  1. Nice features!!!
But… Fuji, please, in order to make usable the Auto Iso setting, the camera must show tha actual Iso setting, not get stuck with “Auto800”.
User shall ALWAYS have real-time information about aperture, shutter speed, iso and exp compensation.

    1. And the other Fuji cameras without ISO dial shall not pop up an iso menu when manually changing iso, they shall just show the iso changes the same way the X-T1 shows.

    2. I too agree that having the maximum ISO set being shown until you press the shutter release is less useful than having the actual ISO showing. I really hope that’s addressed in the new firmware.

Now that we have pure auto ISO, (shutter speed and aperture set manually) available with exposure compensation I will be using that a lot, instead of aperture priority. That’s a really useful addition. Was always a limitation on my D700s as well.

The focussing improvements look great. This firmware looks a really substantial step forward.

Apart from the lack of decent dedicated flash, there are very now fewer reasons to use a DSLR.

      1. I’d like my X100 had this feature but it doesn’t allow exposure compensation under such conditions.
But what means exposure compensation with manual exposure and auto ISO?
You select aperture and speed leaving to the camera to set the ISO for the correct exposure.
        How does exposure compensation work?
It seems the only way is to change the value of the ISO, causing either a underexposure or overexposure compared to the “neutral reading”.
However I’ve here a doubt – what happens if the “neutral” is at minimum or maxim ISO values?
At least out of these extreme settings my D700 varies the ISO when using compensation and this has an effect on the actual exposure as either aperture and speed are kept as set. So to a certain extent are you sure this was a full limitation of yours?
Coming back to Fuji, does someone tested how this work with X-T1?

      1. I can make an analogy with the Aperture priority to explain what I mean:
If the camera in A mode just showed “AUTO 30s” meaning that the maximum auto exposure will be of 30s, intead of showing the real time metered shutter speed, the A mode would be unusable.
I feel the same frustration using the auto iso.

          1. How does showing the metered ISO value drain the battery any more than showing the metered aperture or shutter speed?

          2. The equation has to be solved either way. Before the shot is taken, shutter speed, aperture and ISO need to be either calculated, or dialed in by the user. The way I understood the OP, he is asking for the calculated ISO to be shown, just like the camera would display the calculated aperture and shutter speed.

          3. You really don’t see the difference between solving an equation once (upon locking the exposure) and solving it constantly at the frequency of a few KHz, then calculating a median value at the same frequency – and all of it strictly for the photographer’s entertainment?

          4. I did not read the OP’s question as him wanting the calculated ISO to be displayed constantly (although the expression “real-time” may suggest otherwise). Perhaps the OP can elaborate?

          5. What I mean is Constantly!
The same way the shutter speed is constantly shown in A mode.

          6. “all of it strictly for the photographer’s entertainment”
Why do you feel the need to be so patronising when someone makes a perfectly valid suggestion?

          7. Why do you feel the need to be so patronising

            That’s very patronising but wrong

You may need to discuss this display of insecurity projections with your therapist. As for the “perfectly valid suggestion”, somehow I’m still not convinced that my initial assessment (“strictly for the photographer’s entertainment”) is wrong.

          8. Mama Pentax does it, and does it very well, at least since Pentax K10D (year 2006).

Av mode: front dial contols aperture, real dial contols iso, speed auto. (it shall be Fuji A mode)

Tv mode: front dial controls shutter speed, rear dial controls iso, aperture auto. (it shall be Fuji S mode)

TAv Mode: front dial controls aperture, rear dial controls shutter speed, iso auto. (it shall be Fuji M mode + Auto ISO + smart engineering)

In any of these settings, you can compensate exposure.

All these are ecuations have the same computational complexity. They have just ONE unknown variable.

If you have full auto or A+AUTO iso , or S + Auto iso, THEN you will have to add more ecuations in the sistem to solve it and you’ll have a little more battery drain.

          9. “You mean, how does solving an equation with 2 variables happens to be a much less power intensive task than solving the one with 3+ variables?”

The issue also occurs in Auto ISO when the other two variables are set manually, in manual mode.

      2. That’s very patronising but wrong. I do this for a living and can tell you that I can have metered readings of all three parameters displayed constantly. When in Aperture Priority I have the actual shutter speed displayed constantly. I do not need to wait to press the shutter release to get a reading. Metering is constant.

This would also be desirable to many who wish to have that information available in auto ISO modes. Not really sure why Auto ISO modes should be any different.

