We finally know how much the Hasselblad H5D-50c will cost. The camera featuring Sony’s first 44x33mm medium format CMOS sensor is available for preorder at BHphoto (Click here) for $27,500.00 only! With 80mm kit lens you pay exactly $30,000 (Click here to see the BH page).
Today Hasselblad officially launched the full specs. The PDF file can be downloaded here: http://www.hasselblad.com/media/4728475/uk_h5d-50c_datasheet_en.pdf.
These are the characteristics of the Sony sensor:
The Hasselblad H5D-50c features a brand new CMOS sensor measuring 43.8 × 32.9mm – much larger than the largest 35mm DSLR sensors. The basic ISO rating is from ISO 100 to ISO 6400 and the high sensitivity of the new sensor enables completely new application areas for all professional medium format photographers. It is now totally possible to capture superb quality images even at high ISO settings making low light photography easy. This high sensitivity and fast capture speed together with the high dynamic range of 14 stops makes this a true all-round camera that can be used for almost any type of photography.
The H5D-50c is built around a high speed architecture that can capture full resolution images at the rate of 1.5 captures per second, working either mobile or tethered to a computer. The combination of these features makes the H5D-50c the natural choice for the professional photographer wanting to work with the ultimate in image quality whether working in the studio with controlled lighting or on location.

Wow that’s expensive. I hope the MF Pentax is less expensive when launches.
The Pentax is $10,000
10K is reasonable 28k is stupid
Now that’s how a camera should look~!!!
Look at that signature sexy joystick-like grip. It looks like you can launch a nuclear ICBM with that thing~XD
Hasselblad: great for photography and thr budding world leader wannabe. Haha
Thats actually pretty damn cheap for a new generation Hassy
where is the best price in Europe? i want few of this.
The headline is incorrect. Phase One is already shipping this sensor. The Hasselblad is not the first camera to ship with the Sony 50MP cropped Medium format sensor.
Phase One is shipping????? Sure?
They are, people are taking delivery everyday right now here in the USA.
Why does my response to you keep disappearing. I am linking just one of many examples of people receiving their Phase One IQ250 s over the last week.
Hi! I don’t know why but it seems disqus is putting comments with link inside on hold. Sorry, I still have to learn how this works 🙂
In the USA they are shipping! People are taking delivery on a daily basis.
Here is just one example:

For some reason my post keeps disappearing.

