Image on top shows the Canon EOS C300. The new GH will compete against it.
–
Panasonic said many times that they want to focus on the pro market. And I am certain Panasonic will launch a 4K Micro Four Thirds camera in 2014.
And I already have some possible specs of the new camera! One of my long time trusted sources shared the full specs. I wasn’t able to doublecheck the info yet so don’t take it as a full FT5 rumor yet. Her they are:
Panasonic GH4
16mp
1/8000 shutter
1mil dot OLED screen
21mm OLED viewfinder, 3,000+ dot.
Time code
200mbps mp4 All-i/100mbps IPB
4k/30p
4:2:2 10/8bit output
3G-SDI and XLR adaptor (An adaptor that the camera sits on with XLR x2, HD-SDI x4)
Price: €2799
The source also said that it’s a rather chunky slab of a thing taking the whole width of the GH4 and about an inch deeper front to back, with the outputs all facing out the left if you were to view when holding the camera facing away from you. Certainly not an item expected to be used outside of a rig by the looks of it.
A second source confirmed that a High End Panasonic MFT camera is likely going to be announced in Spring. He cannot confirm the specs but he told me Panasonic will put all the best tech they have into that camera. The camera will compete against the Canon EOS C300 but for 1/5 of the price!
UPDATE: A detailed analysis can be read at EosHD.

2800 euro only!
Actually a bargain with specs like these.
No raw video? :-/ Oh well.
Am sure this will still turn out to be a very nice camera!
But it seems for now Blackmagic Design is safe? ;-P
I bet there will be no RAW video.
Until I have 20TB drive at my PC, I don’t even want to hear about 4k RAW. Fuck that shit.
Agree – RAW 1080 ok… RAW 4k – who are we kidding… I’m runnign 17TB of storage and i agree – fuck that shit!
Personaly I’m happy with good quality compression – when the GH2 hits about 50Mbit/sec – that kind of quality is pritty good – the last 3% will cost 3x more!
Ha! I agree. How would you manage workflow with a 30 or 60 minute television documentary that has 10 to 15 interviews. My unedited interviews often go 20 to 30 minutes each! I suppose you would dial back the bit rate when you record interviews, then crank it back up when shooting b-roll?
Sounds good, if the image quality is top notch than maybe I will buy two of those babies when they arrive in the stores.
Although in this money we need at least 50/60p.
OK i’m interested.
“Coincidently” EOSHD posted about this at the exact same time:
http://www.eoshd.com/content/11371/detailed-panasonic-gh4-rumoured-specs
He is very positive of it in his coverage, I reckon Canon and their Cinema range ought to be shaking in their boots right now!
yep, we worked together on this 🙂
Queue all the Canon boys claiming the sensor is “too small for professional production.” This is gonna be great if it overcranks in Full HD, I’ll be sure to pre-order from the 4/3 rumors affiliate link 🙂
haha…. “too small”! Yeah right 😛
The whole claim that the BMPCC’s S16 sensor is “too small” is complete and utter bunk, so to say a standard m4/3 sensor is “too small” is utterly ridiculous 🙂
Admin, I was wondering if you and EOSHD were still working on something. As some time ago EOSHD hinted there was a big announcement coming soon to do with “micro four thirds / GH”. Is this it? It would seem like it, as there has been nothing else between then and now which could be it.
I don’t know about video, but it is surely too small for stills, unless it costs 300 bucks.
Yes, you, Bollox.
Go find a full frame site to fuel your little boy fantasies.
Just telling the truth. Does it hurt? Chill out, it’s just a camera.
You wouldn’t know the truth if it hit you in the face.
But just in case, the truth is that there are many people here who demonstrated being able to take very good pictures with m4/3 (just checkout the 43rumors group on flickr for example), and you? all you can show is silly trolling comments.
>”The whole claim that the BMPCC’s S16 sensor is “too small” is complete and utter bunk, so to say a standard m4/3 sensor is “too small” is utterly ridiculous”
That’s assuming that the standard m4/3 sensor is used in the GH4K, but I have a feeling that that will not be the case.
1) the standard m4/3 sensor is, well, 4:3, not 16:9. And Panasonic now seems to prefer cropping the sensor down, as opposed to multi-aspect.
2) since the current sensor, cropped to 16:9, is only marginally higher resolution than 4K, it would be easier to further crop this down again instead of downscaling. (Basically, a new 4K ETC mode.)
If that does turn out to be the case — which, granted, it may not — the resulting sensor image area would actually be *smaller* than the Black Magic sensor. Or slightly larger than a 1″ sensor (with a crop factor of around 2.6 relative to a full 35mm photography film frame).
