It is official that Fujifilm reads with great interest FujiRumors and even presents our opinion to the press.
Therefore I decided to launch a dedicated thread at the Fuji X Forum, where you can create you own poll… the most voted ones will be featured on FujiRumors… and Fujifilm will take note of them. So feel free create your own poll (with a question & the answer options).
Now, the amazing X-T1 FW 4.0 is coming (release June 29 around 5 AM London Time – midnight in NY). But what about older cameras? Earlier this months, I’ve asked over at the Fuji X Forum:
“Imagine Fuji would, for a last time, release a Firmware update for older X-series cameras (X-PRO1, X-E1, X-E2, X20, X100S, X-M1 & Co) that will bring 2 new features. Which one would you like to get?”
I now decided to put all the “Last Kaizen” wishes into one poll. You can select two options… let’s see what’s the most wanted feature in the X-community.
[poll id=”92″]
And stay tuned next week… not only because of the New X-T1 4.0 Firmware… 😉
stay tuned,

Improved AF on the X-M1 and I’m done..
Right
I had the X-M1 and I didn’t like it very much. Bought an X-T1 instead. The X-M1 is great for the auto modes, P, A and S. But in Manual mode, it’s such a pain to operate. You end up not getting the shot because you have to dive into several menu levels. A customisable Q-menu would surely help. But I’d rather see Fuji spend their time on the X-E1 than the X-M1. The X-E1 can become a great camera with some minor upgrades. It’s cheap too (used). I didn’t care for a viewfinder at first, but even though the LCD is pretty bright, I ended up longing for a proper EVF on my X-M1. I never want a PASM dial ever again.
That said, the X-M1 lasted me my entire trip to Japan and I’m happy with how my pictures turned out, when I didn’t miss them due to time-consuming operation of dials and menus.
3eV of exposure bracketing
I would love that too
yes please! even 2eV would be good
I wonder what the people voting for classic chrome is thinking.. That is the only thing that won’t be a real improvement as you can easily achieve a classic chrome look in post.
Agreed, but I must just add that as a JPG-only photographer I use Classic Chrome nearly permanently. However, coming from a Canon environment where non-RAW is heresy, it is very enlightening to find that an in-camera processing method is so high on the want-list of FUJIFILM users.
I only voted for one, but I can see that everyone else was thinking the same thing.
Faster autofocus is such a big help, I think the rest are all so minor. They aren’t going to help you get the shot.
And again, I really want what’s not on that list. An exposure compensation dial -> ISO dial switch option.
I beg to differ, ES is a major improvement too. You just can’t use screw-on ND filters in a dynamic outdoor shoot.
Point taken. I was obviously talking about my style of shooting. Yes, I think ES is a way to get yourself out of a fix, but I’m no fan of it. I think it could be renamed “the very fast stutter shutter”. Anything moving and it’s not that useful.
It should be renamed into “very slow shutter that appears to be fast”, IMO. But there’s more to it – for example, for the very slow shutter speeds ES provides some unique artifacts; I’m still learning on how to use them artistically.
Fuji should not do Firmware for 3 years old cameras – better put those resources into new stuff!!! (I have a X-E1 and X100 and hope Fuji moves on. What they did for those cameras was awesome – but now it’s time to concentrate in X-Pro2, X-T2 and others!)
However, I hope the X-E2 (still a current model!) gets some AF and other little improvements (electronic shutter).
Strange that as owner of those two cameras you don’t want Fuji to improve their software anymore, besides it’s obvious that they only do that if they want and not because they have any obligation to do it.
There are some firmware improvements that can be developed for models still in the market and “translated” to older ones without compromising their R&D for future models, and in such cases why to refuse them?
As an owner of a Fuji X100 camera and besides I don’t claim nor demand Fuji to do it I would be most pleased if I could still get colored focus peaking and exposure compensation when in auto ISO manual mode.
I wonder why you give Fuji the advice not to do it.
I give them the advice, because I saw what they can do, when they concentrate on new stuff (the X-T1 – which I also own).
Firmware needs resources and those are better used on new products that bring in money.
If you’ve a big share of Fujifilm stocks I can understand that position but as a customer I have to assume they are able to take their own business decisions and It is not up to me to advise them to act against my own interests, specially if they want to do something that I am not demanding but that would be an improvement to material I bought from them.
This may not bring in money for them now but may concur to increase the possibility of future purchases, as it seems to be the idea behind Kaizen’s policy.
