The funny guys from Sony Australia posted two more videos for the “DSLRgear no idea” campaign. Both are embedded here in this post. Enjoy watching them!
P.S.: great work guys!!!
Sony NEX. DSLR quality without the difficulty – Sideline Hero

Very lame commercials. Would have been better to just show the convenience of packing light, getting into venues that otherwise won’t allow SLR type cameras and most importantly, getting the shot a phone or point and shoot would botch. After all, NEX is for point and shoot upgraders.
No, Nex are not just for p&s upgraders, those may prefer m4/3, but for guys who want a light system next to their heavy DSLR- system. The action stuff however is misleading, as DSLRs are generally better at this…
“No, Nex are not just for p&s upgraders, those may prefer m4/3”
As might someone who owns a quality DSLR system but want to cut down on bulk and weight with a small form system with a reange of good quality lenses.
As others have stated, its not about the DSLT camera at all. Its that the user cant figure out how to use it; its too complex for them.
The NEX isnt only for these people, its just being marketed to them.
I Disagree. SONY need to communicate that NEX IQ is equivalent to most (eg. crop) DSLRs. They provide an excellent for someone who wants DSLR quality, but is not informed enough, to know about alternatives on the market.
They can do that without all the cornball antics.
Search YouTube for: Olympus Pen Commercial
And see what a great campaign looks like.
You mean like this one, with Kevin Spacey?

I think the message is very clear, and they are selling more NEX cams than SLT. Is this the beginning of SLT ending?
DSLT’s fate was sealed not too long time ago(rumorsly speaking).
It was already (rumorously stated – nice word) made clear that this isnt the beginning of the end of SLT, it is the end of the end. SLT is no longer going to be an option for new cameras.
But from this campaign, it is blatantly clear that Sony intends the NEX for point and shoot users who bought (or are afraid of buying) a DSLR and dont use it because its ‘so complex’.
It speaks volumes of good news for the A-mount’s future, still having a very important, top of the line niche.
I’m a Sony NEX user myself and I have used the a850 and a99 but…mmmm Those ads are like shooting themselves in their foot..
When you look closely, I think the SDLR in these commercials are A99.
I was thinking exactly the same. Anybody who knows the A99 and watches this will feel taunted by Sony. 🙁
No, this is not about the camera, it is about the person behind it. There are masses walking around with expensive gear without clue what they are doing. Sony is very honest about itself by using their own cameras thus admitting also Sony users may misuse DSLT cameras and are better off with NEX. Although it is slightly a false message since people with no clue about DSLR gear are likely not going to be better off with NEX, photographically speaking.
Understand that this is about NEX, not about dismissing DSLT.
If you feel attacked by these commercials, you might be a little bit too emotionally attached to your gear. Luckily, it is about PEOPLE with “DSLR gear, but no idea” and not about the gear itself.
Well, if it wouldn’t be about gear – they could make exactly the same with NEX. “Mirrorless, no idea”. Especially for the second video which looks EXACTLY like typical mirrorless user – with all photos out of focus, or lens cap on. lol
Second video actually shows the weakness of mirrorless, not a DSLR.
Well, the NEX cameras and lenses ARE expensive.
Yes it is in the second one they also show a taped A700 from Closeup. Strange that they have shown the best ASP-C body they ever made related to shooting poor Images. Its my favorite favorite Sony ASP-C DSLR in terms of Handling while others might deliver better Images on some points the A700 is very convenient to work with. (While delivering Images of good enough Quality for a lot of tasks if handled correctly.)
They need commercials like these because the general population still does not know the existence of mirrorless, and goes for the DSLR/SLT when trying to move away from P&S. What ends up happening is having the camera stay at home most of the time, and no development for the hobby.
at the same time though Sony does seem to be shooting themselves in the foot by dismissing DSLRs/SLTs
Agreed. And the marketing hits on all the relevant points for the general public. Smaller, same sensor and IQ as most DSLRs, and far less intimidating.
