Canon didn’t capture our hearts withe their Canon EOS-M mirrorless camera. And the rumored Canon EOS-M with built.in viewfinder was juts…a rumor 🙂 But Canonrumors reports new rumors (true???) that “Canon plans to “relaunch” the system in the coming months with 2 new cameras“.
The first camera will replace the actual EOS-M model and the second camera will be a completely new high end model. The autofocus will be dramatically improved and at least three lenses will be announced within the year.
Let’s see if Canon will really become “serious” with their next Mirrorless models! Canon can’t afford to miss the train now!

More like what Canon will do is copy everyone else’s stuff, slap a Canon logo on it and it will sell because it’s Canon.
The 22/2 lens is very good. Add a nice body behind it and you have a nice compact 35mm eq. camera 😉 So please Canon, just do it!
Maybe this, maybe that… only one thing is certain – it is going to be the same “new” 4-y/o 18-mpix sensor.
18 megapixel sensor? This changes everything. It’s magical.
Poor Canonrumors, always has to post CR1 “real rumors”.
I doubt they will come with anything interesting. If they were smart, they would introduce something designed like the x-series cameras, but they won’t. They will likely keep it ugly and uninspiring like the EOS-M, which shows their lack of effort and interest. The problem is that they have done well for so long, so they continue to pump out uninspiring crap – everything below the 5d mkiii has been introduced with the bare minimum and lack of innovation.
If they continue to ignore customer demand, they will eventually fall. DSLRs will be unnecessary in a few years, except for professional sports and wildlife photographers.
If they were smart they would introduce a high-end APS-H or full frame sensor mirrorless camera, which many people are calling for from other companies. If they just come with APS-C, there are far better options out there. For the time being I will keep my Canon DSLR for macro photography, as I love the 100mm f2.8L lens, but I am definitely buying into a new system, as I am tired of their give the bare minimum approach and uninspiring cameras.
Can it be better than samsung nx300 or sony nex6? I really doubt that.
I am WAITING EAGERLY for Canon to release these newer models. I’m ready to buy. Hopefully the “higher end” model is not bigger (at least by much) AND has an *integrated* viewfinder. Hurry up Canon!!! 🙂
That sounds pretty interesting as Canon can’t make another marketing mistake if they really want to be in the mirrorless segment …As a Canon DSLR user, i would like to invest in MFT system as backup material at first stage and then make the move and drop DSLR system. To have more choice between Pana & Oly would be a good thing if Canon wake up and deliver at last good MFT gear !!
I think Canon will continue to make mistakes.
I did this and now use my OM-D day to day, got rid of all my Canon gear and had money to spare in the end. To be honest I don’t really miss anything about my Canon and the OM-D + a few lenses can be carried with me on board planes rather than being checked in and damaged by careless airlines.
I encourage people to go to lens rentals or similar and hire an OM-D + a few primes and the panasonic 2.8 zooms, spend a whole weekend getting use to them and then go back to using your old DSLR. You’ll see what I mean 🙂
And Nikon is the “last company sleeping” …
Not sleeping really – they have had a mirrorless for quite some time. The thing is that they see mirrorless as a “toy system” and have not released anything with any allure to pro’s – don’t get me wrong they are a fun little camera with fantastic IQ given what’s inside! Just not likely to offset anyones DSLR like a NEX or MFT camera might.
Over priced is what Nikon puts out. Not as good as competitors. Case in point. Nikon CoolPix A vs Ricoh GR Digital.
But, What if Canon does come out with an amazing camera that kicks ass.Everyone would still be pissed and complain about something.
If Canon were to come out with something groundbreaking, they would be praised, not criticized. However, based on their history, it is highly unlikely that the new EOS M’s will be anything worth reading about and definitely not worth buying.
Come out with an APS-H or Full Frame mirrorless camera system with a full set of fast, high quality primes and no AA filter, and they will retain their current customers and capture far more. The market is in a transition period with no one raising to the top. The first company to design a high quality, large sensor (APS-H or larger) mirrorless camera system with AF, no AA filter, fast primes, and at a reasonable price ($2500 or lower), they will capture the market. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, I doubt Canon will be the one.
If they try to sell the “new M” with a built in EVF and a price tag of $400/- that would be good re-start.
If they want the same cash as for the “old M”, good luck!!!
It is not even about the price. Who would buy something so uninspiring and pointless! The EOS M was a great example of how far off the mark Canon is. To be honest, even with DSLRs, they are starting to lose ground below their professional cameras, as their is nothing special about them.
They definitely need to try something different, and a great starting point would be to design a fantastic, retro-styled, mirrorless system with AF, high-quality lenses, and a larger than APS-C sized sensor, with a body similar in size to the X-Pro 1 – not too small like a toy, but not too large either. APS-H may be the best option, to keep the camera and lenses reasonably small.
Unfortunately, I have been waiting nearly a year to replace my Canon DSLR with a mirrorless system, but there still is nothing great out yet. The closest is the Fuji X-Series cameras, but they are still in clean-up mode and still have not provided a replacement for the X-Pro 1, which is needed. They are the only company that seem close to developing a high-quality mirrorless system with AF and interchangeable lenses, but they have yet to do so and appear to be focused on developing lenses, which is necessary, and an entry-level system, which is pointless. They should leave the entry-level cameras for M4/3, and instead focus on developing a high-quality system.
These company’s get kicked in the balls before they even launch a camera. People list specs they’d like to see on THEIR opinion of what THEIR perfect camera is and find themselves disappointed in the end due to that lack of one or two features. I truly honestly believe that no matter what a company puts out…it will never be perfect for all. It will be perfect for some but not all. I have a Fender Guitar that I’ve played for twenty years since I was in high school. I’ve never owned another. Still searching for the perfect digital camera for myself that is the equivalent of this. I just wish the industry would stop milking our money with these small incremental changes and just put out everyone’s perfect camera…but they wont. It’s all about the cash. As soon as they get close, a new format will come out and the whole process will start over again…and again….and again…
