(SR2) Rumors posted by our reader Animalsbarry (A77 successor, Foveon, Z-shift and more).

Long time SAR reader AnimalsBarry claims to have gotten some reliable info from one of his “sources”. I had the chance to talk with him and I told him I would post the rumors with SR2 only because I don’t know if I can trust his source. That’s why you have to take it with a grain of salt. Here is what he writes:

“A sony manager just actually called me to share this info so it is sr5
A79..will be 32mp
Ff cameras will be 24 and 36mp a mount
Hybrid camera will have z shift
Stacked sensor will probably be early to mid 2015 not late 2015
Ospdaf in future cameras will work with most 3rd party lenses including tamron and sigma..so high speed af will be available
This comes from a high level sony us manager and you can safely call this sr5
Big announcement in next couple of weeks..a lot of this info will be released then
Barry”

Thanks AnimalsBarry!

SAR note: All I can say with an SR5 reliability is, yes there is an announcement scheduled in a couple of weeks (4K camera), and yes there will be an A77 successor (but I am not sure if it will come with the next announcement).

  1. What does “Stacked sensor will probably be early to mid 2015 not late 2015” mean? Announcement, release, or in stock? Since I’m not satisfied with the current 2 FE bodies maybe I’ll stick with my NEX-7 until then?

    1. What makes you unhappy with the FE bodies? I have my eye on the new A6000, but every now and then I think of the A7, so I would be curious to hear your experience.

      1. Well, first of all both models need mirrorless grade burst, the current burst speed is as slow as any DSLR, that needs to flap the mirror. Since there’s no E-mount IBIS, shooting many frames of the same subject could be another way to get usable pictures under a low shutter speed. I’m still looking at using more legacy lenses over native FE lenses, the only one that interests me so far is the 55, but unfortuately I’ve already got a Contax 50/1.4 which is perfectly fine at the moment and budget is limited so switching is not high on my priority list.
Anyway nothing I’ll be using in the near future will have OSS so I need that burst as compensation.
I used NEX-7’s burst about a month ago on a high speed railway on my way to Beijing, it actually needed shutter speeds of 1/500s+ ensure clear shots, it was cloudy and at f/8, 1/1000s was the maximum speed I could get even under daylight (base ISO of course), but with NEX-7’s high speed burst and actually panning the camera to follow the landscape I eventually got some clear shots under 1/100s at ISO800, at dusk.
I like a7R’s full metal body, and low-pass-less sensor, but need a7’s EFC (a7R’s shutter is much too loud for me).
And they really need to improve battery life.
I’d prefer a better body design too.

        1. Thank you for the explanation! I guess with the Nex7 you are not too drawn to the A6000 (also 24 Mp) but that AF system seems quite promising, plus you have a different form factor from the FF bodies. Of course, you would lose Tri-Navi. Cheers.

    2. Dont know..he was not that specific
Many of the things we discussed were deliberately vaque because they are not official anouncements.

      1. Alright. Weird though if this information is very recent that there’s nothing about what Andrea mentioned about new FF bodies in April? Or do you mean that the April bodies are A-mount…

        1. 3 new A mount cameras
2 ff cameras will be comparble to the a7 and a7r..24 an 36mp
A neww C will replace the A77 and be 32mp
There will also be a surprise.
There will be an anouncement in April.
I was not told any more specific timeframe than that.
Remember sony wants to assure us they are commited to A mount
They do not want us to know too much.

          1. I don’t want to wait any longer for a new body, but I’m far from satisfied with the current 2, and I can’t take A-mount… This is such a letdown…
            I guess I’ll get a dp1 Quattro sooner than I get this NEX-7 replaced…

  2. Thats the most great feature if that ospdaf will work on any alpha lens, as im living on both A&E world.
any LA-EA4 successor with no mirror and fully utilizing ospdaf?

    1. Deja vu…. “12 MP is too much”… “16 MP is too much”… “24 MP is too much”… now “32 MP is too much”. Just wait and see, how the noise will ACTUALLY be. Please also note, that from 24 to 32 is a small step and the pixels will only be minimally smaller.

    2. Mathematically speaking, overall noise for any given output resolution is effectively independent of the sampling resolution for a given form fact and comparable technology (like QE being constant and the full well capacity per given unit of area being comparable). Of course, there are limits – at very high resolution the basic performance of the sensor may be compromised due to increases of heat, higher read noise and so on. However, as these are dealt with you come back to the basis of statistical analysis and photon densities.

Of course noise at higher output resolution will be higher, but that’s a tradeoff. Analysis of recent sensors has shown clearly that (at constant output resolution) there has been no increase in noise and there is the option, in the right conditions, for higher resolution.

There is also another advantage of high MP densities and that is, as pixel density gets close to lens resolution, colour fidelity becomes better and the need for AA filters becomes less. The statement, that higher pixel densities lead to more noise is a simplistic myth that has well and truly been blown.

And no, comparing the noise performance of a very high density camera-phone density with that of an FF sensor is not valid. It has to be be done for a constant form-factor as it is that which dictates how many photons can be detected for a given level of technology.

    3. If the sensor is similar to the gapless design incorporated in the A7r, then noise will not be an issue as sensor surface area will also not be an issue.

