I have found plenty of Tamron lens deals including on the majestic [shoplink 33575 ebay]Tamron 150-600mm lens[/shoplink]. And that lens also just got “Antarctica” tested on the new A7II 5 axis stabilized camera at Luminous Landscape:
The on-sensor phase detection AF of the A7 MKII and the system’s focus tracking capability allowed for capturing these completely unpredictable penguins as they jumped from the water. Their position can’t really be anticipated and their time above water is faster that ones ability to anticipate.Virtually every frame out of hundreds shot showed excellent lock-on and tracking. I frankly don’t think that I have ever used a long zoom lens / camera combo that could have done better.
That’s really great to hear! So let’s jump now to the Tamron deal offered by Trusted Store Prodigital which ships them all for free in USA/Canada:

“The on-sensor phase detection AF of the A7 MKII and the system’s focus tracking capability allowed for capturing these completely unpredictable penguins as they jumped from the water”.
Michael Reichmann clearly doesn’t realise the LA-EA4 has it’s own PDAF module, so the A7 II’s on-sensor PDAF would not have been active.
No doubt. So much confusion about A/Emount combos, on which cameras, and what to expect from them. Good job with that Sony…
Wonder how Reichmann would have faired with a77II and a99 instead.
Looks like the focus system of the A65 did the job so not sure that the A77ii or a99 would have brought anything more to the table.
Don’t talk silly. The A77ll is a much superior camera all round than any A7 lump of rubbish which is not only well overpriced but needs more spending on an adapter to make it work (to a degree) with lenses like this.
Of course the A77II has a far, far better AF system but my point was that you do not necessarily need better if you have good enough to do the job. On the other hand a performant AF system does you no good if you have to shoot high ISO. Anyway, mirrorless in general is a bad choice if you need to shoot long but the take home from the article for me is that the LAEA4 makes the A7x the “best” (or least painful) mirrorless option in this scenario.
I thought the A77II was made by Konica Minolta?
On the other hand, it’s good to know that the LA-EA4 is good enough (despite the flawed testing). Hopefully we’ll see an LA-EA5 with the A77ii’s PDAF module, largely so I can grab a cheap LA-EA4!
No better with an a99, the AF is so slow. The 5 axis ibis is probably a good step up from the older steady shot though.
“…The Tamron, along with an adaptor for FE mount cameras is the way to go”
Better get the LAEA-4 with A-Mount… other combos won’t offer these excellent AF results.
Based on mtf charts and on most reviews the Sigma sport outperforms this lens at the most important 600mm focal length…where the Tamron is generally considered soft.
The contemporary version seems very similar to the sport based on mtf, and Sigma claims, but of course hands on testing will be highly usefull when available.
You are correct.
MTF charts are basically useless since no manufacturer follows a universal measurement procedure, and some testers using both lenses say they are roughly equivalent in performance. You should wait before making claims like this until verified results are in. Doing so just reduces your credibility which is already at an all time low.
First …mtf charts are useful for comparing Sigma sport to contemporary, second I had a lengthy discusion with Sigma tech rep whos opinion was that in actual use IQ is almost identical and differences would require bench test to see. Built quality is much better on sport.
Most reviewers that seem to know what they are doing say Tammy is good up to 400 or 500 but soft at 600.
And that at 600 Sigma sport is much better.
Since technique is very critical with a long lens…that will have a much bigger effect that the lens quality, and is why many reviewers are really poorly qualified to review these lenses..
I say what I think , and most, but not all of it turns out to be correct…but I say these things long before most people are ready to hear it….and many people don’t want to jear it, so I have many critics…….look back 2 years at my comments and you see most of them have been highly critsized but are now history.
As for my reputation..I say what I think and don’t worry much about my reputation.
My comments are controversial and draw lots of comments, but they rarely get lost in the crowd.
That’s why god invented Imatest.

Evening Anton, wassup pal, how’s it hangin’?
Is that brocolli? In your avatar?
Way cool man! I love macro shots like that!
“he contemporary version seems very similar to the sport based on mtf,

