“We Are Impressed! Amazing Results”: Fuji X-T1 4.0 Vs. Fuji X-T1 1.0 – TheCameraStoreTV ** VIDEO **

Firmware 4.0 is coming tomorrow (finally!), so stay tuned on FR and feel free to share your initial thoughts here on FujiRumors and on the Fuji X Forum. You can find fellow X-shooters’ feedback testing the Beta FW in this thread.

For my own humble tracking test (following my dog), check out this article.

Now, Chris from TheCameraStoreTV tested the new X-T1 FW 4.0 and compared it to the old FW 1.0.

“The results are pretty amazing, we are impressed. Looking at the original version X-T1 we actually had a very low hit rate to get sharp photos [admin: in tracking mode]. But the modern Firmware 4.0… every shot was bang on, we had very few missed. We noted that it hesitated less, predicted better, follows subjects especially when they are coming right at the camera, very very impressive“

After the inital test of the new Firmware, you can listen to a very interesting “Firmware Talk” between Chris and Jordan. See it here.

  1. Awesome. All I’m looking for now is an increase in DR and high ISO. 16-20mpx is enough. Fuji has the lenses and now a camera body that can keep up with the action. Well done Fuji.

  2. My thumbs up to Fuji, and then FujiGuys and TCS with full coverage every time. It’s all so personal. Like we’re all in this together. Can’t get this nowhere else ..

    1. Can you install the XT1 firmware 4.0 or x100T firmware into an x100s? I’m not brave enough to try in case I brick my camera, but I wonder?

      1. Can I put the spark plugs of my Toyota into my Volkswagen !? No, You can’t and you shouldn’t … The firmware is very specific piece of software for each camera model. (note: the camera would not even take the “wrong” file and start the upgrade procedure). Simply get the right file for your camera.

        1. Technically, you can frankenstein any car into whatever you want it to be – if you have a budget and a team of skilled mechanics, of course. Same here: some bored oil prince adapting the X-T1 innards to run inside of an X100* body doesn’t seem like a huge stretch of imagination (they do much weirder things for kicks). Such a frankencamera would ultimately lose an HVF, of course.

    2. Have there been any rumors about whether the firmware for the X100s/t will be updated with these AF improvements?

  3. Very naughtily i took Billy’s admonishment as the ok to try the beta firmware. Yesterday was my twin girls 9th birthday and we took them and 6 friends to an adventure activities centre (called Manley Mere) here in Cheshire England. Obstacles, climbing nets, Zip lines, rope bridges, slides, mud pools, following by Kayaking and paddle boarding. I took my X-t1 and the 18-135. I had been praying v4.0 would come out on the 25th so was disappointed it was going to be the 29th. I knew that I would have a lot of misses. I had shot their school sports day a few days earlier and while i got some nice shots – the races in particular weren’t great.

OMG – i took 579 images and less than 20 are misses i.e. clear out of focus. Ok some of the shots aren’t up for awards but they are in focus and well exposed – for years being a Raw shooter I’ve gone back to Jpeg.

I don’t think you can put the camera to a better test than 8 hyperactive 9 year olds jumping in and out of mud pools and v4.0 nailed it. i finally feel like my belief in Fuji has been rewarded. I’ve had an x100 x100s Xe2 and now the Xt1. I shot a little bit of video of them – I’ve got out of the habit of doing that – but even that is much better than previously – ok it was a sunny day I shot at f5.6 but theres no hunting its all much smoother.

For the future…i agree i don’t need more megapixels – though I’m still not convinced the x-trans sensor is better than the non x-trans i have some amazing iQ shots from my X100 – Even better low light would be good – i certainly want a decent radio flash system (i really miss that from my canon days). the extension of PDAF points to all points would make clear sense for the next camera – as thats hardware only – also a bigger buffer – in high speed mode – i was hitting the buffer when shooting the girls running along paddle boards. Better battery life as well would be nice – i know i can get the vertical grip but i like the small size – bigger capacity batteries?

  4. Can’t wait for the firmware! Hopefully my X-T1 will be a brilliant all-round camera. I hope Nikon watched the TCS video as well. My Nikon D610 could sure do with a couple of small firmware improvements (better AF tracking speed and 100% magnification function button) but I guess Nikon would never do this as it would eat into D750 / D4s sales. Shame!

  5. XT1 already has a nice high ISO image, 8fps continuous shooting, and now group focusing. May even make for a nice wildlife/birding camera. My wish list is a 40 frame RAW buffer, and a smaller, lighter weight 600mm lens. If I can get just as good images without the weight and bulk, I’ll sell my Nikons.

    1. I think the buffer is a hardware constraint. I suspect many cameras costing 2x as much as an xt1 don’t have a 40 frame buffer tbh.

  6. Great to see some local (Calgary) content here, I’ve been a customer at The Camera Store and they are amongst the best in retail. Actual helpful people…. such a rare find these days..

    1. From this video we learn that Fujifilm set the path with their Keizen policy but now other manufacturers are doing the same and its likely that others will follow.
I don’t think they “lock out for marketing purposes” and the problem is the opposite already – they don’t “open” more than they need to get a market advantage and keep a portfolio of projects for future implementation to react to competition moves.
Just look at Magic Lantern and the batch of video features they were able to unlock in some Canon bodies.
Nowadays hardware puts some physical limitations but most specifications tend to be software based to work the collected and/or registered data (a lot of hardware is common to several brands that offer features differentiated features due to this) and manufacturers are using firmware updates as a weapon in the competitiveness war.

        1. That’s a good one besides not everybody is likely to complain about the missing porn 🙂 🙂 but it seems that manufacturers are using this as a way to “prove” they “listen” to customers and are concerned about their “needs”.
The danger is that if this becomes the norm we risk to see new products coming to the market with the “need for improvements” discounted instead of all the features offered and fully tested at launching time.

    2. But I’ve done that – coded some feature or function but can’t finish it by production time. I’ve been known to comment it out so it’s not really there. So it’s possible some of those ‘features’ were there, but half-baked and disabled before shipping.

    1. Look at the right panel here, it shows the countdown in real time. Right now it says 10 hours 43 minutes (you may need to flush your browser’s cache to see the actual values).

  7. The last time I saw him pulling out GH4 to do a comparison in AF speed, he was including A6000, EM1 and D4s.

  8. Chris, you are a liar. I bought a Fuji xt1 from the camera store and I never got a firmware update notification from you. Not that I needed one since I come here everyday.

  9. it is a little ironic he talks about peace of mind from continued firmware upgrades while holding an x100 series camera. 100s users left in the dust 🙁

  10. The thing that gets me about the XT1 upgrade is that it now enables all shutter speeds to be selected by the front dial, even the enhanced electronic shutter speeds. Why can’t the shutter speed be set by the shutter dial? why do you need two dials that do the same thing. This seems to defeat the retro dial design, which I happen to like. Could they not change the shutter dial enable incremental speeds and high speeds to be selected?
