  1. Does anyone have an update when those five Samyang / Rokinon / Bower lenses will be available for the e-mount?

I have my mind set on that 85mm…

    1. You can basically get ANY samyang 85 and adapt it, there will be no difference, it’s all manual anyway. So get the cheapest you can find.

        1. well, even if you are right about the newbie-part, which i wouldn’t want to assume, what’s wrong with learning? Not everyone is born with a perfect catalogue of skills, you know?

      1. And it’s actually better since you will be able to use the same lens on any mirrorless mount (or its intended mount).

        Not to mention cheaper.

  2. The RX10 is the sleeper in the recent SONY offerings. F/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range making this cam very useful. There must be a good reason for the high price. If the IQ is good, then it is worth the money. Can’t wait to see a detailed review.

  3. This looks like a Sony DSLR, which is to say it looks freaking ugly (Sony make the ugliest DSLR’s by far). The V2 of the RX10 should be in an A7 style body which is quite the looker.

    1. I’d love a little clarity on your reasons why you think the Sony DSLR designs are the ugliest ‘by far’. I’m an industrial designer by profession and I’m always curious for people to explain their thoughts. Usually I get vague answers but you sound like you have some specific issues.

personally I looked at most of the Canikon models before picking the A77 and eventually the A99. I prefer the look and the ergonomics of the Sony cameras compared to the others. But even looking at the different cameras, I don’t see radical aesthetic differences between the brands (when compariing A99, 5D, D800 models). They all vary slightly between grips, and shoulder designs but still follow a traditional layout. If anything I find the D800 to be a little boxy and a touch tall aesthetically. I do like the slightly more rounded edges on the sony, whereas the Nikon’s usually look like they are begging for a vertical grip attachment to complete the look – especially at the bottom of the grip area where its very square (obviously to blend with the grip, but without it looks a little abrupt)

      1. I’m Nikon D800E shooter. The Canon 5Diii is the best looking FF DSLR imo. 1Dx is nice to. Sony DSLR’s look like they have been placed in a hot oven and they have melted a little. Also the viewfinder look really out of proportion to the rest of the camera. The viewfinder should be raised like the Nikon/Canon’s even if it’s not technically necessary. They could just take advantage of the extra room and add a medium format size viewfinder. This would offer a tangible benefit and make the camera more pleasing to use. If Sony made a A mount similar to the a7r that would solve their ‘ugliness’ issues.

    2. Looks isn’t everything, but it does sell. With an 1″ sensor, I am not sure what kind of IQ we can expect. I for one won’t pay $1200 for that ugly pile of plastics. If not aps-c sensor, at least keep the RX100 Look.

      1. im not spending $1200 unless the camera is literally the size of the sensor and i’m controlling it with my tongue

      2. you’d know if you look at reports of RX100II. I own taht camera and can confirm that colors and dynamic range of the 1″ sensor are outstanding and on par with my NEX-7. Only on high ISO the NEX might be slightly better, but that’s to expect.

Ugly pile of plastic? Are you talking about Canon or Nikon now?

        1. No, he’s talking about Sony walkman maker rx camera being ugly. Canon And Nikon make the most sophisticated pro cameras in the world, made of magnesium with state of the art tech. that’s why all pros and most every other person uses them . But I guess you knnow better than everyone else, right?

          1. @roots – if you consider sony to just be a walkman maker, and you consider canon and nikon to be the only ones using magnesium with state of the art tech incorporated, and you say that all the pros and most everyone else uses them, then why on earth would you be on SAR?

At this point, you don’t sound too open minded to anything sony is going to make, and have your mind set on canikon as your choices – nothing wrong with that – but canon watch might be a better site for you to frequent 😉

        2. Because I used to have the maxxum system and Sony is doing the same crap minolta was doing. Get over your biased one track sony mind, sony products esp their cameras have no direction, no stability and ARE in the position they deserve to be, which is without any meaningful new customers, while pissing their existing users off by making rebadged new crap after crap. Buying sony is like buying a Ford.

