First off, thanks a lot to an anonymous source, who gave me the hint about the time of the Firmware release. I’ve put my alarm clock at 01:55 AM MEZ thanks to your hint 😉
So here it is, the new Fujfilm X-T1 FW 4.20. It brings all the improvements tha leaked FujiUSA announcement promised.
Special note to the Video Button becoming a function button: I’ve shared this rumor already back in October, and it comes from the same source, who told us that “there is an internal fujifilm lens roadmap that includes a 8mm, a 200mm and the 33mm.”
P.S.: There is also an announcement of support for Microsoft Windows 10 (Digital camera) – Read here
Over $3,000 raised for Charity with the X-shirts… keep it up 🙂
1. Using a flashgun in Bracketing/Continuous shooting
Optional flashguns can now be used for bracketing and burst photography. When using the EF-X8, which is bundled with the X-T1, the flash fires in ISO, FILM SIMULATION and WHITE BALANCE BKT modes.
2. Instant AF Setting in manual focus
Focus and exposure can now be locked when the AF-L button is used in manual focus mode. You can shoot after locking AF and AE with your thumb.
3. AF+MF operation with AF-L button
The AF-L button can be used to lock focus in AF+MF mode and you can adjust the focus more accurately using the lens’s focusing ring.
4. Focus zoom in AF+MF
The FOCUS ASSIST button can be used for focus zoom and you can fine tune focusing using the lens’s focusing ring with focus zoom activated.
5. Additional Custom Display options
Functions have been added to the DISP. CUSTOM SETTING option in the setup menu. Choose the information you want, then concentrate on shooting.
(Additional items)
Focus frame/Shooting mode/ Information background/Focus mode/Shutter type/Continuous mode/Dual IS mode/Movie mode /Blur warning
6. The Fn7 Button
The movie-record button now doubles as an Fn button (Fn7). Press and hold DISP/BACK to select what it controls.

Come on, Classic Chrome for the Pro 1.
Flash in burst mode is a nice addition. Just in time for xmas.
Hi Guys, just downloaded it but my file size is 41,602KB, download screen says it should be 40.6MB – Can anyone else check, I want to make sure the file isn’t corrupted before installing.
Update – couldn’t wait so updated – working as promised!
1KB=1024Bytes 41,602/1024=40.6 Old computer math!
I know lots of us never used movie record button before, It’s punctuality is not the same with other buttons, and I just want to add a tip here before you think about ‘my X-T1 record button doesn’t work properly, I need service/returning’ :
You have to keep press the record button for around 1s to activate it’s preset functionality. it’s not work the same as other Fn buttons(which activate instantly when you press it)
Just updated.. The only way to program the Movie Record button is via going into the menu/Setup 2 / Button/Dial Setting and assigning it there. The long press for this particular button doesn’t work the same as the other programmable buttons. Not a big issue really, if/when I ever decided to shoot a movie I can always quickly re-assign (probably the front function button) it to movie mode. The button previously known as the Movie button will not permanently be set for “focus mode” on my X-T1.
Thanks Fujifilm!
No, simply hold down the “Back” button for a second or two and you can get access to all of the function button settings. Easy!
Thanks.. I missed reading that.. Much nicer…
Well done Fuji!
Hey Patrick…the release dates you placed on your lens roadmap for the 8mm, 33mm and 200mm…how did you get those dates? Are the dates from your source?
they are random. If they come they will probably stretch into 2017
So umad…you were the source?
I’d love to be (and own a 33mm f/1.0)
But sorry – no I was not. But Patrick said that he randomly placed them on the roadmap, when this was posted first 😉
it’s random
Heyyyyyy my X-T1 has Classic Chrome after 4.20-ing 🙂
It had before…
Well it kinda depends what firmware they were previously running… If they were still running stock, then I suspect not.
KAIZEN ROCKS
but where is the X-E2 firmware??? :/
January
what will be in this update? the same as xt1 and xt10?
Im not sure anymore, if it will still come :/
Always happy for updates.
but nothing on the single – shot in continuous shot mode
Seriously love these guys for Kaizen. Amazing. Merry Xmas to Fuji!
Can’t believe it’s such a mess!
MF/S/C on bodies, clutch mecanism on some lenses, MF+AF on menus, AF on back button, etc… and X-bodies with different firmwares (xe2, xt1, x100s)…
so confusing….
Well, i’d like to have 3 things :
– AF can be memorized with back button (AF-L) with the ability to press shutter without re-autofocusing
– AF on shutter button
– Manual focus with ring. That clutch mecanism drives me nuts..
Anybody can help ? thanks
It’s no more confusing or messy than any DSLR. All your options are there on the XT1, some by default.
Different models have different firmware – sorry, not sure why that’s a problem?
Um… it is absolutely more confusing and broken. But a lot of people don’t seem to mind. Or they’re not the sort of people that need absolutely intelligent AF systems. I’m not, but the problems mentioned above by Bogarte Xavier annoy me to no end.
AF on shutter button? It’s there.
MF/S/C on bodies? If you don’t like DSLR-type controls then perhaps this is not the right sort of camera for you?
Looking at your post history it is clear rather a lot annoys you and you are easily annoyed by things others find trivial.
