Dear readers!
Yasuyuki Nagata (Sony Imaging Division Deputy Senior General Manager) said that Sony is “seriously considering a professional-level SLT camera“, however, “the company will listen to what its customers demand” before it can reveal its next step (Source Techradar). And now it’s time to collect your ideas about the next fullframe camera features. Please comment this post to suggest your features/idea list. After a couple of days I will write a poll adding all your options.
I will show you an example by disclosing my idea/features list for the next FF cameras:
– FF NEX (I want that!)
– removable sensor (to have the freedom to use different sensors like it works for [shoplink 8776 ebay]medium format digital backs[/shoplink]).
– Capability to move up the semitransparent mirror to avoid the small light loss.
– APP store for Sony cameras. let users create applications for Sony cameras (See the amazing list of iPhone-iPad applications!)
– B&W sensor with extremely high dynamic range.
– Hybrid viewfinder system a la [shoplink 8775 ebay]Contax G2 (Click here to see tha camera)[/shoplink]. The Contax viewfinder zooms as you change lenses! By the way, Contax is from Zeiss 🙂
Your idea matters! Let’s start!!!
P.S.: Please do not suggest lenses for now. I will write a new post soon to ask you for you fullframe lens suggestions.

Yes Full-frame NEX! Please! With that same awesome EVF like the nex-7(hybrid VF would be better) and physical dials.
mirrorless fullframe. sony listen to the #1 demands.
A full-frame camera similar to the NEX-7 would be more useful than a DSLR, being more flexible.
Some people want high ISOs, others (like myself) want more megapixels. So the best thing would be to advance the two things together, not emphasise one or the other.
The uses of high ISOs are obvious. High megapixels are useful for recording art works and architecture, for industrial photography, for digitising images from film (including large format film), recording ancient manuscripts and archaeological sites, studio product and fashion photography, etc etc. But the noise has to be kept down too.
A FF Nex is the category killer. It must have a small enough depth to allow Leica and other glass to be used with adaptors. That means advanced microlenses. If it can be delivered for realistic money – under $4,000 – and has the quality it will be an enormous hit.
I need a SSS(body based anti-shake) in the future NEX. Otherwise, a “discount” will be put on 24/1.8 ZA.
I want it too!!! But just wonder is it really can fit a fullframe in e-mount?
– FF nex, equivalent of Leica in the good old times, top image quality in a carry around body
– for a professional fullframe: No moire filter, like MF camera – moire can be removed in post
– high megapixel count – color tones and definition would then approach MF
– b/w specific sensor, no bayer: would be nice, but not enough people would buy the camera (I would though…)
– slt or no slt: does not matter – the small loss of light is not significant anymore with current sensors.
I actually think people would buy the b/w specific sensor. Flickr has millions of users exclisively shooting black and white film. Right now nothing can touch medium format film when it comes to that stuff and we seriously need a digital equivalent.
Feels like writing to Santa Klaus… 😀
First think that come to my mind:
1)Killer (I mean real killer) high ISO performance – 21mpix is more than enough.
2) 10fps is enough as long as it has a big buffer to shoot a lot without needing to stop the sequence
3) Improved dynamic range
4) Some way to by pass light loss through SLT mirror would be nice
5) support for both CFs and SDs.
6) Again, is it possible to remove AA filter?
7) Tethered and wi-fi(!) shooting
8) Lots (real metal one on chassis) metal controls knobs/wheels/switches: pros don’t like to dig into menus to change metering mode.
9) All AF points have to be cross ones
10) No Mpix race, please (I know I already said it, but you never know.. :D)
11) Support A-mount, if you want pros to be with you. If I have to switch mount, I may as well look at other camps’new offerings..
These are the first things that come into my mind.. Hope it helps..
“Killer (I mean real killer) high ISO performance – 21mpix is more than enough.”
Not for what I have in mind. 40 Mpix would be a starting point for a FF camera. When scanning in film shot on a Hasselblad, I find you need at least 50 Mpix to capture the detail.
And the Hasselblad would be a 30-year old camera. We should be able to equal that in the 21st century.
I think the most important feature for a pro full frame camera would be a large buffer so that you can easily take several seconds of full burst shots and not have to sit around for ages afterwards while the camera processes them. With jpgs only you should be able to take as long a burst as you like so the buffer fill speed would always be less than the emptying rate. The A77 is flawed as you can only do a second or so’s worth and are out of action for half a minute while it gets on with saving them. This isn’t any good. 12 fps is useless if you cannot use it under real life conditions.
Super fast AF that is customisable but chooses sensible defaults depending on picture type so you can pick it up for the first time and get decent shots.
2 control wheels so in program mode you can vary aperture and shutter speed independently.
Metered Manual should offer auto iso as an option as it is very restrictive not to have this available.
Min and max iso settings. Min and max shutter speed settings and min and max aperture settings in custom modes you can save.
Bluetooth so you can send pictures to your phone to share with anyone.
+1 for all these ideas, especially the auto iso stuff.
How about remote contr via iPhone/android and some real tethering options?
A FF Nex would be the best! But since this is about SLTs:
– Organic Body Style like A77 and with OPTIONAL grip (not built in like D3s etc.)
– Max. MP count with somewhere between 30-40MP
– In camera RAW conversion and picture retouching
– Please please please a “Quality” button to change swiftly between Raw and Jpeg (the solution on the X100 is brilliant here)
– And superplease with sugar on top: a “Protect” button. We really shouldn’t have to go into the menu for that.
– A colourful top AMOLED display instead of a LCD panel (like on the Leica S2)
– In camera lens correction
– Weather proof, obviously
– BIIIIIIIIG BUFFER!
That’s about it from my side. Please a serious camera without too massive technological hype, pros won’t fall for that anyway. Or you go for superaffordable, would also be nice. Thanks for the opportunity to say my opinion!
“Please a serious camera without too massive technological hype” – yep, very good point. Many shooters already have this issue with A77 – you should recall opinions like “too much pressure on tech gimmics while too few on quality” – the SLT tech really doesn’t help in that.
If you want to make gimmicky camera with tons of video features – fine. But also make ultimate photography camera – something you never really tried to do Sony, and part of a reasons why you failed in OVF DSLR competition against Nikon/Canon.
Set up a professional service for pro photographers.
Full frame body with the size of a77.
Budget full frame which cost about $1500.
To claim the VDLSR space and win Canon,
1. Headphone jack (to monitor sound)
2. Manual audio control
3. Framerate control (over/under cranking)
4. full hdmi out to record in 422/444 to external device
Improvements in Video Capturing is also a point for me:
1. Framerate control, AVCHD Sucks with it low bitrates
2. 422/444 Video Capturing
3. Some kind of RAW-Video capturing would be really cool.
4. High-Speed capturing mode for slow motions. (120fps or more)
And also some general wishes:
1. Give the user full control over bracketing (select number of shoots and the distance manually)
2. Stop Megapixel-Race. Better lowlight instead.
3. Body size like A700 or better A850/900. You can’t really handle small cameras like the series from 2×0 up to 5×0 and the A55 very comfortable. (With the A55 I saw that you can’t mount the camera to a tripod correctly when a lens is attached.)
Full frame mirrorless with offset micro lenses and Leica M mount! (yes – I know, flying pigs, hell freezing over etc. etc)
The Leica M mount is no problem. You can get an E to M adapter now.
But the concept of a NEX that is a modern equivalent of a film Leica is good, but I think the 5N or the 7 are pretty well there already. You just need to put a great photographer behind the camera.
Maybe a full frame NEX would be even more Leica-like as the M lenses would give their full angle of view.
1. less than 28 mp
2. fps of 12 or less, 8 under raw is perfectly fine, especially at a fullframe raw format
3.less noise compression in camera
4. similar aesthetics and feel of a900
5. 1080p at 30fps is completely fine
6. live view
7. full magnesium body
8. manual audio control
9. customization buttons
10. 35mm 1.4 that matches canikons
11. slt is fine, as long as it takes 1000 pics at minimum before battery dies
12. top lcd
13. weather proof
14. excellent metering
15. af has to be on par with d700
16. iso up to 3200 low noise
May seem silly but, the ability to switch mode from FF to APS-C. So the video/photo processing is adjusted to capture using your old APS-C size lenses. Mean people just moving to FF get the benefit of using their old lenses on new tech (better ISO, new frame rates etc), without being forced to wait ages to save and buy more lenses. That way they can upgrade bit by bit, but still by the camera on release, hence giving you a bigger market share from day 1.
@ Zak F
I like your idea. Using APSC lenses you could crop your pictures from the FF sensor. The transition from the APSC to the FF should be made easier for newbees.
It’s already there on the A900/A850.
Also, NTSC (30p and 60p), and PAL (25p and 50p) with 24p on ALL cameras, regardless of region. 120p720 wouldn’t go amiss either ;P
You mean 720p120, aren’t you? Would absolutely agree that sony should drop region spliting. And I would like 1080p120 😉
-Multi-sensor for very hi-iso (12,800 very clean) and 3d
-Complete customizable bracketing up to 9 shots +/- 7ev
-multiple bodies: smaller mpix for sports with big buffer and high speed, tracking EVF; high mpix with smaller framerate for art shooters (EVF or OVF)
-upgraded software to get most out of RAW
-weather-sealed bodies and lenses
-SLT: mirror lift for manual focusing (with peaking)
-A5xx body size
-customizable saturation of RGB at pixel level (:-))
The biggest wish would be on optical viewfinder instead of of that SLT nonsense of course but since this is not part of the question this is what could motivate to stick with a sony model in the future (even though i would probably keep it as second system because an optical viewfinder is the ultimate criteria for me)
– way more af points (and only double cross) than a900
– faster af
– at least 35 MP
– fullframe body with size of a900 and same or very similiar control layout
– same or very similiar grip as on a900 (which is really a great grip), built in grip would be great as well
– much better high iso performance and iso 50 (or lower)
– weather proof
– if possible no IR filter
– better control and more possibilities for bracketing (okay this may be the least essential, but it would make shooting way more comfortable)
– 5fps would be enough, if it can do more that is no problem
– wifi shooting
– a standard flash mount!!!!!! maybe with SMALL adapter to old Minolta flash mount
– i don’t care about video or NEX at all
– no moire filter
“a standard flash mount!!!!!! maybe with SMALL adapter to old Minolta flash mount” – it’s a big no-go for this. Standard hotshoe is crap. iISO all the way!
A FF NEX (with phase detection AF on sensor if possible).
I’d buy it for 2000€ tomorrow
Zeiss E-mount glass with AF with optics from ZM lenses
50/2 and 35/2 and 15/2.8.
The best idea to challenge Nikon and Canon FF leadership, is the possibility to change sensors, like in digital medium format. One could use a specialized, high performance sensor for any situation. It would results in a true professional system and also easily upgradeble camera.
Sony should make something that you say: that’s MORE(!) something for what a photographer could think to abandon a trusted Nikon-Canon system(that’s not simple)! A typical, even though excellent, FF camera would fail, in my opinion…
Sony needs professionals photographers to start saying to people: “Sony pro-camera are superior!”
– In camera RAW conversion and picture retouching with crop, resize, basic editting (light, contrast, saturation, sharpness…), and can add many picture effects after shooting, not before.
Multiple Exposure
1. OVF and EVF versions of FF!!!!!!!!
2. 32-36MP
3. ISO 50 + 80
4. a900 style body for OVF version
5. RAW and cRAW
6. 5 fps are plenty in full RAW for OVF version
7. Low noise ISO up to 3200
8. More AF points
9. Basic video on OVF version, full (crazy) video functionality on EVF version
10. Keep OVF version similiar to a900, plys live view, video and all the other current bells and whistles.
Thanks.
I forgot:
11. No NEX FF until, at least, 10 more NEX lenses and 5-10 additional a-mount lenses have been released.
Lol, that’s basically the a900 already with a few upgraded options.
A few more mp, one stop lower ISO and more AF points, plus video
a900 already has good body, best OVF, raw/craw, 5fps, low noise up to 3200. I wouldn’t even bother upgrading!
Why LOL? What’s funny when people want an upgrade to their existing a900? I have been using mine for nearly three years now (next months) and am very happy with it. But, I wouldn’t mind an improved higher res sensor, live view, basic vid, a better AF and keep the option of RAW and cRAW (which you don’t have in the a77, if I am not mistaken).
imho:
1) Affordable FF – yes, cut out good AF, FPS and etc, even mpix count, but let me have one for about price of a65 kit.
2) Nex FF? – i think no, i don’t need it. It would be nice to have new nex lences, but it’s offtop.
3) Main FF – ability to reduce noise by reducing pixel count (via interpolation?); ability to shoot with mirror, rised up; in-sensor stabilization – nice idea; GOOD RAW PROCECCING IN CAMERA, with ability to process already shot raw-files whenever you want to jpeg; automatic switching from CF to MS card(yes, we do want two card slots in higher-level body), if one filled up; interval shooting as option in drive mode; all AF sensors must be double cross, but we don’t need billiones of them, well spread across the frame in quantity under 20 or so would be enough; if it technically possible – would be nice to have x-sync at 1/500; one more desirable drive mode – reduced mpix or/and FPS, but looooooooooong lasting raw series, may be buffer for 25 raw – for 5 sec. 5fps. or so.
2 FF cameras.
One Full frame with about 24mp that will feature DR and High ISO(50,000+) at par with best full frames out there.HD Video is a plus.Price point 2000$ : )
One Full Frame with 36mp with fast buffer,AF, dual CF slots,Best EVF ever, dual lcd for cam status and veiwing, coupled with some fast lenses. price point 3000$
I am primarily interested in a stills camera (although I don’t mind it having video capacity).
I would particularly welcome a very quiet camera (for candid work).
I would like a less bulky and heavy camera compared to the A900, something more like an A700 in size and weight.
I would like to see a FF alpha mount camera that does not have SLT but works more like a NEX7. The mirror seems to loose light and quality unnecessarily. As technology is moving away from the traditional film SLR there is an opportunity to re-consider the whole design.
Better TTL flash metering. In my experience the Sony (and also Minolta) flashes underexpose as standard. I think they aren’t as good as the Nikon ones (my opinion please don’t shoot me!).
I’d also like to see a flash controller that is shoe mounted – something about the size of the HVL-F20AM but with the controller facility of the HVL-F58AM.
LOW high ISO noise. I rarely use my A900 above 400 because it is too noisy (IMO). I do a lot of low light work and would love to see improvements here.
A body price that is around the 1500 – 2000GBP level.
I don’t need more than 24mp but as has already been suggested maybe a way of fitting different sensors or buying “backs” would be good? This may be a red herring but all ideas should be considered.
No AA filter if possible without making it an infrared camera!
(no contradiction intended) The possibility to easily use it as an infra-red camera that switches back to normal use also would be welcome.
Perhaps a slimmer body that can have grips/drives added to boost performance; so for example, body only = single shot and a lowish burst rate and then grip/drive 1 giving a faster burst rate and grip/drive 2 giving a really high rate. This would make the camera truly adaptable and suited to many applications.
Weather proofing. My A900 is pretty good, but improvements are always welcome.
I know that lens requests weren’t invited but I would like to make a small plea for three things; 1) only black lenses (A & E), 2) more quality FF primes and 3) some compact high performance zooms (constant f4 would be nice, don’t need to be 2.8’s).
– Dual card slots (dual SD would do) – was quite surprised they didn’t do that on the A77 in the end…
– More options for what I can see live on the EVF and LCD. I want constant focus peaking (to visually confirm P-AF has the right target) and a histogram on the EVF and review on the LCD (see I can take my eye away and look if I want, but carry on uninterrupted if I don’t). – Can’t do that, even on A77
– An option to have the AF zone expanded during review. Panasonic compacts have had this for a while – you get a review of the of the photo followed by a 4x or 10x flash of the AF area to quickly see if it’s in focus.
– An implementation of this new RGB-W (Kodak Truesense) filter they have mentioned in their recent presentation… googled it and it looks awesome, would improve high-ISO and dynamic range..
– A larger, higher res, potentially touch screen (if I’m gonna pay 2k+ for a camera I want to be able to zoom and pan as well as I can on my £200 phone!)
” An implementation of this new RGB-W (Kodak Truesense) filter they have mentioned in their recent presentation… googled it and it looks awesome, would improve high-ISO and dynamic range..”
Yes, but I think the White pixels should be Yellow. This gives almost as much increase in light sensitivity (yellow is two thirds of the spectrum) but also adds more colour information, to suit the new large colour gamut printers.
I wonder if there is some way to randomise or dither the mosaic, instead of using the present regular pattern, so as to avoid moirees.
Hi,
Based on A77, i would like to have
1. Framerate control. (ex : limited to 2fps, 5fps, …)
2. Timer switch Trigger ( ex 1f/min, 1f/hour, …)
3. USB Control (like A700)
4. OLED display panel
5. built-In camera lens correction (software solution like DXO)
6. No IR filter ??
Thanks in advance
STEF
Optional contrast detect autofocus, ideally one that also works with screw-driven lenses (like the Nikon “tripod mode”)
classic FF camera with hybrid viewfinder system;
36MP sensor;
low ISO is very good;
ISO 3200 is accepted;
double cross AF points;
new 35/1.4 and 50/1.4.
Thanks.
With FF you definitely need two models, like the D3X and D700, one very high resolution primarily for studio work, and a second smaller, lower MP version for sports and more general use.
for example:
Studio camera: A99, 36MP FF SLT with possibility to flip mirror out of the way
Field camera: A88, 18MP FF SLT
Both with upgraded AF modules and full video recording features.
Thanks!
-Cross-AF sensors on the far sides (and possibly corners) of the image.
-Eye-detection focus (auto-focus on the eye)
-Tethered shooting with simultaneous storage to the memory card for backup
-ISO 50 or less for using f1.4 lenses in bright conditions without ND-filters
-Open up the TTL-protocol and hotshoe to third-party manufacturers, such as PocketWizard
-Removal of the AA-filter (doesn’t the SLT-mirror provide enough blur to produce AA?)
* CF card slot, just like the A77… oh wait…. Just like the professional cameras!
– Optical view finder
– Tethered shooting
– Time lapse photography setting
– Can be used in a studio just like the A55… oh wait… just like real cameras. (The A55 can’t be used in a studio unless you put a sock over the built-in flash)
– iso50 or less
– I like the idea of a replaceable / upgradeable sensor.
How about a built in ND filter and make the translucent mirror an active device that could reduce the amount of light in very bright conditions? Then a next generation could be even more flexible to allow a built in graduated filter to keep skies blue, deal with heavy back lighting and such like without fill flash or HDR.
Square sensor 36x36mm with 40MP.
+1
Great idea! Although, I’m pretty sure 36mmx36mm would fall outside the projected image circle.
Assuming I calculated things correctly, a 30.6mm x 30.6mm square would be ideal and the largest you could practically go before running into corner performance issues.
SO HOW ABOUT THIS:
MAKE THE PHYSICAL SENSOR SIZE 38mm x 31mm
A 38mm x 31mm sensor is just large enough accommodate a 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9 aspect ratio while retaining the original 43.2mm diagonal measure of the standard 36mm x 24mm sensor. This would be a true multi-aspect ratio sensor, and would allow you to shoot 1:1, 4:5, 4:3, 3:2, and 16:9 with out the need to crop. This means that regardless of the aspect ratio, you will retain the same pixel count. Also, the field of view will remain consistent…so say you used a 50mm lens, you would get the same 50mm field of view no matter which format you shoot.
Why 38mm x 31mm?
Because the sensor only needs to be as tall as needed for 1:1 format and only as wide as needed for 16:9 format.
And yes any current full frame lenses would be perfectly compatible. The light is already there, might as well make full use of it.
This is my wishlist for a new Sony SLT FF Camera is to have ALL A77’s specifications plus:
1. Improved A900’s IQ and DR
2. Improved RAW and JPEG noise (We need usable 12800ISO)
3. Detachable grip (please don’t follow Canon 1D or Nikon D3 on this)
4. Weatherproof (on body and lenses)
5. Magnesium alloy body
6. AMOLED bigger rear display
7. Lightning fast AF (please, beat Nikon’s AF)
8. More AF sensors (all of them cross type) and distributed throught ALL the EVF surface
9. Please, we need RAW-based histogram
10. To save space on the display, color and luminance histograms viewing should be selectable by menu
11. Touch rear display (as NEX 5n)
12. Plenty of customizable buttons (at least 3 of them)
13. A really BIG buffer (at least 50 RAW shootings)
14. CF and SD support (and you should be able to use BOTH cards simultaneously)
14. Please work with major software makers (DxO, Adobe) to really improve quality and color rendering (Ideally to support Creative Styles, DRO and so on)
15. Please, put a REAL PROFESSIONAL RAW software (Lightroom or DxO Optics) with the camera
16. In-camera customizable lens profiling (the user can make his own profiles to support Minolta G lenses)
17. Audio manual controls for recording
18. Tethered studio shooting, WiFi and/or Bluetooth support.
19. USB 3.0 support to hold high transmission rates
i have to disagree on #11, i’ll change settings with my face all the time i’m using the viewfinder then 😉
but i strongly agree with #15, and added support for raw conversion using different software.
NEX FF I also vote for!
But some small and good primes to use with it also.
And price under 2000$ for camera only.
Dynamic range and high ISO performance is important.
I don’t need more megapixels then 12 MP, but Sony knows more about what is best etc. So just make the dynamic range and high ISO performance good and I don’t complain.
In the A-mount, there should be both system avaiable.
Both SLT and traditional DSLR. At least for the high end models.
But… if the sensor technology and the SLT mirror and EVF gets very good,
maybe not. I let others decide.
Sony has to first fix some problems with the A77 before going to FF.
BUFFER must be bigger, not 1 second of shooting, at least 3sec at max (12fps or 10fps) burst speed
ISO performance from Nex-5N is better than A77, this is not right, should be the opposite
Support for tethered shooting
I would prefer, as a non-professional photo-video user,
1. the Nex-7 being equipped with the 35 mm cinema sensor from FS100 (best video quality possilble, as I often more focused on video then on photo).
2. the Nex-7 – like base, being equipped with the FF sensor, as low megapixel as possble, ideally about 10 mpixels, and thus providing the possibility for
– better video (less aliasing, lines skipping, less rolling shutter, etc)
– lower noise.
To Santa in Sony
1) Detachable Screen with bluetooth/wifi connected.
2) Build In WiFi. to transfer Photos.
3) Hybrid Viewfinder, EVF or OVF
4) Interchangeable mirror Type, Translucent or Tranditional Mirror
5) more interchangeable part, Sensor, Viewfinder, Screen. (like EPIC RED)
6) Detachable Build-in Flash.
7) Build in temporarily Flash drive,(in case emergency).
8) GPS camera traceable (if case camera got stolen/Lost).
9) superb ISO performance
10) environment sealed. water-proved.
11) Big Buffer so can shot more photo in high speed burst mode. instead depending on Cards speed.
12) Auto Battery Recharge, (shake to recharge? movement recharge? solar recharge?)
13) AUTO ISO mode in MANUAL mode.
14) User friendly button layouts. for easy access.
15) Grip customize-able , to get the best ergonomics
16) Scratch proved Screen.
17) Setting through PC/MAC, or downloadable from net.(shooting style)
18) Build-in Projector? to share photo with peoples.
HOW ABOUT a close co-operation with Adobe, Capture One, DxO etc to finally get some really good RAW-converters and color management for our ARW files?
increasing the post processing WORKFLOW will be the deal breaker/maker for many people that aim for pro camera systems out there…
and i’m currently getting a bit tired of dragging my ARW files through three different raw converters just to get the best color rendition for a specific situation… =/
1. OVF and EVF options for FF DSLRs – pros still want OVFs
2. NO AA FILTERS PLEASE!
3. High quality Leica M9 equivalent – NEX-9: perhaps a Fuji X100-esque hybrid viewfinder.
4. PLEASE invest in lens R&D as well as cameras – the best bodies are useless without comprehensive lens options.
5. EXPOSURE TO THE RIGHT HISTOGRAM-BASED METERING SYSTEM – it’s the 21st century and most of us haven’t built up habits with film cameras so stop hampering the potential of your sensors with obsolete film-centric metering…
6. Concentrate on sensors with medium format grade colour gradation/tonality as well as high ISO and dynamic range.
7. Sony please STOP considering the NEX system as purely an upgrade for compact users – the number of enthusiasts wanting to replace bulky DSLRS is undeniable.
8. EXPAND the E-mount lens line up drastically!
9. Actively persuade 3rd party lens manufacturers to make lenses for the NEX system.
10. A rear iphone sized touch screen retina display for checking focus.
11. Tilt-shift lenses for a-mount and e-mount which are made easier to use in live view by suggestion ’10.’.
“EXPOSURE TO THE RIGHT HISTOGRAM-BASED METERING SYSTEM – it’s the 21st century and most of us haven’t built up habits with film cameras so stop hampering the potential of your sensors with obsolete film-centric metering…”
Exposing for the highlights is the traditional method for film transparencies such as Kodachrome, so what you are asking for is indeed a film camera habit, and is correct.
