The X-T1 Firmware ver. 4.0 rumor history

First let’s make a bit of order in the Super Firmware ver.4.0 for X-T1 rumor:

1) Back in April I told you here that a new Firmware with improved AF for X-T1 will come in Mid-May (probably 11th of May). – NEW SOURCE
2) An anonymous source confirmed here that Fuji will release a new firmware, that will make the X-T1 a “Completely New Camera“. Note: this source didn’t say anything about the release date of this firmware, just that it will come – ANONYMOUS SOURCE

Don’t Worry, Be Happy, The Firmware will come!

Recently Fujifilm released just a minor update (FW ver. 3.11 for tethered shooting).

Some X-T1 shooters were a bit worried, that my sources might have been wrong. But I really want to assure you that the FW 4.0 will come. Please do NOT (!!!) listen to those folks, who keep up saying (as usual) that I’m just deliberately spreading BS…. to those folks: I’m really sorry to disappoint you (again & again), but the firmware WILL come. Just relax, take it easy and accept this fact 😉 … any maybe check out also the huge 2015 rumor overview and fact check.

The problem is just to know when exactly it will be released & which features it will possibly bring (a part from a faster AF speed). Please give me a bit of time to investigate about it… and in the meantime, here is what a NEW SOURCE just told us:

A) Fuji will announce the new Firmware in Mid-May (probably the 11th)
B) The Firmware will be available for download in June (this means, more or less when the X-T10 will be available on the market) – NOTE: last minutes delay can happen, see X100 firmware.

So don’t be afraid, dear X-T1 shooters, you’ll get plenty of Fuji’s Kaizen Love soon… and let’s cross fingers that there will be some nice little updates also for some other X-series cameras.

enjoy your weekend,

      1. Look unfair a bit. Fuji goes wrong if means T1 as flagman and E2 as a class below. Sure, some body features give extra E2 but as for me I don’t like SLR body format and is a fan of a rangefinder one. That’s why I’ll never buy T-series cam but desire to upgrade a body with next E-series or even Pro. On this point Fuji should continue FW support for E2 on the same level as T1 but HW differences. For ex., I wonder why we still don’t have viewfinder rotation on E2?

        1. Because compared to the XT1, an XE2 has a lo-res viewfinder with all sorts of optical artifacts. More interesting question would be, why we don’t have an electronic shutter on XE2?…

          1. We will probably never know but I suspect the X-E2 didn’t sell very well. I remember when it came out how many people said they wouldn’t upgrade from the E1 because it wasn’t a real upgrade to them. Perhaps they stayed that opinion. Then a few months later the far better T1 introduced and took a lot of sales/upgrades that would possibly have gone to the E2.

          2. E2 is an excellent backup companion for the T1, that’s why I had to upgrade my E1 (which had a different sensor).

It seems that a lot of design and (anti)Kaizen decisions lately came straight from the sales/marketing department. I have nothing against the idea in general, but Fuji desperately needs to hire someone who really understands marketing. Or at least stop hiring Canikon rejects for a change.

          3. thats exactly what happened in my case. i had my money in my hand set on an E2 when i heard fuji was announcing a new camera so i decided to wait and see what it was. It was the XT1 and ultimately thats what i decided on.

          4. How do resolution and artifacts (which ones BTW?) factor in to implementing VF rotation?

          5. An eyepiece of the EVF has its own image circle, with image quality gradually deteriorating as we get farther away from the center. If we stretch an info display along the longer end of our rectangular frame, it will be closer to the center than if we stretch it along the short end. It seems that XT1’s eyepiece has much less coma at the extremities than the XE series. Probably it’s been designed with rotating display in mind. Judging by how fuzzy outer edges of XE’s EVF are (in comparison to XT1), I think it’s safe to conclude that rotating display on XE series will be barely readable in portrait orientation.

