4K or no 4K? That is the question!
As you might remember, Fujifilm itself (via Sales Manager Makoto Oishi) said back in March here, that current X-TransII cameras cannot deliver 4K video, because “the sensor itself should have much faster reading speed”, but that 4K is definitely something they are working on for future models with new sensor and faster reading speed.
And Fuji indeed worked and is working on it. But, unlike rumored earlier, the 4K technology is apparently not yet ready for the X-Pro2.
In fact, the Top Trusted Japanese source told me that the X-Pro2 will not feature 4K video at its launch, on January 15.
Ok, after reading this rumor I feel…. say it in the comments.

I hope it doesn’t mean that the sensor is behind the competition of other brands..
Hope the sensor is the same as in the nikon d7200 – which has an awesome DR.
I hope they have developed some new sensors and some kind of quicker raw files..
Quicker raw files?
4K would suit X-T2 more but anyway it would be disappointing. I know many don’t care about video at all but many do.
I think most people could do without the 4k if they would at least offer competitive 1080p. The current implementations are like an aliasing and moiré benchmark to show how bad the image can get. That’s actually sad because the out of camera colors are so beautiful that you could easily do without color grading for everyday stuff.
IMHO, Fuji film could make much more money and photographers could have a much better mirrorless system if fuji released all those beautiful lenses for e-mount.
At the moment I have to choose between a great body with mediocre lenses and mediocre body with great lenses.
Honestly, I could care less… I have never taken any video with any of my x-bodies and never plan on it either. In fact, if I could program the red dot button on my X-t1 to some other function I would in a heart beat…
Ok, after reading this rumor I feel….indifferent.
I hope Fuji gets away with any video functionality whatsoever. We take photos.
If you don’t have the extra penny to get a camera with awesome video capabilities (Panasonic GH4 or Samsung NX1, or even a Sony) why bother spending so much cash for an X-Pro2 in the first place?
I don’t want a jack-of-all-trades type of camera. Just get one thing right and be proud of it.
I’m sure Fuji would want the potential buyers of the nx1 or Gh4 to purchase a xpro 2 or an XT2. They need good video to stay relevant.
Like it or not that’s how the market it.
In theory of course. But realistically speaking, buyers of an NX1 or a GH4 represent a different market segment.
Maybe a tiny fraction of overlap, but generally someone who buys a Fuji x camera cares more about picture quality (and related functionality) then video. And Fuji builds cameras that appeal to those people and their needs.
Then, we have a growing number of people coming to Fuji cameras because they heard about them, reading and informing themselves and realize in the process that although Fuji gets picture quality right (quite nice) but kind of suck in many other aspects, like video.
And these prospect customers nagging all day long and complaining what Fuji is not doing right.
Well, yes and no. I understand these complains, hey, I know Fuji needs to stay competitive. No question. But Fuji also lives in that niche market segment and is doing quite well.
Fuji is building a community around retro-style (whether fake or real doesn’t matter) and gets one important thing right: high picture quality in a light-weight package.
That’s it, and that’s why you buy a Fuji. And it should stay that way.
Call it philosophy, or market differentiator, or a credit to limited R&D resources.
I want a camera that gets right what it is supposed to do and forget about the rest.
I hope he said “at launch”
this would imply, that the sensor was “4k ready”
I don’t shoot video, so why do I care? 4K means fast sensor readout (and a strong processor), both of which are also needed for a fast autofocus and a lagless/blackoutless viewfinder
the source wrote me that when the Fuji X-Pro2 will be launched, on Jan. 15, it won’t have 4K. I had no time to investigate further, but will do it soon and let you know
Any word about IBIS?
I just hope it’s not a pointer to a disapointing sensor, anything less than 24mp and I don’t see how it’s going to compete with the full frame Sonys going forward.
as far as I know it will have 24MP
I think that the XPro2 will be a nice camera – but will diappoint a lot o people here. Because they have been waiting for almost 4 years now and their hopes for what they wished for being in this camera and what FUJIFILM will deliver will not match at the same time.
Yup. 2 years ago people were already expecting an organic sensor. So if Fuji delivers a Sony’s a6000 sensor a lot of people will be disappointed. I myself will probably just get a discounted x100t and forget about it.
I fear that if the X-Pro2 is not an enormous step forward for Fujifilm camera’s it and the X-series in general will ultimately go the way of Minolta and Contax.
My phone takes better video than my Xpro1. I don’t even think of using fuji for video. I’ll live without 4K in the xpro2
Fuji cams are built for photography! There is no need for 4k video because of Fuji is focusing on really great photography experience…
That would be fail, even though I don’t use video at all.
Its a market that expects newer cameras have 4K video.
Fujifilm would be lacking behind and that’s a bad thing.
i wouldnt want a jerky unstabilised video with frame drops..
If video that you needed the most, just go with Sony, they excel in that department. Photography is what Fujifilm made for.
No 4K….
I do not care about the video capabilities.
But not having 4K video might also mean a weak and slow AF system and only minor improvements to the FPS as the processor may not be up to its task reading out the sensor fast enough.
After reading this I am less optimistic about the future of the X-system, as people may move on directly to Sony or Nikon if the rumours about a take over from Samsung turn out to be correct.
You think maybe the Xtrans have something to do with this? is so, they really need to let it go or something and fast. I already know several fashion designers that only want video now and I would assume they will take the stills from the there so that to me is a clear indication of where it’s headed.
i think i doubt x-pro2 is able to shoot 6000x4000p video, so you can pick up the full res “stills” from there..
4K is around 2160p
If you want your video to look good, you’ll want to shoot at about a 180 degree shutter most of the time (which at normal frame rates equals about 1/50th of a second in stills terms). That’s way too much motion blur for usage as stills. And if you shoot higher frame rates and fake the motion blur, you tend to get artifacts when dealing with complex subject matters.
Fashion videos and commercials are using a lot of slow motion most of the time, which equals higher frame rates and thus shorter shutter speeds, so it’s not quite as much of a problem, but generally, frame grabbing is not a replacement for dedicated stills. Not to mention that stills have different framing requirements and that poses/motion that works in video doesn’t necessarily translate in still frames.
might be…on the other hand, a sony a6000 does not offer 4k video and has a pretty nice AF system and high burst rate.
fuji has to update the lenses though, i dont feel 35 1.4 and 56 1.2 will focus much faster with an optimised camera. their motors are just sluggish.
Slowish autofocus is just part and parcel of having a lens as fast as the 56 1.2. Go and use Canon’s 50 1.2 or 85 1.2 on a 5D3 (which has a very very good AF system) and you’ll see what I mean. Too much glass to move around in a precise fashion quickly. I’m not saying it CAN’T be done but I’m not aware of it being done.
i do use thoose lenses on a 5D3 professionally, and while the 85 1.2 is slow to move through the whole focus range, it is snappy and quick when locking on subjects that are near the focus plane. the fuji lenses feel somehow “loose” and not as snappy. add the focus hunting (for example in backlight low contrast situations) from the camera and you want to throw the x-t1 and 35 1.4 combination out of the window 😉 there is moch to be done, i hope fuji makes a big step with the x-pro2.
The Panasonic 42.5mm f1.2 isn’t exactly slow. Nor is my 135mm f1.8 or 85mm f1.4, which is both bigger glass to move around than a 50mm f1.2.
We need good news, not bad news 😉
The good news is, it has no 4k. The bad news is, it probably still has video. 🙂
Just get some basic really good video is all. its mainly a stills camera anyhow. But what i would like to see is lighting fast AF, rich microcontrast files.
I fee relieved. I don’t want a video camera. I want great stills. Thanks Fuji for not being willing to compromise still iq for “better specs”.
Yes, because that is usually the case?
I want a good stills camera, does not need to have any video capability at all.
Your in the minority. Most people want a well balanced camera. Fuji wants sales. No 4K would hurt Fuji sales
that means if you want 4K you should wait for Xt-2.
xt2 better have a dual battery slot then
I don’t care too much about video, as I rarely shoot videos. However, this better not be a sign that they settled with an old sensor, as the most important things are that it has improved image quality and better AF in low light.
I am still hopeful that the X-Pro 2 will be what I have been waiting for. That said, my X-Pro 1 is fantastic for stills already.
From the rumors i have read sofar, i am wondering what Fuji was waiting for the last 4 years to upgrade the X-pro 1. This camera was suppose to be Fuji´s next generation camera. But sofar it is more like a x-pro 1s than a next generation camera.
Evolution, not revolution. 🙂
Pretty much my thoughts, but it will be 24MP ZOMG! And this will be hyped to death like it was the second coming.
Give me awesome MF digital RF and I will buy one, proper next gen hybrid VF is the only thing I care about with this camera and the only thing that nothing is being leaked on (so likely to be nothing new).
´´but it will be 24MP ZOMG! And this will be hyped to death like it was the second coming“
I wish them luck with that. Just to put things into perspective. The Sony a6000 is selling for under $ 400 body only now. Maybe they are thinking of adding 4K later with a lot of fanfare as KAISEN…. As far as i am concerned fuji has to up their game on AF, provide a better RAW converter, and up to date video. In 2016 this is not too much to ask from a highend mirrorless camera. Which i assume will cost Ca. 1,800$
Yes, initially the rumours for the X-Pro2 were describing an exciting new addition to the Fujifilm family. But as time has gone by it seems a lot of the good stuff is not going to appear…more compact dimensions, tilt-screen, no 4K and maybe even an older-gen sensor. All rather disappointing, if true.
