(SR3) Sony A7rII with 36MP sensor, IBIS and faster AF

A7r

After one of my trusted sources told me that Sony was already producing the A7rII things got a bit silent here. I believe Sony will make a “silent” announcement of the camera just like it happened with the A7II. This means no bloggers and almost no photographers will be able to get their hands on the camera in advance. And if you remember the A7II got announced in Japan only at first.

According to a person who was able to get in contact with a person from Sony Japan this is what to expect with the A7rII:

It has same 36Mp sensor and from what I’ve been told it will have EFCS and IBIS and faster AF.

The A7000 (or whatever the final name will be) is coming in mid-June. So let’s hope the A7rII is coming too and will not get any delay like it happened with the A7000. Remember while the A7000 release info should finally be the right one I am yet not(!) sure when the A7rII is coming.

  1. Hi Andrea,

Any rumors on the “A7000’s” 4k ability? Did Sony get the overheating issue fixed?

I cant imagine the A7000 without 4k given how much 4k is a priority today for them.

  2. Andrea, so we have to wait for the A9 or whatever the camera is called to get a +50MP sensor?
I have to admit I’m dissapointed if it has the same senor 🙁

    1. absolute no shutter shock is electronic global shutter, EFCS still have shock but it was after the scan, so yes, no effect on your photo

      1. the shock is not only if the shutter stops its movement, there is also a shock when the shutter starts to move. And it effects your photo – but hopefully way less than A7R.

  3. Waiting, waiting. Patiently. I kinda wanted this for my summer vacation. Not sure if it will happen in time.

    1. I absolutely wanted it for my summer vacation. I have the Batises on preorder for this “hypothetical” can too. Not going to happen it seems.

    2. I actually have money saved up just for the A7r II + lens(es) to have when i go abroad this summer. Expected it to come in mid-may but still waiting… I’m getting quite worried as well since i know that one usually want to wait at least 2 weeks so that other people have time to test everything that might be wrong as well.

  4. After the launch of A7ii,
Everyone expect the A7Rii would do the same.
Use the same 36Mp sensor , just add 5 axis IBIS & EFCS and slightly faster AF.

      1. Yes, I think so.
Because Sony would want to left the fast focus FF in the A9.
and the 50mp sensor in A9R.
and internal 4k video in A9S.
Otherwise, how can they make you upgrade your camera every year? 😛

  5. I really hope it can at least do 9 brackets now and has a timer to fire off the brackets w/o having to hold the shutter button down. a built in intervalometer would also be welcome. Pity it does not have a silent shutter (electronic) Lets hope they fixed the light leak on the lens mount and the shutter shock.

      1. I hear but respectfully disagree. its a huge fail on the part of sony not to offer a built in intervalometer. cheaper cameras like a nikon 1 offer it. so you say theres an app for that, I’ve tried them all, paid for them and none of them do it, the closest one is an app called Time lapse but does not give full control its limiting plus consumes a lot of battery the simplest solution would have been to offer intervalometer features via a firmware which never happened. Sony has a huge software development problem, they suck at it, from the way they offer firmwares that need to be installed thru a convoluted process done to their website offering the apps, truly a pain in da butt. This is something they seriously need to improve on the backend. sony makes great cameras but seriously lack in support and software and software is a selling point they make about the cameras in regards to apps.

    1. Light leak was already fixed in A7ii. Shutter shock will not be an issue if it will have EFCS. 9 brackets and built-in intervalometer is nice, but IMHO can be add by downloadable aps, no?

      1. its been over a year and still no apps!!! there is a pp called bracket pro which is a fail, its not really effective and there is no real interlomater app, the closest is Time lapse which is limiting, its purely for time lapse where as an intervalometer gives 100% control of the exposure settings which the app does not. Sony is very slow and poor about offering good apps, at this point they are more of gimmick. i get better results using a trigger remote with intervalometer. granted thats the simplest solution but a $2k camera that does not offer these simple features seems down right dumb when cheaper cameras offer them. Sony needs to get on the ball and listen to what customers want in regards to software also. Seriously, a $2k camera that does only 3 bracket shots? and no self timer for brackets?? really. i was hoping a firmware upgrade would change that, yet it never came out and most likely sony will never offer it, maybe because it crosses the line with higher cost cameras it makes, idea being u want that buy an A99 i guess.

