Do you need something from Trusted Source? Then here it is:
If you’ll fly to the CES in Las Vegas from 6th to 9th January in the hope to see the X-Pro2, you’ll be highly disappointed.
In fact, when asked, if the Fujifilm X-Pro2 will show up at CES, the Top-Trusted Japanese Source said
“No, not at CES. Later“
And for me, everything the Top Trusted Japanese source says, is like written in stone.
stay tuned,

as they say, copying is the most flattering compliment one can get 🙂
Apparently, there is but a fine line between a compliment and plagiarism.
Ok, later, but when? Spring? Summer? Autumn? 2040? :). Hopefully it’s a matter of days / weeks, not months 🙂
a source, who was right in the past, said Janaury. So as of now I still think it will come in January, but not at CES
Likely it isn’t final, Out for testing! Unlike the X PRO 1 they don’t want to FW updates to fix it. May still show sooner if testing gos well?
It does not makes sense to announce it and have it at the CP+ show. It makes way more sense to announce it just after CES but before the CP+. Not at CES for the reasons stated above, and before CP+ so international parties know to plan to attend for the long awaited announcement. Fuji needs to set expectations (even if via rumors) or risk not getting the audience they need to attend.
Fujifilm is proud to be Japanese, they wouldn’t dare making a big announcement at anything other than Japan’s CP+ (February 25-28, 2016) ;D
http://www.cpplus.jp/en/
That sounds very logical (as it should, given your picture!).
It’s also worth noting that CES has become a technology shouting match, and something as comparatively low-key as a launch of a new camera can get lost amid whatever it is that is the attention grabber shiny toy this time.
Last year, I saw people who had spent millions of dollars and years in R&D to develop wholly new and innovative technologies see their time in the sun taken away by a selfie stick.
Indeed. It’s likely they would wait for the storm to settle, then announce it at some point (get the people and internets hyped up), and finally showcase their latest additions to the public at CP+
Good thought ! And the announcement of the flagship X-T2 at nothing less than Photokina 2016 !!
That’s certainly possible. But assuming the X-Pro keeps the HVF that would surely mean it’s more expensive than what would be essentially the same camera with ‘just’ an EVF in the center.
I hope nobody is expecting the X-Pro2 to be cheap, because then you’ll be disappointed. The line-up may be messed up now because they skipped updating the X-Pro1, but remember MSRP was $1700 body-only when it was first announced. The X-Pro2 should again be a showcase of all their new tech, and again built to last. Hence the name. 🙂
Agree, they have to come with super high tech, I doubt that the HVF feature will be enough to name it PRO (btw Olympus is now developing an OVF software emulation).
So more is needed to compete with A7000/NX1 etc. I think it will have more innovative and differentiating tech on board than the HVF alone.
On the other hand there are now two different styles, the rangefinder and the DSLR style. So the X-T2 will be the DSLR style flagship with at least comparable specs as the X-Pro2 will have, maybe even better because the X-T2 will be announced later, probably at Photokina.
Not to be rude, but if you are after ‘credits’ and ‘likes’ then Facebook is your medium of choice. The fact that you are looking so much after the credits sounds a little…. narscistic.
This is still a ‘rumours’ site, and rumours supposed to be rumors not facts. Even though your success rate is quite high. I personally don’t see the need to credit a rumors site if one asks for where I ‘heard’ something.
In the end what you tell to others can be true and false.
Perhaps we will hear more about the IR camera at CES
I’d prefer to hear of a monochrome camera 🙂
Different story if you share the rumour on a forum or in your own website (where the traffic can generate cash).
I guess Patrick is asking web-admins to share the source, not anonymous folks on dpreview forum.
It’s not about “I heard something”, it’s about “I copy-paste content without telling where the information come from and without the agreement of the author”.
Actually it’s often the opposite: anonymous folks put the link to FR, and webadmins ask to remove it or edit it out by their own.
But I underestimated the reaction on my request, which is why I won’t make it anymore (and edited it out now).
So let me focus on giving you an even better service and better rumors here on FR.
So, we can be sure, no X-Pro2 at CES.
