It looks like the August 28th announcement is mainly a NEX event. The A mount lenses and the A99 could be announced two weeks later in mid September. Here is a wrap up of all info we have from our trusted sources. This is what Sony will announce:
NEX-5R: Looks almost exactly like the [shoplink 8452]NEX-5n[/shoplink] and has the flip screen from the NEX-F3. It has a completely newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor with Phase Detection AF pixels. It has WiFi connectivity and APP support. You can surf on Internet with it. Price around $700 with kit lens.
NEX-6: It’s a mini [shoplink 8454]NEX-7[/shoplink] with integrated viewfinder. Compared to the NEX’7 it has an EVF with less resolution and a newly designed 16 Megapixel APS-C sensor (with Phase AF pixels?). It has WiFi connectivity. Price between the NEX-5R and NEX-7 (NEX-7 is currently priced at $1200 at Amazon so my guess is around $950 and $1000).
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6: It is a pancake zoom. One “external” source (means not from SAR) says this is actually a non pancake f/2.8 constant aperture zoom.
Sony 11-18 f/4.0: UPDATE: It is not a pancake zoom!
Sony 35mm f/1.8: Fast non expensive prime lens as big as the Sigma 30mm lens.

One more time first!
nice one!!
congrats 🙂
One saddo congratulating another saddo.
…and now there are four of us…
LOL, don’t let your jealousy control you….bwahahahaha!!!!!!
I don’t think 11-18mm/4 even possible as pancake on NEX. If Sony made it, their lens technology is really ahead of everybody else (as the lens of RX100 already suggests).
Not lens tech but sensor. Because 11-18 is quite close to the NEX flange distance. In this case lens can be tiny indeed. The only problem is angle of coincidence.
But it is a big problem, especially for a lens intended for landscapes. You don’t want your IQ precipitously falling in the corners.
As I said this problem must be solved at the sensor level. Once solved, this will let us to make small but great WAs (across the frame sharpness, zero distortion).
So what means “non expensive” for the 35mm prime ? “as big as the Sigma 30mm lens” sounds great for such a fast lens ! I would love to see the NEX-6 for 899 … would be a deal-breaker sony could rule the market with.
>sounds great for such a fast lens ! I
it doesn’t. Samsung 30/2 is nearly as fast as f/1.8, but twice smaller than Sigma 30/2.8
Maybe … but on the one hand there is a difference between 1.8 and 2.0 and on the other hand: it is a very adequate size, especially compared to other sony lenses like the 30mm 3.5, the 18-55mm or the 50mm 1.8 !
Small lenses without OSS? Not interesting.
No Samyang lenses are provided with AF (yet).
.
Based on the rumored specs I’ll probably buy the 16-50mm (either version) and the 35mm.
This is assuming proper quality and a decent price.
I am going to pre-order all 3 NEX lenses as soon as they are available! Finally, the NEX system is getting the small lenses it deserves!!!!!!
Who said they are small?
Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 should be pancake. Expect it will be paired also as kit. Then may be I will buy into NEX system.
Will the E16-50 be designated a G series? I don’t think we have seen many new G series lenses in either mount besides the long telephotos.
I agree with most on the pricing of NEX-6. It should not cost more than the A65.
Can you not read? It says so in the rumour.
“Can you not read? It says so in the rumour”
It also said:
“One “external” source (means not from SAR) says this is actually a non pancake f/2.8 constant aperture zoom”
We all hope that its a pancake this time 😉
Yes, and it also says that there’s a rumour it’s a pancake?
849-899 would be a nice price range for the nex-6
If the lenses are good, I would buy them all. But they have to be good at least from centre to edges (we need a performance akin to the adapted 16-50mm for the A mount for the E 16-50) and then they will be successful. Also, the 35mm better be at least as good as the 50mm 1.8.
Um? So APP support in NEX-5R, but not NEX-6?
I hope that for 35 mm “lens as big as sigma 30/2.8” means a few mm shorter…
It is a larger apertures, longer focal length and expected to be designed for good optical performance. Not sure why you would expect it to be smaller than the Sigma. Smaller than the Zeiss 24mm yes, but the Sigma probably not.
Because the Sigma was designed for Foveon sensor. Sony doesn’t have to do so.
Hey, i’m wondering if there will be other lens made by Carl Zeiss, like 50mm … it would be so awesome. I’ve bought the 24mm one and i don’t use my other 18-55mm now.
It would be nice to make portraits! Well i know that sony’s lens is quite good but i would prefer to invest into a CZ one ^^
I would prefer CZ to make 85/1.8 (or1.4) before they make a 50mm .
Well, I am pretty sure I remember Sony has said that there will be more Zeiss-lenses, for both NEX and Alpha.
.
Hmm, so Nex-5R sells with contract only, 20$ internet-flat 😀
Admin, any hints of a VG-30 camcorder? All has been quiet on the VG front, while Sony seems to have an endless supply of new Nex camera bodies.
No way the 11-18/4 lens is a pancake, if its that fast/wide – its not a small lens … neither is a 35/1.8, as 35’s are typically larger than 50’s of the same aperture – I would bet its no smaller than the 30mm macro.
