  1. Time to change this site’s name to Sony Alpha Deals. I can’t remember the last time you posted a genuinely interesting or exciting rumour.

Are you being gagged by Sony?

          1. Now that I think about it….the big a…… Hasn’t been around lately. hmmmmmm….

    1. I do think Sony’s curved sensor a few weeks ago was an exciting rumor. Also, the rumored 5 manual focus Zeiss lenses for FE mount is pretty exciting.

      1. That is no rumor. It was Sony publicity published prominently on their pages, similar to the Canon low light video 2 years ago. Greg got it right. There are changes.

        1. Anything Sony publishes is a rumor. Heck, the alpha mount is still a rumor- shrouded in mystery.

      2. “I do think Sony’s curved sensor a few weeks ago was an exciting rumor”.

Indeed it was, with the emphasis on “weeks ago”.

    2. I sometimes wonder the same thing. I could be wrong, but I think there used to be a lot more postings that were significantly earlier compared to the official release date than we see now. There was a consented attempt by Sony to shut it down around March 2012 (http://www.sonyrumors.net/2012/03/25/sony-targets-sonyalpharumors-shut/). Not sure if that came to anything. The other possibility is that Sony have implemented some decent secrecy (with serious consequences for anyone found leaking. Other companies manage this well – Apple for example), so not much is getting out. That, and Andrea always used to get shouted at when SR1/2 and even SR3s turned out to be wrong. Personally I’d like to see the “I’m going to tell you exciting things soon” notes converted into SR1-3s, even if they turn out to be wrong. rumours often are.

      1. I think the reason is simply that Andrea is seeing the potential to make money with Sony’s new emphasis on imaging products and with this site’s popularity. There’s nothing wrong with that. But sometimes this crosses a line and becomes distasteful. Amazon sales rankings don’t count as “research” or “news.” There used to be much fewer posts purely about deals.

    3. I was in the a7 series launch event. The presentation they used had a red “Confidential” stamp in one corner. They’re being more cautious than before because as you know, if your competition have an idea what you’re about to announce, they can counterattack with another product announcement, even if they have nothing ready.

  2. The B&H trade-in program is as joke. They’re giving basically regular trade-in value. There is no special incentive going on, and there is a limited list of equipment eligible.

  3. I shot with my A7s yesterday, not video but architectural stills, shot at 400 iso
pics are very very sharp, usable raw data processing in lr smokes my A850.

    I am happy!

    1. “Usable RAW data smokes my A850”
Now that is interesting. What exactly do you mean by that. Are you talking about PP noise out…getting details out of shadows. I’m curious.

      1. im not saying the a850 is a bad camera in todays standards – some people may use it for the rest of your life and be happy with it – but the original bionz a900/a850 sensor is quite old. i also owned an a850 for several years and i was not happy with the noise performance (if you olnly use it as a studio camera on low iso this might not bother you). switching to the a7s (or a7/a7r) you should also notice a gain in dynamic range.

  4. I shot with my A900 today and the pictures where still awesome. I then got a notice from B&H to trade that thing in for a less stellar A7. I realized it must be a joke- who would trade an a-mount in for an e-mount!

  5. Yes admin, I can’t wait to purchase one the E mount lenses designed specifically for the A series mirrorless full frame cameras. I’m sure the 70-200 2.8, or the 85 1.4 will be amazing.

Wait!! What??? You mean those lenses don’t exist? Ohhhh, so I lose a full stop of light and minimize Bokeh.

Ok, fine, the lens lineup isn’t great but how about the flash system, the support, the accessories, the focus speed? Not up to DSLR levels of Canon or Nikon, hmmmm.

Ok, I know, how bout the investment, that great feeling you get when you know your gear will be supported for years to come? Really?? Sony changes mounts every few years and then stops producing lenses for that system.

Ahhh, nahhhh, think the pros will
Stick with their updated gear from Nikon and Canon. The same reliable gear we’ve had for years and years.

But ahh, thanks for the laugh.

    1. Oh please.

Sony has been supporting a-mount since the early 2000s. The entire A-mount catalog is fully compatible with all Sony ILCs, this means AF, IS and focus distance limiters, even with the rarest and strangest lens designs.