I am no shareholder, but I have an interest in Fuji existing for a long time (since I have invested some money in they products, especially glas ;))
And most of the things people ask here like: “faster AF for X-Pro1” or “the lag after taking a picture on the X-E1 is too big” are based on hardware limitations (no PDAF Pixels, slow processor etc).
I say: improve cameras for a certain time (at least until a successor is announced) and then concentrate on new things. At the moment the average life time of a camera seems to be around 2-4 years, so that’s good for me.
It’s normal that a person tries to look for the safety of his/her investments but to a certain extent your last paragraph it’s a refusal of Fuji’s Kaizen policy, and this one seems to have been an important factor to the acceptance of X system by a lot of customers.
The best way to see your investment defended is if Fuji broadens their customer base. This can only be achieved keeping their product line competitive and the existing customers happy to a point they renew equipment within the brand, and limiting firmware updates only to correct bugs doesn’t seem to be the best way to achieve it the same as customers shouldn’t expect a manufacturer to keep introducing new features behind a reasonable level and within the hardware limitations.
The ones I indicated are just software changes as focus peaking is already implemented and and exposure compensation is an existing feature, only requiring some changes to allow colors or use in a particular mode.
But, please note that the same way this is not something I feel I can demand Fuji to provide I think it is not to me to ask them not to do so.
Contrary to what you and many others might think, cameras and lenses are not investments. They are tools and as such one buys the best tool for the job, use it until it cannot do the job anymore, and then chuck it in the bin (or put it on eBay), and buy a new tool that can henceforth do the job.
As an example of my viewpoint, I have a 100% working Canon EOS 30D on the shelf. This camera is worth nothing and a firmware upgrade will never give it any value again. However, the camera did its job as tool perfectly for many years, so no complaints from me in that department.
You certainly misread my post as otherwise you would have noticed that it was umad?! that put the investment argument on the table, not me.
I only used the same word within the context of firmware updates which if you read my last paragraph I just said would be welcome besides I were not in a position to demand it from Fujifilm, and the camera in question (X100) is still a good camera well beyond it’s value in the used market where prices are also highly influenced by GAS and not just by the real usability and capabilities of the material.
I have an XE1, so I didn’t vote for ‘Improved AF’ as I’m not even sure it’s realistically possible or worth the effort on Fuji’s part. Instead I voted for EV compensation for Auto-ISO in manual, and more peaking colours – two things I think are more likely possible, and of the most practical use, at least to me.
Only improved AE Bracketing +/-3
wortking autofocus of course 😀
I want to believe that “Fujifilm reads with great interest FujiRumors” but I’m afraid it was just a quick search in Internet by a marketing guy to get some numbers for the presentation.
As an X100S user: Improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF, improved AF. Oh… and… did I mention improved AF?
Dear Fuji,
Please make my beloved X-E1 with electronic shutter and if it’s not possible to increase AF speed make spot meter and AF in one area.
These are all nice options, but the one that stands out for me is “Improved Autofocus”. After I had purchased the X100S, there was only one thing that was a real letdown to me: AF performance. It was said to be improved relative to the X100, but I was not impressed, to say the very least. I therefore applaud any effort by Fuji to improve AF performance in any X camera: top R&D priority if you ask me.
Thing what makes me wonder is why the hell did you buy the camera without trying it first in a store if this AF is so important to you. It is an expensive camera. I would hate myself for buying it and than complain on rumor websites afterwards :/
Everything is relative. AF speed is bad and sometimes unreliable relative to an otherwise stellar camera. If anything else about this camera would have been as disappointing as the AF, I would definitely not have bought it. So, for your info, I’m very happy with it, except for the AF. Nothing’s perfect. I accept that.
Ok, makes sense…
Thanks. 😉
To use the cross to change the autofocus point instantly is missing. The only point I really would like on X-Pro1 and X-E2.
Exposure bracketing up to 7 different exposures
Tethered shooting
EV compensation on Manual and Auto ISO
Q-menu for the x100
You could be right… But I hear different things from my sources, but maybe they are all wrong. They told me that they especially like our polls.
That would not surprise me, as this is the by far largest community of X-shooter. When a poll gets ovet 15,000 votes and rumors hundreds of comments within a single day, you can be sure that Fuji will look very close to FR
I would like FUJIFILM to make the system of those old cameras open source. And so give us the opportunity to tweak it, but at our own risk.
Because I still believe that it is still possible press out some more performance juice out of this code.
That would be big fun.
