  1. According to this site: http://pietrzyk.us/media-card-study/ the Sony cards have comparable read speeds to the Sandisk Extreme Pro, but a little over half the write speed. It’s probably fine for video and single-shot stills, but if you shoot a lot of bursts/brackets, it’ll take almost twice as long before you get back your ability to chimp (as compared to Sandisk).

  2. A decent deal (Sony SD cards), but nothing unusual. I paid about the same for a couple of the cards last summer (B&H, if I remember correctly). Where that 60% off came from, I don’t know, unless it’s from Sony marketing, or compared to prices a year or more ago. It’s like cheesy marketers saying their product is “Now, this week only…60% discount! Don’t miss this incredible savings at Jimbo’s Bait and Croissants – your favorite tech store “. Of course, that “60% discount” comes from some ridiculously high list price that no one ever charged.

I agree with Panda that they seem to be decent cards, with write speeds a little lower than others for similar prices…of course, we don’t know who actually makes these cards for Sony. Panda’s comment about these cards being good for video (which is why I bought mine), but not so good for still photo bursts (especially in RAW), is also good advice.

  3. Speaking of which. Do people throw out their cards after so many months , years, writes… Etc. I know sd cards don’t las forever so when is it time to say goodbye ?

    1. I don’t need to throw mine out after a certain amount of time, because I usually lose them first! In fact, the only ones I haven’t managed to lose during the last two years are a few 4 and 8gig class 4 cards… By “lose” I am including just misplacing them for awhile. For example, it took me two months to find a couple of brand new 64 gig cards (still in the bag) from B&H after a recent move. Another new 64 gig card managed to find a hidden crevice in a camera bag last Halloween and didn’t surface again until I dropped the bag a couple of months later.

    2. “when is it time to say goodbye ?”
When they don’t say ‘hello’ when you wake them up.
Or they just wont wake up, that’s a good positive, negative signal.

    3. There is no one good answer. I was at a photography seminar and there was a representative from Lexar and SanDisk whom I both asked. Cheaper cards can start to go in about 2.5 to 5yrs. Many pro level cards like Lexar Professional and SanDisk Extreme have lifetime warranties and should last your lifetime. From my own research on various tech websites, the technology they use should allow between 100,000 and 1 million + read/write cycles depending on the quality of the card.

Theses cards do fail but not often. I write the purchase date on each card and as they near the 5 year Mark they are replaced because the are too small for the new megapixel camera I now own or they are suspect to failure.

  4. BTW, was the GX7 price reduction a temporary thing ? I’ve checked the usual dealers and it seems to have gone back to the MSRP, I remember seeing the GX7 as low as 899 but now it’s 998 body only and 1099 for the kit, what gives ? I’m sure I saw the kit for less than a $1000 at some point, maybe it’s the peyote but I’m sure those prices were lower.

Also, no price reductions to either the EPM2 or EPL5 after all this time ? PM2 should be 399 (or lower) with kit by now IMO.

    1. yep it was temporary. BH warned about it expiring. Still waiting for the BH gx7 order @$900 I placed that’s been backordered for almost a month :\

      1. thanks for the reply, I guess it wasn’t the peyote then (phew), I’ll wait for christmas deals, no need to hurry for me, I’m not trying to be cheap but I’m psychologically set on the rebate price now, so no way I’m paying more than that now.