Andrea no word yet wheter the app means android compatibility or not? If they don’t embrace that world it could turn out to be a stupid failure. Moreover, they’re already doing the right things on Xperia phones line. It would be a mess if they throw in some unneeded proprietary OS.
Since Sony recently bought out Ericssons half of their jointly owned Sony Ericsson, which had a line of Android cell phones, I think we can expect Android support. If not right from the start, then at least via FW upgrades later.

An 11-18mm aps-c fixed f/4 compact lens ? Fixed f/4 will have to be as big, if not bigger, than the 18-55 for a reasonable standard. f/4-5.6 seems more likely ? Plus Sony/Minolta/etc have a history of 11-18mm lens f/4-5.6. Examples :
http://www.kurtmunger.com/konica_minolta_af_dt_11_18mm_f_4_5___5_6__reviewid27.html

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tamron/1118.htm
16-50 f/3.5-5.6 is a retractable compact lens ? “Consumer” grade ? Pancake is a prime design but I guess this means it collapses when not in use ? Might be good…. please make it a winner Sony !
( Andrea – please look up pancake and examples of pancakes. The Panny 14-42 x lens is a retractable ultra-compact; not a pancake; I’m quoting Panasonic. There are lots of examples of pancakes and they are all fixed focal length, not zooms. )
Why would it have to be big?
A collapsible design is always doable. I am always amazed with some compacts when the lens comes out, how long compared to the body depth it can be.
Same thing here. Look at the Oly 9-18 and imagine it in a collapsible design like their compact 18-55. There you have it.
I guess that’s what we will get.
I think that if all these lenses come into existence I might actually sell off what remains of my APS-C A-mount gear and buy a nex5/6, 11-18, 16-50, 35 prime and 55-210. Everything I might ever need for travel photography, and it will probably fit into a very small bag. Although come to think, an A55 with the original sigma 18-200 and 50/1.7 is very hard to beat, size-wise.
B’
It’s possible to make it small – something of a similar width to length (1:1 ratio) when collapsed – like the Oly lens. But the wide angle of view combined with a zoom and fixed aperture makes that unlikely, unless it is poorly corrected and then quality suffers. The Oly is f/4-5.6 as I’m sure you know.
Actually, I suspect this 11-18 will suffer the same problems as the current 16mm. Wait and see though – I live in hope. 😉
Besides anything else, Sony showed a load of prototype lenses over a year ago. They have released all of these except the g standard and wa zooms. If you look at those lenses, none of them are really compact.
http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/nex-c3-specs-and-future-nex-lenses/
That’s not to say that they haven’t changed their mind/roadmap – and of course, they could have worked wonders and made them internal zoom too, so they really might be “pancake” sized and not collapsible/retractable. Again, really unlikely but we can hope eh ?
Unfortunately, until this site starts to discriminate in meaning between retractable and pancake and compact, we’re left to make guesses.
i allready own the 18-55 E-mount I really dont see why iw ould want to buy the 16-50 since they`re both f3,5/5.6 unless i`m missing an advantage besides the reduced size
If it realy G-class lens the difference will be visable.
Will buy NEX-6 and hope there is a kit with the 35mm f/1.8…That’s going to be my new walkaround camera. Even if the 35mm f/1.8 sold separately is priced at 350USD I will buy it for sure.
So no image stab for 35mm f/1.8 ??
So is the 25-1.8 going to be with OSS like de 50?
If it have Sigma size? I think no. 🙁
I would buy a NEX-6 if I didn’t already have a NEX-7.
Shame the new lenses will not be coming until September+, I (and I’m sure many others) wanted to have them for their summer holidays.
Depends on the quality! Likely they have already sold me on the 35 1.8 if it’s as good as the A-mount version.
The only thing that would make me hesitate on the 16-50 is the image quality and what the G standard zoom will be. I only need one standard zoom, and soon there will be three. I prioritize quality over size and would be willing to pay up to $700 for the upcoming G. If it is 2.8 then that would seal the deal and I might pay even more for it… but I guess we won’t know what the specs on the G will be before the 16-50 is available.
I’m guessing the 16-50 pancake (or collapsible) will be $400-$450. If quality is as good or better than the 18-55 it will be a winner. If it is not as good, I wouldn’t be interested, but it will still be very popular.
When and where FF NEX ?!
Never and nowhere.
Wouldn’t be that sure about this, especially since you seem to forget the filmmakers market. After Nikon & Canon failed here, nevertheless they could sell lots of their own already existing full frame lenses, Sony might come up with something like a NEX-36 having a full frame sensor inside, which is only reading APS-C when a standard NEX lens is attached, but opening new horizons for all those attaching full frame lenses to their NEX already. Wouldn’t be a big problem for Sony to flood the market with something like a full frame http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagiccinemacamera/
As far as filmmakers go – Sony has already beat Blackmagic to the market with the FS100/700 and the F3, pick your price point and you get far more features, bigger sensor, better ISO range, audio and so on…
Its full frame focus is clearly on the long awaited A900 replacement. No way Sony lets the wind out of that sail by also introducing a FF Nex. The FF market is much smaller than APS-c, why would Sony spend years on the new FF SLT and undercut themselves with a FF Nex? Its not the way they operate. Its not going to happen.