Sophisticated photogs who use Aperture Priority, process RAW and prefer adapted lenses, can do their own research and are already well-aware of the capability of cameras.
SONY is telling all regional offices to slowly discontinuing all DSLR/DSLT cameras and focus on NEX and premium compacts. They know NEX and premium compact is the future and there is no way A-mount will challenge Canon & Nikon. Rumor of future A-mount camera is like the persistent E-7 rumor among Olympus 4/3 shooters. Something to keep you buying lenses.
right, and they just released a weathersealed ZA 50mm f/1.4 SSM to use it via adapter with a NEX camera… cool story bro
You guys dont get our sense of humour. Lighten up I think they are great except for the Yank accent and the “bowlo” comment who calls lawn bowls that?? Loving my NEX. Fantastic for underwater
Whose sense of humour would that be? I happen to live in Australia and I find these commercials neither funny nor clever. And they’re not exactly truthful either, are they. No matter how nice the NEX cameras are, these ads are ultimately working against Sony’s best interest. Just like a lot of other things Sony has been doing lately.
That is a coincidence as I find Australians neither funny nor clever.
As evidenced by the commercials in question. Ergo, not a coincidence.
All the paranoid DSLR users here are simply a hoot! They genuinely believe these advertisements are undermining and attacking them and their photographic knowledge and skills. They should try to consider the audience this message is being pitched too.
They have some major balls to suggest that NEX is better for shooting action than DSLRs – that’s the one single area where it’s demonstrably worse (focus tracking).
“”that’s the one single area where it’s demonstrably worse (focus tracking).””
Not forgetting the serious lack of fast quality telephoto lenses, the problems with EVF for fast moving targets.
+1
Nex-6 with on sensor PDAF actually does a pretty decent job with tracking.
Still it’s a joke comparing to DSLR.
Sony DSLRs are still a joke compared to Nikon’s top cameras for reporters
I think this is the dumbest commercial I’ve ever heard of from a company. Comparing two of their own products saying one is better than the other… and even making it really stupid in a totally nonsense way. It’s not even funny. Only totally dumb.
It’s sad, and telling of Sony’s true lack of respecting the still photographer. I really feel sorry for Sony.
I think they are trying to say many people purchase pro gear without knowing how to use it and a NEX will deliver the same quality in a smaller and easier to use package.
I did not really find the commercials to be very good though. I see people with dslr cameras all the time taking pictures with a pop up flash and kit lens.
Zeiss would never mock their ZA/ZF/ZE lenses in order to promote the Touit lenses.
Sony would be served better by praising photographers, rather than mocking them.
They would never make their Pro Video Line users look like idiots in order to promote the VG line.
Indeed. To tell their customers that “if you cant shoot, use a nEx” doesnt sound too well… “if you dont know how to use our equipment perfectly, dont use it at all”… Sounds like quite a brain-relieved strategy
They are not mocking DSLRs. They are mocking uninformed users who purchased DSLRs without any comprehension of their own photographic needs.
Oh yeah, and those bullied are definitely going to buy a product from the bully…
I really have to question if you actually know what bullying means.
Knowing the technical capabilities of the camera, how would this silly advertisement diminish one’s desire to own an A99 in any way?
Do you shoot ‘P mode’, and fall-over a lot?
most dumb comercial i´ve ever seen for a camera gear. they are fooling every single a99 user with this. it will not get better for sony. such a shame. i´m very happy that i changed to nikon d600
I find it interesting how admin not only promotes this, but also salutes and welcomes it… In the post from Nov 12 2012 about these guys you had a way more neutral standpoint by posting this, but realizing that Sony is shooting themselves in the foot by doing this
It’s a nonsensical commercial. A NEX is not easier to shoot than a DSLR. It’s smaller – that’s the whole point – and for that advantage one has to pay with a few disadvantages (such as slower AF). But from the perspective of ease of use there is no difference.
