times. I wouldn’t register with camera. I had to unlock and twist back on.
2) While I missed some shots due to focusing- it wasn’t all that bad. Besides, I’m constantly surprised on just how much I can get done quickly through peaking and MF. People don’t tend to move around to much at weddings anyway- besides the processional jazz.
3) Wedding was from 3-10pm. I killed three batteries on the A7..but I used the A77II as well. Mostly 135 on that and 50 zeiss here and there. Lots of switching the A7 off in between. I killed 25 percent of one battery just getting my lighting set up outside.
Now all about that lighting. I did manual- just to crazy man, too crazy. “Ain’t nobody got time for that.” Exactly. It worked, but next one I’ll be running the new Nissin off camera since they do TTL and HSS. All these people want on site type of stuff. Not to many want their portraits in doors.
Any way, not sure what I’ll end up doing. I may just grab an A99, My biggest grip actually wasn’t the focusing speed of the LAEA4. It was the wonky adapter connection issues (twice happened) and no IBIS. I lost shots going down to 1/60th. So much going on..someone jumps into the shadows and wammo..
And I seriously need a 24-70mm 2.8 even more than a 70-200. In fact, I’d say as far as primes go…I used a 50mm a lot, BUT I would have preferred a 35mm 1.4. People tend to cluster in tight spaces and backing up isn’t always an option.
is shutter lag an issue for you with a7? my a7rii with SAL2470Z2 has significant shutter lag compare to a77 and a77ii. not a problem for landscape but wildlife could be an issue.
I didn’t notice it- although I wasn’t shooting anything fast moving where it normally shows up. My best pics actually came off the A77II- which goes to show….good glass is way more important. The processional was like machine gun style and the A77II nailed it no prob. I just like the balance of the bigger bodies. For weddings I use all big glass anyway. I had the grip on the A7 plus the adapter so like, not small at all. Hehe.
My A7rII gets some lag too, with SSM F2.8 zooms on LA-EA3. The reason is the aperture! If you shoot relatively open, it is much faster than when you stop down to say F8.
My experience mirrors yours. AF not the best but its not bad enough that it frustrates me too much.
I however have an additional gripe which is the flash shoe which gives issues in high humidity like in my country. My A7 II has some green mould on the contacts and my TTL flashes work in manual mode only.
My A7 doesn’t have any green stuff but the flash gives trouble from time to time. This is the rainy season and so humidity is extremely high this time.
That is far more irritating than AF issues. I may have to shoot all manual flash or shoot without flash. Not a very appealing scenario.
Although I haven’t had that issue, I’ve read about this a few times. Cases I’ve read say just a drop of water on the hotshoe and it shorts out or something.
I mostly do off camera flash lately. For on body, I used a Metz 44 AF which is going back. I need a bigger flash without the plastic mount. That’s just begging to get broken. The flash issue might do me in. I’m just now really getting into it..although I have strobes and what not. Those contacts on the flash are just begging to be bent. Even if I’m using non-native flash (I have a few of those) they never sit flush in the mount.
Sony IMO screwed up that design. It’s forward thinking while taking two steps back. Nothing pro about the design. I think Sony has lost customers over this. No issues thus far, but if they do occur….I certainly won’t be tolerating that.
mis shoe is retarded …
you could try getting a fibre glass pen to clean the contacts, but be careful its not a nice solution, as you get tiny shards of glass
I tried with a lenspen. No luck. Don’t want to try with anything more rougher. Will send it to Sony after the rainy season and see what the damages are. 🙁
I did couple weddings on A7rII, mostly using 35/1.4 and 55/1.8 on it while having 70-200/2.8G on A850 as the secondary camera. Would have used 85/1.8, but i’m still waiting for the bloody thing to ship!
Anyway, battery life is not great, but tolerable, on a 1pm-1am wedding I used 4 batteries (with around 20% remaining on each, cause I did not want to miss shots because of dead battery). But that’s with most shots on A7rII and much less on A850, which used less than 50% of it’s battery.
Some tips about battery life that helped the next wedding:
– Instead of switching camera on and off, just set it to sleep sooner. It wakes up from sleep pretty fast, and does not seem to consume whole lot of power while in sleep;
– Turn the pre-focus off.