I doubt you understood the Blackmagic concept and obviously you’re having no idea about the full frame market: http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-nex-goes-full-frame/
Man I really hope sony pulls out the stops soon. As much as I want to stay in the NEX camp the lure of the weather sealed and body stabilised Olympus OM-D paired with the weather sealed Panasonic/Leica 24-70mm F2.8 (35mm equivalent) is too strong…must resist!!
+1. Very ready to sell my NEX and go for that 12-35.
2.8 equivalent in light entering , but 5.6 in shallow depth of field.
true, same conversion also applies to APS-C vs FF, so NEX isn’t true F2.8 DOF either.
I’m thinking that f/2,8 has other advantages – more light for the AF system and evf etc, and better low light capability – m43 is about a stop worse than aps-c for high iso, so f/2.8 compnsates for this.
Crucially though, the lens is optically excellent – far better than anything for NEX in a 24-70 zoom range at present.
If I want blurred b’ground style portraits, the Oly 45 f/1.8 will do the job.
So, very ready to switch if Sony don’t pull their finger out.
The conversion applies to the amount of light as well: f/2.8 on FF has 2x as much light entering as f/2.8 on APS-C, and 4x as much as f/2.8 on Micro 4/3. Aperture numbers are relative to focal length, which is scaled proportionally to sensor size (for the same angle of view), so f/2.8 means physically a larger hole on FF.
Difficult vote, since I might buy a NEX-5R in case it comes bundled with the new pancake zoom for a reasonable price and I might buy the 35mm if it’s got OSS and I also might replace my SEL-16F28 + VLC-ECU1 in case the Wide Angle Zoom shows outstanding quality – but I’m pretty sure what I won’t buy: Nothing.
Any word if NEX-6 has a hotshoe? If it had a hybrid hotshoe like the rumoured one on the A99, not sure I could hold off temptation to buy my first Nex .
I wouldn’t mind a 28mm F1.8 or f1.4, then I wouldn’t mind something similar to the Pentax 43mm f1.9
Any news on whether the Nex 5 or 6 will come with built in flash?
Typically how long after an announcement are the products actually released/available?
Usually between 1 and 2 months, sometimes faster.
+1…confirmation on built in flash? I’m guessing if the NEX-F3 has it then the newer models up must also have it.
So, if it is announced on August 28, when do you think they will be available in stores?
History tells us one month from announcement.
If the NEX-5R and the NEX-6 are both going to have a 16mp sensor Sony are probably going to use exactly the same sensor in both cameras – would anything else make economic sense?
Of course a 35mm f/1.8 prime is going to be as big as the 30mm f/2.8 Sigma – and probably quite a bit heavier too – it has to have enough glass to let in so much more light.
C’mon Sony. More camera bodies please!
I’m going out on a limb here. Considering that I haven’t seen the 16mm f/2.8 in stock at the official Sony site for so long, I’m starting to think they’re going to discontinue it. I haven’t heard of a replacement yet, but hopefully, they’ll add compatibility with the fish-eye and wide-angle adapters to this new 16-50 somehow.
That’s true, what’s going on with the 16 mm pancake? I would have bought it, for the heck of it, but it’s just not available. BTW I don’t think any of the new zoom lenses will be a true pancake, and they’re not f/2.8 either.
I really hope the lenses come with OSS, otherwise that’d be a no for me. No oss= lousy videos.
I have two questions about the NEX-6 remaining: Tri-nav? Hot shoe?
I, unfortunately, can’t afford a 7 right now. But the viewfinder, tri-nav, and hot shoe are all really big selling points to me. The lower res viewfinder is ok by me, as is the lower 16mp image. If the NEX-6 has tri-nav (I don’t know why it wouldn’t) and a hot shoe…that baby is mine!
If not, more toiling for me.
The Sony 35mm/f1.8 prime could be spiffy. I had planned to do the Sigma 30mm/f2.8 when I decided on a body, because of the cost and rave reviews. If the Sony is about the same cost/quality, the slightly more appealing +5mm and f1 would be nice.
Now finally Sony will give some * REALLY * tough competition to MFT and the newborn, inept canon M. Pentax K-01 needs better, non-ugly second version and Nikon needs to come to the party with bigger sensor.
This is most definitely Sony’s time if the prices and results of lens are non-atrocious.
Sony should produce their own version of Panasonic spec-heaven of a camera FZ-200: 25mm-600mm with constant f2.8 aperture. I really like the build quality of their HX megazoom series. They would kill in this segment. Use the large & beautiful RX100 sensor but use a lower zoom factor of 12X (instead of 24X with the Pana). With an exceptional Macro capability, Sony would make a killing in this segment. Their RX100 has already become a perennial favorite at amazon.com.
i wish the nex-7 had come with phase detect AF rather than the contrast detect AF.
Wish NEX-6’s box like NEX-7 also!!