That would fit Fuji’s strategy of going with what’s actually good vs. what is marketing friendly.
Actual Full HD/2K (not the overly compressed shitty stuff that companies sell us as Full HD these days) is more than suitable for pretty much anything you could possibly want to do today, excessive cropping aside. The argument that people want to shoot 4K to get good 1080p is idiotic – you might as well shoot 1080p that’s actually good instead.
You need a larger than normal movie theater or sit with your nose on a very expensive screen to tell the difference between HD and 4K. Not only that, when it comes to consumers, most of them even have trouble telling the difference between SD and full 1080. Besides, in situations where 4K playback is happening in a way where the additional detail is actually visible (say, IMAX), most top cinematographers routinely use diffusion from Full HD upwards to get the resolution back down again since that much detail is just not very flattering for the human face. Another common technique is to use softer vintage lenses. Otherwise you’d have to start retouching your videos like stills.
If I had to choose a camera for TVC or feature film, the added resolution for 4K would very likely be irrelevant to me when deciding between Alexa, Red, or other systems. But if that readout bandwidth on a camera needed for 4K was dedicated to 120 fps instead for example, or ProRes or even raw recording like the Blackmagic cameras have proven feasible in small form factors several years ago, that would actually be a pretty compelling argument, alongside the fantastic X series lenses (if they found a good way to do focus pulling, like an iPhone remote app that controls focus electronically via Bluetooth).
Sooooo we only need 2MP for massive prints then?
I’m not sure what your point is. If your intention is to make massive prints from video, motion blur from the 180 degree shutter is going to be an issue.
If you are referring to stills, however, implying that videos are or will be consumed like high resolution still photo gallery prints, that’s not how it works in reality since people just don’t stand inches away from a cinema screen.
Even with still photos, you have a lot more leeway with resolution in large formats than companies selling 60 megapixel backs would like to admit. Unless you make gallery prints that people will be scrutinizing from up close, you don’t need that much resolution really. A client of mine recently ran a 5 megapixel crop of an image of mine blown up to DIN A1 in a poster campaign and I was surprised to see that it looked really good, even from up close.
I have to disagree with you there. I’ve seen FullHD content and 4K (UHD) content on both my laptop and big screen TV. And the difference is palpable! Once you watch genuine 4K video there’s no going back, 1080p looks blurred by comparison!
Your laptop very likely doesn’t even have a 4K screen, so if you looked at 4K material and it looked better scaled down than 1080p material, likely the 1080 footage was not true 1080. Unless you have really significantly larger than 1080p resolution on your laptop, which would fall into the high res screen at close distance category that I can’t see being the norm.
But the problem remains whether you agree about my assessment of 4K usefulness or not. 4K on consumer cameras isn’t actually true 4K, so even if the X-Pro 2 had nominal 4K like some of the other cameras out there, it would still be about the same quality as true 1080p. Just like consumer HD camcorders and the first DSLRs like the 5D MK II gave you roughly the equivalent of good SD.
My laptop has a higher than 1440p equivalent res, quite a lot more than 1080p then at over 4MP, and the difference is noticeable even at that 2k res! Also I think the APS-C (which is the size Fujifilm camera’s use) sensors in the latest DSLRs and ILMs are capable of resolving true 4K res, if maybe not the full colour gamut yet. I think its a useful feature, but we’ll see…Jan 15th.
No 4K? Who cares?!?! Want my Fuji for good quality still shots!!!
A lot of people that are potential buyers of Fuji cameras care.
Echoing other people’s comments, I could care less about video, let alone 4K video. If you give me 1080 that doesn’t suck, I’ll be happy.
I’m more concerned about stills photography image quality and support for RAW formats in photo apps like Photoshop and ACDsee. I don’t want to wait three years after release to be able to get decent RAW conversions!
So maybe new firmware for the X-E2 is also not far away?
If I cared about video, I’d buy a Sony. In fact, that’s why my companion camera is an RX100 IV. It really does a fantastic job of filling in gaps like these with the Fuji offering and takes up so very little space in the bag.
Perhaps Fuji doesn’t want you to think like that.
The problem with no 4K is what is says about the sensor. Not a recent one that reads quickly. There is still going to be motion artifacts with electronic shutter. It will have fewer autofocus points than the competition. Focus will lag the competition. It is not just video.
Not necessarily. It just means, that Fuji still hasn’t worked out the X-Trans problems with videos – if it doesn’t work in FullHD, why bother with advertising 4K? At least I hope that’s what this means…
Yes I agree, looks like Fuji is using the Sony A6000 sensor then. Why is it taking soooo long Funi…
I really hope not! That’ll make the camera obsolete on arrival! Remember Fujifilm doesn’t have the huge R&D budget the other major manufactures have. This sensor is going to have to last them for many years. It has to be a state of the art sensor or Fujifilm cameras will fall behind quickly! If that is what their launching in the X-Pro2 I’ll be very disappointed.
Fuji would never use the A6000 sensor. The X-T10 already outperforms the A6000 sensor by a good margin.
Did your source indicate whether 4K will be possible on the sensor at a future date? (i.e., readout will be high enough; it’s just the demosaicing that they haven’t worked out yet)
The Sony sensor it is likely using is capable of 4K readout.
Video? Meh. The video button on my XT-10 is programmed to bring up the flash options.
Well if the camera is otherwise excellent and has improved 1080 video capabilities it won’t matter. Not a top priority for me at least.
Who cares about Video on a Fuji X camera. If you want to shoot video get a Sony A7SII or a Panasonic mFT camera.
You don’t think Fuji would want some of those sales?
They probably will, but let me clarify my comment.
I could not care less about 4k Video. I am a photographer and I want a photographers tool. If it where for me they could even leave the video out completely. Just like on the Nikon DF.
I couldn’t care less. But I’d like to see a 4K EVF for sure 😉
They’re not even at 720p evfs yet!
Sony makes them (but doesn’t use them in cameras). And technically most in common use are 768p but with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
dots, not pixels.
No. 2.4mil dots corresponds to 1024 x 768 pixels or 0.8mil RGB pixels.
yes
So what would you think would be the correct specification for the 2.36 MPixel EVFs currrently employed in the Fuji X-Cameras?
I don’t know the aspect ratio, but it should roughly equal something like 1800 x 1350 pixel to match this resolution. So jumping from this to 4K (considering that we’ll talk about 3840 × X or something alike) is “only” twice the resolution in each direction and the same like going form full HD to 4K.
The Leica Q features a 3.68 MPixel EVF which would roughly be 2200 x 1650 pixel. And Leica hasn’t been famous for their EVFs in the past, so I think it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that Fuji might come up with something better. Probably not 4K yet, but one can dream 😉
DOTS not Pixels.
1 Pixel = 3 Dots (R+G+B)
1024 x 768 x 3 = 2.36M
Exactly! Its a common mistake by many people to mix the two up. A 2.36M EVF is actually XGA resolution…that’s only 786,432 individual pixels.
Wow, I didn’t know that. Now wonder that I’ve always felt that the X-T1 magnification is a bit too strong for the actual resolution of the EVF, being able to very well see it’s grid structure. So there’s still a long way to go then and I back down from the 4K. But I estimate that multiplying by 2 in both directions and getting a 2048 x 1536 resolution would result in an EVF being able to convince quite a number of people that the OVF is not all that necessary any more (given that the refresh rate is also up to speed).
2.36 million *dots* you have to divide that by 3 to get the effective number of pixels.
Seems like current and future X-PRO users are quite dedicated to photography and stills, not caring so much about video capabilities. Great!
I don’t care much about video, but it seems like it’s not the best use of their development time and money to ship subpar video and then kaizen with better quality. I’d rather they got more things right on the first try. Maybe they totally nailed their 1080p this time, it’d be nice to know i have the option of half-decent video if someone asks for it, and panasonic’s success in the space shows you don’t actually have to do much to gain a cult following.
X-T2 is rumored for the middle-end of the summer, isn’t it? I’m guessing it’ll come with 4k and there’ll be a kaizen for x-pro around the same time.
Proper 4K video is very important for me in my next camera body. I want to be able to take stills and 4K video with the same camera body, and be able to quickly switch between stills and video.
The irony is last night I read the dpreview review of the Sony A7R2. I have specifically stayed away from Sony, but after reading the review I said to my brother, that I was going to study the Sony A7R2 and see how it would work into my photography. I am not in a hurry, I plan on waiting to see what the Canon 5D4 and Fuji X-T2 offer, but now I will add Sony.
Fine by me, not sure why you would use something like this to shoot 4k anyway. Surely it would be a nice bonus but I’d rather have no video in a xpro2 personally.
Fuji to release a camera like the Leica M262, sans video? What would be fine with me. I only make video snapshots and tend to do with my iPod Touch. Love my X100T but if the video mode in that camera is any indication of what the Xtrans sensor can do, skip it. Get a camera meant for video.
Are we finally seeing a bifurcation the camera market, those meant to excel for photos and cameras meant for video? Or will Fuji put a crappy video mode on the X-Pro 2 like on the X00T because they think they have to?
I only used the video by accident 😀
What does it matter!
