According to our sources, the Fujfilm X-E2s will feature the same 16MP X-TransII sensor of its predecessor, the X-E2.
Always according to FujiRumors sources, the most relevant changes/improvements compared to the X-E2 will be firmware based.
It will be announced along with the X-Pro2 and the XF100-400, on the 15th of January.
I hear you are scared now about your long rumored X-E2 Firmware update. Don’t worry. I have multiple confirmation from sources and even Fujifilm itself said that it will come in… mid-January. Just read this post.
stay tuned,

Hopefully they will fix JPEG waxing issue?
Of course not.
And what about X-Pro 2 and JPEG waxing?
Don’t worry, I’m sure it will wax perfectly.
????????
Thank you Rico Pfirstinger, I appreciate your answer.
if this news is true and if the X2S differs from xe2 only for firmware I will leave forever fuji. this is lack of seriousness!
I just bought an xe2 and I’m still waiting for a firwmware update! This is the last chance for fuji after the big “froud” with the missing fitm update on x100s just for marketing reasons! 🙁
come on patrick, what’s inside the x-pro2? you must know but you don’t wanna say it. what’s the surprise? 16mp xtrans??
12 MP Bayer with 2 AA filters.
Great for my Moire shirt !
Definitely. It’s hard to get higher resolutions with 1st generation organic sensors, but on the bright side, there’s no more need for batteries, just feed the camera once or twice a day depending on your usage pattern. Don’t worry: If you just want to store the camera for future use, it can enter hibernation mode.
correction – 2 AA batteries.
How did you know?!
I’m not one of Patrick’s named sources but I will be one after this!
Makes no sense, both a firmware update and a ‘new’ camera.
Who would pay extra for the X-E2s ?
That could only mean that the X-E2 update doesn’t get (or doesn’t have the hardware for) the new AF system after all, but would only get a few functional tweaks and fixes. Big bummer, but the only way this new camera makes sense..
It could easily be that the ‘S’ has features that, though technically based in firmware rather than hardware, can’t be patched into the E2. So the E2 gets whatever can be patched in, and the S gets that, plus other tweaks. It could well be that the S won’t cost more than the E2, and simply replaces it outright.
That said, it does seem very inane to relaunch a camera without any kind and of hardware change.
That’s what i said. But a ‘new’ camera always costs more. Of course i wasn’t talking about MSRP but the price at which you can actually get it. Just look at the Ricoh GR 2. Same camera, just added WiFi. But the price was ‘reset’ back to MSRP adding hundreds of $/€. Though this should be a more useful upgrade than WiFi of course.
Actually they did add $100 on the GR2 but they changed their mind later, lol. Guess we should actually consider ourselves lucky with a X-E2s that has actual improvements. ^^
Okay now that’s a bad new. I was praying for a new sensor and 🙁
This is very very disappointing and sad because it means that after 2.5 year Fuji hasn’t nothing new to offer!
Well, you do get the “S”.
Bad news…reading this, I’m afraid of what sensor will be inside the X-Pro2…
It’s organic, but I won’t bite you. At least not too hard.
The sensor does….. the beast inside, you know 🙂
No risk, no fun!
Kind of saw that coming. Fuji need to start to differentiate between their models more with different sensors. Xpro and xt will sport higher mp sensors.. Makes sense if you are going to spend more. It would be a total shame is fujifilm don’t do something more with the e2s..
XE2S could have been like the A7s : lower resolution, higher dynamic range. A daring choice, like those Fuji made in the past.
I think they should have skipped this. Focus on coming back with new current relevant features and not piss off former owners.
Come on, I’m sure they worked very hard to create a product that would alienate everybody.
I am delighted with the X-Trans II sensor on the current lineup, and will gladly purchase a lightly used X-E2 from someone chasing the latest upgrade when the time comes. And when the X-T2 comes out I’ll pick up an X-T1 at half the original price. For those reasons alone I hope there is a bigger appreciable difference between the X-E2 and X-E2s.
I think that it will have xtrans sensor III, otherwise i dont understand why would they come out with a camera that has smaĺ improvements, possibly 1/8000 shutterspeed
Stillborn camera…
I wonder why my messages are so delayed? perhaps because they are negative?
no… for some reason the comment system disqus put them all into the SPAM folder. I approved them all now
Ok, thank you patrick
Makes sense to me.
Other manufacturers have put out new models which where nothing but a firmware upgrade.
