I got great news from the developer of the world’s first Nikon G to Sony E-mount (Full Frame) electronic aperture and autofocus adapter. They are going to add full phase detection support on Sony A7rII cameras! He told me it will take some more time to develop that additional feature. So there is yet no official release date although I expect the adapter to be sold within 2015 and branded by Commlite. That company already makes plenty of adapters which you can find for sale on [shoplink 38429 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. This includes the electronic AF adapter for [shoplink 38430 ebay]Canon EF lenses on Sony E-mount (Click here)[/shoplink].
Here is a video showing the autofocus at work. But please keep in mind this video has been taken on an early prototype version without PDAF support. Autofocus will be much faster and much more accurate once the development is finished. I show this video only as a proof that the adapter is real 🙂

No screw drive support in this one, but at least it will AF with the newer lenses.
This adaptor won’t clip bokeh as much as Nikon DSLRs do
And how do Nikon DSLRs clip bokeh ?!
like this: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/34160/clipped-bokeh-circles-at-max-aperture-with-wide-aperture-short-focal-length-len
The link refers to Canon cameras. I saw no mention of Nikon DSLRs. I’ve used a number of Nikon DSLRs (from my first D5100 to the latest D810) and not a single one clipped even when using f/1.4 lenses wide open. I’m not saying they have never clipped; I’m saying I’ve never seen it and I haven’t read about it being an issue online.
I might have been wrong. But doesn’t Nikon have a very similar mirror box?
Yes, Nikon DSLRs have mirror boxes as does Canon, but it doesn’t mean they have the same issues. That logic is flawed. I have two arms and legs, but it doesn’t mean I’m qualified to play professional basketball.
Will this also work with mechanical diapghram linkage or only electronic?
I am guessing that this will have the letest greates AF performance with Nicons’s long lenses?
I would also expect newer adapter versions and firmware up
Barry, How are you getting along with the A Mount 150-600mm on the LA-EA3?
Is it a very usable combination on the A7RII?
It works good with the 150-600 Tammy on the a7rii.
I used the default af zones with continuous af but want to try center spot and eye focus…
Has anyone tried eye autofocus on animals?
I have not tried it on animals, although it does a pretty good job with people on TV (46″ Samsung) which I was quite intrigued by. I will see if I can give it a try on on some cats & dogs. I don’t think that Eye AF is supported on A Mount lenses with the LA-EA3 though, just native lenses & and maybe with the LA=EA4.
That’s the main selling point of this adapter. It can work with the mechanical linkage. Otherwise it would be no different to the F to E adapters already available.
I wonder if they can make it work with other PDAF models, like A6000 and A7II.
But great news, maybe it is possible to do that for A-mount, EF and K-mount this would be really a huge one.
So, we are a couple of months past when this thing was show to exist. When can I send them my money to get one of these.
It’s still just vapor. I don’t know what is gained from a teaser video, unless it’s a kickstarter project.
Can someone please get in touch with the developer and let him know to make the tripod mount Arca-Swiss compatible? It’s a small design change that would make this adapter so much more useful, especially for the bigger lenses.
Strongly supported – please make it Arca Swiss compatible, thanks a lot.
The interesting thing for many of us is if Sony (or a third party) manufacturer can make an A-Mount adapter that will work with on-sensor PDAF. I suspect that’s, engineering wise, a tricky think to do given that there’s a lot of backlash in the drive mechanism and I suspect that they have to work in a hybrid mode with CAF under some circumstances. If somebody could produce a workable version of this I think they’d earn a lot of thanks (not to mention earn some money too).
Note that they’re only claiming OSPDAF support with the A7RII here – which is the one body that now has OSPDAF support for the EA1/EA3.
What would be especially interesting is if someone can figure out OSPDAF for other bodies with EF-mount – The EF mount is 100% electronic and Canon’s lenses work with their version of OSPDAF, so this SHOULD be possible for many USM/STM lenses.
There are hints that DEO Techart might have figured out the recipe with that Saker Falcon Lite – they’re claiming to have an August announcement planned and support AF-C – which requires OSPDAF. (There was a SAR article about this about a month ago).
I’m not sure if OSPDAF with older bodies (A6000 for example) and any lens that has mechanical focus drive is possible.
(Actually the EA1/EA3 only support electronic focus drive too… I wonder if this Nikon adapter will only work with newer lenses that have electronic focus drive.)