I do hope this turns out to not be the case, tho.
“1) the standard m4/3 sensor is, well, 4:3, not 16:9.”
Just to clear something up. While indeed the standard m4/3 sensors happen to have a 4:3 aspect ratio, its pure coincidence that the aspect ratio and the name both suggest a 4:3 relationship.
The name does NOT come from 4:3, but from the fact that the active area of a 4/3″ sensor happens to be approximately the same as that of an old fashioned 4/3″ video tube. 4/3 is a reference to the 4/3″ format, and not the aspect ratio.
“And Panasonic now seems to prefer cropping the sensor down, as opposed to multi-aspect.”
Seems to prefer? or had to due to circumstances? Considering the likely source of the sensor, I’m pretty sure its the later.
Micro four thirds and Sony is attacking everyone!
Sounds more like an af100 replacement….
I have a feeling the Sony FS700 will not go unscathed by this… that being said, Sony will probably put out a decent FF video solution before long, but they will also charge $10K for the damned thing.
10 bit – nice! No need for raw from my side…. Any info on other resolutions/frame rates? 1080 240p?
Same thoughts here MPS, I keep the little BMPCC handy to get my raw jollies… but 10 bit 4:2:2 will be perfect for the majority of my shoots. Overcranking is the biggest question now, 60P will be there for sure but will it also do 120 or God help us – 240?!! I love being a filmmaker in these times!!
“The source also said that it’s a rather chunky slab of a thing”
I assume this is referring to the 3G-SDI and XLR adaptor?
Hoping that the actual GH4 has good ergonomics.
Errrr, won’t it be a GH5 due to avoidance of 4 in Japanese model numbers?
Remember Nikon has the D4 so its not like all japanese brands avoid the 4.
But Panasonic clearly do. Look at their camera history. There will be no GH4.
Look what happened with Olympus and the OM-4. The OM system died. Never again..
It should be called GH 4k 😀
please read the last article ,it ‘not replace GH3(that mean currect GH line) i guess panny create new mirrorless m4/3 line for videographer
Just a question: – 4:2:2 10/8bit “output” – Will you need an external recorder to have them?
So this thing definitely doesn’t compete against E-M1.
I think it’s the other way around. 😉
I’d love to see Panasonic release a GH-series camera in the spirit of the original GH1 and GH2… full-featured and reasonably sized. The G6 simply doesn’t cut it because it lacks Constant Preview of the GHx and GX7.
At the very least, Panasonic should include Constant Preview in EVERY camera! This is a game changer feature! No Preview buttons to hit to see what exposure I have set! It would be even better if they figured out a way to make it usable in A and S modes, not just M mode alone.
compete with the OM-D. It’s VIDEO camera first. And in video, the OM-D cameras aren’t even fit to be in the same room with current Panasonic m43 cameras, much less this new one.
What is Vitaliy Kiselev up to here…..
http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/146664#Comment_146664
“According to few of my sources it is mostly incorrect rumors. Made with sole purpose to confuse m43 users.”
Vitaly also sais “Thing that I know is that few guys and some sellers work against m43 with money interest behind it.”
Well it could be a very subtile FUD feeding a rumor site this way. But since we have a very precise and detailled FT4 rumor with a price tag in euros (we don’t know the name of the cam, but hey, 2799€, that’s Vulcan precision: is Mr Spoc around?) and not in Yen, maybe vitali’s right? Ready for another complot theory? 😀
If we could find a patent from panasonic for a 4K cam, that would backup this rumor quite well and help to determine who is FUDing in there 🙂
Anyway it’s still a great thing: if some sellers work against m43 it means that m43 is a real threat. If not, it means that videographer will get what looks like a nice toy to play with 🙂
Also, reading this rumor, we would need an external recorder to have 4:2:2 10 bit. Not good.
I’m a little bit surprise that this annoucement will be in GH series because between a GH4 and G6 a big unfill gap will be produced. Rather that this product couldn’t be in a new serie as GV1 or soemthing like that?
View it as a “AG-GH4” (which is what EOSHD called it) and then it makes a *lot* more sense!
No ND?
Exactly what I was wondering.
Im hoping for a new af100 that competes with the c100. And no ND would be a dealbreaker for me, its almost the only reason why the c100 is imo beter buy than the fs100 even if I almost everyday se used fs100 for half the price of a c100.
No ND filter is not a deal breaker at all. Just buy some step up rings and a Vari ND, or regular ND filters. Slightly less convenient.
I don’t think this will be a GH-branded camera. This sounds more like a broadcast camcorder to me, not an enthusiast consumer camera.
