X-T10 Manual by FujiRumors :: Chapter 1 – Controls & Dials Explained!

 photo low_zpsc1xsqafu.jpg

Where is the pop-up flash? What are those thin rings under the big dials for? ISO dial or DRIVE Dial? Well, here are some first instructions on how to use the Fujifilm X-T10 😉

– There is a pop-up flash. Do you see the trapezoid framed in red? That’s the part that pops-out when you enable flash.
– You enable the flash with a switch under the Drive Dial.
– There is a switch to enable Full Auto (scene recognition mode) under the Shutter Dial.
– Drive Dial (enable CH, CL, BKT, Panorama…)
– Two different kit options: X-T10 with XC 16-50 or XF 18-55.

  1. It’s amazing how a few subtle changes make a great-looking camera (X-T1) look like crap toy (X-T10).

  2. The UI seems interesting. However, any doubts I had regarding my aquisition of a X-T1 just over a month ago are now blown away 😉

    1. Personally, I’m waiting for some real life samples before making any conclusion about its beauty. For now I also prefer the X-T1… although I don’t think it looks that bad as other fellow X-shooters think. But as the famous saying goes: de gustibus non est disputandum.

      1. Have a XE2 and XT1 I don’t need more 16 MP cameras. I do rarely need more MP so will op for that in the next one.

    2. That’s not really anything to hesitate about, is it? If you were considering the X-T1 (rather than X-E2 or X-M1), then indeed you are already outside of the target group for this X-T10.

      1. Wait…X-E2? I disagree with you in placing the X-E2 with the X-M1 and considering the X-E2 to be in the same class as the XT-10. In fact, I would argue that the XT-1 is EASIER to use than the X-E2.

        1. mmm tough call. I’d say the X-T1 is more “pro” than the E2, which means that anyone already choosing the T1 rather than the E2 shouldn’t even think about the T10…
Very hypothetical discussion, especially since I am saving for the Pro2 :-))

          1. I agree that X-T1 has features that allow it to meet the needs of pros, but in terms of use, the X-T1 and X-E2 are largely identical in terms of one major thing: No PASM dial.

I guess what I am trying to argue is that someone who is considering the X-E2 should ALSO not consider the X-T10. Frankly, even more so. The rangefinder position of the X-E2 viewfinder is such that the typical dSLR shooter would be initially befuddled by its location.

    1. Indeed, I do see it now. But is does look like the Fujifilm logo will pop up as well when you look a that rounded seam on the front.
Can’t see the same seam on the silver version though.

  3. The more I see it, the more I like it. And yes I already have an X-T1 (black) so I’m not a buyer but can appreciate this, especially in the silver… It’s classic Fujica all over.

    1. If that K-01 had a EVF I would have kept mine. Ugly and all it was a fine camera. 🙂

    2. actually i find the K-O1 beautiful !!! but without EVF it’s a FLOP … the X-T10 is damn ugly to my eyes …. i hope fuji won’t discontinue the XE series … but it seems they will !!!

  4. I had the X-M1 and where very happy with it. It was actually quite faster than my X-Pro1, though I missed the ViewFinder on several occasions. But this camera is sexy, pair it with an 27mm and the X100 series will get a fair competitor.

    1. Well i wouldn’t say competitor. The X100(s/t) is not really for the entry level user it is twice as advanced. For starters there is no ‘switch to enable Full Auto’. And that’s exactly how i got my X100 for cheaps, the first owners didn’t know where to start with that thing! Not to mention .. everything else.

  5. gimme gimme gimme body-only price !! , im visiting FR-page about 10 times a day waiting to see the price 🙂

  6. For those who think that it is silly to talk about the way something looks, I do think you are being disingenuous. We all care about the way something looks or we would not be photographers! True, the look of a camera says nothing about how it functions as a photo making tool, but we all know that how something looks has a significant effect on our perception of functionality, ability, and value. I think it looks cheap and takes away from the Fuji “look.” I think this is a misstep for Fuji and I want Fuji to succeed and keep making great lenses and cameras. I predict we will look back at the X-T10 as a failure. If I am wrong, I will return to this forum and state how wrong I was.