I personally like to give credits to digicame-info or whoever leaks Fuji information. I think i owe it to their work. I don’t like it to make their rumors look like they were mine. But that’s probably just me.
That said, it’s better to focus on my work… which means give you the precise date of the X-Pro2 announcement as soon as possible…. and push the hit rate even higher.
imho. Nicking images is a complete different story of which you do owe credits for..
i hope it is worth the wait. it should be a revolution, or at least a fuji revolution. we won’t forgive a four years wait for just more megapixels and a similar af speed.
i noticed a few rumor sites who post after you posted certain rumors… but you get no credit even though you posted first. don’t listen to the haters, credit should be given where credit is due.
Thanks. It was my error to bring it here on FR, though. You will get only the information you need now. Improve my service is the best answer I can give.
but when his rumors are so accurate, and he works so hard to get them, he deserves credit.
In the end he tells rumors that are so accurate you can almost say they are true. Don’t play down his success rate.
And Fuji misses another Christmas and Holiday season… Literally, they could not be handling this X-pro 2 situation any worse. I bet they’ll have an A7RIII coming out shortly after the X-pro 2 release.
And A7RIII will cost 5000$… different league…
It will cost $3000… And I completely disagree. You’re making the assumption that people shoot Fuji cameras because that’s what they can afford or because it’s a budget camera. Lots of people have switched from the canon 5d flagship because they wanted to get into a great mirrorless system. Those cameras were priced similarly to the a7rii.
I agree though… It seems like they’re in a different league… Although it might be closer if Fuji updated the X-pro series more frequently then every 4 years.
And many people buy Fuji because they are tired of high-technology and megapixels run.
They don’t need ultra-fast autofocus, internal 4K recording, 42mp… They just need a camera with good controls and good-enough IQ in a lightweight and sexy-looking package.
Especially true for X-Pro1 with “rangefinder” form-factor and hybrid view finder.
For sure, Fuji could make a new iteration of X-Pro every year but Fuji market-share isn’t enough to make profit and the new model would be better only by a little-margin (and they would lose more money than now… ).
It wouldn’t hurt if Fuji had all that and fast autofocus and high MP:)
Coming… 😉
I don’t know if those, who just bought the A7rII, will be happy about this.
Patrick, all respect but this is such a flawed argument. It comes from a place where people want to have the latest and greatest gear rather then the best camera they could have at the moment. Here’s a few examples:
iPhones – they come out ever year with slight improvements but people are happy to upgrade on a 2 or 3 year cycle. They aren’t upset with the brand for putting out new and improved tech every year.
And when I go to buy a camera I want the best thing out there. I’m happy there is a refresh and if I wanted to buy a camera today I cold get the A7rII vs the A7r. Or if I was ready to upgrade next October I would be grateful to buy an A7riii vs an a7rii that was a year old technology.
You could argue something about firmware as people on this site often do, but it seems as though Sony is now putting out firmware updates based on the community’s wants.
Would you rather have a company putting out updates every year or a company putting them out every 4-5? If you wanted to get into Fujis flagship line right now would you recommend people buying am X-pro1???
sorry… I just saw this video and found it funny (the whole video)… the part that inspired me to this relpy can be found at min. 3:38 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RzY56UQkR0
We all love digital rev, but the a7rii shoots great video from most of the reviews 🙂
The A7sii is specifically made for video so it’s a great choice for people who only care about video or do a lot of low light or night work.
It would be impossible to combine these cameras as one is high megapixel and one is low megapixel.
Imagine if Fuji gave us the regular option and the monochrome option? Or the apsc and the apsx option. Then we’d all be praising choice right?
It just seems that sometimes the users of this forum or quick to defend Fuji where they would blast other camera manufactures…. Like complaining about high megapixel of the a7rii when they have a cheaper a7ii option, or a video option, etc.
I love Fuji, I’m deeply invested in the system. But go use something else and give it a fair shot… It really leaves a lot to want with my Fuji lineup.
