Thanks Joe 😉

All sources confirmed the Sony FX5 has built-in IBIS. A new source added a curios note I don’t know if it’s true: He said that on request the IBIS can be removed from the FX5 by Sony.

IBIS works by floating the sensor on electromagnets. Even when it’s locked, it’s not as mechanically rigid as a sensor that is bolted directly to the camera chassis. Having the IBIS removed means the sensor isn’t wobbling around, more ideal for gimbal use, more reliable, more accurate.

What do you think about that “feature”?

The Sony FX5 with the external tiltable EVF

A trusted source told me to not worry too much about the pricing. The camera is going to cost a bit less than this Sony FX model (links to price in your country). So while more expensive than the FX3 this new FX5 is WAY more capable and none of the testers I talked to thought the price would be “too high” for what the camera delivers!

On July 15 Tamron will announce this new 12-20mm f/2.8 Full Frame autofocus lens! It’s a very unique kind of lens and also very compact, smaller+lighter and half the price of the Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 GM (check price link). I do like it and you?

Here is the full leaked press text:

TAMRON 12-20mm F2.8 for SONY E & NIKON Z (Model A084)

Pro Performance Minus the Weight. Ultra-Wide Built For the Field.

The defining feature of the 12-20mm F2.8 (Model A084) is its ultra-wide focal range, from 12mm to 20mm. The overwhelming breadth of the 12mm perspective enables dynamic expression that seems to “capture the entire expanse of a scene.” With a bright F2.8 aperture maintained throughout the entire zoom range, this lens is poised to become the “new protagonist” for astrophotography and interior shooting.
SonyAlphaRumors.com
The optical system incorporates an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) lens element, three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements, and multiple special lens elements. This design effectively suppresses peripheral blurring and color fringing while correcting sagittal coma flare — a common challenge in astrophotography — ensuring high sharpness from the center to the extreme edges of the frame.
SonyAlphaRumors.com
Despite its exceptional imaging performance, the lens achieves a sophisticated balance of size and weight, measuring just 4.7” (119.3mm) in length and weighing only 20.2oz. (570g).¹ While compact, it remains a professional-grade tool equipped with various switches and rings for superior operability.
For autofocus, the lens features the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), a high-speed, high-precision linear motor focus mechanism. Furthermore, with an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of 7.1” (0.18m) at the 12mm wide end, the lens offers outstanding close-up performance for creative versatility.

¹ Length and weight are for Sony E-mount.

Features:
—Beyond the scope of vision — the overwhelming perspective only 12mm can capture
—Stunning corner-to-corner resolution for astrophotography and nightscapes
—Enhanced mobility for landscapes — a compact and lightweight design
—Comprehensive control features to meet professional demands
—High-speed, high-precision, and quiet performance with VXD linear motor focus mechanism

Two different sources (Thanks!) sent me three images of the new Sony FX5. Here they are:

Here are the major things I noticed from these leaked images:

  1. The shape is really nearly the same of the Sony FX3, But the FX5 is a bit thicker.
  2. We finally see that external tiltable EVF
  3. The 3.5 inch fully articulating screen is eating up the real estate on the back of the camera. There is no more control wheel and only three buttons are left.

There are other minor changes here and there (like the addition of a False color button) but in short this is a more advanced version of the FX3, with Venice menu, internal RAW, Open gate.

More new FX5 info: The sources also told me there are some new internal RAW formats made for this camera, the camera has dual SD/CF Type A support (with two slots) and when it comes to IBIS there is something interesting I will report soon on SAR 😉

First  impressions from FX5 testers: All the testers I spoke with told me they really like the camera. They described it as a much more mature product than the FX3. Yes, it costs more (though not that much more), but it addresses many of the FX3’s shortcomings. Of course, these are personal opinions, but one interesting thing I can report is that every single source I spoke to had a positive impression of the camera.

Share your opinion: With the images and specs you have seen so far…do you think this is the camera you were waiting for?
