[UPDATE] Black X-E2 kit in stock + is it worth to upgrade from the X-E1?

 photo adorama_zpsd0787d5d.jpg

The black X-E2 kit is in stock at Pictureline. AmazonUS, BHphoto and Adorama have only the silver kit in stock.

[UPDATE:] Things change quickly. The black X-E2 kit sold like hot cakes at BHphoto  and is now out of stock… but the good news is that it is back in stock at Adorama and Pictureline, and at [shoplink 19165 ebay]top rated ebayUS reseller kenmorecamera[/shoplink] now!

The body is still unavailable at the major online retailers… if you find it somewhere, share it on in the comments or at dealsrunner.com.

To upgrade or not to upgrate? That is the question at the moment. Mike Kobal will upgrate. The X-E2 will replace his X-E1. Not only, but will he sell also his X100S? Decisions, decision… read more here: “This might finally be the camera I have been waiting for, fast, small, lightweight, unobtrusive. Personally, I think the X-E2 is one of the best examples of the form follows function principle. I am seriously considering giving up high speed sync and the inaudible shutter in favor of interchangeable lenses. And it is black. Hmmmm. Only time will tell, for now I am planning to keep mine 🙂 Check back by the end of the week for an update with images!”

An update to what belongs the X-E2 French double kit offer (18-55 + 55-200): It should be available at the end of December/start of January.

And here is B&H deal on the X-E1 with kit lens: For $1,099 you get the X-E1, 18-55, 16GB SD-card and Ruggard Streak 25 Shoulder Bag (save $55)

    1. Seriously, why would anyone get a 40% improvement on what they already own for 100% of the price? this is ridiculous (unless they are loaded, then its fine). I would much rather wait for the X-Pro 2 or the weather sealed X because that would most likely offer even more features on top of what we already have (which is the X-E1 presumably), or even do the right thing to do and buy a lens that augments our shooting capabilities ( I would get the 14mm, or even the Toui 12mm for example).

I really think people give into consumerism way too easily, they just see a new shiny thing and go “Oh snap I dont have the best anymore? gotta change that now!”. On the plus side, If anyone is looking to switch to the X there should be plenty of cheap cheap X-E1s on ebay that people like these are trying to get rid of… who knowd, they might even come with a lens for only a few dollars more!

      1. I think you supplied the solution to this “stupid” behaviour yourself. If you know how to set up an auction, you might get the missing 60% by selling your old X-E1 on ebay. 😉
But of course I agree with you there are also those who want to have the newest gadget. As well as those for whom a faster camera means they can work faster and a second body is very useful.

      2. Agreed. One solution to that is toe get around the 100% of the price by selling as soon as the new camera’s rumored date is approaching. That way, you’re staying a fee weeks without the old camera but can get the new one by paying an extra 20% of the old camera’s price. That’s what I’ve done with both X100 and X100s and it has worked really well.

  1. I have an X-E1 and X-E2. Is it worth upgrading? I think it is worth it. The X-E2 is really the X-E1 completed. Most of the quirky or annoying things about the X-E1 are solved and the speed is nice. The X-E1 is great, though. I will probably have it converted for IR or astro.

  2. I upgraded from the X-E1 to the X-E2 primarily due to the shutter speed of 180 on the dial. I only had the X-E1 for about 2 months, but I primarily take photos using off-sync flash and it used to drive me bonkers (especially how it would switch back from 160 after you playback).

I do like the face recognition feature for when I ask others to take photos but normally don’t use it.

I only took one set of photos so far, but I’m still not convinced that the focus is much better (for portraits, it is off-center anyway, focusing on the eye, so phase detection doesn’t help). I ended up taking approximately half the pictures using manual focus (with the 60mm) just in case.

I LOVE the X-E2. But of course, it was a costly decision since I just bought the X-E1. (I know I would lose too much money selling the X-E1 on ebay, so I gave it to my wife to use. But she has the X100S and LOVES that!).

(just FYI, she still uses the Canon DSLR for macro shots, but we never carry it around outside anymore. X-E2 and X100S. And we love it!