          1. Roots – you sound like you need a hug, man. haha. I’ve shot with some Canon and Nikon gear that my friends have. All great cameras but I still prefer my Sony rigs -each brand has its pros and cons. I personally really like EVF and would have a hard time going back to OVF. I also like that sony is trying new things. I’m not saying they are perfect or that they instill extreme stability – as seen on SAR when there’s speculation about the death of A-mount seemingly every other month – but I just enjoy shooting in the here and now. Do I question new lens purchases with Sony – of course. I don’t want to get stuck in a dead end system, but if that happens I’ll try to roll with the punches, sell my gear, and switch – but again, I’m just having fun shooting and I love coming to SAR to get excited about new things. I don’t really think the RX10 is something to get upset about, especially if you’ve already moved on from the brand.

btw – I do own a ford. I got my first explorer in 1993 and had it for 11 years. Got my next explorer in 2004 and it’s still running strong. Never had any major problems with either of them, and they were (and are) very reliable. So I guess you’re right – buying a sony is like buying a ford – I’m enjoying both

    3. Sony has the only modern looking DSLR on the market. Canons look and feels cheap and chunky compared to it. Nikons DSLR design is still from the 90s, nothing modern at all, you could call it plain ugly (nothing to do with it’s quality and performance though).

  4. Apparently, few seem to realize that this is the best offer of the year, far better than A7 and EM-1.Versatile to the bone, obsoletes all superzoom craps, excellent lens, best video out of all still cameras, tough consruction, meant to be in use for 10 years +.

  5. I really like the looks of this camera. I think it’s lines are very nice. It’s got good shape but still a tight profile. The body doesn’t extend too far in any direction. Look on amazon at the top down view and you can see just how much of this camera is dominated by the super zoom lens it’s using. At constant 2.8 that’s pretty cool. That lens size in proportion to the body reminds me of my Sony F707 which had the swivel barrel lens and the nex-style body.

having an A99, I am still tempted by this camera if the video quality could approach that of the GH2 or GH3 or T3i. I’m not sure of the recording bit rates but hopefully the output is sharp. I find my a99 to be a little mushy in video.

  6. Yawn…for $100 more I have my feature-rich interchangeable-lens Olympus E-M1 with the LARGER 43 sensor, class-leading 5-axis IBIS, weather-sealed body, lightning fast AF, etc., etc. And I can use my many excellent m43 and 43 lenses with it.

But you guys go ahead and fool yourselves and fawn all over this second rate camera.

    1. For 100 bucks more you can get yourself a camera with a sensor over two times smaller than FF, then shoot pictures and wonder why when you enlarge the print it’s so damn noisy and coarse. Then you try to sell the em1 and wonder why you can’t find any buyers for it and then realize no one but you was foolish enough to sink money into a company known for BS tech and abandoning its camera lines..ala om, 43.

  7. Take a closer look at the RX10 camera and you’ll see there’s really nothing out like it, and it should serve certain shooters exceedingly well. As for price, add up an Olympus or a Panasonic with 12-35mm f/2.8 AND 35-100 f/2.8 lenses (24-200mm eq) and the RX10 with a Zeiss 24-200 constant 2.8 seems very reasonable.

The biggest reason to be excited about this camera is that it does not line-skip to down-sample the 1080p video. It should capture gorgeous video, and early samples look great–better than the A7 & A7r. (For those who don’t know, EVERY other DSLR or other stills camera out there uses line skipping to capture video, causing a range of image degrading artifacts.) The entire sensor on the RX10 is captured during video at 60p, and no other camera out is doing this, to my knowledge.

Other video friendly features include selectable clicked/de-clicked manual aperture ring; clean HDMI out; live manual audio control; headphone out.

How many other cameras come close to all of this in one package?

    …

It’ll also be a great alternative for times when I don’t want to, or can’t, carry my big heavy bag of lenses around, but still want quality.

  8. RX10 is a sleeper alright “zzzzzz”
Nobody is going to pay £1000 for a camera when you can buy lots of DSLR’s for a lot less, and use the cash to get some decent glass.

    Another oddball overpriced Sony product.

    1. “Nobody is going to pay £1000 for a camera when you can buy lots of DSLR’s for a lot less, and use the cash to get some decent glass.”

That you see no value does not mean that none exists. That you don’t know anyone that has a use for this camera does not mean that a use does not exist.

Whether enough people exist that see the value is yet to be answered. However, for those that do, I expect they will enjoy the hell out of this “little” powerhouse.