People are happy with a short product life cycle in phones because they pay less than $1,000 for a phone that they use to check FB and Twitter and email 100 times an hour. Two years in, it’s got no battery life left and the fashion accessory aspect of phones mean they might as well be walking around in a zoot suit and a trilby.
Cameras have traditionally not worked to the same timescale of life cycle. People used to change their camera once every decade and a half in film, and that’s dropped down to every three-to-five years. Not every 16 months.
They also expect a reasonable resale value, as you get with a second-hand iPhone. A used A7R is now worth as much as a standard lens in the Sony range, and doesn’t sell.
I think you’re agreeing with me without knowing it.
First off, I wasn’t saying people upgrade their iPhone every year, most people wait the two year cycle until they have an upgrade again and are fine with that. They don’t need to buy the new phone a year later at an I subsidized price.
And if you stand by your argument of having a camera every 3-5 years, wouldn’t you be happy to know when you’re pulling the trigger you’re getting the latest and greatest from a company your full invested in, rather then having to switch systems or buy a really outdated product (like X-pro1).
Photographers last concern should be resale value if theyre keeping their camera for a substantial period of time. I’m generally not thinking how much I’m going to sell my camera for that I just bought…
There’s one point none of you have mentioned regarding upgrading of mobile phones, that is the amount of people who’s phone is on contract. I that case they get to upgrade every 18/24 months for nothing, as it is more a question of renewing their contract, yes I know you are still paying for it but that is indirectly as you still have to pay your provider for calls and as has been mentioned, the battery life has more to do with updating your mobile today.
I know, let’s make a camera with a fixed in place battery, then you will have to renew within a year as the battery has got old and tired before its time.
I’d recommend :
– X-T1 (current Fuji flagship) OR X-T10 + lenses for the long-term investment and upgrade later if needed if they’ve no camera
– wait for X-Pro2
– stay with their system (I’m not paid by Fuji)
The fact that you need to recommend a lower end camera to buy now while you wait for the X-pro 2 basically solidifies my argument. And the X-T1 is a completely different camera then the rangefinder styled X-Pro. If you want a rangefinder you’re stuck buying a 4 year old camera, which is unacceptable.
At the very least they could have done am X-Pro1s along the way, that would have made a lot of people happy. Both autofocus and manual focus on the X-Pro1 are barely usable for anything that is moving.
X-T1 may be a different camera, it’s still the Fuji flagship. Which camera get firmware updates ? Which camera is promoted by Fuji ? Not X-Pro1. The fact that X-T1 isn’t a rangefinder means nothing. Is A7Rii a rangefinder ? no…
I don’t mean X-T1 is low end, but newer camera will come soon or later and they obviously be better and people might want to upgrade. Just as an A7RII owner might want to upgrade for A7RIV.
They could release a X-Pro1s at the same time than X-T1, but you know what ? Fuji wouldn’t have sell much more cameras, they’d have split their sales between two models and then lose money.
Yes and no.
Downgrade isn’t a bad thing. I bought 3 x-pro1 bodies. The recent one got in just a few weeks ago. It’s old technology, yes. But so what?
I’m trying to develop better photographic skills, and technology doesn’t really play a big part in it.
It’s all about the basics: light, composition, meaning.
Having a faster AF doesn’t help me. Not with the task at hand. So, yeah. The x-pro1 lets me do exactly what I want it to do. And that’s all I was asking for.
That’s great, a good photographer is going to make better photos then you with a point and shoot or phone, that’s not really an excuse for a camera manufacturer though. This is an argument about Fuji gear, not whether or not an individual is able to make a good photo with one of their cameras which we all know is possible.
Yeah that’s nice but I’ve been shooting for 20 yrs so yeah I wanted a newer, better XPro….a year ago.
I think every 2 years would be great. 4 years is too long, when technology moves at the rate it does.
Putting a product out for the Christmas season is now a dangerous course of action for any company to follow. You either invite Black Friday discounts that erode the price too quickly, or you invite people calling the company mean because the product doesn’t come with a 30% price cut immediately after launch. This is why the Sony RX1R II will not be available until December.
Better for a smaller company to have eight months of sales without significant price erosion, put it in for Black Friday 2016 price drops, and let the new price stabilise after that.