At the end of the day, as everyone says, it’s gotta fit your shooting style and what you want out of your camera. And whenever I think of the costs… I also remember how priceless any photos and memories are…

    1. Personally I´d probably spend money on glass, rather than on a new body. I own a X-E1 and I am absolutely in love with it.
I was just a bit unhappy about Fuji´s decision to just allow jpegs for “multiple” exposures, as I shoot quite often in this mode and would love to have the option of shooting in RAW, as I always do in any other mode.

      Dear X-Team,
Please reconsider your decision and give us back the RAW multiple exposure function, as I have in my X-E1. And while you´re at it, why not add a few more exposures to the two available?
Also, would a higher ISO be possible while shooting in this mode?

Thank you for your exemplary commitment to producing great photo equipment and actually listening to your customers. I´m looking forward to many more great products from Fujifilm!
      Milen

  3. I am currently a Sony + Nikon user but interested in this Fuji.
I like quiet camera my D800E is too loud and it invites a cop or a paranoid old lady , and I cannot use it much.
so I am looking for a quiet street camera , I have been debating the Sony A7 vs the Fuji X-E2.

    1. Fuji X-E2 is quieter than the SonyA7/A7r, which has a loud shutter sound, from what I’ve heard on Sonyrumors videos.

  4. After owning the X-E1 for 1 year now, I have learned how to bypass many of its shortcomings by using for example manual focus in low light, manual shutter speed instead of minimum shutter speed with auto ISO etc… Of course the X-E2 seems really better from what I read in the reviews but I don’t see a tremendous increase in image quality and what I really miss with my X-E1 is good object tracking capabilities and a good video mode. On these 2 points X-E2 looks like an improvement but not really like a revolution… As an amateur photographer, I’ll stick to the X-E1 and will find another way to sink 1000$ 🙂

  5. no, not for focus, i am always in manual mode anyway, and using AE-L button to auto focus when necessary. I rather keep complaining about the focus in the forum everyday then replace it just for focusing speed.
Incidently i was force from canon when 5D3 was introduced. exactly the same, i was force out of canon when they did not improve IQ, just focusing speed. So i move to fujifilm. Initally i plan to use 5D2 with 70-200L II 2.8 and fujifilm X-E1 as secondly wide prime or wide zoom as secondary body. Then i realise that. I lose a little IQ, but gain by carrying less weight. So basically X-E1 replace 5D2.
if 5D3 were much better in IQ, i would not have move to fujifilm. I would be running 5D3 and 5D2.

I warn you fujifilm, keep making tiny little step in upgrading your camera, and someone will replace you. Totally.

  6. Hi- I am upgrading to a X E 2 – from a X 20 which I bought earlier this year and have been amazed at the results but I now find I need ( want ! ) a system Camera and I am totally into the Fuji X Trans system . So I am selling my expensive and heavy DSLR system and going X Trans with the X E 2 .

  7. I’ve had several days of ‘getting-to-know-you’ shooting with the 1.5lbs X-E2+23mm. I sold my Canon L glass and saved the back for a backup (?) unit.

Comparatively speaking, the X-E2 focus is *fast* and pin sharp. I can imagine the long ordeal this has been for those who’ve invested in earlier models. I thank all of you for giving Fuji feedback and Fuji for seriously listening to make the X series the best it can be.

Despite just getting started, I’m enjoying the camera’s robust-yet-intuitive control interface. With manual aperture control from the lens ring, shutter speed control from a combination of speed and command dials, ISO in Auto (since the upper settings are all still quite usable), I never miss a shot! Just love it. This camera evokes confidence! I can now focus on composition and other variables. I can’t imagine returning to use my Canon, even for backup.

  8. I don’t know if it is worth the upgrade as I never used the X-E1…I have the X-E2 with the 23 1.4 and all I can say is…WOW !

    1. Yes, I’ve shared it back in September 5th here. Available Winter 2013. If the lens will be available in the second half of December (according to Fuji) then late November could be a good time to announce it.

  9. If You have all lenses that you want, at least for now end you have spare money..then why not, I know if I would be in this position then I would grab one black xe2 body. But x-e1 is still great tool and give me a lot of joy to shoot with and reason to go outside

  10. Much as I love the image quality of the X-E1, and its portability, there are some aspects of the camera that really get in my way. For example, shooting landscapes in my neck of the woods pre-dawn gloves are a must. But the camera controls are nigh impossible to operate with gloves on, even the lightest I can sensibly use. I realise that isn’t changed in the X-E2.