Giving a firmwareupgrade to the old customers and marketing the camera (with tiny changes and new firmware) as a new one gives publicity and probably new buyers (a new camera is always more exiting than a 2 year old with a firmwareupdate)
Just wait until they announce the X-E2S Plus Mk II.
if the X-E2s would get that Firmwareupdate too, I couldn’t care less.
Now…this is real KAIZEN. I am tempted to laugh.
KAIZEN is only software based.
I agree with you….. i was reacting to “most relevant changes/improvements compared to the X-E2 will be firmware based´´
The most relevant change is the “S” on the front.
No wonder, since you are one of those who normally have early access to the fuji cameras and giving feedbacks. You must have been doing a wonderful job.
Turns out I mistakenly sent my feedback to Sony and Olympus.
My bad.
is this going to be a completely new camera like the XT1 after the FW update 4.0 ?
I don’t know anything about a firmware update, except that there will be one.
don’t forget the newly designed grip 😉
So should we expect an X-T1s, with the same sensor?
WTF
Great idea!
Yes, together with a great X-T1 FW 5.0/6.0 update. Would be marvelous !
it was pretty obvious…the “s” would mean something other than a new sensor…
but not even a flip screen? jeh…
?????
Lol, Fuji release another X-E2s for a firmware improvment? What a joke …
They announce too there will be firmware update for Fuji X-E2. Now they release a new camera. Nonsense …
This is going to be the most retro camera in the market….even the sensor is retro 🙂
A good one, Bremer 🙂
thanks
Great quote Bremer, 13 upvotes until now ! (seriously).
thanks…
I think if Fuji don’t turn out some improvements beyond FW tinkering, they will “loose the dressing room”
Paid-for firmware update … within a camera !
Was it really the best solution ?
Rico, How hard are you laughing right now at all the comments on what the “s” means? You’ve probably had the camera for review for weeks!
I’m having a good time, and TBH, I guess I have had the camera since late 2013.
Patrick, any clue about X100T successor, X200 or whatever ?? Thanks
You mean the X100TS?
Mk2
lol
X100TooSoon?
Better than the X100TLTL.
Too Little Too Late.
seriously fujifilm? you test even the most faithful of your fanboys pulling a stunt like this
They do! Isn’t it great?
Is Rico drunk?
It’s the Dengue fever.
Looks like you won’t have to entirely rewrite your XE2 book for the XE2s… Happy ?
I don’t intend to touch that book.
I thought so too. He’s going crazy hahahah
Be nice to him…he will be bringing us the first review of the XEs 🙂
I doubt it. Don’t wanna waste my time. Or yours.
Rico, I’m glad to see your pissed about this.
rico is pissed that he, unlike me, didnt sell all his fuji gear for a very decent Price two weeks ago and didnt move to a real and supported system, rather than waiting for one ransomware.
this X-E2s and even the X-Pro2 are real jokes.
That must be it!
Then again, I sold my X-Pro2 at a very decent price.
oh ok…is that why you decided to come in a mock the rest of us.
Mocking the rest of us seems to be Fuji’s privilege, don’t you think?
if you sold your stuff, why even bother being here?
Gras always greener on the other side I guess
about the message: im very interested in all kind of camera stuff
about your comment: fuji allways holds the grass next to you nose but never feeds you, not sure if that the fun part here
And, my guess is that you suck at photography, and there isn’t a camera that can solve that.
The fact is most of the cameras available today are excellent cameras…the users are the ones that need to catch up…just take a look at the A7rii groups/photos on Flickr and 500px and this is very obvious – the so-called greatest mirrorless camera, which aparantly shames all others, and it is rare to see any compelling, well-taken photos taken with it.
But that’s not really Sony’s fault, either, is it?
Hey, it’s like cars: So many great, fast, expensive cars, but so little great drivers.
Amazing news! Thank you FUJIFILM! F-word.
And it isn’t even April 1st!
Just wait for Fuji’s April 1st announcements! You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
Just came here to see all the hate an not yet existing product can cause.
It’s nothing but hilarious. Would love to see some stats how many here are Fuji shooters and how many are just trolls.
Some may actually be both.
I wonder why so many trolls buy Fuji cameras…
I have a solution for you… simply don’t read 😀
This has been the most fun, on this rumor site, I’ve had in some time. 🙂 Thank you Rico!!
It`s called Fujihumor.com for a reason.
I was just going to say that. LOL All this hate and discontent over a “rumor”. 🙂 We’ll see what really happens in about 17 days.