          1. i’ll give an example. time stacking. if you are taking pictures of a long street heading into downtown, than you most likely want your shutter speed to be long say 20 seconds to capture light trails. The time lapse app will not allow for long shutter instead it wants to take a quick shot thus better suited to common type of time lapse – the app does not allow user to change the shutter speed, you can change how many shots to take and for how long, other settings are like file type, iso and such.

    2. Isn’t there an app for the current A7R already that allows you to go very deep in the bracketing configuration?

    3. Sony unfortunately sucks at software. The only way to get proper firmware updates is to buy a new body. I wished they just supplied us with macro record/playback that one could write and import as simple text files + assign a custom button for something like “macro switch” to be able to quickly switch between macros. With text files etc one could easily create and share macros.

      1. Slightly faster AF will not be enough, it will not be a6000 focus.

A7R second hand prices are now 1200-1000$. Before the new camera. I think that 800-900 will be the price for A7R when the new cam will be announced. The new will be probably like the first, around 2300$.

So paying extra 1500$ +- to get same sensor, with ibis and EFCS?

I don’t think so, not for me. I prefer to add 2000$ and get the A9.

        1. People pay $1700 for A7ii now. Why they do that? Because of IBIS, better body ergonomics, etc. IBIS alone is HUGE.
A9 may come next year or may not come at all, while A7Rii is something to come in June.

        2. EFCS isn’t something they ‘add’, it is a new sensor, like the D810 (assuming this rumor were true that is, afterall there is a post that says ‘99% sure A7R II with 50MP sensor’… this isn’t an announcement.

        3. For you not, some other will pay it. Thats completely ok.
You see, many also upgraded from A7 to A7-II. Whether it is ok enough for a single person (like you or me), is something complety different :).
I personally think IBIS is a huge thing.

    1. 36Mp, IBIS, EFCS, faster AF, better body (A7ii like), better grip, etc. Possibly some other firmware features. If that is not a reason to upgrade – then why are A7 users upgrading to A7II like it’s last day on Earth?

    2. Do you need to upgrade every 18 months? New models are rarely if ever ‘meant’ to be an upgrade for existing users, especially with these short model cycles. It makes the A7R better for prospective buyers.

      1. Well thats true if the A7r is a polished model. its not, it the first version and had a lot to be fixed, first is the focus and second is the loud/hard shutter. otherwise, you are right, this camera is good for few years (for me)

        1. It’s often the case the the second iteration is much more a 100% product. Just look at the Nex 5 vs the 5n and then the 6 and 7 after that.

    3. It’s probably not aimed at (most) A7R owners, but new customers. This was the hallmark of being a modest change, not a major redesign which will take more time.

    1. Almost certainly not. The A7S only just manages a silent shutter (with limitations) when it has only 1/3 of the number of pixels to read in a given time. I think EFCS will be the limit for now. Beyond that would require a major sensor breakthrough.

      1. even at slow rate, it would still be useful for some situations — e.g. timelapse, or adapted lenses too close to sensor

        1. I suppose it might but it loses much of its purpose when it can’t be used for things like street photography.

I don’t understand the point about adapted lenses. What has a silent shutter function got to do with a lens being too close to the sensor? I suppose it’s possible to conceive of a lens which is so close to the surface of the sensor that there is no room for a physical shutter, but I can’t think of a single example of such a lens or alien mount. In any event, the frame of the shutter mechanism is still there, and I don’t like to think of the consequences of pressing the wrong button and accidentally enabling the physical shutter in those circumstances.

          1. Happened to my 5N twice — and to my surprise, the shutter is still alive

          2. I, too, am a bit surprise at that. That must be a fairly extreme case to foul the shutter.

  6. 10 post in and I haven’t seen any lossy raw compression comments yet. Must have got here too early.

    1. If people don’t tell you, you will never notice.
Even people told you, you will hardly find any difference in real life.

    1. I think 50+Mp model is A9 (or whatever name Sony will chose), but it will be a flagship model with all bells and whistles, different body as well. I think Sony is aiming to capture the Pro market share with it. So it will come, but it needs to be polished and tested to deliver finished product. Good things come to those who wait.

  7. Been saying this since day 1 a A7II with a 36mpx sensor. I’m buying , it’s a far bigger upgrade on the A7r than what’s on paper. Far bigger, higher syncs, EFSC . It basically fixes all the niggles of the A7r. Whoever says folks won’t upgrade is thinking completely wrong. It will be a hot seller.