X-Pro2 will be a FILM camera and will support Super8 for video
At least it will FEEL like it. 😉
Well, now I’m even more glad I bought my iPhone 6S Plus!
4K video was one of the selling points over buying the non-S model.
Believe it or not people. 4K is here. People want 4K video. People want a 4K photo mode. Fuji wants new people to adopt Fuji as their new mirrorless camera. But new people want 4K. No 4K equals less people buying Fuji cameras. Less people buying Fuji cameras due to no 4K means less sales for Fuji. Less sales for Fuji means less R&D money they have to put into X cameras.
Alot of people here may not care. You likely already have a Fuji camera.
I don’t really care much about 4K . But I’d like a 4K photo mode.
What do you mean by 4K photo mode? The camera already takes photos at dimensions larger than 4K: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution#Resolutions
Not at 30 fps
“What do you mean by 4K photo mode?”
As Panasonic does. 24. 25 or 30 fps with electronic shutter and working focusing, with full-sensor readout (within the video area – meaning no line or pixel skipping). Much more compact representation than even JPEG would allow, and for indefinite time, not limited by a buffer.
For example, you can photo(video)graph the whole dance, or the whole gymnastics floor or bar routine, without knowing in advance when the best moments are going to present themselves – and then extract these best moments, with very fine 1/24-1/30s time resolution (meaning a jump in its highest point, a ball on a player’s foot or on a rocket etc etc – things simply impossible with lower speeds other than by luck, no matter your skills).
Basically it is the case when you spray but don’t have to pray – your best shot is guaranteed to be in there.
Panasonic lacks OSPDAF though, and DFD only works with a handful of lenses and not as well as the best OSPDAF anyway.
Thank you. Nice answer.
Basically what I said 😉
And I would like a healthy digital camera department in Fujiland.
Here we go – get ready for the list of year-old standard features that don’t appear in X-Pro2, and as expected, get ready for the “That’s OK, I don’t need that feature anyway” said by different 20% of the loud users per feature.
4K?, Tilt Screen? Touch Screen? Quick Focus? native ISO? Geo Tagging? WIFI? up-to-date flash system? “Real photographers don’t need those, in my days we took photos with a yogurt containers and the IQ was just fine”
I really appreciate Fuji for gathering this crowd behind them, real people who care less about features, usability, performance and IQ and more about that special magical fuzzy feel when pressing the shutter button.
Personally, it saddens me to hear that Fuji is way behind the market with sensor readout speeds, as slow sensor readouts have other implications besides lack of 4K. (Slower focusing is one, Rolling shutter effect is another)
It’s getting clearer by the minute that X-Pro2 is not the camera Fuji would have wanted to put out for their users, but I guess that after 4 years they had to release something.
The gap between Fuji and it’s competitors is one that Fuji does not intend to close.
I hope that Fuji’s management has a better answer to their audience than the one provided here by Fuji fanboys (“What are you doing here then?, if that what you think, you should head to Sony rumors site”),
as I know quite a bit of former Fuji fanboys reading competitor’s rumors nowadays.
I agree.
Hope this is just a rumor.
Is that you George in another name?
Based on the users comments, I think you have it the other way around, only Ryan has been loud about 4k, then he drops a comment about 4k in photo mode. All his credibility went down the drain in that instance. Unless you have empirical evidence to support your 20% claim, then you are just speculating.
There is an Asian saying… “If you want a dog, buy a dog. Dont get a cat and it scold why it is not a dog”. Im sure you understand this perfectly.
What’s wrong with 4K photo mode? I’ve seen really good results from it. It’s something I’d utilize to capture a moment. It’s just shooting 4K at a higher shutter speed and pulling the pic. 8mp at 30fps.
Well, It is indicating a few things. First, there’s a big chance that you’re a hobbyist not a pro photographer. Two, if you are a pro then you are more of a videographer or one that is a spray and kind of shooter. Both of which the x pro is not intended for. If you go back to the first x100, fujis intention is clearly stated. It is camera for photographers and it is about going back to the basics of capturing the moment.
I am a hobbyist. I doubt there are very many people on here, that there sole income comes from photograghy (a pro photographer). When taking photos of my pup. It is spray and pray most of the time. Sometimes I can time it well lure coarsing. I’ve been shooting for 15 years. I’ve had many paid jobs during that time. Just enough to supply my hobby with what I want.
I’m guessing your a pro with your sole income being photograghy(which if the definition of being a “pro photographer”)?
By what you’re saying, I’ll save you the trouble… BUY a Dslr. By it’s essence a rangefinder or in this case, rangfinderresque camera is not ideal for video.
The GX8 seems to do video just fine. Why would I buy a DSLR? I sold my 7D and bought a XE-1 because it suits me better. Me asking for one feature doesn’t mean I should buy a DSLR(no DSLR’s currently shoots 4K btw, horrible advice). I’m interested in buying the Xpro2 I hope they include the feature. If they don’t then I will probably buy the XE-2 if it gets updated to 4.0 and wait for the XE-3.
I bought into Fuji for its lenses. Strictly for lenses. They suit my needs. I enjoy the manual controls. But above all else. Lenses. They could go out of business right now and I would have everything I need covered(once the 100-400 comes out).
I would like a 4K photo mode. Nothing wrong with it. It suits my shooting currently. It’s nothing but a tool. I also want 1/8000 SS, is that blasphemy?
Its not blasphemy but specific to x pro series and the real intended user, video is more of a fringe benefit than a necessity.

Dear Ryu,
Sorry for not basing my numbers on the comments for this item in this forum.
I do base my opinions on the way the market works and not just the Photography market and on competitors sales figures compared to Fuji’s.
The way things work is that there is a limit to marketing claims about innovation when you’re 2-3 years behind the market.
When I wrote that 20% are happy with Fuji’s features and offering, I really felt I was excessively generous, The sad truth is that Fuji-X customers are probably 2-10% of the mirror-less market. The rest are just ignorant people interested in meaningless features and competitive pricing.
Non pros which choose Nikon, Canon and Sony solely because of their ignorance.
Well, the “if you want a dog…” comment was expected as I wrote down in my comment.
Just one thing- when tomorrow or two days from now, when Patric posts about a missing feature X that you might care about, please don’t comment on it in here not to be renounced as traitor, remember – if you want a dog buy a dog.
Dont worry about that, Im not a person to whine I make my decision based on what it can do. If it does not fit my needs, I move on. Simple concept and minimal frustration.
Problem here is, probably you are in this category- you want a fuji but what you actually need is a Dslr, but in your insistence you would rather complain why fuji is not doing it instead of just using the dslr. Now, Doesnt this make the saying make more sense now.
As Ive said below, revisit the purpose why Fuji created the x series and it will save you a lot of frustration. Know the intent and use it as it was created. Dont scold the cat!
You’re a more complete person than I am then, I get frustrated 🙂
Yep, your saying makes more sense now, sorry for criticizing it before.
you are correct by-the-way, I do own a DSLR but I wish I could switch to Fuji since I really love the rangefinder look and the small form factor.
I cannot switch to Fuji yet mainly because of insufficient focus speed and Raw processing issues (I’m a so-so photographer and these improved features will improve my end results).
I can’t switch to Sony yet because of poor lens selection for their APS-C mirror-less line and price of their FF
I can’t switch to MFT yet because the sensor size will impose relative lower IQ (might not be true when organic film comes out).
yep, it gets me frustrated.
*IBIS would be nice too…
You should really go to a store and test the X-T1 with the newest updates installed.
Many other “so-so photographers” do take great pictures of sport events and fast action.
What is the Asian saying for when you want your camera brand to offer a camera body that is feature and resolution competitive?
癡人說夢 crazy man tells you his dream 😉
😀
Tell me if you are really more of a rangefinder user and tell me how does video fit in to those specific users. Ignorants are quick to call something crazy just because they grasp the concept.
Sic* don’t grasp*
Hi, I’m totally a rangefinder low-speed low-needs street & portrait type of guy. Sometimes even the X-Pro1 is too fast for me, then I’d grab the Fuji GW690iii and my external light meter and get my lazy ass up to a nice location and enjoy shooting.
Video? I don’t care.
AF speed? I don’t care either, really. I often use manual lenses anyway. But I got quite a collection of Fuji lenses as well.
Picture quality? Yeah, that’s what I’m in for, and that’s what I expect from my Fuji setup. And only this.
That’s good to hear then. Must be a language difference though, as I didnt understand why you called my response “idiotic”. In the the end we are actually in the same page but with different interpretation I guess. Have a good day.
Hey, I was just joking. I replied to t_linn by the way. 😉 I never called you or your response idiotic. Wouldn’t do so. And I actually agree to most of the stuff that you’ve posted above. So, yeah, must be a language problem.
I’ll catch you on the flip side!
Ask yourself this, are you one of those who buys a Volkswagen and complains why it doesn’t drive like a porsche. Then ultimately buys a Porsche and first to complain again that it doesn’t have enough cup holder and can’t seat 5 people. Then goes on rambling that even a Kia has those features.
Why don’t you guys just face it, the x pro series is a niche product same as any other rangefinder type of camera. You might be better off waiting for an x-t2 which would make more sense. Imho. Right now fuji have better priorities than 4k. I would rather get the focusing to the T, than giving importance to video.
There is more they need to do.