The most important thing is to avoid burned out highlights. Black shadows are much more bearable.
No. That’s where you get a ton of noise. Because you inevitably end up using the “fill light” slider in lightroom.
I can recover two stops easily from an overexposed a580 or a850 image. If I’ve got a contrasty scene, I’ll expose for the shadows and let the highlights get blown. As long as they’re not more than two stops over, you can recover them perfectly, and have noise-free shadows.
I think that if you can easily recover the highlights, the image is not overexposed.
There might be blown out highlights on the JPG, but not in the raw. The thing to avoid is clipping in the raw image.
As for noise in shadows – that is a matter of reducing the noise from the sensor generally. Which no doubt somebody at Sony is working on day and night.
A fullframe NEX 9 for sure. good DR too. that are enough.
1. NO LOW PASS FILTER mounted on sensor, or at least option to buy different versions of the camera, either with or without a low pass filter
2. removal digital back (like medium format), various megapixel choices 20, 30, 40 or just a 40 or higher megapixel sensor
3. dedicated software containing lens and sensor calibration files etc (like Capture One software for Phase One medium format cameras)
4. removable IR/dust filter (like the Sigma SD1) if sensor mounted in camera body
First time I see a company asking to what its customers demand for an already planned product… (Next year supposed product)
I hope it is a joke…
If they really do that…
They will not be ready before 2015…
“I hope it is a joke…

They will not be ready before 2015…”
That’s OK. If I buy a NEX-7 this year, it will be 2015 before I can afford another camera. 😉
this is not an company asking and those wishes are dramatically unrealistiv. Folks if you want to be taken seriously say what you want but don’t wish things like complete modular DSLR or Sony giving up the Minolta Hot-Shoe.
1) Two Cameras, one for HighISO (18-24 MP) one for HighResolution (30-40MP)
2) SLT just if the EVF ist still improved
3) Bigger Buffer than Alpha 77 and dual Card-Slots
4) 10FPS with full control instead of 8 in the 77
5) AF in Video also in A, S, M mode if possible (not at f16)
6) Tetherd Shooting also for Video
7) new 35mm 1,4 and 50mm 1,4 SSM, 24-105mm f4 SSM or similar
8 ) Better AF-module
+1 for a full frame Nex, full manual control everything, photo/video/sound
I am a casual camera user, i don’t mind to spend some extra money but wish the camera meet the following:
* Price not more than 5D MKII body (current price)
* Compact like Nex-7/Leica M9 (Nex-7 looks like a good design), because as I say I am casual camera user. I don’t want to carry a big heavy camera like DSLR but at the same time I desire quality (that’s why I go for Nex)
* Flexible and easy to controls (more buttons like nex-7?)
* And of course, the most important Image Quality. For a FF camera, i hope it can meet 5D MKII
(maybe i am wishing too much :P)
I’d love a FF generally along the lines of the A77 specs but…..
…with the size and weight of the A77.
EVF (OVF is obsolete)
Tiltable EVF
24-30mp Low noise high ISO sensor
ISO 50 -ISO 3200 clean images
All AF points to be cross hair
Larger buffer and faster writing to card.
B+W filter with large dynamic range
Manual audio controls
WiFi
If possible, the ability to use the camera to take infrared images without having to do a permanent conversion. The Sony F717 had a “Nightshot” mode that allowed an R72 filter to be added to take infrared images at 1/60 sec.
With technological advances, doing something similar with full control of WB, shutter speeds and f-stop may be possible. I’m carrying two cameras everywhere at the moment, an A700 and infrared converted A200. I can only dream.
Forgot to mention.
Smart teleconverter x1.4 and x2 with pixel replacement technology so that the zoomed image has the same resolution and image size as the original.
Sony have that technology already.
I would very much like a DOF priority mode similar to aperture priority mode. In this mode you could specify that you would like to have X cm as focus depth and the camera would set the correct aperture according to the distance to the subject in focus.
And a similar functionality, a hyper focal aperture mode where the camera ensures that everything from the subject to infinity is in focus.

First of all:
– full frame nex camera, like nex 7
– interchangeable sensor and image processor for future enanchment
Best of all:
– an interchangeable (almost) circular sensor (diameter equal to the full frame sensor) so that the user could, every time, chose the aspect ratio he wants whit a selector. For example from 1:2 on orizzontal to 1:2 on vertical (in this case you don’t need to rotate the camera for vertical shot)
Canon user here, who likes the fact that Sony is willing to listen tu the users, and not only to the marketing department. I’m willing to move to Sony for the following features:
– 20MP max sensor (don’t need larger files, more expensive and heavier lenses, narrower aperture working range until diffraction kicks in, etc.)
– great per-pixel sharpness (50MP are useless if the image is soft at the pixel level)
– very good dynamic and tonal range (studio shots are my main application)
– very good ISO performance (I shoot weddings as my secondary application)
– optical viewfinder is welcome, EVF is OK if brightness compensation and other adjustemnts are quick
– fairly fast but very accurate autofocus (cross-type sensors stretched as much as possible across the frame; 7 will do if they’re well placed, don’t need 99 of them)
– not more than 6fps needed
– good auto exposure and decent auto-wb; intelligent auto-ISO option available
– decent battery performance (1.500 shots per charge minimum)
– customizable controls (eventually through PC-connection), at the level of every button, wheel direction, etc.
– dual card slots (CF and/or SD)
– color-accurate rear LCD with good viewing angles (no bigger than 3 inch)
– top LCD with detailed information, but easily readable
– very good grip (like Canon 7D and Sony A77)
– good in-body stabilization performance
What I do not care about:
– live view, movies
– scene modes
– wifi, apps, etc.
FF NEX type cam with microlens correction.
In camera timelapse capability would be nice.
Remote schutter by bluetooth and wifi, controling the camera with an ipad without cable
An App store? No one (except maybe Apple, and even then I think Sony is in the lead) has gone to greater lengths to prosecute those who dare hack their hardware products. Sony will not allow an App store — too much user control.
It’s not the next mainstream camera but, consider the possibility of:
– manual focus “Minolta X700”-like body;
– 10-12mp removable sensor (to have the freedom to use different sensors like it works for medium format digital backs);
– no AA-filter;
X-700 like? You mean you want the electronics to die? 😛
OVF
high ISO low noise
FAST autofocus
SD and CF compatible
PC controlable
1. It NEEDs to have optical viewfinder. Sony: it doesn’t matter if you think that your new super-futuristic EVF delivers quality as good as OVF. Camera still needs to have OVF. At least in one variant if you release few different FF cameras.
2. No AA filter – reduce moire digitally.
3. Release lenses. In 2011 we got only one, ONE lens so far which is a silly amount considering how far Sony is behind number of Canon and Nikon lenses.
3a. if we are on a topic of lenses: make at least one Tilt & Shift lens. Even if it won’t sell – just make it to remove one point from Canikon domination list.
4. Small size, very cheap camera would be most welcome by the customers, even if it’d be SLT with EVF and couldn’t catch up the quality of 5D MKII. Just make it as cheap as it gets. There’s a big chunk of advanced non-pro photographers who would like to have FF camera for good price without all the pro-oriented gimmicks.
5. People don’t need 40 MPx in every camera. One model with low MPx count (less than 24) but outstanding high-ISO would make more people happy than 10 different models with 30+ MPx.
6. If you make camera with fast FPS – make it fully functional, not like A77 12 FPS crippled mode.
6a. Also add BIG buffer to the camera if you add high FPS count. 2 seconds top-speed burst would be really useful for various reasons, even though I understand your reasoning behind limiting buffer to 1 second of shooting.
7. Add more than one double-cross sensor. The one in A900 was great, though we’d love to have them on sides too.
8. If you make SLT camera – try to use possibilities of this tech to get AF points on very edges of the screen. Not just covering 2/3 of screen.
9. If you make a really pro camera in SLT tech – add a flip-up shooting mode to remove any influence of mirror to picture quality (your new “coatings” won’t convince any pro shooter to a camera that has half-mirror plane between lens and sensor)
10. Full weather-sealing is quite obvious. And new weather-sealed lenses too.
Basically:
Make a camera basing on A900, not one basing on A55/77 – cause from what I see in rumors so far is that this is exactly the direction you plan to take.
Great ISO performance
and maybe movable sensor to increase (if neccessary) crop factor
Dear Sony, you really listen to us? so listen good:
– FF NEX
– 18 megapixel true color sensor
– useable output at ISO 25600
– 120 or 100 db dynamic range
– 10 fps
– 1080p120 for 30 seconds and 240fps for 15 second length
– phase change AF like Fujifilm EXR
– minimum DR lost in 100-800 ISO range
– articulated 2million dots LCD display
– let viewfinder stay at the left
– under $2000
Well: very nice they ask us!
Complete sealing of sensor by TL mirror
Easy changeable TL mirror (in ” casing” or something to allow this). This will take away fear of dust on the mirror will get in all the pictures
Weatherproof (on body, lenses and flash), not just the major buttons as mentioned for the A77 which also has a “no guarantee” text coming in the folder
Fast and accurate AF (Some A77 results until now not too promising on accuracy)
More AF sensors (all of them cross type) and distributed through ALL the surface
A really large buffer (enough for at least 5 sec but preferably more, RAW + JPEG shooting )
JPEG quality in RAW + JPEG mode choose-able
CF and SD and/or double SD (they are small anyway) support
If technically possible use of VR in lens and sensor at same time
Better high ISO performance (but starting to feel quite happy already)
All video options similar worldwide
Longer firmware support
Deliver the 1st one fast (use A77 body with full weather sealing?)
“Open” roadmap, to allow for clear decision making for customers about when to buy what.
Forgot the pixel binning option (stills and video)
1. Dont mind EVF as long as it has a mode that allows mirror lockup.
2. Lenses!
3. Higher dynamic range would be preferable to ‘higher pixel count than A77’.
4. More time spent on firmware (better noise reduction algorithms than current Sony cameras, etc).
And for the range overall:
5. Better support for Sony cameras in third party products (the camera default for most Sony cameras in LR are so bad that I no longer rely on them and instead always use a colour card to calibrate).
6. Better after sales support for older models (many Sony cameras have never had a firmware update, reducing confidence in the company).
7. Better Sony >> customer interaction (the Sony UK webcasts and A77 live QA should be a template for Sony Internationally – that US customers have to rely on the Sony UK pod casts is a case in point!).
8. Remove licensing for third party lens manufacturers by making the spec free (this will alleviate the perceived ‘lack of lenses’ issue across the range).
A Multi Aspect Ratio Sensor like Panasonic has in some models would be my favourite feature not only for FF, but also for APS. Shooting only in 3:2 is something of the past and just cropping doens’t make the best use of one’s pricey lenses.
Agreed! Multi-aspect ratio would be huge!
copied from my reply above:
Full frame equivalent to NEX-7, without anti-aliasing filter.
That would be my Leica-R digital. The only camera I personally really wish for.
FF NEX (highly preferable) or FF SLR. SLT is nonsense. You can get SLR speed (or almost) without mirror these days. If FF NEX it could be same design as NEX-7 with min ISO 50, wheather proof body and stabilisation. 24 mpx is MAX.
And, most important:
L E N S E S
What would I want in a new FF Sony:
– Optical Viewfinder (but we won’t get that) so improved EVF better than the a77
– Improved High ISO response (clean 25,600 without Multi-frame isn’t out of the question. Nikon does it!)
– TWO CF Card slots!!!! (programmed so when one card fills up, the other card takes the rest of the images)
– 8 to 10 FPS with a HUGE buffer (40+ shots in RAW before buffer fills & clears in under 10 seconds)
– Twin Bionz processors
– More cross-type sensors with a wider spread
– No SLT (but again that one won’t happen)
– Battery grip at least as nice as the one for the a900
– Weather & Dust sealed
– Same size as the a900
– Twin control dials like the a900
– Ability to set aperture & shutter speed in RAW and have camera pick ISO
– Improved audio controls over the a77
– Shutter rated to a minimum of 150,000 shots
– Usable in studio without jumping thru hoops
– PC teathering
– Better in-camera JPEG engine
– option to turn noise reduction competely off in JPEG and RAW (not just Low, Medium and High setting for NR but OFF!)
– Priced around $2,700 US
Would love to see a full frame DSLR that allows users to fully control exposure settings in video recording, more video resolution and frame rate options…
Hey,
Weather sealed Full Frame NEX !!
Sony, if you really are listening, thank you! I love the alpha mount and I’ve owned 3 of your cameras. My realistic wish-list for the new full frames:
a900 is an amazing camera, so that should be the foundation for its successor
EVF is fine by me. It has a ton of advantages that I am willing to embrace
24-30mp is enough. Adding more causes problems – noise, file sizes, buffering issues
The centre AF point on an a900 is incredible. More of those please!
The EVF should be customisable – zooming, peaking, aps-c/ff view with automatic cropping
Add proper weather sealing. The a900 is tough no doubt, but proper sealing would give so much more confidence
Basically, the foundations for the camera should be the same. Just give us improvements and updates in AF, speed etc. And give us lots of options – choosing the exact fps etc. a77 looks like a great camera – give FF users the same principles, based on the a900.
I didn’t read all comments so maybe these are already mentioned but here is my list:
VF:
• 100% view
• Option to show gridlines
• Option to show horizontal and/or vertical spirit levels
Body:
• Ability to lock control wheels ( while shooting in studio )
• Support for CFast cards ( and keep CF )
• Ability to save pin-code protected owner info
Battery grip:
• Relocate AF/MF button ( it’s just under my thumb in portrait mode )
I do not need:
• Top plate LCD
• GPS
• Video

Andrea,
isn´t it time for a poll again?
Yeha will do that soon!
i think andrea now is to collecting the potential idea to come out the poll list 😀
Remember to include option “I don’t care about video in a camera” 😉 hehehe
FF NEX is not for me, I would carry heavy lenses anyway (like 24-70Z and 70-400G) so I am a buyer for high end SLT
-High res, but also great high ISO performance (7500*5000 – 37,5MP looks nice 🙂
-Big, huge, outrageous buffer
-24 frames per second burst (if could last for at least 10 seconds) it would be ok even at half the resolution (guess like 18-20MP), it could also be implemented as high resolution video mode, than 12fps is ok for burst (mind the high resolution of FF)
-keep filming possibilities from A77, slow motion capabilities would be great at expense of shorter record time or even the resolution
-even better EVF than in A77 (which is great)
-2 memory cards simultaneous write to empty buffer quicker
-price up to 1.5x the A900
1. Nex style camera with a hybrid viewfinder.
2. SSS!!!
3. Next generation +40MP sensor with +16 stop DR
4. A version with just a B/W sensor
5. Tilt & Shift lenses and new SSM fast primes.
A new FF camera needs a full range of modern lenses
A full frame NEX 9 close to the NEX 7 but with electronic curtain, built in GPS and WiFi, huge buffer, tethered shooting (by WiFi and USB 3), interchangable scelled sensor (for sport, portrait, night, landscape, movie…), waterproof body, rechargeable battery in the device by the USB 3 … and a lot of small professional actually sealed (waterproof) lenses !
Removable Anti Alias Filter, or, a CTO option to buy the camera without an AA filter
customisable crop sizes eg, the camera still shoots a raw Full Frame, however, you can specify the viewfinder/exif data to show a 10×8, 5×4 etc crop.
An OLED viewfinder that looks as big as a Hasselblad H4D viewfinder, when you look into the eye piece
1. 24 to 36 MP, Top IQ, High DR
2. SLT Mirror lockup for manual focus without light loss
3. Big Buffer (atlest 4 seconds of 12fps high burst speed, 50 RAW Shootings)
4. Selectable fps burst rates
5. Time Lapse settings, frames/minute, frames/hour
6. No IR Filter, special NIR Mode
7. Usable 51200 ISO
8. a900 size, Magnesium Alloy, Weather Sealing,OLED EVF, Detachable Grip
9. Built-In Lense Correction, with 3rd party manufacture lenses supported.
10. Manual Audio Control, Headphone jack for monitoring
11. Dual memory cards, SD, Memory Stick, and Compact Flash
12. Customizable Buttons (atlest 3)
13. WiFi, USB3 connectivity for photo transfer
14. Tethered shooting, WiFi supported
15. GPS with camera traceing, theft prevention
16. Supported by Profesional RAW Software; Photoshop, Lightroom, DxO Optics
Are you really listening Sony??
All things the A77/A900 has and:
Creative lighting system (like Nikon has)
NR off button in menu
Clean Hi ISO (like Nikon D700: ISO 50 -ISO 4000 clean images)
A useful 10fps or higher (not just 1 second..needs big buffer)
All 20? AF points to be cross hair
Fast and accurate AF
AF Tracking for photos
Don’t mind SLT (as long there is no delay in the FV when shooting)
Two Card slots (SD or CF). One for JPG and one for RAW
PC tethering
WiFi and/or Bluetooth support
Continues and longer firmware updates and period
Quick navi (or a fast intuitive menusystem instead; Touch rear display )
Willing to pay max 2750$
and:
Let’s get pocketwizzard to give us Sony Hot Shoe ability too!
180 or 200mm f2.8 Marco
200 mm f2.8 tele
OK – I’ll try and keep it practical and keep it within the scope of the question (namely an SLT, and by implication, A-Mount FF SLR). It will also make use of the unique features of EVF & SLT so the OVF dinosaurs can look away).
1) install a 36mm x 36mm square sensor and electronically crop to multiple frame sizes without rotating the camera (so we can have portrait mode without rotating the camera). The square format would have to be cropped to about 30 x 30 to fit within the image circle (maybe 32 x 32 at a push). I’d expect (at least) landscape & portrait at FF, landscape & portrait at APS-C, square at 10 x 30 + square at 20 x 20 (for APS-C format lenses) – note this means a grip is unnecessary
2) an EVF to match this multi-format square sensor
3) SSS must still work
4) Scaling up the 16 MPiX APS-C sensor to 36MPiX would do (albeit the entire chip would need 54 MPiX). However, I’ve no issues about scaling up from 24 MPiX APS-C to 53MP.
5) 8 FPS at FF with 12 FPS at APS-C equivalent would do.
6) Lens Micro-adjust (of course)
7) An additional “ISO-less” exposure mode – that is running at base-ISO and allowing any combination of Aperture & Shutter speed With JPEGs digitally “boosted” to get the “exposure” density right (RAW software will do the same). The EVF will have to show clipped areas in highlights & shadows. Note that this requires a sensor with very low read noise and high DR, but the 16 MPiX Sony sensor in the A580 & D7000 can already do this, by manual means, over about a 6 stop range.
8) full tethered shooting
9) for the high-ISO buffs, produce lower res JPEGs (which decreases noise & increases
10) The move the SDHC/XC looks inevitable, but have at least two shots, allow alternating writes (to speed buffer flushing) and dual-writes (to provide protection from card corruptions). The camera should support
11) I’m not a real video-buff, but this ought to support all the HD modes up to 60FPS p 1280 x 1024. No regionalisation of 50 FPS vs 60FPS.
12) add support for auto-switching between stabilised lenses & in-body stabilisation without wrecking backwards compatibility of course…
13) get rid of the thirty-minute video recording limit (how much extra tax is it)
14) sensible support for external battery power for long shooting sessions (and video shoots)
15) enabling of auto-review should be able to be set separately for the EVF and the back panel
16) don’t go overboard on the weight side of things – some of the competition is more fitting to MF than 35mm
I’m not sure S
My first and for most advice and needs for a new FF is: Take all the Minolta lenses and REAL upgrade them (not just engrave Sony logo on them) with a fast SSM motor and higher glass grade. Make the 1635/2470/70200/70400 weather sealed. Make the 100f2.8 a none-extending macro lens (like Canon 100 2.8 L macro). Make a 10-16mm FF zoom fisheye f2.8 or f4. Make more tele-prime f2.8 /f3.5/f4 lenses (as of 200f2.8 – 400f4 etc.). Just give the pros more lenses and accessories options and that will help us amateurs more.
Why? Because as more pro will shoot with Sony that means Sony will stay longer in the DSLR business (learn from Minolta –great ideas and patents but never did rule the market and we all know where is Minolta now and how we all felt few years ago with all our Minolta glass).
For more pros to have a reason to shoot with Sony FF, the longer we amateurs will benefit and be happier here in this forum.
We all know/guess more or less that the new FF will be something like a A900 body with all new stuff++ of the A77 (stuff++ means – higher in all main parameters as MP/FPS/FP/AE/AF/WB/ISO etc.) – and it is funny for Sony to ask for points in this time when 99.99% of us never use the A77 to really see what we can wish to be better in a new FF.
I believe Sony will make a great FF as Minolta did at the time, with lots of pros photographers and magazines praising about – but they never really catch them as lack of GLASS and ACCEESSORIES.
+1 on that one.
Extending macros are generally a good thing. Internally focusing macros get progressively shorter focal lengths as they focus closer. eg. the 200mm macro has a focal length of about 125mm at 1:1 magnification.
Obviously this is assuming the telescoping macro lens doesn’t extend so far it hits the object you’re trying to photograph.
I have a very small and simple wish that is not only for the coming fullframe, but for all NEX, APS-C and fullframe.
A firmware update for all Alpha that shows a timer on the LCD screen when using long exposure and bulb mode.
I hate to bring a timer or digital watch when shooting long exposure or in bulb mode.
Even Canon 550D can do it, why not Sony?
+1 on timer
The Minolta 7 and 9000 both had that feature.
ALPHA 99 wish list
Stop the pixel race – 32 mega is good enough
BUT have each pixel physical size bigger ( EXMOR Reverse if possible)
Bigger Pixel physical size will lead to a higher signal/noise ratio and thus is THE ONLY SOLUTION to reduce noise in high iso (Bigger pixel = more photons per surface unit and reduced tunneling effect on sensor surface
KEEP THE A MOUNT Zeiss optics are incredible !!!!!
Ehanced B/W response by adaptation of Sensor Filter
THE ULTIMATE WOULD BE TO HAVE 1 SENSOR FILTER FOR IR, ONE FOR B/W and ONE FOR COLORS PIctures
Could be achieved with SLT + Movable mirror !!! – this could be summum of both modes
NO VIDEO MODE (You don’t go fishing with a riot gun …. )
Sony video cameras are the best anyway
KEEP the COMPACT FLASH card format ( ALL PRO FF have them)
TO REDUCE BUFFER COST
Have a decent buffer in the camera
HAVE IT EXTENSIBLE WITH MEMORY CARDS for the (few ???) ones that want more
Propose an adaptator for cinema primes on ALPHA A mount
the cinema industry would be more than pleased not to have to duplicate the lenses for set pictures and this would
ensure consistency between set pictures and filmed scenes.
SLT But with sensor on the reflective side of the mirror
SLT with hybrid visor (OPtical + AMOLED ) as on FUJI X100
(You will always need the optical details on the far background)
I wish to have a more rigid flash hotshoe and a more chemically stable electrical contact material. It is annoying to keep rub the contacts before using flash. All my Canon and Nikon friends tease on me.
A FF NEX with:
1) in-camera adjustable cropping (various formats, controllable in EVF) for the use of the APSC sized lenses
2) SSS
3) weather proofing
4) tiltable built-in EVF
A FF NEX with hopefully a 3rd generation EVF to bring it close to the A900 viewfinder.
Not too many gimmicks but a real concentration on the highest possible image quality and construction.
A low ISO setting would be useful to cut noise when shutter speed/aperture is not an issue (i.e. for tripod work on static subjects).
Continued ….

“NO VIDEO MODE (You don’t go fishing with a riot gun …. )”
-No Video simply means no sales in today’s DSLR market.
“HAVE IT EXTENSIBLE WITH MEMORY CARDS for the (few ???) ones that want more” – If it is fast enough to write to a memory card, why buffer is needed?
affordable tele primes
tilt-shift
2 card slots, not one card slot that can accept 2 different card formats
bulb mode put on the mode dial, annoying to keep rotate the dial from 1/8000 seconds to bulb mode
some customizable buttons
tri-navi system, some photographers need to control all shutter speed, aperture and ISO at once in a split of second.
=> “Capability to move up the semitransparent mirror to avoid the small light loss.”
Isn’t that a DSLR? 🙂
BR, bArt
Hahaha.. thought so too. 😉
+1 for a FF NEX!
– Body style and EVF as NEX7
– IBIS
– high dynamic range, 16 Mpix is enough
– removable/switchable sensor: 1 with high resolution, 1 with sensational high ISO (Nikon D3X – Nikon D3S)
– fast AF (as Olympus E-P3)
– better auto-ISO (selectable ISO range, selectable shutter speed range, selectable aperture range)
Realistic:
– NEX7 and A65 with that awesome 16Mpix NEX 5N sensor, please!
My wish list:
1) A mixture of the current A77 and A850/A900. Definitly not less!