  8. 2015 is fast becoming a ‘lost year’ for e-mount bodies. 3 months ago Sony only needed to release cameras that were competitive with the existing field. Soon, Fuji will have an x-pro-2 ready, and Samsung are famous for rapid refresh so likely they will have an nx1 successor before EOY. Very soon the window ahead of the next gen from other companies will close and Sony will find the A7rII and A6/7xxx competing against market expectations for a new field…..

  9. If this is true, makes me anticipate the A7s II even more~! Really wanted to know when that’ll be out.

  10. It can’t be exactly the same sensor if it’s going to have faster AF, since the old sensor didn’t have PDAF on the chip.

      1. This was much easier to accomplish as the sensor already had PDAF built in. I doubt anyone would be super interested in another contrast only autofocus system as an upgrade. It greatly limits focus speed, continuous autofocus, and video autofocus.

        1. Perhaps. But that would require a sensor redesign. Not sure if Sony would do that for a refresh camera.

That said the A7s has no PDAF points but it can focus down to -4 EV.

  11. Oh yeah, thats in line with what i guess most people were thinking. but why they are taking so long to launch it?

  12. Folks….the A9 is the A99II. Just have to accept that reality. The big 50MP is reserved for A mount. I had a magical vision last night so I know it’s true.

  13. faster will be only on sony brochures (just like the faster a7ii) :). about the 36MP sensor = it’s true. the a7rii has 36MP sensor 🙂 and IBIS = also true 🙂

    1. Not true at all. Almost every review of the A7 II out there have said it felt a bit snappier than the A7.

      1. of course – they are selling those cameras 🙂 you need little help to choose a7ii instead of a7 🙂

        1. I have both ! And while there are a few niggles on the A7 II compared to the A7 (like the flunky dials on the A7 II that suck or the significantly higher weight) the A7 II has noticeably better AF, build quality and features.

    2. I have both. The AF on the A7II is much faster.

A7 also needs the battery grip to use any of the larger lenses. Even with the small lenses the grip is a pain after 10 minutes. A7 II grip is fantastic.

I do miss the fancy dials of the A7. Not sure why Sony opted for these Canikon-style dials.

  14. Pi$$ off Sony.

Make me use toy cams and adapters, extra chargers and weak batteries just to barely keep up with my competition.

They have full elegant flash system.

They have big lens mounts for big lenses.

They have best sensor in best body… THAT YOU GAVE THEM THREE TIMES NOW.

I have thousands invested in top Amount glass and a FF camera that hardly keeps pace with current APSC. Sony says… “Shut up and adapt… We service street level bloggers who influence little league dads”.

Pi$$ off Sony. I cant wait for CaNikon to answer the EVF tech for professional market… and benefit from all the free trickle down PR to educated enthusiasts.

SONY DOESNT WORK FOR THEIR PROS… THEY LITERALLY WORK AGAINST THEM… Then prop up their “Artisans of Imagery” mascotts like cheap stuffed bunnies on a carnival sideline.

Sony killed the refined Minolta ergonomics. Then abandoned… BETRAYED… the Amount loyalists who made it profitable to join the big leagues in the first place. Thats what we get for investing in Amount… an unpredictable psychopathic camera partner who’s only real commitment is to DESTROY faith in them.

    Pi$$ off Sony.

    1. Sony is a poorly run company. They failed in phone, computer, tv….. businesses. The company as a whole is not doing well n more layoffs are still ahead. Camera is doing ok because of recent transition from film to digital, and canon n Nikon are also in deep sh1t for being slow in adapting to new techs. Strong competitors from outside of Japan is needed to get them motivated

    2. Whoa there horsey…..Subjective……much?
You do know that buying from Sony isn’t mandatory…….don’t ya?
“I cant wait for CaNikon to answer the EVF tech”….. Neither can I……..I could do with a good laugh.
Mirror based tech is close to dead for most applications. I’m no expert but if Canikon go properly mirrorless, wouldn’t that require some kind of new mount or at least adapter requirement to use glass from the previous incarnation? This whole scenario seems inevitable.

      1. Subjective? Look the word up. Everything I claim is an objective fact.

You do know that thousands of dollars invested in Amount glass and iISO flash and three decades using Minolta Sony makes it very difficult to just walk away… don’t ya?