Anyone know if the following behaviour is still present in the X-E2? Set the shutter speed dial to T and set the required shutter speed. Say 5 seconds. Camera powers off after pre-set interval. When you wake it up again with a half press shutter speed has reset to default. Have to dial the required shutter speed in every time. So you can have battery saving or you can have persistent shutter speed but you can’t have both. Same with self timer.

Pre dawn I shoot with a white balance of around 6700K and some green compensation dialled in if using an ND filter. Resets after battery change. Have to manually reset it for every saved custom setting in the Q menu. Drives me nuts.

If these quirks are still present in the X-E2 I won’t bother upgrading.

    1. For cold weather I own a pair of wool gloves that do not have fingertips. Been using thise gloves for years to handle my cameras in the cold. I also have a pair of mitten for extreme cold where a flap pulls off the fingers to expose my fingers. Works great for anything that requires the use of fingers to work with buttons or dials, like cameras and phones….

  11. The X-E1 is a little too small for me, which is one of the reasons why I choose the X-Pro 1, so upgrading to an X-E2 hasn’t crossed my mind and is not an option for me. Unfortunately, for me, it seems that most people want even smaller cameras and, thus, perhaps Fuji has abandoned the X-Pro series and will not design anything similar in size to it. In my opinion, the X-Pro is perfect size (small, but not too small)…

Perhaps my only chance is the rumored Fuji full frame MILC due late 2014, as it may be similar in size to the X-Pro. An X-pro 2, however, would generate more lens sales to me, as I would buy the 14mm, 23 mm, and 56mm, as I would commit to the system – currently using a Canon EF 10-22mm for ultrawide, which works very well, but would prefer the Fuji 14mm or 10-24mm…

Any rumours about an X-Pro 2? or, anything on the dimensions and specs of the upcoming weather-sealed camera? Since it is to be released in just over a month from now, surely there must be some information about it…

  12. I went fort the upgrade. It cost me $600 for the upgrade. I purchased the X-E2 kit with zoom and then turned around and sold my X-E1with the new kit zoom for $800

I am very happy with my decision. For me the least talked about feature of the X-E2 is the new implementation on how the EVF works now. It very liberating for me. The EVF finally does not auto adjust. Now its more WYSIWYG style like the Sony EVF. Also stupid stuff like a better on off switch, much stiffer.

  13. X-E2 feature fix:
Face recognition selection should not be a separate menu item (and also not available for Fn).
It should be a 3rd option to single area, multi area focusing. It would be much easier to access if the user can choose a single focus point, multiple focus points or face recognition.
The rationale is that the focus point and face recognition are not orthogonal features, meaning if you choose face recognition the choice you’ve made around single/multi focus point doesn’t make any difference anymore.
Can anyone send that to someone at Fuji who would listen?

Also, I don’t understand why a choice of ANY filter or special effect disables RAW. I love the Fuji in-camera processing but hesitant to use features that cripple after-shooting options.

    Thanks!

    Thanks,
    Amnon

    1. I was wrong!

Here’s how it works now that I tried all the different settings around focus more extensively:

If face detection doesn’t find a face, it falls back on whatever focus mode is selected. If you have single area selected it will use that, if multi area it will use that.

So you can actually achieve greater control with the X-E2, however the fact that it is impossible to turn face detection on and off without going into the menus is still annoying.

Also, if you have single focus area and chose an off-center focus area and turn face detection on and there are no faces (phew…) the center point is chosen at its size is the size you choose which is actually near perfect now that I fully understand the state machine for this.

The remaining issue is still to be able to easily set face detection on or off which means that while it shouldn’t just be a 3rd option mutually exclusive of single and multi AF like I wrote in the original post (shamefully I admit I assumed I fully understood this when I didn’t), it would be great if it would be a 3rd option that’s an on/off toggle alongside the other two options in some way, separated perhaps visually, the point being that I like having the single/multi AF as the top Fn button and I would hope I could access all AF related options through it, i.e. also face detection.

Kudos, Fuji, there is just a small miss here for turning it on or off easily but overall it is very useful.