Almost the end of the year, I suppose. And (seriously) thank you Rico for all the great contributions you made for us this year !
The S stands for stand by hahaa
S for “same old stuff” 🙁
X-E2SSD
Same Same, but Different.
So is the X-E2S replacing what was supposed to be a firmware upgrade for the X-E2?
Edit: Yes, I see what it says in the post, but I have to wonder if the X-E2 firmware update isn’t going to be what we thought it was.
I’m sure Fujifilm’s 1st april announcement will be much better than this.. should have been an X-E2ss (same sh1t) 😉
Fuji just revamped their business model. They are now “The Onion” of photography.
but you will continue to pump out re-hashed Fuji manuals to make a buck. I hope you will give XE2 owners a discount for getting the the latest XE2s manual.
Guess Fuji is really wants to compete with Leica 😀
I love fujis courage. They know this is will cause a storm with you spec fans and they still make the correct decision for photographers. I was really afraid there would be no 16Mp option left in the line-up. Modern processing will give a new life to one of the best sensors ever made without us having to deal with larger files or new picture flavour.
Whatever you’re smoking, I’d like to have one, too! 🙂
Do you realise how many hours it takes to really understand how the characteristics of a digital sensor affects ones pictures?
And why would anyone want to replace one of the best sensors ever made with an unknown sensor, when nothing really has happened in sensor development since that sensor arrived. One really has to be a total slave to the “newer is better” meme, that the industry has tried its best to put in our heads gor decades.
Seriously? Nothing has happened? Recommend you check out what Sony has been up to.
I really need his shit, it must be good.
Or Samsung! Or Canon with duel pixel! Many new technologies since the xpro1. The 16MP sensor is great. But the 24mp sensor in the A6000 is better.
I’d rather have that then the same ol stuff!
Seriously yes, more pixels with not much usefull else has happened. I cant see much but gimmics and minor improvements since nikon D800 sony sensor.
Have a look here if you need hard data:
http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm
One for me too 😉
My 2¢, it is the proper marketing decision. Fuji needed to separate the X-E line from the X-Pro & X-T line in a more definitive way. I was slammed in earlier comments on a different thread for mentioning my guess for the new X-E with 16MP, with a new processor. My view is that this will happen and is the right thing to do for Fuji. It is still a fabulous camera. I use my X-E2 as much as my X-T1.
I’ll probably be branded “Fuji Fanboy” but I too am glad that there is still a current 16mp sensor. May be time for me to retire my X-E1 and consider this X-E2s; I’ll wait for the official specs but that is definitely an option
Fanboy!
Rico, you are on fire! You are seriously pissed about this!
I am seriously amused about this.
🙂
So the best result is, just like X-T1 and X-T1 Graphite Silver. X-T1 GS was released with a newer firmware, and then X-T1 got the firmware, too.
So, hope for the best…
This doesn’t make any sense. So basically nothing major has changed in 2,5-3years? The X-E2 to start with was more of a pimped X-E1 with some faster AF, faster processor and revised version of the same sensor. Now it would have made sense to call the X-E2 the X-E1s ! And now they are pimping the more or less same camera again ? I’m sorry but that’s just not right. I love my X-E2 to bits and I think it was only just worth the upgrade from the X-E1. But now ? Honestly, who’s gonna care for this camera? The strong selling point for the X-E line is that it is a cheaper, rangefinder styled camera, with the same IQ and basic hardware as the more expensive X-pro line. I can’ t believe they’re doing this.
Is the xe2s just a way of marketing a firmware update i.e. Do all xe2 owns get to upgrade to xe2s specs for free and new consumers will buy the xe2s at a new low price point?
I have a feeling that Patrick will jump in at any moment and shout: YOU HAVE BEEN PUNKED, this was just a “ christmas fool´´ 🙂
I have a strong feeling that the XE-2 firmware update is going to be extremely dumbed down version of what the XT-10 has even though the innards are the exact same.
I’m glad to hear fuji is doing exactly what they said they wouldn’t do.
They will throw a new processor in it and give it the exact XT-10 firmware and call it a day.
XE-2 owners are about to get screwed.
I’m really glad I held off on buying the XE-2. From the looks of it I will no longer be buying an XE camera any longer. They are no better then the XA and XM models. I have a strong feeling the XT-10 owners will be getting the same treatment.
@Patrick, I think the XE-2 update is the XE-2’s.
That’s right, you’re about to get screwed.
In fact, in Tokyo right now, Mr. Fuji-san is saying to himself, “Let’s screw Ryan!”