And claiming CaNikon had to use same tech as Sony for mirrorless is just like saying CaNikon must use screw drive AF because that’s what Minolta used for the first AF cameras. Regardless of what they use, they certainly don’t have to create a new lens mount that’s less stable for large lenses.

        1. “Pi$$ off Sony” = Subjective (and emotional).

“toy cams” = Subjective (smaller cams is what they are).

“BETRAYED… the A mount” = Subjective (Last time I looked they were still releasing new A mount lenses).

“Sony says… “Shut up and adapt” = Subjective (Sony says – there is a technological sea change and as a technology company we are adapting early to stay ahead of the game).

“DESTROY faith in them” = Subjective (they just don’t happen to support the particular product you own to the level you would like).
In order for your statement to be ‘objective’ you would have to somehow show that you would have made the same exact comments having never owned a single piece of Sony tech. Therefore guaranteeing that no emotion was involved in your rant.

          1. Ah… My feelings, sure, subjective. But people don’t “claim” opinions. They “express’ them.

The claims are all objective… as in factual beyond debate.
            “They” = Canon and Nikon…

They have full elegant flash system.

They have big lens mounts for big lenses.

They have best sensor in best body.

            ______

Another factual claim is… Sony used to have all the same as competition. But they abandoned the pro grade tools for enthusiast grade toys (by comparison).

I don’t think it’s a crime to “express” subjective disappointment that Sony can’t keep pace with the big dogs… Silence is not an option.

  15. Emount adapted with LAEA-4 is NOT equal to a99 or a77. Not even close.

Get the word out. The more we expose this myth, the faster Sony will consider fixing it.

    See here:
    http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/do…

LAEA-4 only works at Low Continuous at 2fps, with less prowess than an a55.
High Speed Continuous just locks focus after first frame.

Forget about getting any long sportsman’s glass to AF as good as Amount does… much less the competition.
    _________

If your results are different, then add your findings to the Dyxum thread listed above.

This is not Emount bashing. But we need to set the record straight based on reality. Consumers should have a clear understanding for what to expect adapting Amount to Emount. Let’s get past the hype. Nothing bad has been said about Emount here. Just the facts. Revealing truth can only help our community, and possibly steer Sony a the direction that helps us all.

  16. This rumor is at least logical: Same upgrade as A7 plus EFCS is definitely welcome. The remaining question for me as A7R owner: Will there be an A9 with higher resolution in near time? Upgrade to a A7RII before knowing about A9 features and pricing 8is not a good idea.

  17. Maybe the new RX camera will be the one to watch for higher resolution sensor 50mp and new features…. At some stage high resolution cameras may become beyond FF, approaching medium format sizes (Like Leica S series, Pentax 645D etc), Fuji rumored to do this. Next high res RX may be last with 35mm FF with following high res model beyond FF….

  18. This feature set is directly responsive to A7R owner’s complaints, so it is likely that this is what we can expect with version II.

  19. Surprise, Surprise. I wonder if it will make it past 64,000 shutter actuation’s before the shutter dies like my old one. $500 repair later….

    1. If it have EFCS, it will double the shutter life time.
My A77ii have over 500k shutter count without problem.

      1. I’d say that’s absolute BS or yours is an outlier, not the norm. A-mount cameras advertise an expected shutter count (150k for A77ii, 200k for A99). They don’t specify anything for E-mount which is why some people think they may not be anywhere near 100k+.

      2. It’s only been out a year, so that means you’re taking over 1000 pictures a day, 2000 if you don’t shoot 7 days a week. How do you find time to edit anything? That’s also about 12.5 TB of disk space in raw, and twice that if you’re backed up. That’s quite a year.

  20. No surprises here. Should be an SR5. Now we can just get some info on the distant future 50+ mp camera

  21. Such a specification is highly credible. Some of the more outlandish speculation has not been that at all. Not exactly revolutionary, but surely do-able.

  22. This is actually getting pretty frustrating to wait 🙁 I’ve been googling a7rii for the past month to nothing. Really wish Sony will do something soon.

  23. As an a7II owner the only reason I see to upgrade for my needs in a couple years is higher resolution like 50+. Let’s see what comes out.

  24. The SR3 specs you mention here today e.g. EFCS, IBIS and faster AF along with the ergo design adapted in the A7MKII indeed make the A7RMKII and intriguing camera to consider. What makes it a slam dunk for me is the new Zeiss 35/1,4 FE and the new Batis lenses. Let’s just hope Sony doesn’t pull a Sony and leave one or other of these features off. Moreover, let’s hope Sony does something completely shocking and adds hi-res sensor shift or 14 bit raw or BOTH!