  3. I have gotten some reliable info from a sony executive:
    1. Their on sensor phase detection technology already matched SLT technology
    2. They don’t want to dominate the DSLR or Mirrorless market.
    3. The coming A77 successor is actually a apsc e-mount in a dslr type body with in body stabilization.
    4. A-mount lens with SSM and SAM will work perfectly with adaptor.
    5. All future lens from Sony will be E-mount, many of them hass OSS.
    6. A99 successor, A9, will be e-mount and no in body stabilization
    7. A9000 will also be e-mount and no in body stabilization.
    8. Sony will sell their sensors with on sensor phase detection technology to competitors.
    9. No such thing as Z-shift… sensors and circuit board are heavy.
    10. FE 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA & FE 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA are in development, both will have OSS.
. A-mount will be dead, E-mount will live.

    1. Ok… So the A77 successor is going to be e-mount in DSLR body with no body stabilization (BS) BUT the A99 successor is going to be e-mount (I presume possibly in DSLR body) but with no body stabilization? The A99 is the top of the line FF DSLR camera – I would expect BS in the A99.

Or maybe this info is BS since we know Sony is releasing a lot of different information because of the leaks in the past

It just seems that at the moment high level managers or executives are telling people what they are about to release – which I find hard to believe since Sony is trying hard to clamp down on leaks.

      1. And I have a top secret
information from a heating repairman who was there repairing their heating
when they had a meeting and he said. Sony is going to quit A-mount business and
        leave it to Hasselblad.

    1. I agree. Sony high level managers or executive will not just “ring-up” and reveal this information. Unless it is mis-information – to try & cause more problems with leaks.

      1. I believe the reason for feeding us tidbits of info and hints was the “one year aniversary of the last A mount anouncenent”
I told Sony there was a lot of concern on the forums about A mount being discontinued and she told me…after a bit of time on hold…that my call would be returned…which it was.
They wanted to assure us of thier commitment to A mount.

        1. The field teams are already in full swing showcasing both e and a mounts equally as much as possible, reminding people that the most recent A-mount lenses have been of the professional variety, most of them full-frame. I simply don’t see the need for a phone call.

    2. It’s only because the source is unknown to the admin, there’s no proof that it’s right but there’s also no proof that it’s wrong, at least Barry trusts that source.

  4. If it’s true, that’s very good news re 3rd party lenses… Andrea – have any your sources hinted at a new 24mp ff a-mount body?

    1. Not necessarily, even a slight sensor design improvement may compensate for the smaller pixel surface- The 36MP A7R is less noisy than the 24MP A7 (for the whole picture-not per pixel); I am more concerned about the optical design of the micro lenses
that tend to be problematic and smear the picture mostly in the corners.

      1. The new A mount C will have new processin therfore substantially less noise and although the sensor itself may or may not be faster the USABLE iso range will be greater.

        1. Is it going to be of the same technology of the A6000 that is less noisy than the NEX-7 by about 20% or more advanced?
Is it going to be the base for the NEX-7 successor (which the A6000 is not)?

          1. Dont know..my question was about the new jpg engine and the answer was about superior low light and selective noise reduction.

          2. You should not expect there’ll be a NEX-7 successor. Sony clearly said the A6000 replaces both NEX-6 and 7! IMHO they’re now working on new lenses for E and A mounts and new A-mount cameras.

          3. I quote Steve Huff: “I speak with Sony directly..they told me this replaces the NEX-6 and NOT the NEX-7. This leads me to believe there will be another model soon with maybe more advancement and more cost but not sure on that one. I just know what I was told..that this replaces the NEX-6, not NEX-7. Their words “sites just under the NEX-7 and replaces the NEX-6″. “

      2. The smearing of the corners in the A7 system is not caused by micro lenses, it’s caused by wideangle rangefinder lenses that are not native to the E-mount being adapted to a system the lenses were never technically built for. The lenses optimized for the e-mount may occasionally have some vignetting and, if they’re lower grade, softening in the corners… but smearing, no.

  5. Can someone with better math skills than me. Tell me what is the Pixel Density of this APS-C 32mp will be ? And what current SONY sensor would that be similar to ??? The one in the RX10?

    1. How about using a pocket calculator?

      pixel per square millimeter:
      20MP Cybershot approx. 750k
      20MP 1″ (RX10,RX100) approx. 172k
      24MP APSC approx. 65.600
      32MP APSC approx. 87.500
      24MP FF approx. 27.800
      36MP FF approx. 41.700

Directly compared to the RX10 the new 32MP APSC would have half the density.

      1. ‘My calculator says’ that I stopped waiting for A77 successor.

Sony could’t master noise in APS-C 24Mpix cameras and they are going to produce 32Mpic one’s.?? 🙁 It so mad.

There was so loud roumor about great high ISO pictures before A77 was released. And the A99 wit the same story.

My patience have ended. I don’t trust sony anymore.

        1. High ISO on a99 is solid. It’s not industry-leading, but it is good. I would say it is a stop worse than the Canon 1d-x and about a half stop versus the 5d3. So the sensor is about on par with the 5d3 if you take away the SLT light loss and the gain the camera adds to compensate for it. On the flip side, low ISO (below 400) is the best, probably because the SLT acts as a 1/2 ND filter at the low ISO speeds.

        2. Really? Have you stopped waiting for a 7DMkII or a D400s? Because if not, you’ve been patiently waiting a full 2 years longer than the Sony user has been waiting for the A77v to be replaced. TWO. YEARS. LONGER.

          Quite whining.

