EISA (Click here) released the name of the EISA award winners. Sony won three prices in the following categories:
Best European SLR Camera: Sony A57
Best European Advanced Compact Camera: Sony RX100.
Best European Travel Camera: Sony HX20v
P.S.: RX100 still sells like hotcakes at Amazon US (ranking here) and Amazon DE (ranking here).

Nx20 is a surprise.
X1 pro, professional? why?
Om-d and a57 well deserved.
X1 pro -> because there is PRO in its name.
BOOM!
Also remember that they make a category for every possible camera so everyone wins! This is likely because they are all sponsors and are sponsoring the whole show!
Seriously, though, who can believe these are legit awards when I could even invent a category for…
Best Camera To Feed An Elephant or Shark And Come out Alive to Show the Journey: Winner – GoPro
Hardly. While there is overlap between quite a few categories, name one direct competitor of the A57 released this year, that won anything (D3200, 650D, K30 for example).
Actually, they do make new categories as and when deemed necessary by the panel. It’s in their rules.
If you look at the prize list for 2011 and compare it to this years list, it becomes obvious that if they can’t decide between two models, they make a new category so both can be winners. Next year some categories may not exist.
European Camera – Nikon D800
European SLR Camera – Sony α SLT-A57
European Advanced SLR Camera – Canon EOS 5D Mark III
European Professional Camera – Nikon D4
So, the EOS 5D Mk III is not professional, and the Nikon D800 is neither an SLR, nor is it advanced?
I’ve always been fairly impressed with Minolta’s good track record – winning the Camera of the year prize at least once every three years, somes two consecutive years, a feat no other manufacturer accomplished. But winning by being put in a category all of one’s own and leaving room for the runners up in other categories to win a prize undermines the “authority” of such prizes.
In the old days, there would have been one prize for SLRs – later one each for pro and amateur SLRs. Now there are four, three of them being awarded to high-end models.
penis in my mouth everywhere until sony gives me my damn a99
LOL.
While I do agree the EISA seems to have a category for nearly everything, there is no denying that the RX100 is an amazing camera. I have one, (I also have the A77, NEX7, A55 and NEXF3) and swear it takes better pictures than the APS-C cameras I have. Annoyingly, the RX100 has features left out of the NEX series like a mode dial, selective min/max ISO selection and multiframe noise suppression + IBIS. As a result i’ll be selling the NEX7 (unless a much needed feature packed firmware from sony arrives) and await the A9x with baited breath.
If your RX100 is taking better pictures than your A77, NEX7, A55 and NEXF3, then it isn’t the equipment that is the problem…
What shall I say … last year they’ve awarded the Pentax 645D as “European Professional Camera” … ignoring the “Hasselblad H4D-200MS”
And what’s about the NEX-7? Sony’s professional Compact System Camera beat’s everythingI’ve tested (especially in terms of image quality and versatility) … no award, last year “Panasonic LUMIX DMC-G3” and this year “Olympus OM-D E-M5″… Those should beat the NEX7, really?
In my point of view EISA Awards stands for nothing but crap!
No NEX this year.
Good work Alpha team for A57 🙂
European Compact Camera >> OM-D E-M5
European Advanced Compact Camera >> NX20
European Professional Compact Camera >> X-Pro 1
THIS IS TOTAL CRAP…how the NX20 is more advanced than E-M5, and how the X-Pro 1 is more Professional or even Professional? E-M5 deserves the top spot as Professional compared to X-Pro 1 but even it doesn’t get in at all as a Professional. To me, the EISA Awards is total crap.
+1
Rooru, as I read it, the OM-D won the top prize for the best compact system camera. The Samsung and the Fuji won sub-awards, among compact system cameras. (I agree that the Fuji is hardly professional.
The same with the DSLR. The D800 won the overall best award as the best camera (of any sort) of the year. The A57 wont the top dslr prize, top dslr camera of the year. The 5D and the D4 won sub awards.
Almost exactly except SLR Camera award is also a sub award (For budget DSLRs I imagine.) under the best camera of the year, Nikon D800.
Yes the RX100 is actually a new step in camera evolution, the first compact digital camera that doesn’t suck. I constantly get asked for camera purchase recommendations from non-pros and enthusiast beginners and this camera made simple for me for recommending a non DSLR stills camera.
It’s funny that G1x got Compact Camera
but rx100 got Advanced Compact Camera
