Good News (hopefully ;) ) – BUG FIXED! Fuji X-T1 Firmware might be ready for X-mas (and probably the 17th)

 photo KAIZEN_zps1fdb780f.png

On December 11 Fujifilm USA published the official announcement of the X-T1 FW4.20, sharing all the details of the update and saying it will be available for download on December 17.

But then something strange happened: Fujifilm USA had to remove it!

Why?

Because, according to my sources, the firmware was not planed for December 17 but later.

However, the article here on Fujirumors made thousands of X-T1 shooters cheer for joy for the nice Kaizen X-T1 Firmware X-mas present…. and this suddenly made a lot of pressure on Fujifilm, so they stepped on the gas pedal and worked hard to get it ready for the originally planed date: December 17.

And hear hear!!! I just got the following message from the same source, who is keeping me up to date with the latest evolution regarding the X-T1 Firmware. I quote:

“the thing [new X-T1 FW] that was supposed to happen in a few days and then not, might still happen – fixed ;)”

I know, to dissipate any doubt on this little rumor-drama, it would be great if Fujfilm would tell us why they removed the official FW announcement, but I doubt they will ever officially confirm what I wrote in this post (for some reason they don’t like me 😉 ).

On the other hand, you might understand that I have to protect my sources 110%, so I will never ever share more about this story than I do now. You can trust me or not, up to you… and in case you are undecided, this post might help you to take your decision.

Sometimes that’s the way it is: I have to pay for the confusion/changes/mess inside Fujifilm. But I’ve fastened my seatbelt and put on my helmet…

Is this the final thing?

While there are now again hopes to get the new X-T1 FW on Dec.17, you should always keep in mind, that Fuji can change release date of Firmware even in the last hours. Fujifilm absolutely wants to avoid the problem that occurred with X-Pro1 FW 3.00, which had to be taken off shortly after its release, because it was faulty. That’s why Firmware rumors are the trickiest to work on… there is nothing that can change so quickly like Firmware release dates.

It was a little bit of a drama, but at the end of story, we might get our X-mas present right in time :-).

    1. There will be NO MORE firmware updates for the X100s. Fuji’s top management confirmed this. Sadly, this proves that Fuji doesn’t care about it’s customers and simply pushes you to buy the X100t. As I said it before, for this reason, the x100s is my first and my last ever Fuji product. I’m sorry I fell for the whole Kaizen bullshit.

        1. I got my x100s knowing that Fuji upgrades its x100 line with meaningful features (See the original x100 story). Why do I need meaningful upgrades for my x100s? Because its focusing ability is mediocre at best when compared to the x100t which is identical hardware-wise to the x100s. I really fail to see why you defend Fuji when it’s more than obvious that they are just trying to push you to buy the newest model, a sales and marketing tactic they did not use with the original X100.

      1. Sadly, this proves that Fuji doesn’t care about it’s customers and simply pushes you to buy the X100t.

The X100s is a 3 year-old camera, with a lot of satisfied customers. Fuji waited 18 months before releasing the X100t, and released several firmware updates, including at least one where I see enthusiastic thanks from users on the DPReview forum; one such user wrote that a November 2013 update made manual mode “usable”. If the X100s didn’t satisfy you when you bought it, you should have returned it.

        1. Indeed. Fuji is no charitable institution, it’s a company.

I have an X100s, by the way. Would love Classic Chrome on it, but I perfectly understand that Fuji needs to move on and not become auto-cannibalistic.

  1. with x100s fuji is doing a very bad impression… no way to force a user to buy an x100t insted of a x100s with firmware update. Dear fuji, please correct the course! Do the KAIZEN for all the camera models, not the best seller only. and do not push to switch to another model just for a firmware update… (X100S vs X100T) 🙂 thank you and marry xmas…

    1. You’ll get the new AF system for sure (as already published). For the rest I’m still investigating. will let you know ASAP

        1. true. But normally the plan changes happen “behind the scenes”, and not when a Top Manager in an interview says there won’t be new FW updates for X100S.

          But hope dies last.