They are two generations behind in sensor resolution. They need to not only become current, but leapfrog the current state. This isn’t a matter of “16mp is good enough for me,” it’s a matter of surviving with even current market share against the competition.
Secondly, they need people to trust the current ISO numbers, as factored against an arbitrary hand-held meter.
Finally, they need to have been working all along with the top 3 raw converter software vendors, so that from day of launch the new sensor is supported. No more pointing figures at the software vendor, when the reality is in 2015 all must work together.
That’s just to put them on parity with the competition.
Yep, 4k is a definite check off, especially for the launch price.
Yep, fast focusing is a definite check point for 2016. True, the X-E2 and then the X-T1 were launched with Fuji touting they had the fastest autofocus ever (albeit with tiny asterisks). This time they need to hit that point and move beyond it.
Fail on those hurdles and I’m very afraid for them.
“Finally, they need to have been working all along with the top 3 raw
converter software vendors, so that from day of launch the new sensor is
supported.”
They just need to drop that stupid X-Trans color array, fire the internal people who still push it – and proper RAW support, 4k, better focusing and longer battery life, along with much cheaper off-the-shelf sensors (best of all Samsung, not Sony IMX193 or even IMX271) will all fall into place.
$$$$$
very good points BatataKara…having proper 4K video means all the internal systems are modern and working properly…it means the camera should be relevant for years after it is released…Fuji’s competitors will use the lack of 4K in Fuji’s bodies as a reason to not buy Fuji and buy theirs…the rumor that Canon will not be putting 4K in the 5D4 is one very good reason I was looking to fully move to Fuji…even though stills is what I mostly shoot.
As implied by Patric, the 4K limitation is due to slow readout technology or slow processing technology. This probably has implications on other features.
Also, as I wrote, I’m expecting this to be just the first of few other disappointing posts.
I apologize in advance in case my prediction is wrong, but, you must know the truth deep inside.
“very good points BatataKara…having proper 4K video means all the internal systems are modern and working properly” It means nothing of the kind.
Well here is what Makoto Oishi, with Fuji Camera sales and Marketing said…
“Currently, our X-Trans CMOS II [sensor] cannot realize 4K videos because it has a smaller number of pixels, like 16-megapixel. Also, if we [want to] realize 4K video, the sensor itself should have much faster reading speed.”
“But of course we will challenge [ourselves] to make something with 4K video.”
“We know that our video quality has a bit of negative feedback from the customers, so we are developing new technology, for both still shooting and videos.”
We [think that good] products should be updated, especially the X-T1. We want to expand our X-T1 user base, so we should [provide] every kind of technology we have to the X-T1 series.
“Also the X-Pro is an important product for us, still important. Both the X-T1 and X-Pro are our flagship models.”
Well I don’t know danakincaid….if Fuji upgraded the sensor for video…faster through-put speed…you wouldn’t think that would also help with “stills” through-put speed?
Not hardly. You wish it works like that.
I love fuji camera’s and hated the fact I had to buy into the Sony a7rii system to see resolution and 4k improvements. But no matter how much I love Fuji, I can’t just sit back and defend them for being more that a little unimaginative with the X-Pro2. Of course, this is still a rumour and could be totally wrong!
all your comments have been negative and telling us how bad Fujis is doing.
And you are saying you don’t even own a Fuji – so my question is: what do you shoot (both equipment and style) and why do you want a Fuji? (I guess you want a Fuji, because why else would you be here)
First of all – I’m not a professional,
I own two Nikons – a D7000 and an old D5100 that I got for a great price.
I mainly use Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (stabilized) usually on the far end.
I shoot manly Family, family gatherings, my two little daughters, local trips. I shoot weddings 🙂 but as a guest (I arrive to a wedding with my camera, it’s both fun for me and )the bride and groom are usually surprised with the results.
My daughters are quick and unpredictable, they never stand in place not even for a second. I sometimes find that by the time I focus, my daughters aren’t there.
Also, I find that my photos improve considerably when I post- process it with Lightroom , sometimes it’s a matter of 1 minute of work.
I’ve been following fuji ever since the X-Pro1, waiting for the right time to jump in,
I love the rangefinder style and the small form factor.
I find that I skip taking my camera to places because of it’s weight and size and I believe that a smaller camera will fix that issue for me.
I also like the quality lenses.
Will probably buy the X-E3 when it gets out after I verify that focus has improved.
Not sure it matters for THIS camera. Fuji needs to offer it though in 2016.
If you want a video camera, buy a video camera. this is just a camera to take pictures.
Your in the minority. Fuji wants to please you and the majority. They want to sell their cameras.
“Fuji wants to please you and the majority. ” If they wanted to do that, guess they could have gone the way of the 28MP Samsung. Which. Now. Is kaput. Heard it was a good camera. However, it just didn’t stand out. The XPro-1? That stands out.
Not compared to the sales of “X-T1”. That’s the camera that made a big impact and has outsold every other camera they’ve made.
I’ve owned each of their camera’s and it is the easiest to use in multiple situations, client shoots, mountain photography or studio work (with vertical grip). It is a very flexible camera. The X-Pro1 in the end was a niche camera and as such, did not return the same levels of profits and profit is what they need.
Think long term. More capable camera, more customers.
Don’t you want to be able to upgrade to a brand new Fuji camera in 10 years ?
I really hope they are using a BSI sensor (Samsung or Sony). What ever they choose we will be stick with for a while.
This sensor will literally tell us what things will be like for the next 2 years. If it’s not something like the 28mp sensor from Samsung or like the Sony 7rmk2 it’s not going to be good for Fuji.
What I would really love would be the ability to use my fuji glass via some kind of speed-booster type adapter on the likes of a Panasonic GH4, or BMPCC. Since m4/3 glass is fly-by-wire anyway… it seems reasonable to think firmware could control focusing on the fuji glass… but maybe I’m just ignorant.
In theory you’re right, but that would need to reverse engineer the signals send by the m 4/3 and received by the fuji glass, and built in some kind of translator. Not a small feat
You seem to have some knowledge about how this things work. While we are at it, how about using the Fuji lenses on an E mount camera with an adaptor?
Not really but being computer software engineer by trade I can imagine how I would do it, but I could be wrong of course. With an E-mount there you enter the optics territory (ie flange distance, circle covered etc …)
All in all it might be cheaper and less complicated to use Fuji Glass on … a Fuji body 🙂
thanks for the reply.
Fuji X-mount has shorter flange distance than m43, any speedbooster able to focus to infinity (or anywhere further than a few feet really) would be impossible (at least without some never before seen focusing aids in the speedbooster itself) and then it is cheaper to simply buy m43 lenses or DSLR lenses which allow for speedboosters.
Ah, well without knowing too much about the technical aspects of these cameras, that does make sense. Well… I’d settle for a Fuji video camera that accepts X lenses, like Sony did with their E-mount camcorders.
“Impossible” is a strong word. Using relay lenses it could be done, but perhaps not easily.
Impossible without focusing support in adapter itself. How would you do it otherwise?
Well, I guess you can install a matte screen in place of the sensor and adapter will look like a fixed focus macro lens. Pretty big thing, but possible, probably with some light losses.
Questions:
X-Pro2 to have EXR III processor (processor rumored to be fast enough for 4k video) but not able to shoot 4k? Am I to assume that down the line there will be a FW fix to unlock the 4k video? or is the EXR III processor not capable of running 4k? or is 4k another difference between the rumored two HW versions of the X-Pro2?
Your guess is as good as anyone’s although
” X-Pro2 will not feature 4K video at its launch ” /seems/ to indicate that it is a possibility further down the line. I would not bet the ranch on that though.
well, maybe we will get a silver graphite vision 3 months later with 4K and then they will do the KAISEN thing, like they did with the x t1
4k needs a hardware encoder, a software one is too power hungry at this point. Either they will buy the encoder IP and integrate it into their processor, or they will not. It would be too strange to pay license fee for the IP, incur the integration costs, and then not enable it in the product.
It isn’t strange at all. Many many companies in their product development will include HW features and not enable them when the product releases. As the FW team gets better and works bugs out, HW features can be turned on. A great example is the X-T1 in its FW ‘unlocks’. Another example is the PS4. The seventh core was just unlocked for developers. The question is is that HW encoder going to be installed and it is a matter of a FW ‘on-switch’, or is the HW encoder going to be installed in the other version of the X-Pro2?
What IP for which Fuji has been paying licensing fees was unlocked in X-T1 by firmware? All they did is software improvements, not enabling anything in hardware.
X-Pro 2 isn’t quite the camera to put in 4K video recording. X-T2 would be a better body to have that. Let X-Pro 2 be for photographers.
That sounds good! But IBIS is also becoming something to be expected from a basic camera body from this category, though…
100%
“But IBIS is also becoming something to be expected from a basic camera body from this category, though…” Really? Leica just came out with a new rangefinder that has no video capability at all. Expected? Sure. Ya. Whatever.
That’s my opinion, you got yours; no need to be rude, go take a shower…
IBIS is fine with f4 zoom lenses with less than optimum sharpness as the very slight lack of, but observable, true plane parallel alignment of the sensor is covered by the depth of field and optical defects.
However when using an IBIS mounted sensor with a Fuji 56mm f1.2 or 90mm f2 at maximum aperture it will obvious, as the wide aperture and flat field of the lenses will show the lack of true sharpness across the focal plane.