Also the A99v is more than respectable at high ISO not to mention the fact that the rest of its feature mix means the 1/3 stop loss from the translucent mirror is more than made up for by the fact that the camera’s capabilities are superb.

  6. 9.
with IBIS, sensor travels at much higher velocities than discussed Z-shift.
there are a lot of moving electronics, and lens elements in e.g. 50/1.8 are much heavier than APS-C sensor.

  7. Well AnimalsBarrie reputation is on stake here. If we don’t hear all this info from Sony in next 4 weeks – than it will be official that AnimalsBarrie is a liar.

    1. Your statement is ridiculous. He is lying only if he is intentionally attempting to mislead. Sharing information from the person he spoke with, whether the informations turns out to be true or false does not make Barry a soothsayer or a liar. If you haven’t noticed, you visited a rumor site.

      1. Yea, let’s blur responsibility so that everyone could talk BS under an excuse or “relaying information from some highly-positioned source in Sony that cannot be mentioned”.

        1. Keeping sources confidential is standard operating procedure for every news outlet in the world. This is not even a news site, you do know what a rumor is I suppose (too much?).

          1. Doesn’t change the fact that now animalsbary is branding these rumors with his own name on his own will, and his own reputation is on a stake here – just like a reputation of news outlets is at stake when they post a rumor or go to curt sued by parties interested.

So don’t try to hid animalsbary behind some silly excuses.

          2. Branding them? He submitted it and the admin chose to publish it. The title states it is SR2. There is not much in the way of credibility on the line when something is published with the SR2 codicil.

    1. The talk about the “stacked sensor” is often equated to a Foveon-esque technology. None of the major brands will ever, ever buy into Foveon themselves but that doesn’t mean that Sony may not have a trick or two up their sleeve where stacked sensors are concerned. Sony are widely and rightly considered the kings of sensor design and fabrication, I don’t doubt that if there’s something to be had, they’ll find it. But the Foveon design is archaic and, while it brings to the table some lovely work at low ISOs, the fanatical following notwithstanding, the tech has far, far to go before it makes it into the every day paradigm.

      1. 1. “foveon” in this context is X3, and as i know sony has some patents in this realm.

        2. stacked sensors have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with X3 (foveon-like) sensors. these are completely different technologies.

i suppose admin just made a mistake in the header.

  8. “Ospdaf in future cameras will work with most 3rd party lenses including tamron and sigma..so high speed af will be available”

That makes this rumour BS. This will NOT happen. There is absolutely no way that Sony will create a lens database in firmware for third-party lenses, especially Sigma who don’t even pay Sony for the lens mount license!

      1. Sigma reverse engineer the A-mount and have done so since the Minolta days. It’s why their lenses need to be sent back for re-chipping when Minolta/Sony have made changes. The most recent being Sigma HSM lenses not working on the SLTs.

If Sigma lenses were properly licensed, like Tamron, then there would not be these compatibility issues.

        1. Shoot. Sigma had plenty of problems on my Nikon gear back in the day. The HSM lenses (especially my 70-200 which was otherwise sharp as a tack and captured gorgeous color) would simply stop focusing and we’d have to do the whole battery out, battery in, on, off reset situation and the lens would reset and then work for a little while longer… there’s only so much of that and Sigma telling me that this is essentially just the way things are that I could take. I was needing to go full frame at the time any way so I looked at jumping ship. Got an A900 and some Zeiss glass. Rest is history. And to be fair… it’s true, I’ve never owned a third party lens since that wasn’t pre 1979 and all manual.

    1. Actually that would make sense if they’re binning the mirror. My understanding is they have the database to reconcile the data from ospdaf and mirror pdaf. If there’s only going to be 1 source of pdaf data, they shouldn’t need a database. If they still need a database then I agree it’s BS – the a99 database uses lensid so it would never work with 3rd party lenses (as they share ids)

      1. There are two ways to make this work. Either use a default calibration profile when an unknown lens is attached or revert to a closed-loop system. Neither option is ideal, but it would be a stop gap until Sony comes up with a better solution.

While judgement should be reserved until the A77 successor is officially announced, the fact that they seem to be including AF-D (based on inclusion of OSPDAF) speaks to the fact that Sony is not able to overcome the limits of the pellicle mirror to further improve AF on SLT.

If that’s the case, then this is a problem Sony will need to solve in some way. The problem isn’t just with third-party lenses, but also with legacy Minolta lenses as well.

        1. Thanks – that’s helpful. Not great news for me though – my only Sony lens is the 16-50 (everything else is Sigma or Minolta)

        2. The other way to solve the problem is to provide for the user to enter the proper lens ID. That wouldn’t be automatic, but would do the job.

I do agree that this talk from Sony (if indeed it turns out to be factual) seems to indicate the continuing use of the slt. The real issue here is not whether ospdf will work with third-party lenses, but whether the very considerable promise of AF-D for tracking can be realized–and AF-D is a technique that requires a hybrid ospdaf/pdaf system, possible only with slt.

    2. When I brought up the fact that ospdaf ..high speed focusin.. only works with some sony lenses and no 3rd party lenses..and native E mount lenses..
I was told sony is aware of the problem and is fully commited to supporting 3rd party lenses..we depend on them…
Future sony cameras have fast focusing.. that will work on most non sony lenses…about 75% of all lenses made.
Will it sopport Sigma and Tamron?
..pause..shufling of papers.. Yes those manufacturers are among the ones that will be fully supported.
He did not say which new cameras or when.
He also gave me no details about how this would be done.
It was also not specified if he was talking about a new ospdaf or some newer better system.