  2. Far better to slip a few days or weeks than to release something that has a noticeable bug.

On the subject of firmware updates for other models, like all companies Fujifilm will have a certain amount of development resource and they have to make a judgement on how they deploy it between new development, bug fixing, feature upgrades on older models etc. The X-T1 is getting new releases because it is a current model, the X100s has been left behind because it’s not current. Sometimes life is like that. Other cameras are in between so they release different versions at different times. X-E2 is coming, but an exact date is not known because engineering is like that sometimes.

    1. You do know that the X100s and X100t are nearly identical hardware-wise? It should be easiest and least expensive and resource consuming for Fuji to implement the firmware from the X100t to the X100s

      1. Yes, I realise that. I feel for you but for whatever reason Fujifilm have not done this so maybe there is something non-obvious about the X100s hardware that makes it difficult. Finding out this level of detail is not easy.

I was surprised to see the similarity in price between the X100s and X100t at the usual online dealers, I would expect the older model to be significantly cheaper. Maybe that means the X100s is still in demand?

        1. My guess is that they are simply behaving like just any other greedy corporation that only has profit on its mind. Remember that this an expensive camera, not just your entry level point and shoot.

I’m a wedding photographer and planned to take the x100s with me to use it at weddings. I realized that the autofocus just can’t keep up with fast movement even in decent light levels so it never left my camera bag after my first try.

          1. Until today I had not realised how expensive the X100 series is, I had thought it would be about 50% of the prices I’m seeing.

I am very happy with my X-T1, it compares very well against my Canon 60D and the XF lenses are a cut above many others. I hope that Fujifilm reconsider their decision about the X100s, it would be bad to throw away their generally good reputation for customer service.

          2. I don’t know why many so often underestimate the X100. It has a 35mm F2 built it, a Fuji-exclusive hybrid viewfinder, great apsc sensor, and luxury built that surpasses the Graphite X-T1. It’s a premium product, of course it’s expensive.

If it’s too much then get one used like i did, it’s definitely worth every penny IF you’re one to appreciate the little things. =) =) While others will be better off going the “i can do the same thing with *camera of choice here* for way less” way.

          3. I got into Fuji ’cause of the x100s (and probably like it more than the x-t1). You forgot, leaf shutter 😉

          4. It’s been worthwhile to discuss this, while I don’t have an immediate need for an X100 series camera it’s made me think about the advantages of a fixed lens camera and the high sync speed of the leaf shutter. I can now see why the X100t is as expensive as it is, I’ve not seen one up close so was unaware of the build quality.

          5. I’m the kind of person to appreciate the little things. Like:
            – EC working in manual
            – being able to directly access the focus points (and not needing to press up on my X100S and down on my X-E2)
            – the EVF-cover not sliding in and out for no reason and tremendously slowing down my camera use
            – EVF only + eye-sensor
            – the same battery as in the ILC models

The first three and faster/better AF and I would have loved my X100S to death. Now it’s being sold because those points are just way too annoying. Fuji didn’t innovate much on the hardware of the X100T and they know that. That’s the reason why we never got a FW update, because the “S” would have become nearly identical to the “T”. And the X100 line is premium so the argument people use concerning X-E2 and X-T10 won’t hold up.

          6. Yeah it’s definitely got some annoying quirks too. It’s kind of contradicting really that it can be unique and groundbreaking in many ways while they also continue to be oblivious to some odd specifics that just don’t work right.

          7. every other camera manufacturer only makes some minor bugix and realease a new body instead. you have to buy the camera because of the features it has and not the features it may have in the future. every time fuji releases a firmware update everyone with a diffrent camera complains. i think fuji sets the priority on cameras sold the most / and newest. x100s customers maybe much less then x100 and x100t. just sell your camera and get a new one. i own a x-e2 and would be happy with a new firmware. but i knew what i was gettin when bought the x-e2 and you also could have returned your x100s if you didnt like af or something else.

      2. May I ask how you really KNOW that not suppose/think/deduct/assume – the real hardware difference; we are talking the computing bit : processor/memory/flash memory to store programs/IO channels and the rest of it

    1. Yes, Dear FujiFilm, please do not forget the X-E2!

      – X-T1 auto-focus for X-E2!!