I wasn’t aware of that… I did thought of using my older, slower Minolta lenses.
I’d agree but I feel the omission of 4k will be down to sensor / processor capabilities and there is very little chance they’d sell a T2 with a newer sensor /processor compared to their flagship camera.
If that was their intentions, then great, I’d prefer the 4k in the X-T body as you say but based on their previous history of using the same sensor across all camera’s, probably unlikely.
I think that for the length of time that Fuji has been developing this camera that they would have come out with an option of 4k in their X-PRO 2, this seems like a given, I want a mostly future proof camera, I love fuji glass, I love the look and feel, and the results are gorgeous, but Ive already started looking into sony and others to fulfill my video needs, I don’t love having multiple systems, and would rather invest in one camera system. This news to me is very sad indeed.
It isn’t the 4K video I couldn’t live without, but it supports my recent (difficult decision) purchase of an A7rii in that it’s an indication to me Fuji will deliver yet another camera without a state of the art sensor (which would probably have 4K). I too am saddened I am losing the faith a little with Fuji. I LOVE the lenses and the looks/ergonomics, with a few exemptions (notably the noisy 35 1.4, which is exceptional optically) and the ‘rattly’ cheap feeling shutter button and other buttons on the X-T1, but you really can only update cameras so many times these days without putting significantly improved sensor technology and performance inside before people will start to realise they might never have a state of the art sensor with that system and start to look elsewhere. It’s a bizarre situation which would have been unimaginable with film – imagine if someone has designed a body which couldn’t have used the latest and greatest film emulsions of the time – it would never have sold no matter how nice everything else was…
Video. Blackmagic Ursa is a far better option. Its less than a RED system and you can use Canon Cine lenses too. Way better option than a A7rii or quasi pro video setup. More bang for your video bucks too.
I totally agree, I’m waiting for the Ursa Mini 4.6K to actually be available.
With you there. I really didn’t want to move to Sony A7rii but I couldn’t stay at the same image resolution and no 4k video. Just wasn’t an option. As you say, they’ve had long enough to come up with it and, if they don’t, we know we have a hell of a long wait for the next revision (x-pro3). If there’ll ever be one.
“I want a mostly future proof camera” Ya… That’s fraking ridiculous right there.
As in, buying a camera now that will handle the future business demands for 4k footage. As in, not buying a camera at a high cost today only to have to buy a different system in a years time be able to compete / for fill a contract with a client that wants 4k footage.
Yeah, ridiculous that they’d want to do that.
if fuji is creating a v series 4k video camera for itself then it makes sense that they shouldnt add it to there photography line up. xpro2 and other x series should definitely stay as an iconic photo cameras for artist who loves shooting stills. oops. i think that just leaked? right fujifilm? =) j/k
Isn’t “V Series” Nikon though?
I imagine most buyers of the X-Pro2 don’t care about video at all. Fuji might have been better off eliminating video than failing to provide a competitive video feature. I can understand why some would look at this as evidence that Fuji is falling further behind the technological curve. That said, if the AF and sensor are competitive with current offerings from other brands, not many will be worried about a lack of 4K.
“…not feature 4K video at its launch…” Does this mean, that it might came later with a new firmware?
No 4k – probably because of the idiotic X-Trans color filter which is too expensive (in terms of power needed = heat dissipated) to process.
I cannot believe they would use the ancient Sony IMX193, and IMX271 should be able to do 4k@24fps. IMX271 would also support much faster AF, 2 times as fast as IMX193.
“No 4k – probably because of the idiotic X-Trans color filter which is too expensive (in terms of power needed = heat dissipated) to process.”
Why are you on this forum? If you care about video, gods go buy a Panasonic 4/3 camera. Good cameras. Cheap too. I’m interested in STILLS.
I’m interested in the great fuji lenses, fuji bodies, fuji colours and video.
Oh, that’s right, that’s not an option. Silly me.
Yes, you’re interested in stills so the rest of the world must follow. Time for a reality check I think.
I’m mainly a stills shooter (full time job) but I do need to shoot 4k video from time to time. It makes more sense to have it in one camera rather than buying a second system for the few times video is needed.
I just love the way people look at their own requirements as being universal! I’d have been happy to go with good, not excellent 4k even but to leave it out altogether is a risky move if they want to expand their customer base. In the end, I realised Fuji weren’t going to do anything soon and moved on (world doesn’t revolve round my needs)
That said, I’ve kept one X-T1 with a 50-140 but ended up selling all their other lenses and now use Sony’s A7rii as my main system. I just couldn’t afford to ignore 4k any longer….. business need. That’s one customer who’s gone who spent close to £10k on Fuji camera equipment in 18 months (lenses, cameras and backups).
Still shots of still life? Then you should look at A7r, they are very cheap already.
Stills of moving subjects are better with 4k photo too, simply much more probability to catch a right moment.
Not really concerned the lack of 4K video, the rangefinder-esque nature of the X series doesn’t really lend it to serious video use. The X-trans sensors have never supported video well.
Seriously: who the hell cares? If you went to Fuji for good video quality in near future, you’re a moron anyways… they’re working on it but, obviously, further lenses and new bodies have a much higher priority. And understandably so. There are other options for video (Panasonic, Canon and maybe Sony… or just go for pure video stuff).
If the reason to have only HD video is because 4K would require a faster sensor and reader does it means that the moiré issue will not be solved (as these were the conditions we were told to be needed to overcome it)?
Until now I don’t use video to an extent that this would be a real problem for me but I find very strange the number of people that seem to consider this almost as an advantage.
If X-Pro2 is meant to be a professional camera we can’t forget that nowadays every pro must look at video as something the market requires and, no matter if the body has the best shape or not, they should be in a position to provide it to their customers if absolutely necessary.
I have absolutely no interest in 4K Video. The only time I use video is for family stuff and I am more than happy with basic HD. In fact I doubt my laptop would cope very well with editing it anyway. I would be happy for the R&D to be spent on other, photography, areas but I suppose 4K is one of those things that you have to have to sell cameras these days – even if only a small percentage of camera owners actually use it. I tend to agree with other comments in that these range-finder style cameras are not really what you would be buying if you are serious about video, in that case you would be waiting for the the XT2
I don’t give a rat’s ass about video capture with my still camera AT ALL.
Good gods.
If I want a video camera, I will buy a video camera.
got that right
And if you don’t want a camera that does video go buy a film camera… Fuji does do video so you know what to do.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
And lenses for your video camera…
And batteries, accessories, and a new bag to carry all that stuff…
Or leave Fuji to buy a A7RII, that’s the real danger. A7RII produce very good stills too AND 4K. I’m afraid Fuji is losing customers because of Sony. Less sales, less money, less R&D, bad for every Fuji owner…
LOL that attitude is so hilarious. It’s called increasing market share.
Also what’s with the polytheism?
Look. People. Haven’t you ever heard, “The right tool for the right job”? As cheap as digital cameras are, you can pretty much afford multiple bodies and or systems to get the tool for the job at hand. You want video (4k)? Fine. Go buy a Panasonic. Go buy a Canon. You want medium format? Pentax. Leica. Hassy. You want a fast motorcycle? MV Agusta.
I’ve tried some of those other cameras I keep hearing about, like the Sony A7s. The menu system is still a mess, the shutter releases are sloppy. Those things that make a camera a great tool and not just a computer in a box are sadly lacking. So, I don’t like their cameras, which means I won’t buy them. I don’t go on the Sony forums to whine about it though.
You folks though? My GODZ. Whine whine whine.
As you say, not everyone likes sony camera. Many people love fuji cameras and lenses, and would love to use them for video too. The lack of decent video is the only reason I don’t use fuji. I can’t help but think that fuji would like to have me as a customer too.
Let’s explore that. Are you saying that if Fuji does video you’ll quit Sony, or buy into a second system?
I have Fuji, but plan on buying a Sony (or re-buy into Nikon, if they come out with a decent improvement in their FF line). 4K, along with better low-light AF (very much needed) would stop me leaving Fuji.
Already followed that path….. business need, I couldn’t wait forever…. still kept one T1 & 50-140 but all the other lenses have now been sold. I need consistency in equipment when working and the only reason I have 1 x-t1 is for it’s ability to survive nicely in heavy rain. Otherwise it would have also been sold.
Precisely what do you call “decent” video? Lets try excellent (more points) and faster AF, increased dr, at least 10fps burst and continuous shooting, dual card slot for RAW + jpeg shooting.
I don’t agree with the motorcycle. Sorry, Ducatisti 😉
kkk…
You’re kinda whining too… just sayin’
4k video in my Fuji? Not. Would never use it. Wouldn’t waste my time dealing with editing and color grading a 4k video format from my Fuji camera. A blast of headaches it would be. I would use the Blackmagic Ursa Mini, Canon Cine lenses and the free Davinci Resolve for that option.
Unless… they made it so it didn’t suck… there could be that…
I am just looking forward to seeing what it turns out to be. If it has 4k video, nice. If not, I don’t care. The only thing I care about is whether they have designed a solid stills camera with 1/8000 of a second shutter speed, better AF accuracy in low light, a very bright and large viewfinder, and a considerable boost in image quality over the previous X-Series cameras.
I personally want it to have wings.
It’s not about 4K video, it’s about yet another bit of misinformation, FR is trying to wriggle out of.