All E-mount lenses are fully compatible with the OG NEX-3, which was released in 2010. You can put a 70-200 FE on it and it will work perfectly. So when has sony dropped anything in their system? Their dedication to provide connection between systems is amazing, and one of the reasons why I buy Sony lenses at all.

      1. Well, most likely we won’t see any new A mount lenses in the years to come except for some ‘updates’ without any optical improvements. Same thing for APS E mount.
No one’s gonna put the 70-200 FE on a tiny NEX-3. There are ton’s of lenses that are obviously lacking in the E system.

        – no affordable ultrawide
        – no fast zoom
        – no usable tele (I had the 55-210 and it was horribly soft on the tele end which makes it practically useless). Also, it’s impractically slow.
        – no affordable 35 equiv.

        Just to name a few.

The best timing to buy into mirrorless is when either Canon or Nikon get serious about it. Sony won’t consistently support its products, m43 lens prices are a grotesque joke, Samsung mirrorless may not even be around in a few years. Then there’s Fuji but most things are so expensive that you may go FF just as well.

        1. Why? The A77 II just came out with 1D-level AF tracking. Sony has a very decent lineup, and the alpha system is a natural extension of the FE system – the 24 f2 zeiss is a good enough ultrawide for the E system.

If you’re talking about affordability you shouldn’t be looking at an APS-C system in the first place. Tell me how much the APS-C equivalent 35mm options from Nikon, Canon and Fuji cost, then see if your complaint makes any sense. It makes much more sense to buy a FF body and simply put a cheap 35 on it.

          1. To clarify, I was talking about APS E lenses.

            1. We were talking about Sony’s native lens support right? But anyways, why pay 400$ for a 22mm equiv. when other mounts offer stabilized UWA zooms for the same price (Canon APS)?

            2. Yes, there is no difference between a f4 FF zoom and f2.8 APS zoom, practically speaking. The only related difference is, that an FF body costs more. Oh…
A fast APS zooms makes so little sense that almost every other manufacturer (and even 3rd party manufacturers) offer one. Good point!

            3. So you seriously propose that APS users should buy FF lenses just because? That’s utter nonsense unless you’re planning to go FF eventually which most APS users don’t. Most other manufacturers manage to offer teles for their respective formats.

            4. EF-M 22mm f2 is very cheap in a kit (or cheap in general), compact, fast, good performance. I’m sure there are ton’s of options in other mounts that have a better price/performance ratio than the Zeiss 24 1.8. For instance the Fuji 27mm 2.8 is also cheap (less than half the price of the Zeiss) in a kit, but slower.

And as regards adapting A mount stuff: Why go mirrorless in the first place? Better buy a CaNikon: better lens selection, same size.

        2. 1. UW? Put a Voigtlander on it. lenses wider than 24mm FOV don’t really need AF anyways. You set it to 5m and it covers everything from 3m to infinity.

          2. True, but an 2.8 zoom on APS-C will only be an F4 DOF equivalent on FF. It makes no sense to make such big, bulky lenses for crop systems – Fuji’s 2.8-4 zoom is DOFwise slower than the A7 kit lens through its zoom range.

          3. the 70-200 f4 FE is a world-class tele, and a very usable 105-300mm equivalent on APS-C. I won’t know why you don’t consider it an e-mount lens, since performance is even higher on crop bodies because of the omission of corners.

          4. The A6000 and the 24mm f1.8 is ~$1500, the 70d and the 24mm F1.4L is ~$2300. The Canon is a full frame lens, but you’ll have to buy one if you want 35mm FOV with a Canikon crop body.

    2. Which lens mount has Sony stopped producing lenses for and abandoned? I can think of Canon and Nikon mounts that were discontinued.

    3. Funny , so you are comparing the smallest and lightest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera to DSLRs ? for image quality it’s better than those Canon and Nikon DSLRs and cheaper too.
but this line is only 1 year old compared to the Canon and Nikon shit DSLRs right ? so you want every single accessory to be available in 1 year .. man so many points inside my head but obviously you are not worth the argument , just go buy a Canon or Nikon DSLR and get out of here

  6. B&H Photo denies the existence of Sony A35…while they take crap trade ins such as the ancient A100…wtf