I don’t own a XE-2, I have an XE-1
My gosh! The diapers that need changing over here! Calm down… For all we know, the XE2’s could have a swivel screen and the same EVF as the XT1. Hopefully even touch based. We don’t know what’ll have. We do know it’s coming, so let’s wait..
I can’t wait to upgrade from my X-E2!
It like windows 10! It’s not a new system it’s a service!
Think to start selling S stickers in ebay!
i would buy one 🙂
I know Patrick keeps reassuring us that FW 4.0 for the X-E2 is coming. But the fact the X-E2S and FW 4.0 are supposedly being released mid-January and that the X-E2S is only a minor update, again leads me to think that FW 4.0 is actually the X-E2S, so current X-E2 owners are screwed…if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck its a duck! I still hope I’m wrong though.
That would go against everything Fuji has said and done since the dawn of the X series. I highly doubt you’re right
The XE2s goes against everything fuji has said!!
Sorry, you’ve lost me there; What exactly did they say /regarding the XE line/ ?
They the wouldn’t release cameras with just FW updates like other brands and would keep our cameras relevant with FW updates. instead of new cameras. The whole reasoning for kraizen….
The whole reason why many customers bought into the Fuji system. They bought into it thinking there cameras would be kept relevant.
Point taken on the release new cams with just FW updates; So I believe there are a couple of (probably minor) hardware updates too. As for the pure Kaizen part (ie keeping current models current via fw updates) Fuji has repeatedly said that a big FW update was coming for the X-E2. To me it just shows that they are not ready for a X-E line new product pr may be have not decided yet on it’s exact future
Let’s cut to the chase: Will it have a VIEW MODE button?
[ ] yes
[ ] no
[ ] maybe
[ ] reserved for the X-E2S Plus
Please Rico, stop being so negative, you’re making the baby cry and the cows refuse to produce milk anymore
The X-E2S will be a huge step forward, surely as significant as the ground-breaking transition from X-A1 to X-A2 or XQ1 to XQ2. And probably equally successful. 🙂
ahhh that’s much better, thanks; Now back to the talks with the cows to discuss how they can resume producing milk 😉
???
XE-2s plus. Duh!
They just forgot to mention that the FW upgrade comes with a mandatory HW upgrade
???
They already did that with the X-A2 and XQ2.
Yes, what you wrote here is exactly why I bought into the Fuji system! I’ve already been disappointed by the X-A2 and X-Q2, now it seems the same thing might be happening with the X-E2 series as well…Fuji gained a significant amount of their user base by being different than other brands with things like Kaizen etc…but with those two models I just mentioned and maybe the X-E2S too, they’re behaving just like everybody else.
i hope your wrong about this rumor. if that is true fuji will lose many customers. fuji will have the best looking cameras but on the feature and sensor side they will compete with some entry lvl sony/nikon/canon camera for a few hundret dollars…
My best guess is that the X-E2s will come with all the latest firmware update and priced similar to the X-T10, maybe even come bundled with the XC16-50 and/or XF18-55mm lenses. Then the X-E2 will get the firmware to bring it up to date and not much more.
I don’t see why everyone is losing their mind over this as to me it seems nothing more then just a simple product refresh to bring it back into market.
Exactly right, IMHO
I agree. If it was named X-E3 then I would agree with all the negativity but it’s only a small revamp so we seem to be getting exactly that.
i just hope they keep the same mp in fuji line up. as its super ease of saving and uploading time. i make 11×17 prints for my gallery and people love it.
Same here. I’ve made a number of mid-to-large prints out of my X100T and X-Pro 1 and have loved the detail and quality.
Is it too hard for everyone to think that this rumor is possibly dead wrong or Fuji might be updating a great little lower price point of the pro styling camera as a new camera for new Fuji customers called the XE-2s which is what the X-10 is to the X-1. As for the old XE-2 well I’ll go out on a limb and say the firmware will update the XE-2 to match the “new” XE-2s. Both make a lot of sense to me.
Seeing what the Fuji is doing with all cameras for the past 2-3 years I’m not expecting any revolution from the new x-pro2. Probably some rehashed 2-3 year old sensor. I will actually be shocked if it is anything better than a6000’s sensor. They will use this cheap sensor from a $399 camera and sell it as x-pro2 for $1800. And people will be eager to give Fuji their money on the overpriced product.
Note to self: add “S” to old book titles and double the price.
Absolutely! The re-tag is basically a thread bump. I look forward to your S releases 😉
Will do, thanks.