It doesn’t do 4k, it record the entire sensor output in raw at 24fps.
One can dream 🙂
Of course I get that Fuji are still machines but I cannot shake the idea that the color rendition and excellent lenses, not to mention the details and dynamic range, would combine to deliver some very nice wedding footage or sport pictures by grabbing the best frame of the bunch.
That being said the only disappointment concerning the x-pro2 rumors is that none include sensor stabilization which would definitely be a kick ass addition since I mostly use my Fuji during parties and events, basically dark places and even though high ISO looks good it’s not like the grain is absent and most of the time it’s unwanted.
Hey people, do you have a 4K computer monitor to process and show your images ?
Hey 2000…You know how you can crop a still image…well…4K video lets you “crop” video…here is a very common example…say I have 4K in my still camera and I am “still” shooting at an event, when I see a very personal emotional scene taking place that video would be very appropriate for, boom, I push the switch on my camera body from stills to video, and I record the scene a little wide, all handheld, because I am not using a big fancy and expensive stabilized video rig. I then take the handheld (somewhat shaky) video into my video software and I tell the software to “stabilize” the video…the software stabilizes the video by looking at each frame and then cropping each frame so the center is completely still, like it was shot with a $15,000 3 axis gimbal video rig. Yep…the final output is 2.5K or 2K or 1080…but the video looks great and can be delivered to a client and you are a hero. And that is why I want 4K in my next stills camera body.
Well put.
Very very very good way to put it! Extremely on point!
News flash, there are cell phones with image stabilization that can do the same exact thing (Lumia 950 etc.). And stabilized cinema video cameras aren’t that expensive anymore. Why increase the price of an excellent stills camera by including “so so” or subpar video. You can get a pro cinema Blackmagic Ursa mini with 4.6k and Super 35 + free color grading software for under $3000 with 15 stop of dr. Maybe your clients will be impressed with subquality 4k video. Just because its 4k doesn’t really make it impressive.
You and I don’t agree…we never will…I want great full featured 4K video in my stills camera, I don’t want 2 cameras, I want one camera that does everything, and one set of lenses.
Cell phone, really, your bringing a cell phone into the conversation.
Obviously you don’t even get what I wrote above, shoot 4K, don’t deliver 4K, use the 4K as a tool in post.
You do realize Fuji’s management said they were putting 4K in the camera, right. I did not ask for 4K in a Fuji body until Fuji said it themselves.
I should add…if you don’t know how to tell a compelling story, all the expensive camera gear in the world won’t help you.
That applies to stills and video.
Oh, ok. One camera that does it all extremely well for under $2800. I hear ya.
It would be a safe bet to wager that most of Fuji users didn’t invest into the Fuji camera system for video. And it would be logical to expect Fuji to improve considerably on the stills aspects of the camera system. I hope to take the camera out on the circuit in July (Olympics). Thats “Showtime” for camera systems. Or I will just have to take the 5dmk III out the bag. I would hope to get more than 8fps continuous, at least 10. Improved AF in dim lighting not total darkness. Electricity will be at a premium. I expect Fuji to improve the stills portion (fps) with this new sensor and processor. I will be kinda pissed. Not totally.
Art. Everyone doesn’t have to understand your work, nor your style. You must understand your work, and have a style. Even if its abstract
So Jam005…your on here putting down 4K in Fuji cameras and you don’t even know what Fuji’s own statments have been about including 4K video in this coming round of bodies…incredible.
I mean, here you are attacking me, and it turns out you don’t even know what you are talking about. I always give people too much credit.
Well it was an interview. Reread what Patrick (Fujirumors) wrote at the beginning of this post, there is a link to the interview. If you can’t figure that out I am not going to help you. I have wasted too much time as it is.
Well Jam005…after look at most of your posts on this thread…you sure have one on for the Blackmagic Ursa mini.
How much $$$ is a set of Canon Cine lenses, right.
Your just a little Blackmagic marketing powerhouse.
hahaha. Nah Dave, I don’t have one. Had to propose a budget for a music video.
Its just the least expensive of the three, RED scarlet at $7950 brain only. Canon C300 $15,000 Ursa reg $5000 and Ursa 4.6k mini 5lbs and $3000. This is Cinema, broadcast quality 4k and 4.6k. You don’t have to use Canon cine lenses. But don’t you want to pull focus with a cine lenses if can rent one? ……. If I am going to do serious video, why would I spend nearly $3000 on a partial video camera. Of course you can go the Sony route. It used to be the least expensive route. Not anymore. Still gonna cost you $$ and time spent in color grading and converting. how much time does your editor and color grader have? It would be ok to play around with in the Fuji I guess. For me personally thats about it.
I still have an X-T1 with the 50-140 but this is one of the reasons I switched to Sony A7rii for the majority of FL’s (16-35, 28, 35,55 & 90). I needed to have the option for 4k. It makes no difference that I personally do not have a 4k TV. I make money by selling 4k footage as well as stills and I need the tools to do this.
It’s a shame as I really like using Fuji and still do with the T1 & 50-140, especially when it’s chucking it down in rain but they are pushing away photographers who make their living from their gear. The very people that don’t bat an eye at spending several £1k’s a time to buy lenses etc (tax deductible etc). They need to get with it otherwise they will see a dwindling customer base,
That only works up to a point. Stabilizing in post does not get rid of motion blur introduced by the camera shake. You could shoot at shorter shutter speeds, but that will either give you stroby consumerish-looking video or optical flow interpolation artifacts if you try to fake it in post. It all depends on how high the standards of your clients are, though.
Since 99.9% of the people on this board can’t creatively comprehend what I even said…why don’t you just give me the credit that, technically, I also know how to do it.
You explained that very well with a specific example of how you use it..
IBIS would be 100000000 times better tan 4K, as many of us use legacy lenses.
I doubt they’ll add IBIS anytime soon (if ever) considering a lot of their lenses come with stabilization.
They could do like Sony, just using one of both..
I would hate Fuji to simply copy what Sony does, that would be a step backwards
Sure, better not having useful features if your rival does have them…
I think I’ll pass on the cheap irony
Well, the cheap irony is caused by the childish comment. Saying that Fuji having IBIS would imply Fuji copying Sony is the same as saying that Fuji having IS in lenses is the same as Fuji copying Canon / Nikon.
Nothing childish : I meant “If Fuji simply copies it is a step backwards”, I expect more from Fuji, as they did with the first round from bodies.
On the particular issue of IBIS though, 1. I am not holding my breath since they went the in-lens OIS, which you will agree works wonders even though it is not the full solution for every case and 2. IBIS / OIS help only in SOME situations it is not the the ultimate panacea either
Why would it only be copying Sony anyway? Olympus have by far the best and most mature IBIS system. I really missed it when I swapped to Fuji.
A lot ? Except zooms, none of the current lenses is stabilized…
Unless you’re a video shooter I guess. 😛 Actually IBIS would be good for them too.
This is looking like a pretty ho-hum evolutionary update (x-pro1s). Unless the HVF is amazing, I won’t consider this camera. I’m going to wait for the X-T2.
You should do that.
My two cents without reading any others…. RIGHT ON! You want a video camera, go buy one, I would much prefer to have a camera that focuses (sorry) on being the best it can be at stills. You can’t be better than everyone else by trying to do the same thing they do…
Agree
Yeh but if it can do both then why not… though personally I don’t use fuji for video.
Could do great stills AND better video.
In fact, fast sensor read-out and processor needed for video would be a huge benefif for stills (autofocus, reactivity , electronic shutter…)
I’ll settle for having great fast AF. Nuts to video.
Photo unrelated?
No, dearie. Fast autofocus. That and image quality are what I care about. You don’t need some bloody 4k video machine to pull stills out of to be a good photographer. Decisive moment? Oh, why do I need to compose anything, I’ll just take the best of these 4000 frames and put it into Photoshop!
Are you photographers, or hacks?
Your funny
You do realise there’s other reasons to shoot 4k than pulling out 8MP stills right?
There’s an interesting phenomenon whenever fuji people discuss video: people voicing strong opinions AGAINST video features in fuji cameras. You would think it’s best for fuji not to care about video at all.
But thinking about it there’s a strong selection bias involved: People who care about video naturally look elsewhere, which leaves fuji with those customers who are not interested in video in the first place.
Speaking for myself, I would love to use great fuji lenses and image quality in video work. I love their cameras, but alas, for now I’ll have to use other brands. The last time I checked, fuji was still a niche brand, but I think the poor video keeps a lot of people from choosing them.
You nailed it.
Sums it up nicely
I think you’re right. Personally speaking, I use other devices for video (and I shoot video professionally occasionally) but it wouldn’t hurt to have decent video (at least 1080p) in fuji to keep them competitive. Gosh the ONLY reason people buy a Panasonic GH-4 is to shoot 4k 😛
Why not take some of that market?! 😉
This smells like a marketing decision.
They are saving 4K video for the X-T2. They are well aware that the X-PRO2 will barely sell.
Zzzzz
Unfortunately it’s true. Compared to the X-T1, the X-Pro was well down the pecking order. That doesn’t mean it’s not a good camera, it’s just a niche camera for a smaller market audience.
Most consumers prefer cameras that feel like a DSLR but they’d just just like them smaller. Hence the reason the X-T1 done so well. It satisfied pros that wanted smaller / lighter cameras but were also easy to handle in the studio (with the addition of a vertical grip).