As for 24-70/2.8 – with dual camera setup I actually prefer 35/1.4 or 55/1. I will keep 24-70/2.8 to be used on A7rII with LA-EA3, primarily for when I only want to use one camera.
Now, give some kind of A9 with even better AF, faster processing and dual card slots. Then I can completely switch to E-mount with that as main camera and A7rII as the secondary 🙂
I don’t think we see the A7sII until next year – again announced at NAB. Just wait for the wave of whiners when the price spikes to $3200+.
A99II is just a dream…
Loxia 25/2 I think…. will we see Loxia 85/2 when there is Batis 85/1.8 and new 85/1.4 is coming? Small Loxia 85/2 is what I need 🙂
4/85mm is more likely. They don’t have any faster 85mm designed for range finder.
Please Zeiss, we need a 18 or 21 Distagon design Loxia 🙂
As someone familiar with lens design – Here are the current possibilities
based on Loxia “philosophy”:
– Loxia 2,8/15 based
on Distagon design – Fantastic sublime lens with price north of 4600 USD. (Are YOU willing to pay that much ?)
– Loxia 4/18 based
on Distagon design – Good quality, price around 1500 USD.
– Loxia 2,8/18 based
on Biogon design – Horrible corner smearing, possible color casts, softness, price around 1000 USD and Zeiss will NEVER produce it (in E mount) for the obvious reasons.
– Loxia 2,8/21 based
on Biogon design – Good quility and a price around 1400 USD.
There are NO other options for the current Loxia range !
Trust me, I’m an engineer 🙂
Where’s my 135 f2 🙁
That’s the next Batis, they should have announced, but due to high demand on the two current ones, it was delayed to not worsen the situation.
What about a7III? I would love an a7III with some of the features from a7RII at half the price. That would be a killer camera.
Sony will milk the people paying full price as much as possible before they update the A7 II. 🙁
Once they see sales drying up of the A7r II they will launch the A7 III with maybe faster AF and an update to the 24 MP sensor with BSI and 4k but without all the fancy video specs that would reduce the price to sub $2k where the A7 II was initially launched at.
How dare a company try to make money on its products!
To be fair he could be referring to actually milking of those with mammary glands.
I’m willing to put money on it- A7III will have touch screen. You heard it here first!
I think it’s a bit early to be asking for an A7II replacement, even for Sony.
Original A7 announced – Oct 2013
A7II announced – Nov 2014.
If they stick to this cycle, there may be an announcement in Nov/Dec 2015.
Last time I checked, we were still in August 🙂
I think it’s unlikely they’ll replace it in a year again. There isn’t that much consistency in their new model release dates when you look a bit closer at their range, with the exception of their Cybershot cameras (eg. RX100 series).
Sportsmans bet: We won’t see an A7II replacement until next year.
“Last time I checked, we were still in August :-)”
I was responding to the title of the article. Not what date it is now. 🙂
The A7II still sells on full price.
WTF does an alien need with a Sony A7III?
Just doing a study for my college on how far you lowly earthians can advance in a year.
waiting for a99II
give me a 24 – 105 f/4!
Canon’s 24-105 f4 is pretty sweet. A bit soft wide open, but performs admirably. It would be pretty big on an FE.
A9 is more likely than A99
What’s the purpose of this list? Reads more like a wishlist rather than a rumor round up.
How much wide will be the “Loxia wideangle”?
The wider they can get is 15mm 2.8 Distagon
They also have:
– 4/18mm
– 2.8/21mm
– 4.5/21mm
– 2.8/25mm
– 2.8/28mm
Imagine a Zeiss 12mm with f4, that would be damn nice 😀
10mm 1.8 please.
I want… will be nice 2.0. Buf fiseye F4 is ok.
When I talked to a Zeiss guy at PK14 about the Loxia concept, and I tried to get some info from him. He apologized that he could not give me official information, but asked me what my wish would be.
When I said that I would assume a Loxia Distagon 18 or 21, he just smiled, and mentioned I would probably think into the right direction.