This also means that any last stocks of X-Pro1 can be sold off at fire sale prices during Black Friday 2015.
Guess they’ll aim for a release at the CP+ in February?
I think CP+ makes more sense. Fuji sells more cameras in the Japanese market than anywhere else, I believe.
It is disappointing though, that it has taken so long to release the new X-Pro. They better hit it out of the park with this release, from a marketing standpoint.
Just putting it out there but Fuji should release an Xt10 bayer version with Panasonic g8x autofocus speed and a snap shot feature like the Ricoh GR.
The snap shot ‘feature’ is idiotic, it’s called manual focus. Fuji has had a focus- and DoF scale in live view or the OVF that you can set to any distance you want since the very beginning of the X series.
Sorry, it’s illogical so it annoys me.
hey, Annoyed, have you actually used a GR? TAV mode is great and the snap does make things quicker your can operate the GR in one hand. Sure its basically manual/zone focusing but it made really accessible on the GR. Ask anyone who has used for for at least a few days.
GR with EVF = nirvana
can Fuji instantly go to a preset focus distance with a full press of the shutter while in AF mode? Nope.
I have one mode set to snap at hyperfocal distance. I can hit the on button and shoot, instantly, no setting aperture or focus distance.
Or does “idiotic” mean very useful? I dunno.
I’m an idiot: I admit it. I purchased an X-Pro 1 thinking it would be a digital rangefinder. It stayed with me for about a year or so. I used it last at an audiophile hi-res event, shooting a 90/2,8 Elmarit-M.
The next move was obvious: don’t wait around for cameras that may or may not implement the interfaces I need. I wanted Leica from the first. I lost. I then purchased an M 240. And it is great. No, ISO isn’t as good. Whatever. Utility and fun and reliability (turning a dial and not accidentally changing anything else) is what I’m after.
My wife still complains that I sold the D5000 for the X-T1. I’m sorry, wife. But I think everyone at these forums will be happy to see me go.
Still have X-Pro1, but since I got M240 I haven’t used Fuji once.
Yeah.
I guess the 3 of you desperately needs validation, don’t you. Gave up on fuji yet, lurks around a fuji forum.
The Leica forum must be so ho-hum that you need to be here to feel alive. LOL!
LOL.
Yeah.
Really…’LOL’….that was supposed to be funny?? Poor sense of humor my friend.
I still follow Fuji Rumors because I’m interested in gear and curious to see if/when an X-Pro2 will come out and if so what it looks like. Will I buy one?? No.
Sure, feel free to see what’s new with fuji but what baffles me are general comments like ” I haven’t touch my fuji since getting the leica. ” statements.
Tell me , what relevance do these kind of statement add to the discussion? Nothing, it’s just a personal info. Nobody here benefits from, its merely a declaration that you have one. Maybe just to brag or are you waiting for somebody here to give you a high five for buying one? don’t know but in any case… Big Whup! I also have a Leica but I love Fuji so when in this forum I keep my comments as much as possible relevant to fuji.
BTW, by your reasoning, you shouldn’t have told us that you have a Leica. That bit of personal information isn’t necessary. Neither is the bit that you love Fuji.
Mind, the person that said they haven’t touched their Fuji since purchasing an M240… how is that NOT relevant to Fuji? It wasn’t their Nikon that they haven’t touched since getting one. If practicing what you preach is that important, practice it. Stop preaching with your fingers crossed behind your back.
I knew one of you would say that when I said I also have one but whatever… it was a demonstration that that info is irrelevant. You can argue all day but the truth is, you guys got riled up because you got CALLED ON for saying so.
Of course it’s not relevant, Leica and fuji have different market bracket. Fuji is simply filling a market void left by leica due to their exorbitant price.
Do you think fuji would say “deym” we need to stop R&D and listen to these 3 guys in a fuji forum just bought a Leica and they like it better. Puhleez spare us.
So save us the BS, give each other a slap in the butt for owning a Leica and go on your merry way. Nuff said…
How did we get called on for saying … and what does called on even mean? No, you are questioning Fuji-owning members whilst not doing the same for every other ridiculous, personal claim and piece of unnecessary information.