So, on that basis it would make more sense to offer the extra features in the X-T2 over the X-Pro2 as the X-T2’s market audience is going to demand these features more than the X-Pro2’s market audience which will be significantly smaller (as history has shown).
My concern is that the lack of 4k is due to sensor / processor capabilities. If that’s the case then the given their history of using the same sensor across all models, the X-T2 will also be missing these features.
If that’s the case I’ll hold onto my last T1 until the A7rXX series releases a version that handles weather proofing better and add a couple of them to my A7rii kit. I’m still hoping for the X-T2 being 4k though as I love the 50-140 lens.
Xpro 1 was Fuji’s first attempt, announced in January 2012 and launched in March 2012. It had/has many quirks that make it… a so-so camera for many people… therefore people snapped up the cameras that came later with improvements… like…
… the X-T1, which was announced January 28, 2014 and released later that year.
That’s a 2 year difference.
A long time for fuji to develop a market share, lenses, technology etc. It’s no wonder the X-T1 sold a lot more than the FIRST attempt when they didn’t have that many lenses.
I don’t think form factor means anything. People buy the X-T1 because it’s the best Fuji (for now) people will snap up a Xpro 1. Heck a lot of people perfect a rangefinder style layout and dislike the hump on top. I know personally I like this for a small camera… don’t be so quick to think the Xpro 2 won’t sell because of the possible X-T2.
I agree that the X-Pro2 should fair better than the Pro1. It should be a more rounded camera. I don’t believe the X-Pro2 won’t sell because the X-T2 is round the corner, it’s just that a lot of people don’t get on as well with range finder style cameras.
For me, form factor does make a big difference in terms of flexibility. The T1 is a little more compact, better grip and weatherproofed. The Pro1 always felt a little awkward when using it in the studio whereas the T1 and Vertical grip worked really well. Felt balanced.
The optical view finder was a bit of a waste as well for me. I used lenses from 10mm – 200mm so most of the time it was pointless.
The Pro2 should be a good camera and will have a niche following but, if you don’t need the OVF, there is little point paying the extra over the X-T series for it. To me, the X-Pro will be ideal for people using 16 to 50mm focal range who like street / portrait photography. Just too limiting for me as I deal with quite a varied client base.
“it’s just that a lot of people don’t get on as well with range finder style cameras.”
Huh? a6000 is by far the best selling mirrorless camera, just look at Amazon ratings where a6000 in various kits and colors take almost all the top spots.
What people don’t get on well is with egregious overpricing. $1200-$1600 camera which is barely better than $400 a6000 will not sell, period. APS-C is APS-C, 24mpix is 24mpix, and a6000 already has 11fps and working OSPDAF. No controls or weather-sealing and such secondary stuff combined will add more than $100 value over a6000 in the eyes of _MASS_ customer. If you think otherwise, you are simply not a mass customer, and opinion of you and like yours will generate DOZENS of sales. So cool!
a6000 pricing puts very effective ceiling over APS-C and m43 cameras with up to 24mpix, and all mirrorless camera manufacturers who were unable to adjust felt it in market share (see Panasonic and Olympus, Fuji did not even have any market share, ever).
To sell in mass today in APS-C and smaller formats for significantly more than $400, you need >30mpix, AND good EVF, AND 4k, AND working OSPDAF at high frame rate. Or some unlikely breakthrough like filterless multi-layer sensor with 1EV better low light performance and global shutter.
I am afraid only a6100 will deliver. Despite Sony E’s complete lack of interesting lenses. 16-50, 55-210 and 50/1.8 are enough for mass market, and priced OK (at least in kits). $250 for APS-C 50/1.8 with stabilization? Even m43 cannot offer that.
LOL wot?
it’s a nice to have but not critical for a camera IMO.
Most people don’t have 4k devices and Fuji’s are not historically video type cameras so I’m not too concerned.
They have a strong Videography history. Search on their Cine Lenses etc. Just not at a consumer level at the moment. Their expertise in video lenses matched with a good stills & video camera could give some competitors a run for their money!
http://www.fujifilm.com/products/optical_devices/tv_cine/
You’re right, but 4k is good for video editing as it lets you crop and even a crappy camera can produce some nice sharp 1080p when downsized from 4k. So if you’re shooting to edit, it’s a nice format (even if the eventual output is just 1080p).
Lacking of 4K VIDEO doesn’t matter at all. Most of Fuji X users are focusing on taking photos rather than taking videos.
Probably because video on fuji cameras sucks. IF it didn’t suck I’d use it for video too. IT does suck however, so I use other cameras instead. Good thing fuji is so good with stills.
Yeah, it is safe to say Sony/Panasonic’s products have much better video quality than Fuji’s and some rumors said that new algorithm is required if we want to get high quality video from X-Trans CMOS.
The best solution would be to get rid of X-Trans color mask at all and simply buy off the shelf Samsung 28mpix sensor with Bayer mask, great both for stills and video.
By the way, here are two micphones on the top of X-Pro2 so at least we can get stereo instead of mono. My friend showed me a picture about it, who is working for FujiFlim has already got the Prototype.
I think perhaps you should share that picture with the rest of us friendo.
I wish I could but we still have to keep it secret until 15th Jan. Anyway, X-Pro2 is coming, all of us are looking forward to new body, aren’t we?
I sure am. 🙂
Yeah, it’s no argument to say most Fuji users only take stills…… they have no bl**dy option as the video is crap 🙂
I loved their lenses and I’m sure they’d have been great but I sold them all (apart from 50-140 and one T1) to buy a camera that gave me the option. Sony A7rii. If they’d offered a better resolution 24mp+ with 4k they’d still be my main system for work.
But you are defining photography by your specific needs (and doing it over and over again, I might add). If I were defining photography by my specific needs, I’d be constantly complaining that every modern camera delivers too much resolution (I could probably get away with 6MP at a pinch, and I reckon I’ve only ever needed to use more than 12MP about twice in the last 10 years, for front cover images) and are packed full of superfluous features like video and image stabilisation, often ignoring really useful features like a PC and a minijack socket for monolights in the process.
I learned early on that most people aren’t me. They have different demands and requirements. Camera companies make products that fit the demands and requirements of a sector of the market. Fuji is not Sony; it lacks the resources, and the media spend, to compete head on. So it doesn’t, and instead makes products that appeal to a particular photographic niche. I actually prefer this Fuji-shaped niche because it fits my picture taking requirements better than the alternatives, IMO. Not everyone would agree, but I’m comfortable with that.
‘But you are defining photography by your specific need’
I would agree. But then again,we all do I guess. I prefer the “Fuji” approach but feel their gear was, in the end, never going to fit what I need so I had to reluctantly move on, apart from one camera. I was sort of hoping they would keep to what they hinted at in the quote interview.
I haven’t posted here for a while so you’ll have to forgive me, I guess I was disappointed that there will be no return to Fuji anytime soon. Seeing a lot of people defining photography by their needs (dead against video and high resolution etc) made me think I should air my specific needs. But I guess that’s not what the majority want to hear, which is ok.
well, we fujistas are very protective of the X cameras. But don´t give up on us yet. Fuji might as well surprise us.
I never do use video on my X-Pro1. Not because it sucks… I’m just not into video. All I care is photos and I think users who are focused on video will anyway never buy the X-Pro model nor any other Fuji X-Trans based camera. Dear Fuji, please give me a wonderful crafted tool for photos. That’s all I am looking for… and yes, I am only interested in the X-Pro series. I am not your “potential” customer, not talking about that I would if it had feature XYZ. I am a 100% satisfied, loyal customer and the X-Pro2 is on my planned buying list. Period.
I don’t use it because it sucks. My phone can literally shoot better video. I’d use it if it didn’t suck, but I’m not worried about it, I have other cameras for video.
THANK GOD
Whist it is not a focus for me I like to see Fuji sell well to protect my long term investment in x mount lenses. 4K may have attracted more buyers although i am not that fussed personally
The question is why. Is it the heat issue? Is it issues with the xtrans sensor and software to do the video. Have they run out if development time to get 4K sorted before thee January deadline? Is the sensor older tech not capable of 4K? Time will tell. If is lack of time to develop the firmware may be they can add 4K later
Somewhat disappointing even though i do t use it. Give me fast af and ibis and im good.
“Somewhat disappointing even though I don’t use it”???? Well Fuji obviously know your not alone so why waste time and money?
Doesn’t matter if Full HD video is better / autofocus is great / camera is responsive and fast. That are the areas I wish my X-E1’d be better at…
“In fact, the Top Trusted Japanese source told me that the X-Pro2 will not feature 4K video at its launch, on January 15.”
Mmmm “at its launch”… so maybe later? Firmware update?
that’s what I am thinking. But let’s not speculate – let’s just bash Fuji like all the other haters and whiners!
To be honest: 4K is not really a feature most X-Pro Buyers are looking for – it’s probably more of an X-T feature. Hopefully the sensor is capable of 4K and it will be added via firmware update
I suspect we will get a silver graphite vision with 4K three months later.
I think we won’t see the APS-X version (if they really plan to make it). Just thinking if “it will be worth the wait” that we have heard long ago, will mean something really special, maybe revolutionary.