We often see manufacturers skip the “4” on consumer cameras, but keep it for pro cameras. Apparently, pros are expected to be less suspicious to superstition. So perhaps the GH line is considered sufficiently pro to launch a “GH4”.
Aren’t Japanese companies incl. Panasonic hate number 4 ?
In Japan, 4 is a symbol for death.
“4” is not a symbol for death. Phonetically, the word for “death” in Japanese, Chinese and Korean resembles “4.” That’s all.
That’s why I doubt there will be any GH4 🙂
You mean like there was never an OM-4, or a Nikon F4 and D4, or a Rebel T4i?
Not all Japanese are superstitious.
Panasonic specifically: I just extrapolate the fact there is no G4/GF4. But who cares.
Yah death to canon n nikon dslr filming. Bring on..
> 4k/30p
I think the videographers should start complaining about missing 24p/25p early. That way, the lack of the fps options, and Panasonic’s response “uh what?”, would be even more painful to swallow after the official launch……
4 isn’t a symbol of death, it’s just pronounced the same. It’s like calling it the GH-death. But every time I hear Japanese people talk about camera model names, they nearly always use the English anyway (GH-three not GH-san for example) so I don’t expect them to shy away from using the number 4 when the 4K resolution revolution is just getting started.
Sony called their latest big product the PS4 although still seem to be avoiding the number in their camera line-up. It’s weird.
Anyway, back to the rumour – It sounds like this is a broadcast product and not at all within the usual camera line up, certainly not a replacement for a GH3, it’s a shame 60fps hasn’t been reported though. High resolution video always works great in slow-motion to show off the quality, and that option is being reduced without a 60 fps mode.
Nevertheless, there were no GF4, G4. But the naming is of course is not important.
“Sony called their latest big product the PS4 although still seem to be avoiding the number in their camera line-up. It’s weird.”
Maybe the play station group has not ‘seen the light’ as the camera group seems to have done.
To me it looks more like a AF100 replacement, in a smaller body (hopely pretty too), maybe with the GH3 sensor, and next year a GH4 with 2.5k will be make more sense, with 120fps maybe the XLR battery grip option (This is a long time rumor too).
I really don’t get it. It’s time to separate stills from video. If you want video go and buy a video camera, likewise for photography. Each will compromise the other.
No one is forcing you to buy a hybrid camera.
+1 Here we go again
If you actually look at how photojournalists are working these days, the combination of video and stills in one body is very much in demand, and beats the heck out of having to carry multiple extra bodies.
You’re so right dude – I mean WHY would anyone want a camera in their phone??? IT’S A PHONE!!
Derp.
This would really be more of a C500 competitor, since the C300 is not 4K capable.
Cables coming out of the operator side? Really? Panasonic is not ready to compete in the pro sphere if they can’t cover the essential basics of camera ergonomics. Of course they already do compete in the pro space with plenty of broadcast cameras out there – like the consumer division doesn’t talk to the pro division or something?
4x 3G SDI output would seem to indicate that no onboard 6G SDI. Not a huge deal, as some outboard recorders can handle quad 3G, or relatively cheap quad 3G to 6G multiplexers are available, but a shame as a single 6G would have been more elegant.
Assuming that 4K/30p just means that 4K/24p (23.976fps) was omitted from the printed spec, but is actually there – would be like shipping a car with only 3 wheels if that were the case. Overcranking ability would be nice. If not possible at 4K, great if an option only at 2K operation.
Glad to see that it has a relatively low resolution sensor and high resolution EVF. Also glad to see timecode support – a mandatory feature on a pro camera.
Well, thinking twice maybe this can be feasible, Canon have 1DC, right? Sony will launch a 4K alpha camera (last year NAB they have a prototype), so? make sense that Panasonic will launch a 4K camera in a DSLR body, but i don’t know if the Lumix line will be good for this, just that.
This will be an interesting fight come NAB 2014 (April). Sony’s 4K Alpha will mostly be coming out of the closet as well. Coupled that with the closet case Panny GH4K and we’ve got a real wild wild west showdown in Las Vegas.
Actually if Sony can come up with an Alpha 4K that implements Olympus’s 5-axis stabilization it’s gonna be a doozy of a bloodbath.
I’m not sure how relevant stabilization is with a pro video product. Most stable stuff will be shot on sticks. Or handheld with the intention of having camera motion. Stabilization will be applied in post if needed.
i m not sure but ‘panasonic put all the best tech they have into that camera’
if they do it like GX7 (features) is very good 😉
They use steadicam for smooth handheld shots, as fast used on The Shining.
Olympus EM1 should have been the first consumer camera to have 4K video. Nobody would have criticized its price. And since Olympus don’t have any pro video camera line to protect, they have nothing to lose..