Well if the price isn’t too high, it might pay off for me.
Yes, it is awfully large, but you only need one of them. Without a major optical redesign, each E-mount lens must be longer than its Nikon G equivalent to reach back to the short flange. It is as if an adapter were permanently affixed to each E-mount lens.
When will we see some high quality compact E-mount lenses?
But my stuff is older Manfrotto. And they don’t want to make multiple versions of this adapter.
…you’re saying that the mounting bracket on it currently is a Manfrotto type? Cus I’m pretty sure it isn’t. And, you can add a 3/8″ thread on the bottom of an Arca Swiss mount just like on the current mount. I don’t understand your objection.
Ouch, I assumed this would work for a6000. Not so?
They explicitly mention the A7RII – which if you recall, has changes that allow it to use OSPDAF with the LA-EA1/EA3.
Now the EF mount is the first nearly universal mount !
FE
E-mount
Maybe I’m wrong about this, but the video shows the adapter attached to an a6000 which is not FE mount. It’s an E mount, but the a6000 is most definitely a cropped sensor.
No such thing as FE mount really. The mount itself is always E mount, since all E mount lenses work on Sony mirrorless bodies like the a7 and a6000. FE merely means a Full frame lenses or body with an E mount.
Oh look ! A Meme…
So great that they make this adapter.
Ughhhh…! Again, more product releases without field testing beyond lab math.
This adapter, like the Metabones… has those nasty ribs around it. Anyone who’s ever used one knows they bite the right hand knuckles fiercely… because the EMount grips are so shallow and close to the adapter. It hurts. It’s painful to use these things. Put a rubber band around that little devil or buy the Sony LAEA adapters with smooth edges.
Attention designers…! Go out and use the thing for a day in the field before releasing products to public. There is more to good design than what your mapping algorithms reward.
Next version should have removable (and rotating) tripod harness.
E Mount ? A7 ?
Sadly, i laughed more than i should have …
Yep, not perfect yet!
But still very usable, you have to admit, not a fanboy here.
Awesome, great news!
OMG! It’s the great Tony Northrup. I’ve seen practically all your videos. I’ve even seen a few of them from when you were giving programming tips. As a fellow programmer, I salute you. Oh, and I assume you’ll be doing a full video on this adapter when it comes out? I am really looking forward to being able to AF on my A7s and a6000 using my Nikon lenses and this adapter (assuming it supports those ancient devices…).
YEAH! Now its getting fun with all those adapters! Woohoo!
The future will be a totaly modular camera! =D
MAybe it will be more expensive, but.. No brand loyalty!
The ‘tripod harnass’ as you put it, houses the motor for aperture adjustment. It’ not going anywhere.
Then why does LAEA1 not need it? Still has aperture motor to drive spring aperture AMount glass.
Looks like it comes off with four screws.
Looks much like the LA-EA3….
I would be happy if they only create adapter with aperture control. That will be great if it works with most Nikon lenses and most Sony cameras.
phase detect AF with F lenses is definetly great but not all that critical especialy for the owners of the older 4 A7 models.
I agree. Just give me real aperture control on G lenses.
Finally. Time to mount this guy on an A7RII.
Isn’t that an a6000 in the video?
It is working on CDAF mode, no PDAF.
I must be missing the point. The pictured mount is generic, you screw on a mounting plate for arca/swiss, manfrotto or some other head. You’re asking them to make it specifically for arca/swiss, correct?
Yeah you’re missing the point. All you need to do to make it Arca-Swiss compatible is make the edges beveled and the right width. You can still stick a 3/8″ screw in the bottom to mount whatever plate you want, it doesn’t stop you from doing that. By having the mount built into the adapter it makes it much more secure and simple for the large number of people who use Arca-Swiss. Metabones does exactly this, see here: http://www.thephoblographer.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Metabones-Canon-EF-to-Sony-E-Mark-IV-Product-Image-4.jpg
Another nail in the Nikon coffin! Oh yeaaaaahhh….
Will this work on A7II (A7/A7S) as well or just the A7rII?
Edit: Well based on the video and it working on a A6000 I assume yes…
G lenses only I assume, no AF-D lenses needing screwdriver?
How hard should it be to reverse engineer the Nikon adapter for their 1″ system?
Adapters, adapters, adapters..oh my…more and more ADAPTERS…ADAPTERS EVERYWHERE…..HAHAHHA…..TAKING OVER THE WORLD!!!!