2) 24-48 Mpix Exmor sensor technolgy used in Sony F65 (even if it is “only” extended to 24Mpix) it is worth this leading new technology.
3) AF phase detection module integrated on the sensor itself.
4) microAF fine tuning in “auto mode” (maybe in combination with a testpattern for autotuning).
5) AF fine tuning as a combination of lens-ID and major focus range steps (as decoded in zoom lenses or macros found in the lens rom) As the focus plane shifts in some lens cosnturctions this could be better handled to with the proposed combination.
6) Speed of max 8 or 10 frames is more than enough on higher pixel counts.
7) Live view at least on the rear screen
8) only cross sensors carefully spread over the frame, activated in groups (I guess the A77 has something similar now)
9) 5 F2.8 double cross (middle, up, down, left, right)
10) working aperture mode in combination with new EVF
11) noise reduction with controllable luminance and chroma noise control.
12) display of automatically calculated ISO value in “Auto-ISO mode”.
13) “Auto-ISO mode” in manual mode of speed & aperture
14) 2 slots for 2 memory cards (CF/SD/MS) (like in A850/A900) with automatic switching to the other memory card when one is full and a feature to write raw and jpegs on different cards.
15) USB3.0 with USB2.0 backward compatibilty
16) remote control of the camera like with A700/A850/A900
17) tethered shooting possibility (wired an wireless).
18) backward compatibility with A850/A900 system equipment.
19) A850/A900 control grip upward compatible with A99 (maybe with less features but still usable)
20) same FM500H batteries to be compatible (at least from the form factor, even if a new accu generation might have more mA/h than FM500H)
21) if SLT technology will be used, than still to have the option to move the mirror up manually with no phase detection AF, but contrast autofocus or manual focus (could be interesting for landscape or still fotografers)
22) I want all features ot the A77 in the future A99
23) Even a A77 with A900 sensor and “just” max 10/fps in an A900 housing would be very nice.
24) TIFF output file format.
25) RAW, cRAW, TIFF & jpeg file formats
26) additional color spaces like “wide gamut” or others like in the Sony F65.
And Sony PLEASE upgrade the firmware of all your cameras with Af fine tuning capabilities available through the menu, like on the A850/A900 (at least for 5 or ten lenses). Don’t forget to add it also to the A65 as firmware upgrade! PLEASE!!!!
@fotowolf61, firstly, NICE post! As for your points..
3, 4, 5, 21 – yes Phase Detection AF in the sensor would be great as you say you could then flip the mirror up allowing all of the light to the sensor while still having the AF.
6 – couldn’t agree more, and I ask everyone else out there whether the difference between shooting 10 fps and 12 fps+ makes a trememdous difference when you could just shoot HD video and be done with it. I definately wouldn’t want Sony to sacrifice any image quality for the sake of an additional 2 or 4 fps. etc.
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 – definately!
24 / 25 – I see where you are going with these and I would like them, but they would be lower priority for me. As long as the file is RAW and works well with Lightroom/PS then I’m happy.
19 – would be nice (to save on expense!) but for me I would add point 27) here and request Sony release a FF camera with integrated Vertical Grip. Having a separate VGrip causes a lot of dead space which Sony could use to house separate memory card slots and other goodies etc. etc.
11 – yes controllable noise reduction would be good, while Sony have undoubtedly improved the NR in the newer cameras the detail loss is a little too much for me (personally) and I would prefer a slightly grain-ier/noisier but detailed shot.
1 & 23 – hell yes, A77 with updated A900 sensor, lower noise, integrated vertical grip, the pro/studio features (flash/thethering) etc. updates to newer tech (USB3 etc.) would be the ideal package for me!
James
If the PDAF is on-sensor, there’s no need to flip the mirror up because such a camera would not have a mirror anyway.
27) I forgot to mention the electronic shutter from the A77 ! 🙂
…and yes; if you have Af on the sensor, you have a NEX with phase-detection AF and no mirror in between.
Needs to be a Canon 5d mark 3 killer when it comes to video.
Solid weatherproof body and new weatherproof lenses.
Wifi, usb 3. Articulating touch screen.
Probably high iso, high fps, low about 20-25mp version and high Res 35-40mp version.
tethered shooting particularly with high Res version.
– Android/iPhone Remote viewfinder support a la https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller
– Panorama helper by showing the previous photo in the electronic viewfinder and using the GPS and compass for directional alignment.
– Ability to group images which “belong together” with a marker in the metadata (panorama, HDR etc)
– Mirror flip-up optional
SLT FF? OK, but then with the new idea suggested by some guy (sorry, forgot).
Not passing 70% of light to the image-sensor, but reflecting 70% of light, and passing through 30% of light to the AF-sensor.
Further: 10frames/second (is enough IMO) with full continuous AF under all conditions.
Not sure for the amount of pixels, but 32MP should be fine I guess.
But high-ISO/low-light performance and dynamic range performance should be stellar! 🙂
B.R. bArt
Not only come out with high end FF, but also budget FF.
I think this will increase market share also.
(Actually, I am the one who want FF but no budget, lol)
+1
+1
and +1 for one earlier post which mentions the phase detection AF inside the sensor, or, if not possible, flip-up mode and CDAF
If possible enhance the video capabilities (also with the A77 ;o)). I know the pros will cry out loud “go buy a camcorder, this is a photographic tool!” – well maybe for you; I think the more the better, the borders between foto and video have been melting anyway…so why not merge them further and be the best and most affordable on the market. I know lots of people would love that!
Oh, and don’t listen to the NEX-guys, keep the A-mount!
Dedicated send to Facebook button and built in filter effects.
No RAW!
Oh you~
get a phone with tiny camera
No RAW,
What an idot!
That like say I don’t want a quality image that can be controlled using software
If you don’t need or want RAW don’t select it in the menu
You obviously have no sense of derision.
I agree with just about everything most of the posters write with exception to those that don’t seem to care about image, performance our ergonomics but just want it to be cheaper.
If you want a cheap camera to post to Facebook buy something else as this is not about you, or your needs it’s about what a high quality professional type camera should be, and what most of us hope that Sony will market on the high-end of their product line.
Sony make many other cameras that cater to the mass market.
1. Autofocus with PASM-controls in video.
2. Programible timer for timelapse series.
3. Swich AF/MF modes, while Video recording, or more exended focus control in video (such as limitation range)
4. Much bigger frame buffres (up to 50-100 frames in RAW)
+1 for #2
I really like the idea of an APP-store!! If the firmware would be based on an open standard, or some kind of Software Development Kit would be provided, imagine the world of possible applications … Enough smart people outside of Sony to develop new, smart, handy, unexpected or just funny applications. In the end Sony could benefit from this by incorporating ‘essential’ new apps in their future products.
Also the idea of a B&W sensor is quite intruiging, but maybe the market for such a sensor is too limited. For increased dynamic range: what if a new sensor would be developped that mimicks the way the human eye works, with two kinds of pixels: one sensitive for color (like human cone-cells) and the other specialized for low light (like human rod-cells)?
I find my A900 has aged very gracefully, all considered, but there are still quite a few things that can be improved upon. Many of these are already on the A77, and will likely be kept on a future A99 anyway, but I’ll list them anyway;
1) No (or removable) AA filter.
They make sense on lower res cameras, but not some hulking 30+ megapixel beast. Moire can be filtered out in photoshop anyway. My dream is an Alpha mount camera with the pixel level resolution of the Pentax 645D.
2) Inbuilt flash.
Doesn’t need to be a good one, but it’s very nice to have in case of emergency.
3) EVFs should be usable in vertical position.
I’m not exactly jumping with enthusiasm about electronic viewfinders, but as someone who does a lot of manual focusing, focus peaking will probably win me over in the end. But if you’re going to use an EVF, there’s no point in fixing it in place, pentaprism style. Make it rotate in an arc so you can shoot vertically through it.
4) Lockable DOF preview
One of the main appeals of larger sensor cameras is thin depth of field. Being able to adjust focus and aperture without holding down a button the whole time would be nice.
5) Put the camera on a diet
Having large hands, I don’t actually find the A900 overly big, but it sure can get heavy if held for long periods, especially with a long lens on there. It would be great if you could cut, say, 100g off the weight.
6) Button customisation
With only one custom button, I end up menu diving more than I like. You should let people reprogram all the buttons to their tastes.
7) More AF coverage
It seems even the brand new A77 suffers somewhat here. It’s not so much a problem of inaccurate AF as not having enough of the image covered with points resulting in it not focusing on your subject. No one is expecting 100 AF points, but the days of having three little clusters of points and the remainder of the image bare of them really need to come to a close.
8) Double cross sensors are good
This is one area where Minolta’s AF system has it over Canon and Nikon. They’re much better when shooting at wide apertures than standard cross sensors are. I’d like at least three of these.
9) More than three stops of exposure compensation
Having to switch to manual when shooting in difficult light, using adapted lenses, trying to balance flash or intentionally misexposing is a pain. Similarly, more flash exposure comp range as well.
10) Quarter stop adjustments
Amazingly, the Minolta 9000 from 1986 had this, but it has disappeared from all cameras since. I’d love to be able to control the aperture in 1/4 stop adjustments.
11) If it has a GPS, let the camera be trackable
Theft happens, unfortunately, even to expensive cameras. One of the great bonuses of having a camera that knows where it is is being able to use that to track it down. It’d totally be worth the added cost of a cellular or wifi unit to be able to send your camera’s location to your computer/smartphone.
12) Aperture, shutter speed, ISO. Why only two command wheels?
I change ISO a lot, and having to push a button every time is a real pain, especially as I find the placement of the A900’s ISO button to be awkward. I really wish cameras would have three command wheels, as then I wouldn’t be fighting with menus so much.
13) Whether sealing; rain is the main concern
My A900 has been rained on, despite my best efforts to prevent that. Sometimes rain comes on very quickly, and sometimes the shot you want happens when it’s raining and you have no choice but risking your camera for it. Making a camera so well sealed it’s submergible like some Olympus’ is a nice party trick, but ultimately of little for most photography. But on the other hand, true and dependable rain shielding, such that your can keep on shooting without even bothering with an umbrella, would be a major plus.
14) Vertical tripod socket
When you’re using a telephoto with a tripod collar, shooting vertically is no problem. Just rotate it. But if you’re using a smaller lens without a collar, things become much more awkward. A second tripod screw on camera would fix that.
15) Zone metering overlay
If you’re using an EVF, it would be immensely helpful for shooting in contrasty and difficult lighting if you could overlay how far away various parts of the image are away from middle grey.
16) Eyepiece hood that doesn’t interfere with the auto sensors
It’s easy and cheap enough to attach a Minolta EH-7 eyecup to an A900, but they’re very old designs and interfere with the eye-start sensors and get in the way of the screen. It’s time to design one suitable for the modern age. Something copied over from Sony’s professional/cine video camera line might be nice.
17) Less shutter lag
Without a mirror to flip up there should be way less of this, but you haven’t taken advantage of it yet. Shutter lag is a real nuisance for for street, portraiture and sport photography.
18) Keep making cameras with strong colour filters
Don’t follow Nikon and Canon in sacrificing low ISO picture quality for the sake of an extra half stop or so at the upper end.
19) Time to move up to 14 bit RAWs.
I know the difference between 12 and 14 bit is slight, but I do get a bit of false contouring on smooth gradients like skies. A 14 bit mode, even if it’s locked to a slower FPS rate, would be welcomed.
+ 1 Carl. But, for priority I really, really want FF NEX with in-body stabilization- that’s #1, and #2 would be a trick LCD like in the A77, #3 is built-in pop-up flash, # 4 removable AA filer.
Tri-navi in NEX-7 may solve your problem #12
I have an a900 and it is the best camera I have had (and I’ve used plenty). I just want a a900 with a new sensor with better high ISO capabilities and better AF while tracking moving subjects. It doesn’t need anything else. I would like it a bit lighter weight and smaller than the A900 (the size and weight of the Minolta 7 film camera would be good). I would like to see the ISO in the viewfinder. I’d like another playback view that shows the photo full size on the LCD with blinking highlights and shadows in addition to the current small view with the histograms next to it. I’d like live view, but the slow AF off the sensor is fine (but give me MF with peaking). Don’t want video. If there is only a SLT, I’ll stick with my A900 as long as I can keep it working.
Love to see the Zeiss partnership extended and sony make a digital Zeiss icon http://lenses.zeiss.com/photo/en_DE/products/ikon/zeiss_ikon_camera.html with a dedicated A-mount adaptor or available in A-mount as well as M-mount.
on the mirror less camera route I would love to see a mini technical camera, tilt shift for every lens perfect studio , architectural camera, with wireless connection/control to a tablet device that’s one big ground glass.
an A-mount FS-100 shaped camera with modules like side grip and view finder to set it up for stills or other modules to set it up for video.
I do love my big bright optical view finder in my a900.
just my ramblings .
FF NEX with:
* Internal image stabilisation
* “foveon” style sensor 20-30Mpix is plenty. Actually, I don’t care what technology, but something that has more per-pixel quality and smaller files than Bayer
* Micro lenses or whatever is needed for low colour cast with M mount lenses
* Manual coding of non Sony legacy lenses? (probably not possible, but via a purpose built coding adapter thingy ???)
* No AA filter (moire removal in JPGs for the whiners)
* ISO 25 – 3200 (plus any marketing high ISO delirium needed to sell the camera, I won’t hold a grudge)
* High dynamic range (not mutli-frame simulation, naturally high well depth and very low noise in low light at base ISO).
* 14 bit RAW
* Slightly larger than NEX-7 but same shape (ie, fat grip, slim body, EVF at top left, not in middle).
* No translucent mirror. Olympus has shown that AF can be very good without.
Small flange distance to remain compatible with M-mount, M42, Leica screw …
* High accuracy focus peaking and AF.
* Great colour accuracy.
* “Expose to the right” exposure mode.
* At least one frame per second, possibly 2 😀
* And … dare I ask … a VERTICAL VIEWFINDER (or one that can be rotated). Most of my shots end up vertical. Fuji has wonderful 645s like that in the past.
To sum up, a modern day Mamiya 7, the best camera ever created 🙂
Guys, you can stop, I’ve done it 😉 😉
Thank you Sony 🙂
1. Night vision capability.
2. Motor zoom lenses like on the micro four thirds format.
3. external connection for external batter packs.
4. remote wifi viewer for computer/iOS/android viewing.
5. full manual control video like on current APS-C cameras
6. All current features of A77 i.e. GPS, OIS etc…
1) 16 mpx with superb ISO
2) App store 🙂
3) Introduce 16bit RAW and 10 bit AVCHD (MP4 already has it)
1) +1
2) nope…
3)+1
sensor shift
1) 24MP Sensor with a size of 30x20mm. Not as large as FF, but large enough to achieve great image quality.
Lower resolutions for JPEGs should be 18MP, 12MP, 8MP, 5MP.
2) Dynamic range should be at least 14 stops (±7 stops from 18% grey), WITHOUT HDR trickery.
3) 8fps with auto-focus between the shots
4) 45 AF points, all cross-type
5) Lens mount made of Titanium (A-mount, of course)
6) 2.5K 16:9 video (2560x1440p), with up to 120fps. Frame-rates include European and US rates – 24, 25, 30, 50, 60, 72, 96, 120.
Should this be the top spec for AVCHD 3.0?? wishfull thinking…
7) 3.5″ capacitive Touch-screen with 960×640 resolution. Capable of doing Touch shutter, just like the Olypus EP-3.
8) LCD hood accessory for transforming the LCD into a kind of viewfinder.
9) 1.8″ SSD SATA3 slot (64GB, 128GB, 256GB)
10) Option to turn-off Noise Reduction completely
11) 3-way hinge mechanism for the LCD, just like in the A77.
12) 60s – 1/8000 sec Shutter, with Bulb mode
13) ISO range of 50 to 25,600
14) USB 3.0 and ThunderBolt ports. Should have an option for clean Video-out through the ThunderBolt port.
15) Electronic level on the LCD
16) GPS with quick-fix and 1 meter accuracy.
17) WiFi control from PC, iPhone, Android, WindowsPhone7.5
18) Adjustable gain control for mics
19) 30Wh Li-Polimer battery
Last, but not least – a new fast zoom lens. Something along the lines of 18-85 f/2.0.
The price for the body should be around $1600.
Price for 64GB 1.8″ SSD should be $100.
Price for 18-85 f/2.0 lens should be $800.
————————————————————-
Total cost to start shooting: $2500
> Price for 18-85 f/2.0 lens should be $800.
You’re dreaming.
a99/a88 high/low MP SLT,what ever you have planned…
but what I want is:
NEX 7 FF(NEX 9)touch screen, EVF, full customizable buttons, apps/plugins, WiFi(simple connection to ipad/tablets/laptops/networks),WiFi off camera flash, usb3, RAW/jpg/jpg xr/tiff(jpg xr/tiff for HDR & lossless[10 quality levels])
I also wanted to add:
20) Besides JPEG and RAW, the cam should also have JPEG-XR format.
21) The “AVCHD 3.0 spec” that I mentioned in #6 should also include 10-bit color option (4:2:2).
22) I didn’t exactly mention this, but I don’t want a ViewFinder at all.
The LCD should be good enough, even in a hot sunny day. The hood accessory that I mentioned can be used if the situation really calls for it.
23) Video recording time should be limited by free space on the SSD drive.
To track subject using tele, view finder is more convinience than screen.
+1
24) Time-lapse feature
everything the competitors have, but better, and cheaper.
Here are my “votes”
– UserData written to RAW File (Copyright)
– GPS
– WIFI
– Tethered Shooting
– 24-50 Mio Pix
– Less Noise (always a point)
– 2 Memory Card Slots (one for JPG, one for RAW)
– USB 3
– ISO 25-102.000
I second FF NEX, with Video and GLOBAL Shutter. Not more Pixels than the Nex 7.
I like the idea of something like a Alpha FF Back (with video capabillitiy) for the ALPA TC 😉
I think every manufacturer has high tech camera technology but still yet to fulfill users/pro-user requirement. Why? Because most of them still having traditional concept of camera. Now is cyber-age. Camera must be on par with cyber-age. Sony has a good start by calling their compact as Cybershot. Now they need to move up the camera to match the name. In my opinion, camera should have the following features:-
– NEX like mirrorless fullframe camera.
– Has a lot of control like NEX7.
– Weather Proof and can withstand extreme weather.
– EVF
– Keep the new manual focus assist feature.
– Articulate LCD panel.
– Tweaked Sensor
* to allow fast AF like EP-3.
* allow using high f/stop without introduce diffraction to allow camera to take sharp high f stop picture.
* high dynamic range like Medium Format.
* great luminosity and color (better than Foveon sensor)
* ability to customize sensor. for example, add/remove AA filter.
* ability to change sensor. just like changing film.
* able to fully appreciate m-lenses. Sony should make m->e mount adaptor available with enhanced features rather than 3rd party adaptor.
* high resolution
– release SDK to encourage user/developer for support of Sony Raw format or have option of using DNG.
– Customizable firmware
* release SDK to allow use programable firmware/features… just iPhone/canon 5d.
* have app-store to purchase/download installable enhancement… just like iPhone
* programmable image processing logic. Let user decide how they want to process the captured signals (RAW).
* in-camara distortion correction.
* having technology/algorithm like Hasselblad multi-shot or phaseone 40+ sensor to provide super resolution/DR shot.
– Professional video capturing capability.
– available tilt-shift capability.
– have feature to support time-lapse capture.
– have feature to scan/capture document/business card/whiteboard etc.
– ability to export pdf format.
Basically, give more opportunity to user to decide what they want. Not all user will like the same camera… but most user will be willing to customize the camera to their need, if the camera allow.
the programmable feature should be made available in the next NEX firmware upgrade. 😉
a. a decent hotshoe…metal..no plastic!
b. a decent hotshoe adapter to standard ISO hotshoe…there are no flash remote triggers that fit Minolta’s hotshoe…therefore sony is in disadvantages in studio
c. in the case the use an electronic viewfinder…offer several options ( virtual…naturally) of focusing screens…given pros need several focusing screen types.
d. weather seasing…but REAL weather sealing….like Pentax!
e. 250.000+ shutter life…as ANY pro camera…
f. be imaginative with the x-sync… offer true solutions for X-syncronization…
g. MAKE A SYSTEM…like in the old times….just have a look in the 1980’s minolta catalogs and you’ll see Bellows…finders…lots…LOTS of lenses..etc
h. ( as a personal favor): i’m fed up of having to convert my Rokkor lenses to A mount…we need a new 50mm f:/ 1.2… let’s say we need an updated prime…with all the stuff 1000+ usd lenses have…
i. Last but not least…. beggin offering PRO SUPPORT… noone that lives off a camera will wait a week to have its sensor cleaned…
+1 for customizable firmware
+2
Do u mean this adapter?

First wish…don’t take forever on bringing out a new FF no later than Mid 2012.
High ISO ability on par or better than the d3s
Dual CF card slots. We don’t need sony card slots on the professional cameras.
This is for all Alphas the ability to tether to a computer while shooting.
Weather sealing.
RAW in video.
Live view
focus check on Manual lenses
Keep the pricing around the A850.
The only way Sony can compete with Canon and Nikon is release a FF that has an extremely high image quality and colour accuracy up to ISO 6400 and be able to push ISO 102,000.
Forget about 36+ Megapixels, it could be a 20 Megapixel FF just needs to be large good quality pixels on a good quality sensor. Bigger pixels, not more pixels.
Last but not least, improved AF, new FF needs 51 cross points.
I have an Alpha 700 and Alpha 900, thinking about getting the Alpha 77, but I need to see Sony moving in the right direction. I’ve heard people mention that the Alpha 77 isn’t as good as the Canon 7D which i’ve used before and works well with studio lighting. In my opinion, it looks like Sony is going after the entry level market (which is the largest portion) and more and more people are buying DSLR’s even willing to spend $1000 for just the body is amazing, but they need 3-5 REAL PRO CAMERAS to prove they are still Minolta brand somewhere in the SONY line.
I would spend $5000-$7000 on a REAL SONY PRO DSLR….built it and i’ll buy it.
Next Sony FF camera…
1 ) Should be relatively small, NEX-7 style.
2 ) Should be mirrorless. If thats not possible SLT is fine but ONLY with mirror moving up like in traditional DSLR. If thats not possible too then it should use traditional mirror.
3 ) Should have even better EVF than A77 has – at least 2x higher resolution, unnoticeable delay/lag in low light, dynamic range comparable to OVF. If thats not possible then it should use OVF or at least hybrid VF.
4 ) Should have 16 mpix sensor. If it has to have more mpix then no more than 24.
5 ) Should have Dual memory card slot: CompactFlash for backward compatibility and SD to be compatible with current cameras.
6 ) Should take at around 1000 pics on one battery charge.
7 ) ISO range 50 – 16000 and excellent noise handling (keeping as much details as possible even if it means more visible noise).
8 ) No movie recording, no smile shutter, face detection and other things that belong to entry level cameras.
9 ) Each and every button should be customizable. Wheels too.
10 ) IBIS, GPS geotagging.
11 ) Weather sealed body and lenses.
+1
1.FF NEX with 14Bit RAW or 16Bit RAW Output
2.No more TLM FF camera(APS-C only be preferable)
3.High contrast and high resolution and easy changeable brightness EVF
4.Built-in camera lens correction
5.No Low Pass Filter
6.Extremely low noise up to ISO1600
7.FF NEX with stabilizer body inside
Oh, and…
12 ) LiveView
13 ) Articulated LCD like A77
😉
Give us those 14bits nikon has with SONY SENSORS!!!
I know you can! You could even make it 16bits.
Apart from that, stop the megapixel war (or solve the diffraction problem, I know there’s a patent from sony).
I agree with most of the suggestions above.
For A-Mount:
* Optical Viewfinder (possibly even brighter than that of the a900, cf. Leicaflex SL2)
* No Blurr-/Antialias-/Moiree-Filter
* Level in Viewfinder
* A fast way to change settings (e.g. to change from f/8 down to f/1.4)
* Fast analogue-like/real-time metering, shown in the view finder with a large indicator display (+/- 8 EV or so; cf. Leicaflex SL2): I want to point the metering spot to the brighest spot in the image, pan the spot the darkest point, see immediately how the exposure changes in real-time, set the exposure time/aperture accordingly manually, press the shutter release.
* Two Card Slots (SD and CF), automatic switch between them if one card is full.
* Tethered Shooting (lost with a77)
* Reversible sense of rotation for setting wheels
* No Video
* Get the metering switch back (lost with a77)
* Get the Quick-Menu back (lost with a77)
* LiveView would be a nice-to-have
… and a FF NEX-9 (SteadyShot INSIDE), please, for my vintage glass… 😉
Make it the most high tech camera so far:
1. The A77 design style body with capacitive Touch screen!!
2. Dual SD card and Dual Micro SD card slot, yes that’s FOUR cards as cam has bigger body, made Micro SD cards RAID like to increase speed in continuous shoot. (Forgot about CF card, thats HISTORY!)