  9. I don’t understand why they would push 32 megapixels when there are no lenses around that even get close to 24 mp resolution on APS-C. 24 mp sensor, no AA filter and no translucent mirror would be fine with me.

    1. The only reason lenses are not rated higher than todays sensors is that they are tested using existing test scales on todays caneras.
The results CANNOT exceed the resolution of the cameras they were tested on but many lenses exceed that resolution by orders of magnatude.

      1. That is A reason, not the ONLY reason. Some lenses exist that can exceed the resolution of existing sensors, and many that cannot.

BTW, I believe you are misusing the term “orders of magnatude[sic]”. An order of magnitude is 10x better, and orderS would be >100x. I do not believe there are any lenses that could support 10x more than today’s sensors. Even a perfect lens with no optical aberrations will be diffraction limited.

        1. Aparently I have exagerated slightly so replace orders of magnitude with much higher resolution
Diffraction limit is misused here as thiss is an edge effect in a lens caused by the edges of the diaphram.
Use of thin metal flat plates with various size precise round centerd holes in the is a method used in precision optics and old cameras to virtually eliminate diffraction.
F stops of up to f64 and greater were commonly used.

  10. Sorry, but this is ridiculous.

animalsbybarry claimed a Sony exec (his words!) called him. Tell me, how likely is it that a company exec would, a) personally call a Sony customer and b) leak upcoming product information to that customer?

I think either this Sony exec was nothing of the sort and animalsbybarry has been duped, or animalsbybarry’s well documented narcissistic behaviour and obsessions are crossing over into creating fantasies.
If this really did happen, then I’m sure animalbybarry will not mind sharing this executive’s name.

  11. Yes, the rumor is bs. But I’m more interested in Andrea’s addendum– earlier he said that the A79 would be the next camera announcement. Now it’s a non-a-mount 4k coming next? And no a79 until…….?

    1. 4k is a top priority for Sony so it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s fast-tracked. A reviewer for the a7 talked to a member of Sony’s engineering team who told him they tried to release the a7 and/or a7R (can’t recall which or if both) doing 4k but they ran into overheating problems. Point being, they already tried a 4k e-mount and failed. Not unbelievable they fixed the problem and will rush it to market as an e-mount especially if they’ve reached an impasse in a-mount development.

As I’ve said in the past, it’s pretty obvious Sony is struggling on which direction the a79 will take with rumors of multiple prototypes using both mirrorless and SLT tech. Delays are inevitable.

Personally, I still expect Sony is done for e-mount bodies for 2014 and will likely release 2 a-mount bodies, the a79 and a FF. We won’t see the a79 before June and I wouldn’t expect the FF until fall.

    2. the non A-mount 4K camera is the definitve version of the prototype shown at NAB last year. It’s basically a video camera in a DSLR body shape like what Canon did with the 1D C (body of the 1D X with the guts of a C100). It’s a PZ mount which is not a mount (already explain that in other post, look at google) so its a A & E mount camera.
It’s gonna be a P5 in a DSLR shape and it will probably be shown at NAB in march and it’s link to the Sony’s professionnal video camera division and not directly to imaging but it’s an interesting beast since it will give us a hint of that hybrid A&E mount Andrea talk about a few time already.

      1. NAB 4k DSLR-alike prototype had an A-mount + that proprietary Sony mount on top of that. Sony representatives specifically stated that it had an A-mount.

        1. The prototype featured the FZ mount from the Sony F5 video camera with an a-mount adapter and SAL. 24-70mm lens. Sony still has not actually released an FZ to A-mount adapter, so who knows if the camera was just a non-functioning mock-up.

  12. Hey Andrea,

Any closer to some RX2 news? You’ve mentioned a few times lately that they are focusing on “FE and RX cameras right now”. I am DYING to know any info you might have.

    Thanks!

  13. Wow! This is a slow news day. ;^)

People are really piling on Barry. Best I can tell, even if he lied about talking to a Sony exec his rumor is pretty much a rehash of rumors posted on SAR. It’s believable to me he talked to some sales manager who’s ‘leaking’ some rumors floating around the Sony lunch room. Of course, we’ve all worked at places where rumors floated around the water cooler. To what degree were they accurate? To be frank, whether we’re getting a rumor from a regional sales manager or some online customer service rep it’s pretty much all the same level of baloney. It’s not like members of the engineering teams developing this stuff are leaking anything real here.

    1. My info is based on this conversation and is very recent.
The fact that it matches previous SAR info is because SAR knew it before me or that I have utilzed existing reliable SAR info to help interpret the meaning of “hints”
If both SAR and me are accurate then of course our info will be the same.

  14. I did have a long conversation with a Sony individual who I believe to be a Sony executive.
The statements I have been making the last few days are things that were discussed.
Some were said directly and others more general.
I believe what I say to be true however If I have been mislead or if I have missinterpretted any facts it is not deliberate on my part.

Some SAR readers like to critisize me no matter what I say and seem to be very upset that I am sharing these rumors with you but most of you will realize that these individuals consistently follow my comments and try to make me look bad whenever possible. Some people enjoy my comments but not everyone does. I can only ignore those comments because I have not been able to discourage them, nor do I wish to discuorsge then from making more productive comments.

Thank you Sony for adressing our concerns and all the good A mount stuff to come.