        1. My X-T1 (with firmware 3.00) doesn’t show the shutter speed in Av (aperture priority) mode, unless I half-press the shutter. Only when I place it in TAv (shutter & aperture priority) mode does it display both aperture and shutter speed. What setting have I missed?

          1. In AV with manually selected ISO, all three parameters are (or can be) shown full time.

    3. I understand what you want done, but honestly cannot see the point. What I mean is that if you put any part of the triangle (aperture, exposure time & ISO) in “auto” mode, then it means that you don’t really care about it. For example, let’s say you set aperture to f/5.6 and exposure time to 1/250th of a second and now the camera automatically calculates an ISO setting of 400, what are you going to do? Start fiddling with the ISO dial? But then you will also need to change either or both the manual settings for aperture and/or exposure time, because otherwise the points of your triangle won’t connect. No, you specifically want that aperture and that exposure time and consequently don’t really care what the ISO is.

If “high-ISO” noise is what you want to avoid, then lower the MAX. SENSITIVITY setting.

Actually, having just checked this on my X-T1, I prefer the “Auto[ISO]” label, because it informs me what the maximum ISO rating is to which the camera will push itself.

      1. There will be times when I have plenty of flexibility to lower the ISO when there is scope for opening the aperture another stop for example. If I see that I would rather open up a stop and lower the ISO then I will do so.

Personally I would prefer to have the actual ISO on display, just as I have the metered shutter speed on display permanently when in Aperture Priority mode.

        1. There will be times when I have plenty of flexibility to lower the ISO when there is scope for opening the aperture another stop for example. If I see that I would rather open up a stop and lower the ISO then I will do so.

You can do just that even with the “old” 3.xx firmware. Meter and lock the exposure by half pressing the release button (or AE-L, or whatever button you’ve designated for that), then scroll away. Everything works, including ISO dial, aperture ring, shutter speed dial and exposure compensation.

          1. Yes, I’m fully aware of that. Just saying that I would personally prefer to have all three parameters shown full time, just as they are in other auto modes. Not sure why that’s such a big deal.

There are times for some of us when the exposure is constantly varying, so locking the exposure is not something desirable.

After all, contrary to what you say, the metering itself is working constantly. Otherwise how do you think the view in the viewfinder shows a correctly exposed (or otherwise) view?

        2. I understand this, but still don’t see the point of your request. I mean, if the photographic situation is “relaxed” enough for you (the photographer) to actually fiddle with the points of the triangle, then why are you using “auto” modes? In these situations going fully manual regarding each point would be better and the X-T1 already shows you all the relevant information, including an “EXP. COMP.” scale (if you enable it).

However, at the other end and this is my reasoning, if the photographic situation is constantly in flux, then placing one of the points of the triangle in “auto” mode works best, as you can then ignore it and rather use the exposure compensation dial to tweak the histogram.

          1. In my work I have to operate quickly, it’s the nature of my job, and currently use Aperture Priority whilst manually adjusting ISO. However the fact that the new firmware, as I said above, will now allow exposure compensation in Auto ISO, means that I will be able to work in manual mode for shutter speed/aperture and use Auto for ISO.

I wouldn’t dream of working in full Auto for everything. For me the whole point of this is to be able to dictate shutter speed as well as aperture and yet still have auto exposure.

  2. I agree that having the maximum ISO set being shown until you press the shutter release is less useful than having the actual ISO showing.

Now that we have pure auto ISO, (shutter speed and aperture set manually) available with exposure compensation I will be using that a lot, instead of aperture priority. That’s a really useful addition. Was always a limitation on my D700s as well.

  3. I liked how Billy reassured those that have installed the leaked 4.0 they can install the official release and gave a mild rebuke at the same time. Good customer service approach – not heavy handed but at the same time not condoning the leak.

  4. Still couldn’t care less about the firmware update… You all really want to use zone AF or continuous AF that badly? Seems like single point or manual AF are really the only way to go for true accuracy (I’m not talking about people who want to shoot pics of their kids or dog running around…) Video is already riddled with problems and nobody shoots AF for video anyways.

    GIVE US A NEW SENSOR.

    1. Yes continuous AF is extremely useful for many purposes. People often move and in low light the XT1 does struggle, so many of us are definitely looking forward to this update.

        1. Better than it used to be… I think Fuji kinda targeted at slow photographers shooting landscapes or architecture and those who do portrait. So if you really need an all-rounder now, the best thing to do is to grab a new body from another brand.

  5. We need more rumors about the 30/35mm f/1.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This lens would convince me that fujifilm is the leica of DX.
Already loving my XT1,14mm and 23mm