Just do a kickstarter fundraising campaign “tweak Fuji” and pledge for US$ 500,000 to start a company that specializes in Fuji code tweaking. I would invest in you.
I’d like Fuji to firmware-update my X100 to a toilet in solid gold! I always wanted one of those.
If that’s not possible for some reason (I see why not?!) then perhaps I should just hope/vote for something in fact proven to be possible – chrome image style and the damn auto-iso exp tuning already! 😛
Please add these options to the poll :
Enable flash in continuous drive mode
Enable Rear-Curtain Sync with any flash
Expanded Exposure bracketing
Those features are sorely missed across the entire Fuji lineup, and should be relatively easy to implement.
I have an X-E1.
1. There is a multi-second lag after taking a shot, before the magnification button starts working again. This is _by far_ the most annoying thing and the single biggest complaint I have. I would be very glad if they could fix it. (I have a fast memory card so I don’t think that is the issue.)
2. EV compensation for auto-ISO in manual mode
3. Classic chrome
(The first one of course isn’t an option in the poll so I chose the second two.)
1 is also exactly my main grievance with the camera. Id iactually would like a fix for this over any other feature.
Edit: i actually confusas this with another problem. After half press, ae/AF lock IGNORES input for a brief time, leading you to think you trapped focus and actually didnt
#1 sounds like a real annoyance.
Have an XE 1 and I agree #1 is my biggest complaint along with #2 and the inability to expose for the focus point.
Its amazing how #1 is hardly ever mentioned by anyone.
The X-E2 improved AF and electronic shutter that is all Fujiland and I will be happy.
Direct access to changing the AF points is really missing in that list.
That’s all I need:
1. new improved AF
2. eletronic shutter
(3. new JPEG treatment of the X-T10)
Improved AF Xpro1 faster and classic chrome 😉
Unfortunately, 1/(focal length) minimum shutter speed will never come back. Poor zoom users !
Please request size configurable center weighted or spot metering. Average is pretty useless. Existing Spot requires careful use and can give unexpected results. CW is faster and much more usable for selective metering
Now we have a countdown on a sidebar, yay! ))
I won’t be updating my Xpro for a long, long time, and I’d love for fuji to throw us a bone on some easy (easier than some on this list) features like colored peaking and classic chrome. I’d settle for some eye candy, considering these 2 features could probably be handled by the camera easily enough. Sure, better autofocus would be awesome, but I wonder how better they can make it with the hardware we have.
To be honest, the feature I use the most since upgrading from an X-E2 to an X-T1 is the ability to move focus points without hitting the AF button. That was always the weirdest user interface choice that Fuji made. Cannot believe that was default for so long. The folks at Fujifilm must have not touched a DSLR in the last 10 years.
I’d be so happy if I could get improved focus and the electronic shutter on my X-E2… it should be possible, no?
dont stop updating older cameras please =)

Improved AF and Classic Chrome!!!!
Please, my X-E1 would love these updates!!!!
as an early adopter of fuji cameras xe1, i would very much prefer Fuji continue the firmware updates for early adopters of Fuji cameras. Reason simple being as long as they are still holding a Fuji camera, there are still earnings coming from glasses. Good pictures taken by the person will still attract others to take up the Fuji system. So, keep the early adopters in the system. There are no cons in supporting them, Fuji. Support them to keep them in the system. There are only cons when you abandon them, whereby they may go to another system. If the loyalty and trust disappears, it will be tougher to bring them back into the system.
agreed to that too
I do not need faster focusing but big AF improvement in low light. But firmware update will not improve that much focusing in low light what is the biggest drawback of Fuji cams in my view for serious work. Shoot any small action/movement in dim/low light with Fuji and you will know how many shots will go to trash. Fuji are very nice cameras but perform badly poor in low light compared to many competitors. Not supprice: Fuji’s AF sensitivity is only 0EV while Panasonic/Olympus/Nikon -4EV to -2EV. If you compare low light focusing with X-T1 vs any Panasonic you will be shocked how poorly X-T1 focuses in low light and how amazing it works in i.e. GX-7 or any Panasonic/Oly/Nikon. Look also at NR settings in Fuji – no Off set and only -2 level and even than you still have washy jpg files, while all competitors gives -/+5 NR + Off setting. All competitors bring for long time already 1/3 EV bracketing while Fuji stay in middle ages with its 1EV only. Peaking is also so so compared to Sony/Oly/Panasonic. Configurable Q-menu? Are you kidding? Look how many Fn buttons and Custom functions bring i.e. Panasonic/Oly to their cameras. When Fuji brings “Kaizen” firmware update with new features, other companies had already them in their cams and gives to their customers new features. So please Fuji, first bring all features to your customers that other makers have already given to their customers, and than ask us what more we need. Current “Kaizen” is a marketing joke but I have to admit it really works – many beggars worship you for dog’s meat like “2 features for a last time”.
there making good progress. i have no problem with my af, and i shoot my kids football team all the time.