Your Rico S Plus Mk II.
welcome to the party….most of us fujistas has been “drunk commenting´´ for a while now, trying to figure out what is wrong with Fuji ( are they trying to compete with NEX6? as far as i know that brand name does not exist anymore)
u mad?
U trolling?
I think he was refering to your post; quite rightly so
I think he is the mad one as only people with serious mental issues go around forums creating usernames such as his in order to post stupid “umad?” comments.
And no I am not mad I could care less what people are willing to spend for overpriced products. I won’t.
Bought a Sony yet?
I have no interest in sony.
Whose gear are you promoting? If I were to heed your warning about overpriced products, who are you selling instead?
Have I promoted any other brand here? Do I have to be promoting someone else If I’m giving a negative comment on the fuji’s actions? Think about it a bit longer.
Yes I think you do. Trash talking without offering a better alternative is pointless.
Delusions are quite common around here.
Trash talk AND ad hominem insults? Your contributions know no bounds.
It’s not an ad hominem if the description is correct. You are delusional.
I claimed that trash talk without an alternative was pointless. You called me delusional rather than argue against. That, sir, is the definition of ad hominem.
You need to go read about ad hominem fallacy as you clearly don’t understand when something is an ad hominem and when it isn’t.
Have you even made an argument or are you just trolling around cause someone pointed out the obvious about your favorite company.
Still waiting for a better alternative…
Well the story so far is that you are telling me that Fuji is overpriced, but can’t commit to any alternatives, and me asking for one is delusional. Have I got that right?
Glad to hear that there are still plenty of uneducated consumers willing to buy overpriced products. It will do wonders to economy.
I asked for an alternative which you haven’t provided, and have claimed as unnecessary in this discourse.
And we have no interest in what you’re not interested in.
A little butthurt that someone post a negative comment about your favorite company ?
Yawn. Wake me when you have something useful to say.
And why are you so obsessed with butts, anyway? Actually, never mind. Tell your shrink, not me.
“… I could care less …”
So you do care.
Couldn’t care less.
I was of the opinion that you were?
Well, then get ready to be shocked, because it’s not a rehashed 2-3 year-old sensor. When it debuts, it will be the most advanced 24mp APS-C sensor released to-date.
Or so I hear. 😉
I highly doubt so. And who supposedly manufactured it?
Supposedly, Sony.
But hey, doubt away.
So tell me what sensor so you think Sony will share with Fuji if not their a6000 sensor
A brand new 24mp APS-C sensor that hasn’t been used by anyone before. In fact, I’ll bet money it isn’t the one in the A6000.
Here is my prediction on the X-E2s:
– New 16mp sensor with improved low light capability
– Various improvements to AF
– Possible improvement to dynamic range
– Added view mode button
– Added tilting LCD display
Current X-E2 owners will get the AF firmware upgrade in January
Tilting touch screen? Yes please
I like your list, but any idea how extra low light would be achieved with the same sensor? Are they holding back on the current one?
I have a bit of gaffer’s tape over the ‘X-E2’ on the front panel. When I update the firmware in mid-January, do I then need to update the gaffer’s tape, too?
The crazy part in this is this ‘update’ will probably be of more benefit than we first think. It may keep the X-E2’s price from eroding too significantly in the light of the X-T10, and if so it will hopefully justify the development of an X-E3.
Absolutely. It’s a marketing move to justify the ongoing relevance of the camera, hopefully bumps the sales numbers, and yes hopefully funds the development of XE-3 when the time comes.
I really have LMFAO the whole way through this…. Isn’t anybody going to bitch about an X100S FW update? Seems missing somehow? (The bitching not the FW)
take out the argument of x100s not being the top in the line product
Top of the line fixed lens camera, generally the first camera to get the new stuff and also the first ever X camera, no?
s first ever?
My take-away from the X-pro2 and X-E2s rumors is Fuji is just making incremental upgrades. I am reevaluating my full move to Fuji. Every camera has things that you have to work around, I will mainly just keep using what I have and move on…maybe the X-T2 will move more towards what I want, but the X-T2 won’t really even be out until fall 2016…so lots of time to keep using what I have.
remember the amazing Kaizen and X100s updates…
http://www.quickmeme.com/img/1c/1c96ccf55226534971186d9f7b7ec718f6220b1e32e87588186d22dc1ff89268.jpg
Originally this meme was about butthurt, not hate.