I could care less about being ‘called on’ whatever that means apart from you showing up at my house or something.
I think it’s also fair to look at prices. Fujifilm are at the top of the APS-C brand. The X-Pro 1 debuted at 1800$, or only a bit cheaper than the Leica T. It is BS to assume that Leica are exorbitant, or that Fuji are not. Personally I know about ten people with Fujifilm cameras. And not a single one has bought only ONE of them. They’ve bought several, half of them wishing the one they bought second was what came out first. The others are just into it.
They have spent more on bodies than their Leica T brethren. Yes, Leica bodies cost more. But Fujifilm cameras cost more than Olympus or Nikon cameras in the same sensor or market bracket. So don’t go off about price. It is irrelevant unless you are willing to concede that you can get as much camera for a lot less money.
Finally, of course I don’t want Fujifilm to stop R&D. And I never said I did. You are reading things into what I wrote. I said that _I_ made a mistake. Go ahead and read the original post again.
One thing you need to learn is that a large part of the X fanbase have said multiple times that they own a digital contax G or Leica. It is all about playing up or down to a look for a lot of people. So give yourself a slap on the ass. Give it to your neighbours. No one cares. If image is what is important for you, or the X fan base, great. If not, and it really is about making the best cameras, Fujifilm need to hear criticism. They do not hear even the slightest real criticism. All major reviews of them are written with blinders on.
I didn’t get into X because I wanted a Leica. I wanted anything but one. I wasn’t antagonistic toward Leica like you appear to be. I have no idea why you are, either. But I expected more, especially from such a large marketing push and so much rabid support from the fan base.
If you want to make a properly researched attack, do it against me: I said I made a mistake. I read the reviews and took them for honest opinion. I was wrong. I now have the camera I was originally looking for. And you do, too. God bless you, Mr. Rosewater.
And I still have an X-T1. I look forward to help regarding button replacement options, bowed interface door replacement, firmware update, etc.
Does it matter why I, or anyone else, still follows this site? Especially as an X owner, I should hope not. I’ve said before that this site especially is a fanboy site, and most rumour sites are, but let’s get serious.
Now, would you say the same thing to people that are looking, but don’t yet have an X camera? Because, if I sold mine, we’d be in the same camp.
By the way, don’t forums like this exist for validation? By golly, if you don’t see that, and you only see that three X owners can prefer another brand, and wished for more from the outset, you need to re-evaluate your position.
Agreed, I gave up on the XPro2 a year ago and bought the M240. A hell of a lot of money but haven’t regretted it for a second, my XPro1 has been collecting dust ever since.
Fuji missed the boat, at the very least they should have released an XPro1S.
With all due respect – I really don’t get all this disappointment. When I was still using Nikon cameras, every man and it’s dog was complaining about the too fast paced release cycle (read too expensive to follow) : 1 year for entry level/consumer then 2 years for top amateur and then 4 years (usually 2 body lines normal then S or X intertwined ) for pro.
Fuji went for (apparently) a notably slower release cycle and software upgrades which quite vastly transform and improve bodies and lenses; In the meantime they built an almost complete set of quality to high-quality lenses, deployed the XE, X100, XT lines and still people complain and then (some ) buy a 3 to 4 times more expensive body!
Like I said I don’t get it.
I didn’t mention that I needed or wanted a fast release cycle. I think you’ll not find either in my comment. You’ll find that I blamed myself for my purchase. Now, I wasn’t clear. And to be honest, most fan reviews at the time hailed the X-Pro 1 as the greatest thing ever. Hardly anyone mentioned write-speed, or interface speed concerns. Those were what made me sell it among others.
I agree with you re: lenses. Great release schedule. And amazing line up today.
And while I’m as culpable in making a bad decision as anyone, I relied on very poor reviews of the camera. That is my fault, but looking back, many of the reviews read like advertisements.