The reason it looks bad is that the camera appears to have a small head and no neck. Compare the “pentaprisms” of the X-T1 and X-T10 – the smaller X-T10 pentaprism has sunk into the body of the camera. This is accentuated by the thicker than normal top plate. It will look even worse with a larger lens adorning its front.

Cheetah with no neck = X-T10

    1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I understand you don’t like it but, there will be plenty out there that do.

It doesn’t mean it’s a design disaster, it just means this camera is not for you.

I find your reaction to a camera you haven’t seen in real life never mind held quite amusing…. Maybe you should contact their design department, they might have a job for you 😉

      1. Well…I am not so sure that the “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” retort works here. The X-T10 lacks the quirkiness of the Pentax mirrorless offerings and also lacks the sophistication of the X-T1. While I DO understand that this is my opinion, I really think the average low end consumer would be more attracted to the smooth, modern polycarbonate bodies offered by Canikon. After all, those buyers are more impacted by brand name than anything else. Don’t forget, many of the current passionate Fuji fans (like me) are rooted in the manual cameras from the 1970s. That is why we dig the look of the Fujis. Balance, shape, and good design are really important to us. We like the Fujis because we all used manual aperture rings and shutter speed dials. This body breaks all the rules of industrial design. It would be one thing if you were catering to a group of off-beat, quirky folks who wanted something different looking, but the price and features of this body are distinctly targeting the masses!

        1. “Well…I am not so sure” Well, I’m afraid you don’t speak for everyone, even though you seem to be a self-appointed Governor of “Industrial Design”.

I hate to break it to you but you’re one voice with one opinion (which you are entitled to) but the way you go on is so over dramatic it makes you look almost troll like (I know, I should feed the troll, I promise I’ll stop)

Seriously though, going back over many years (early 90’s) I’ve been part of many design / creative crits (As an art director / illustrator before becoming a full time photographer) and the one thing I’ve learned, design is subjective, you may please many but not all and what one person hates another loves. You just aim for your intended market (in this case, not you) and please them. But I guess you’ll say Fuji Marketing got it wrong as well.

To be honest, I’m happy with my X-T1’s and I’m not interested in this camera myself, but I’m not so arrogant to believe that means no one else will like it and as such will be a complete flop.

At the very least, wait until you’ve actually seen / held it before condemning it to room 101

          1. Fine…I see I have touched a nerve so I will back down. Just saying that I predict a flop and if I am wrong, I promise to come right back here and state that I was wrong. Aren’t these forums all about opinion and speculation? I am not sure why you are making this so personal. I’ll stop responding and writing and go somewhere else where I am free to get into interesting conversations and arguments without being made to feel like I am being a jerk. Note that I have not said anything in any of my posts that is mean spirited, degrading, or personal. I’m out folks.

          2. No nerve touched 🙂 It’s just surprising when people are quick to declare a “Competitor Slayer” or “Staggering Flop” with absolute clarity on the strength of a couple of a couple of very rough low resolution images. No one would expect, or, be waiting for an apology in a years time when it’s success (or lack of) will be known.

I guess it’s just the culture, “hype things up and knock em down” that grates with me…. to that end, I apologise if you caught the brunt of that irritation!

    2. Haha, i agree the looks are a little getting used to.
But a failure? Are you completely serious?

Also, the reason that it may appear cheap looking to some is most likely because these are digital renderings, they are not photographs. Meaning they are too clean. Making them (black, and ‘silver’ especially) appear a little plasticy or even fake.

      1. I too think these are just poor renderings or even an early mockup of the real thing. Sure it will appear much better when introduced live.

        1. There were plenty of people who liked the Ford Edsel but it still was a design disaster.

      2. I am serious. I may be proven wrong, but I am serious. Fujifilm’s best decision was to make cameras that did not cater to the masses of low end Nikon and Canon owners with their PASM modes. I am not saying that this will bring down the company, but I do expect it to fail in terms of generating a following. There is simply too much competition in the low end market with mobile phones dominating that segment. You need to do something really special to get the average iPhone photographer to pay for a camera body and lens.

So an unattractive camera that costs the same as a “name brand” low end Nikon or Canon will not generate a lot of excitement from consumers.

