I spotted an incredible fractal pattern while walking through a slot cave. In this situation, most cameras would require a bracketed photo. With the A7S I was able to capture this with a single underexposed photo and then bumped up the shadows in Lightroom later.

  1. Lots of beautiful photos! Question for Sergey Kuznetsov: did you have to take three different shots? One for the night sky, one at sunset, and one with the guy on the boat? I can’t imagine the guy on the boat wouldn’t be blurry if you used one long exposure, and that red glow looks like a sun glow rather than light pollution. In any case, I really like it.

In any case, all the pictures were very good, and I always have a weak spot for astrophotos, and these were all really well done.

      1. there are different types of photography and each of them has its right to exist. for one person taking a photo is all about documenting reality, another person wants to create pictures beyond reality. dismissing modern techniques or certain types of photography is like limiting yourself and being a blockhead. some people say its easier to be a decent photographer today because of the superior gear that is available but they forget one thing: its still very difficult to create something meaningfull and its hard work to stand out from the crowd.

        1. Totally agreed. Most things have been photographed. Taking “impossible pictures” is basically illustrating something coming out of your imagination, something that no one else really has access to. I love surrealistic images.

  2. These are some incredible pics. That picture is unreal Sergey. They’re all great but I also love Bernhard’s pic with the out of focus stars.

  3. Man, some awesome awesome work this week and gets better and better. Keith Au with the A77II and 500 reflex- score!

  4. I agree that the first photo, while absolutely stunning, would be virtually impossible to do in one shot. I have no problem with compositing, but I hope that the artist is open about it.

  5. Kind of agree with some comments here, of course “magic” pictures achieved by heavy, sometimes ridiculous level of manipulation are in all different category and always will draw more attention opposed to real true (honest) photography. They should be displayed in they own category. Question is which type of photographs is better testimony as to the abilities of the particular cameras/lenses.