I purchased an M240, which is about than 3x the price of a brand new X Pro 1 (which debuted at nearly 1800$ here in Japan) in the same year. Today, the X-Pro 1 goes for less than 600 brand new, or a selling price 1/3 of its original. The M240 still goes brand new for what it did, and used, has lost (in Japan) roughly 1/4 off the top for a pretty used one, sometimes much less.
If I decided to sell my M240, I would have lost much less as a percentage than had I sold my X-Pro 1 today.
As to your release cycle argument, Fujifilm have a pretty fast release for the X100 and XE line up. While the X-E hasn’t been touched in two years, it was updated every year on the year twice, and followed up with an X-T10, which, for all we know, may be the replacement for the X-E3.
It’s all conjecture.
So, in three years, Fujifilm have released:
X-Pro 1
X-E1
X-E2
X-T1
X-T10
across two or three lines (depending how you count the X-T and X-E series).
They have updated the X100 line twice for three cameras. I actually like slower release cycles, but I wouldn’t call the X line slow. It is iterative, and, in some cases, pretty fast. In fact, their release rate is roughly on par with Nikon. It is perhaps a bit less organised, and it isn’t possible to determine the top camera in the lineup, like it is with Nikon. Is it the X-Pro 1? Is it the X-T1?
They have fewer lines to support, which is a good thing, but they are iterating each line as fast as anyone (if you count the X-Pro 1 a flagship camera (price-based of course)).
You read things into what I said that matched your preconceived notions of my problems with the series, and as a result, didn’t understand. Playing agitator without first understanding why I said what I said wasn’t smart. Nor was it fair.
I did not mean my comment as a personal attack or as a “play agitator” as you qualify it. Sorry if it came across that way.
I do not think that you should blame yourself for your purchase, after all, until you’ve used a product, it is hard to tell that it will fit, or not, your needs.
Yes the reviews looked a lot like advertising, but in fairness to the reviewers the XPRO1, with all it’s quirks was a bit of a revolution in it’s time. Many people (including you if memory serves) produced great images, with some pleasure for a good while.
The point I was trying to make is that I, for one, am happy that the flagship lines (XPRO and may be XT) are not refreshed too frequently despite their relatively low cost (compared to the top of the line from Nikon et al) . Fuji X has allowed me to slow down my pace allround : when taking pictures or refreshing my gear.
Today I have a fantastic set of lenses – for far less than the equivalent in Nikon’s lineup ( if they even exist) – and the bodies are – to me – very adequate. After all I started this journey a while back, when all I had was MF and a needle on the side of the view finder. The Fuji is the one body that let me take pictures easily, despite all the electronic gizmos. I could never achieve the same ease with my Nikons.
Another mistake I made was hooking up so much in fan sites. If a person has a reasonable complaint about a product that doesn’t fit the modus operandi of that fan site, it is spat upon. I’m not the only one to receive ridiculous abuse for complaining about things like the above and more.
You are right, Digidergm, I enjoyed the X-Pro 1. Although, not as much as a simple dSLR. I was among the few that found I took fewer photos. Worse battery life, slower operation, crazy off-to-on times, etc., made me use it only when I really felt like it. I admit that I’m among the few.
As far as flagships go, if Fujifilm wanted to make the X-T1 to the same spec as a D800 or a D4, it would cost the same, if not more. It is already priced at parity or above cameras competing directly with it in the APS-C world. If either were FF, they would cost a LOT more.
And the lenses cost the same or more as the equivalent FOV/DOF lenses on FF Nikon. Now, Nikon are stupid. They have a horrible line up for APS-C and deserve all the blame they are given. Fujifilm have made the most complete APS-C lens line up in a very short while. They deserve all the praise. And I’m glad you love your Fujifilm cameras. I am. There is a point, however, when this rumour site fanboyism is unfair and certainly devoid of introspection.
I will have you know, however, that I used the X-T1 at a recent Embassy shoot in Tokyo. It was the back up to my M240. It shot 37 images out of 500 or so. I dislike it as a camera, but appreciate that I had it on hand to hold a 90mm F/2 M lens.
if /calmly/ saying
1- I have learnt to slow down and enjoy what I have and stopped running after the next available gizmo,
2- That I find mildly amusing that whatever a (read any) manufacturer does or does not there will be people up in arms because the new body is too late/too early; has too many/too few megapixel;Too many/too few this or that.
is called ” rumour site fanboyism unfair and certainly devoid of introspection ” then so fuc**ing be it.
