On August 28th we will very likely see the two new NEX cameras and three new NEX lenses. In the meantime Amazon is offering a $50 discount on the current NEX when purchased along a NEX lens (Click here to watch the full offer). And if you think you know which NEX products sells best check out the mirrorless ranking at Amazon (here). I wouldn’t have expected to see the Sony E 55-210mm on top!

Hi Andrea – I suspect the popularity of the 55-210mm lens can be explained by the fact that most purchasers of NEX models see this as the most cost effective way of extending the range of their kit lens. I am really not being disparaging, but the first question many consumers ask about a lens is ‘how far will it zoom ?’ People that perceive the need for and purchase specialist lenses, including more expensive fast primes, almost certainly make up a much smaller share of the total NEX market. That said I do hope your predictions for Aug 28th turn out to be correct ! Thanks for the informative blog.
I just went through this with my mother who’s retired. She definitely wanted to upgrade from a point and shoot or superzoom to a removable lens camera, but just couldn’t get beyond the ‘lack of zoom’ that she’d have vs the super zooms. I explained ‘zoom’ vs ‘IQ’, but the end result was her insistence of getting closer to something over the quality of the photo itself. Even if she could have cropped a higher quality image.
I’ve had similar responses from friends and family who just can’t get beyond “but I can zoom 40x with camera XYZ and it’s only $500.”
That desire to get close definitely pushes new people to the easiest solution.
Im waiting for the next NEX pancake zoom.
That would actually be the 1st one.. 🙂
I’m also not waiting for a new NEX. Internet and apps ? Oh yeah, that’s clearly what the system needs. I’m just hoping for a good quality 16-50 (no f/6.3 nonsense) or I’m jumping ship. I’m tired of waiting for Sony and when I look at the effort Samsung is making with bodies and lenses, and Sony’s failure in other areas like TVs, it makes me wonder if its management hasn’t lost the plot.
Someone please resurrect Minolta !
Is the Nex 6 being announced at this event? I may have to sell my 5n for the 6. I love to use the EVF with the 5n but then cannot use the flash at the same time. Problem solved with the 6.
Waiting to see what the NEX-6 offers. Probably my next camera will be that model. I hope the lower resolution in the EVF doesn’t mean it will be a really bad thing.
SEL-55210 & SEL-30M35 are simply the only Sony E-Mount lenses usually available, since otherwise the SEL-50F18 would be on top.