3. Bluetooth or Wireless USB connection can be install on battery grip that allow camera to beam images to notebooks and pad devices even phones. Also allow pad and computer devices to Control the camera.
4. The mirror flip up mode. (means we want a NEX like capability.)
5. lower mega-pixel count: 32 mega-pixel should be enough, but back lid.
6. more buffer memory, say 512 MB fast ram minimum.
7. 1280X1024 class internal LCD view finder.
8. E-ink like external colour LCD, which works under strong sun light with no back-light.
9. Customisable 8 setting function dial wheel.
1.Rangefinder!!! maybe Contax looks 🙂
2.support N-mount or A-mount or E-mount prime lens!
3.high ISO ability that beats Nikon D3 series!!
I’d like them to keep a model with an OVF–they have the best OVF of any FF camera, IMO, so no reason to kill it (even if they do make the best EVF’s too).
If not, I’m sure my a850 will last a long long time anyway.
please please please a model with A900´s OVF.
I support one of the CAL’s point:
“having technology/algorithm like Hasselblad multi-shot or phaseone 40+ sensor to provide super resolution/DR shot.”
That means I prefer Sony to make a same resolution sensor for 24MP only. I think that’s the key of keeping image quality for a larger surface area per pixel. 24MP is far beyond for general consumers’ need up to this year. The old version 24MP just need improvement on injecting EXMOR technology and yield a higher dynamic range. Frankly, when I saw the image sample from A77 I really think that it is not a good idea of seeing in too close (100%). The smearing effect is really too obvious on this over high-density monster.
The other ideas are simple. GO mirrorless and providing an optional mirror box to adapter Alpha lenses is good enough to maintain the different needs of user. The flexibility should benefit Sony for mass production on a single body. If 24MP is not “Pro” enough, then let the 32/36/40MP sensor made by order. Sony can use the same design mirrorless body for implanting different megapixel sensor. This should be a perfect plan to satisfy both consumer level user and the professional photography to enjoy FF with the optimum resource. I believe both party know what they need.
The last thing is developing higher FPS rate for HD movie recording. We are still long for 720p@120fps. That should be perfect if 1080p@120fps is supported. Slow motion is the last boundary of creativity for consumer.
Cheers!
Please keep tethered shooting for the studio!
A77+
Already mentioned:
CF slot
Fast wireless file transfer and camera control
Dial for settings recall (at least 3 MR as in A900)
Sensor tilt-shift
Not mentioned:
Electronic TC in RAW for fast shutting and extended series
Image correction tools (ala post-processing in camera)
A few requests to Sony (no particular order);
1. 2 card slots (CF & whatever -CF/SD/MS)
2. High ISO mode with auto pixel binning to lower res for lower noise (eg 30+ -> 24 Mpix) or deeper well depth
3. Electronic shutter for faster flash synch (1/500 like Nikon D70s). A77 is half way there
4. ISO 50 (or lower)
5. 100% camera control in tethered mode not limited like A900
6. Metering overlay/display like Dynax/Maxxum 7
7. Actual DOF distances shown with ‘D’ lenses like Dynax/Maxxum 7
8. add TIFF to current RAW, cRAW & JPEG
9. Keep the natural skin tones from the A900/A850!
10. OVF (not going to happen but I can wish)
Off topic but please also have more power ratio control settings on flash units. Go to 1/128 instead of stopping at 1/32. Current 1/32 is way too limited for daylight fill flash.
Thanks Sony
What I would like on the next FF camera
1. Same battery format as the A850 A77
2. Better mounting for tripods
3. Compatible with existing accessories
3. Get rid of the in camera memory (no CF no SD) just a buffer like 8-16GB
Add an external wifi/wimax,bluetooth what ever connector to an external storage
Make it possible to save to 2 or more for backup or allow these devices to sync,
4. Iso 50 would be nice or lower
5. Weather sealed body
6. Panorama mode (in RAW)
Yes obviously great image quality and the best viewfinder possible
How about a built in interval timer. wish the a77 would have had this as other brands have included it for quite a while and very useful.
NEX 9 with:
~ image stabilization built in
~ excellent hi IS performance , even if you have to go with a smaller MP sensor
~ 3.5″ lcd
~ continue with creative filters (color filers especially, with adjustable color variation??)
~ apps store
~ built in flash (as a back up flash)
~ super fast start-up, AF, with shortest release time lag
~ USB 3.0
~ weather sealed
~ if GPS, let the camera be trackable
I almost forgot, one of the coolest new features by a new company Lytro, adjustable focus after the photo, that would be red hot!!
http://www.digitaltrends.com/photography/lytro-the-camera-that-could-change-photography-forever/
Lytro’s adjustable focus system only gives you low resolution images.
and PRO support service!!
My dream camera would be:
– fully weathered and sealed body in the size of NEX-7 (mirrorless design)
– full frame sensor with the resolution of >16 <24 MPix
– doesn't need to have built in viewfinder of any sort
– fixed OLED touch-screen covering whole back of the body
– it must have full blue-tooth support for the HMZ-T1 3D head-mounted display, which serves as viewfinder and remote body controller
– body design must be ambidextrous, i.e. exchangeable grips, which are switch-able from right to left, lens mount precisely in the body centre
– iconic-touch-buttons, which are fully positionable across OLED touch-screen
– open source, app-based software support
– battery with very decent capacity and support for tethered solar-panel-based power source for landscape works (I hope SONY will develop such one)
– built in GPS, fully switch-able on/off
– standard PASM modes, intervalometer
– no need for video-recording
Take the A900, KEEP THE WONDERFUL OVF, and improve the following:
– noise and dynamic range of the sensor (but keep it at 24mp)
– more advanced AF system
– much bigger buffer and 2x dual core processors for the ability to review images, adjust settings, and keep shooting
– ability to write images to dual UDMA CF card slots in parallel to speed up buffer flush times
Don’t take away the OVF! That’s the best thing about using an A900! If you want to put in an EVF, put it in a separate model.
+1
And also do the same to a comparable sibling like an A700 equiv.
– FF-Nex
– built in image stabilisator
– exellent high iso performance
– weather sealed
If SONY is really going to listen, for what it is worth, here is my wish list. It is NOT very grandiose, and from everything that I have read about the a77, the pressure will be on SONY to make a FF body that turns on the coffee maker, and says HELLO to you when you turn the thing on. At any rate, I am going to be delude myself into thinking that there may be others out there something like myself, who just want a very solid, simple, uncluttered NO NONSENSE camera, instead of a photographic version of a Swiss Army Knife. My WISHES:
1) 16 ~ 18 FF sensor for excellent IQ.
2)Dual cards that switch automatically upon filling.
3)NO Video
4)ISO ranging from 25~6400
5)Tethered shooting ability
6)OVF
7)PC socket for connection to studio lighting
8)Solid construction like a900
9)Good looks of the a77
10)Vertical grip built in with all controls.
11)ON/OFF switch for NR
12)Less Menu, more tangible knobs, switches etc. as in Maxxum 7D (Not likely to happen)
All right, laugh if you must, I just don’t feel a really strong urge to buy features that I will NEVER use, and will increase the likelihood of malfunctions that will hinder the good operation of the camera.
+ 1
I just wish super iso performance, better than the Canon 5D mark III.
And maybe a low- and a high res version. (etc. 18mp and 32 mp)
My dream FF camera might be
(1)weather proff and severe weather condition (-20-+50 deg C)
(2) shutter time lag can be 0.25s or less
(3) Magnesium or Ti Light body
(4) sensor around 36M pixel with micro lens correction at the edges of the image coverage
(5) AF sensor (like Nikon but the pattern should be more even distributed)
(6)Modular basis (that handgrip with SSD Memory slot to improve the Buffer for continuing High speed 20FPS or more in several second)
(7) Wireless flash w/o using flash triggering
(8) EVF with Eye-control AF.
(9) Finger Print Security and Watermark
(10)Ball control Dial (2-D movement)
Be realistic! That is more constructive than just listing your dream camera specs.
I, myself, really like the idea of a FF NEX.
1. Removable AA filter, or CTO option for such thing. It might come at a certain cost (but be reasonable).
2. MP count can be high. But it seems the majority want better low light performance. Reasonably, 16-24MP is a good range.
3. NEX-9 will be for advanced user or pro, so ISO 50 or even lower is needed.
4. It should come with an improved EVF.
5. ISO should be usable from 6400 to 25600, depending on the MP count.
6. Auto ISO range is customizable.
7. Tri-Navi with a dedicated Mode Change knob. I know the body would be bigger. But I really have faith in Sony’s camera designer. They really surprise us with the NEX-7.
8. Sensor-wise, due to the short registration distance, it should have good micro-lens.
9. Definitely, we need more lens, but it will be for the next poll.
10. AF can be improved. Touch shutter would be nice. I think EP-3 is as fast as most of us would need.
11. Custom bracketing is not hard to add.
12. A grip for the NEX would be welcome.
13. Improved DR is always welcome.
14. I definitely like idea suggested around here regarding RAW software support from Adobe or C1. It would be a plus.
15. For pro, definitely we need a solid pro support service.
16. I would not care less about the Video function. NEX-7 is good for that. Though if Sony feel that it would be good for sale, I would not mind.
17. Last point, please always have an option of turning off the NR.
Please, please, please, release an OVF model. I cannot stand these EVFs! And please support compact flash, I have about a grand in CF cards, and pretty much nothing in SD.
1) As compact as possible 🙂
2) Different basic mode:
such as:
a)low-iso-high-dynamic-range mode for supreme scenery (maybe push low iso to real 50);
b)super-high-iso mode for low light even with compromise of dynamic range.
3)SteadyShot supported by body will be necessary. And it’s better to have a separate module like Pentax OGPS to offer accurate camera point direction and even astroguider!
No SLT for me. The mirror is just another thing to worry about and . Be brave and be the first to release a FF mirrorless, AKA FF NEX. Just take a NEX-7, grow it to fit a FF sensor -better stabilized, but not a must- and release some small primes -for a serious camera like this, primes first, zooms later-, 24, 35, 50 and 85 f/2 or even f/2.8 is all is needed for a great start. Be the first and you can finally beat Canon and Nikon. They are the emperors in a well established old format, but they are nothing more than you if it comes to a completely new system where they can no longer rely on a big user base and legacy lenses. If they have to start a new system from scratch, and they must sooner or later, they don’t have any real advantage. Be the first with a serious FF NEX system and they will become niche (PJ/sports) but not for many time.
FF NEX
48MP for us landscapers, switchable down – even for RAW
Enhanced focus peaking to show ALL areas in focus (DOF)
More Zeiss primes
Develop way to eliminate diffraction
20 EV dynamic range
Hear me Sony!
Fast all electronic shutter combined with translucent mirror and big EVF = total winner combination. It’s unbeliveble to see some people complain about translucent mirror because it gives you so much advantages with very little disadvantages. I will never ever buy a camera with flip-flap moving mirror, let that relic rest in peace.
Sony is heading to the direction where boundaries between video and still shooting are merging. When they can go up to 18 FPS with big buffer you practically have video there. I want to see an electronic shutter that will allow you to shoot at least 18 FPS as long as you want with a customizable saving time. So you could for example shoot 1 minute of pictures 18FPS and when you stop shooting, the last 2-10seconds of pictures will be saved to your memory card. You would never miss a moment you want to capture!
Sony, go boldly to that direction where you have already gone with a55 and a77. History will remember you as a winner. If Canonikon don’t follow they will suffer the Nokia-effect.
Time to move to digital age. Use open firmware, why not an android base ? So you can build new app, new filter, make the camera exactly what you want, something like CHDK for canon camera.
Allow full control from PC, including theme and menu, so i can make my own menu and arrange controls the way i want.
Of course a capacitive touch screen, like my smartphone, put knobs, wheels and button on body if you want, but allow changing aperture or whatever setting by a touch and wipe gesture.
Made a wifi controled camera so i can use a big pad or notebook screen to frame picture and adjust setting, send photo directly to pad/notebook and then to a photo sharing service.
Put Full HD vidéo, with manual control over aperture, shutter speed and fps
electronic shutter, build in nd filter (something like electrochrome glasses)
all the bell and whistle like HDR, panorama, smile, blink, pet detector, wedding mode and son on 😉
and the last but not the least, built in coffee machine 😉
Definitely not SONY but hopefully someone will follow this excellent road!
LENSES
“affordable” pro/semipro tele primes
300 f4 G SSM
400 f5.6 G SSM
600 f5.6 G SSM
White finish, no more silver finish please!
Why is there so little emphasis on the development of a serious and “affordable” productline of lenses?
Forget the 500 f4. How many of those people screaming for it will actually be able to afford it?
Hopefully Sony can listen to the consumer…
1. All the lenses should be improved and equipped with SSM. Except for cheaper lens, use the screw motor.
2. Weather Sealed
3. A good sensor than can reach up to high ISO with clean images.
4. Battery grip
5. Give support to A-Mount.
6. Work on the buffer
7. More controls for video mode
also developer one with a real mirror. Just in case people miss them. Cause I kind of miss the mirror sound.
Yes please, a fullframe NEX camera (a digital Zeiss Ikon), with lots of sharpness and Carl Zeiss lenses.
I have just one basic idea. The cameras in the line should have an interchangeable pentaprism like the old top-of-the-line Canon, Nikon, and Minolta (eg., Minolta XK {Google it youngsters}) film cameras. These pentaprisms would contain many of the features that are being requested here. For example you could choose from an optical viewfinder and an electronic view finder. You could choose your MP: 16, 18, 24, 32, etc. Over time more pentaprisms could be added and upgraded without the need to change the body as often which would keep the price down.
This would put a new modular twist on an old idea.
LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS LESS PIXELS
You want to buy a 0.9MP barbie camera?
my wish… and all nex users is
-firmware update for closing the pre-flash…
and hotshoe adaptor……
other than that for fulframe…
just improved the slt system ther’s future in that tech…
Do you guys realise that if Sony considers all of these wishes, the result would probably be a $10.000 FF camera?
How about a budget FF cam: A77 with FF sensor?
I totally agree. I wish the Admin would have asked everyone to only suggest things people are willing to pay for.
I remember the last (big) lens poll; some of the lenses suggested would cost thousands of $/£/€. I’m not sure how many people would be willing to actually pay that much.
FORGET ABOUT SLT! NEX IS THE FUTURE, and so is a FF Nex.
reinz
New! 2 seconds ago | Reply
no way, for serious photography u still nee a camera like DLSR or minimal SLT :p nex camera is good n fun but that camera not capable for any situation photoshot
serious are on hassel/phaseone/mamiya wagon.
FORGET ABOUT THE NEX – FILM IS THE FUTURE!!!!
FORGET ABOUT FILM – DAGUERROTYPES ARE THE FUTURE!!!
(but I remain nostalgic for cave paintings – Lascaux colors FTW)
LOL -SNORT!
I’ll be seeing “secret” 800 year-old Anasazi petroglyphs next month — and photographing them digitally! Oh, the irony!
Does ochre come in Minolta colours?
I really wish one simple thing that for example all the Panasonic Cameras do have.
Please offer the possibility of shooting not only in 3:2 or 16:9 but also in 4:3 and 1:1 (or even more formats).
Look at all the middle format cameras being still used for photo-projects, art-photography and so on. It’s not only because of using films, it’s also the format, because photos with another format speak another language. It’s easy to offer this in SLT-cameras and means no further costs!!! Why does Sony not offer this option until now???
I don’t care loosing some pixels – and these pixels are the problematic ones anyway (vignetting, sharpness)!
And make the sensor cleaning better!
That’d be just an option more in the menu you don’t need.
Why not just crop it afterwards?
A square sensor, so you could switch from portrait to landscape without turning the camera..now that would be different.
But not really that important, too.
1. easy manual exposure control, like with NEX-7!
2. easy manual focus, with peaking focus assist, and, very important, ability to use manual lenses for auto exposure and focus confirmation (I understand this requires some compromise in accuracy) without “chipping”.
3. built-in flash meter, like with Leica R8.
4. DEFINITELY the ability to remove or retract the mirror.
5. interchangeable focus screens.
6. For heaven’s sake, LET US USE OTHER BRAND FLASHES!!! 🙂
7. Video output for EVF-like use of external monitor.
Thank you!
All of this NEX FF talk is absurd, IMO. The only reason that 35mm sensors are still en vogue is because of legacy lenses. NEX is a brand new system that has all of its lenses designed for aps-c, and assuming NEX will use a 35mm is no different than assuming m4/3 will use an aps-c sensor, or the Pentax 645D will use an 8×10 sensor. 🙂
In essence, the current NEX cameras ARE “fullframe.”
🙂
Speaking for myself, when I say a FF NEX, I mean using A-mount lenses in a mirrorless configuration. NEX lenses with the short current flange distance can’t make a big enough image circle for Full Frame sensors. In-body-stabilization would seem to be difficult if the current NEX specs were to be used, as well.
What is the point of mirrorless a mount? why is it diffeernt or better then SLT?
your comment does not make sens.
And its very possible to make FF Nex, like Leica M9 only cheaper then 7,000
Did u look at the test linked to this site of the A55 shot with and without the translucent mirror? Go see for yourself the difference in quality sans mirror. Obviously contrast detection has jumped hugely in speed from where it started, so that mirrored phase detection will not be the advantage it once was. Not having a mirror is one less mechanism that can go wrong, simpler is better in my book. Being mirrorless can mean the potential for lower price to the consumer. Gosh, I could keep going on with the advantages of mirrorless.
what we need for DSLT n NEX is :
1. internal SSS stabilizer for nex camera body
2. improve high dinamic range quality
3. noise handling clean image for high ISO
4. good image quality JPEG and RAW and improve IQ camera
5. internal flash with plate iron hot shoe
6. keep the 3 way tild LCD n make it for nex camera
7. mirror lock up
8. sync speed flash up to 1/1000
9. improve super steady shot stabilizer up to 5 stop
10. more a lot range lens for FF, DT and nex lens
11. high speed memory buffer
12. lower price camera and make a class diffrention camera
🙂 In essence, the current NEX cameras ARE “fullframe.”
The talk is about cameras that have nothing between the lens and the sensor, I believe. If the outcome is a better NEX with the E-mount or an other similar system using the A-mount seems to be of a lesser importance to me. The fact is that with a good EVF the need for SLT or SLR is very disputable.
How can a good EVF make the need for SLT disputable? SLT uses an EVF. The difference between SLT and SLM (mirrorles; a.k.a., EVIL, MILC, etc.) is that the SLT has a semi-transparent mirror to allow for phase-detection autofocus, whereas SLM relies solely on contrast-detection, which does not require a mirror. SLM can allow for a shorter flange distance and, thus, smaller lenses (in theory.) So, the only thing that can make the need for SLT disputable is improvements in contrast-detection autofocus (gap is already narrowed quite a bit) or a hybrid AF system like Fuji’s F300EXR.
If you think sensor size makes no difference in image quality, then get a 1/2/3″ compact. Really, there is a reason that the Pentax 645 is top dog in the DxO camera ratings- it’s because it’s a big-assed sensor. It’s sensor doesn’t have some magic unavailable to other manufactures, what it has is real estate.
-5 stops (or greater) more dynamic range than the leading pro cams.
-Better… no, excellent low light AF performance.
-modular.
-tilt/swivel screen.
-Wifi or some kind of wireless connect-ability
-integrated awesome filter.
Oh. Yes. Definitely better dynamic range.
I don’t want a 30+ megapixel sensor that’ll make all of my high ISO photographs noisy. Also, keep the current 100% pentaprism OVF. That thing is GORGEOUS! I’m not anti-EVF, I just simply love the current OVF the A900 has. Keep it simple Sony!
For a FF ALPHA SLT:
1) Ultrahigh EVF quality, with:
a)focus peaking
b)customizable information on screen (not only by pushing DISP button, but REAL customization)
2) FPS is high enough now, larger buffer is way more important
3) total recall modes (at least 3 memory settings, in stead of 1 on A77)
4) adjustable AUTO ISO
5) Needless to say: alloy body fully wheatersealed, good high ISO results, improved NR algorithms
6) most buttons and wheels customizable; LCD tilt system a la A77
7) as mentioned before: DOF information option as Dynax 7.
8 ) Crazy, but would be wonderful: built in flash with bounce option
9) let it be a professional camera, so not too much comsumer BS on it.
regardless of these points: LENSES!! SSM in all mid to high-end lenses, make for every prime a cheap and high-end version (metal/high grade plastics/wheaterseals/dustseals). Come up with a wonderful new megazoom like the NIKON 18-200mm but better, certainly better than 18-250 (if possible), upgrade all Minolta era lenses (like 100mm f2.8 macro, etc)
App store, BW sensor and removable sensor are not good ideas. Will add to much crap to camera/cost too much
Hybrid viewfinder makes more sense on NEX
I would like to have an Optical View Finder Please. Is it too much for a photographer to ask for?
+1 – Sony should keep one full frame model with OVF
Definitely! I think not only it is the essence of photography, but OVF lets the photographer really communicate with the lens. I has been a tradition for photographer to compose with OVF, so Sony should have a special OVF model left for us~!!!
+1
The “pixel binning” idea sounds amazing
For the extended ISO settings, reducing the megapixels and binning pixels sounds amazing. With a 24mp sensor I would happily have a useable image at 25% of full size at extreme ISO.
Would be a really nice feature that only takes some tech wizardry.. something Sony is amazing at doing!!
Sony’s future FF camera:
1. Divide FF models into different streams, studio/quality-demanding and speed-priority (; and maybe entry FF models);
2. Quality-priority: 3-40mp; quality rendering engine for jpg and raw, esp in Lo-mid ISO; 1:1/16:9/4:3/3:2 size ratio option; 24+ AF sensor with 15+ cross-type; wifi transmission of data, live view video stream and camera controls as well; flash master control; priced US$2300-2700
3: Speed-priority: 28-30mp; burst rate of 13-15 fps; buffer allowing 24+ frames; able to start new shooting while writing buffer to data cards after each burst; superb/improved AF performance; full 24+ cross-type AF sensors; better high ISO image quality; priced 2200-2400
4: Entry FF: 20-24mp; burst rate of 12-14; 19 AF sensors with 11+ cross-type; priced below US$2000
other features: water-proof casing (and lens); more video filters; better audio recording; movable LCD; GPS; better sales and marketing support for the new cameras
My wishcamera is A850 with new sensor with such an amazing picture as NEX 5n has + improved AF + LV + competitive price. Me and my girlfriend(both shooting A850) would be perfectly happy 🙂
Target your audience properly!!!
For Professional Photographers
Take everything you have on the A900 add a SLT and change:
1) High ISO with little noise (low light shooting)
2) High Megapixel Sensor (More the better, taking into consideration point 1)
a) You people who thinks this is not good, go back to your 2.1 MP clickers.
3) Extremely fast Focus (thank you phase detection… but make it faster)
4) High Exposure Range (+-9, please, will rock for RAW files)
5) Wifi built into camera with remote shooting software
a) Android+IOS shooting through Wifi control PLEASE!!!! we are in 2011 FFS!
b) Sony really!!! WTF! I am going to stick my foot up your arse!
c) You have the tech, fking do EET!
6) Extended Battery Life!!!!!!
7) Massive Buffer + 2 SD card slots
a) memory is so cheap these days….
8) 10+ Frames per second
9) 100 Cross type focus points
a) yeah, pulled out that number from my arse….
Faster flash sync speed is ALWAYS good too. 1/250 on the a900 is great but even 1/500 would be amazing for anything where you want to light a subject against a bright background in the day time.
1/1000 would be absolutely incredible, if it’s possible!
…interesting wish list for Sony future productions, but:
NEX-7 size camera body with “full frame” 35mm size sensor/imager, 14 bits, 24.5 mp, …nothing else needed! …the NEX-7 already looks like an M9 killer especially with the Zeiss optics
Also, can we PLEASE have a new 50mm for full frame?
The 50 1.4 is *ok* but it’s a cheap plasticy lens. The Sigma 50 1.4 is far better, and that’s a shame
A Zeiss 50 1.4 or 1.2 would be incredible and it would sell like crazy since that’s a fantastic focal length on FF
Same for a 35 f2 – it can be reasonable sized and priced. And a revamped 35 1.4 would be good too.. let’s be honest, the current one is very “meh”. Certainly not worth the huge price tag. The price should be halved on the 35G and replace with a 35ZA
SonyMinoltaClub in Russia asked the same question to its members. The majority of them wish A850/900 to be continued. Many of them want new sensor with improved ISO-perfomance and AF-system similar to that of A77. Many Alpha-shooters would like new FF to be something like A77 with FF-sensor. Almost everybody says, that 32 Mp-resolution is really enough if not redundant.
Sorry for my pour English(it’s not my native language but foreign one) 🙂
THIS IS IT!!!!
Sony as well as consumers can benefit from producing the complete camera.
Sony a99/PRO
Worlds first SLT-R with a dual mode.
A translucent mirror than can flip up.
