The Sony RX10V will be announced this week on July 9. And I have some additional info I got from a source:

The rumors about it having the same lens and sensor are correct. It has all the new AF features (eye tracking and subject detection for people, animals, birds, cars, planes) you would expect from a new Sony release combined with a new double BIONZ ZR Sensor and an AI Chip. The videospecs are updated as well with 4K120fps and FullHD 240fps, SLog3 and User LUTs. A thing that I found quite interesting was the grip design which leans more towards the A9III and A1II with two custom buttons on the top and a more refined shape than the A7 line. The Burst mode got an update as well.

Sony RX10V specs:

  • 20MP 1 inch sensor
  • 24-600mm F2.8-4.0 Zeiss Lens
  • NEW double Bionz ZR processor
  • NEW AI chip
  • NEW AF features (eye tracking and subject detection)
  • 4k120fps, HD 240fps, SLog3
  • LUT support
  • new grip similar to A9III and A1II

Viltrox is teasing the launch of a new EVO lens.

A trusted source (Thanks again!!!) already told us we will get the Viltrox 26mm f/2.8 EVO pancake lens for Sony E and Nikon Z. Release this month with a price tag of $299.

We already saw an image and a video of this lens:

As noted by our reader Alan Marcus (Thanks!) the Sony teaser shows the upcoming new RX10V has a 9.1-210mm which is slightly different than the 8.8-220mm lens of the nine year old Sony RX10IV. Assuming both cameras use the same 1 inch sensor size this means:

  • New RX1V has a 25-575mm Full Frame equivalent lens
  • RX10IV had a 24-600mm Full Frame equivalent lens

This would mean Sony did some small changes and we loose a bit of reach and 1mm at the wide end.

I have been told the Sony FX5 uses a new 3.5 inch large fully articulating screen. This sits right in between the 3 inch Sony FX3 LCD and the 4 inch Nikon ZR LCD. Another source wrote this:

The touchscreen is a 16:9 similar to the one in the Burano. Fun fact: when you use the camera in 16:9 mode you have more screen estate, around 1cm in each direction compared to fx3. But in open gate you have less, the image is smaller than before because the height of the screen is less.

Sony FX5 specs:

  • 16MP Fully stacked sensor
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Triple Base ISO
  • False Color
  • Venice menu style
  • X-OCN LT internal RAW recording
  • new external removable tilting EVF available
  • 3.5 inch fully articulating screen
  • announcement second half of July
  • One more thing: RX10V camera is coming on July 9

Sony FX5 preorder links will open very soon here at BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama, Fotokoch, FotoErhardt, Calumet, Clifton, WexUK 😉

Mystery solved! The “thing” attached to the hot shoe in this image is a removable EVF! I don’t know the EVF’s resolution yet, but I have been told it can be detached. I really like the idea of being able to choose whether you want to use an EVF or not. The only downside is that, when the EVF is attached, the Sony Multi Interface Shoe can’t be used for external audio accessories.

Sony FX5 specs:

  • 16MP Fully stacked sensor
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Triple Base ISO
  • False Color
  • Venice menu style
  • X-OCN LT internal RAW recording
  • new external removable tilting EVF available
  • announcement second half of July
  • One more thing: RX10V camera is coming on July 9

What you see here is likely the first leaked image of the Sony FX5 and it tells us a LOT about this new cine camera! First of all thanks to the source for sending this image and the additional info I will post here. I truly appreciate your help 😉

Sony FX5 image leak: Let’s start from the top and go down to analyze what we see here:

  • On top something BIG is attached…I don’t know if it’s a MIC or something else. What’s your guess?
  • The menu array is very different from the Sony FX3. And we se it has a False Color button!
  • The camera seems to have a massive LCD screen, maybe similar in size to this Nikon ZR?
  • The menu is the one from the Venice lineup and not from the classic Alpha lineup!
  • The menu shows it records 5k 3:2 and other modes.

I hope the source will also soon show us the other options on the menu like codec, video format and so forth 😉

Sony FX5 specs:

First, an important correction: the camera does not have a 16MP global shutter sensor. Instead, it uses a 16MP fully stacked sensor. I apologize for the mistake. The first source, who correctly shared the camera name and release timing, misunderstood the sensor technology. So now the expected specs are the following:

  • 16MP Fully stacked sensor (a newly developed Sony sensor!)
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Triple Base ISO
  • X-OCN LT internal RAW recording
  • announcement second half of July
  • One more thing: RX10V camera is coming on July 9

Personal note: After 48 hours of a pretty horrific journey, I finally arrived late tonight in the Pyrenees. Over the next few days I’ll be able to catch up on all the rumors I received over the past 2–3 days, so expect a lot of new posts. Thanks again to all the sources who continue to support my work!

I’ve received conflicting rumors about the new FX5 sensor. Most of my sources say it has a native 16MP sensor, but one source claims it actually uses a higher-resolution sensor that is downsampled to 16MP. I can’t confirm whether that’s accurate. Either way, I think we’re likely looking at a resolution of around 16MP (maybe 16. something)

The real big question is whether this is a brand-new global shutter sensor or a fully stacked sensor. From what I’ve heard most recently, the original global shutter rumor may have been based on a misunderstanding from a source. 🙁

Rumored Sony FX5 specs summary:

  • 16MP sensor. Unclear if its global shutter or stacked sensor
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Triple Base ISO
  •  X-OCN internal RAW
  • announcement second half of July
  • One more thing: RX10V camera is coming on July 9

On July 9 Sony will announce the new Sony RX10V. it’s a very minimal update with new chip (for faster processing and better AF) and Sony NP-FZ100 battery support. From what I understood it will keep the same sensor and 24-600mm lens of the original 9 year old RX10IV.

The Sony FX5 will be announced after mid July!

Image shows the current Sony RX10IV

Thanks to trusted sources I can now confirm two cameras will be announced in two separate announcements in July:

In early July we will get the Sony RX10V

  • Compact fixed lens super zoom camera

Later in July we will get the new Sony FX5:

  • New Global Shutter sensor (different from the one used in this Sony Alpha camera).
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Slightly bigger than current Sony FX3
  • Has some brand new features
  • Announcement in July

One new sources also mentioned something about a new lens. But I am not sure about that and I don’t know if this is the 16-28mm f/2.0 GM.

Open Gate as advertised on the Lumix S9

For years, we kept asking Sony why they wouldn’t add Open Gate recording to their compact Cinema Line cameras. On multiple occasions, Sony managers said they didn’t believe it was a feature users really needed. But it looks like they’ve finally changed their mind: the upcoming Sony FX5 is expected to feature full Open Gate support.

Specifically I have been told the camera has Opengate 5K 3:2 support!

Sony FX5 specs summary:

  • New Global Shutter sensor (different from the one used in this Sony Alpha camera).
  • Open Gate 5k 3:2
  • Slightly bigger than current Sony FX3
  • Has some brand new features
  • Announcement in July

Unconfirmed: We might get a Sony RX10V too!

I am working on the full specs of the FX5…it’s going to be a clear step up over the FX3! What do you think about this news?