          6. I see what you mean. I don’t own an X-T1 to compare it to, but never found my X-E2’s EVF to be optically challenged. Ignorance is bliss. 🙂

          7. An optically perfect eyepiece will add at least $300, if not $500, to the price. That’s why even XT1’s eyepiece is a compromise to some degree.

Back in the [slide] film era, we used to judge the image quality on a light table with a loupe. There were $5 loupes, then there were $700 loupes… 🙂

          8. Question is if we need our EVFs to be absolutely perfect. I don’t MF and thus don’t need the EVF to judge critical focus. As long as the IQ of the actual images is up to snuff, I don’t mind a few aberrations in my EVF as the price for increased usability. Heck, they could even include an option to turn off rotation for those who are bothered by the sub-par optics.

          9. Personally, I use adapted MF glass only for super macro (read – bellows). However, for the vast majority of CSC shooters (at least here in the former COMBLOC countries), retrofitting the “vintage” glass is crucial. They call XF lenses all sorts of names (“pore finder” is the least offensive) and prefer the “dreamy” rendering of the old Helioses and Jupiters. Whatever. To make a long story short – yes, great many people are using EVF to judge the IQ and as a focus aid.

        2. There are many like you X-E1/X-E2 users, including me, who do not like X-T1 (also because of X-TransII) and will never buy it even with hard Fujifilm pushing for moving. It’s simple: shooting with RF type cam is complately different experience to SLR mirrorless small body with centered EVF. I tried X-T1 and it’s terrible experience when you care for fast framing – your nose is on thumb and LCD which disturb you all time and can ruin your concentration for things that happens around you because it’s always irritate you. X-T1 is great camera for slow photography, but not for dynamic reportage where every split second counts and you need concentration. I look forward for X-Pro2, want to see what it offers for $1700 body only, but I wait also for new (also RF type cams) Sony A6100/7000 and Panasonic GX-8 (look aho amazing features has GX-7 that you do not see in Fuji and Sony).

          1. XT-1 is great only for slow work? Hardly. The rangefinder form factor is no better nor worse than the DSLR form factor. Just different for different preferences. I have both and I prefer the XT-1 by far.

          2. I explaned why, different shooting experience using both in dynamic fast shots – one with centered EVF and second with side EVF, were both have same length. X-T1 retards shooting because of EVF placed halfway the body that makes framing – with nose on the thumb and LCD – not comfortable and annoying. This issue is reported quite often for small mirrorless with centered EVF like in DSLR.

        3. The E2 is “a class below”. The X-E2 and X-T10—and arguably the X100 line—are the mid-range and the X-T1 and X-Pro1 are the top range of Fuji cameras. The E2 and T1 are not and have never been equals. If you want a looks-like-a-rangefinder body that is equal to the X-T1, what you’re talking about is the X-Pro1. (And soon, presumably, the X-Pro2.) The X-E2 update you want to bring it in line with the X-T1? That’s called the X-Pro2. The X-T1 that is in line with the X-E2? That’s the X-T10. The X-E2 doesn’t get all of the same stuff the X-T1 (and X-Pro2) gets because it’s not on the same level as the X-T1.

  1. I’ll be shooting some action next weekend, was looking forward for the AF improvement by then but hey, better late than never.

  2. The ultimate X-T1 KITT 🙂

Seems likely the new AF is designed for both the X-T10 and X-T1. Same sensor with phase detect points and most likely the same processor, so that’s basically copy and paste. Sounds like a win-win to me. Advancing the system, their name, and winning over new users. That X-E2 will have to drop in price if true, or get an update as well.

  3. I’m getting used to it now, but I am disappointed by the lack of features granted to the XE-2. I, apparently incorrectly, viewed it as a twin to the XT-1. I chose my camera deliberately for the form factor, as I prefer the rangefinder style to the SLR. While I still love my Fuji stuff, I don’t think I’d consider an XE-3, should one be produced, given how the XT line is clearly the favorite son. There might be good reasons for it, but it’s still disappointing.