Pointless complaints. They never promised high-MP cameras. In all interviews they actually said they believe 16MP is the right balance for cropped sensor. One may disagree with them, but that’s what they think. X-E[whatever] won’t make one’s pictures any better anyway. First generation X-E1/Pro1/100 still takes pictures good enough to get one onto the MoMA walls, given talent and skills and brain is there. There’re a lot more important things to improve besides fruitless camera upgrades.
True, but not the issue. Cameras are inexorably linked to modern consumer electronics product life cycles and product ‘improvements’. New trumps old, bigger (or smaller) trumps big (or small). Whether there is any improvement to be had in moving from 16MP to 24MP it has to be done, because the market is dominated by people governed by a “it goes one louder” mindset.
It’s not the issue here because the X-E2S appears to be a necessary, but on the surface pointless, badge engineering exercise to keep the X-E line in the public eye. The changes to the camera are suggested to be largely firmware related, and that firmware is coming as an update to the X-E2 in mid-January. This might seem like a cynical spot of badge-engineering on the part of Fuji, but given the current life span from ‘Wow! New toy alert!’ to ‘what have you for me lately?’ is about ten months, it’s understandable. Whether it will be received as such by the market remains to be seen.
The good news is by the sound of this, January’s FW update for the X-E2 might just be more than just trying to keep up with the X-T1.
Sony’s new 42mp sensor in the A7rII has changed from aluminum transfer circuitry to copper. Copper is 40% more conductive than aluminum, which means the new sensor generates less heat, and offers better high ISO noise performance. It also increase circuit speeds and reduces power consumption.
Sony stated the effect of BSI on a 42mp FF sensor is small, but by changing aluminum to copper, the new 42mp sensor has better high ISO performance than their previous 36mp sensor.
I’ll bet money that the X-Pro 2 uses a brand-new, bespoke, Sony 24mp sensor with copper transfer circuitry. I thus expect both a bump in resolution along with a bump in both high ISO and DR.
Clairvoyance always gets the heart racing! I do hope your right, though. A sensor that’s sharper than my lenses would surely dissolve all insecurities I have about my art
technology trumps art yet again!
time to start looking at other brands, I fear….
Really? Why?
Fuji releases a half-step camera ‘upgrade’ to keep a product line in the public domain. The same technique has worked well for Nikon in cameras like the D70 to D70s, and the update didn’t undermine sales of the D40 in the time while waiting for the D80.
The only difference is X-E2 users will get the bulk (possibly all) the X-E2S upgrades through FW. And it may mean there is still a little more to squeeze out of the X-E2/2S body before the X-E3 replacement arrives (probably in 2017).
Olympus Stylus 1s
Panasonic GH4R
Nikon D610
there are many examples of cameras, that are just firmwareupdates (or the updates are neglectable)
so good luck with your new brand 😉
So where is the Nikon D620, D630 and D640 then?
It would be interesting to know the price of this camera.
This is excellent marketing. Olympus almost went out of business in the film days because, even though they had an excellent camera, they never updated it. So it never got a new camera article in the magazines. Sales of other brands that made very minor changes on an annual basis got reviewed and people bought them. So if a customer look at a review of an E2 and an E2s it will be a very different beast.
Any chance it’ll have more firmware space so they can throw in even more film simulations? Or maybe more memory so it can take more photos in burst mode before it falls over?
I was hoping for atleast 1/8000 shutter and tilt and touch screen 🙁
we don’t know it yet! 😀
as much as I was scratching my head over this initially, it might be a reasonable move in the medium term: XE2 will be de-listed and current users made happy with a FW upgrade. The XE2s will be priced lower and take the space of the XA and XM which might fade out or merge into a single low end camera.
A processor upgrade (but same sensor) will allow the new entry point to have most features of the new XP2 and XT2 without the high end specs and therefore leave enough points of differentiation.
Fuji obviously wants us XE2 users not to buy an XE2s but to upgrade.
An XE3 as in XP2 without OVF will therefore not come before much later…
If the rumor is true, welcome to the new Fuji reverse Kaizen philosophy. If you want a new firmware on your old camera, buy that old camera again at full sticker price, and you will get the firmware improvements…
16 or 24MP doesnt matter. the point is people want progress. if fuji user invest in fuji glass they want a body that keeps up with current tech. it doenst have to be every 6 monts 2 news body like sony does. but every 2-3 years a a new sensor with either improved mp / iso noise / dr would be nice. almost every other manufactured made some major improvements to their cameras over that last 3 years. so now is not the time for some incremental updates. if the x-e2s keeps 16MP and its the same 3 year old sensor and not some new nice lowlight or fast af (sony a6000 af) people will get mad. because sony, oly, pana, samsung, nikon they all have way better sensors either with better af or better lowlight, better dr and and and….. retro design is awesome, colour profiles are awesome and i realy like using fuji cameras, but common fuji….