When switched to PRO mode, the once fixed translucent mirror can now flip up for single shot auto focus exposing the sensor for maximum image quality.
When in regular mode it will retain the full time auto focus and 12fps and while in standard mode taking full advantage for video recording.
And complete with built in vertical grip
The a900 series is a professional camera and should continue to compete on a professional level.
# no need for higher resolution, 24mp is enough, work on high ISO and Dynamic Range
# make it flip-up slt (let the user choose if he/she wants PDAF or CDAF)
# don’t include too many post-production options which pollute the menu (no toy-camera look and similar stuff), better include this in a pc software suite if needed
# up the RAW dynamic range
# better control over video functions (and don’t repeat the A77 NTSC/PAL rubbish!)
(# don’t know if I want RAW video output or not, for this would triple the price, I expect…)
# A-mount with EVF (or..don’t know..can you combine it somehow with an OVF so one could see something even with the camera switched off if needed? Go, Sony engineers, go!)
# Tethering with some kind of Software Dev Kit (wow, that would be cool!)
# MF assistant
# Keep the good stuff you’ve been lauded for!! (don’t need to tell you, but anyway…)
# and here’s my dream: make it affordable! Let the professionals rant! Let the Nikon-lens-equipped groan! Let the Canon people lose their faith!
A camera body which is large enough for mans hands which has an OVF and the cameras sensor has the same or better DR than film!
If its an SLT camera with an EVIL, please eliminate ghosting and make sure there is no lag from the viewfinder
1. FF Nex, don’t want traditional bricks 😛
2. Alpha hot shoe, support WL lights
3. nex accessory terminal that support current / future optional EVF
4. Tri navi with 1 front wheel, one back top thumb wheel and the usual nex click wheel, as I don’t have two thumbs in one hand 😛
5. tilt touch screen, love the touch functions provided by 5N, makes some setting simple and fast 🙂
6. deeper burst buffer… A55 can do over 30 jpeg, but this year models only can do 10+?
7. Smart phone / tablet remote apps support, with real time live view and full function remote control connected by wifi
8. Extreme ISO and dynamic range performance, balance between MP and detail preservation under high ISO, reality sensor?
9. will in sensor phase detect mature enough for actual product? Needs that focus speed like the SLTs for a pro body.
Bare bones full manual simple camera with no frills.
I’d like it even more if it had a manual wind knob. Make it quiet… very quiet please. Not too small. Front mounted shutter release (like old Topcon) for more comfortable portrait shooting without the heavy side grip.
Otherwise just do your thing Sony. Your new cameras are great and moving into the right direction.
First off I just want to mention I use the a900 every day in my professional photo studio. I just bought two new a900 just in case Sony discontinues it and I don’t like its replacement. Needless to say I’m very excited and nerves to see what Sony does.
In order of importance.
1.Higher ISO performance. 50 to 16,000 must be as good if not better then the 5d at 1200ISO
2. Keep the big bright beautiful optical view finder! (if it is not as bright or is a consumer grade OLED I as well as other professionals will have no choice but to look elsewhere).
3. 24 or higher MP with an anti dust coated sensor.
4. duel card slots that record at the same time. CF must stay
5. 7 frames per second or better.
6. replace the plastic hot shoe with something more durable.
7. keep the body as sturdy and weather proof as the a900 or don’t
even bother.
8. live view and the tilting screen thing from the a77, though must be durable or I don’t want it.
9. keep the preview button.
Sony you hit a home run with the a900 it only needs a little tweaking. I don’t understand why you feel like you need to reinvent the wheel. Pro’s like optical view finders and shutters. Best AZ
Please keep pixel count reasonable. It means more to me that ISO and Noise and latitude are considered a priority. Also clean video, intelligently down-resed without aliasing is a must at this point for anyone working in multimedia, it cannot be seen as secondary when large pixels counts are the enemy of both photographers and videographers.
Same as others.
FF sensor with GIANT photsites. 16-18 million pixels.
Adjustable zebra stripes.
Lock UP pelicle mirror. (Win/win situation for all)
10 bit 4:2:2 HDMI output. (Clean with no gimmicks)
Adjustable burst speed. 1-12 frames per second.
XDCAM 422 codec
That camera would be a low light beast
A low light FF NEX-7.
If Sony are releasing new full frame models early next year I expect the design of the hardware is already locked down (probably months ago) – but here goes…
More lenses – and a clear roadmap of future lens releases. A couple of tilt-shift lenses for studio, architecture and landscape work would make it a more rounded “pro” system. Ultimately every successful professional camera system is built on it’s lenses.
Also encourage Zeiss/Cosina to offer the manual focus Zeiss prime lenses they have available for Nikon and Canon mounts in A mount as well. One reason people are tempted to buy Sony Alpha Cameras is for the Zeiss lenses – but then they realise there are all these other Zeiss lenses they won’t be able to use.
Keep an OVF on one of the full frame models – even if that model has no video. The A900 has a gorgeous OVF, don’t loose it. Both EVF and OVF have their advantages.
Weather sealing on bodies and lenses.
Don’t make the camera any larger than the A900 – a little smaller / lighter would be nice. (That’s no to a built in vertical grip.)
If there is room, a vertical tripod mount – avoid the need for an L-Bracket.
Light AA filter – giving it up entirely, as some suggest, is probably not a good idea.
Keep the A900 colour and tone rendition.
As someone has already suggested, better more reliable contacts for hot-shoe (and lenses)
Customizable controls. Let users have the option to reprogram all the buttons
More coverage and spread of AF points – faster AF
Built-in wireless trigger for remote studio flash
14 bit (or 16 bit) RAW
Better JPEG engine
Large buffer – don’t have any complaints about buffer filling up too fast.
Ability to code in details of manual focus lenses
Availability of pro-service (Sony you must already have a pro service network for your pro cine cameras)
AMOLED scratch proof rear display
GPS, HDR
Leveling – like Pentax K5
Make this camera the best FF studio & landscape camera on the market.
A full frame – NEX-like camera as well would be fantastic. But can Sony produce a full range of lenses for such a camera as well as more lenses for their current systems (A-mount aps-c and full frame, E-mount)?
Keep prices very competitive as you did with A850 and A900
– a NEX size full frame camera would be awesome!
– how about a removable IR-blocking filter or better yet, a switch to easily change between the IR-blocking ‘hot mirror’ filter and an infrared pass filter?
– a built in intervalometer for time-lapses with intervals as low as 5 seconds available [or even 2-3 seconds as choices]
– the ability to turn off the lcd screen while the intervalometer is running [or while filming a movie, or even at any point so you can keep the camera on, ready, discreet, and using less power for quick ‘shots from the hip’]
– very quick ‘instant on’ start up times like DSLR’s would be great
– customizable scripts would be nice [like CHDK allows in Canon points and shoots]
– though it wouldn’t work with the image circles of most normal 35mm lenses, a sensor wider than 36mm x 24mm would be nice – I vote for a 48mm x 24mm or even 72mm x 24mm sensor [or another option would be a 36mm x 36mm sensor]
– a very wide prime lens for this system would be great [as wide or wider than then Sigma 12-24mm on full frame] [or make an ultra wide 7mm or 8mm rectilinear prime lens for the current NEX system]
– i know i’m getting a little off-topic, though a retro-looking/functioning medium format digital camera designed like an old twin-lens reflex would be awesome [make this with a full frame 6×6 sensor and as small as a TLR camera like the old Yashica 124]
– perhaps a little more reasonable for the full frame suggestions: a camera like an old Nikon FM or FA with a simple, compact, mechanical, solid feel [even include the mirror lock up switch! – this could be programmed to go into live view mode] [realistically, let’s look at the design of the leica s2 system for inspiration]
I really like the cool hair style of a900 and a850. The pentaprism hair style. It is so handsome.
Peaking mode!
I’m not sure if a FF Nex would technically be possible, given the reduced image circle that’s probably being used on the E-mount lenses.
But I guess it would be cool to have the smallest and lightest FF camera on the market. Something that is about as small or maybe a bit bigger than an A65 and could be used as a second body. The technology is already there, SLT-cameras appear to be
I liked the idea of having multiple categories, like gamagama mentioned. I think the smallest FF-camera could maybe be combined with a lower resolution sensor that gives an awesome S/N-ratio.. Something like a small powerhouse for low-light/event/concert photographers. Or prosumers searching for a body to use the full potential of their FF-lenses, that is light and portable at the same time.
You could combine that lo-res small camera with an awesome capturing speed, given that a lower resolution would probably take less time to process and write. But for sports/action photogs to be really interested, you’d have to combine it with a really rugged shell, which would probably automatically increase price and weight.
I always asked myself why no manufacturer ever considered making a carbon body.. Maybe because it’s too expensive? If it were possible, I wonder how much difference that would make regarding the weight of the camera.
Camera:
Top quality EVF (1280*1024 or better, maybe 15 or 20 fps).
Highspeed video
Tethering
Lots of Cross-AF-points all over the picture combined with face detection and subject tracking.
Choosing two faces, and then during filming make a nice change of focus from one to the other at the press of a button.
Balanced microphone input (maybe even XLR with support for phantom power).
Better manual control of video combined with autofocus.
Zebra-lines (not sure if a77 has that)
definitely a Hybrid ViewFinder +1
If Sony want to make FF for pro, then there should both slr and slt versions.
I don’t think Nigel Barker need the speed of slt, but the degradation of image quality by slt(even only slightly, pro care about it even slightly). Pros in studio like slr with super colour, detail and resolutions.
Sport, photojournalism, event and etc pros need the speed from slt. So make it super high fps, focus speed, af tracking, ISO but super clean, huge buffer and multiple card slots(so that they don’t need to change card when the game or event is running). Sport and event pros sure will happy with the FF slt and 500f4 combo.
As more pros happy with Alpha, more consumers and amateurs will buy Sony.
If Sony want to make a Alpha that matches all pros, then the Alpha should has the transparent mirror(slt) that can be customized to stay like SLT or flip like SLR.
Low budget and a55 size FF will be super hot and get a lot of market share.
My favorite would need to have
* A77 features
* Budget price ($1500-1800)
* excellent AF, at the minimum the A77 11 cross points (but scaled to FF format, not the A900 ‘solution’ where the cross points cover only a small center are). I’d love to see cross sensors at the intersections of the rules of thirds grid.
Nice to have:
* option: use back wheel for ISO control in A+S modes instead of exposure compensation
* pellicle mirror flip up (or down, out of the way).
+1 to the back wheel ISO.
Just like the Tri-Navi
10+ lenses from Easy choice to G and Zeiss, from ultra wide to super tele, announce together with FF bodies sure bring a super huge tsunami to camera world.
@Mist > “bring a super huge tsunami to camera world”
That’s in rather poor taste considering the recent real tsunami that affected many Japanese camera companies and their employees.
Aside from all of the usual updates one would expect from a new camera generation, give me the option of moving the ST mirror out of the way. 25-30% light loss is a big deal.
I would love the app store, thus turning the camera into a platform as much as a standalone tool, but I don’t think that Sony is willing to upset the status quo that much. That would cause a paradigm shift in the camera market and, frankly, I don’t think Sony has the balls.
Similar size/weight to an Olympus OM2 / Pentax MX
Weather sealed
Multi-spot metering as OM4
Intervalometer as Ricoh XRP
More functional remote release than the 850/950 release
Longer shutter speeds
Lower ISO / Virtual multi ND Filter
Open programmable interface (USB/Bluetooth/IR/Wireless IP)
Full Frame “NEX-7f”
it will sell better then any ff-slt, exactly like the nex-7 will outsell a77,
imho, its the only chance for sony to steal some customers from Canon/Nikon
* not more than 24 megapixel
* completely new af-System – without translucent mirror
* superb high iso quality
* price 1.800,- euro
I doubt a NEX mount compatible FF sensor is possible,
so a FF compact with M mount would be already awesome.
Also I’d like a fast 16mm or wider of high quality for the NEX mount.
Also better HDR bracketing, for example 3 shots at +- 1 or 2 EV.
Dear SAR,
For a pro relacement of the A900 I would like to see:
(1)I prefer OVF to EVF but f Sony can produce either a hybrid OVF/EVF or a higher performing EVF with greater dynamic range (I am anxious to see the A77’s EVF). For the hybrid case I think it would be possible to overlay the optical view with an electronic view (image and data)to gain the best of both worlds. I also am inclined to think that Sony could provide a microalighment of the optical/electronic views so they overlap perfectly using an method similar to the current AF Micro Adjustment by allowing an X and Y axis adjust of the EVF dsplay chip if necessary.
(2) I really don’t care about video for the FF replacement so for me I would welcome a lower priced model without video capability.
(3) Increase the continous shooting speed to 7 or 8 fps with a larger memory buffer.
(4) For the future develop an improved sensor for greater color and luminance resolution (ala the likes of the Foveon sensor) by improving on the Bayer pattern lmitatons.
(5) Expand the memory card slots to include 2 CF cards which can be accessed simultaneously. I prefer CF cards because of their performance vs. SD or MS and because I have a large investment in several cards.
In terms of a personal rating of features from 1 to 5 here’s how I view the order of their importance:
OVF 5
EVF 3.5
Video Capture 2
Live View 2.5
Continous Capture Speed 5
Image Buffer Size 5
Hgh ISO Performance 3.5
Ruggedness 5
Sensor Resolution 4
Rear LCD Hinge 3
And of course, keep all the goodies of the A900 intact wth the addition of key technological improvements of the A77.
Domenck Creaco
My ideas:
A FullFrame, E Mount (short Registration Distance with ability to mount Leica and Voigtlander M & LTM lenses) NEX. Like the NEX 7 but with a FullFrame Camera. The Alpha mount is too restrictive.
Speaking of NEX, I would like a fully articulated screen for the NEX 7 (or next NEX) like the A77. Up and down is good but not enough. A good example is the Nikon Coolpix 8400. It fully articulates, then when you are done with the camera, you can rotate the screen to face the camera and close it. It protects the face of the screen when not in use.
I would also like Sony to produce a Mirrorless Medium Format Camera. Something similar to the NEX line, but a camera that can mount all of the legacy Medium Format lenses with the appropriate adapter and have a large sensor. Sony can also partner with Zeiss or Cosina (Voigtlander) to make more lenses for it.
Sony wants to be #1 in CMOS development and sales, a Mirrorless Medium Format camera would be a halo product, even if sales were not extremely high volume. Medium Format has been traditionally cumbersome to work with. Sony can change that.
Sony is shaking up the market, I’m glad to see that. Canon and Nikon were making things too stagnant.
no, 35×38 mm!
the film is 35 mm wide not 24 😉
> no, 35×38 mm!
Also known as “Medium Format”? … OK, I’d go for that. Most SLR lenses would support it, though some could be visibly soft/vignetting in the corners.
> the film is 35 mm wide not 24
Are you distinguishing between “24×36” vs. “36×24”?
I’m joking 😉
* a-mount camera with 2 main sensors with pellicle mirror splitting light. one sensor has RB color mosaic, other is B&W. this way, one could change color rendition by changing filters in front of sensors, rather than buying other camera with RGGB color mosaic.
* appstore!
* for nex – adaptor for m4/3 lenses. that would allow nex users to troll m4/3, rather than the reverse (as it is now)
* optional shutterless operation (using rolling shutter)
– Focus bracketing and focus range visualisation.
– Extended remote interface for enhanced functionality (time-lapse, camera trap)
– Extended continious autofocus
– SW Focus limiter (Range)
– Lens CA, distortion, vignetting correction (learnable)
– store of customer preset sets
Having shot with the A900 and A77, I can honestly say my list would be:
1. OVF. Give us one model that keeps the GORGEOUS A900 OVF.
2. More and widely-spread AF points
3. A CF card slot and a MS/SD hybrid slot. Give us the software option to write JPEG to MS, RAW to CF.
4. GPS, WiFi.
6. A 36-40MP Sensor with an option for a 8.5-10MP pixel binning mode for high ISO when needed.
7. I do not care about video, but I guess you’ll need to have it.
8. CDAF for live view and video
9. Tethering of course.
10. Improved dynamic range, and a more optimized AA filter.
Please keep the gorgeous tonality.
How about one FF model with OVF.
I mean not all.
And I don’t mean it has to be the top end of the lien or the sports camera if Sony chooses to do one).
Just have a followup to the A900 for what it is, together with 1 or multiple SLT models.
It doesn’t need the high fps of a SLT, just give us an advanced AF module and Sensor to the A900 (or even better^^) OVF.
Keep all other features for a Live View mode, like the A580 does…
Sony still doesn’t answer if they have decided about OVF in FF.
I guess this is only a tactic to hold us down and not announce that they will go all SLT.
But hope dies last^^
Sony should include a feature that stops 99% of Sony users from complaining about ISO & anything they don’t like. I’ve used my A700 to make money, start a business, sell prints, and on and on. Sure the ISO isn’t great, but really, there are 100 more important things than ISO, and ways to work around some situations.
A better camera will not make you a better photographer! There are guys out there who could smoke 90% of the people commenting on this forum with a disposable camera!
Put the “shut up & go take high ISO pics of your cat or a wall” feature in the new FF Sony and I’ll but one, haha.
Peace.
And Peace to you!
Sony REALLY needs to compete in the High-ISO/Low-Noise arena. I make $ off my A100/A350/A700/A900 images, too. But it pisses me off when a wedding guest is taking better (speaking purely of less noise, that is) dark-room reception photos with their D3 than I am! I go to process my ISO 1600 images and they are obviously noisy…
This is not vanity. Sony NEEDS this to break into pro-level reputation. Sony NEEDS Pro-level reputation to sell more consumer cameras. This is why Minolta was left in Nicanon’s dust in the 70’s-80’s “We’ll just focus on consumer models: that’s where the $ is.”
Did I mention that sony REALLY NEEDS to compete in the High-ISO/Low-Noise arena. I want a FF 10-14 MP camera with a translucent flip-up option. Or, a 40-50 MP camera with RAW binning of 4 (2×2) pixels into one. This sensor should have a “white” pixel, of course. …ISO 32,000 baby!
And a HUGE memory buffer!!! (Flash is cheap!) Shockingly huge! 200 RAW Images huge. “We can’t believe a camera manufacturer leaped SO FAR AHEAD of the standard offerings in memory buffering!” – Future review And a fast dual-channel memory card (CF please (SD is OK-ish (NO MS!!! (Unless CF & MS are inside a CF slot option.)))) download, and put JPEGS and RAW in separate folders, and 6-digit file numbering (a menu option? In that case offer 7!)
OK, I’m on a roll…
Removable back/changeable sensor?
Wi-Fi download/tether
Eggs cooked over-easy every morning.
— APPS! —
OK, I’m done! – Bert :o)
FF in Nex footprint: basically an M9 with half the size and weight.
I don’t know if the emount could hold that sensor, but if possible that would be best.
Ability to use M-mount lenses a must.
EVF could use more MF aids to compete with fast RF focusing.
I would pay 2500USD for such a camera body tommorrow as would many others.
ask yourself: which will benifit sony more? Another A900 style large heavy FF to compete with Canonikon, or something never done before: a small, full featured, short register FF.
It also consitent with the history of camera development in Japan, which really began with the desire to create an affordable leica.
Well, forgot to mention, greater dynamic range. Like 15 stops on base-iso or something would really save every situation. No more painting in fake colours in the sky. No more hidious “fake” highlights in cars or skies. + beautiful skin-tones.
Actually, high iso becoming redicoulus.. We dont need a clean iso 25600! WE NEED MORE DYNAMIC RANGE and 16-bit sensors. Thats the last thing that digital has to fix before I can go 100% digital. Until then, I keep shooting Pentax 67 loaded with Porta 400 😉
That TOO! But 15 stops ‘taint going to happen on current technology. In-Camera HDR would be the only option there. I’m more a purist so I just take 3 exposures and blend in the clouds or shadow details as needed; doesn’t look “HDR”/fake.
Hit Submit too fast… That is to say, Increased Dynamic range and low noise go hand-in hand. 16-bit ‘taint worth the extra 4 bits if they are an extra 16 levels of noise! I want to shoot Clean ISO 6400 12-bit AND Ultra-Clean ISO 100 16-bit. — See my post a page up ^
evf that has a refresh rate fast enough to mimic a ovf. Should be able to shoot the most extreme sports with no lag. Next, ISO needs to be beyond amazing at high ISO. Also very fast sync speed on the level of a medium format camera. For God sakes please get with pocketwizard and develop a off camera triggering system for the alpha line like the one they have developed for nikon and canon. Far more AF points on the level of a Canon 1d or Nikon Dx series. Built in battery grip (the a900 successor should have this, the a850 successor should not). Create a service for professionals were we can get fast turn around time if the camera breaks and a loaner program while we wait for our gear to be repaired. Sure I could think of more but thats it for now.
1) OVF at least as good as my a900 finder. I will not buy an addition/ replacement to my a900 unless it offers an optical finder solution. EVF’s are not so great when shooting in bright light, beyond all the other issues they suffer from.
2) Articulated LCD screen with live view of course.
3) Don’t go crazy with the MP’s at the expense of overall image quality! That could mean, for instance, using the new NEX 5n 16MP sensor technology/ pixel pitch as the base for the FF sensor INSTEAD of the NEX 7’s higher pixel pitch sensor.
4) If there is a translucent mirror, the option to raise it out of the light path for critical shooting must exist. I will not buy a camera without that option.
I’m saying this for the third and final time:
I have not used any of the SLTs, I didn’t know they are not good performances in bright daylight, is it that you can’t see at all or that he image gets washed out?
FOV would not remain constant: it would change with each aspect ratio. Platescale (angle/mm) would remain constant switching between aspect ratios.
If the sensor was 38×31, I would want to use all the pixels! (As I mentioned above, I’d be OK with corner softness.)
Regardless, cost for bigger (+36%) sensors would probably not make this happen. But one can hope…
SLT with flip up mirror-24 Mp
SLR OVF-32 Mp with pixel-binning
Possibility to raise the translucent mirror is just plain stupid. It will make manufacturing work more difficult, add weight, room, cost and make your device less durable in the end. And for what? You would never notice the difference in IQ without a good reference picture and extreme pixel peeping. Absolutely no point. It’s almost as stupid as complaining why objectives have so many lens-elements inside, as each element will reduce the total light.
Sony don’t need opinion from so called “PRO”-segment to boost up sales. If manufacturers would have listened to the most conservative part of camera-people (PROS) in the past, we all would still be shooting with film. Most of the people just can’t see the big picture of the future technology.
No more OVF or moving mirror.
At least 1 budget FF SLT:
A77 body and features
18-24Mpx / High ISO up to 100K
Bigger buffer and either CF or 2 SD slots in order to quickly empty the buffer.
5fps in addition to 12/8/3
AF sensors area scaled to FF
Price < 1800$
I think there should be 2 FF camera in the line up, and one for pro-sumer. Below is the list I want for the lower FF:
– 16 MP sensor as used in NEX-5N. I don’t need crazy resolution, but we want low noise at high ISO, especially the translucent mirror takes away 30% of light.
– low noise at high ISO, at least comparable to Nikon D700
– 19 point all cross AF (same level as the Canon 7D)
– 8 FPS without restriction on using big aperture only
– high buffer, at least 30 frames RAW continuous shooting
– faster time to clear the buffer. I use NEX-3, it took like 40 s to clear the buffer
– weather seal
– be able to lock up the mirror for low light condition, I think this implies using live view only and not using phase detection focus
– built-in off camera flash trigger
– a aperture and shutter speed priority mode. User can set the aperture and shutter speed, camera adjust the ISO.
– CF card slot
– price less than $2500, ideally around $2000 street price
– allow HDR and other picture mode apply to RAW as well. in my NEX-3, the HDR can only set for JPEG only. I took RAW normally, and it is a inconvenient to switch the picture size when I want to take HDR picture
I hope Sony will listen to us. Especially the high pixel race, many many people don’t need it, please. that’s why people go for the Nikon D700.
*Super precise AF sensor for F/1.4 lenses
*AF sensors positionned as per the rule of thirds
*2.4GHz radio wireless flash
*Use Android phone as wireless remote & Liveview screen
*Better dust removal for sensor
*ISO display in the viewfinder
*Quiet & no vibration shutter/mirror
*Wider bracketing, such as 2EV 5-steps
*AF bracketing, for increased DOF in Macro
*DOF bracketing
Pro level NEX full frame!
See recent essay at The Luminous Landscape: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/five_technologies_we_want_but_wont_get.shtml
If any company could make it true, it’s Sony.
These options all use existing technologies.
To Sony: read that article!
– Full voice control
– Live view focus masking (done!)
– “Exposure to the Right” exposure mode
– Give it all to me on my Ipad
– Touch pad based zone system
Further:
– Grainy B&W mode like the EP-3
– Built in tiltable oled viewfinder, somewhat bigger
– Extremely high tonal range
– More empasis on IQ than on pixel numbers
– In-body image stabilisation
Good bright EVF with precise live histogram gives you best possible tools to maximize your IQ, because you always know how to make best possible exposure. And best possible exposure gives you highest S/N-ratio. With OVF you don’t have that ability.