Sorry, but it’s a love/hate thing. Fuji’s are quite finicky on things such as off camera flash. Don’t even get me started on the fact they have no comprehensive tethered shooting option. Menus are notoriously confusing. Don’t even try to say they are not; compared to a DSLR.
“Don’t even try to say they are not; compared to a DSLR”
I won’t if you insist. I promise.
I use both for a living so it doesn’t really worry me much so maybe I’m not a typical poster here.
Cheers Y’all 🙂
As a X-E2 user…Sorry to say that I feel sad…When I bought my camera, they told me X-E2 is almost as good as X-T1 only in a different shape. But then, you know the story…
and then what? pls enlighten me 🙂
Has the XE2 got worse since you bought it?
Relatively, yes.
Hey, I’d be willing to sell you my old Cosina CT1EX if you like, it’s sitting right here on my desk and it hasn’t gotten any worse in the last few decades. Want it?
Yes. it’s called owing a digital camera, (or a car, or even a bicycle for that matter. )
Products improve, but few manufacturers improve the ones that they already sold like Fuji do, but every time they do someone complains.
Yep, that’s what they call it. But there are two problems:
– Just because CaNikon have been using planned obsolescence to sell more cameras instead of building a sustainable business model (financially AND ecologically) doesn’t in any way justify Fuji doing the same thing. Just the old teenage reasoning of “But everyone does that!”…
– When your choice of which models you update is completely random, you are asking for users to be pissed off. Not because they have a right to a FW update, but because they have a right to be treated equal. And the price argument is bogus. The X-T1 offered a lot of things for those 400 bucks it cost more. There was no reason for users to anticipate that it would be treated as a second class camera with FW updates. Same goes for the X100S.
The thing is, it’s not random. They give more updates to the Better performing in the market models. It’s just a reality of business. This is just not in terms of profits but also with market exposure and identity. As of now, the xti is what’s delivering that.
Why wouldn’t they follow the canikon business model if they choose to? It’s a proven formula. The truth is, it’s used not only in cameras but in any electronics in the market today.
I get your reasoning, but I still disagree. A consumer shouldn’t need to study sales numbers (which aren’t even official numbers) to decide which camera to buy. In Fuji’s case though, it seems like that is what one has to do. That – my friend – is random. Not as in roll-a-die-random, but as in you-have-no-idea-how-the-market-will-respond-to-a-product-random. If it is Fuji’s intention to let us wait for the market response before buying another camera from them, I don’t think that will make much financial sense.
The business model is a proven formula for filling the company pockets by milking the consumers. And a formula for making good hardware obsolete by refusing to update the software and thereby wrecking out environment. The truth is, my iPhone 4S is running iOS 9 and this 2009 Macbook I’m typing on runs OS 10.11. No, not all electronics in the market today. Just those companies who don’t understand that a happy customer will stay loyal and spend more money on your products than one treated with the I-got-your-money-now-kiss-my-behind-attitude.
At a consumers standpoint it’s kind of a bummer but you cannot fight economics. Simply put the law of diminishing returns is at play here. The xe2 has reached its crest and Any input they put into it will not significantly increase its sales.
Xe 2 is almost two years, any potential buyer would be expecting a new model anytime soon. so even if fuji makes the marked improvements on the existing model all potential buyers will still be focusing more on what’s to come. Just like when buying a car, most will wait for the new model as against buying the slightly improved old model. Put your place in Fuji as if you own the company, With limited resources, would you rather spend your R&D budget on slow moving commodities or on fast moving ones and or new development products?
Your customer reasoning is partly true but consider this even your beloved iPhone for example. How many owners would still buy the newest model than just upgrade it’s ios? Considering that the new iPhone have actually incremental improvements yet most, will still upgrade to the latest and greatest the moment it hits the market.
most people who complains about not getting any love from fuji are the speculators that down the road they will get an update instead of thinking if it’s usable for them when they purchase it. Remember just like in the stock market, speculators can make big profits but they also understand that they can lose too. Nothing is a sure shot unless it is guaranteed. Last I check, fuji never guaranteed any improvements only a promise to keep improving.
As in the old days of film, it still holds true. Invest in the glass not in the body.
Wonder the the XE-2 update is going to come. Everyone can say January. But no one really knows if it’s going to come.
Dual IS mode? oO
Kaizen at its best: Fuji adds IBIS via firmware update. FW 5.0 will also bring the 24 MP sensor and a leaf shutter. Didn’t you know?
Is it just my brain malfunctioning, or does my 16-55 f/2.8 resist to maintain in f/2.8 when I zoom out after the update to 4.20?
EDIT: it goes to f/3.2 when I zoom, and now and then it won´t go back to 2.8 at all… not sure what´s happening right now.
Thanks fuji. very useful for cuba holiday day after tomorrow.
3 little nigles:
1. AF+MF in zone mode – why is zoom not available? Yes I know they says not, I just think it should be
2. with focus ring pulled back and MF set on front selector if the AF-lock button is pressed it does nothing, IMO it should instantly focus – like it does with say 35mm f1.4 in MF mode
3 when you AF lock it turn the focus box green, but when you rotate focus manually it changes back to white. However AF is still locked. You can take many shots and it will not AF. Kinda OK if AF/AE locked as AE lock displayed at bottom of screen
But still happy to have the improvements.
4. if you assign video to another function button a single short press starts recording. so that will fill cards up inadvertently
Thanks as always Patrick for the great info.
