Mirrorless shipment analysis. More Mirrorless and less DSLR shipped compared to last year!

If you look at the stats posted by Cipa you will see that compared to February 2013 this year Japanese companies shipped 33,7% more mirrorless cameras and 12,3% less DSLR cameras! After many months of negative trend the mirrorless shares are increasing again.

The data include DSLR and mirrorless camera shipped by Japanese companies. So these do not include Leica and Samsung for example. Doesn’t make a lot of difference as the big producers are all Japanese anyway.

Personal View analyzed the data in detail and you see how mirrorless sales are incredibly problematic on US market. Americans still love DSLR many times more than Mirrorless cameras 🙁

  1. It makes much more sense than the earlier news, about an equal decline.

The problem is that the main sites commenting are in the majority led by Americans, and so reality gets distorted, but in the end it’s the practical side of mirrorless that must prevail.

  2. very nice to see – eventually the giant Canon will wake up when Fuji and Sony start eating into their profit more –
currently Canon and Nikon control the US market – the store shelfs –
So as long as M43 Panasonic and Olympus stay profitable I will be happy – Fuji and Sony are doing well so not worry there and Samsung has lots of money

  3. Just terrible numbers.

Who cares what style of interchangeable lens cameras consumers buy when the entire industry is circling the drain? Ha ha, our team’s winning the shuffleboard match, even though the Titanic is going down.

In just the last two years the entire segment seems to be circling the drain:
From Feb 2012 to Feb 2013 sales of all interchangeable lens cameras plummeted by 47%! In one year!
From Feb 2013 to Feb 2014 sales of all interchangeable lens cameras plummeted by 61%! In one year!

That means last month they shipped only 28% of the product they were shipping two years earlier.

What other longstanding consumer product industry is collapsing like this?

And they all want to make it up by selling high-end high-margin products.

Please, somebody tell me I’m interpreting this wrong.

And, Ingolfur, although you think this is nice to see, neither Panasonic nor Olympus are profitable or have been profitable in mickey four-three.

  4. It’s a pretty poor performance really, for mirrorless.

In the last part of 2013 and into 2014 there was a bunch of really big morrorless launches – Oly OMD-EM1, Sony A7/A7r, and Fuji XE-2 & XT-1 and a bunch of other new iterative models. On the DSLR side we’ve had very little of interest, beyond the Nikon Df. This will have (relatively) supported mirrorless shipments compared to DSLRs.