The exact price tag for a rumored product looks really funny 🙂
@43 rumors
Can you check with your sources whether this camera has a global shutter or not?
yep
@admin
Is that yes it does have a global shutter or yes you will check with your sources?
Nice! All it took was me buying a Blackmagic camera, and Panasonic gets off their collective arse to get my business back 🙂
I would actually be interested in this camera, but I have to say that I really like the lack of image processing that the pocket cam provides. Yeah, it’s pretty gross straight out of the camera, and there is only one other color processing option, but it’s so much more flexible in post. I hope Panasonic gives us the ability to get the same kind of flat image out of the GH-whatever-is-next.
I hope by HD-SDI/XLR connections on the ‘left side’, they mean left side as you look at the front of the camera. Left side as you operate would be horrible. Should be right side.
Just realised it’s what I feared. Daft.
ahhhh to get this or a 5d mark iii?????
No moire, please 🙂
Guys, stop worrying about the details so much. This is still a rumor, and what’s being rumored this early will almost certainly change. Try reading the rumors from a year ago. You’ll get a big laugh on just how far off many of them were.
Hi I am Panastar. You may know me. Lots of people do.
I am here to pronounce that 4K porn will be the next big thing(tm). So get a 4K camera and make oodles of monies!!!
oh , PanaStar for Porn Star ha ha ha good job
Best off getting a 4k monitor then 😉
Wow…. It sounds very good. I hope we will not be begging for focus peaking like in GH3 case.
Great specs, and probably no focus peaking… 🙂
Right: Panasonic could actually avoid making a good camera to become a very good camera by leaving focus peaking out again …. or 25p for the PAListanis …. done that, been there….;-)
Focus Peaking is on the Panasonic G6 so it will be on this camera also.
Irony button was full on …. let’s see what really comes.
A bit too speculative all of this but fun to write the wish-lists now and hope we may not have to wait for the Easter-bunny for delivery….
And on GX7
I’m more than a little skeptical about a spring 2014 roll-out for such a camera and very skeptical about the rumored specs. Panasonic is very uncool right now, the hacked GH1 and GH2 almost overcame the AF100 debacle but the still unhacked GH3 has now been relegated to being marginally at the top of a pile of stills cameras that will do AVCHD. If a rumored GH4 arrived with a better spec than the BMCC and BMCPCC it might make an impression but I think Canon cinema EOS is going to be just fine. At this point I don’t think anything can make a dent in the Canon juggernaut, too many people invested in the glass and that like Canon color science, the C300 remains the most in demand camera in rentals, producers ask for it by name, they sure as hell don’t ask for AF100s.
I hate trying to get professional results out of marketing/publicity-led products. If only we can get a a good 1080/2k image out first, before this 4k crap. It’s always the next big thing, the next big thing… just give us a good grade-able image at the current standard resolution (2k 2048×1152) before jumping on the next band-wagon, puleeeease!
would be great to see a AF1000 successor, its about time… I hope it will be similar ergonomics and a decent 50+ mbit codec to be ready for broadcast.
if they really want to compete with canon c300/c500 they should include nd filters and xlr inputs/sdi outputs without an adapter in my opinion…
All I want is an m4/3 chip in a shoulder mount with a proper eyepiece, SDI/HDMI and XLR’s, with a broadcast quality codec (50-100mbit or more), and some form of highspeed slo-mo (120+fps). 4K sounds awesome, but 2.7K would be just as great (Alexa range).
No more rigs, no more contraptions, give us a proper film making tool. Sony is on the right path with the F5/55, Arri has the Alexa, get back in the game Panny, we miss you.
My wishlist!
No extra crop in video mode
4:3 video 4k mode to be used for anamorphic
Colours should be like GH1. Not gh2 (darker) not like GH3 ( too bright pinkish)
Slowmo
Some sort of in body image stablizing during video (i know not gonna happen though)
Bigger lcd screen.
4k or at least 2.5k without any crop factor.
Gimme all n charge waeva it takes.
XxXxX
Great news, did any info indicated this camera ones with interchangeable lens mount? If it did, I may just miss read the rumor specs. I did remember there was a ag series camcorder showed by panasonic.
If it is going to compete against the Canon EOS C300 and has a form factor similar to the GH3 (which has both been quoted as so from sources) then I’m 99.999999999% sure it will have an interchangeable lens mount.
And not even a mention about the most obvious omission by Panasonic on the GH3 ……. focus peaking. Will the GH4 rectify this or will there be another annoying statement from Pana that the Venus engine is at capacity dealing with the data stream?