Sigma 150-600 “C” will NEVER be available for A-mount. Forget it.
I am aware of that and you are correct…that is why I expect to be buying the Canon or Nikon high mp camera to use with the sport lens I am expecting to buy.
I am anxiosly waiting for news on the newest cameras but have preordered both to keep a place in line.
I am interested in the new Sony 90mm macro, but have not determined if that is sufficient to buy a new high mp Sony also.
The new Canikon will stay with the sport lens, so I can still use the Sony sytem for macro…or not? Depends what Sonikon comes out with.
wait…Luminous Landscapes is saying that while you’re using A-mount lenses, the on-sensor PDAF points are working… Is that true? I thought when you use LA-EA4 adapters, the AF from the mirror overrides the “Hybrid AF” from the camera… Anyone can confirm?
Luminious Landscapes is completely and totally wrong. You are right.
Which just goes to show how good the LA-EA4 can be… The interesting thing is it seems to have held up well in fairly challenging conditions without any weather sealing to speak of.
Thats exactly what I thought and was my experience with the LA-EA4 on my A7!!
If what he said is true that would be awesome, but I doubt it.
Yes, with the LA-EA3 adapter.
It is my understanding that the difference between the LA-EA4 and LA-EA3 is that the LA-EA4 has both a focus drive motor, to preserve AF functioning for non-SSM legacy Minolta & Sony lenses, and translucent mirror to offer traditional PDAF. However. all SSM Sony lenses will autofocus with the LA-EA3 adapter using the on-sensor PDAF or Contrast AF depending on the body you’re shooting with.
As far as I’m aware an SSM lens will only use contrast AF with the the LA-EA3. The OSPDAF isn’t geared up for non-native lenses.
A-mount has been discontinued…yet people are still buying A-mount lenses?!?!
A Mount hasn’t been discontinued….It’s just Sony who are incapable of marketing their best cameras because they think like food/street shooters and don’t understand that there are very many nature/sports shooters out there rather than still photographers.
What do you mean? Nature/sport and other action shooters are still photographers too, unless they only shoot video.
Sorry…when I said ‘still’ photographers, I meant ‘still life’ photographers.
I sell A-mount legacy lenses if you are interested
How do you take a guy seriously, when as an ‘expert’ he doesn’t even know his own gear?
Adapters can be a big part of the buying decision now. I would wager that ALL A-mount users considering switching to E-mount would research the adapters before buying any e-mount. What is the first thing a pro does with new gear? He learns how to use it properly before using it commercially. What a meat head. This is not a small detail to mess up on.
By knowing your gear are you referring to knowing the minutia of the technical details about HOW it works or are you referring g to knowing how to operate gear. Considering he tested out the equipment in difficult conditions and showed nice photos (in addition to writing for luminous landscapes), I’m convinced he knows what he is doing. The photos look great. So how did he use his gear improperly?
I wouldn’t have an issue with it if he wasn’t writing a clearly incorrect review. I was referring to the website as the commercial vehicle. If your job is to test gear and write about it to inform others is it not a requirement that you know your gear in order to do your job? Informing others with false info and trying to pass it as fact is about as poor a job as you can do when you are a reviewer. I’m not commenting on his photographic ability. I’m commenting on his journalistic competency which obviously lacking in this specific review.
I can respect that, although I can forgive the hybrid phase detection bit. It isn’t accurate since the camera does feature it. The fact checking on the fps is bad mistake since it could lead to genuine confusion by anyone swayed by the article who requires such a feature.
@Ghosts:
Your comment is worse than useless because it doesn’t tell me what precisely you have a beef with.
Why didn’t you quote the line[s] that so obviously upset you and the go about dissecting it to show why you think it’s rubbish?
Instead you rant like a small child, throwing your toys about in rage. Get with it – deal with the issue at hand and stop attacking the man.
He wonders why A mount version wasn’t made with stabilization but Nikon and Canon versions did. Maybe because A-mount cameras have IBIS?
How do you get 7fps out of the A7II when it’s only capable of 5fps? Did I miss something?
Probably using the amazing A77ll but doesn’t know the difference.
Sony should be shot at dawn for giving two very different cameras such similar names.
Then what OSPDAF he is talking about?
Hello, does anyone know if the a6000 getting an XAVCS update via firmware like the a77ii? Thank you!
No. It is more than 1 y/o, they want to sell a7000 too.
“And that lens also just got “Antarctica” tested on the new A7II 5 axis stabilized camera at Luminous Landscape:

A7II’s OSPDAF has absolutely nothing to do with focusing A-mount lenses. Who is this hack writing this BS?
That’s exactly what I was going to write. Sounds like a copy and paste from a brochure..however, I think he was using the a77ii instead of the a7ii..then again a77 doesn’t have ospdaf
Read the article, he is certainly referring to the a7II not the 77.
Third-party lenses are crap! Tamron, Sigma, Tokina, Cosina and the rest of them, they have no real optical expertise or sense of quality. Only the maker of a camera knows how to make lenses for it. That’s an irrefutable fact!
It’s better to pay whatever the camera manufacturer is asking for their lenses, rather than saving a few hundred bucks, only to get a lens that falls apart right out of the box, and that only lets through half of the light that enters it.
Serious, so you are saying that the lenses designed by Zeiss for Sony are crap too? There is brand loyality then there is short sightness and do you have first hand exprience of this or is this just a throw away comment? Si
Well he is being facetious, although Sony Zeiss lenses are first party lenses not third party.
Good point on the Zeiss lenses sorry but as for being facetious I cannot read between the lines so miss that one! Si
Why are all the pictures in the “Antarctica” test shoot with F11? Is that a fixed aperture lens? 🙂