That is the reason why camera with SLT+EVF will always give you better IQ compared to same camera with OVF and flipping mirror. That is something that people don’t seem to understand. I’ve shot pictures with OVF and EVF. After you have shot pictures with EVF with live histogram, you don’t want to go back. Believe me.
All this talk of wanting mirrors flipping is stupid.
The *tiny* increase in image quality will be more than offset by:
A new sensor – technological advances
The cost – needing the assembly to flip the mirror, making it durable etc will add to the cost, for little benefit
Overall design – it’s not even clear if the SLT camera mirrors *can* flip while a lens is attached. And we don’t want to lose the A-mount
And those saying that they need an OVF. That’s just based on previous generation EVFs. The a77 has already converted several reviewers. The a99 will be ANOTHER leap forward. Look at how much phones have improved in a short time. Display technology is always getting better. EVF gives you a ton of advantages like live histogram – it will save you time and get you better images right out of the camera.
1) consider leaving the aa filter out
2) weather sealling
3) introduse a gadgety but reliable off-camera flash system for studio lights
4) compact flash memory cards!!!!
5) TETHER!!!!!! DO NOT FORGET IT LIKE ON a77
if it is a dslt i would also like
6) zooming on-camera flash like mino 800si
7) peaking mode
8 ) mirror up mode
wifi would be good
pentaprism as in a900 would be even better
and please do NOT reduce the size/weight
Well. I think this has been covered before now on sonyalpharumors, I’d like a mirrorless body to start out with, and you can attach and detach different SLT/SLR adapters (so each adapter has a mirror, viewfinder and the like attached to it)
It would be expensive but the advantages of having the choice between SLR and SLT would be really hard to ignore imo 🙂
Well here is my two cents. Hope you all agree. 🙂 No particular order.
1. No nonsense full frame DSLR camera. No scene modes, no fancy special effects. Just A, P, S, M.
2. Fully weather sealed.
3. A sensor/algorithms that’s brilliant. We do not need 24MP – 50MP sensors. I’d rather outstanding IQ than high pixel count.
4. Outstanding ISO performance up to 25000.
5. Outstanding Dynamic Range.
6. The best noise reduction.
7. The finest precise autofocus. A real bug bear of mine is lenses that hunt for focus.
8. OVF – not EVF. Or at least offer the option of OVF. I wouldn’t mind actually if the camera didn’t have a view finder so long as the screen has full swivel and rotate. Just like A77 or better!
9. Buttons/dials not touch screen.
10. GPS.
11. Tethering for Aperture et all.
12. Control to set everything – e.g. noise reduction on/off etc..
13. No video. Buy a camcorder if you want to record movies! 🙂
14. 2 CF card slots.
15. Ability to upload custom colour profiles and use in camera (icc icm files).
16. traditional and professional!
How about an upgrade to the A700 (A705???) and A850 (A855??) and A900 (A905??) taking the latest tech from the most recent Sony releases? I prefer the A700 body – would like to see this evolve – good size and feel.
Thanks for listening!
FF NEX,
– 24-megapixels is enough, higher dynamic range & cleaner iso,
– automatic closing mount feature when dismounted lens is a must.
– a 24mm TS lens 😀
I would suggest things that I believe are realistic…
– A switch between SLR/SLT mode. Ideally I would like to have OVF when using the SLR mode, but I guess it requires new development. So I will be happy even with EVF (or hybrid) with the option of flipping the mirror during the shot.
– Binning option. Since the sensor is going to have extreme MP count, please allow real binning. Like this I will be able to choose between high resolution or extreme low light and high dynamic range. (On a second thought, it might be a problem with the RGB filters arrangement, but I am sure there is a way to do it right).
– I usually use big lenses and therefore I like the body to be big (A900 with VG like), but I know that many people doesn’t like it. So it will be smart to have a choice between two bodies – one big and one smaller (and maybe cheaper with fewer features).
I want a FF DSLR, successor to a900/a850, not a FF NEX.
Specific, and simple desires:
1) Weather/moisture/dust proofing
2) Higher burst frames per second
3) Superior high ISO performance – match or beat the best from Canon and Nikon
4) Superior dynamic range
5) +/- 3EV from the beginning
6) 5+ shot bracketing bursts possible
I’m going for a full frame professional Camera next year. Mirror lockout, Hybrid view finder, Noise reducer ISO, and audio input when taking pictures to help label them when doing a photo shoot.
Entry level ($1500)
Sony a9: FF sensor in a mirrorless nex type body BUT with an A mount, improved specs of nex7/a77
DSLR (no video modes, not as fast as DSLT)($2000-$2500)
Sony a95: more traditional DSLR with OVF geared toward events, journalism, lower MP with good ISO performance.
Sony a95s: more traditional DSLR with OVF geared toward studio and landscape, Monster MP
DSLT (with video mode, fast fps)($2500-$3500)
Sony a99: SLT FF geared toward events, journalism, lower MP and better iso, EVF
Sony a99s: SLT FF geared toward studio, landscape etc, Monster MP, EVF
Ultimate: (with video mode)($3500-$5000)
Sony a1G: OVF/EVF like the fuji x100, Pro body, Monster MP and Great ISO performance. Speed demon more than 15fps. Super fast AF, simply unstoppable!
Make it happen Sony and take your rightful place as KING lol!
Interchanges Dual Slot CF or CF + SD (or MS)
1) FF 24 MP SLT Super fast AF, High ISO, 1 / 12000 sec 12ff/sec
2) FF 36 MP SLT Low ISO sensitivity (25 ISO or less)
3) NEX FF 24 MP with SLT and A mount
Magnesium alloy body
Weather / moisture / dust proofing
The same features as A77, but with:
– FF (obviously)
– dual-card writing (= data redundancy)
– increased buffer size
– great low light performance > Nikon D3
– maybe even higher resolution and faster OLED EVF (I haven’t tested A77 yet, I will buy it, but my current A55 is certainly not good enough for indoor action sport photography)
– a price range between current A77 and A900
– faster flash sync rate
– tethering
– intervalometer / time-lapse photography
– OLED screen on the back
No need for:
– more megapixels (unless with binning)
– more filming bells and whistles ; enough already on the A77
– moving mirrors ; that’s so 90’s. SLT technology with fixed mirror = great
– built-in vertical grip ; an external vert grip is fine
100% OPTICAL VIEW FINDER !!!
Sony a95/0: more traditional DSLR with OVF geared toward events, journalism, lower MP with good ISO performance – Nikon D3s 16Mp whit af from A77
Sony a95/0s: more traditional DSLR with OVF geared toward studio and landscape, Monster MP, Af from A77
I would just be happy to see a full frame with an adjustable/rotating live view screen. and release it within the next year or less!
I know I’m dreaming but I want a nice large 100% OPTICAL VIEW FINDER !!!
My FF wishlist:
– a big optical viewfinder like the current Canon 1ds because: In reality I *DONT* see in the electronic viewfinder how the shot will look like in digital because what I see in the electronic view finder is the intersection of the limitations of 1)sensor 2) image processing pipeline 3) OLED display. I’m aware about the advantages of an electronic view finder but I think it’s a grave mistake to offer an EVF *ONLY* full frame DSLR lineup
– high ISO performance is *MORE* important than megapixels. I have absolutely no use for a 34MP sensor that has troubles at ISO 6400 with visible noise. Peronally I think only a small subset of user will have a use for such high resolution. For me the sensor has to show low noise *AT LEAST* as good as the Nikon D3s
– high dynamic range. I love landscape photography and one can never have enough dynamic range
– fast, versatile, reliable auto focus *AT LEAST* as good as the Nikon D3s
– a set of good high quality exchangeable focusing screens to take full advantage of manual focusing lenses which makes the DSLR a true versatile imaging device.
– excellent ergonomics – well thought out, customizable buttons/wheels to make using the camera intuitive and adaptable
– excellent weather sealing for shooting in raw nature
– built like a tank
– I can live easily without video capabilities
A big +1, except I think it’s too early to judge what the EVF will be like on the A77, much less what it would be like on an A99 next year.
Actually downsized 24mp pic to 12mp pic has comparable noise to a native 12mp picture. So large megapixels sensor is good for both noise peeper and those who want extra details who care less about noise.
i was thinking, 101% of us here will review out photo via the LCD anyway, the EVF is showing you the review of photo output before u even shoot them… what’s the different anyway?
I really want a FF NEX that uses the A mount
Let’s think of a traditional 35mm SLR as it worked on the 70’s:
1) FF sensor on DSLR or pellix body,
2) NO NEED for ultra fast autofocus or ultra rapid burst mode,
3) auto exposure A, S, M manual exposure,
4) bulb & mirror lock up,
5) easy access to exposure compensation and spot metering, iso setting and WB setting,
6) video recording, ok, why not ?
7) GPS …. whaaat ??? I want to take pictures, I’m not driving my car !!
8) Sony, put the best FF image sensor technology into a SOLID MINIMAL BODY, few buttons and sockets, just what is really needed to take photos.
8) NOTHING ELSE !!! Let’s think of what astonishing pictures the great HCB took with a manual Leica + 50mm lens.
9) I’m still taking FF pictures with my three Minolta 800si bodies and some good Provia or Tri-X. I haven’t any DSLR. I’d be very happy to use something similar to my film cameras, even less feautured than my 800si.
Let me propose a list of very practical suggestions which would make me happy. I’m a professional travel and studio photographer (and I even write books for the Sony cameras).
* First of all, go into the Konica Minolta vaults and have a look at the Maxxum / Dynax 7 or 7D. These cameras had the best user interface of any modern camera – real knobs and buttons so people can change settings quickly in high-pressure situations (like wedding photographers or photojournalists). I especially liked the top two knobs and ring arrangements – I could switch drive mode or the flash exposure compensation instantly (without having to press several buttons). See my review of the Maxxum 7 for more information: http://photo.net/minolta/maxxum7
* Your SLT technology allows the return of real-time flash metering (like in the film days). The old system had no pre-flash delay, and was more accurate in a greater variety of situations. Just place the flash sensor next to the phase-detect array.
* You MUST HAVE A built-in POP-UP FLASH to act as a wireless flash trigger. I don’t care what the marketing department tells you – the current solution you offer of using an F20AM flash atop an A900 is awful because the AAA batteries have to be replaced at least once a session. And putting a F58AM flash on top is not only more expensive but needlessly heavy as well. Make the built-in flash Infrared-only if you want (which will help quiet the critics).
* And speaking of wireless flash, the new wireless flash protocol is wonderful and capable, but I never use it because the user interface on the back of the flash is abysmal. (I have to endure six button presses just to adjust the flash ratio!) Contact me if you want me to show you how to design it correctly so working studio professionals can work FASTER and actually make use of your system.
* David Kilpatrick proposed swapping the phase-detect array and the sensor in the new camera design – this way the image is captured via front-surface reflection and will suffer NO theoretical ghosting or image deterioration whatsoever. (see http://www.photoclubalpha.com/2011/08/26/smoke-and-mirrors-why-sony-has-got-it-wrong ) This is a very practical idea and is much less “revolutionary” than the fixed mirror.
* You must include the option to use the EVF / LCD displays while plugged into an HDMI display. (I’ve needed this for technical functions in the past.)
* Face detection during video – I’ve discovered that wide-area AF makes miserable decisions in video mode, whereas thanks to face detection it does a wonderful job with stills. That might require a lot more processing power than is practical, but it would be a help.
* And speaking of video, all future cameras should provide an option for manual control of audio input for video! Lack of this feature has made video professionals write off the A77 without even having tried it.
* If the new camera has two memory card slots, would like the ability to store RAW on one card and JPG on the other. Or switch to the other one automatically when the first card fills up. Your competitors have been doing this for years.
* Nikon has an option to allow Auto ISO in manual mode – which sounds counter-intuitive but some photographers actually use it to good effect.
* I agree with others who have asked for an extra-large memory buffer – it’s cheap and will result in happier customers and more positive reviews for handling.
* I personally don’t care much if it’s EVF or OVF – each has their advantages. And believe it or not, more megapixels doesn’t impress me. I’d rather keep it at 24 MP but improve the high-ISO noise as compared to the A900.
Pie-in-Sky / Wishful thinking department
* Seriously, put the viewfinder / EVF at the BOTTOM of the camera body so we can get the viewfinder very close to our eyes and not get nose grease on the rear display.
* Would love a feature that would allow a smart phone to attach to the camera and provide tethered live view / camera control / intervalometer function.
* Actual radio for wireless flash triggering. (Can be used reliably outdoors without having to invest in PW’s and lose TTL.)
* As many have suggested, be the first to provide user-changeable filters in front of the sensor – Infrared (for astronomy and technical work), AA if possible.
* Capture 3D data of the scene so you can create dramatic lighting after-the-fact in software (see my blog post about this invention here: http://friedmanarchives.blogspot.com/2010/02/camera-of-future.html).
* Finally, stop calling the semi-transparent mirrors “translucent”. 🙂
> Finally, stop calling the semi-transparent mirrors “translucent”.
Or call them what they are: 70/30 beamsplitters. 🙂
Gary – great to see your input here – I love your newsletter, and own your Minolta 7D book – great stuff! Great well thought out comments.
* Couldn’t agree more about the controls! I love not having to go through menus on my 7D to change settings – please Sony bring back more manual controls – I care very little for a LCD on the top of the camera.
* Built in 2.4 Ghz flash control. We can fly radio control helicopters with 2.4Ghz, control our stereo’s from our smart phones via 2.4Ghz, we can buy cheap after market 2.4Ghz flash triggers – why persist with line of sight triggering that has greatly reduced range in Sunlight? Then we could use TTL with it too, and not need a pop-up flash.
* I don’t care about EVF/OVF if you can guarantee that when I look through the viewfinder that what I’m seeing is what the naked eye can see – and last time i researched this the eye has about 30 stops of dynamic range. I realise EVF makes room for the phase-detection AF etc and there’s some hard engineering to overcome – but I don’t want to look through an EVF in a dark studio only to see hints of what’s actually there. Of through an EVF on Sunset to see a glorious sky but a dark landscape or vice versa. So maybe OVF is still better at the moment? (i haven’t tried the new A77 EVF yet – so maybe this is okay…)
* Megapixels – I have only 6MP on my 7D – and most of the time it’s enough. If Sony is ramming up the up megapixel count and sacrificing image quality by increased noise then I’m not interested. I’d be perfectly happy with 24MP if it gets better dynamic range and better ISO capability than the current FF sensor
* weather-sealing – looks like you’ve started this on the A77, so keep it going please 🙂
* I was ready to buy the A900 when it was released – but when my pro friends who are using 5D MKII’s with HD video and getting pro work for video and stills and the high ISO quality on the A900 wasn’t quite up to scratch I decided to wait for Sony to better it. I thought (hoped) it would be only 12 months. Sony I’ve been waiting for you to deliver for a very very long time. I’ve learnt a hell of a lot in that time anyway, but still I’m over the waiting already…
My two cents – there are things here that I’m sure other people have said, but here’s what I would care about in a full-frame alpha body.
1) Video mode.
– Keep crop factor the same as the sensor. I understand with at least the VG10 (and others) that video mode had a crop of ~1.8x on a 1.5x sensor. If I wanted a tiny crop I would have gotten a GH2.
– Diminished Rolling Shutter. While it is mostly removable thanks to the guys at The Foundry, there is no other reason why I’d buy that $500 plug-in. That’s $500 more I can put into a full-frame camera.
– Removable SLT mirror. What everybody else has said, plus the ability to mount PL lenses without damaging something.
– Higher sampling rate. 10 bit colour sampling would be a nice addition. Considering the aliasing problems with other cameras, this should do something to alleviate the problem.
– Anamorphic friendly. Having a quality 4:3 video mode would allow people with anamorphic lenses to frame their compositions correctly and have a 1.85:1 picture in post without having to crop off the sides. If its a good-quality codec, you might steal everybody with an expensive anamorphic adapter.
– Clean HDMI monitoring. I personally could live without this but some people would enjoy it.
2) Stills
– Good low-light performance. Not saying that it is going to be bad on a full-frame camera, but don’t go crazy on megapixels with the cost on high ISOs.
– Focus Peaking. This goes for Video Mode as well, but in case somebody decides not to use the SLT mirror, they have a focusing aide.
– In-body stabilization. Also a good for video, but something to make me feel good when using it handheld. Speaking of handheld…
– Ergonomics. I don’t mind too much about camera weight because I have a lot of heavy optics, but I do want something that my large hands can handhold comfortably.
– Wireless off-camera flash. I’m just covering my bases, but it saves time during setup. I’m not a large fan of on-camera flash, and I hate when I have to do it. Its nice to control the light.
For storage, don’t just put in whatever gets the job done. Put in two. Also, some people want CF slots back – I don’t care either way, but it would be nice to see.
I’m sticking to my current gear for now, but if that awesome full-frame comes out I would not only be a Sony use for a long time, but I would probably pre-order it. Its why I’m not buying one of the new SLTs that were announced. I have to admit, I’m mainly interested in the video capabilities of the camera as compared to the aspect of taking a picture, but this could corner the 5dmk2 market that is so eagerly waiting for a successor that just isn’t coming. It mirrors the strategy done with the new CineAlta.
1) I use a55 and it’s great camera. I only want to full frame slt will be same lightweight, same small size and nothing useless features like Top LCD (only conservative photographers use it). i’m never will use it and it’s will only occupy too much space (there can be some usefull buttons or something else) and increase camera’s value. Also, i’m absolutely serious, i’m NEVER, absolutely NEVER use viewfinder. I’m began to photography few years ago, and ALL my cams was with swivel display and liveview. So i so used to use swivel display and liveview that i always use it and i will never use camera without it, just because liveview and swivel display gives me so many possibilities in photography that i’ll never will get with viewfinder. I’m also think that really viewfinder is not necessary for even serious full frame camera. Because many photographers never use it, so for them and for me it’s only occupy place, and weight. It’s just conservative opinion that isn’t necessary. Really for me it’s just excess and you will find many non-conservative photographers that think same that i. I want full frame lightweight, small and without all that excess conservative but unnecessary for me and many same photographers features that make camera heavier, less compact, and more expensive. Why i don’t want full frame nex? 2 things: mount-a with carl zeiss lenses, and many other lenses and CONTRAST AF. Yes, you understand me right, i want exactly camera with slt mirror, but without viewfinder (at all), because i want compact, lightweight camera but with fast (like on slt cams), PHASE AF.
2) I want that you would fix that ghosts on slt, that makes some my great nightshots crap. When exist close a bright light source at night 25% that shot will be spoiled. It’s a very very big value and i have some beautiful pictures spoiled by this slt defect.
3) panoramas. vertical panoramas is great feature. i love it love it love it. i make many many many great shots using vertical panoramas (i just turn the camera on 90 degrees and get great, interesting shots just slightly longer than normal shot). But there is two BIG, NO BIIIIIIG problem with panoramas, that can be easily fix with modern technologies – moving cars and moving peoples. Vertical panorama make around 20 shots. And often, if in the frame moving person or vehicle – on panorama you will get weird effects like half man or half car or two same people or two same cars and it will be cutting or gluing on the boundaries of glued frames. I have invented genious and simple resolving of this problem. It can be hardly fixed by manually, but if you make such program in in camera software it will be easy fast and effective. Idea is – if i photograph building with panorama and i have road with moving cars in front of him – i will get photo with all that defects that i have described earlier. Solution is very simple – program analyze what i photograph – it analyze that on every of 20 shots i have building. So programs decides that it’s photo of building. Than suppose car pass in front of the building. Program decides – oh, on 20 photos i have same building (just shot with a little bit different position) . So car that i have on 2 or 3 shots it excess item, because on 20 i have same building and only on 2 or 3 i have some different object. So, program decides – this is excess object and program just cut this part of building (or anything that is the subject of photography) that corrupted by car or man, from this 2 or 3 photos and replace this part of corrupted photos from nearest photos, just a little stretching and adjusting part. It’s can be hardly and a long while fixed manually but with good program it can be easily and fast fixed. Program just must can analyze shots with a little bit different positions that i make when photograph panorama and compare it content (automatically stretch it and adjust it to make them almost identical and after compare it content – then just cut content that only presence on 2 or 3 photos but on other photos there no this content – and fix it with piece from nearest photo just stretched and adjusted). PLEASE SONY ENGINEERS it’s so easy to make this fix with panorama software, it’s really so easy solution that you have just do it, and i will can photograph panoramas even when cars passing by or man passing by. It’s so so so easy. Please just do it and consumers will be just happy with it.

FF NEX !!!!
Make it easy for developers to create their own firmware for the camera. People who don’t know how to make their own can pick ones made by other people and easily install it just like you can with android roms
And you will hear more about bricked camera, incompatibility with accessories, and a whole lot more problems with open firmware like that.
I don’t know if this has been said already, but the megapixel war is almost over, a1 prints without upscaling are now on the horizon.
Whoever takes the lead on dynamic range will be hard to beat.
More interactivity, more modding – sony could release an sdk and certainly provide support to create apps for their cameras – there are no one way processes any more. Sony need to create that feedback loop with their customers.
Better pro shooters using sony, by this I mean NAME fine art photographers – the big ones, theyre not hard to find, theyre not all still using only film.
Most professional users would stick with Canon or Nikon because of the lenses they already have and the large range available with proven quality. However I think more and more “Prosumer” are ready to go to full frame, so the question is what do they want? I for one would buy a full frame mirror less camera but only if it uses standard lenses (without any adapters!). Other specs could be similar to the NEX-7 (incl. HD video specs) with the exception of the ISO sensitivity. Here I would expect at around ISO 50,000. It has to have audio-in and a swivel viewfinder and screen.
Other features that would be nice but not necessary are some infra-red capability ala night vision googles and perhaps some double HD video capabilities… just as a thought though.
The price of such a camera would have to stay well below the $2000 mark! I could see this type of camera becoming the most sold FF camera.
If a mirror-less camera would not be an option, would I buy a fixed mirror FF SLR instead? No! I would get a Canon or Nikon instead. The same if mirror-less camera would use a new lens system.
So pppplllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeeeee Sony, please build that camera!
I agree with ability to switch between IR filter and none.
Maybe auto hyper focal distance
GPS tagging
Dng RAW format
Wide exposure range for ato bracketing for HDR
Clear and stable path for lens mount
Some more MP ok
Good ergonomics and controls.
Please make one of the FF’s a great landscape camera for a budget.
Currently using A900.
I desperately want to be able to shoot tethered using Capture One Pro. Currently Phase One doesn’t support Sony. Maybe Sony could specifically work with Phase One on this….
I would like to be able to shoot tethered with Aperture, also…. Currently there is a work around using a “Hot Folder”, but the transfer is slower than a native implementation…., as when using Canon and Nikon.
I would use Promote Systems’ remote control device to expand my HDR options, but again, they only support Nikon and Canon.
Is there a way Sony can help third party vendors develop their products to support Sony’s more advanced models at least?
I use HDR techniques for some of my commercial work, and while I can “get by” with the current camera features on the A900, both Nikon and Canon offer more flexibility on their top models. Please Sony expand the features for professional HDR. (…., I shoot RAW only, so the automatic jpeg HDR feature on some of Sony’s cameras doesn’t cut it for pro work).
I am a bit nervous about the idea that there won’t be a full frame body with OVF…., but I am open to the idea. ( Need to try the A77…)
Extreme high ISO is not all that much of a priority for my work. I am more interested in outright resolution…, and large files don’t bother me.
The closer Sony edges it’s way towards Medium Format quality the better, as far as I am concerned, and large files go with the territory.
I just next FF to be a D3S in Sony livery so I can use my Zeiss and G lenses on it.
Full frame NEX (or some other mirrorless/rangefinder format that is smaller than DSLR) because smaller really is better.
And please, perhaps magically, add image stabilization in the camera. It’s annoying relying on the lenses, and really awful knowing I’m paying extra for the stabilization instead of just paying for the optics every time I buy a stabilized lens.
Finally: waterproofing/weatherproofing. Not merely “weathersealing” but some actual proofing, please, ala the Pentax K-5.
Offer such a camera at around $2,000 and watch all the other companies, including Leica, weep.
Optical Viewfinder. I work in a camera store, and selling EVFs have nice aspects to them, but for studio work, a proper OVF is just key.
1) Affordable FF option, compact body size, 3-way tilt LCD with no electronic viewfinder (reducing costs) or sold separately as accessory
2) Vignetting correction for all Zeiss lenses
3) Contrast-enhanced HDR mode (automatically boots contrast on flat HDR pictures)
4) 3-way sensor stabilization (if at all possible)
5) Magic-bright LCD screen
6) 4-inch OLED LCD with 1280×960 resolution
7) USB 3.0 connection port
8 ) Glassless 3D-capable LCD screen
9 ) Built-in bounce flash
ps. Additional 100-300mm Zeiss lens
3D screen?? what the heck for? And a four-inch screen would make the camera HUGE. think of attaching an Motorola Droid to the back of your camera, and adding room for all of the additional buttons and knobs that Pros demand…..