1. I am very glad that you have learned to enjoy/slow down and stopped running after the next available gizmo. I wish I had learned that three years ago, if not sooner.
2. to this point, I would ask you to consider outbound links from this site: made to bolster Fujifilm image. Everything that says: I’ve ditched X camera or Y camera, or there is no going back, are featured front and centre, and backed by hounding calls, praising Fujiflm like it was perfect.
I am with you: complaining that a body is too late/early, too many/few megapixels is bad. But I didn’t come in complaining about that. I complained that its write speed was ridiculously slow and that I made a mistake in buying it. I put the blame squarely on myself. And on what I still consider to be idiotic and misleading reviews.
Again, I am glad you found the system for you. I am glad that it has transformed your photography, or your enjoyment of it. I wish that it had done the same for me.
Although I very much enjoy the Fuji X system for what it is (nothing more, nothing less) I can relate to some of the points you have postulated, and since elaborated on.
I have to wonder though, considering your position on the X-Pro 1 and now the X-T1, did the Fuji sirens lure into buying not one, but two cameras you ultimately didn’t like? Fool me once, fool me twice and all that.
Roy, I preferred the X-Pro 1. The reasons are:
1. easier to hold because its flatter body with grip skid doesn’t force you to ‘grip’ it a certain way.
2. It had way fewer buttons to accidentally press.
3. Even my wife’s small fingers accidentally trip metering/drive modes on the X-T1.
4. The back navigation buttons are way easier to press with or without gloves.
5. It has a threaded shutter release that is compatible with loads and loads of cameras.
6. It switches and stays more logically from EVF/OVF to LCD for playback and shooting.
7. And, least nerdy of me: while not a looker, it has a unique shape and shooting experience among non-Leica mirrorless cameras.
What I prefer about the X-T1:
1. The same slow and fast cards write super quick.
2. Its shutter is marginally quieter.
3. Wifi – which is very helpful in the studio.
Both cameras tun off and on and initialise like point-and-shoot cameras, where the lens goes in and out and makes noise, so that you can’t set focus prior to or after the camera is on. Both require two dials to manually select an exposure speed. There are other pretty serious problems, but none of them bother most X shooters.
I’m not sure why I went for the X-T1 to be honest. I was still a semi-happy X-Pro 1 owner, but was completely frustrated by how long it took to write to card and the slow EVF that made using manual lenses very difficult, especially in low lit events. And while I had an A7r for use in the studio, I needed a camera more reliable than the X-Pro 1 for events. I didn’t want to take my studio cameras out in case I broke them or they malfunctioned. Every camera I own has been to the shop at least once. The X-Pro 1 was the notable exception, but I no longer own it. The X-T1 has gone in once and should go in again. The A7r has gone in twice. The M240 once.
So in terms of technical reliability, they are each problematic. But in terms of shooting reliability, the X-Pro 1 was by far the worst of the event shooting cameras I’ve used.
Looking back, I wish I hadn’t purchased the X-T1. It has helped me in several events and certainly made back its investment, but it is a camera that is too fiddly (and my hands are not big) for me, and, perhaps more importantly, not fun for _me_ to use.
Fair enough. Horses for courses I guess.
Although the X system has improved significantly over the years, I share your lack of trust in their reliability. I have to admit that by now, it’s mostly an emotional thing for me, fed by how quirky the original X100 would behave in anything but the most ideal situations, but I still reach for my OM-D if I need to shoot something mission critical.
The X is my fun system though. It appeals to a more artistic, emotional level while the OM-D is just a workhorse to get the job done.
Most of my photography isn’t fast paced and doesn’t suffer from missing a stride here and there, but I can understand your frustration about the operational aspect of the Fuji’s when you do shoot in situations where you just need the damn thing to work pronto.