    Barry

      1. So what made you “believe” he was a Sony executive? I sense some backtracking.
Maybe you could be a bit more transparent about the circumstances leading up to this conversation. It is in your interest to be fully transparent, because if any of this turns out to be untrue it is you that will cop the flak.
Quite frankly, I just don’t trust you. This could all turn out to be false information (from your imagination), and I have no doubt that if it turns out to be false we are in for months of posts from you about how Sony executives lied to you.

          1. You know the A79 is being tested by professional photographers currently. If you go over the Sochi Olympics footage again there are three or four A-Mount cameras being used without any model markings.

        1. “I do not intend to answer any questions about the identity of my source.”
Oh Jesus, get over yourself. You’re not in a James Bond film.
You claim to have spoken to a Sony executive. If that executive was willing to give you this information, then it is hardly top secret. As far as I’m aware, you have no more right to secret information from Sony than any of the rest of us here.

          1. SAR never gives us names either. Never seen you fill your diapers over that and demand answers. Barry’s rumor is as credible as anything along a similar vein in SAR and pretty much rehashes same. So give the Barry bashing a rest.

          2. 1. SAR gets information from many sources that are cross-confirmed before posting.
            2. SAR sources post rumors for Sony fans. Therefore they stay anonymous. Gentleman (?) here posts stuff for his own ego and having better PR in SAR community after it went down the hill in last few weeks thanks to other BS he told.
            3. Barry’s rumor isn’t creditable at all. Anyone, literally: anyone could fabricate identical “”rumor”” the fact that what he says about this supposed “talk with Sony representative” stays in direct opposition to some other SR5 rumors makes whole situation only more embarrassing to him.
            4. Why we should give it a rest? If someone talks BS on a public scene then he should expect crowd slapping him in a head.

          3. I’d recommend giving it a rest because the Barry bashers appear to me to be the ones masturbating their egos here. ;^)

Based on what Barry said, it looks like he called support and got a call back from a sales manager at some level. I have no idea about who SAR’s sources are but he can confirm with multiple ones all he wants – and I mean no offense to SAR – but so many of them are obvious BS.

How many folks here whine to SAR for dribbles of SR2 rumors so Barry gives us one and people pile on to kill the messenger? Pack of hypocrites, I’d say!

          4. “Based on what Barry said, it looks like he called support and got a call back from a sales manager at some level”.
That’s the point. Barry specifically said “executive”, which is very different to Sales Manager. Which one it was has a direct impact on credibility of his story and the claims he made.

          5. I believe Barry, received a callback, and the sales or customer service rep probably accidentally spilled the beans on the A79.

          6. You didn’t have to read it, and you would have saved us all from having to read your ridiculous comments. Could you do all of us a favour and go somewheres else.

          7. @ Yup Butts Nope is clearly a TROLL, whose sole purpose is to harass Barry.

Butts clearly doesn’t understand the concept of “source protection”

            Butts go crawl away??

  15. 32mpx ! Thanks for Barry’s work, even if it’s not true, at least we got some A-mount news and low SR news. However…32MPX !! If it’s true, my poor beercan will produce crappy pictures. It is now just ok for 18 to 24 mpx with A4 paper. Sony needs a 70/210 F/4 soon.

    1. I’m quite impressed with mine on my a77 – it definitely looks like it out resolves the 55-300 and 70-300 USD when I’m pixel peeping. Not bad for a lens that’s nearly as old as me!

  16. I am not really as concerned about 32Mp in A79 (if rumour is true) as I am concerned about the ability of current A mount lenses to handle that quantity of pixels in APS-C size sensor. It is fine to compare with RX100 or RX10 but these cameras have lenses dedicated to that particular 1 inch sensor. I doubt that uprating to 32Mp will generate a better image with current lenses other than maybe the best CZ single focus ones.

    1. I’ve seen many rx10 samples and they have mediocre amounts of detail, I trust that current aps-c offerings outresolve the rx10.

    2. SAL1650 is perfectly capable of that at f/4. It easily outresolves 24mp sensor at that setting. Even at f2.8 it is capable of doing so in the centers.

  17. Much of this information confirms what the admin has been posting since last year. Of the rumored items, I am highly skeptical that z shift will be implemented for Autofocusing manual lenses but it does make sense in a hybrid camera (to switch from a to e flange distance). Otherwise, the other rumored items have been mostly rated SR4.

  18. But it’s the same info that has been circulating many weeks ago =/ and still, no info on new lenses for A-mount…

  19. Since AnimalBarry is an E-Mount hater and usually pollutes his A-Mount rumors into E-Mount news to disturb discussions there personally I would rank him SR1.

Well, but since Sony’s FullE-Mount is the most innovating photography development these days and photokina in September should point out future directions I think Andrea could spread some more fundamental rumors anyway…

      1. …and what does FE stand for? Never mind, if you’d tried to understand my posting itself without picking something to contradict, you’d known that I was talking about mirrorless FullFrame-E-Mount as the most innovating photography development on the market, but you’ve known that, don’t you?

    1. Based on your name and comment I assume you’re an e-mount lover. Fair enough but you’re in a moral snit over Barry talking a-mounts in posts on e-mounts. So what do you do? Start up a discussion on e-mounts in an a-mount post discussion thread. Really? See some irony? ;^)

      1. You might see this as an A-Mount post, but according to it’s title it’s an Animalsbarry post and my comment has been about some personal experiences I had with him here. Beside that I’m really interested into Sony’s future strategy and seriously suggested our Admin to post rumors about Sony’s fundamental directions expectable for photokina. Therefore I don’t see that irony you’re trying to construct.