Let’s hope for one of the both. I personally would prefer 18mm.
Perhaps we’ll see a Loxia Biogon 18 or 21, not a Distagon… 🙂
Funny. Designing a Biogon at 18mm would be a very BAD idea.
(However Biogon design at 21mm is viable.)
You really should study a little bit before posting. (and I
do not mean that in a mean way.)
Both have their pros and cons, but I would prefer a Distagon. 🙂
1mm f/1.0 It will be called the Loxia One Wide (or LOW for short)
i want 70-200 f2.8 and a new less shitty 16-35, with f2.8 .
obviously you never really used the sony/zeiss 16-35 f4. It’s a fantastic lens. if you call that lens shitty, you have no clue what you’re doing. And please don’t start with “bokeh”.
It is overpriced for what it is. Corners are very soft wide open, chromatic aberration sucks, and there is a ton of distortion. They charge an absurd amount of money for mediocre performance, and it’s only an F4. Should be a 2.8 at that price. I stand by saying it is a shitty lens (relatively speaking).
If Sony can make next generation E-mount AF system competitive to DSLR there will be little sense in any A-mount camera. That is just a matter of electronics development while human capabilities remain limited.
They must have at least one APS-C and FF body, at least until they get every focal lenght that A-mount covers today.
Should be easy to them to make a DSLR sized A7RII and A6000
Overstated. Pro’s are getting pro shots with DSLR already. FE changes nothing for those who are really using their equipment. Most of the hype is marketing. It’s all about the glass anyway, and not enough people want to drop 1k plus with zero third party options. Let’s not even mention Sony’s MIS which plagues both mounts.
A Mount makes sense when we are talking about long tele lenses. A7r II, and a 500mm, dont make sense
That’s assuming they lock themselves into existing ZM designs. The Loxias are not 1:1 ports from the ZM Biogon / Distagon designs. I’d hope to see a 25/2 and 85/2 next, personally.
I think it’s the easiest and safest path for them, they have a whole range of great and known designs just a matter of chip and adapt them.
Without the RF design limitations they might be able to make UWA and Super-tele Loxias but that means more money on R&D. Unless they already have some of those ready in the past.
What about the possible Sony a7III in December?
Will come for sure, because they plan to announce the A7RIII at Photokina next year.
Together with the RX100V and the RX10III.
Along that they will bring three new FE lenses, a 35/2, a 50/2.8 and a 85/2.8
All we’ve been waiting for!
🙂
Teleconverter for video? adapter?
It is a good lens. Not so much with the a7r but certainly with the a6000. Cost me an arm and leg but I genuinely have no regrets.
1) Large enough not to overheat
2) fully articulatable screen
3) TOUCHSCREEN, TOUCHSCREEN, TOUCHSCREEN!
4) Even higher ISO (because I’d love even greater flexibility to use higher F stops in low light environments)
5) built-in ND filter
6) even better AF in 4k video mode.
5) built-in ND filter:
I was always wondering why no camera manufacturer can extend the ISO-range down to 1 or 0.5…
“…show the A-mount system is well alive…” Hahahahahahaha you crack me up. 😛
If you say so…last time I went to the stadium, I saw at least 5 photogs with 1DX and D4S/D3S/D4…There is clearly a market for that. Not too many photogs with cameras seen on Best Buy.
Read the comments, people want Sony to take on the 1DX/D4S market. They want the a7S to be the next 1DX/D4S competitor, or they want an A-mount camera to take on the challenge.
I’m quite curious how a high end a9 would cost. The A7r2 already costs like 3200 dollars lol.
I just wish they would throw the A7Rii sensor into an A mount body without the SLT mirror, i’d be sold.
Why not buy a emount with adapter then? Amount without mirror is kinda useless 🙂
More native lens selection, especially 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8. I have no need for a small size camera.
It’s possible they sticked to tweaked ZM designs initially to be able to swiftly provide A7x shooters something. The future Loxias may be whole new stuff. Who knows? Mirrorless FF is still something new, and will most likely grow.
People, don’t expect cheap cameras with this new revolutionary sensor.