And now, minutes later all of my posts that were not apearing show up. Sorry for the duplicates but something was happening where I would post and it would not go into the feed.
I realize that I’m about to get hammered by pro photographers, but don’t specs look unimpressive to anyone else as well?
I mean, while ISO range is OK, and a only a center cross point AF sensor is OK for 90% of uses, 1/800 max shutter speed? 1.5 FPS? And its marketed as a camera that is good for almost all types of photography?
1/800 will be a real bummer in daylight, where one will be forced to stop down the lens, sometimes quite a bit…
1.5 FPS would be a limitation with sports and flash photography. Where a few shots have to be taken in rapid succession.
I’m sure there are a few other limitations, that are not as apparent at first glance.
It’s medium format. you are comparing 135 format DSLRs to Medium Format camera specs. For those that shoot MF, these specs are more or less on par with the competition.
I’m sure the image quality will be very impressive and this camera is meant primarily for studio use, the leaf type electronic shutter flash sync’s at all speeds.
I don’t doubt that its awesome for studio use. But it is my understanding that its marketed at multiple uses. Here are quotes:
“This high sensitivity and fast capture speed together with the high dynamic range of 14 stops makes this a true all-round camera that can be used for almost any type of photography.”
“ultimate in image quality whether working in the studio with controlled lighting or on location.”
“On Location” and “any type of photography” is what got my attention.
oh and “all around” as well.
I would bet most of these camera’s will be mounted on a tripod in the studio and rarely moved. Perhaps a bit of marketing hype, you will never see a sports photographer using this camera and landscape photographers will use neutral density filters to pad down the light intensity outdoors on a bright day. It is what it is, if you have no professional use for a camera like this it won’t make sense to you feature or price wise.
It says almost any not every use and I agree. You can use it for sports if you are very skilled and have the patience but it would not be ideal for that.
MF lenses don’t really go lower than F3.5, so I dont see how the 1/800 is too much of a problem
I have 1.8 90mm mammiya 645 and 300mm 2.8, so you are wrong.
However, I am fully agree that 1/800 is enough to cover most of shots I guess, I don’t understand when you are using 8000/1 shoot, unless you are shooting on the sun with a open aperture. I don’t even use more than 400/1 most of my photography…..
I just wish there will be a 4k CAM FOR MIDIUM FORMAT ONE DAY, THAT’S WHAT I hope only….
These kind of cameras are used in studio or on location for model shots ands such so the specs look fine for what it is. I would never get one unless I hit the lotto and I can’t understand why it cost so damn much compared to a FF, Although it does give a look that FF can’t give.
Stan is right.
Marketing wording is poorly chosen.
Specs of this camera, and what it is as a mf format, we can use this camera only in certain ways and certain places for only certain type of photography.
Only.
Lol, sports? This is a studio camera. It does only a few things, but what it does it does very well. It’s a specialized tool for high end output. The 1dx and d4 are specialized for sports & action.
Can you read? I did say “As It Is Advertized”. What is so LOL about it? Laugh at Hasselblad marketing department for advertizing, and I quote, an “all-around” camera.
As you and the marketing say: “can be used for almost any type of photography.”
You know sports / action is not remotely included in that almost.
This is really just 4 NEX-7’s strapped together and Habble-fied, right? 😉
lol 🙂
I’ll take three.
I don’t know how I’m going to break it to my wife that this IS that new car to replace her rusty old Honda.
Admin, I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place to comment, but would you please post any rumor (even sr2) about a ff alpha with the format of the nex 7? Not speaking about tri-navi (which I don’t care about) but the small package with flat top and vf on the corner. pleeeeaaaaaaaaaaase
I have it from deep sources that Sony is listening to the overwhelming customer complaints, and is basically almost finished on an innovative re-design of the A7/A7R that will move the EVF away from the conventional center hump, and into the corner… on the far right. And on the front.
I find that hard to believe, the viewfinder located directly above the lens is ideal for tracking moving objects. You can sight moving objects by raising your eye slightly above the view finder using the lens barrel to aim and track then drop down slightly to the viewfinder to compose and shoot.
WHOOOOSSHH!!!
“on the far right and on the front” got it… But early on, some were actually complaining about the viewfinder location as ridiculous as that sounds.
My comment was all about Federico’s exhortation for “any rumor (even SR2)”.
Leaving the entire hump vs. humpless tempest-in-a-short-bus-teapot well alone… it was merely a demonstration to show the (laughable) value of weak rumors, and to demonstrate the necessity of SAR’s vetting.
Hm… It looks like idea is coming from Pentax. To bring good Sony’s CMOS sensor to MF.
And Hasselblad with Phase One jumped in the train later.
44×33 – it’s Pentax 645d format. Hasselblad and PhaseOne use bigger ones.
Come on big boys, bring 100MP 54×40!
PS. Well, at least this is something worthy from Hasselblad after Lunar&Co
Actually the order so far is as follow:
1. Hasselblad Announced (Jan 21)
2. Phase One Announced (Jan 24)
4. Pentax Announced (Feb 5)
5. Phase One started shipment (Feb 25)
The idea isn’t coming from Pentax. Sony worked with and marketed the 50mm sensor to most of the major MF camera producers. All of the MF manufacturers have been wanting a CMOS based sensor to apease the part of their market asking for a sensor capable of higher ISO and long exposures.
Well, sounds pretty logical.
It looks you are following the topic. Have you heard any rumours about Nikon MF? It partners with Sony for sensors, working on MF camera and delays with D4x. May be there is a Nikon 50MP 44×33 DSLR later this year?
Nikon won’t get into this. The market is just not big enough.
Develop a completely new line of lenses (and as a consequence neglect the other lens lines) to sell and at most an additional 10 000 to 20 000 cameras?
Can’t wait to see some sample images from this beast.
1/800 shutter speed? That is the fastest?
umm thats pretty fast for a leaf shutter. It can also flash sync FULLY with out any tricks at 1/800th
Still no 56 x 56 mm sensor for that kind of money? Come on, it’s 2014!
The Hasselblad H5D-50c features a brand new CMOS sensor measuring
43.8 × 32.9mm – much larger than the largest 35mm DSLR sensors.
Yeah, right. This sensor isn’t even 1.6 times as big as a 24×36 sensor. 56 x 56, the classic MF, is roughly 3.6 times that size.
1.7 times
56×56 was used in the analogue era.
But I agree that the Sony MF sensor is obviously smaller than the Dalsa (54×40) which is afaik the biggest digital MF sensor to date.
Good move Hasselblad. Just don’t forget that the future is mirrorless.
There is no doubt that Hasselblad under its former Chairman and CEO Larrry Hanssen made itself into the laughingstock of the industry. Hasselblad is now under new leadership and will hopefully get back to what they do best; high end, medium format photography for a few studios and professionals.
Have they released that $10000 rebadged A7R yet? 😉
Cool. I’ll just wait for the 54mp A9R. Not going back to medium format or DSLRs.
Damn now i will hesitate between Sony A6000 or further mirrorless APS-c or FF camera and this 27000$ camera 😉
Thanks, You dreamt about it, Hasselblad made it…. LOL
No ISO 50????!!!!
I’m jumping ship and will buy the Phase One 😉
Is this an EVF or optical viewfinder?
First EVF Medium Format wins big.
Optical. The MF viewfinder on most cameras has a really large view, much larger than any DSLR, SLT, or EVF based camera. If you’ve never used one you wuld be shocked when you look through the viewfinder as to how big the viewfinder image is. The folks that buy these today would not want an EVF. That’s not to say that it wouldn’t change in the future as EVF’s get to much higher resolution but not now, maybe not for 5+ years.
I’m liking the new styling, it will blend well when Hasselblad takes over A-mount at the end of the transition. Oops, did I say something we all didn’t know was coming anyway, why else would they be doing Sony releases under agreement? I just hope the spend is worth it after they spin off the division this year.
Dan
You really put in the effort to troll this story.
I think the only thing we need to transition away from is Dan.
I agree. Anyone interested in the new Hasselblad HVII camera? It will probably take all your Hasselblad HV lenses too!
Dan
I like the way it looks, but two of these cameras will almost pay for a Tesla S.
I find these MF camera look like an heavy Toy camera…. The fat design reminds me the camera and other electronic gears we are giving to children at XMas. My grandfather has a 60x40mm Voïgtlander camera and it’s as small as Sony Nex7. I guess in the 21st century we could try to build compact MF camera…. No?
I think this camera may beat RED Epic Dragon DxOMark
Should be another great choice. The crop factor will be around 1.3 making the 28MM a 36MM and so on,
so… this is like the same pixel size than a FF 24mp…
where the hell its the advantage?
its like with the news FF 36mp, same pixel size than an APSC 16mp
i think every size sensor now its racing to get pixel size of smartphones, really a shame
in the past we get better pictures from bigger sensors, in the future when all sensors get a pixel size of an smartphone all pictures will look the same, same ugly i mean.
So the Sony version will cost $6,000?