    1. The sensor plane moves forward and backward on the Z axis, creating or closing distance between the sensor and the rear element. This allows the camera to use a-mount lenses by shifting sensor back, or E and FE mount lenses by shifting the sensor forward.

      1. I asked many questions about z shift fucusing on the new hybrid camera.
The camera will definitely have z shift but I was unable to get a definitive answer to if it will be used for focus.
My best GUESS BASED SOLELY ON HINTS is that the z shift will not be a fully funtional autofocus system but will do more than just accomodate different flange distances. Possibly some usefullness for close focus..but again that part is just my quess.
We did discuss camera shape and clearences for z shift movement but he gave away absolutely no facts on these subjects.

        1. Z shift can be used for focusing but it depends entirely on what set of tradeoffs you’re willing to make. The Contax AX (which I believe is the camera referenced in the “original posting” you speak of) did use Z-shift for focusing but the frame of reference is with manual focus lenses. In other words, “fast AF” means different things if what you’re comparing it to is manual focus as opposed to phase detection AF.

There may also be a tradeoff that needs to be made with other sensor movements, namely to support IBIS. If Z shift is used exclusively for registration distance correction and can be locked in place, that can provide a stable platform for IBIS to function. But if Z shift is more fluid, it may impact or render nonfunctional IBIS.

The possible outcomes, and tradeoffs, can be endless. Imagine combining Z-shift with an SLT mirror that can flip out of the way, for example, giving you a true SLT A-mount/E-mount hybrid.

      2. Z shift can potentially do some more interesting stuff, like allow fine tune focus adjustments across the entire sensor (as opposed to calibrating for a particular AF point), limited autofocus with manual focus lenses, and allow for close focus with E mount lenses (by moving the sensor back to the A mount position with an E mount lens attached, you effectively gain a virtual extension tube).

It remains to be seen how out of the box Sony decides to get, if this rumor is true at all.

    2. Theoretically it can enable some degree of autofocusing with manual focus lenses be shifting the sensor to focus.

    1. Foveon is an error
We are talking about a new technology 54mp 3layer x 18mp staxked organic silicon hybrid sensor probably to be anounced early to mid 2015
Incidently..canon has a possibly 120mp..not sure..sensor which they plan to release at the same time or slightly after the release of the sony sensor.
This new sony sensor will also be used in some competitors cameras not just sony cameras.

Sony has no desire to dominate the camera industry they want thier competitors to rmain sucessfull.

      1. Foveon is about the only way to significantly increase low light capability (without hurting high ISO performance, BTW): no more filters that reflects significant part of a light. Otherwise, we have stuck with ≈ISO3200 for FF sensor with current CMOS and it is unlikely something will change significantly.

        1. have you seen how bad the Foveon sensors in the Sigma DP range are at low light/high ISO ?. At low ISO they deliver super results but from 800 ISO the fall apart and pretty badly at that

      2. “Sony has no desire to dominate the camera industry they want thier competitors to rmain sucessfull.”

That sounds absurd. I’m sure they want their sensor customers to do well,
but otherwise I doubt Sony’s CEO warns his employees not to be overly
        successful.

        1. Its called common sense. Sony makes more money from selling sensors than interchangeable lens cameras. They probably don’t want to piss off the companies buying Sony sensors, for obvious reasons.

          1. Like I said, I’m sure they want their sensor clients (like Nikon) to do well (Sony goes out of its way to not alienate Nikon), but I’m also sure they would love to sell more cameras than Canon (which does not purchase sensors from Sony) and could care less about pissing off Canon.

Whoever said that they don’t want to dominate the camera industry…is using reasoning akin to a kid who is picked on stating that he won’t fight the bully who picks on him because he doesn’t want to hurt the bully too badly. It was just poor salesmanship spin for Sony’s distant 3rd place, in my opinion.

          2. Canon does purchase sensors from Sony..I was told this when discussing medium format.
Sony is the king of the medium format camera world.
All new mf cameras will be using sony sensors and sony does not have any of the hassles of making the cameras.
Sony is extatic about this situation and has absolutely no intention of developing thier own mf camera.
When the new stacked sens ok rs are released nikon will use sony sensor canon will use thier own.
Most camera makers will release a stacked sensor camera at about the same time.
            This is delibrate.

          3. I’m interested by this remark. Can you tell me which Canon cameras use Sony sensors? You also mention this in conjunction with medium format cameras. Does Canon have a medium format camera I’m not aware of?

            I’m not criticising, just curious.

          4. I was told they did but did not ask that question.
MF was a seperate statement and has nothing to do with canon.

          5. Some of the point&shoots. Stuff that needs high numbers of sensor for a short time, i.e. you’d have a high volume production line spend most of its time in setup for different runs instead of doing something useful. And that for a low margin product.

          6. I good strategy for the short term… but only worrying about the sensor will prove to be a problem longterm… At some point the sensors will no longer need to be improved for the majority of users at that point the sensor producer will be left to simply build sensors for replacement cameras and the few new folks entering the MF arena. Not sure the market for MF is ever going to be that great though… to much of A niche

      3. This is bullshit, your saying they don´t want to take some market share from the market leader canon, which does not use sony sensors, loose loose situation, hence bull.

