You can save $200 on the Panasonic GX7 with 20mm f/1.7 combo at Amazon (Click here and read the codes). You will pay $1224 instead of $1444. This is a much more interesting combination than the GX7 with 14-42mm lens.
Coming back to the GM1:
It still sells (order+preorder) well at Amazon (mirrorless ranking here). although the Sony A7 series and Fuji X-E2 stole the show last week. I think the GM1 is one of the best cameras released this year and that’s why I am getting one to replace my old E-P1 🙂

GX7 + 20mm kit has always been $1999 in Canada.

Try 1,199
Yes, my mistake. Price is $1199. Not sure why Amazon was so expensive to begin with.
Yep. I got my black GX7-20mm kit for the same at Aden Camera. It was about $1145 with the exchange rate. 🙂
You mean $1,199. For those of us in the U.S., though, that doesn’t come with a U.S. warranty, and it’s questionable whether it could get repaired under the Canadian warranty without coming from a Canadian address. If this Amazon deal offered the black camera body, as available in Canada, I might just jump on it. For now, I’m, still waiting for the black GX7 with black 20mm lens with U.S. warranty. Wouldn’t hurt if the price dropped a bit, too.
Or you can buy the kit instead of the body and lens separatly for even cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Camera-Tilt-Live-Viewfinder-SILVER/dp/B00F4PQGDG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1382460475&sr=1-4&keywords=panasonic+gx7
Those are not sold by Amazon. Most or all of those sellers are in Japan or Hong Kong, some of those cameras have Japanese interface (and I’ve read that such cameras cannot be switched to English), and probably none of them have a U.S. warranty.
I will never understand Olympus/Panasonic marketing/Sales. Releasing a product and then having immediate rebates/discounts. They should just price them accordingly instead of the hassle/expense accounting issues with stuff like this.
Well, a lot of people will fall for a product with a big REBATE sticker on it. Pure psychology. So I think for the camera vendor it makes sense to sell at a discounted price rather than offer the same price as a standard.
I read somewhere that about 50-60% of rebates either never get claimed or they don’t submit the correct documents before it is too late. It is totally a marketing ploy.
In the 90’s I read that only about 1 in 1000 rebates was actually cashed. But that was the golden age of rebates
Nikon does the same.
Still too expensive…
My GH2 will do for another year at least.
Yeah, every time a new camera comes along I find a lens I want more. I’m waiting for the Nocticron now…..I still don’t feel I’ve maxed out the capabilities of my GH2 yet anyway.
Isn’t that the way it should be?
Too many people never get to know their equipment really well before they “need” to buy something else, it seems.
Yes the GM1 looks to be a best seller for good reason. What I find puzzling is the complete absence of the GH3 anywhere in this top 100 listing as well as absent in Japan? Has Pany stopped producing and selling the GH3? I have argued that Pany should be concentrating on niche models such as the GX7 and GM1 instead and no need to try and cover all bases if the DSLR design models do not sell well? i do prefer the swivel LCD on those models but no reason Pany could not include a swivel screen for other models.
The GH3 isn’t likely selling well among consumers, so maybe the top listings are all about consumers’ purchases?
Really sad to see this product so far down the rankings, it seems to have everything I have always wished a panasonic still camera to have on the m43 format..indeed it has what I wish almost any camera had on a m43 format (for photos as opposed to video)
Focus Peaking, EVF built in, small profile, good control dials,IBIS for legacy, support for Panasonic Stabilized Lenses. These are features people have been asking for, I think Sony just managed to over shadow anything and everything with the new FF cameras. The M43 usebase needs to remain at a certain size to entice third party developers to make lenses and products (like a wireless TTL trigger system), I hope this doesn’t inspire a race to the bottom on the M43 format while everyone else moves over to Sony mount.
I really don’t know what else they could have thrown into this other than weather sealing and a better sensor (which is not yet made for m43).
Actually the GX7 is not doing all that bad if you tally up all the various combos offering still ahead of the EM5. I think that the GX7 should and will be doing better considering the rave reviews it is now getting and it is more available but it does have competition from Sony and Fuji coming later on the scene and is medium sized in comparison.
I personally hope that Pany also produces a smaller model than the GX7 ie a GM2 patterned after their patent camera.
Why not consider the Yongnuo sytem triggers, I use the 602 model (can’t remember if they are the Canon or Nikon system), however I use four FL50 (three are R’s) all in manual mode and metered individually and find it more reliable than TTL metering. Just my two penneth on my experience with the sytem, I have found exposure is more accurate than using the R’s in TTL with E-620 or E-M5.
When going around on an event or wedding or such with one or more light assistants, there is no time for individual light metering as things change way too quickly for that.
Your suggestion works very well for a studio or set where you have both time to prepare, and can control the pace of things, and I’ll immediately revert to manual metering and flashes for such cases, but there are many more situations in which multiple flashes can be very useful.
live bulb, Apps…
Well, a ‘rangefinder styled’ camera is a bit of a niche product, despite the very vocal opinions of some of the people who really like such cameras. See, the amount of noise made by those people isn’t in any way related to how many such people exist.
Additionally, putting everything that customers ever asked for into a device does not guarantee it will sell like hotcakes. Sure, at first glance it should, but in practice it turns out the market doesn’t work like that.
Products that sell well first of all require a feature set that solves a real world problem that many people are actually experiencing, and additionally requires proper marketing to ensure people know that the product exists and is ‘the’ solution to a problem they are having. Sometimes marketing actually involves convincing people that they do have that problem to begin with (see Apple and the iPhone).
Doesn’t change that the GX7 is a very nice and attractive product, but that in itself doesn’t guarantee success.
If they had included a simple external microphone jack.
I love how Admin is obviously very passionate about m4/3, yet he’s still rocking his E-P1! How can a man who spends all his time writing about new gear resist G.A.S. so effectively???!!
It’s almost impossible, at least for me…
oh it’s very easy.. if you don’t have the money
Or if you have the money, but consult with your wife on major purchases…..if women get GAS, they are better at dealing with it!
Still rocking my E-PL1, but soon to get an E-M1. PDAF is the first must-have feature for me since the E-PL1 and its steampunk EVF!
So if you already have a 20mm, you could probably flip the new on on ebay for $350 – 400, bringing the price of the camera down to $825 – $875 (less ebay fees).
If I didn’t have to pay sales tax on purchases from Amazon, I’d be very tempted. Maybe I can have it shipped to a friend in a another state?
That’s what I’m doing and dumping my original 14-140mm, too. That should cover a good chunk of the cost of my GX7.
as much as i like the idea of the GM1 – the 20mm is and will remain my standard lens and it looks awful on it:

Kind of looks like a NEX, but you have to admit the size of the body+lens with the 20mm is one attractive portable option.
Looks OK to me… Would look better with the MkII, In either black or Silver..
Looks terrible. Ruins completely the look of a cute little camera. Only the 14mm is small enough for this camera. All other lenses will look ugly. And you are right, it is like a NEX small camera, which looks bad with lens other than a pancake because the camera is too small for APS-C lenses. The GM1 is in the same way simply too small for the M43 lenses other than the 14mm and 17mm f/2.8.
I’ve never understood the focus on how a camera looks. Isn’t how it works, and how the pictures it takes look, much more important? Is a camera a fashion accessory, or a tool for making images?
“I think the GM1 is one of the best cameras released this year and that’s why I am getting one to replace my old E-P1 :)”
You take rather pragmatical stance on gear. I would love to hear your opinion on it!
P.S. I think the 2.8/17mm you like would feel itself at home on the diminutive cam.
Really nice little camera, until you put a decent lens on it. Then it looks ugly.
From photos I’ve seen, the updated 20mm looks great on the GM1.
I’m kind of liking the orange one, for some strange reason. Maybe it’s a Halloween thing? 😉
Now we need a discount on the Olympus EM-1. It needs to be $1200, which is where it should have been the most in the first place.
The E-M1 will be $1200, but you have to wait at least another year. It is a unique camera, the only that can use 43 and M43 lenses properly. So, I can’t see it reduced much.
Indeed it’s unique: tiny sensor but as big as a Sony full-frame camera, and only $200 cheaper.
Once the 50 people who care about using 4/3 lenses buy theirs, this capability won’t prop up the price any longer.
Actually Bob, that ability also results in some advantages when exclusively using m4/3 lenses, so nope, it won’t be gone once the owners of 4/3 lenses have bought theirs.
Obviously you are also wrong about how many 4/3 lens owners there are, but that is besides the point.
IMO, Olympus is putting a premium on the E-M1 since it’s the first m4/3 that can use 4/3 lenses w/ PDAF. And that does make sense. I would expect the price to drop a little faster than it did on the E-M5. It will get to your price point in about 6 months.
Rock on! I’ll wait another 6 months for it to hit $500, then I’ll jump in.
Sad to see so many of Pany’s cameras with disposable prices. Digital cameras don’t hold much value, but Pany’s seems to drop the quickest.