Well said, Johnny
Unless they managed to drastically improve the AF performance in low-light. In that case (and in that case only) I would very welcome a new camera with the old sensor.
I agree with you completely…..Fuji has been using the same sensor with some increment from the start of the ILC line, Most of us were willing to put up with it because there are other advantages to the system. But after 4 years, people want a new sensor with all the goodies that comes with it. It is not only about the MP bump, we need fast AF, more DR, better convertable files…after all the fuji system is a high end product with a price to match that claim.
agree
From kaizen to harakiri. I like that.
LOL…that’s funny.
I think the changes in camera technology is rapidly slowing down. And the demand is also slowing down…I am an example of this…I am sure the X-pro2 and X-E2s will be fine cameras but I already have a fine camera and lenses…the rumors for the X-Pro2 and X-E2s are doing nothing for me, I see nothing here that makes me want to spend the money.
I agree : my spending plan is New lenses – probably – Body – unlikely unless the X-E2s brings enough to refresh my X-E1 otherwise pass this round
I changes to fuji a year ago, no plans to change. Still with the X-T1 and X-E1. Waiting for X-T2… though 🙂
I don’t really care about mega pixels 16 is plenty for me! Fuji, just keeping working away at increased autofocus speed and accuracy and maybe a little in the way of dynamic range and that is all I need!
I really don’t most people are complaining about the 16mp but rather about the “same” old sensor inside a 2016 camera!
I hope there will be two new X-E cameras. X-E2s with smaller(older?) sensor, updatet processor, faster autofocus, lover price (like X-T10 vs X-T1) and new X-E3, more expensive, but not as expensive as X-PRO2. I’m guessing:
X-E2s = 750€
X-E3 = 1150€
X-Pro2 = 1500€
Sounds good to me except it if could be cheaper than what you say at least for the s version.
Interesting concept! I’d be guessing a bit of a delay on any X-E3 though so the X-Pro2 can get its time in the sun.
If Fuji were smart they would release the X Pro2, XT-2 and XE2s or XE3 on the same day. This would give consumers a choice which is always a good thing for sales and would avoid people waiting for the next best greatest camera.
That could work for them, but would be a very different approach to the current firmware update driven approach. So keep releasing new bodies instead of firmware. On the other hand, alternating XT/XPro releases might work for their market segmentation, and provide an affordable approach for development cycles, giving each group something to look forward to.
I think that is what is coming. But I wouldn’t expect the X-E3 in (early) 2016. The X-E2s would push it back into 2017.
I don’t mind peopla asking for progress. There should be progress in new products. What fuji has done with the whole x system has been progress, but not by delivering the best af, the most usable raw files for LR nor the most Mp or highest spec scores. They rather identified that the mirrorless market needed usable cameras built for photographers and had the ambition to build a camera and not a toy. They also noticed that the general digital imaging market needed lenses that was sharp without ruining the pictures with ugly hard micro contrast and a step away from the non-photographic look of the bayer filter.
Expect fuji to furter explore how to make digital images more photo-like and to make digital cameras more camera-like. They will ofcourse follow new improvements in sensor tech, af and so on if it is proven in line with their goals. With AF, for example, mirrorless cameras still have some catching up to do. The sensor war, however, is essentially over for everyone but the marketing departments and spec lovers. Have a look at this diagram. The ideal-dx curve more or less shows how much information the light that reaches an aps-c sized sensor/film holds. See how close the x-e2 is and brows around a few years older cameras and find out when real DR and high iso performance improvement essentially stopped. Dont expect fuji to improve much in that department without groundbreaking improvements in the understanding of how the universe works by quantum physicists and alike.
And FFS stop whining about that you want the bloody a6000 sensor and start worrying that the 24 Mp sensor in the xpro2 might not be as good as the old 16Mp one instead.

Great points…
Ahahaha nice try justifying your overpriced hipster gear
Oh, dont get me started on my hipster cameras, you would never hear the end of it. They look like this:
I would use one of these in a heartbeat, if I didn’t have to grow a beard too.
So, all those people buying Sony, Nikon and Canon are not photographers?