  25. Well, this would certainly be attractive to those who wanted to try the A7r for the Exmor sensor but were dissuaded by the shutter shock issue. I don’t care a Rattus rattus’ gluteus maximus (rat’s ass) about focusing speed, I have a stable of “old” or otherwise manual focus lenses I want to use for landscape/ macro. It should automatically bracket 5 or 7 or 9 levels when instructed, it is just silly to not have that capacity. Non-lossy compression would be nice, enabling use for low light high contrast photography. My landscape astrophotography (and everything else) camera is currently a Canon 6D, which does a fine job at low light without any pattern noise or artifact, so I suppose I would just keep using the 6D for those low light high contrast situations.

  26. Sony Australia introduced a short instant cashback sale. the A7r is $500 off while all others are $200 off… This has never been the case before (A7r got $200 max like A7, A7II).
Magic 8 Ball says: Getting CLOSER!

  27. If there will be a A7000 and it is weather sealed, what’s the point of it, there’s no weather sealed lenses for it ?? it will make the camera more expensive, what do you think about weather sealing at this level and without adapted lenses ? thanks.

    1. All I want is A77 mk3. I just hope my A65 will live long enough. Only 2 more years left…
A99II is an alternative, but the switch is going to be very expensive. $2k for the camera, + $2k for the SAL2470z

      1. I’ll buy it. I haven’t even touched the A7 since I got the A77II. Add 5 axis…well, I don’t know what else you need. I’m going to pick up the 16-50 again as well.

        1. I’ve been using the 16-50 for 3 years now and it is an awesome lens, but my A65 seems to exhibit a slight focus shift once in a while.
I think it’s the lens, since I notice it the most, when zoomed to 50mm.
I’d have to do some testing first with other lenses.
If it is the lens, then the lens calibration issue is not that easy to fix.

With A77II I love everything about it. But my A65 isn’t dead yet and works great overall. If I can get my hands on A77III in two years, which will have an even better sensor, then why not? A65 will be at the end of it’s useful lifetime at that point, making it a perfect time to buy a camera.

Or I might sell my A65 with the 35/1.8, and use it towards the A77II. But first I have to figure out whether the lens is misaligned after 2 years of usage and a few drops.

Anyone knows of a Sony service center, here in USA? Preferrably in California?

          1. I bought the A77II for 500 bucks brand new. I know, crazy. I bought it from California Integrated Solutions online. Wasn’t sure about the place as it popped up online. I guess they have a warehouse in California. People were really nice- no weird stuff. It was only like a day or two special and it was gone. They said they were having a sale on select merch. I should have bought the A77II and 16-50 for 850…it’s back up to like 1400.00. I couldn’t believe I grabbed it for that.

  28. I’ll pass on this one. They should call it the A7rs, the way Apple tick-tocks their updates. The full number is a big release, the “s” models are just bread crumbs. I hate when companies have the ability for great technology, but hold back so they can update slowly.

    1. A7rs?? I’ll let others call you on the problem with that one.

How do you know Sony, or any company, is holding back on anything? And even if they were, that’s their choice (and their duty to shareholders if it increases profits). You make your choice when you make your purchase.

      1. Sony is not holding back anything. it has failed TV, phone, computer,…. businesses. n camera is doing fine because it’s relatively new since the transition from film to digital, and canon n nikon are also slow in adapting to new techs. Sony cameras could be a lot better but the company is poorly managed n not motivated in being ahead of the others . what’s needed competitions from outside of Japan to jump start camera techs

        1. I’m not saying Sony knows what they’re doing, I’m just saying it’s their choice to make. Just as we are free to choose what products we buy. Wishing for tech which may or may not exist yet is folly.

          1. of course they are just business choices. like nikon got 36mp sony sensor way before sony cameras got it. like american car companies focused on business first and making cars was secondary. unfortunately these type of business choices eventually affect the quality and incentive for innovation

          2. If you think their business choices are effecting the quality of their products or you don’t like what they are doing, you are free to go somewhere else. Nothing you post on here will ever change anything.

          3. neither is ur blind loyalty. Sony is not loyal to u nor ur needs. Best to keep options open

          4. I have no loyalty to any manufacturer. I do use Nikon and Sony gear, because they suit my particular needs.

I wouldn’t expect Sony, or any company, to be ‘loyal’ to me. As long as they honour their guarantee (and perhaps a few years service availability) that’s all I expect. To expect more is naive.