It’s probably fair to say that APS-C isn’t in the cards. Fujifilm must keep with APS-C and protect a fabulous lens lineup with sensor sizes well adapted to it, or design a new lens line to match a new sensor. Both may happen, but going the in-between route wouldn’t follow the rational steps they have taken to develop a full APS-C line from the ground up.
Xpro-2 with no 4k- thank you, no video at all possibly better. Focus on new sensors, lens, dynamic range improvements. Make the best stills camera a reality. I have followed from the x100 and believe.
Why believe? Surely you have evidence to lend weight to your decision to stay with Fujifilm. The word ‘believe’ is sad. It’s obvious that, though paced, Fujifilm are treading at their own speed toward a goal. They have rounded out a fabulous line of lenses in 3 years. They have done what seemed impossible at the end of 2011. Every step has been planned and every product (like it or not), been produced with care.
It’s planning and care that have brought about the X line, not faith. Please don’t use tarnished words like ‘believe’ about a company whose goal isn’t luck of the draw.
The point in all this is, fuji is more or less where it was 4 years ago. I know this is all rumors we are disscusing. But most of the rumors shared by FR has been true in the past. So i tend to believe them……What was fuji doing all this past 4 years. if my memory serve me right, they promised to bring out the x pro2 when they have a major tech. development. I can remember reading an interview of a fuji manager to that effect. A lot of us were happy to hear that and were willing to hold on to the fuji system. If this rumored camera is what they mean by major development …. I am tempted to laugh.
Not necessarily. The difficulty is headline specifications are the ones people gather up and discuss in extraordinary detail on rumour sites and forums. These specifications, however, may have no actual bearing on the design and development of the end product. So, the headline specs of an X-M1 and a X-T1 are extremely similar, but the difference between the two cameras in actual hands-on performance is vast.
What if the X-Pro2 is a genuine step-change in viewfinder, battery, AF and manual focus, DR, high ISO, and all those aspects that make the difference between a good camera and a fantastic camera, but don’t render down to a pithy little bromide? Does it just get lost in a sea of ‘4K’ and ‘megapixels’?
I thought photography was finally growing out of that phase.
Don´t forget that for some people a fantastic 2016 camera is a camera with 4K, a good RAW converter, IBIS and the other things you named. Having said that, i think Fuji is capable of surprising us, atleast i want to believe so……… Your example about the X-M1 make me laugh. I saw the specs. online and i thought i could buy it as a back up camera. But the moment i held it i knew that i don´t want it.
On the other hand, I think 4K might be one of those features that people like the idea of, rather than actually use. It’s the photographic equivalent of an asparagus peeler – a thing that sounds like it might be a good idea, but gets used once or twice and then gets forgotten.
Do you really need better EVF than X-T1 has? Why?
But with Fuji’s strength in primes very sharp in the middle, cropping capacity of higher-res still and video would not be in vain. Especially if provided right in camera as smooth digital zoom, with full preview in EVF and fast electronic shutter. 16/1.4, 23/1.4, 56/1.2… what else is needed if you can crop to your heart’s desire? Well, some UWA and long tele, 10/2 and 120/2 would be nice. 90/2 unfortunately captures slightly less light than 56/1.2 cropped to 90mm FoV, so not all that useful if you have enough pixels to crop. Maybe some 30/1.4 would better fit between 16 and 56 than either 23 or 35, and be actual normal lens for APS-C.
Could be a major development without 4K. Wait & see.
I hope you are right.
Right. 24mpix. Like in Nikon D3200 for $200 (now). Major news. Too bad that the details will be killed by X-Trans.
It doesn’t come with 4K video but with 5K, right?
Yipee! Just use your iPhone which will be in your pocket to satisfy your 4K video lust. I mean you came to the Fuji party because of the pluses? I know what I’m getting with Fuji and wish for this not to be compromised just to apparently keep up with others. How about the others give me beautiful files like my X-pro 1 does.
Let’s just and see this from outside of our Fujifilm fanboy bubble for a minute…No 4K on a pro-level camera in 2016 is dropping the ball. Yes, I personally couldn’t give a toss about video really, but it should at least be an option for people that do.
I want Fuji to grow and be successful, not just carry on struggling. Yes, we’re very loyal, but there simply isn’t enough of us. IBIS would be a nice addition to users of old glass as well as content creators…
Well would you be happy with 4K tech provided by Fuji knowing how they handled 1080 on previous models?
So because it was shit for video before , we should expect more of the same and be grateful for what we have? It really wouldn’t take that much R&D to just use a video codec that wasn’t junk and an industry standard one instead. Seeing, as it is a modified Sony sensor, that shouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility to have 4k.
What I expect is at least, but no more than, parity with other companies and that is more so, when I’m expected to pay a premium with the word “Pro” in its name.
If we take the fanboy hat for a second, and actually be objective, the more sales and success Fuji has, means more it has for future investment.
Don’t forget, if we’re going on their past record, we might not see an X-Pro3 for 4yrs, so if the hardware capabilities are outdated now, where will be then?
It is all very well us Fuji users being traditionalists/hipster twats, but most of us aren’t in any real terms, we using modern hardware with retro styling and just pretending we are 😉
Hell, what do I care, I’m gonna wait for the XT2 anyway…
You’re going to far, all I’m saying is that it wouldn’t be much if we had 4K with actual “quality” of Fuji’s previous mirrorless cameras. I’d rather have proper 1080 quality output with proper controls than a botched 4K.
As for modified Sony’s sensor, 24mpx and no 4K does seem to match A6000 specs.
Difference being, of course though, that Sony are at the opposite end of the spectrum and release models too frequently and a new model release what seems like every week…
Fuji doesn’t even do a decent 1080p video. For all the video haters, you realize lots of shooters want both and don’t want to run two systems? Great video will bring more into the fold – and everyone benefits from more sales, right?
Olympus is finally figuring it out, adding higher bitrates and flat profiles. Sony is making a killing selling cameras that shoot great stills AND video. As a Sony A7rII shooter – I lust after Fuji’s lens lineup and SOOC colors, but until they up their game on the video side that’s all it’ll ever be.
^^ Listen to this guy.
Great, I couldn’t care less. What is this for? Video guys can easily buy a Panasonic GH whatever for class leading video.
Anyway, I have enough of wannabe pro videos that are essentially static images with super slow zooming in and out then some slowmo- panning in fear of rolling shutter effects. Whenever I see one of those videos, I feel like in a Zen meditation movie.
New Leica M 262. NO video. NO live view:

A camera that JUST TAKES PICTURES! Oh wow, must be a HORRIBLE idea? Whatever.
And Oh DEAR G-d! It’s only 24 million pixels?! Waaaah! I must go and buy a Sony NOW! LOL LOL LOL. History lesson. Fighter planes. There have been some great designs for fighter-interceptors over the years. The ME-262 comes to mind, as well as some American planes. A design for a lightweight, spectacular interceptor… And then the suits come in and declare that the interceptor must now carry bombs, and guns for ground-attack, and some wing tanks, and maybe a second seat for a guy to run this and that, and pretty soon your interceptor is a big fat really expensive pig that does things ok, but nothing spectacularly. For example, the new F-35.
Not all of us, or perhaps most of us, need a tool to do everything. We just need a tool that concentrates on doing ONE THING really well.
You’re always that excited?
Something like this…
It is Leica. It is not for taking pictures, it is for giving to your business partner, and proudly displaying it under glass. Plenty of other cameras take better pictures easier and cheaper.
LOL…I just have to say it…get a Holga…$40 US…I mean really…how much more do you really need…with Fuji you have to turn knobs and push buttons…it’s all REALLY confusing and stuff…enough said
U seem mad.
Well, I kind of suspected it, and since I need professional 4K I had to get the Sony a7Rii. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford to keep my Fujifilm bodies and lenses. I had to sell them all: X-Pro1, X-T1, 35mm, 56mm. Everything. In any case my gf still has her X-T1, so that’s cool, I get to use it from time to time for old times’ sake. Fujifilm is indeed magic, but I really needed 4K, and higher megapixels count for large size prints.
It’ll probably come out of that Panasonic and Fujifilm partnership. If they both use it maybe it’ll boost the photographic prowess of the Lumix cameras and boost the video capabilities of Fuji’s cameras.
Video is not a priority for Fuji, never has been. For some this is the end of the world, for others it’s a matter of complete disinterest. I’m in the latter camp and I guess the sales figures will show who’s with me in due course.
Cinema5D posted that video interview with Iwatsuki-san who is a senior manager
for product planning at Sony industry consumer electronics. This are
just some of the answers he gave:
1) The market is shrinking but the pro and enthusiast market is revitalizing the market
2) In the future Photography and Videography will merge into one big industry. The future is bright.
3) Mirrorless today means high quality, small size and light weight.
4) Our mirrorless business is increasing. But it’s not a
success yet because we are still a challenger. We are not a champion
yet. We are trying to create innovative products that didn’t exist
before.
5) Small cameras and big lens issues: First we are
trying to expand our lens range as quick as possible. And we carefully
list to our customers voice. The first lenses were focused on high
quality lenses and that’s why they are big. But in the future we will
make more compact lenses. And we do recognize the need of faster lenses.
I’m really surprised that so many folk care about 4K. I wonder how many use their camera for video, a consumer poll would be interesting, perhaps there’s one out there somewhere?
Personally if I wanted video I would buy a video camera.