Ofcourse they are not. And remember, when you and i buy a bag from Thinktank or a lens from Sigma we stop being photographers that very moment!
WTF are you talking about?
It’s called irony
No!! It’s called, stupidity!
The whole mirror effort thing finally get fuji and sony close to the performance of dslr. It seems they did a lot of work but Canikon was there in the beginning. The same work was done for them.
I really hope these 2 companies stop playing marketing tricks and settle down a bit with more efforts put into making better game changing products.
Canon and Nikon are a great example of how little the sensor performance actually matter today.
Nikon used top nodge sony sensors of the same (exmore) genaration that fuji and sony still use. In their aps-c line, they have actually been able to switch to cheaper sensors (that are almost as good) in their later models. With slightly better in camera image processing they still try to tell the world every generation is better.
Canon stepped out of the DR on low iso competition quite a few years ago but has kept up in the high iso end. They are now quite a few years after sony and others. Even so, their market share has developed very much like Nikons.
When, eventually fuji decides to quit the 16Mp sensor, it will probably not be because they have found a much better one (once again, have a look at data, how much room for improvement is there), but for a cheaper one with the same or almost as good performance. They will ofcourse market it as improvement just as Nikon and Canon do every time, but when we look at the pictures taken or work with the images we will notice hardly any change and when Bill Claff and others do the maths the difference will be as small as it has been the last couple of years.
I don’t see any point in the “s” unless they’ve reached the end of a production run with the original X-E2 and simply want to re-manufacture it with the latest firmware. There will have to be at least one or two cosmetic changes I guess. So my upgrade to X-E1 options are increasingly looking like X-Pro2, X-T2 or X-T1. I want silver/graphite this time round as well and if the Pro doesn’t offer that option, it may be enough to all but rule it out! No significant sensor improvements and I may simply settle for the gorgeous graphite X-T1 when the price has fallen a bit further.
700$ Firmware Update
Is Fuji making seppuku ??? A7000 from Sony with 28MP BIS, better DR, better AF, and probably much cheaper than X-Pro2 will eat it together with X-E2s. Who will pay 700-800$ for X-E2s with old sensor and tech and 1800$ for X-Pro2 with old A6000 sensor and minor improvements (including no tilt LCD) after 4 years of waiting? Do not you think these cams will go down in value very fast?
I love the APS-C E-Mount lenses. Last one was in 2013 wasn’t it?
Love how you masturbate to a sensor, when it comes with the crappiest lenses at the moment 😉
bla, bla, bla… umad, keep masturbating to a Fuji what you do best.
Sony lenses are quite bad, and also the QC is pathetic. But there are also a couple of interesting Zeiss lenses for that system. The 12mm, redundant on the X system, is indeed a very interesting lens on the E system. Add the Sigma lenses (not excellent but quite good, small and very cheap), and you already have a system you can use effectively. So it’s really up to Fuji to upp the game with the sensor, which is indeed preatty old.
sure, but let’s be honest: going for the f/2.8 primes (sigmas) isn’t really making good use of an ILC. Or you could get a mFT camera or even an compact and would get similar results.
Jo Fuji, 2011 called, it wants its sensor back 😀
We sold our old stockpile of 2013 24 mp junk to Fuji and they think it’s hot shit ahahaha.
Hehe, the same 16mpix with the same color-detail-destroying color-leaking X-Trans. They don’t want to compete at all. 🙂
Well, maybe it is priced at $300 where it belongs in comparison even with a6000? Right? 😉 No, not Fuji. They will price it at TWICE a6000 to assure that sales will be as low as possible. Mark my words. Probably Sony spy works at Fuji to assure that. 😉
News flash ~ all Bayer and Bayer-like sensors are colour/resolution leaking. That is why the DP Merrils have comparable image quality to the A7r/D810 at base ISO (but with better details and micro contrast), even with a 15mp APS-C sized sensor.
If you don’t like Fuji cameras, perhaps you should spend your time more wisely elsewhere. And, if you are getting much better results with your Sony camera(s), please post them here, as I would love to see the groundbreaking results.
And yet Bayer has color problems to much smaller degree compared to X-Trans, not only theoretically, but in practice (clearly visible in comparison of Olympus vs Fuji macro lenses, for example).
2s probably includes the latest-n-greatest processing chip.
I’m truly astonished they have used the same sensor again. I honestly think that’s just not enough of an upgrade.
New photog insider joke: Fuji ahahahaha
Mad props to Fuji for helping us clear inventory of 16 mp junk from 2012