Sony are making some of the cheapest full frame cameras, which says a lot about the cost of the sensor itself. Even if they decide to sell it to their long time partners (Nikon, Pentax) bodies would cost in the range of $4k – $5k range, e.g. from Nikon.
This is the first and still the only BSI full frame sensor. This allows for the huge resolution without affecting low light and dynamic range capability.
Then the 399 Phase Detect sensor sites are far more, and better spread, than any DSLR will ever have. This enables way better Eye AF and other features that for the first time demonstrate in a practical setting the strategic advantages of mirror-less technology. And it will only get better with future refinement.
I am sure that Nikon can squeeze 10-20% more quality and performance out of this sensor if Sony decides to sell it to them, perhaps they can even base their first “serious” mirror-less camera on it.
I’m not holding my breath for the A6100/A7000 vaporcamera. I have a hunch it’s not going to happen at all. Ever. Sony wants to convert us all to FF believers and they don’t seem to give an excrement about their installed APS-C user base.
Are you seriously that dilusional? The A6000 is only 18 months old. For the changes people are talking about, a 24month turnaround from spec sheet to production is nothing short of a miracle. My guess is 4k is causing heating issues during product validation on the prototype. So those issues will need to be solved before it goes into production.
But they can’t simply leave out the APSC market. The A5100 and A6000 are around $500-600. Full frame start at $1000(A7). They can’t simply expect the market to jump up in price by double, that’s unrealistic. APSC cameras will always be cheaper because you can get 4 times as many good sensors from a wafer as you can full frame. The cameras will also be lighter and smaller, and high iso performance is adequate for most people.
The only “usable” A7 is A7Rii. The others simply are way to slow on AF – much slower than the cheap A6000 or A5100.
And the A7Rii is way too expensive (and for some way too big) to convert all E-mount users to FE-mount users. Some of this people might jump ship to m43 before converting to FE.
There is no FE mount.
Sony already makes those lens in A-mount use those adapters that you e-mount shooters always brag about!
Yes, but I want native lenses. Adapters are not a good solution for me.
So why then should someone who shoots A-mount have to settle for stupid adapters? I own 15 A-mount lens I don’t want nothing to do with adapters too! Sony give me the A99m2!
Funny, but I don’t think so.
Can someone tell me when we can expect the A7RIII? It seems like it’s already been forever and I’m worried it might never get released.
Some weeks before the release from a7rIII you can feel certain on SAR gives 500 Rumors about a7rIII. After the release gives 1000 qualities tests from the camera.
November a7sII- Till now is not one rumor from the camera. And Canon release Dec./Jan. the 5dIV and possibility a mirrorles fullframe camera. I don’t think the a7sII comes before the Canon’s. But I hope we have concrete rumors from the a7sII in Nov./Dez.
All the samples and reviews I have seen have been positive about the lens. It compares favorably with other 16-35mm lenses.
If the lens was about $200-300 cheaper I would be less harsh but I expect near flawless performance from an f4 zoom lens at that price. Compared to the 16-35 canon f2.8 ii the Sony is just bad.
I agree that the pricing is high, it should be in line with Canon’s 16-35 f4 ($200 cheaper as you suggest), but the lens itself is still a good performing lens independent of price.
Sony tends to keep their body prices lower than the competition but lens prices higher.
Not sure what Sony is doing, but I hope they figure it out.
I hope SONY will make a lightweight FE 11-24mm to beat canon!!
They already did it kinda with 10-18 F4 which is usable within 12-17 at fullframe 🙂
Could you give a link where the diff is and why biogon 18 would be bad? 🙂
sony A9 FE mount would be awesome with 2 SD card slots, Pro Sync (x) contact, new speedlight for it which can be used wireless remote not with infrared like the HVL-60, water resistant, global shutter, or heaven leaf shutter like in a RX-1, RX-2 with hopefully a little ZOOM 35-60 , 85 FE Sony G, 135 mm Sony G FE; 24 mm SONY G lense,. Thats nearly all I need :-))
I’m really looking forward for the new sensor of A6100/A7000. If the rumor is true, it will be used in next Fuji cameras 🙂