          1. Yeah, it has. Along with Panasonic, Sony has had a strong presence in pro broadcast video since the late ’70’s.

          2. You’re right – Sony has been a leader in motion picture, broadcast & video cameras for decades.

            There I fixed it.

    2. If you are the CEO of the company you will do the same thing.
It is the best way to get max. profit from the expensive development cost.
Without direct competitor, squeeze the technology slowly like what Cankon usually did.

      1. Thank you for pointing out that these companies actually have to survive and pay their employees if we want to continue getting the good stuff from them. Overall I’d say the pace of advancement has been very fast…if anything too fast for the market to digest.

Also, those people who accuse companies of deliberately holding back on new tech to update more slowly and milk profts…have no idea of what it takes to engineer new products and bring them to the market.

These cameras are not trivial but are engineering marvels. It’s not like Sony or Canon or Nikon can just wave a magic wand and conjure up a shiny new camera that is a quantum leap above the past. It takes time and money and even these companies don’t have unlimited amounts of resources. Yet too many people on these forums write as if these tech companies can create breakthrough products overnight.

    3. This is a highly substantial update if true – better body design, 5 axis IBIS, any AF improvement is appreciated with this body, EFCS.

When the a7rIII comes out with just a new sensor – would that be a “big” release for you?

A camera is more than a sensor. For decades, cameras were sold sensorless.

      1. I hear this saying since we had 3MP sensors in cameras ;). Sorry, but the sensor determines everyting together with the image processor in any digital camera. Rest is periphery – might be more important for some and less for others. I also consider the A7R II more as an incremental stepping stone update before the real update with +50 MP FF sensor is being released. I have no trouble waiting and using my current A7R til then.

    4. i think for me, its a sensor upgrade plus it has to have features i really need, like shooting 9 brackets, a timer to fire off brackets w/o holding button down. built in intervalometer. these are common features in other high end consumer cameras, nothing new here except sony omits them. downloading apps, wifi, gps and all that jazz are gimmicks to me. i want the meat and potatoes to be beefed up with good standard run of the mill features. even a nikon 1 has a built intervalometer.

  29. The one nice thing about these false rumors of an imminent new camera release is that it caused quite a dip in A7ii prices about a month ago. I was able to get a used A7ii, which I had wanted, for ~$1,200. Prices have bounced back since then but the combination of rumors of a new camera and a price drop on new cameras created a nice perfect storm for people that wanted to get last generation’s model.

    1. Lol that was because sony employees were getting 50% off on all e mount cameras and lenses a month ago and selling them on eBay and cl. Rumors had nothing to do with it.

  30. Just curious – did they hold a gun to your head or just kidnap you family to make you use a Sony camera?

    1. They ransomed my huge investment in Amount lenses and flash gear, applied it to toy Emount, then left me holding the bag for great loss if I switch to more professional company.

That earns me the right to speak reality.

Now you can mock me, and shoot the messenger that speaks truth against Sony false promises… But I dare you… I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU… to actually comment upon the real issues I raise in the thread above.

You can’t, so you won’t do anything more than mock me for speaking truth. I know the answer… “Shut up an adapt”.

    2. Dude, it’s not like Sony/Minolta never had the pro benefits listed above. The problem is that they are slowly, torturously taking them away and expecting the few pro loyalists they actually have to accept weak adapters and batteries as a suitable replacement.

We’re LOSING hard won refinements so YOU can have your happy plastic pocket cam that will never outgrow its original intended vision because of some very fundamental flaws at the initial design phase.

      1. They have to take them away, To slowly add them one by one to get to where A-Mount already was and make ALOT of money along the way.
People are so gullible paying FE lens prices for their new Hipster Mirrorless camera. I mean tell me, What Image did the Mirror Ever keep you from capturing anyway?

  31. Any rumors on am improved adapter? That migbt get me more interested? I realize that is an anathe to some but it is important to me

    1. I second this comment. An upgrade to the LA-EA4 adapter (A77II AF system) is needed for the merging of the two systems which would benefit everyone in the Sony A, E, FE world. I know a lot of people have discounted the use of A mount lenses on a A7 series camera, but I think it has a lot to do with it not being an up to date AF system.

