Olympus patent discloses new 3D camera and lens.

You still remember the huge 3D advertising campaigns? They are now almost gone. We even had a 12.5mm f/12 Micro Four Thirds 3D lens from Panasonic but after it nothing new camera for the MFT system. But at least on “patent-paper” research and development is continuing and Egami (translation here) spotted that new Olympus 3D lens and camera patent. The lens design of the 25mm f/2.8 and 24-41mm f/4.5-5.6 3D lens is made for Four Thirds sensor camera. But I really doubt we will see these lenses for real any time soon…don’t you think?

  1. I’m still waiting for quadrophonic sound systems to become popular. Yeah, 3D TV and photos just isn’t that interesting to the masses.

    1. “I’m still waiting for quadrophonic sound systems to become popular. ” I think that happened about 30 years ago, didn’t it? 😉

      1. I had a Sanyo quad record/cassette player and still have some quad lps. Quad and 3d both very underwhelming.

My patented gas projection 3D TV giving full 3d is the next move. That’s a space that only needs to be 30mm deep is full of gas where the image is shown projected onto the gas solidifying it momentarily giving a full 3d. scalable from very small to bigger than a football field.

Nothing to do with it, but, I also have an original 4 digit serial # Philips stereo cassette player the original original with teak surround, and some same vintage cassettes blank and pre recorded, all from the initial releases, with the receipt.

    2. One could argue that quadrophonic sound finally became popular with the 5.1 surround sound systems. For home cinema, not for home concerts, but still.

  2. Ah! Yeah! Imagine a 3D babbling brook on the wall, including the environmental quadrophonic sounds coming from all corners of your living room. I hope they will start production real fast, right after releasing a limited edition black 8mm 2.8 prime.

  3. Experiments with 3D are almost as old as photography itself 🙂

I agree that it is unlikely that there will be any new lenses coming out of this patent. One thing to consider is that having a large patent portfolio is always to an advantage these days, as many technology exchange agreements involve the swapping of patent rights. Another point is that many useful patentable developments have come out of what were originally peripheral aspects of earlier patents. Many times the concept exceeds the scope of the existing technology and that new concept ends up driving engineering development.

    1. Older sir,

Charles Wheatstone did a lot of early work in 3D before photography came to be!

3D Photography was only about 10yrs or so behind normal photgraphy… There are many 3d photos from 1858 I have seen!

  4. dear Oly

never mind 3D lenses please how about instead a $500 12mm f2 mk ii that’s black (not L.E.!), forgoes the pop-out focus ring thing in favor of a simpler design and cheaper material like the 45mm, and comes with a lens hood

    thanks