    3. I agree about have no neck due to the high top plate/low pentaprism. I think it will sell well if priced around the xe2 price. It looks a lot better than the Olympus em10 either way

  7. I have to say that I’m a little disappointed with this. Scene modes? Really? For me the whole appeal of the Fuji X cameras is the simplicity of the UI with A settings on both the shutter speed and aperture dials – no scene modes needed! Still I’m hoping that an affordable body only option is possible.

  8. And if we were just talking about good design as part of the field of art and industrial design, the X-T10 would come out ahead because it follows more conventional patterns than does the X-T1, which isn’t exactly ugly, but which attempts to bridge too many disparate peaks in a single body.

Simple? Yes. Plain? Yes. But neither mean bad. Too often ‘design’ is conflated with ‘styling’ as if design wasn’t the structure upon which style is erected, or if form had nothing to do with function.

It is too early to decide how many functions Fujifilm have buggered with redundant controls, but a swift glance at both cameras does show the X-T10 the camera with the ostensibly simpler, more direct user interface.

Styling elements have been pared. Poor designs such as horribly nested metering/drive control rings have been resized. Locks have been loosed. These are important design elements that have nothing to do with physical styling.

And no, a good design does not a good, or universally loved styling ensure. Nothing accounts for personal preference but personal preference.

You dislike the X-T10. I, on the other hand, enjoy its paring down of redundant elements and hope this trend will continue down the line.

  9. There is one user at Fujistas (spanish Fuji forum) saying that this image is not the definitive XT10. He says the final body looks nicer

      1. Audi A7 first promotion photos were awful, it looks much much better in real life

        1. Real life is probably better… as with the A7… but, well, the A7 is really ugly. Look at it compared to my beloved X-E2 😉

      2. Yes and it’s better the “prism housing” shows it can open to release the flash.
Considering this model may target a different market segment, I see no reason for such excitemment and comparisons to upper models in the product line.
Even for people that may buy it as a backup it will show shortcuts that one may accept or not, but that’s it.
It may bring some improvements but those will sooner or later show in other models too.

    1. I’m hoping you’re right. Although the design has grown on me, it’s not quite right though.

  10. The “shutter speed dial” in the black version does not look like a fuji shutter speed dial to me. Is it, or isn’t it? X-M1 style UI or X-T1 style UI? Or (yikes) a brand new UI?

      1. And yet people will congratulate them on improving design while people like me will chide them on not going for good/uniform from the beginning, catching flack from fans that say: they just started, give them time.

It’s not like Fujifilm invented the camera, or even the digital camera. If they can’t settle on a uniform UI from day one, and certainly three years down the line, it is a failure in strategic design.

        1. Considering what Apple’s doing to their UI in OS X, I would agree with you completely. Switching between machines running 10.10 and 10.9 is more jarring than switching between OS X and Linux w/KDE.

  11. It’s been x30’d. Is this the new budget aesthetic for cheaper cameras? It’s a bit of a munster.

  12. the most important meaning of the x-t10 is that the XE2 will get no kaizen update as it may kill its sales… that’s relay annoying!

      1. it disappoints me every time i realize that again… its abit unfair, why should x-t1 which is the same hardware like the xe2 get all the attention from fuji ?

        1. The xe2 does cost roughly 2/3rds that of an xt1 – actually closer to 50% when on sale for essentially the same camera internally. If the xt10 receives lots of up dates then I suppose that would be unfair, unless it sells really well and Fuji could use that as the justification.

    1. With its full auto mode and its price tag, the X-T10 looks more like an X-A and X-M replacement… It is very far from the X-E spirit.

  13. I shoot with an X-E2 and love it! It’s a brilliant piece of equipment and gorgeous to look at. Hate to say this but the X-T10 is a bit of a dog. I’m going to patiently wait for the X-Pro2?

      1. Hahaha….love dogs…perhaps I should have called it a pig. So far I think it is the least attractive camera in the X product line. It reminds me of a Canon EX Auto. I feel like Fuji should be focusing its resources on the X-pro2 which is way over due and not a cheaper version of the XT1 which will cannibalize the sales of the X-E2. Just my opinion.

  14. Hopefully Fuji is not going to disappoint us. Body only prize between $599-799 could be nicer 🙂