        1. I did not say that. I said they do not not want to dominate the industry..thats a big difference.
I was also told that canon does use some sony sensors but I did not follow that up with a question so I dont know more on that subject.
If you think its bμll$hit at least get the bμll$hit right.

          1. I have seen a post today that cannon are pulling out of compacts.

Thanks for your post its very interesting .

  20. Admin , When will there be reliable info about the spec’s of the A79, for once we dont need rumors no more, but rather facts, it’s more then time to reveal the known facts, thanks.

  21. A few readers on this post are telling us that I am a liar and I am crazy and I am immagining things and seem to need to say this over and over and over again.
We have heard your opinion and in case you are not clever enough to figure it out I am not responding to you.
Now can we get back to talking about A mount cameras or do you have another list of insults you think I need to hear?

    1. I just wanted to make one thing clear – i was not criticizing you with my original comments. I was just very surprised that a high level manager / executive would phone somebody, from the general public, to reveal what “seemed” to be company secrets. No manager / executive would do that – if they wanted to keep their jobs.

Yes there have been leaks from Sony about other cameras e.g. A7, A7r etc. However (based on things I have read) Sony is very aware of that & wants it to stop or they want to “muddy the waters” with information that sounds true but actually isn’t (do I need to mention Apple & iPhone here?) No manufacturer really wants their rivals to know what they are actually about to release.

So over the day more info has been coming out & it is now clearer what you discussed with that person. Yes some of the information has already been released (so possible confirmation of the rumors of what we already know). However you have to agree that until the official announcement is made – ALL information “leaked” is just a rumor. Hence this site.

      1. For some reason a few individuals object catagorically to anything and everything I say and follow my comments from post to post making reapeated and pointless insults to me.
The fact that I am outspoken offends some people especially if my opinions differ from thiers.
You are most definitely not one of those individuals and my comment was not directed at you.

In a short time some of what I have stared will prove to be true or false..and I have presented so much stuff I am sure some details may prove to be inacurate.

If I am proven correct then I do not expect appologies or retractions from them..in fact the less they have to say to me the better.

I do not want to discourage opinions from anyone including these individusls.

I do however mot approve of personal attacks and stalker like behavior.
This behavior is often direted not only at me but at other individuals and is quite distastefull.

I aapologize that you thought I was reffering to you
Singling out these individuals will possibly encourage then so that is why I have not done so.
        They know who the are.

        1. @Barry

SAR readership is constantly harassed by these same TROLLS.

They’re the same clowns who attack any information supporting platforms that are neither Nikon, Canon, or NEX.

Ignore them and they’ll go away eventually.

        2. I did not think you were referring to me personally – I just wanted to make clear that I was not criticizing you. I have been amazed at some of the responses – that is why I don’t generally join in conversations like these.

        3. Barry thank you for sharing and I understand you have to protect your source, the next 18 months are going to be very interesting

    2. @Barry thanks for the good work.

You dropped some really great information, that most of the A-Mount users enjoyed reading.

  22. Interesting: so A79 is like A99 but better and cheaper than A7? Fine, then I definitely will not buy Canon 70D or Nikon D5300 ! But only then !!!!

    1. I am also considering the same thing lol
Just hope SONY to announce it as soon as possible!
I am in need in months yet I wanna stick to SONY…

      1. yep, A77 was quite a good gear, but for sports and wildlife its AF performance together with EVF and high ISO was just not good enough. If Sony can make a gear with the best of D610 (6D) and D5300 (70D) they will not loose an old Minolta/Sony customer like me … but only then !!!

          1. Because your post is both dismissive, and semi-rude. It provides no real substance, and you didn’t even substantiate you opinion. A blog is an online debate, and experienced users actually provide explanations for their opinions.

          2. So your post DID provide substance, right? Where did you substantiate your opinion and provide an explanation? All I see is an outlandish claim about the A79 – an APS-C camera that hasn’t yet been announced – being able to score “well above” the FF A99 in DxOMark. Come on, practice what you preach!

Until then, you are in absolutely no position to judge others as rude or accuse them of being trolls. You are the absolute worst there is here in that regard.

  23. This has been a laugh. I spend good quality time spinning A-mount is dead, dead, dead and no one is stalking me or bashing my reputation or character. Barry posts several times what he believed to be reliable ‘good’ A-mount news and is tormented by is own “community,” whatever that means. I mean, where is the love.
Also, what happened to my Apple logo, and why is this comment section all messed up? I leave for a bit and this is what happens, jeese!
    Dan

    1. The old common system is dead, dead, dead. Evolve or die with it! You have to add your avatar to disqus if you want a thumbnail next to your name.

      1. I’d love a quality stalker, but all I have is a BRAT, and sadly we see eye-to-eye on most things. I like e-mount and a-mount and everything Sony puts out for the most part (minus that stupid phone/camera thing). It’s only my opinion that A-mount is dead, dead, dead that gets people going. Honestly, I don’t want it to die, it brings in good business for me. I guess I could say I don’t like the Zeiss badging of Sony lenses, but really I could not care less, if people want to buy into the branding gimmic, great.
        Dan

        1. Sadly I do not have any direct control of my stalkers however
DEAR STALKERS …YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST..LEAVE ME AND JOIN DAN WHERE YOU ARE WANTED AND APRECIATED.
          DANS THE MAN!
          Ok I tried.