      – Some “basic” features like “View Mode Switching” are still missing after the latest firmware updates:
      1) Please add the possibility to assign a “SWITCH view mode” to any function button. (SWITCH without the need to look at a menu!)
      2) Please retain 3 different “view mode” settings for the 3 different operating modes:
      – Shooting mode –> EVF Only + Eye sensor to turn EVF on/off.
      – Playback mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
      – Change Settings mode –> Eye sensor: Automatic display selection using the eye sensor.
By giving this possibility, the photographer should be very rarely in the need to change View Mode settings.

      – More than +-1EV for AE Bracketing.
      – …

      Thanks a lot,
      Bob

PS: X-E2 and the X-T1 have mostly identical hardware; X-E2 was released only 3 months earlier than X-T1.

      1. This is what strikes me as extraordinary

” PS: X-E2 and the X-T1 have mostly identical hardware; X-E2 was released only 3 months earlier than X-T1. ”

How do you know that for a fact ? I am not talking specs I am talking hardware to get to those specs.

  3. Despite the known hardware differences between X-E2 and X-T1. the functionality of both cameras is almost the same. Then, please Fuji, a bit of Kaizen for the X-E2 firmware is really desired and necessary to amend some issues like this: when view mode [EVF only + OC sensor] is enabled no playback on LCD [???]. Also enable the possibility to [de]couple the AF with exposure and, the use of all four pads for choosing/moving AF points.
The improving on AF will always be very welcomed. And the viewfinder interface of the newer models on X-E2 also will be very appreciated.

    1. It’s funny to see users telling Fujifilm not to update firmware to get the best out of hardware because customers paid less for one model than the other…for sure the ones that defend this didn’t buy X-E2.

    2. its not the same hardware. x-t1 viewfinder is way bigger and better, x-e2 isnt weather resistant articulating lcd.

    3. Well next time Fuji should write that on the box if it is the case. Cause most people probably thought those 400 bucks were for weather resistance, larger EVF, articulating screen, more dials, better build and UHS-II support.

And your reasoning still doesn’t explain why Fuji doesn’t offer us paid upgrades for the cheaper cameras.

  4. X-T1 with flash trigger in continuous drive mode, been waiting a year + for this basic camera function (and I only wanted the X sync not TTL functionality). I’m keeping the faith Fuji. Next, a way better flash than that clunky Metz, maybe open source it and let the Chinese flash mfgrs make a proper flash.

  5. It would be nice not to be told if Fuji will or will not update the FW for the XE2. I would rather know my camera is as good as it’s gonna get and know this is all I can expect from it thus allowing me to properly evaluate the camera to my needs. If I deem it not up to my needs, eg focus speed or electronic shutter, etc, I can then decide to dump that camera and move on to a newer one, a Fuji product or not that will suit my needs. I’m sorry but I like knowing my creative vision isn’t restricted by mechanical limitations of my chosen equipment. If this waiting for a new FW update “rumored” to be in the works never comes out and/or to what we have been told to except, I know I’ll be pissed for waiting for nothing.

  6. Patrick, you say that Fuji doesn’t like you. Is that an assumption or have they actually been hostile toward you? Just curious. Seems like your site generates a lot of interest. I’m not sure why that would be a bad thing. I think back to the infamous iPhone 4 leak that reportedly made Steve Jobs so angry but ended up being nothing but good for Apple.

    1. I am the former Nikon enthusiast, and I was looking for mirrorless camera system for a while, debating between APS-C Fuji and FF Sony. Now my Nikon is gone, and this site played an important role in convincing me to get X-T1 with 5 lenses!

I think Fuji must be interested in the web sites like this – it is a very convenient & informal way to stay close with the most active Fuji followers.

Please keep up the good work!

      P.S.

On an unrelated note, I hope Fuji would hear us and implement the 2 stop AEB – there should not be any reason for not having an HDR option in the high-end camera, such as X-T1.

      1. If you read Rico’s book, you’ll get a better explanation that anything I can say explaining why it is not necessary with Xtrans iso less sensor – A good read I recommend, as an ex-fellow Nikon shooter it took me a wee while to adapt

        1. I also heard that xt1 got iso invariant sensor. This just means that the exposure should be varied with the shutter speed and iso doesn’t make any difference since the same amplification could be applied in the post processing.

So, long story short, 2 stop AEB would still make a huge difference if the shutter speed was the only variable.

Varying iso for HDR was never a good idea anyway, regardless of the sensor type because we don’t want to cature the noise…