Each generation of the X system has beckoned me into upgrading (mostly unsuccessfully, thank god) to get just that little bit closer to photographic nirvana, and slowly but surely, I’m sure they’ll get close enough for my purposes. Until then, it’s making do with what we got and fortunately, it’s a predominantly joyful experience for me.
I certainly wouldn’t mind if you posted your experiences with the M240 set against the X system. I think it could be informative to those with an open mind. At the end of the day, it’s just gear. Pick what you prefer and don’t fret over other people’s preferences.
I may write that article. I used to heavily be into blogging, but lately have had no energy for it. I have a store of articles I’m keen on writing, but may never get around to them.
For sure I will write about why I chose the M240 and where it suits my purposes and where it does not. I’m also keen on putting the GX680 up against my other workhorse, the Rollei X-ACT 2 prior to probably selling both for a Linhof M679cs.
I certainly won’t write the M240 article on the general internet, but at ohm-image.net. If Patrick were keen, I’d be happy to write up something about the GX680 VS the Rollei X-ACT 2, but I reckon the audience for that is low. And, I’ve probably fallen out of favour with Patrick after a few comments I’ve made about Fuji Rumors being a fan site.
That said, you are right: it is just gear. Each of us has our own needs. Some are very specific (GX680 or X-ACT 2), others are less so (X-Pro 1 M240, etc.), and each camera fails or succeeds against a bar we set for expected utility.
dreaming of ibis. would be the so nice for all the primes. sony sensor sony ibis and i will order 2 x-pro2 😉
X-Pro2 will become the second ghost camera after Pentax full-frame…This long wait starting to be very annoyng and disappointing.
Fuji X-Pro2 is the Duke Nukem Forever of cameras.
Nice one 🙂 Although I hope that doesn’t mean that it’ll be bought out by another company before it gets released in a final disappointing form.
Maybe its a good idea how ‘good’ the camera industry is doing.
2010 the manufacturers sold over 120 million pieces of DSLR.
2015 seems not to even match 30 million pieces of dslr INCLUDING mirrorless systems.
That says a lot about the camera business and how well thought out a new camera should be. R&D of new cameras is expensive and one mistake can mean the end of Fujifilm into the camera business.
I think it says more about how thick consumers are, in being so slow to realise that they need to buy a completely assembled DSLR, rather than just pieces of one.
The long wait is almost over. Hopefully it turns out to be worthy upgrade. They definitely need the next generation of X-Series cameras in 2016. I am looking forward to it.
I feel like nobody has commented on what will be one of the biggest features of the X-Pro2 minus all the crazy Sony tech they will have to compete with.
This feature is the viewfinder. With all the amazing new viewfinders (X-T1, A7rII, Leica Q, Leica SL) will a hybrid viewfinder be able to be incorporated in this way on the EVF side? Or will we have to have a lower quality EVF to be able to have the optical Viewfinder as well?
I’m not really sure how this tech works so it would be great to know.
imho, its Fuji’s kaizen when you open some above the simple tech view
If its not a 4K EVF then i’ll really hope Fuji left out the optical viewfinder.
They may do so anyway as in 9 out of 10 times the lens is in the way anyaway.
crap. i was really hoping to see it in the flesh at ces
OK so when is the xpro2 coming out? Or being presented to be world? It can’t be too long if they have models out for review with bloggers…right?
Yep later like the end of 3016
The fourth version of the X100 will be out before the XP2 ……. I hope
when X-PRO2 hits the market after all this long lasted waiting and the price will be like 2500€/$ , I’ll laugh my pants off…… and then cry
In ages rumors and rumors about the XPro2. Since two years now I was waiting for this camera but I’m still making shifts with my old gear like a Nikon DSLR and two compact cams. Last year I was sure that it will be released for the Photokina – but nothing happened. Even Leica is nowadays more brave and innovative. Enough is enough – somebody said it’s a really ghost cam and he’s right.
During my last trip to Madeira I tried a Sony Alpha 7II – and it was brilliant. Now it’s time to realign to the competitors like Sony, Leica or…doesn’t matter… I don’t want to wait any longer (till 3016).
Bye bye. 🙂