  24. So I’ll translate the data provided by @Barry to give some insight on Sony’s possible marketing strategy for its Alpha Series Cameras.

Sony will dominate the market by regaining the 13-15% of the DSLR market the A-Mount enjoyed in 2001-04 (by being the most innovative), and work to become the market leader in the mirror-less camera segment with the A5000, A6000, A7, and A7r. Sony will continue to provide its partners with sensors, profiting off every Pentax, Nikon, and possibly Olympus camera sold. They’ll probably own the medium format sensor market for the foreseeable future as well.

Sony doesn’t have a chance off taking on Canon directly with DSLR Sales. Canon’s user base is deeply established, and their professional clients have been indoctrinated already. However their Rebel user-base is far from loyal (average consumers), and will likely shed their Canon Rebels for whatever platform provides the most gimicks at the lowest price. The Alpha A5000, A6000 are set to gain the most from this.

    No mirrors no problems.

The Z-Shift will allow the A-Mounts (44.50mm flange distance) use the E-Mount lenses (18mm flange distance) with a flick of a button. So both A and E mount lenses will be cross-compatible with each other (Z-Shift/LA-EA adapters).

If you add up the tally you’ll clearly see Sony’s combined A-Mount, E-Mount, and DSLR sensor sales solution is the only winning strategy.

    1. The DSLR market for Sony is now sub 5% they will never treble their current market share to get to 13-15% .As for profiting from every sale to Nikon, considering that most estimates put the FF share of the DSLR market at 8-9% this means that Nikon source sensors for 90%+ of their DSLRs elsewhere { Nikon design and Toshiba manufacture } . The sensor in the D5300/D7100 managed to be a little better than even Sony’s best. A-mount will never recover the numbers to make it a big winner profit wise E-mount and sensor sales must be their future

      1. Sony will easily attain the 13-15% goal as the low end (Canon Rebels) switch to A5000, and A6000 cameras, and Canon professionals begin to switch to A7, and A7r cameras. This is currently occurring.

As the DSLR market shrinks, which is happening today (specifically Canon, Nikon). The A-Mount user base is increasing not though sales but through the attrition of Sony’s traditional competition (Canon, and Nikon).

Sony has eliminated two failing Divisions in order to focus on its profitable mobile, gaming, and imaging divisions. The A-Mount (Sony’s flagship) is reaping the benefits of this shift in resources.

A genuine increase in A-Mount sales, and market share will be created by Sony with the release of cameras that feature advanced technology that their competition cannot possible match (4K, 32mp APS-C, 54mp FF, Z-Shift, on sensor AF, 5 Point Stabilization). Sony goal is to provide the most innovative, DSLRs.

I expect the A79 to disrupt the current APS-C DSLR market when it launches, because it will be the only modern, and innovative APS-C DSLR available.

Sony’s 2014 market share gain will be both rapid, and dramatic.

  25. Barry,

Love your work on this. Always love your contributions – no matter how controversial they are to some. Don’t know if everything you been told will come true, but I am sure that Sony will continue to bring amazing products to market. It will be fun to see how the future unfolds and I think that you will get that mega high res sensor pretty dam soon!.

    To everyone else:

Lighten up, Sony has just started to revolutionise photography. In ten years time you will wonder what people were thinking in the 2010’s trying to make digital cameras look like 1970’s style SLR’s and 1920’s style rangefinders. Future tech will trounce everything that has come before and Sony is the one company that is pushing hardest. So hang on and stop whinging cause this ride is just starting to pickup speed.

    Spike

  26. Hay guys …….What date are we looking at for the Z Shift and what are the possibilities of it being inside the new A78 ?????

Also Is it possible to have say a duel Bonze X giving it the computing power to Run the Z shift and A mount lenses SSM at the same time making it the indisputable focusing chamion .to keep a insinuative their to buy the Alpha glass obviously the cannon stuff carried over will focus but not as blisteringly fast

If thy did this added on 12fps continious Do you think it would be a Hit ?

  27. My personal prefferrences are of course for even higher resolutions.
As for z shift in the hybrid and IBIS
Shaping the camera like a video camera would allow lots of room for movement in the z direction.
Extension of 60-100mm would be highly usefull for macro especially in long lenses.
Z shift focus would be usefull for non auto focus lenses and to increase the focal length for close focus on internal focus lenses.
Just my prefferences…this post would not be complete without them.
    P.S.
I have also included several typing errors because this post would not be complete without them too.

  28. Admin
Thanks for sharing this stuff with everyone..you run a great site.
The new editing feature is much overdue and greatly appreciated.

    1. There are 3 factors to high ISO performane.
      Actual ISO
New slt mirror allows 10% more light to reach the sensor.
Gapless microlens concentrates more light on each pixel..not sure which sensors will use this..best quess 36mp ff and 32mp c sensors.
These new technologies will improve actual iso by allowing more light to reach the sensor.
      Usable ISO
New processing technology including selective noise reduction.
Conventional noise reduction is global and degrades the quality of the image in the highlights.
New selective noise reduction technology performs more noise reduction on the shadows where it is most needed and less in the highlights where it is not needed.
The result is that even though the actual high iso available may not change…more of the available iso range is of suuficient quality to be considered usable.
The improvement here is much more significant than the improvement to actual iso.
      Finally there are other features
Improved image ststabilization and faster focus result in better image capture and simulate higher iso.
Sony is making ballenced improvements across the board so YES the new cameras will all have higher iso than thier predecessors.