LOL, obviously the guy is a gearhead, not a photographer. He just pulls all the current tech that would be cool to fit in the camera.
I would make it a 3.5-inch OLED LCD with touch screen. For a 36MP camera, of course you don’t want to just get stuck with a small screen to review your results.
Yes, 3.5-inch OLED LCD (1280×960) touch screen will be impressive, especially when everyone else still uses 3.0-inch (640×480).
Of course FF NEX! Not only a camera to compete with Leica, but also a body for A mount that is less bulky than current FF DSLR.
FF SLT is ok, it probably does fill a certain niche for fast action shots. But what i really want to see is a FF NEX and a ‘photography first’ FF pentaprism DSLR (continuation of A900 and KM DNA).
And hopefully they can squeeze the FF sensor into a DSLR body the size of A700.
So, FF NEX, and smaller/less bulky premium FF DSLR.
Regarding the Sony app store, i rather see a kit for Sony cameras on iOS and Android devices, rather than another app store for another device.
The point is, I want to be able to connect, see live view, and control my camera from my tablet/phone with and without wires.
What I thought will be cool:
1.dSLT with at least capability of translucent mirror lock up. what is better is capability of doing dSLR mode when in slow fps (<3) then dSLT mode for high fps (12)? In short kind of hybrid of dSLT and dSLR with EFV.
2.Even better EVF and high ISO noise capability. IMHO 36MP FF is more than enough with ISO up to 25600 and ISO 51200 in multiexposure mode.
3.If Sony decide to make 3 FF body (and point 1 is not feasible) then make 2 dSLT (1 plastic cheap body) and 1 dSLR.
My wishes..
With currently available technologies:
1. Bigger memory buffer. (#1 requested feature I think)
2. Large megapixel with pixel binning option for those who prefer smaller resolution. Advanced algorithm should keep noise level low with pixel binning – suitable for lowlight needs. The option is to offer 2 models – one with low megapixel, high ISO and high megapixel.. but that is what Canon and Nikon offer and this is rather boring, I think. It’s better to have two cameras with the same sensor, with two price range – like a850/900 and a65/77. Not everybody is rich, please offer an affordable version.
3. High FPS – possible with SLT. Sony, can you make a camera with 16fps? just so we can brag to Canon.. 😉 Oh, and selectable FPS is a very welcome feature.
4. Articulated screen. Don’t care if it’s ala a55 or a77, either is better than a fixed screen.
5. Multiple card slots. 4 is reasonable, but 2 is already better than 1.
6. Make a very cheap version of SLT FF.. I don’t really care how much you have to strip it down, as long as it is usable and Full Frame. Many will go for a heavily crippled FF over a top APS-C DSLR.
Not so available tech..
1. Global shutter
2. Modular system – add-on buffer, upgradeable EVF, exchangeable sensor, plug-in CF reader adapter.. and most importantly – programmable camera. Wow, like the introduction of the first PC.. I know, it’s more of a business restriction rather than technology.
3. In sensor PDAF module. Eliminates the need for a pellicle mirror.
4. FF Nex.
That’s it. BTW, please keep the good features of your current line up – Peaking, AF point placement(Canikon’s is just too centered), Multi-frame Noise Reduction, 3D Sweep Panorama, Auto HDR..
MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS MORE PIXELS!
I am a full time professional fashion and beauty photographer. I have been using the a900 system since it’s release. Overall I am very happy with the a900 and continue recommend it to anyone.
These are my requests of for a future full frame and full frame support.
• Higher Megapixels 34 – 45 would be nice: the higher the better. This is important and the main reason why I would upgrade. Those sating they can’t handle the hard drive disk space, a 2TB hard drive can be bought for $80, so what is the gripe?
• Better more accurate AF especially on fast primes.
• Better AF controls for micro adjustment or auto micro adjustment over different focusing distance points. (The Sony built lenses seem to be the worst for consistent micro adjustments, minolta and third party are fine and usually don’t need adjusting, why is that?)
• More reliable actuation count on the shutter (had two break down at about or under the 50,000 range) please make the shutter good to at least 200,000
• Overall body reliability. On 3 of 3 the a900 bodies I’ve used all 3 have had the same flash sync problem: The flash sync connector goes crazy or fails after some usage, this is using normal very low voltage/amperage connections as well.
• Better communication and disclosure with RAW converting programs ( the IDC program is not at a professional level so at least just make custom profiles available for Capture one and lightroom etc). If you think the IDC software is just fine please reconsider. Although IDC renders tones and color beautifully, I could show examples where the IDC software fails miserably at resolving sharpness and details where other RAW converter excel, the difference is not minor/ pixel peeping by any stretch, the results are glaring and obvious.
As a result I was using Captureone software to properly resolve the detail from the a900 , as a consequence, since no capture one a900 profile was properly submitted, I was using a default profile that was not very good at rendering skin tones for about 9 months until someone created and submitted a proper profile.
• Better faster repair support / More qualified repair stores worldwide. In Vancouver for example (greater Vancouver population 2million) all “authorized sony service centers” by default just pack it up and ship to main repair center in burnaby and they by default pack it up and send it to Toronto regardless of the issue. This is not good, efficient service. Also it shouldn’t take 3 months for minor repairs or any repairs.
I think it would be safe to say that the continuation of the a900 series would be geared to the professional shooter. If this is true; Pros need the assurance that they can get their gear repaired fast. After so many flash sync failures and shutter failures, considering the time it takes each time for sony to repair the camera I must say I have lost a lot of confidence in my system, I don’t feel safe at all and find my self wondering if the camera will fail on me.
This is to take away nothing from the excellent and very helpful service staff, they are just working the best they can within their very limited resources and means. Please spend some money in this area it will give Sony more weight when considering to jump ship form more established comer companies.
Keep up the good work Sony!
wow, i love your reply, very constructive!
mine suggestion.
1. better flash sync speed, so global shutter is a good go, or digital shutter sync of 1/500 is really cool, WL strobe creativity can go up another level
2. i know sony is researching phase detect ON sensor… my humble suggestion, you dont have to build it onto the main sensor… make it on the secondary sensor/AF module… that way, LV works like ala A300/550/580, with phase detect on the LV sensor… and best part is, keeping the Main Capturing Sensor COOL!!! physical NR. A55 overheat! after bursting 400 shots! and the noise increase pass 150th burst (obviously)
3. pls have 2 model, hi MP,(non iso concern) for studio/commercial shooter. low MP, great ISO for iso shooter(i dont know how to name them). so its like D3s + D3x 🙂
4. magically hybrid OVF over the EVF or somehow… come on, sony manage surprise us with the fancy tilting screen of A77, i am pretty sure u can come out something OVF/EVF/Hybrid kinda thing.
5. more AF point, with Better/smarter errr ‘option’ like zoning etc.
6. upgrade the ducking Metering. its the WORST…, time to jump on RGB metering wagon!
come to think of it… if we dont need a model with video, say videoless… then there is not need for SLT… and there is no need for 10fps…
just make one OVF with lownoise, it could easily be best seller!
those 3xmp, 12fps, hd video is “NOT WHAT I PAY FOR”
sony should listen to ppl suggestion on “Not What I Pay For” not what should i pay for…
I’ll put out some pro stuff that should be on here:
1) More autofocus points – Especially ones well past the APS-C crop-marks.
2) Faster continuous shoot rate + bigger buffer – Can’t ever go wrong with this
3) A good tethering solution – Start thinking about an open API. I want to be able to use my iPhone/Android as an intervalometer
4) Mirror Removal option
5) More dynamic range on the sensor. – Forget megapixels and high ISO. Give pro’s world-beating DR and it’s a new day
6) Keep improving the EVF – This is a place where bigger + higher resolution is better better better
7) Don’t reduce the manual control level like the A77. – Pros use the metering mode switch religiously.. they do not use the digital teleconverter
8) A body mounted lens weather seal
9) Quieter shutter – The A850 and A900 shutter sounds like a thunderclap. Can be distracting to people around you if you’re trying to be inconspicuous
10) 1/12,000 shutter. – Shoot outside on a sunny day with the 85z1.4 wide open… yes please
11) Ultra low ISO modes – ASA20 and ASA50 would be awesome
12) Bring back the STF simulator from the KM7D firmware – A rarely useful picture effect
13) 14bit colour.
14) Use the main sensor for hyper accurate metering / Tie the metering system to the AWB system – Most cameras have trouble metering monochromatic light… makes it difficult to shoot certain situations like performances.
sony beat the nikon d4/d4s (since most those nikon sensors are tweaked sony sensors) and market is yours.
next frontier for sony is a medium format mirrorless NEX.
one thing i would love to see that doesnt exist yet, is a dedicated black&white only sensor. if quality dynamic range is like film b&w, every professional photographer will want one to add to their collection.
In a new full-frame camera? Something like the a900, only moreso:
OVF. Please. 98% if it has to be.
Higher MP. Take the pixel density of the new NEX-5n and scale it up to full-frame. Pixel binning for low-light high-ISO. Perhaps 48MP and 16MP?
No anti-aliasing filter! Or at least extremely weak!
Live-view. Focus-peaking.
Phase-detect AF on the actual sensor. High-MP are going to demand really good, really accurate AF.
True 16-bit color, with a wider gamut colorspace like ProPhotoRGB.
Long battery life.
Three card slots: CF, SD, and memory stick. Or drop the memory stick and make it two slots, CF and SD.
Great ergonomics like the a900.
Just make it a great *camera*, like the a900, and not a wannabe video machine.
Completely alternately, make a FF NEX with high-MP and great battery life and I’ll go that way as well. Anything as long as I can do superbe work up in the mountains, hiking for a week at a time. Please?
How about hybrid AF, PDAF and CDAF? CDAF is good in low light and can be applied to the entire frame, unlike PDAF that is fixed. Just a thought.
Definitely MPG-2 video !
For me, the best FF Camera is Nikon D3s. If Sony will create a copy of that Nikon with clean high ISO, magnesium body and fast, accurate AF, than I will be happy 🙂
I don’t need translucent mirror, 12 fps and smile detection. I need a proffesional and solid body with good image output.
Here’s a list of things that would convince me to upgrade from my a850 to a 2012 Full Frame A-Mount camera.
1. a big, bright OVF (essential for pros) (essential for me) (in fact, make it bigger and brighter) (like a Pentax 67 viewfinder!)
2. an ultra high resolution EVF (see below for a wild idea that could make having both viewfinders an actual possibility whilst allowing for a higher number of fps in burst mode)
3. 30MP or 32MP or 36MP would be great. High ISO performance could remain the same (or be improved upon), I’m not at all unimpressed by the a850’s High ISO noise levels. Mind you, I like to light my photographs well with strobes or studio lights or the sun!
4. Voice recognition software that can add spoken text to the “caption” or “location” metadata header of the file. This would be really useful for photojournalists. (and would really knock the socks off of our Nikon and Canon colleagues!)
5. AF assist red beam of light could function much better. Perhaps if it was motorized and could “aim” itself at exactly where it was needed to be by making use of the AF distance and which AF point was used.
6. A couple more AF points. And it’d be great if all of them worked as well as the square-shaped centre point works on my a850. (my guess is that it’s a Minolta cross AF point as many of you have been requesting more “cross” AF points!)
7. Higher flash sync speed of 1/500sec or 1/1000sec would be wonderful.
8. GPS
9. video mode (if only to appeal to prosumer market) (any real pro who really needs a video mode and would like to be able to use his A-Mount lenses for video is also someone who’s willing to pick up a second body on eBay like an a560 or a580) (professional photographers need a professional tool for taking “still photographs”)
And now without further ado… Here’s an idea for how SONY could make OVF fans and EVF fans happy by giving us both…
Give us a big pentaprism OVF but give us the option of having a big EVF swing into place and into our view by toggling a button or perhaps a lever!
Better yet, make it so that our shutter button auto focuses (with phase detection autofocus) when we press part way down on the shutter, and then the EVF swings into view when we press an additional part way down on the shutter! It could be a three step shutter.
Now, obviously our dSLR’s mirror would swing into the “up” position in order to allow us to see an image on our EVF, but an interesting benefit to a system like this is that instead of us seeing black when each picture is taken, we’d see an EVF view of the scene! And… This could allow for many more frames per second in a burst, since when shooting a burst we’d keep the shutter pressed down and the mirror “locked up”.
Am I crazy? Would this work?
It might be jarring to be composing, viewing, and focusing on the scene as rendered by glass and mirrors, only to have a somewhat different looking version of the scene flash past our eyes each time we take a picture… But. It’d be great for pros who shoot in Manual exposure mode to get a quick reference as to whether the exposure needed adjustment from one shot to the next without having to stop and review.
Oh camera of the future, what wonders will you bring us?
You may or may not be crazy 😮 , but it wouldn’t work to “swing” the pentaprism out of the way. – where would it go? And where would the EVF be when viewing the OVF. I’m picturing a very steampunk contraption – I like it! I also like the out of the box thinking, though!
A hybrid system would need to be integrated with no moving parts to switch instantly between the two. Technology should allow (someday) for a see-through screen that could be turned on/off very quickly, so keep the dream alive!
Ha! I wasn’t picturing the whole OVF pentaprism “swinging” out of the way… I was picturing the EVF swinging INTO the pentatprism. It’d have to be an ultra high res and very thin EVF. I got the idea looking at my a850 and noticing the lever to the left of the eyepiece that “swings” an dark slide in front of the view of the pentaprism.
Just get rid of the semitransparent p.o.s. in the light path. Nex bodies perform better than super-hyper-high-tech SLT… it’s ridiculous. However, if you can make EVF not influencing picture quality (no compromises!) and speed (some compromises possible) i could live with it. Especially, I could have some benefits from it like articulating LCD (like a77).
If you make it super-b still’s and intermediate camcorder – perfect for me.
Make it as much customizable as possible. See to other brands and adopt UI solutions increasing flexibility. Certainly, i will not use all functions but I will choose my own area I need and use it extensively.
2 card slots, I don’t care about the type, however you could make them both the same. It must be two and hot-swapping, automatically switching. I need to have a capability to exchange cards in the run. Then the camera has to know when one card is replaced and the other must be activated. No additional switch I could miss to move. It’s a similar mechanical action to remove the card as moving the switch.
Adopters, adopters, cheap adopters… i don’t have to explain marketing aspect of it. Make all lenses and camera software capable of using any lens and flash system. Or at least, as many as possible. Make it cheap to make it famous and popular. Make them thin to not modify optical functions too much!
Just do it! Things wear out and brake. There must be a replacement.
A NEX FF with great DR and color, good video and prime pancake (mostly 35 or 40mm), non needs for huge zoom.
Another thought..
Articulated Screen locking mechanism. Lever, screw, whatever.. as long as user can lock it when not needed. Can be locked with the screen facing in and facing out.
Optical View Finder model
Hey that dying city in Belgium your talking about is “Doel” right? I live like 15 minutes away from there. Cool place.
Yes it’s Doel!!!
Not a KM/Sony user but have been impressed by Minolta’s quality and innovations back in the film days. My suggestions and expectations:
1. All the goodies and strong weatherproof construction found in a traditional hi-end pro DSLR, nothing less;
2. Traditional OVF please, no hi-res EVF (it’s more of a gimmick);
3. 1/12000s shutter with carbon fiber (or better) shutter leaves if possible;
4. 14-bit or better A/D;
5. High pixel count sensor (at least 24MP) with excellent dynamic range (10-12 stops) and high ISO performance;
6. Hybrid AF system; continuous shooting speed of 5fps or better;
7. Articulating screen preferred but not absolutely necessary;
8. Dual card slots (CF I/II and SDXC/MSD combo);
9. Switchable gridlines on viewfinder screens, plus swappable screen options;
10. Video capability not absolutely necessary, but if included, MUST defy the usual practice and include BOTH PAL/NTSC compatibility (24/25/30/50/60) for ALL units worldwide; also must enable full manual controls for video shooting, and include special features specifically for video (zebra pattern etc.); also body chassis must have excellent heatsinking capability;
11. Standard wireless remote control (it’s Sony, should be a piece of cake) including programmable remote shutter release, interval timer functions, dedicated mirror lockup control, core video control buttons, etc.
Wish-list for the next Sony-FF-Camera:
# Make two models, one high end, one VERY affordable
# big viewfinder
# possibility to flip the display on top of the camera, so I can use it like the waist level finder on my old medium format camera
# possibility to connect with laptops or tablets to use the big screen as viewfinder
# possibility to connect with external hard drive via USB (for long video files)
# peaking mode or AF control of manual lenses (I use medium format lenses from the 70ies)
# no sony-only stuff, make it compatible (use standard USB cable, CF Card not Sony memory stick, adobe raw format and tiff, jpg compression steps 1-12 like in Photoshop, …)
# built in second tripod mount for portrait (like in the Pentax 645d)
# built in vertical grip (camera will be smaller then an attached vertical grip)
# for Video: built in steady-cam software
things I forgot:
# Ergonomics for my big European male hands, in the winter with gloves
# direct dials for main functions (aperture, speed, iso, aperture compensation)
# bring the viewfinder closer to the eye, my nose needs more space
# widely arranged AF points
# possibility to shot in different ratios (1:1, 2:3, 16:9, 1:2,3 (cinemascope))
I’m enjoy using my NEX C3 with the Leica m mount lenses I have. Great combination. Heaven would be a full frame camera with a focal plane to lens mount distance that would allow full frame use of such lenses. I’m guessing this is unlikely, though, since Sony would need to start yet another line of lenses when they should stay focused on filling out the existing NEX E mount series, right? Or maybe Sony should just give us another great body and leave the lenses to Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander…. There may well be a market for that given the number of new and legacy range finder lenses already out there waiting for a well made, affordable, digital back end. Anyway, just thought I’d weight in.
Using A55 and A850 currently,
Would like to see the following features on new FF,
Improved JPEG engine,
High ISO usability – up to 6400 to be able to retain good IQ will be a winner
Built in wireless flash controller/ or an external wireless flash controller unit offering group , flash ratio control
Great 3way tillable back screen
Full digital shutter – allows silent shooting, and higher flash sync speed !
Start a new series of flash gun using radio n infrared control with weather sealing
Body should be weather sealed, and IP 55
Improved drive AF motor, this helps to improve AF speed of current lenses
Customisable creative styles slots- to customized our own set of colors , hues, etc
HDR combi shots up to 5 shots, in RAW mode
Min 10FPS with continuous focusing and manual controls available
Pls resolve the EVF blindness when using flash settings with 3rd party radio triggers, the trigger at pop up flash is not a gd design, should come via the contact points of hotshoe.
redesign of the semi-tranparent mirror system in such a way that the main portion of light is REFLECTED and directed towards the sensor, using the transmitted light for the AF.
the current design is just the other way around and can produce ghost images, which would be a complete no-go for a expensive, high-end FF camera!
add an option to record [3…10] sec audio with each shot (with fade in/out). Imagine a slideshow with the audio from the time of making the shot: this sort of slideshow is the next step of slideshows! Or imagine this with 10 frames/sec photoslide.
Yeah…NEX FF. The digital version of Contax G2. G2 was the most advanced rangefinder and a Leica killer! By the way, the Contax brand has returned to Zeiss…How about a Contax D2 made by Sony…
Most of the above, plus
Multi-exposure!
why is Nikon are the only ones who can do it?
O, and an option to TURN OFF high ISO noise reduction!
And the same hotshoe as everybody else
make a full frame nex9 that can fit adapters for leica-m lenses and i will soooooo happy sony. doesnt have to be e-mount, could be e.2-mount or something. but it needs to be
1.)mirrorless
2.)full frame
3.)can use adapters for leica-m lenses
Imagine a traditional FF DSLR design like a KM7D with knobs and pentaprism and phase detect array below with two more hotshoes built into the vertical grip for strobists.
1. make the mirror electrochromic with two sandwiched layers of OLED or smartglass lcd panels The two panels darkened will be reflective and reflect light into the pentaprism and enable OVF while the top sandwiched layer can be used to effect metering and other info into the eye. So we see a optical image with data overlay or a crop factor view if attaching cropped lenses.
2. The two layers of OLED will effectively have total darkness as OLED is the darkest available panel now. The two mirror panels will turn transparent for the sensor to take the picture. OLED thickness is less than 30 micrometers per OLED so incorporating into a standard mirror system is not too hard. Also the mirror can be raised if needed to reduce ghosting effects.
3. The two OLED panels can effectively act as first and second shutter curtain so can act as a very fast global shutter system together from 1/500 to 1/8000 sec producing a very fast x-sync speed ( cutting one advantage of medium formats with their leaf or global shutters and high x-sync speed. )This way the Sony flashes will not have to do any high speed sync multi-flashing which reduces their effective power. Pro shooters with a lot of strobelights will want this for outdoor shoots as you can use the full power of the strobe.
4. The OLED panel mirror can also be used as a neutral density filter to reduce the scenery brightness by programmable stops. It effectively means we can reduce the ISO to 50 or even 10 so as to get building shots without people in public areas due to long exposure time. Graduated neutral density filter for scenery shots or even a crude adjustable neutral density which might be helpful for uneven or irregular horizons/skies, this can be enable using a touchscreen lcd panel on the back for drawing which part of the scenery needs darkening. Might even be good for wedding photographers who have to deal with extreme whites and blacks?
5. Pros have a need to always control their multiple flashes via the fastest method. Copy the Nikon Creative Lighting System. To change flash settings, press the flash popup button to enable either the flash syncs or the flash EV using the dual front and back dials. To change more flash things, do a double press to enable the selection of multiple flash ratios or switching off of main flash EV and only use as wireless controller. Make another two more hotshoes which have seperate on/off switches under the vertical grip for more wireless lighting options.
6. Use a laser grid camera focus assist lamp to produce a square pattern either on the left top of the camera or directly in line. The vertical grip can incorporate one also so that it at the bottom right of the camera. Sony F707 / F828 cams had hologram laser AF systems in 2003. On the subject of AF, why not incorporate a laser rangefinder function in the vertical grip also.
7. Most pro lighting shooters are Visual and kinesthetic minded so need tactile muscle memory dependent interfaces to use their cameras. Knobs best, if not programmable buttons and lots of them. progammable as single or multi press. And also two button press if possible like the Nikon system.
8. Enable custom hand grips for different holds and shooters.
9. When shooting multiple long exposure shots, just use the first dark frame instead of always redoing the dark frame noise reduction as it effectively doubles the waiting time. Only if the exposure time is changed then start another dark frame.
10. To improve the black white dynamic range don’t let the camera use the color information ( demosaic ) to reprocess the shot. Get the info right from the four same color Bayer point and use their pixel dynamic range which effectively reduces moire patterns ( due to demosaic ).
11. Speculation, for CMOS sensors, sample the sensor data a few times during the shutter capture cycle to see which pixels are getting blown or overexposure and then use the previous samplings averaged to reduce the brightness for those pixels. This makes for a more filmlike response to the sensor. Can be done if the camera has very good buffers.
I’m very excited about the A99!!! I have a A33 and after a year I can say that i’m totally satisfied with this camera. I would like to know how A99 is going to be (..another monster of camera, maybe?) But this is what I think about sony: although I do love products from SONY from TV, earphones to Cameras, I’m only worried about a thing…mirror less has been a huge success but see this, why you want 12 fps in a camera? cameras nowadays seem to be like camcorders!!! And sony is forgetting one of the most important thing in a camera: Low Light perfomance… The SLT cameras are great, but if you want to take some photos at night, forget it…That’s why I’m a bit worried about A99, because it can have 36 MP, 15 FPS, etc…but why is that matters, when the ISO performance is low? In my opinion they sould improve the mirror less in order to get 100% of the light into the sensor! Cheers :b
APS-C with OVF peaople are looking forward since A700 has left from market
Full Frame with the OVF something like A900 but with new sensor ‘
Full Frame with small amount of Mpix to have better ISO and DR
it could by very fast SLT
More SLT/SLRs with the Compact Flash cards slots
CF are faster than SD cards
Full Frame NEX
Radio wierless Flash controler to use and old and new Sony flashes together
Vertical Grip for A65
Why always operating temperature is 0-40 C even in A77
The other DSLR manufactures have some models with this parameter rised to
-10-50 C
16 bit image files
Lower resolution (16-20mp) model with best in class noise performance up to ISO 6400.
Pocket Wizzard equivalent wireless flash support: Improved wireless flash control with TTL enabled via RF.
Maximize the distribution of AF focus points such that that they cover most of field of view
Adjustable EVF position (similar to NEX-5N EVF attachment)
Dual memory card slots (at least on CF)
Silent shooting mode with full electronic shutter
Wireless file transfer
I had a dream (literally).
A mirrorless FF having a “square” shape (like D3 but not so big in all 3 dimensions) with e-mount and both horizontal / vertical grips. It was made by magnesium but it was covered with rubber for near water proof protection.