The whole point of mirrorless cameras is short backfocus lenses, and compact size is merely is a byproduct. There were film SLR cameras in past as small as NEX.
After time, many pros will switch to mirrorless cameras because lenses for mirrorless cameras may be made sharper and the mirror doesn’t really help if you need accurate rather than fast focusing.
Klaus NEX has iAuto and superior iAuto modes ….how can you say it is not easier than shooting A99 that lacks auto modes
I always got the itch that this site is flooded by conservativism. What’s wrong with those commercials?
Don’t know where you all come from, but could it be that you all don’t understand the Australian-English Humor?
Or is it that most of you just like complaining and nagging ’cause Sony did not place any Commercials at all in you area?
I am certain I am one of the oldest posters here – but be assured – as old as you behave I never want to get.
Come on – relax and enjoy and have fun with your cams, instead! 😀
The question to put is: Are these videos/ads enhancing SONYs BRAND?
The answer is NO WAY! It’s just trying to be funny.
Funnyish commercials. The only issue I would have is that it shows scenario 1, with the A99 & blurry shots vs NEX & in focus shots.
Is this not self depreciating your own products!
Sony only made these to freak out you SAR readers. The adds will never be shown to the public – Sony doesn’t do TV advertising for its camera’s in Australia. You have to go to the Sony web site if you want to watch them and realistically who’s ever going to do that? I bet the folks that made them are reading this forum now and pissing themselves laughing at you guys.
I don’t find nex interesting sorry folks. As for Sony they are using their own cameras covering up the labels and then mocking them 😉
Odd a company down plays it’s own product. Reality is you can take bad photos on NEX and DSLR’s
Since when have commercials ever been truthful? I think they are quite funny, but not as funny as some of the comments here. Guys, just buy and use the stuff you like and ignore all the hype.
lol commercial failed…the guy was using an A99 with out of focus shots…$ony just shot it’s own foot…
Having an A99 doesn’t make all your picture in focus, every time. You just reaffirmed the “DSLRgear no idea” point.
Someone sure is having a hard time comprehending……..
How gullible does Sony think we are? ANY DSLR will be better for fast action (sports) than a CLC-I LOVE my x100s but wouldn’t dream of shooting the above with it-thats why I won’t ever let my DSLR go…
Nice try Sony-geez…
Strange commercial.
If your focus point is not on your subject you will get no picture with the subject in focus. It is that easy and does not care if you have a mirror in your camera.
Btw, sports photography is a bad example for a Nex advertisement, since continous AF is the most serious restriction these cameras have compared to DSLRs.
Given that Sony are not releasing any noticeable sale style cameras this year is it not the norm to focus on the mass market?
Personally I don’t think they are doing any harm, this sale user is very happy to wait until 2014 to see how things turn out on the development road map.
Si
Given they don’t make much sales with SLRs, just sticking new 36 Mpix sensor in A900 + few cosmetic changes would make a lot more sense than total redesign…
That would be too simple.
I quite like the ads for the people they’re aiming at, it’s the perfect message (DSLR quality but simple). The fact that the user in the ad finds the AF tracking on the NEX6 better than the A99 is total BS but that’s marketing
Sadly there are a few who believe everything they read on the internet, it is there gossip lol.
Si
This is clever and fun! Very good commercials.
The point is clear – if you are not pro just buy the camera that does best photos for facebook
They use camera phones.
Andrea please post the main site and the intro video

People evidently miss the point of these clips
What a dslr Shooter really wants IS a bazooka lens .. 😉
Thanks for the links. They are way better then the both in the news.
0:30 in the second vid – a wild a700 appeared!
These are obviously not targeted at their DSLR/DSLT userbase or market. They’re for people who really have no clue, and want better quality photos and have failed to use or understand the DSLRs. Its also humorous, so it takes the sting away.
Its brilliant marketing. Really, it is.
It also says that they are committed to the Alpha mount range (as well as the NEX), and that they’re indended for two very different user bases.
Excellent work Sony, keep up the commericals.