  32. yeah this is another oddity, after all this time and for near $2k still no 14bit lossless?? i thought sony was trying to compete with other brands, which offer 14bit, ahem nikon d800

  33. Any hints on the rx100 MK 4 yet? I’m waiting for 4k in a tiny package.. Hopefully 30min rec time with 4k. Common guys, give me something to stop me buying 3x lx100 !

  34. Who needs it? This kind of crap always comes up from people who will never ever see difference between 8 bit and 12 bit even.

    1. Well, I need it because I like to shoot the sky at night and then raise exposure 5 stops in post to detect UFOs or secret laser cannon satellites.

  35. Yup, I owned an A7r for a year, it was in some ways great, in other ways it felt like a bit of a beta product. I fully intend to buy the ii when it arrives, assuming it fixes the niggles.

    1. Go to Canon then. They have a bulky brick with 50Mp that are barely better in real world tests vs D800 and A7R. And their high ISO is no where good.

  36. ” It has same 36Mp sensor and from what I’ve been told it will have EFCS and IBIS and faster AF.”

Meaning the AF and shooting speed still going to be nowhere near enough for sports, it will be bigger and heavier than A7r and IBIS will be useless if you have OIS in your lenses (like 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 90 macro, 85 Batis).

And it will not be able to compete even with 50mpix Canons in its own slow niche.

    1. I’m wondering, are you using a 50 mpix Canon for Sports???
The rest of the world is using 1Dx, D4s, D7000, 7DII, etc, etc. And neither of those cameras are above 24 mpix. Now if you were to complain about A7II, or A6000, then i’d understand, but why in the world would you need such resolution for Sports?

      1. Why would you wander it? Any camera is better than A7r (and future A7rII) for sports, but 5DR is better for landscapes, and A7r is just as good for landscapes, while being lighter and cheaper. So there is nothing A7rII is going to be better than anything else with these specs.
        Now is it clear?

        1. A7r has atrocious AF, so while A7r is good only for landscape, A7rII might actually be alright for casual shooting too. On top of that, just because it has the same pixel count, doesnt mean the sensor is the same. Noise characteristics could have been improved.
In addition, IBIS supplemens OIS, so I wouldnt count it out completely. And then there is an entire A-Mount lens range, that could be used with IBIS.
And then there is a better grip too.

          1. “A7r has atrocious AF, so while A7r is good only for landscape, A7rII might actually be alright for casual shooting too.”

I would not hope so. The sensor has readout rate which is just too slow for any reasonable CDAF.

          2. But thats a readout rate at full res. You dont need that much for EVF, Metering or CDAF.

          3. If you use zone readout, you pretty much DO need to read out the whole sensor.
And no matter how much you need, the camera which is able to read 30 full frames per second can autofocus 6 times faster than a camera which only able to read 5. Even if you read only 1/100 of the sensor in each case.

        2. If someone gave me $15000 and asked me to pick my camera of choice for landscapes I would choose the Pentax 645Z first, D810 second, A7r third then a whole list of Nikon, Sony and Pentax cameras BUT the 5DR will be waaay down the list. Who cares about 50 MP when its DR is so poor. I use the 5D mk 3 on a regular basis and its DR is worse than my old A55 crop sensor.

        3. How about a tilt-shift Canon 11-24mm adapter courtesy of Hartblei (it’s still being engineered, but should be similar to their Nikon 14-24 TS adapter)? Or skip the adapter, just slap any Canon lens (or Nikon lens) on an Actus electronic-pass-through adapter and have full view camera movements? Can’t do that with a 5DSR or a 645Z. Of course, “small” goes out the window at that point.

    2. Yeah, go try Sports with Canons 50Mp 🙂 And then try high ISO – both suck. What’s worse – in real world comparison side to side with D810 and A7R – Canon’s 50Mp was barely better in resolution (if any).

Besides, IBIS helps on high shutter speeds too – like 1/640 even. Done and tested already. Furthermore, IBIS even helps and complements to your OIS in lenses. ANd finally, such lenses like FE35 or FE28 or FE55 will benefit from IBIS, let alone billion of legacy glass and even all A-mount lenses.

      1. The Canon 5Ds series will feature an improved version of the very excellent AF in the 5d mark iii. It will shoot at a max of 5fps FF.

The AF in the 5d iii is great for sports, action, etc…and so I would expect the same to be true of the 5Ds/r, just a bit slower. And with 50 Mp there will be ample opportunity to crop for wildlife and sports shots.