And then I woke up…
Wow, I dont how admin going to filter your guys ideas and suggestions, it is huge scope =.=|sweat
I think Sony probably needs to make two models of FF that are markedly different unlike the A900 and A850 were. First up, a traditional FF DSLR with an OVF that will interest Pros and purists. The 100% OVF on the A900 is great and even the 98% OVF on the A850 was very good. No EVF will come close to those. A 30-36MP sensor with much better noise performance (than the A850/A900) is essential. Better autofocus and faster performance is needed to beat the Canon/Nikon FFs.
As a second camera, an SLT FF with all the video trickery that some people require. It will need a bigger and higher resolution EVF than the OLED finder on the SLT-A77. It can use the same sensor as the OVF model. This will give Sony 2 FF cameras that appeal to quite different buyers unlike the A900/A850 duo.
Personally I’d want the OVF model. I’ve yet to see an EVF that I’d be totally happy with, especially for full frame.
I made the calculation that if the new FF sensor would have the same pixel density as the one used in NEX 5n it’ll be 37,5MP. Looks like perfect for the next gen of FF.
I believe….make a better camera is easy for Sony (or minolta as the spirit) since a few decade…but make them “selling well” all around the world is a still a homework….make the selling well and be a market leader must become a Sony Alpha’s dream
1, Sony should work on pixel level metering for increased dynamic range
or could be,
2, There should be sensor recording multiple ev values in same time, just
one click and a blending of properly exposed, neglecting dark and over
highlighted areas for increased dynamic range.
Highest mp sensor possible. 34 or higher
Heavy duty switches I use a camera all day every day in manual constently adjusting shutter and aperture and switching on and off auto focus.
Focus lock button should be located on back and not have to be held in with finger
Video with manual or auto exposure control
iso down to 50
High flash sync, 1/500th at least
Wired remoted jack
fast accurate focus, the a700 is a bit slow and I have to move the camera to focus sometimes.
some memory built in for storage when on site and don’t want to get a new card. 4gig after card is full
two axis leveler in vf for rotation and vertical squaring.
keep the price close to a900 or under 3k at least
up to seven shot auto bracketing in up to 2 stop ev steps
and last but not least…….hurry!!!!! Up !!!!!!!!
Adaptive EVF, which prevent straining the photographer’s eye, moving from dim environment (e.g. dark indoor) to the bright EVF or dim EVF to bright environment (e.g. Sunny outdoor).
The adaptive EVF should adjust gradually to the correct level of light emit form the EVF in order for the eye’s iris to adjust, so that there is no sudden change in light entering the eye between the environment and the EVF. That is the EVF brightness should also be based on the environmental light (e.g. dark indoor or bright sunny outdoor).
A camera with a noise response comparable to the Nikon D3s. We don’t need a 24 or 36MP sensor if the noise respond is not good, a 12MP is more than sufficient in most cases.
A user select-able complete electronic shutter-release for completely silent shooting at indoor events (e.g. for slower shutter speed – 1/250 and slower).
The next upgrade to translucent mirror technology?
Remove the mirror itself! Imbed the autofocus sensors within the image sensor. a few Kilo pixels in a multi Mega pixel image sensor chip could be dedicated to the autofocus job. one chip dual purpose.
– LEX MEOLL
Quiet and light-weight but not too small
FF, 24Mpx, high dynamic range, low noise at high ISO
option for auto ISO even when using manual shutter & aperture
PNG instead of proprietary RAW format
100% EVF but has to be better in all conditions than OVF
EVF with ability to lock-up mirror (to remove glass from optical path)or better still, use main sensor for autofocus
Ethernet or USB3 support for tethered shooting (USB2 not fast enough)
Tethered shooting support in Lightroom and Capture One
Micro-focus adjustment for individual lenses
Camera-controlled radio wireless flash
standard coax flash socket
GPS built-in
Lens correction built-in, including option to correct RAW/PNG, plus database user-expandable (i.e. not limited to Sony lenses)
> PNG instead of proprietary RAW format
Think you meant “DNG” — THAT would be ground-shaking! Amazing! Celebrated! The buzz would be deafening…
Won’t happen, Sony luvs them some proprietary anything.
> Camera-controlled radio wireless flash
I want to +1 that ! (With TTL, of course) (And PW compatible.)
How about customisable UI..
Make it so we can choose what menu options come up when we first push the ‘fn’ button..
Maybe six or eight slots to fill…
???
My Fullframe wishlist:
1. All features of the A77, including built in flash (don’t drop it as on the A900) – if they can be improved, then fine.
2. Definately keep the NP-FM500H. Different batteries are a pain if using multiple cameras.
3. Please, please go back to Compact flash. Keep the SD/MS slot by all means, but include CF.
4. Make sure the buffer is capable of storing 3 seconds of pictures at the top speed (so 12fps would need a buffer of at least 36 raw shots)
5. High ISO Capability – Noiseless at at least ISO6400.
6. If SLT (a thought would to be to have both SLT and SLR models) then allow the mirror to pop up when shooting as per an SLR.
7. Better dust control.
2 Models please- 1 with all the video and stuff that people now seem to like and a more basic camera with a more basic price just for photography.
AF/MF-A/M/S/P-SSM and great high ISO.
3 years on the A900 is very underrated and a superb camera with a few quirks but my Leica body cost over twice the price and has 5 quirks/faults for every 1 on the A900.
David
Compatibility with Minolta A-mount, Pentax K-mount and Nikon F-mount.
Including Autofocus functionality.
Via some kind of well thought system of adapters.
(When combined with idea of interchangable senzors,
we come to system simmilar to the Ricoh’s GXR. It is not key idea of this post but possible extension. The key idea really is support for cross-platform compatibility of the three mentioned platforms.)
Honestly?
Great high ISO performance
Fast/accurate focusing
decent fps
weather sealing
all at a competitive price.
The ability to take beautiful images across all ranges of available light. Ie, image quality & ISO. Nothing else really matters.
If Sony concentrates too much on bells & whistles, gadgets, ridiculous MP counts etc etc it will lose its focus on the basics. If Sony gets the important things wrong it will not win back pro & semi-pros. So please Sony make sure the core capabilities are hit out of the park!
If they get these right then customers will forgive lots of other sins, but if they get that wrong it will be a long hard road back.
WOW!
What a great positive views here and am sure the new Sony Full Frame cameras is going to be the winner for all kinds of professional photographers, leaving other camera’s makers quaking in their boots!
I’m old school photographer and OVF is what I’ve been brought up with, even today with my present a900 (what a camera!) I would very much like to ask Sony if they will be faithful to continue OVF Full Frame Cameras as long as possible – (p.s. I’m not that old by long!)but I don’t see no harm bringing out the EVF as well ?
I’m very happy with the camera size, maybe a little lighter if you can, and I think Sony don’t need to make it smaller, because as we know people living in the west side of the world have larger hands, that is the fact!
I’ve borrowed a NEX and I’m being honest here, I didn’t like it, because it was too small and I had hands cramp! I’m not the only one who has hands cramp too! (ooops Sony!)
More MP 48 ? Why I often do cropping, so it will ideal.
Lower than 25 ISO ? This would bring out the noiseless picture in the world!
Live View would be useful like the a77, but can Sony make it viewable during in the bright light ?
I’m with most of the guys on here with all the needing extras and of course no video mode please, that is the real reason why I and the others too brought the a900 in the first place!
Just a thought here, if Sony make two or three Full Frame cameras, ensure the (1st) OVF and (2nd) EVF, both have the same performances, only one of the (3rd) EVF Full Frame Camera have the Movie Mode to keep the others happy ? This is not too much to ask isn’t it ?
Sony, keep up the good work and one day Sony is going to be the number ONE camera maker for the professionals! Including the Semi-pro too!
I bit you a good luck!
Phil.
P.S. Can Sony make their own rechargeable batteries for the flash ?
What is wrong with the video mode? It doesn’t affect the camera’s ability to take picture. It’s mostly software related.
Dear Sony, let’s remove the mirror from SLT and here is the plan:
Extend the sensor-shift stabilization system to make possible to move the sensor also front and back. This will allow fast contrast AF with any lens. Instead of try-re-focusing of lens, camera will try-re-position the sensor. I know – it sounds crazy but may work 🙂
Hi agree with you:
Professional must have the OPTICAL VIEW FINDER!
Please Sony, you could surely make the best FF sensor, but please think about old school photographers: OVF –> YESon professional camera!! . And if possible Fill in Flash. Do you remember the Minolta Maxxum/Dynax/alpha 9 Film Camera?
I love My A900!!!
Ciao from Italy
Before Sony launched the A900 they asked photographers around the world if they wanted to be involved in shaping the new camera. I like many others sent in suggestions for improvements, none of these proposals was accepted! So I doubt that Sony really listens to us users!
But if, as I have also this time some suggestions that I hope they “embrace”.
Out of all: NO VIDEO, I think many of us who use the camera in our proffession want a real still image camera and no hybrid with a lot of extra electronics and such for a video that is never used! Make every effort to make a market leading professional still image cameras.
Since the most important of all: Speed and so noise-free camera as possible! Will Canon and Nikon to remove noise, so it would be quite amazing if Sony cant manage this???
One very important thing is to NOT use the slider controls for the on / off switch or other switches, they collect dirt and become unusable after some time. This was one of the comments that were presented before the Sony A900 would be built but ignored by Sony! Such a simple thing has cost me a huge amount of problems.
It should also have built-in transmitter that can send images wirelessly to a server from anywhere in the world!
Then you have to weather-proof your lenses! Now you have the world’s finest optics in the Zeiss and so they’re not weather sealed???? How stupid can you be???
And where are the telephoto lenses??? Now you have promised a 500mm for almost 5 years ?????? And where are the 400 and 800 lenses? Do you not see what Nikon and Canon have their optic programs??
You’re kidding with us, photographers, or do you think we are stupid? Minolta had a series of very good telephoto lens, why did you not continue to build on these because you obviously can not develop your own telephoto lenses. It should not take 5-6 years to develop lenses that are already there!
I chose Sony because Zeiss optics, but since there is no reaction from your (Sony) side, I’ve grown tired now. It may well be a return to Nikon! But I do not think you care about, then the “respect” you have shown your customers are not worth anything.
Sorry to say this but this is reality.
Giuseppe,
The Dynax/Maxxum 9 did have built in flash. You are so Right! I guess we are the only ones that recall how great a built-in Minolta/Sony flash is. It is a master light controller that lets the remotes do 99% of the work! Genius if you ask me. It was a signature feature of the Maxxum lineup in the 90s. When you want to travel light, and simple, this feature makes a huge difference. I use my wimpy built in flash to control my one HVL-F36AM all the time. Nikon remembered to keep it in the D700.
It may sound petty, given the low light capabilities of it, but Built in flash is literally the biggest reason I didn’t pull the trigger on the a850 in the spring of 2011. I think it is quite a distinguishing feature, compared to CaNikons with full frame. I seriously considered the jump to Nikon for the D700, for just that reason, but I thought I would wait and see what full-frame Sony comes up with, and compare it to the next Nikon offering, since the D700 is getting a bit old.
Sure I could buy a Pocketwizard setup and the Sony FA-HS1AM Hot Shoe Adapter, but that is a lot of cash, and bulky, when the built in solution is surprisingly easy to work with and pretty effective.
I have a bag of Full-frame compatible Sony glass. I’m still open to selling it all and jumping to Nikon for their D800 or whatever it is, if it has a control capable flash built in, but I really don’t want to, if I don’t have to. This new viewfinder sounds like where I want to go next.
Give us a similar strategy like the NEX-5n and NEX-7.
PD,
hope is the last to die…
Sony Please FF with OVF and built in Flash. Photography remain an art: it is the art of writhing with light. It is so easy.
In my opinion Max 24 Megapix but very usable at hight Iso (2.500 ISO is really enough)!
Ciao Ciao,
Please Sony think about photography meaning when you realize the new professional FF camera: in that case don’t think about PS!!!
HI 😀
I find color correction in post processing time consuming.
Why not add a feature which creates a custom color/whitebalance adjustment profile in camera, from a photo of a standard color chart taken prior to a shoot?
This profile could then be stored and used to correct JPG/RAWs in camera.
Maybe DNG RAW output?
Important, with much improved high ISO performance compared to A900. A 24MP option should be offered with very low noise unlike the recent A77 ISO test images.
Hummm… I would say that my suggestion is quite simple.
Grab the Minolta Maxxum 9ti (or Dynax 9) and transform it in a modern camera 🙂
This is what we’ve done with A55… as our HD video camera – http://www.vimeo.com/fotofreaks
We have a couple of A55 and both has served us well. Fully manual for HDvideo on fullframe is very much needed to have the maximum effect. Manual control on audio is a must too.
I would love to see Sony’s next semi-pro/pro camera to have advanced time lapse settings.
The ability to ‘digital zoom’ when recording without loosing quality.
But the biggest thing would be for a ‘slight’ shutter! I travel and hate the loud shutter noise.
Please make a fullframe NEX.
My dreams for a perfect FF camera are:
1. Ability to upgrade sensor, buffer memory, processors, display and viewfinder (then you can use a very good body for many years without obsolescence problems and low investment for stay up to date).
2. Two (or more) shoot modes: a) normal (translucent mirror in their position); b) reflex: translucent mirror moves as a non translucent mirror; c) tripod: mirror lock up; d) ???
3. Software adapts steady shot for different lenses.
4. Steady image in the EVF (by software).
5. Optional interchangeable OVF/EVF.
6. All the current a900 specifications.
7. US$ 3500 with good 2.8 standard zoom and no more than US$ 2500/3000 body only (bearing in mind my #1 dream of course).
able to shoot raw in not only L, but M and S size
I shoot Nikon, but I’m here because I’m seriously looking at committing to the Sony system with Zeiss glass. Here’s what it would take for me to switch.
FF sensor (obviously) w/ appx. 20MP+ sensor. I print large, but image quality is more important than megapixel count.
Low noise at high iso. The D700 can shoot at 3200 iso and the images are excellent. If Sony can match or better that could be enough of an incentive for some. (concert photography scenario)
FAST – ACCURATE autofocus. Again D700 51 point auto focus, sony just needs to be close. The important thing is that it has to lock on and be fast.
Increased FPS – 8 would be good.
Make it tough. Gear gets tossed around and the last thing we need on a shoot is a fragile body.
I know some people have said NO Video, but that’s not really an option anymore. Having the ability to shoot high qaulity video opens the door for a lot of freelance work. 85mm 1.4 zeiss with silent accurate autofocus in a FF format would have the 5dmkII crowd converting in droves. Sometimes fully manually is perfect, but sometimes run and gun with autofocus makes life easy. Let it shoot 60fps at 1080 and its game on! Sony has some great video technology (EX-3) and just a touch of that in a FF DSLR would go a really long way.
I’ve never shot with an alpha so I can’t comment on the menu, but it’s really important to be able to switch settings fast without delving into the menu screens. Make ISO/WB/Fstop/metering all fast and easy to change. I hate the cannon scroll wheel, I much prefer the menu system on the nikon.
I’ve read that the Sony has a great LCD screen. i need a camera that I can zoom in at 100% and see all the details if the shadows are noisy I need to know then so I can make adjustments. Not when I get back to the computer and I have to “fix” it.
Kick ass dynamic range. A variable dynamic range would be awesome. Not full HDR, but enough to when I get to a challenging scene I at least have a little assistance in camera and I don’t have to bracket everything.
I’ve always wanted an option to cover the sensor when changing lenses. I have switching lenses down to a time trial at this point. Sometimes i feel like my own nascar pit crew, but that’s only because I’m worried about exposing the sensor to elements when switching. What if there was a manual flick switch that lowered a plate that I could click down while I take my lens off and put the back on and then take the back off the other lens and mount it. i know I can use a body cap, but that’s an extra step, I’m looking for speed.
Make it affordable so I can buy two.
The more I think about it the A900 is a pretty complete camera.
-full frame NEX
-metal body
-optical viewfinder
-provision to turn off LCD
Dear Santa, I would like a FF NEX9, no much bigger but much better than the NEX7, with:
– electronic curtain and dustproof (scealed) sensor,
– 14 bit RAW,
– why not interchangeable sensors? (sport, night, art, video…)
– huge + fast buffer,
– GPS, WiFi and USB3,
– tehering (wired and wireless),
– either a bigger battery, or an inbody rechargable one (UBS3, …)
– weather proof body and lenses,
– high contrast 3 axes articuled screen,
– and decent lenses (35mm f/0,95, standard zoom f/1.2,…), even if it needs sensor stabilisation!
I know it would be kind of expensive, but.. professional.
We want a traditional OVF dSLR with new sensor (ISO performance is good) and old body (new sensor with in a900’s excellent body!!!)
Please!!!
* Automatic mode like on the a700, but enhanced with the addition of program shift.
* Open firmware. Users can hack on it. Keep the image processing and IS proprietary, but let us replace it with our own, and open up the whole UI.
* Allow both EVF and OVF. When the mirror flips up, instead of looking at the lens, we should be seeing a little LCD with live preview and high quality review.
* Allow the EVF to really gain up in really low light. E.g. if I’m in a dark room, it should be maximum ISO, 1 second exposure, 1fps update. The EVF _should_ be usable anytime the camera can shoot, but it isn’t.
It would be wonderful to have a FF camera with Infrared capabilities without a special conversion. More awesome would be able to have HDR or panorama with infrared. What if the infrared could be integrated in some percentage into a combo of normal light range and infrared. What if the sky could be composited to a normal range picture or some percentage of it. BTW… a time-lapse mode would be nice too.
I’d like to see Astro tracer module(similar to Pentax’s O-GPS module) which take advantage of the anti-shake function of the sensor.
NO AA FILTER! Increased Image Quality (Post processing can remove if needed)
PIXEL SHIFT! (Optional setting, All colours can be captured for each pixel as sensor is moved to capture full colour with each shot, like Hasselblad medium format)
ABILITY TO TURN OFF NOISE REDUCTION!!!! (Not just reduce. Image Quality sometimes suffers because of this)
These three things would increas IQ significantly.
Ability to Lock Up Translusant Mirror for mirror free capture (Increased light)
STAND BEHIND YOUR CAMERAS – BETTER SUPPORT! – I bought a new HXR-NX5u camera, 1 month old used twice and It is loses it’s presets and resets itself to factory. A real pain with the assignable buttons. Twice it would not turn on at all? Now Sony service has it and is waiting for it to replicate the problem there. Now they have had it 10 days and may send it back to me not repaired as I need it for a shoot the week after next. This is a new camera and it’s defective, why are they not standing behind their products? Twice it would not turn on at all? I have been purchasing and using Sony Cameras all my career since the U-matic days. from dxc 325’s to 537’s betacam-sp to d-30s to 570′ dvcams. As a professional I must count on my equipment, if it does not work . .I lose a client., that is why I have been with Sony so long. All I’m asking for in the camera is that is works as it is designed to or replace it with one I can count on to be reliable.
Maybe everyone has forgotten “bit depth”. An APS c sized imager with a bit depth of 12 to 14 is by far of greater importance than “full frame” 35mm size. A 14 bit imager on an NEX-7 would drive Leica to update their very flawed and horribly expensive M9P (freezing up and disabling memory cards, failure to correctly read full battery, deficient JPEG’s). Think about it… 🙂
Hi All…Sony Camera is good but the service they are providing is not good as per mine experience..As whenever we submit the camera for service they charge a lot & also after warranty expire camera shows problem…So its better to look for other brand rather then SONY…….
Lcd flip to left side or normal video output for cheaper “china made” mini tv (no hdmi)
A silent shooter sound
Manual controls for video
Zebra/peaking update to a33
A cooler (or two) for Exmor
Sliding mirror for manual mode
Auto-manual apperture for lenses
More cheaper grip’s for a33 in Romania
Every 3 months 1 free cleaning – sensor and lenses in autorised service centers ( for older not weathersealed alpha products )
Mp3 player (with rds)
For Beyoncee-processor, sorry ! 😀
Sony please create a machine that makes me a wonderful photographer.
What? It’s not the machine? Oh, my…
I wish it to be a Full Frame !
with :
Optical or at least even better than A77
100% viewfinder ><
More ZEISS !
More quality lenses !
M-mounts ?
Better ISO
Weather sealing !
More FPS
GPS
USB 3.0
More features (infra red, panoramic, gps,…)
and over all more pro !
Thank you Santa 😀
FF NEX!!!
1. A FF NEX and a FF SLT
2. Compact Zeiss primes for the FF NEX (50/2, 35/2 and so on!)
3. Good high ISO performance (Canon 5D MK II or better)
4. Great dynamic range (Better than every other camera out there).
Well , is it too late for suggestion now?
What i concern for the new FF camera…. is…..
1). VERY HIGH LEVEL OF WEATHER SEAL LEVEL…
– for a photographer , a camera which could be rely on it and take camera in different situration and weather condition will bring an advantage compare with other system , Olympus do a very good job with weather sealing , you always see some fotog taking some picture in heavy rain , snowy space which a think snow cover the camera , just look at the same level of camera of C & N , non of them have the same weatherproof class even of 1Ds and D3S/X , if Sony could introduce a camera with a weather seal level on par or better then E-5 , plus 1 or 2 high level weather seal lense , people with place a equal mark between FF Camera (of Sony) and Great Weather seal. it will attract some of the fotog to buy it.
2). HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE
I don’t know if new 5D3 or Nikon’s D800 / D4 will have a higher Dynamic Range , but it will be a selling point which could attract plenty of the people to buy it , higher Dynamic range is definitely a advantage especially at high contrast situation.
3). HIGH ISO LOW NOISE PERFORMANCE
Some of the people will buy the 5D2 , or the Flagship class 1Ds and D3 , sometime is buying it’s low noise performance at high ISO. while you need to take some picture for a target in motion at very low light , you need a high ISO speed to keep the Shutter fast enough to take acceptable picture , i’m a EOS 7D Owner , i was very upset while taking a dragon dance event at night outdoor space with a little light only , my fellow using a 5D2 using a much higher iso speed could take a very acceptable picture, while my EOS 7D could not … even in same lens same aperture and same ISO….. High ISO Low Noise Performance is quite important in lot of situation.
4) Overheat Problem
A55 facing a problem of Overheat while taking movie. Overheating is quite a problem for EVF camera as they using their CMOS to observe the view. although it won’t stop you to take still picture , a heated CMOS will effect the PQ for the Hot Pixel …… some astrophotographer will customize their camera with cooler system to allow long time exposure picture. So What about Sony to do something the same? for my view, is there possible to made a inter-cooler which control the temperature to a adequate level? This option will be very useful especially for the country always in a certain high temperature……
Actually for my opinion , the Line could be as below….Three Option:
New Flagship model……A1R (OVF) , A1T (EVF)
-Build-in vertical Grip (not only made it smaller, but also allow more internal space for the hardware)
-duel (or even tri)Bionz processor with large buffer space for burst shot (for SLT it is very important…. High FPS is no use if no buffer space)
-Duel CF card slot or CF card plus
-High Level Weather Seal at least on par with E-5
-19 AF Point AT LEAST
-ISO 100 – 102400 , no need too high , need for performance.
-Internal CMOS Cooling Function (For EVF version), or even a in body Micro-climate for A1 Series. if Flagship series is a build-in version , i think it must have some space for sony to consider it.
Budget Camera….. A99
– EVF (If Sony could introduce a OVF version of A990 , then it could made a comparison , then A1R above is no more necessery, but i think OVF is much more preferable for the pros )
– Single Bionz processor with acceptable buffer space
– 5 FPS is acceptable,
– ISO 50 – 25600
– CF Slots , or CF + MS duo/SD?
– Internal CMOS Cooling Function
For Both class camera , no need to join the high-pixel competition but please concentrate in the PQ side . Then it will be very promising for the C/N user to made a change.
– Optical viewfinder with 100 % view like alpha 900 !!!
– built in GPS
– optical preview button (aperture shutter)
– Program shift
– focus correction, individual for each lens
– built in flash
– quick and precise autofocus system that can compete with higher Canon models
– max. shutter speed 1/12000
– user friendly with buttons for each essential adjustment
– A-bajonet and compatible with older equipment like flashes
– weather sealing, magnesium case
– good high-iso quality
– removable sensor would be great
Well, as someone never use a full frame and will never thing of using any full frame… but if it can be in something like nex 7 or slight thicker or bigger body, that’s fine and I will try to own one.
Actually size does matter, everyone is moving fr PC to ipad and Tab, if technology permissible, why not.
I think sony are also surprise to see more pre-order in next 7 than A77, they should now know what to do, breaking the technology barrier is not our job, is sony’s job.
Once again, make the reflex mirror a translucent mirror so you can get the best of both worlds. Also include a lock button when you want it to stay fixed for video and image burst.
Sony a900 has everything I need except for good quality pictures, I am talking about low noise at high ISO (in a900 is already badly over ISO 600) and maybe a better LCD, faster AF and WiFi.