Probably not with the X-M1. It does ok but it is seeking more than I would like. My X-T1 does good enough. Therefore I would like a final update for the X-M1 to get this one a bit better on AF.
I have X-E1 … Classic chrome is not possible because of different processing engine.. Electronic shutter, Configurable Q, Intervalometer … AF is already improved lot from what it was when its introduced …any improvement to me its a bonus… but my priority is Electronic Shutter, Intervalometer are easily possible CHDK does it for canon low end point and shoot also….
I have X-100S. Please add “Interlocking of Spot Metering and Focus area” and improved autofocus. Thanks!
I enjoy my X-Pro1 cameras, but I would would prefer progress with new hardware.
Over a dozen firmware updates are enough.
I agree. I want to see what Fuji is coming out with next in terms of camera bodies. I don’t need anymore firmware improvements to my X-Pro 1, unless they decide to provide the option to convert the files to 16-bit TIFF using the in-camera converter.
Maybe for you. Buy into another system and get all your wishes come true.. All other Fuji users will continue to enjoy their camera’s.
All?
I don’t think he asked too much. Software patches aren’t the ultimate solution to all.
Fuji!! Fujiiiiiii! Please give us proud owners of X100S a little bit of that sweet KAIZEN taste! I mentioned this once before. There are plenty of hardware differentiators for the X100T that will keep it higher than X100S forever. But some simple FW features like
1- Classic Chrome
2- Configurable Q menu
3- EV compensation for Auto-ISO in manual mode
are not that much for you.
I couldn’t agree more and I would gladly pay for that update.
maybe organic’s development is wasted.
Maybe not.
My only concern with an organic sensor is will I lose a card slot to a feeder slot. Need to slide those nutrition bars in to keep it fed.
I seem to be the only devoted user of the [silently abandoned] X-M1, but still I’d like an AF update for it.
I may be all alone – but I really would love to have face detection on my x100s, since sometimes – at very special occasions – other family members use the camera, and this would really help 🙂 and yes, I guess I would use it, too, just to be quicker at the kids parties, etc…
Where is the panorama mode on the X-M1 / X-A1 ? I feel narrow with my compact combo X-M1+27mm !
Looking forward to a new sensor, not firmware updates And, if they are working on a medium format mirrorless camera, that would be fantastic too. At the moment, my X-Pro 1 is fine…
This topic is about a last firmware update for older camera’s. Not about new sensors. Why did you ever by a Fuji if it is so bad you need to wine about it in every topic. Sell it and get another brand :/
Can you even read…I said my X-Pro 1 is fine.
Actually, I had some nice red wine on the beach this evening. Thanks anyways…
Yes but still. What wine do they serve?
Kaizen…. If they are able to better the autofocus system via firmware, they should give al the Fuji camera owners with similar hardware (X-E2) that update. The AF-system is horrible compared to Canon. I bought the Fuji because of the image quality, but it’s useless for sports. It’s ridiculous if the withheld the firmware for other camera’s. That’s more a marketing decision, than it is Kaizen…
Or maybe they’ve a totally separate firmware for each camera… Not very sustainable, but who knows what their software development practices look like ?
After all, there are evidences that they use duplicate code to perform a given function in different situations (magnified view in MF and in AF+MF).
Which Canon? The EOS-M or the 1Dx?
Ability to delete zoomed picture, direct af point selection, ficus peaking colors, interlock focus and spot metering…just operation annoyances of xe1…
And expanded ev range in bracketing, full size hpeg in raw for preview and one thing – when you half press shutter, the eye sensor is disengaged…i have sometimes composed via backscreen and then i have wanted to check via evf, but it is not possible without releasing shutter. Its really small thing, seldomly used, but i would prefered it the other way…
No feature from my suggestions would require he upgrade…unless the code could not fit into flash of course 🙂
That has the xtrans1 so your unlikely to receive an a update (doesn’t have ospdaf)
Oh indeed… Thanks! Going to be less lamenting on my part now/
+-3 exposure bracketing. I can’t believe this is still only at 1…