So yes I expect the 5Ds/r to work well for any movement type of photography…it wouldn’t be first choice given the 1DX, etc…but it will still work very well.

        1. Yes but with the same processor as well, you will hit the buffer after those 5 frames… And still have to put-up with poor latitude.

        2. That all sounds great until you realise you’re still shooting with the same old Canon sensor technology and the second you raise the shadows by just a tiny amount the image quality goes to shot.

Also I’m 100% totally completely sure this will be used as a wildlife/sports camera, you are soooo right on that point. Yeah, honestly it’s totally the right specs for that. You so clever.

    3. lol A7 series for sport? with what? 70-200mm f4? anyone who is even considering Sony A7 for sport in the near future must be out their mind! doesn’t matter how good their body became, it still won’t happened until proper lens developed for this purpose. IBIS provides MUCH higher stability than OIS and work in conjunction stabilized lens. If all reviews are right, Canons 50mp is more of half baked product, high noise / low DR. Expect a mk2 coming out in 1 year.

  37. If you are sorry it is only because the notion in baseless. The “rest” is not periphery. The 5 axis IBIS is a major engineering achievement and will help immensely with capturing 36mp of photo. I believe that the A7II received a new processor considering it is faster thus this will be in the a7rII.

If everything beyond the sensor has been improved and IBIS integrated in the new body, then this camera would be expanding the potential of the 36mp sensor and will make for a far more substantial upgrade over an identical a7r with a 50mp sensor.

    1. couldn’t have put it better!!! I just hope the autofocus is noticeably better and this camera will be good for me for a long time

  38. Who cares about aps-c anymore? It’s dead like A-mount. FE is the priority now. Adapt or die!

  39. I actually thought the a7r II would come in mid may. A problem is that it needs to get released, reviewed and teared apart so that one know about potential pitfalls. That process takes at least 2 weeks… but at least people will probably test Everything that was bad with the A7r. 🙂

    1. Only Sony can give you a cheap plastic Mount along with a so called “pro service”. That outshines the competition 🙂

    2. Nope, it has same perfect E-mount as A7ii. But it won’t have shitty DR like Canon sensors have, so that’s already makes it much better.

  40. Indeedwithoyt a good adapter from Sony, I hope M etabones or other manufacturers will offered an alternative with electronic contacts this time to get efficient A to E adapter

  41. Indeed without a good adapter from Sony, I hope M etabones or other manufacturers will offered an alternative with electronic contacts this time to get efficient A to E adapter

  42. Indeed without a good adapter from Sony, I hope M etabones or other manufacturers will offered an alternative with electric contacts this time to get efficient A to E adapter

  43. The fact that arguments and debates are constantly going back and forth between who or what camera produces better results and generally only gets decided by scientific comparisons rather than visually shows that whilst sensors do make a difference it isn’t the be all and end all.
To me, having a camera that handles well and makes my life easier is worth an upgrade. Unless the sensor does something noticeably different then it isn’t an upgrade selling point.

  44. No the build quality IS better. There is more magnesium alloy in the build in the A7 II and the mount has less flex with heavier lenses too.

The A7 has a bit of polycarbonate and that gets scratched easily so its not that hard.

That said I like the lighter weight of the A7. I find the A7 II a bit too heavy on long shoots.

  45. I haven’t shot much video at all. And even for the few clips I did shoot I used pure MF . 🙁

  46. Yes, it will be made fully in plastic this time. I can understand that. The lens mount complainers will be there anyway. 😛

  47. Who cares about DR when you need to bracket exposure for real DR anyway? If you have a sunlit scene with 20EV of DR, whether you camera has 12 or 14EV does not matter much. And if you have a dull overcast, both are more than adequate.

    1. Are you a landscape photographer ? Or are you just posting what you read online ?

I shoot a lot of landscapes and earlier with my A700 I had to shoot a lot of bracketed photos to get the DR needed to cover the scene. However with my A55 and new A7 I find I don’t need bracketing nearly as much. So I am enjoying shooting much more than before.

And bracketing doesn’t always work especially if you are shooting long exposures. There is a good reason many Canon landscape photographers are using their lenses on a Sony A7r. Its just noticeably better for landscape work.

  48. I have the A7r, and definitely plan to upgrade to this camera; it is a major upgrade. The question is what to do with my A7r then; I hope they have some type of trade-in plan.
