  1. People always complain if a company releases something that doesn’t suit their needs. Companies don’t care about an indivdual’s needs…

      1. I think he means very specific people that are hardly representative of the market the camera is aimed at.

  2. Dpreview have given it a glowing ‘first look – hands on review’…might just get one instead of the x100s…I want a small camera with a fixed wide-to-normal lens for street and travel photography and it must have as large a sensor as possible (and a realistic price, so Leica and full frame are out)…was all set to pick up an x100s from the airport on my way to my holiday in Barcelona but the dicks at Dixons (must be something in the name??) have f**ked up and it arrives at the airport 4hrs after I take off…sorry for the aside rant, but I had to tell somebody…I’m absolutely screwing about it…thanks for reading!

  3. well I have the 27mm on pre-order from Park Cameras. It will fit well with the XE1.

going to be interesting to see how the July firmware will improve AF speed.

Now must avoid the 14mm temptation πŸ™‚

  4. If you look at it on a body only basis, ok, no, the xm1 is a POS… for the extra 100USD I’d rather get the XE-1 which has a viewfinder AND a real shutter dial, not a mode dial.

The only reason why the xm1 is “attractive” it’s the price, the camera+16-50 is just 700USD, which is 500 USD less than the xe-1 with the 18–55 (and that IS something). For 600USD you could get the x20 and while it’s a nice cam, it’s not interchangeable lens and 2/3″ sensor are completely shadowed by the XM1.

The XM1 is a camera for those who want to take pictures with much-greater-than-average IQ, who are on a budget and who are clueless as how to use a camera outside auto mode. Really, no aperture ring and no shutter dial? Sorry, but no fun, this is just a lame point and shoot with an aps-c sensor.

    1. I bought an X-E1 last friday (still in the mail) with a 18-55 and the 35mm lens. Do you think I made the right choice instead of waiting and buying this one (with the same lenses)?

Is going to be my first pro camera, so I never used a viewfinder and handled shutter speed. I’m interested in learning, so I’m a little worry if I made the right decision. Based on your post I think I did, but just checking πŸ™‚

      1. If you really want to learn and don’t want to outgrow your camera in a year, than yes, I would say that X-E1 is a much better option for you.

    2. Totally misguided and elitist post Kernel. In addition to the price, the other big selling point is the compact size. It’s still very capable of manual mode operation (as is an X20) and many will shoot it that way. Your assessment that those who use it will be clueless outside of auto mode smacks of ignorant condescension.

      1. “It’s still very capable of manual mode operation (as is an X20) and many will shoot it that way”

Totally agree, and in fact, I never said the opposite. But when you consider that the XE-1 has a shutter dial and the 18-55 has an aperture ring, then the XM1+16-50 comes out as a complete “button” camera.

What I love about xe-1 (in fact, the original fuji-x philosophy) is that you can set the picture parameters without having to delve in deep menus to select desired aperture or shutter, or pressing key combos to engage certain features. No, you have direct control over key picture parameters and that is something that a P&S user simply don’t cares, not necesarily because they don’t know how to use AP,SP or manual, but because they just want the picture to be taken and auto handles that. period.

Another case is a user like christian (read above) he comes from lower end cameras (P&S?) and yet he wants to learn photography by practicing, he will do so much better with the complete control at his hands than with a P&S. He will be able to experiment easily with aperture and shutter, moving the ring/dial will actually mean something to him (physically, technically and emotionally) he will make mistakes and he will take great pictures, and in the end, he’ll be happy and have fun shooting, because HE is in charge, not the camera, HE gets involved into the picture taking process, so HE enjoys the picture taking experience as well as the event, subject or circumstance he’s taking a picture to, and that is something that simply does not happen with P&S who only enjoy the latter, while the act of taking a picture is a mere formality to have a “tangible” reminder of the experience they lived when taking the picture.

Think of all the people that chose x20 over rx100 because “it’s no fun shooting the sony”, ok, the x20 may not have shutter and aperture controls but it does have a viewfinder and a manual zoom, the experience of shooting an x20 is so much more satisfying than an rx100, even though rx100 outperforms the x20. Same here.

BTW, Christian, you made the best choice, when you learn to drive if you learn stick then it’s a piece of cake driving auto, but when you learn auto, you’ll suffer learning stick, and we all know how much more satisfying is to drive stick for a person that enjoys to drive and doesnt see it just as a process of getting from point A to point B (unless you suffer from your knees/legs and clutching is painful)

  5. Thanks guys! I guess I will wait to use it first and if it doesnt convince me, I will send it back and buy this one.

    1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

If you’re not satisfied with the xe-1 fine, change the cam, but the XM1 is a downgrade from the XE1, you will lose viewfinder and control dials, not to mention a slower lens and your only win will be slightly smaller and tiltscreen.

  6. I can’t believe this pre-order is climbing the charts and I can’t even get my hands on the 2 month old x100s. If there’s one thing Fuji is doing right it’s creating demand..
